John gave a quickly look at the Chikorita and nodded to my question that he didn’t want the Chikorita. To be honest, there was a lot better Grass Pokemon one could find, it was pretty low on the list in my opinion. I could easily name a dozen other Grass types that were overall better than it, it just didn’t offer that much to a battle team. Which was probably the reason I had only seen around five trainers with the Pokemon, there were a few others but they never used theirs for battle.

The only reason I would have caught the Pokemon would have been purely for its addition to the Pokedex. My Sceptile, Ludicolo, and Whimiscott were all better Grass types that I used fairly often.

“I can see why,” was all I said. I bent down to look the Grass type in the eye and began to speak to it. “Hey there little guy, I see that you are friendly. Here’s the thing though, John is looking for some other Pokemon. So if he caught you then you wouldn’t see much battles or him very much. So, could you move along?”

The Chikorita beamed a smile at me and started to rub its head-leaf along my arm, clearly wanting to stick around. I sighed and looked up at Nitro. “This little one is sticking around I’m afraid. You’ll either have to battle it or get a Pokedoll as I don’t see another way of getting past it.”

Gaius walked over to the Chikorita, and asked it to leave, telling it I wasn't interested. I hoped it would leave with no problems, but to my displeasure Chikorita decided against it.

"This little one is sticking around, I’m afraid. You’ll either have to battle it or get a Pokedoll as I don’t see another way of getting past it," Gaius informed me.

I sighed, and rummaged through my wallet before pulling out another $500. Handing it to Gaius, I muttered, "Might as well get this one over with quickly so we can move on."

John gave a sigh of defeat and reached for his quickly dwindling wad of cash. “Might as well get this one over with quickly so we can move on,” he grumbled. When he located his wallet he passed over the five hundred and I gave him another Pokedoll to use. I passed him a Cleffa doll and he held it out to the Chikorita. Two vines sprang from the green dots circling Chikorita’s neck and reached out for the pink doll. It grabbed the doll with the vines and retreated into the undergrowth to play with its new toy.

“Sorry you haven’t had much luck,” I said to John. So far he hadn’t had much luck in finding any really good Pokemon, but I was confident we would come upon some good Pokemon soon. His wallet had took a hit, but hopefully the Pokemon he would catch would make up for it.

I walked forward down the path and the scene started to chance as it had before. I caught a glimpse of what the ruins really looked like, but that was only a brief view before we were thrust into a new area. This one had a bright blue sky and a soft breeze. I smelled salt on the wind and new what area we were at.

The sound of water lapping against the shore confirmed my suspicion. I followed the noise past the grove of trees we were in and spotted the great lake before us. Near the shore, in the water, I spotted a pink Pokemon floating lazily with the current. As I edged closer I saw that it was a Slowpoke. Slowpoke were really good Water Pokemon that evolve into either Slowking or Slowbro.

“You want to catch a Slowpoke?” I asked John, not sure if he had a Slowbro or Slowking.

Gaius handed me a Cleffa doll, and I set it down. Chikorita immediately ran over, her attention captured by the toy. We walked past it, leaving it behind us.

"Sorry you haven’t had much luck," Gaius remarked, but I was taking my lack of exciting encounters in stride. This Back to Basics event offered a lot more useless Pokemon than it did useful ones, and the ratio was showing so far. However, I figured I would find something fun eventually.

The area around us changed again. This time, we were on a sunny beach. The waves lapped on to the sand, which crunched beneath my feet. I spotted my next encounter immediately. The pink Pokemon was lazily resting on the edges of the shore.

    "Slowpoke," it yawned.

"You want to catch a Slowpoke?" Gaius asked me, and I nodded. I personally had no interest in Slowbros or Slowkings - while I was well aware of their competitive uses, I wasn't that proficient with them. Still, I knew they were valuable, and I would probably get some solid return value out of this. If nothing else, I couldn't ignore something with this much value.

"Yeah, I'll take it," I said, motioning for Cryogonal to step forward. He'd be a good choice here, because as a Steel-type, he resisted Slowpoke's Psychic-type attacks while also dealing super-effective damage with Bug-type moves. "Let's lead off with X-Scissor!"

Cryogonal nodded, and crossed his claws. He began running towards Slowpoke, ready to attack with a large swipe.

John nodded that he wanted to catch the Slowpoke, but he didn’t seem to enthusiastic about it very much. That could mean a couple of things which I could only speculate on, but at the very least I knew people often willing to trade for a Slowpoke, so he could at least trade it if he didn’t want it. “Yeah, I’ll take it.” He waved his Scizor forward and got his Pokemon ready for combat. “Let’s lead off with X-Scissors!”

This was a surprising move for Scizor to use. Slowpoke would not do very well against the Scizor for multiple reasons. Added to this was that Scizor had high attack and Slowpoke was a basic Pokemon. That coupled with Slowpoke’s weakness to Bug typed moves because it was Psychic meant that it couldn’t handle that many moves from a superior Pokemon like Scizor.

Scizor crossed his glowing claws and leapt forward to attack the Slowpoke in the water. Slowpoke not known for their speed, failed to dodge the attack or even make an attempt to dodge. Scizor smashed his claws into Slowpoke and leapt back to the safety of the shore. Slowpoke didn’t show any emotion from the attack and simply started to glow a silver instead of its normal pink.

I didn’t know what attack it was using, but the Pokemon was clearly raising its stats. Slowpoke had a lot of moves that could boost its stats. Amnesia, Iron Defense, Curse, and Belly Drum were the main ones often seen, but it did possess others. Only time would tell what move it had decided to use.

Cryogonal swiped at Slowpoke with a powerful X-Scissor, throwing his crossed claws across the Pokemon's flank. They left a noticeable bruise on Slowpoke. I smiled when I saw that my Pokemon had landed a very effective blow on to the target - this would offer me plenty of flexibility moving forward, already having done this much damage to the opponent.

Cryogonal returned to my side for new orders, although first I waited to see what Slowpoke's move would be before I made my next.

"Slowpoke...!" the Pokemon moaned in a lazy cry of pain, although X-Scissor had landed more than a few moments ago. That, then, was Slowpoke's famous (or infamous?) delayed reaction. The Pokemon was so lazy, she didn't even cry in pain immediately when she got hurt. Add that to the list of reasons I didn't really like this Pokemon.

Slowpoke's body began glowing with a silver aura - she was finally making her next move, then. I recognized this move as Curse. It was a move that would boost the user's Attack and Defense stats while dropping their Speed stat (unless the user was a Ghost-type, in which case it would do something completely different altogether).

Curse was probably the perfect move for a Pokemon like Slowpoke, although I doubted it would be much of a problem to me anyways. Cryogonal was powerful enough that nothing Slowpoke could do would stall me for too long. Still, I figured it was better safe than sorry, and I decided to land one more powerful attack so I wouldn't have to worry about being forced into a stall war later on.

"Alright, Cryogonal, let's dump in one more X-Scissor!" I called. Pumping in this much damage to Slowpoke early was a little bit of a risk, but I figured it should be fine. The first X-Scissor had fallen comfortably short of 50% the first time through, and since Slowpoke had raised her Defense with Curse, tossing in this next X-Scissor shouldn't be a problem. I had a rough idea of how I wanted to wrap up the rest of this battle anyways.

Cryogonal crossed his claws once more, ready to attack again. He looked at me and I nodded at him - go.

John seemed happy with how the battle was progressing and launched into his next attack immediately. “Alright, Cryogonal, let’s dump in one more X-Scissor!”

This surprised me because he was using another hard hitting move, but that was a little mitigated by the Slowpoke using Curse, easy to spot now that I noticed it was moving just a tad slower than before. Because of the Curse the Slowpoke should still have a fairly good amount of health left after another X-Scissor.

Scizor flapped his small wings hard and zoomed towards the female Water Pokemon, his large claws crossed. The Slowpoke watched the Scizor come flying towards it and simply wrapped her tail around her body as extra protection. I thought she was using another stat raising move like Curse again, but just before the Scizor reached out to strike her, her tail suddenly lashed out with a large trail of water in its wake.

The attack connected with the face of Scizor, but the Steel Pokemon weathered the blow and delivered his attack before rebounding to the safety of his trainer. The Aqua Tail attack hadn’t done too much damage, but it had lowered Scizor’s health by a fifth if my guess was right.

The Slowpoke for her part didn’t lose as much health because of the attack-defense combo, but she was losing a lot of health in this battle. I figured she might be able to take another attack, no more than two though. John would probably have to use one more attack if he wanted to catch the Slowpoke, but battles were fluid engagement and nothing was set in stone.

    @AmericanTreeFrog

Slowpoke, seeing Cryogonal attacking with X-Scissor again, read the move and made to counter it. She wrapped her tail around herself, seemingly protectively. This didn't look like any defensive move I had ever seen before, however. What was it?

Suddenly (or at a middling speed, which was still impressive for Slowpoke), Slowpoke lashed out with her tail. A trail of water flew off her tail as it whipped around towards Cryogonal. I could see the liquid forming on the tail as well. This was Aqua Tail, a pretty powerful Physical Water-type move. Thankfully, Slowpoke wasn't too proficient with Physical moves.

The attack whipped into Cryogonal's face, and my Pokemon winced, but he fought through and struck home with the X-Scissor. His crossed claws struck the same flank as earlier, and even with the Curse boost, it was clear that Slowpoke was taking a lot of damage. From the looks of things, her health was somewhere around where I had expected and hoped it to be. It looked like my prediction had been on point, which was good. Now, time was on my side.

I waited to see if Slowpoke would attack again, in which case I would have to retaliate. However, with Curse having lowered Slowpoke's already infamous Speed, I wasn't surprised when the Pokemon did not attack. This was my turn.

"Alright, Cryogonal, use..." I trailed off, catching myself mid-command. I was now having a change of mind of what I wanted to do. A moment ago, I had wanted to go with Toxic to land a status on to Slowpoke, making her easier to catch. I was now having second thoughts, however. Landing that particular status on to Slowpoke may just be asking for further complications. Slowpoke was already at a low health, and if I failed to capture it before the Toxic finished it off, then that would be a very big problem. There were other, easier ways to manage what I wanted to do.

"Cryogonal, let's go in a different direction actually. Start with Light Screen, and then go with a U-Turn to Cloyster!" I commanded. Cloyster, my Dragonite, had yet to see the light of day in this Park run, and I figured she would be very pleased at the opportunity to make her entrance into things. She had a few moves with which I could use to my advantage.

My Cryogonal began setting up a Light Screen. This move was a precautionary move - Water-types like Slowpoke were typically excellent users of Ice-type moves as well, and even though Cloyster had pretty good bulk and the Multiscale trait, Ice-type moves were never fun for her. Light Screen, which defended my Pokemon against Special moves, was a very good move to use here since all the Ice-type moves Slowpoke could learn (and most of them in general) were Special moves. Cloyster should be well protected from those for the rest of this battle, if I handled things efficiently.

U-Turn was a move I could use to get Cloyster in while dealing basically the rest of the damage I intended to do to Slowpoke in this battle, which killed two birds in one stone. X-Scissor had done roughly 25% of damage to Slowpoke, and since U-Turn was a little weaker than X-Scissor and Slowpoke still had around a third of her health left, no problems should crop up from putting in this one more hit. At best U-Turn may leave Slowpoke with somewhere around 10% of her health, though I was hoping that number would dip down into single-digits. Of course, given the flexibility of this situation right now, it wouldn't be a problem if that didn't happen, either. I had backup plans.

John was about to launch his next round of attacks when he suddenly stopped himself midsentence as a thoughtful look crossed his face. He took about thirty seconds to think his next move before deciding on a plan.

“Cryogonal, let’s go in a different direction actually. Start with Light Screen, and then go with a U-Turn to Cloyster!”

Switching out his Scizor for his Dragonite was an interesting plan. I didn’t know what he was planning to do with his Dragonite, but by calling it out he was taking a risk because Slowpoke being a Water type knew the powerful Ice move known as Ice Beam. Dragonite had a four times weakness to Ice attacks, which might explain the Light Screen move.

Scizor pointed his claws out and began to focus his energy to create the special energy shield that would limit damage. The Slowpoke tilted its head in response and a confounded look crossed its features. Slowpoke were really slow Pokemon, physically and mentally. Slowpoke’s body shimmered for a brief instant before it faded back to its normal color, meaning that Slowpoke had used another stat raising move.

Next, a ball of water began to form in its mouth. But before Slowpoke could completely form the attack the Scizor was upon in a flash, striking the Slowpoke again before buzzing back to the side of Eric as the Dragonite took to the field in place of Scizor. Dragonite flew forward, right into a jet of water. Dragonite barely seemed to feel the attack, due to the combination of Light Screen and Multiscale.

Slowpoke remained still and watched her new opponent with caution. The U-Turn had done a fair amount of damage, but she still had enough health left to put up a fight. Plus, she had the ability to heal with Slack Off if she needed to.

Cryogonal stuck out his claws, and a wall of shimmering energy appeared around him in the form of a protective bubble. It was a translucent yellow, and I knew that this Light Screen would be very effective in reducing the effect of Slowpoke's many Special moves.

Meanwhile, Slowpoke had a dumbfounded look on her face. This wasn't all that out of the ordinary, to be completely honest, but the very faint glow around her that was visible for the briefest of moments certainly was. That indicated that Slowpoke had probably used some kind of stat boosting move. Judging from what she had just done, I'd be willing to bet it was Amnesia, a move that boosted the user's Special Defense stat by two stages.

That was not a problem to me, however, thanks to the beautiful situation I had put myself in. Slowpoke was already as weakened as I needed it to be, so dealing any more damage was completely unnecessary, rendering those Special Defense buffs useless. They may even come in handy if I later decided to throw in one more weak attack on Slowpoke to really put it in the sweet spot for a capture, although I didn't know if I really felt like doing that.

Next, Slowpoke began forming a bubble of water in her mouth. This was Water Pulse. At best, it was an average Water-type move, although it did have a small chance of confusing the target. That would certainly be annoying, but the 10% chance of it happening was low enough that I didn't really have any real reason to be worried at the moment.

Cryogonal used this moment to strike, however. He jumped out towards Slowpoke and struck her with his claws, dealing a quick blow before jumping back. Slowpoke cringed, but maintained his focus and continued forming the Water Pulse. Meanwhile, Cryogonal turned into a red beam of light, and flew back into my Pokeball. That was a side effect of U-Turn - the user would automatically return to its Pokeball.

"Good job, Cryogonal," I muttered as I pulled out my other Pokeball. "Now it's your turn, Cloyster!"

My Dragonite exploded out of her Pokeball in a magnificent burst of white light. She roared loudly, and set her eyes upon her opponent - the Slowpoke, now with very, very little health remaining. She snorted a little, as if dismissing this Pokemon as any kind of threat.

Then, Slowpoke launched the Water Pulse at her. It was first dulled by the Light Screen, then by Cloyster's Multiscale ability. However, it still smacked her into the chest, which was plenty enough to get the fierce Pokemon in a frenzy.

"Dragonite!" she roared loudly. Dragon-types were usually very feisty Pokemon, I remarked to myself. "Don't mind that, Cloyster! We're just going to wrap things up now! Use Thunder Wave!"

Cloyster bit on her lip, then blue electricity began charging on her antenna. She seemed to be restraining herself, for me at least. She knew I wouldn't be happy if she Knocked Out this Pokemon on accident.

Meanwhile, I was thinking. After this Thunder Wave, I could probably go for the capture. I had considered dumping in another attack for good measure, but that was probably unnecessary. Yeah, I decided, I'll go for the capture. I unhooked an empty Park Ball from my belt, although I didn't click the center button quite yet.

@Nitro - Wasn’t quite sure if you wanted the capture yet, but I decided to err with caution.

Despite the very low amount of damage that Slowpoke’s Water Pulse did, Dragonite was not at all pleased by the attack. As if to illustrate her point, she roared loudly. John didn’t seem very perturbed by it as he called out his next attack. “Don’t mind that, Cloyster! We’re just going to wrap things up now! Use Thunder Wave!”

A common combo of trainers was to inflict a status condition on Pokemon they were trying to catch because it increased the capture rate of that Pokemon. Because John had been around I wasn’t at all surprised to see the Thunder Wave move, I had been expecting it when he switched his Scizor out.

As Dragonite started to charge the electricity gathering around her antenna, the Slowpoke’s eyes started to glow pink. Those eyes usually meant one thing, a Psychic attack was being used. Since Slowpoke was part Psychic, this wasn’t that surprising. That pink glow surrounded Dragonite and moment and slammed the much larger Pokemon into the ground.

Dragonite winced, but held her focus on the Thunder Wave. When it had built up enough the Dragonite aimed the charge at Slowpoke and fired. A shockwave of blue energy rippled from the great Dragon and spread towards Slowpoke. Soon as the blue electricity connected with Slowpoke, the Pokemon dropped its Psychic hold on Dragonite as the electricity wracked its body.

A Pokeball came sailing from John’s direction to strike Slowpoke. The Slowpoke was sucked inside with a flash of light. The Pokeball started to wiggle as the Pokemon struggled to escape, but it was too no avail, Slowpoke was captured. I walked over and grabbed the ball. I hooked it to my belt and turned to John.

“That’s one capture. You want to move on?”

OOC: LOL didn't want the capture yet, but hey, I'll take it. Sorry for the half-assed post btw, it's kind of getting late but I wanted to just get this one over with.

Dragonite's Thunder Wave crashed into Slowpoke, and now I tossed the Park Ball at the paralyzed Pokemon. The Pokemon was sucked into the Park Ball, and the ball began rolling around on the ground. It wiggled a little, but stopped quickly. I wasn't surprised - I felt like I had really dealt a number to that Pokemon.

"That’s one capture. You want to move on?" Gaius asked me.

I nodded. "Let's keep going." I wondered if I would see anything else of note in this run. Hopefully I would, but my odds weren't particularly great. I shrugged. Whatever, I would get to take home four Pokemon, and it had only cost me $2000 to get in this event run in a brand new area. I had no real reason to be complaining.

“Let’s keep going,” was all John said in response to my question. I shrugged and wait for the Enigma Ruins to change once more. Which they promptly did a moment later.

Instead of the lake area we were just in, this area was a vast forest, easily marking it as the Woods, a place we had already been before. So far in this area we hadn’t found much that was of interest to John, so I was doubting we would find something interesting now, but it could never hurt to remain hopeful.

I walked forward and began to search for our next encounter, careful to keep a good watch. This was an area with many powerful Pokemon, even though we could only find lower Pokemon, some of those Pokemon could pack a punch if they got the drop on us.

After a few minutes I finally spotted an encounter. It was a green Pokemon about a foot long and it was segmented with a lot of legs. It’s bulbous black eyes and facial markings gave it away as one of the most common Pokemon ever to be seen. It was a Caterpie. I grimaced and looked over at John. The Caterpie was spinning a net for itself in a tree, and it hadn’t spotted us yet. So if John didn’t want the Pokemon, which I thought to be highly likely, then he should let me know right away so we could get away from the Pokemon.

We continued trudging along, and the Great Lakes morphed into a forested area. The trees stood tall and there was little space between them - this was the Forest. My odds of finding something worthwhile here were stacked against me, although I held out hope that whatever the Enigma Ruins brought to me would be cool.

Nope. Gaius pointed out an ordinary-looking Caterpie. We hadn't seemed to attract its attention yet, meaning we may be able to get past it without any unnecessary hassle.

I shook my head at Gaius silently. He had probably already expected this answer, so we should be able to move on quickly without alerting the Caterpie.

John shook his head at me silently, telling me all I needed to know about the Caterpie. People very rarely caught this Pokemon, which due to the Pokemon being weak wasn’t at all surprising in the slightest. Caterpie was in a list of Pokemon that if I saw them get captured I would be surprised.

Since I was ready for his response I quickly moved us out of the area. After we had walked about twenty feet the the ruins’ decided a change was in the works once more. The new area was one we had just been in no more than ten minutes previously, the Great Lakes.

“Hope you want another Water Pokemon,” I commented.

Instead of being by a lake, this time we were next to a small creek. The water was just deep enough that it would go up past our ankles, and wide enough that we would have to wade across it. Swimming in a calm part of the water was a fish Pokemon, a Remoraid to be exact.

“What about those? I hear they can be good if trained correctly.”

We quietly crept past the Caterpie, and thankfully, we didn't attract its attention. This saved me a little bit of money, though in all honesty I probably would have just battled the thing.

We kept moving, and this time, the landscape transformed back into my battle site from earlier: the Great Lakes. Unlike the Forest, the Lakes held a lot of potential. Last time I saw a Slowpoke - I hoped for something better this time.

"Hope you want another Water Pokemon," Gaius commented, and I certainly did. There were a couple of Water-types I wouldn't say no to.

I spotted my next encounter swimming around my ankles. I pulled back my foot in surprise, then frowned at the small silver fish I was looking at. A Remoraid like this wasn't what I had been looking for. Octillery looked pretty neat, but to me, they weren't worth much.

"What about those? I hear they can be good if trained correctly," Gaius asked.

"Nah, let's keep going," I said.

John took a look at the fish Pokemon and decided it wouldn’t be worth it. He said, “Nah, ;et’s keep going.”

I turned away from the river and started to led us away from it when a jet of water shot from the river to hit me in the back of the head. I yelped in surprised and turned to see that the Remoraid was now facing us, a stern expression on its features.

I wiped the water away from hair and turned to John. “Do you want to buy a Pokedoll and give it to this little heathen, or do you want to battle it?”

John of course already knew this, but it was my job to state such things and make sure everything went along without breaking the rules. It could be a tad boring for me at times, but at least I got paid well and watching some of the battles was fun.

    @AmericanTreeFrog

Sorry ATF, I forgot to tell you that I was going to leave for a little bit to focus on exams and stuff... I'm back now, but uh, I don't really feel like continuing on this. So, I'm going to wrap up my run here. Thanks, and sorry again for forgetting to tell you about the leaving thing
