Ivy watched as the Horsea endured their attack unflinchingly. The seahorse didn't look too phazed, but then again, she hadn't expected it. They were still testing the waters, and she liked to know where they stood before she went full out.

The Water-type retaliated with a water pulse, sending fast-flowing rings of water rushing at the purple cat. The Ranger could feel Haji brace himself as the water rushed over him. Being stomach-high in water, there wasn't a chance that he would be able to dodge many, if any, of these attacks. That was going to be troublesome if they didn't start dishing out damage soon. He could only take so much. If he was too injured, however, she wasn't going to hesitate to send Brin out, even if he was slow.

The Horsea didn't seem too worried, but Ivy couldn't tell if it was confidence or just the strength of Haji's last attack. Either way it seemed that the Water-type was a hardy battler, and that was what they needed for traversing through the Park.

“You want to play with rings, huh?” she asked, scanning the environment again. “We can do that. But first,” she said, getting Haji's attention. “Let's limit her movement a little. Set up a ring of Light Screens. We'll make a cage of sorts like I heard one of Chainy's Trainers did at the Lakes.”

Ivy visualized what she wanted in her mind as she saw Haji nod. His energy spiked and then smoothed as he focused, seeing a loose ring of five almost-invisible panels halfway in the water and halfway out. They were angled back a little too, so they were partly looking up at the sky. It wasn't going to be a solid ring, but that was okay. This would hopefully be distracting if nothing else.

She looked up at the ceiling of their transformed room and saw the enhanced brightness. They were going to change that too. “Okay, Haji, once you've got that up, let's call on a Sunny Day to brighten this place up even more.”

She was hoping that the glare from the sun would radiate across all the panes, making a field of light. It wasn't impossible for the Horsea to swim out of it – in fact, that was pretty probable – but it would make Haji harder to see. She wasn't sure if that was going to give them an advantage or not, but it was something to try, at least. Haji wouldn't need to see to know where the Horsea was.

“Better put on your sunglasses, Gary,” she said, turning toward him with a grin. Then she looked back at her purple cat. “After that, use your senses to locate the seahorse, and then send your own rings back at her in a Psybeam. Close your eyes if you need to. You can start increasing the strength now.”

The Espeon 'saw' more with his psychic energy than with his eyes. She had actually shared his ability a couple of times to see the energy waves in everything. It had been a fascinating and frightening experience all in one. Thankfully for Haji, that second sight was like a background enhancer so it didn't affect his normal seeing ability. It did come in handy at times like this, though, since he could close his eyes and still be able to mostly see, as long as he could read the energy patterns. Since everything gave off an energy signature, it was second nature to him.

Ivy was hoping the rings of the Psybeam would travel easier through the water, just like the Water Pulse had. They weren't made of liquid, instead it was formed of tightly bound energy that swirled in circular bursts. Light bounced off this spinning energy to make it look like it was colored in shades of pink, purple, and a pale yellow-green. Since the energy moved, she was hoping that would help it flow through the room.

Haji got his attack ready, and all she could do was wait to see what happened.

"Colossus, why are we always getting the runs that people abandon?" I asked my partner Pokemon. The small blue robot just shrugged.

"To pick up their slack?" Colossus, the Golett said. "If not then this place would be behind on stuff." I just sighed and shook my head. "They need to start recruiting more members, either that or pay us more!" I said grinning. "We're headed off to that new area in the park. I still haven't even been there. Neither have any of my other brothers. We've been spending all of our time at the lakes trying to get Phione. Now that we have it though, we're just going to finish off our dex. We're not even that far off!"

"Over there." Colossus said, pointing towards a scrawny, long bearded, gray haired, mean looking, old Ranger, he sort of smelled too. That was Ranger Gary, he was retiring and we had to come relieve him.

“Better put on your sunglasses, Gary,” Ivy, another fellow Ranger said to Gary.

"Hey Gary, you can go now." I said to him as I approached, doing so as quietly as possible because I didn't want to distract Ivy while she was battling. I heard she had quite the temper and I wasn't going to find out if that was true or not. Gary nodded dumbly and skipped off. Ivy was battling with her Espeon, Hag or Haj or something like that, I couldn't remember its name. I did however, notice that the Espeon had Light Screen activated and that the place was surprisingly hot. I assumed it used Sunny Day. I had got there just in time to see the Espeon use Psybeam. The attack hit Horsea. Being in the sun and all of its water attacks being halved left Horsea at a severe disadvantage. It didn't look good for the little dude.

Horsea did the only thing it could do, hide. It spat out a thick layer of smoke that surrounded the entire area. That only took seconds. Then a colorful beam shot through the smoke and hit Espeon square in the face. It wasn't going to do that much damage because of Light Screen and other reasons, but it was still going to do something, and that was what Horsea needed.

Ivy distantly heard and felt the water splashing against her legs as Haji cut off the energy to his Psybeam. Thankfully, it had managed to hit the Horsea despite the room looking like an oversized tanning booth. The Light Screens and Sunny Day combination had done just what she had wanted to, although she didn't really expect the heat to be magnified as much as it was.

The Ranger pulled a little at her dark turtleneck, letting her skin breathe a little. At least this way Horsea's Water-typed attacks weren't going to do as much damage to her Pokemon. The wild one seemed to realize this too, because as soon as she recovered from the psychic blast, the seahore sounded the retreat call.

The small dragon took a large breath and then spewed out a thick layer of murky smoke into the air. It hovered above the water, inking out the bright glare from the Light Screens like patchy clouds. Spots of light still shone through, but the haze had covered the main battle area, making it almost impossible to see under the water. She was glad they were in a room so the Pokemon couldn't run away for real.

Ivy almost thought they were going to have to play hide and seek when a bright lime green beam came out from the darkness, striking the Espeon on his head. A burst of light sparked off of him as the blast hit the red gem on his forehead, and the purple cat stumbled back as the Signal Beam suddenly ended. The water sloshed as he fought to keep his feet.

“You okay, Haji?” she asked even as she scanned the darkness for their foe. If the Espeon could lock on to a general area where the attack energy came from, they might be able to pinpoint where the Horsea generally was – provided that she wasn't swimming around in circles or something.

“I am alright.” he finally replied once he regained focus. Ivy could almost hear his thoughts realign, like a piercing ear buzz fading away.

More movement in the water made her turn her head. She saw another Ranger with them now, and after waving goodbye to Gary, she greeted his replacement. “Hey, Rex,” she said while smiling. “It's been a while.”

Even though she knew they had just started the run, it seemed that they had been here for a long time already. She knew better than to rush a battle, but... she also didn't want to spend forever in this facility. There were other Trainers to take, and as always, paperwork to complete.

“How worn out do you think the Horsea is, Haji?” she asked him.

He contemplated for a moment and then answered her, perhaps scanning the area with his heightened senses first. “I am unsure. She is not weak, but she is not as energetic as before. Would you like to end this quickly?”

“Was thinking of that, yeah. I'm a little worried about the smoke, though. I can't see at all.” It might be possible to link with Haji, she thought. That way, she might be able to get a read on the energy patterns to know exactly what way to throw a Pokeball. Her version wasn't as good as the Espeon's, but it was better than nothing. She would just ask Haji to guide the ball, but with what she was going to ask him do, she wasn't sure if juggling so many things would be good.

She nodded to herself once, deciding not to over-analyze the situation and just be a little risky. If the plan didn't work, it didn't work. They didn't have much to lose.

Ivy dug out a plain Parkball from her vest, making sure to zip the pocket back up so she didn't drop any of her other equipment. She hit the button to enlarge it, but she wasn't going to throw it just yet.

“Okay, Haji, this is what we're gonna try to do.” She tried to visualize in her mind what she wanted, so the Espeon would get a clearer picture. She wasn't exactly sure if this was going to work. “Reach out with your energy, and when you find the Horsea, I want you to trap her with a Grass Knot.”

The room had transformed into a mini-lake, but she wasn't sure this encluded the vegetation at the bottom of it. If it did, that was great, because it would give Haji some weed material to work with. If not, he was going to have to call up the roots the old fashioned way and have them dig up from the ground underneath the tile. That took a lot of energy, so hopefully his sharpened senses would be up to the task. In theory, she wanted the grasses to wrap around the seahorse and hold her a little above the water. Once she was immobile, it would be easier to try and capture her.

“Once you have a solid grip on her, I want you to hit her with a full-powered Psychic, unless you think that will knock her out. I'll let you use your judgment on that. We don't want to take her out, just weaken her enough not to fight capture. Then, with any luck and your help, I'll throw the ball. If you focus your energy in the Horsea's direction, I think I should be able to pick up on it.”

So long as they didn't knock the wild Pokemon out, they could always try to capture again if this time didn't work. Ivy gripped the ball more solidly in her right hand as she used her left to find a place on Haji's back. Her skin shivered with goosebumps as soon as her fingers came into contact with his fur, the energy jumping from between them. With the aid, she was hoping she'd be able to get the Parkball in the right general direction. If not, maybe Haji could spare a few seconds to guide it the rest of the way.

Here was to hoping her aim wasn't awful.

    Ranger: Trainer Sara
    BP #1

“Ms. Sara, there’s a bit of an issue,” came the voice of the secretary for the Docks Ranger Station. I was lying on a couch in the lounge area, watching some new soap opera called How the PokeBall Turns and laughing at how ridiculously shallow and dull the characters were. I sat up and faced the doorway as the young woman approached, looking at a few papers she was holding. When she reached me she handed me what she was looking at, and I wasn’t surprised to see it was a Trainer application.

“Mr. Rex had taken this run over from Mr. Gary, for Ms. Ivy Frost at the Enigma Ruins, but now Mr. Rex has to go as well.” The woman looked exasperated by it all, but didn’t allow herself to voice her irritation. “Would you be able to take the run over?”

“Do I look busy?” I said with a smile, waving aimlessly at the TV. The secretary didn’t respond and I sighed; this woman was way too uptight and stern. “Of course I can take it, I’m not doing anything productive at the moment. I’ll bum a ride on Seagem.” I stood from the couch and quickly went over the rest of the information on the papers. The Trainer’s name was indeed Ivy Frost, one of our Elite Rangers, and she had an Espeon, a Chandelure, and a Conkeldurr with her for this visit. After taking a minute to go over all the other information, I then tossed the papers onto the couch and headed out of the Outpost, whistling loudly once I was outside.

After a few moments a large, creamy-orange shape came flying out of the water next to the dock, landing and shaking itself off a moment later. I went over to my Dragonite and slapped her side fondly, clambering on her back and settling myself as I said, “We’re taking over a run at the Ruins.” Seagem responded with a faint hum as she couched, then leapt into the air with a powerful heave. Her wings snapped open and pushed downward, and a few moments later we were on our way.

It didn’t take long for Seagem’s powerful wings to carry us to the Ruins. From there I let out Bloodstone, my Sableye. From the updated information on the Trainer application, Ivy was currently using her Espeon to battle a Horsea. Bloodstone would be able to track the Psychic Pokemon’s mental energy so finding the Trainer would be an easier task than just wandering around for her. It didn’t take long for Bloodstone to pinpoint our destination, which thankfully wasn’t too far away.

I arrived in time to see a number of things happen. Espeon, which was named Haji if memory served correctly, was focusing on the water with an intent look in his eyes. I wondered if maybe the heat in the room was getting to him, since it was oddly hot, but something roiled up out of the water and above what appeared to be a Smokescreen a moment later. It looked like a tangle of aquatic plant life, and snagged in the middle of it was a Horsea. The seahorse let out a squeal as it was lifted out of the water, flailing in a mad effort to escape the floral prison holding it hostage.

Haji’s forehead gem then started to glow with a soft lavender light, which quickly grew in strength to a pulsing wave of mental power. When it reached its brightest point, a beam of brilliant purple energy tore from the gem. It spiraled through the air towards Horsea, but the little Water-Type seemed to regain its composure at the last moment. It shifted its weight and aimed its snout at Haji, firing off an Ice Beam. This struck Haji’s Psychic in the center and neatly split the single beam into two smaller ones. The force of the collision caused one of the beams to crash into the water several feet from Horsea, but the other beam washed over the entrapped Pokemon. The Ice Beam, for what it was worth, was slowed a bit from splitting Haji’s Psychic, which gave the Psychic feline a few precious seconds to slosh through the belly-deep water and dodge most of the blow. The stream of ice clipped his left shoulder, though, leaving a shiny patch of rime in its wake.

At that point I saw Ivy hurl a regular ParkBall at Horsea; it hit the plants entangling the Water Pokemon instead of Horsea itself, but the proximity of a Wild Pokemon caused it to pop open and suck the little creature inside anyways. The ParkBall then fell into the water, floating on the surface as it rocked back and forth. As this was taking place I hurried over and quietly dismissed Rex, offering a smile and a thumbs-up to show I understood that he had to go. As he left, I turned my attention back to the still-shaking ParkBall. After a moment it fell still; apparently Horsea was too exhausted to continue trying to break free.

I sloshed my way out to where the ParkBall was floating in the water, picking it up and stashing it safely in my hip-pack. Bloodstone chortled merrily from atop my head as I made my way back to Ivy, grinning despite my lower legs (including my shoes) being absolutely soaked.

“Heya! I don’t think I need to state that you’ve managed to catch that little critter. By the way, I’m taking over for Rex. Apparently some stuff came up and he was needed.”

@Dog of Hellsing; So which one of those is your Ranger's first name exactly? XD

    TP#5

Ivy breathed a sigh of relief as the Park Ball clicked shut for good. A sloshing in the water got her attention, and she turned her head just as she saw a familiar Ranger go over and pocket the Horsea she had just caught for safe keeping.

“Heya!” she said. “I don't think I need to state that you've managed to catcht hat little critter. By the way, I'm taking over for Rex. Apparently some stuff came up and he was needed.”

Ivy nodded and smiled at the familiar face. “Long time no see. I hope you've been well.” While they worked in the same department, being busy and working different shifts meant they didn't cross paths often.

She then double checked Haji to make sure he was alright. He told her he was, but he also wouldn't say if he was hurt anyway. Ivy didn't think that last Ice Beam hit looked too bad, since it had only grazed him. She brushed her hand over his shoulder to remove the remaining ice crystals from his purple coat. The rest would eventually melt off as they continued on. If it was still bothering him later, she'd use a potion on him.

“I think we're all set once this environment reverts,” she told the Ranger. “Sometimes these battles seem like they take forever, you know?”

OOC: Her first name is Trainer lol. Her parents were under the impression that one’s name determines one’s future. They might have taken the belief a bit too literally :p.

I nodded at Ivy’s comment about battles sometimes seeming to take forever, then motioned at the general area and chuckled a little.

“Sometimes the ruins revert to normal right after battle, but it seems to be my luck that they stay the way they are until a new Pokemon is brought in. Let’s head on and see if that turns out to be the case this time. Who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and things will change sooner this time.”

It took only a minute or so for the Ruins to change back to normal, a thing that had never occurred for me before. Any other time I’d come here, the Ruins had kept the data of the last Pokemon brought in and only changed as a new Pokemon was being teleported. It was a nice change for things to go back to normal for once, but I wouldn’t have complained either way. It was fascinating, really, how this area worked. Even though the Ruins had been up and running for months, it never ceased to amaze me how the laboratory could physically change to match an incoming Pokemon’s habitat perfectly.

“So, since you’re here I doubt there’s anything in particular you’re after, or else you would have probably gone to the specific area. Seeing what Fate decides to throw at you, I gather? It’s really quite exciting, having absolutely no idea what you might find.” I had only finished speaking when there came a sort of faint grinding noise, and moments later the cavern-like area we’d been walking through shimmered. It was then replaced by an exact replica of Mount Deckbi. The mountain was in the distance, though; we were standing near a copse of twisted, leafless trees maybe half a mile from the volcano itself. Hopping around near the base of one of these trees was a small purple bat-like Pokemon with a jointed scorpion’s tail. It currently had its back to us, pausing every few moments to poke at the ground with one of its large pinchers. It was about five yards away from us and seemed completely oblivious to our presence, which wasn’t a surprise. The Ruins replicated a Pokemon’s general vicinity to precisely that all but the most astute of Pokemon never noticed they’d been teleported in the first place.

“Well hey, a perfect example of what I was talking about,” I said as Bloodstone shifted excitedly on my head. “Are you in the market for a Gligar?”

@Dog of Hellsing; Okay, that's what I thought but I didn't want to call her that and look dumb XD Female please.

    TP#6

Saundra mentioned that sometimes the Ruins didn't change environment until a new Pokemon showed up, and Ivy nodded. She hadn't run into that yet, thankfully, since some of the rooms she visited would've been a pain to get through if they had remained how they were in battle. The main hallway was a good example. When she had taken a Trainer named Saundra through, it had flooded up to knee high while she battled a Tynamo. Since that hallway was pretty long, it would've been a pain to trudge through the water at only a quarter of normal speed.

Thankfully, this one changed back too. The day was looking up. She didn't have to trudge through the water – not that she minded the elements. She wouldn't be a Ranger if she did, since it was an almost daily basis that she went out into the wilderness. If it wasn't to guide Trainers through the Park, it was to go fix something on downtime. She had done a lot of that lately.

“So,” Trainer began. “Since you're here I doubt there's anything in particular you're after, or else you would have probably gone to the specific area. Seeing what Fate decides to throw at you, I gather? It's really quite exciting, having absolutely no idea what you might find.”

“That's pretty much the gist of it,” Ivy replied. “I'll admit that I had half a mind to find a good Water-type to make travel in the Lakes easier, but it seems I've found that one already. I really get sick of using those boats since I'm one of the people they send out to repaint them almost every week.” Last time she had a splinter in a finger that she couldn't get out for three days. “I like checking the trading boards too, for people that are too busy to come to the Park. I have a few contacts on the mainland that keep calling.”

Before they could engage in any more conversation, there was a grinding noise that reverberated through the walls and shook the floor underneath her feet. The air shimmered, almost like when Haji and she teleported from place to place around the Park. When she could see again, she saw Deckbi.

The heat came with it too, since these habitat generators were pretty accurate. Ivy pulled at the collar of her black turtleneck out of habit. At least this way all of their clothes should dry off at a decent rate.

The mountain itself looked like it was off in the distance, and again Ivy was amazed at the detail in some of these replications. It looked real. She could smell the dirt and scuff the ground like on the drylands. They were near some of those weird trees that grew on the mountain, the kind that were gnarly and didn't need a lot of water to survive.

What was interesting about them was the small, purple bat-like Pokemon hopping around near the base of the tree cluster. It had two large pincers where a blue-ish film formed wings beneath those limbs. A scorpion-like tail was swinging as it dug into the ground, maybe looking for food.

“Well, hey, a perfect example of what I was talking about,” Trainer said. “Are you in the market for a Gligar?”

“Well, I wouldn't say me in particular, but I know of a few people that might be interested. And who knows, she might get along with us after all. Not that I really need more people in my apartment,” she added almost to herself. It was getting a little crowded, but it wasn't uncomfortable yet.

The only problem was that she wasn't sure who to send out to fight. Gligar was Flying and Ground-type, two things that both Brin and Candle were weak to. Haji had just battled too, so she didn't want to send him out again, even if he told her he was fine. It just wasn't fair. There was the fact that Gligar were known for being pretty defensive too, so Brin's physical battle style wouldn't really mesh well.

The purple bat's back was to them, though, and that gave her an idea. If she didn't notice they were there right away, they could capitalize on it. She nodded to herself as she pulled out a Pokeball from inside her vest pocket.

“Okay, Candle, let's see what you got.”

The ball popped open on the dusty ground, and the chandelier-shaped Pokemon appeared with a happy cry, her flaming arms swinging around happily. She was pretty cheery most of the time, especially when it annoyed her Gallade, Vergil, but what Ivy was really banking on here was her bravery. The Fire-type looked attentive as she turned to face Ivy, still grinning. It look a lot to get her down.

“You'll be going up against a type disadvantage here, but I think we can overcome some of that if you try to float as much as possible. If you can stay off of the ground, she might not be able to hit you as hard. Think you can do that?”

Candle nodded vigorously and gave a short battle cry. Ivy hoped it didn't attract the attention of the Gligar too much. “Okay, I'll make this quick. Since the Gligar didn't react to us, I'm hoping she won't notice us right away. Remember how you used to play tricks on the drunks with Haxbat?” She nodded again. “Let's do that here too. Get close to the Gligar, and then let off an Astonish.”

If possible, Candle grinned even wider and bounced up and down a little bit. With Astonish, the Chandelure would project an apparition of herself much larger than she was. Usually this was also with a silly face, but Ivy knew that Candle would be more serious with this one. A Gligar was not a drunk and easily confused, after all.

“Wait a second,” she added when Candle was going to bound off. “Let's try to startle her, okay? Then, I want you to use a Will-o-Wisp. If we can inflict status early, we might save you some strength. Got it?” Her Pokemon nodded. “Okay, go for it.”

A Pokemon had a hard time batting with a burn, which is what she was hoping for. If the Gligar was hesitant to attack, they could possibly end this battle sooner with minimal damage to her Pokemon. Candle was a trooper and could take a couple hits, but she had no clue what else they would run into here in the ruins. It was best to be prepared.

Ivy saw the flames on Candle's hands change from their regular purple to a hazy red-silver color: a preparation for Will-o-Wisp. Sometimes the wisps did a wavy line dance to reach the target, and other times they surrounded the Pokemon in a circle. Other times they did whatever they wanted. She supposed it was up to Candle to get creative with it.

“Well, I wouldn't say me in particular, but I know of a few people that might be interested. And who knows, she might get along with us after all. Not that I really need more people in my apartment,” Ivy answered, saying the last sentence under her breath. I chuckled and moved out of the way so as not to provide any distraction while Ivy contemplated what Pokemon to use. After a few minutes she released her Chandelure, which emerged from her Ball with a happy little cry. Luckily we were too far from Gligar for her to hear all the commotion, so she didn’t turn around.

Ivy gave Candle her orders, which were Astonish followed by Will-o-Wisp, and the Chandelure was quick to get the ball rolling. As her Trainer suggested, the Pokemon stayed well above the ground as she sped towards Gligar, effectively rendering moves like Earthquake useless unless she should get knocked from the air. As she floated towards her target, the flames on her “arms” took on a silver-red hue.

Just as Candle reached her opponent, Gligar seemed to sense her presence and spun around. At that moment Candle unleashed her Astonish, flinging her arms forward at the same time. Ghost Pokemon all had their own unique way of using Astonish, so it was impossible to see exactly what Gligar saw. It had to be extremely startling, because the bat-scorpion gave a loud shriek of surprise and froze in place, stunned into immobility.

Candle took the opportunity to employ her Will-o-Wisp, the silver-red flames on her arms spitting out several tiny orbs. These gracefully floated towards the shocked Gligar, encircling her and dancing about before abruptly flying towards her. Gligar yelped in pain as a burn inflicted itself on her, though it also spurred her into action. She lashed out with her pinchers and tail, not trying to hit Candle, but rather stirring up a great deal of sand and grit. She then flapped her wings, catching the airborne particles and whipping them into a frenzy. The Gligar then moved backwards, trying to get lost in the Sandstorm she’d created as the grit scoured Candle’s body.

“Got us a sneaky one here,” I said. “She seems to startle easily, too. That Sandstorm might prove to be tricky to work around.”

@Dog of Hellsing; Weird idea is weird.

    TP#7

The Gligar chose to turn around just as Candle was close to her, and upon using Astonish, the little bat screeched and froze for a second. It was sort of like the people Candle use to fool by the apartment. Some of them froze shock-still like that, while others (particularly the more wasted ones) tended to shriek and run the other direction. Her and Haxbat had a ton of fun quite a few times in the alleys near the bars.

Unfortunately for the Gligar, that few second pause was just enough time for Candle to get off her Will-o-Wisp technique, and as Ivy watched, the silvery red orbs jumped and danced around the flying scorpion until they all flashed toward her at once. She saw the burn take effect as the Gligar yelped. Ivy felt a little bad about it, but she was preserving her own Pokemon too. She'd make up for it later.

That burn was just the motivation the Gligar needed too, because she instantly reacted. She lashed out, but she wasn't aiming at Candle. Instead, she churned up the sand and dirt around her until it started to dance aloft on its own – a Sandstorm had started. Then, the purple bat extended her winds and allowed the draft to carry her off into the storm, effectively hiding her for a moment.

Candle grimaced as the sand struck her, and she shook off the dirt that clung to her and made a vague spitting-action, even though Ivy was pretty sure she didn't swallow any.

“Got us a sneaky one here,” Trainer said, and Ivy nodded.

“It's a good thing I'm used to trickery,” she replied. “Haxbat and I do things like this sometimes to work on his stealth, only it's usually in the woods and not the desert. Hmm...” she trailed off, thinking hard.

The sandstorm would start wearing down her Pokemon soon, and it wasn't going to affect the Gligar because of her Ground-typing. That meant that they had to make this as short as possible. She hadn't brought a Ground-type with her to switch out into, so that meant Candle was going to have to finish this if she could. Ivy didn't even have a Ground-type. Maybe this Gligar would be fun to have around after all.

“You alright out there, Candle?” she called, wanting to make sure her Pokemon was okay.

In response, Candle let out a happy but defiant call. A little sand wasn't going to scare her. Ivy was glad. It meant they had room to try out new things.

That was one of the advantages of working in the Park as a Ranger. She had seen a lot of unique and creative combinations that had turned out really well, and in turn, those inspired her own. That and when she and her team went to the beach. At least, that's where this strange idea was coming from.

Sometimes she'd take her Pokemon to Sunnyshore where they could walk along the white sands and let the water rush up over their toes. Haji particularly liked it because of the heat. It never seemed to be cloudy there, at least not while they were there. She had almost even gotten an apartment there because she liked it so much – if their rent prices hadn't been through the roof.

Candle liked it too, and that was what helped drag up this memory. Sometimes they found smooth, shiny stones in the sand. That was one of the Chandelure's favorite things to do since she didn't really like the water much. Candle had wanted to know what they were, and it turned out that they were glass. There were a few glass sculpture-selling shops in Sunnyshore, and they were usually in weird and fascinating shapes. They got their materials from the beach, setting up lightning rods when there was going to be a thunder storm. The heat and energy from the lightning struck the sand and made glass. That was what she was going to try and replicate.

“Hey, Candle, remember the beach in Sunnyshore?” she asked. The Fire-type nodded her head rapidly with a happy sound. “We're going to try our hand at making our own glass figurines. How does that sound? Want to try?”

Like she thought, Candle was enthusiastic about it. Maybe if something interesting came out, they could keep a memento. That was, if it didn't disappear when the room shifted back to its natural setting. She wasn't sure how much of this was really real or not.

“The first step is going to be Calm Mind. We need to get a general lock on to where the Gligar is hiding in the sand for this to work. Then I want you to ready your Hidden Power.”

Candle began to focus, and in theory, this technique cleared the mind and allowed the user to focus more on what was going on. Ghosts and Psychic-types especially picked up on energy signatures more, and that's what Ivy was hoping on. Candle might not be able to see where the Gligar was, but she might be able to sense the general area of where she was hiding. It would also connect to her own reservoirs of energy, allowing her greater access and as a result, powering up her attacks that used mental effort.

Then, orbs of a yellow-tinted nature began to appear around her, getting ready to strike. The elemental type of Candle's Hidden Power was Electric, something she had been somewhat laughed at for. A lot of professional battlers preferred the Ice-type, since it was more effective on more Pokemon. It was said that with a lot of effort, Trainers could help their Pokemon shift their Hidden Power to some other type if done right. Ivy thought that since this was her natural power, she should stick with it.

Besides, an Ice-type attack wouldn't have saved her in the Woods when the poachers had attacked her with a stun gun. Electricity did.

When Ivy thought she was ready, she told Candle of the last phase of the plan. “Okay, when you've got a decent sense of the Gligar's location in the sandstorm, I want you to let loose the electricity. It won't affect her, but if you hit enough of the sand hard enough, some of it should turn to glass, or at least something hard-surfaced similar to it. Then, whip up a Fire Spin and drag all of that together around the Gligar.”

The plan was a little iffy, but the Park allowed her a safe place to try out combinations for battles. She didn't really battle often, but sometimes wages from the Park just weren't enough. Professional battlers made a lot more money, and they still had to eat and pay rent.

She hoped the Fire Spin, combined with the rattling of hard pieces of sand, would start wearing the Gligar down before she could get a big hit off on Candle. The Chandelure could hit a lot harder than Ivy was telling her too, but they didn't want to accidentally knock the wild Pokemon out. Now she just had to see what happened next.

I wasn’t quite sure what Ivy had in mind with the glass thing, but she obviously had a plan of some sort. I would simply have to wait and see if the outcome matched whatever idea she had in mind. Her Pokemon wasted no time getting to her commands, starting off with a Calm Mind. The ghostly chandelier curled her arms inward a bit and began to gently sway back and forth, focusing her concentration and seemingly oblivious to the Sandstorm raging around her. After a few moments, the flames on her arms (which had returned to their normal lavender hue after her Will-o-Wisp) began to burn brighter. The Ghost slowly uncurled her arms, an untroubled look in her eyes now as she peered into the roiling sand.

After a few moments, the flames on Candle’s arms started to change color until they were a bright electric yellow with occasional electric-blue streaks. Candle’s Hidden Power, being Electric, momentarily replaced the flames with crackling voltage, including the flame atop her head. As she readied the move in preparation for release, tendrils of electricity began to twist away from the Pokemon’s arms and head, filling the air with a static charge. Her earlier Calm Mind was bolstering the attack’s strength, lending it greater power than it would normally have and also increasing the static after-effect. Then, with a loud snapping-popping-cracking noise that reminded me of some kind of electronic device exploding, several ropes of electricity burst from Candle’s “flames”. It arched through the air, having no real target but striking wildly. From within the Sandstorm I heard a startled squeal; Gligar would be immune to the attack thanks to her partial Ground typing, but getting hit would probably still be surprising, as well as the abrupt blast of noise from the attack’s release.

Candle didn’t let the startled cry distract her as her flames returned to normal. She raised her arms and started swinging them back and forth, and at the same time the fires began to rise. They grew higher and higher the more the Pokemon swing her arms, but before she could whip the growing flames into a whirlwind for her Fire Spin, something came hurtling out of the sand. In fact, it was a few small black somethings. I couldn’t tell how many there were, but several struck Candle and caused her to lose her focus as she flinched away from the sudden assault. Once the objects landed I saw what they were; glass, apparently formed from Candle’s previous Hidden Power. They had probably been meant to attack Gligar somehow, but the bat-scorpion seemed to have used Ivy’s idea against her. Luckily the glass bits didn’t seem to do much damage, but they did keep Candle distracted long enough for what appeared to be Gligar’s real attack. Two rocks came out of the sand shortly after the glass pieces; one went a bit too high and missed Candle altogether, but the second struck the left side of her body before hitting the ground.

Candle, for what it was worth, recovered relatively quickly. She didn’t seem too awfully ruffled by the attack, though I could tell she was moving a bit slower now. The rock must have hit a vulnerable area, since the Ghost seemed more focused on keeping her side from being hit again and less concerned about moving quickly. Before Gligar could strike again, she turned her hit side away from where the attack had come from and began to swing her arms again. This time no glass pieces or rocks came flying out of the sand to hit her, and she was able to get her Fire Spin going. She spun around as she released it, which caused it to whirl around behind her and suck up the glass pieces before spiraling off into the Sandstorm. It wasn’t long before another screech sounded out, and moments later Gligar appeared above the Sandstorm. She looked a bit charred; obviously the Fire Spin had hit, and there were a few red marks on her body as well. Apparently the glass pieces, heated by the fiery tornado they’d been drawn into, had battered the Pokemon a bit before she flew above the blazing vortex. This was a double-edged sword, though; she was out of the Fire Spin’s range, but she was also out of the protective cover of the Sandstorm. It was clear by the way she occasionally dipped towards the flying sands that she didn’t like being exposed, but equally obvious that she was spooked by the Fire Spin and the thought of flying into it since she kept pulling back up at the last moment.

“Neat idea with the glass thing,” I said, figuring her idea must have been to try to deal damage not just with the Fire Spin, but the glass pieces as well. “It might have backfired a little, but in the end you managed to chase Gligar out of cover. Not sure if that was intended or not, but it should help out some. Until she gets desperate and decides to go back into the Sandstorm, anyways.”

@Dog of Hellsing; The glass thing may or may not have been influenced by Sweet Home Alabama >.> <.<

    TP#8

“Neat idea with the glass thing,” Trainer said, and Ivy nodded.

It hadn't really quite worked out the way she imagined, but scaring the Gligar out of the sandstorm cover was probably going to be beneficial. The purple bat kept trying to dip back down toward the sand cover, but she always pulled back up, scared by the Fire Spin and was still roiling. Ivy hadn't thought much farther ahead than planning out the attack; she had just wanted to see if it would work.

She was actually kinda surprised the Fire Spin was still going. Candle must've been too focused on her task to bother putting it out afterward. That did give Ivy an idea that they could maybe use next, however, so she didn't mind.

“You okay out there, Candle?” she called after her Pokemon. She had flinched when the rocks had come tumbling out of the storm. Even if they hadn't hit the Chandelure head-on, it still looked like she took a good amount of damage from it. She was glad they had burned the Gligar straight away. She didn't want to think about what shape her ghost would be in if they hadn't.

“Luuuure,” the Fire-type called out, sounding a little bit weary. Then she seemed to remember herself and straightened up, waving her flaming arms in a battle-esque pose. She gave another cry, but this one was more focused and defiant, so Ivy knew she was okay.

“She is tired,” Haji said against her mind, and she nodded. He wasn't talking about Candle. The peppy Fire-type had more energy than she knew what to do with.

She wanted to end this battle soon, even if it seemed like she was rushing. She believed the Chandelure could pull off what she was thinking.

“Okay, let's try to make this next phase our last,” Ivy said to her, seeing the ghost nod in response. She pointed toward the Fire Spin. “Since you kindly kept the Spin going, let's use it some more. This time, it can be your elevator. Rise up within the flames to where the Gligar is flying, and ready a Hex on the way.”

Since the Chandelure had her Flash Fire ability active, it meant that she wouldn't be hurt by her own flame – or any flame, for that matter. It was really handy, especially in battle, since that covered her other Pokemon from fire damage. Sometimes Candle could even convert that fire absorption into energy to power up her own flame attacks, but they wouldn't need that now.

“When you attack, focus on her wings. We don't want to knock her out, but if you could make it so she struggles to fly, that would help. Then try to push her my way with a Flame Charge. You won't have to hit her super hard – just enough that I can get a good aim without her flying back into the sand. We shouldn't need the Fire Spin after that, so you can let it die out.”

Ivy pulled out a Park Ball from her vest and hit the button to enlarge it. She wasn't the best thrower ever, but if this worked out, the Gligar should come sailing her way.

Hex was kind of a tricky move. Using a sensory mental power, the user attacked a foe and lowered their energy. The real reason for using it was when the target had a status of some sort though, since this particular technique heightened senses and made the foe really feel the affects of whatever status they had. In their case, it would nearly double the feel of the burn. If Candle focused mainly on the wings, and with her boost in mental energy thanks to the Calm Mind she should, Ivy wouldn't have to worry about her being knocked out.

Candle gave a cry and headed for the Fire Spin, intending to use it as an elevator. Ivy got ready to throw, but was prepared to think of something else if this didn't work out. For all they knew, Candle could end up missing completely and the bat could fly back into hiding. She just had to think positive.

Ivy wanted to wrap things up, and it was easy to tell why. Not only was Candle taking continuous damage from the Sandstorm, but Gligar was beginning to lag as well. Dragging the battle on much longer really wouldn’t serve any purpose. The Trainer had a unique idea to get things on the ball; since Candle could only levitate so high on her own power, Gligar was currently out of reach thanks to her current altitude. Any long-range attacks Candle might know would easily be dodged, since Gligar would see them coming long before they hit. In order to counter this, Ivy ordered Candle to ride her Fire Spin into the air so she could get close enough to her opponent to use her attacks effectively.

Candle, while seeming to be a bit winded, was more than willing to go with the plan. She flew forward into the heart of the Sandstorm, where the Fire Spin was still twisting about; several moments later, she came back into view above the Sandstorm, just a few feet below Gligar. The bat-scorpion let out a little shriek of surprise and lashed out with her tail. The stinger just barely grazed Candle’s face, which Candle was able to ignore in favor of using her Hex attack. Her eyes took on an eerie red hue and the flames on her arms and head turned dark crimson as they flared brighter. Wisps of black energy rose from the flames and condensed into small spheres; when several of these had formed, they shot forward and struck Gligar’s wings.

Gligar’s reaction was immediate. She let out a shrill cry as the Hex drew power from her burn, intensifying both the status and the move’s power. Her wings faltered and she began to fall, only barely catching herself and gliding now instead of actively flying. She was below Candle now, who was slowly losing altitude, and heading back towards the Sandstorm. Candle wasn’t about to let her target get back under the storm’s cover, though. Once her eyes and flames returned to their normal color, she became engulfed in red-oranges flames. The ghostly fire fueled the Pokemon’s internal furnace, giving her a boost of speed as she darted towards Gligar. Just before she collided with the bat-scorpion, Candle shifted her direction a bit. Instead of slamming into the Pokemon head-on, the blow was more like a forceful push in Ivy’s direction. The additional momentum, on top of her sore wings, caused Gligar to go into a tail-spin. She let out a squeal as she tried to straighten herself, but before she could fall too far Ivy threw a ParkBall. It bounced off Gligar’s chest before popping open and sucking her inside. There was still a fair distance for the Ball to go before it hit the ground, but it didn’t pop back open as it fell.

“Be a dear and fetch that, Bloodstone,” I said to my Sableye, who cackled and hopped to the ground. He darted over and stood under the ParkBall’s path, leaping into the air and neatly snatching it once it came close enough. He then came back to me, clambering up my pants and putting the ParkBall in my hip pack before continuing on to my shoulder. He then settled himself down and made a breathy sort of laughing noise, clearly pleased with himself.

“Good deal,” I said, walking back over to stand near Ivy. “At this rate you might end up taking out the limit. It never surprises me how many people leave with only one or two Pokemon.” I then glanced at the Sandstorm, which was beginning to die down now. Candle had put out her Fire Spin apparently, since I didn’t see it any more through the dwindling Sandstorm. The Pokemon herself had lost the altitude she’d gained from the move, hovering now at her normal height.

“Do you want to wait a minute to rest a bit, or should we push onward?”

Ivy's plan worked out perfectly this time, and her aim was true as Candle knocked the Gligar her way. The Park Ball she threw snapped shut, and before it could hit the ground with its descent, Trainer's Sableye dashed off and snatched it up. He returned to the Ranger and happily sat back on her shoulder, looking pleased with himself.

“Good deal,” she said, coming over to stand near Ivy. “At this rate you might end up taking out the limit. It never surprises me how many people leave with only one or two Pokemon.”

“Me either,” Ivy replied. “A lot of my runs are like that. I hope to take out the four limit, even if a couple of them are Pokemon other Trainers are looking for. I'm really likeing the thought of having this Gligar around, though. I feel she and Haxbat will get along great. Don't you think so, Candle?” she asked, turning toward her ghost.

The Chandelure gave a happy sound and waved her arms. She was now back on the ground with them, looking pretty pleased herself.

“You did well.” she heard Haji say to her, and that elected another happy outburst. She started to dance around the Espeon too, bobbing up and down as she floated through the air. For some reason, all of her Pokemon thought of the purple cat as the boss, and she supposed she could see why. They all thought he was probably the wisest of all of them. That was, except Vergil, who really wasn't positive about anything.

“Great job, Candle,” Ivy said. “You deserve a rest.” She then called her back into her ball and added it to her vest pocket.

“Do you want to wait a minute to rest a bit, or should we push onward?” Trainer asked.

“I think we're okay to keep going. We've got a lot of trail to blaze yet.”

Ivy opted to keep going, probably buoyed by the fact that she’d run into a few good Pokemon already. I nodded and lead the way, heading the opposite way from the nearly-over Sandstorm. It was mostly just a lot of sand and grit settling now, but I doubted anyone felt like trudging through it and getting sand all over them. This time the replica of the area didn’t revert after a few moments, which meant we had to bear the uncomfortable heat of the volcano for a while.

“Sorry,” I apologized with a smile. “Like I said, the Ruins like to hang on to their last generated area when I’m around. Things changing back to normal was probably a fluke the last time.” Bloodstone cackled again at this, clearly amused with my bad luck, and I resisted the urge to poke him. “With any luck another Pokemon will be teleported in soon and we won’t have to wander around in this heat for long.”

We walked for about five minutes before that odd grind-and-shimmer that signaled a shift happened. When things settled down this time, we were standing in a large field that went on for miles. The sky was gray with thick clouds, but the air was comfortably warm rather than oppressively hot. A cool breeze was blowing, which felt nice after being hot for so long. The breeze didn’t last long, but it was a windy day in the Botanic Garden, as another breeze picked up a few minutes later.

Off in the distance I saw a shape standing in the knee-high grass. I couldn’t make out too much of it at first until it turned sideways. It was a Miltank and it appeared to be grazing, its head immersed in the grass up to where its neck joined its shoulders. It was moving around on all fours; most people thought Miltank were always bipedal, but really they only moved on their back legs during battle, as it allowed a greater range of motion and more attacking ability. When not in battle, they supported their bulk better by walking on all fours.

“Seems like this is your next encounter,” I said as the pink cow raised her head, chewing on what looked like a clump of grass with some flowers mixed in. One black ear twitched in our direction and the Pokemon glanced over, still eating. She didn’t seem at all concerned with our presence and soon buried her head in the grass again, acting as if we weren’t even there. I laughed a bit. “Wow, she seems to be more worried about filling her belly than paying us any attention.”

Ivy pulled at her turtleneck again as the heat from the Deckbi impersonation continued. It was a little hot, but she knew that being at the real place would be worse. Besides, it was the cooler season, and the scenery would probably be changing soon anyway. With any look, she wouldn't start to sweat.

“Sorry,” Trainer apologized. “Like I said, the Ruins like to hang on to their last generated area when I'm around. Things changing back to normal was probably a fluke the last time.”

Ivy laughed a little and shook her head. “It's okay. The real Deckbi would be much worse than this anyway.”

They traveled for another few minutes before Ivy heard that strange grinding sound again, and then the area began to change. Grass bloomed under their feet, and the wispy plants seemed to go on forever. Ivy recognized the field as some place similar to the Gardens. She looked up to see it was slightly dark, though, with all the cloud cover. Maybe it was going to rain. The breeze didn't smell like water yet.

Trainer pointed out a Pokemon in the distance. A Pokemon on four legs was grazing out in the field. The grass was pretty long out there, since the blades reached its shoulders. Ivy could barely make out its form.

“Seems like this is your next encounter,” the Ranger said, and then the Pokemon revealed itself.

Ivy saw it was a Miltank as the pink cow looked up. She was peacefully chewing her food, not caring that they were watching one bit. In fact, she ignored them as she went back to eating, only sparing them a small glance.

“Wow, she seems to be more worried about filling her belly than paying us any attention.”

“No joke!” Ivy laughed. “I do know someone who is looking for a Miltank, though, so I think I'll take a shot at her.”

One of Chainy's brothers, the youngest one, was the person she was thinking of. Jathan was a Breeder, and he loved to collect all sorts of Pokemon. Every once in a while he'd send a notice in or let Chainy know he was looking for a specific Pokemon. One of Leo's brothers was a collector too, and he often did the same thing. It didn't hurt to look for other people.

She knew which Pokemon she wanted to use this time. Brin, her Conkeldurr, hadn't seen any action yet. Besides, Normal-types like Miltank were susceptible to his Fighting-type attacks. She knew the sow could take a few hits, though, so this fight wouldn't be easy. They had to be careful not to knock her out either.

“Okay, Brin, it's your turn,” she called as she pulled out his Pokeball.

In a flash of light, the fighter appeared. The Conkeldurr slowly worked his muscles, limbering up from being inside the ball for so long. The heavy concrete pillars he carried in each hand were almost as tall as he was. A lot of Pokemon were intimidated by them. Still, it wasn't a problem for the tanned Pokemon. His purple veins helped the blood flow through his body to make using the weapons possible.

“Hmm,” she mused, not calling out anything right away. Brin turned to look at her silently. He wasn't a real big talker in their group, even back home. He did nod toward Haji when he saw the purple cat.

The problem was, she didn't know which ability the Miltank had at the forefront. One protected her against Ice and Fire-type attacks, and one allowed her to see through and overcome a ghost's ability to become invisible. It was the last one that Ivy worried about slightly. It was called Sap Sipper, and it would make Grass-type moves ineffective on top of powering her up. It wasn't as if a lot of her Pokemon used those types of moves, but it would be useful to know. Since the cow was surrounded by grass, she might be able to do something weird to power herself up.

She nodded to herself. If Brin was okay with it, she wanted to find out which ability Miltank had.

“Okay, Brin, we're gonna try something different if you're up for it.” He nodded, so she continued. “I'd like to know what ability that Miltank over there has. We need to get her attention anyway, since she's preoccupied. Let's start off easy and send a Bulldoze her way. Combine it with Grass Knot too, so we can see if she's using Sap Sipper. If she is, she'll become stronger, and that'll make the battle harder for you. Is that okay?” she asked.

Brin just nodded again. There was pretty little that could phase him, since he was pretty brave too, like Candle was. Way less enthusiastic about it, though.

Bulldoze was sort of the Ground version of surf in a way. At least, that's how Ivy saw him use it. With a powerful stomp of his pillars, a wave would form under the ground and travel toward his foe. Sometimes the earth was kicked up and sent over the target, slowing them down for a little while.

The Conkeldurr would also call on the roots in the ground, and those could travel with the Bulldoze wave. He wasn't a great attacker with things like nature and that, being more physically based, but this was just a test anyway. If the Grass Knot didn't wrap around and try to trap the cow, or something equally as different happened, then Ivy would know what they were up against.

She worried a little about disturbing the Miltank, but they had to get her attention some way. Brin wasn't using his most powerful attacks yet, at least. She wanted to see how the cow was giong to react before she planned further. She knew they could be fast and creative, so this might be a challenge.

“Okay, let's see if we can get her attention,” she said, giving Brin the go ahead.

Ivy was more than willing to grab Miltank, for a friend rather than herself. It was always nice when Trainers didn’t mind catching something for someone else, rather than only catching Pokemon they themselves were strictly interested in. Once again I moved away as another breeze blew, causing the grass to ripple like emerald ocean waves. This time Ivy went with her Conkeldurr, which was probably a good choice. Miltank were not only physically strong, they could absorb a large amount of damage as well. Conkeldurr were fairly tanky, so Brin would be able to take as much as he gave.

Ivy took a few minutes to think about her options once she let her Pokemon out of his Ball, and during that time Miltank only glanced up at us as she lazily chewed on a mouthful of grass. It was somewhat amazing how completely unconcerned she was with our presence; Miltank were generally peaceful creatures, but they also usually held a sense of curiosity for new things in their environment. Maybe this particular Miltank was just a bit…slow? Either way, it wasn’t long before she dipped her head back down to get another mouthful of grass.

“Okay, Brin, we're gonna try something different if you're up for it,” Ivy said, apparently coming up with an idea. Is that okay?” The Conkeldurr nodded in response, seemingly unruffled by what must have been a new tactic. “Okay, let's see if we can get her attention,” the Trainer finished, signaling that it was time to start.

Brin wasted no time, lifting his massive concrete pillars and slamming them into the ground. The shock waves when they hit the ground caused a sort of wave to ripple outwards, aimed straight at Miltank. When the wave was a few feet from Miltank, the grass and flowers abruptly grew several feet, lashing themselves together into vine-like clusters. The Bulldoze struck Miltank first; the Grass Knot then entangled her legs and hooves as she was sent tumbling a few feet.

Much to my surprise, Miltank didn’t act at all shocked or distressed over her current situation. She rolled into a sitting position and blinked absently, licking her lips with a thick tongue and glancing at the thick cords of grass holding her prisoner. She stared at them for several moments before ducking her head down and starting to chew on one of the cords around her right forehoof.

“She’s…eating Brin’s attack,” I said, my voice blank. I’d never seen anything like this in my years of running the Park. “That’s certainly unexpected. It’s almost like she didn’t just get attacked.” Even as I spoke, the cow hefted herself to her hind hooves. She was held in place by the Grass Knot still wrapped around her other three legs (she’d chewed the right forehoof free by now), but she had a small range of motion. Almost as if it were an afterthought, she curled her freed hoof inward and threw her weight towards the ground, punching her “fist” into the soft earth. A wave like the one Brin had unleashed earlier tore towards the Conkeldurr. He didn’t have time to dodge, since the return Bulldoze was so unexpected, and the shifting ground caused him to stumble back when the attack hit.

“Well, she might not have Sap Sipper, but Grass moves hardly seem to bother her,” I said after a moment, watching in disbelief as Miltank swallowed the mouthful of grass she’d gotten from freeing her hoof. “This seems like it’ll be an interesting battle, to say the least.”

Ivy watched Brin's attack wash over the cow, and the result wasn't quite what she expected. The vines came and wrapped around the Miltank, but she didn't freak out. She rolled up to the sitting position that most people associated with when she battled, and just stared at the plants. Then, to Ivy's surprise, she dipped her head down and started chewing on them just like they had been the wild blades she was munching on before.

“She's.... eating Brin's attack,” Trainer said, and all Ivy could do was nod. As they watched, the vines started to disappear into her stomach. Ivy just hoped she wasn't gaining strength from them. “It's almost like she didn't just get attacked,” the Ranger commented, and that's what worried her. Brin wasn't a great special attacker as it was, but she didn't want the attack to be ineffective either.

Then, the cow managed to free a leg enough to slam the hoof to the floor. The ground rippled in response, and a wave of dirt came flying at Brin. It was the same Bulldoze technique he had just used. Unfortunately, the Conkeldurr was not a fast mover in hardly anything. He made up for that with his sturdiness. Still, Ivy felt a little bad as she watched him get bowled over by the force of the dirt.

He got up without too much of a fuss, using his heavy pillars to brace himself as he stood. He didn't look too damaged by the attack.

“Well, she might not have Sap Sipper, but Grass moves hardly seem to bother her.”

“Lucky for us, Brin doesn't use a lot of those anyway,” Ivy said. She was pretty relieved she hadn't made this battle harder for Brin on a whim, even if she knew he'd be okay with it. Sometimes she worried about what she asked him to do since he hadn't been on the team that long compared to some of the others. She hadn't raised him up – instead he had joined when he was already a Conkeldurr.

It was a little strange, how they met. Ever since the threat of poachers had become more common in the Park, Ivy had taken up relearning self defense. If she had time, she would've taken formal classes in Veilstone or somewhere close to her home, but she worked too much for that. Instead, she did basic movements and strength training that she found in videos and articles on the internet. She had taken a little Tae Kwan Do and Judo when she was younger, before she seriously became a Ranger, so she often practiced things she remembered and did refreshers on moves she didn't.

Her favorite place to exercise was near her childhood home, even if she hated to be at that house. Most of the time she avoided going to the place entirely, instead trailing through the woods of Eterna that surrounded her property and heading up into Mount Coronet. The rocky terrain was extra incentive to perform routines correctly so she didn't fall onto the dangerous ground.

She used to spend entire days up there, when she wasn't working. It didn't happen too often, but for a while she was managing to get away at least once a week. That was when she met Brin for the first time.

She didn't see a lot of wild Pokemon up on the mountain when she was there, probably due to the fact that Trainers often scared them away. One time, however, as she was locked in a pose, she felt eyes on her. When she looked, she had seen the Conkeldurr eying her from a higher rock shelf. She hadn't stopped her training and he hadn't made any motions to either fight or join, so they left each other alone. That had happened a couple times.

Then, one time it occurred in reverse, and it was Ivy that stumbled along the fighter. He was being bombarded by Zubat from a nearby cave. She figured a hiker or other Trainer must've spooked them, and when they came out into the light, they went after the first thing they sensed.

He had been waving his pillars to try and get them to leave him alone, but he didn't move as fast as the bats. Being a Ranger, she didn't want to hurt them, but she also hadn't wanted the Conkeldurr to suffer. What she had done was put her fingers up to her lips and whistle, making the sound bounce off the rocks and all around the area she was in. Then, when they had freaked out, she released Haxbat so he could chase them back into the cave they came from. The extra noise had confused them, since Zubat could only 'see' with their sonar abilities.

The fighter had been impressed with both how she got rid of the pests, but her Crobat's maneuverability. They had trained together then, and Brin had actually managed to beat her bat after a couple attempts, using a helpful technique she was going to implement now.

When Ivy had asked them to join their team, he had accepted without hesitating. Through their training she had earned his trust, and that hadn't stopped. A lot of people thought Brin was slow in the mind because he moved his body that way, but she thought he was one of the wisest of her party. He was probably one of the oldest too, but she hadn't asked him.

Vergil, her Gallade, hadn't been very pleased about other fighter hanging around, but Vergil was rarely happy about anything. He hadn't picked a fight with the older one yet, thankfully, and she was hoping to keep it that way. It was a good thing that Brin knew better than to rise to the Gallade's taunts.

“Okay, Brin, start using Bulk Up so you can take some of these hits better. She can still attack you long range and with elemental attacks, but we'll need the power when you get in close.” Bulk Up was a technique that loosened up his muscles and allowed his veins to grow, increasing the blood flow in his body to make him both more powerful and able to handle more hits.

“Next, I want you to get ready to Counter anything she throws at you. If she keeps her distance, focus on using a Drain Punch instead. As long as we don't knock her out, we'll be okay. A nice, solid hit should start wearing her down.”

Counter would let Brin do exactly that: launch a counterattack after being attacked. Ivy had a feeling that this cow probably wasn't going to venture too close right away, if at all, though. She had been keeping her distance so far along with mostly ignoring them, so eventually Brin was going to have to move in an attack. He wouldn't do it that fast, which slightly worried her. Thankfully, Drain Punch was an energy-sapping technique, so if Brin got super damaged, he'd be able to get a little of that strength back.

Ivy wasn't too worried about battling quickly, since that wasn't how Brin rolled. She would see what the cow was doing next, and then she'd plan her next move. Brin still had a few tricks up his sleeves that they could use if none of this worked out.

Ivy seemed momentarily distracted, or perhaps caught in a memory or something. Either that or she was contemplating what to do about Miltank. The bovine herself was clearly not very concerned with things, idly scratching the side of her head and yawning hugely. Either she was bored or completely unfamiliar with battling. She then began to chew on the grass ropes around her left forehoof, one ear twitching as a fly or some other insect landed on it. I simply shook my head at the Pokemon’s complete lack of motivation to strike Brin before he attacked again. It didn’t really matter much since, after a few moments Ivy seemed ready to continue.

“Okay, Brin, start using Bulk Up so you can take some of these hits better. She can still attack you long range and with elemental attacks, but we'll need the power when you get in close,” the Trainer told her Pokemon. “Next, I want you to get ready to Counter anything she throws at you. If she keeps her distance, focus on using a Drain Punch instead. As long as we don't knock her out, we'll be okay. A nice, solid hit should start wearing her down.”

Brin just nodded before raise his concrete cylinders and thumping them into the ground hard enough to toss of bits of grass and dirt. His grip on the cylinders tightened a bit before relaxing; I could tell by his posture that his entire body was less tense. As a result of his slackened muscles, the blood flow to those muscles was increased, making them spongier and giving them more elasticity. This, in turn, would allow Brin to absorb more damage from the impact of Miltank’s attacks, as well as letting his body store more energy for his own moves.

For a moment the fighter waited, eyeing his adversary for any sign of reaction. When the bovine simply stared at him and took another bite out of the grass rope, Brin took it as a sign that the cow wasn’t going to bother trying to get her back legs free just yet and was content to simply sit there. He then raised his pillars and charged towards Miltank. He wasn’t moving very quickly, but there was a great deal of mass lending him momentum. When he got within striking distance he slammed his right pillar into the ground with enough force to sink it into the dirt at least a foot. It remained upright when he released it, curling his hand into a massive fist and throwing it at Miltank’s stomach. The blow was a solid hit that knocked Miltank flat on her back; it looked like, for a moment, she’d actually been knocked out.

But then she surged to her back hooves, head ducked down and small horns forward. The top of her skull smashed into Brin’s chest, causing him to stumble back several paces. He scowled for a moment before retrieving his pillar as Miltank shifted her weight backwards, staring at Brin before abruptly yawning again. She made a shrugging motion and tumbled back onto her rear, though it seemed she was drooping a bit now. She bit down on the last few threads of the grass rope around her forehoof and shook her leg once it was free, rolling her shoulders a bit and chewing on the grass in a lazy manner. The whole time, though, her eyes never left her opponent.

“It seems like Miltank is paying a bit more attention to Brin now,” I commented. “Though whether that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen.”

    @Dog of Hellsing;

It looked like the Miltank was capable of taking a lot of hits, even though she seemed like she was starting to wear out slightly. Granted, Brin wasn't operating at full strength because they didn't want to knock the cow out, but it was still impressive. Ivy would make sure Jathan paid dearly for her, and a voice in the back of her mind chuckled. Sometimes it was fun to see just how she unnerved the younger man.

The bovine was finally starting to pay more attention to them too, but Ivy didn't know if that was a good thing. In a way, it mostly was. At least with her moving around and acting, she could judge how much strength she had left and how hard to instruct Brin to hit. On the other, she didn't want the fighter to take too much damage either. She didn't know how much longer they were going to be in the Ruins, but they had barely started, and she didn't want to wear him out too early on. Even if they had captured three out of the four Pokemon allowed to take out of the Park, that didn't mean they would only battle four.

“Okay out there, Brin?” she called, but the fighter only nodded without looking back at her. He never was one for much talk, unlike Candle who never seemed to stop. They were a unique mix back at her apartment.

Ivy was at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. They needed to weaken the cow a little more, but she was unsure with what. She had proved capable of taking strong hits, but she was slightly worried that increasing Brin's hitting power too much would knock her out. She definitely wasn't going to stay in a Park Ball at her current energy level. Ivy wasn't even sure if she would when she was worn out. She might need to call on Haji to try and lull the bovine into sleep later.

“Brin speaks,” Haji suddenly said against her mind, the words coming in like they were a little cloudy. That meant that Haji was engaged in conversation with the fighter because otherwise his voice was crystal clear in her head.

Haji also didn't mean Brin was talking directly, since although not dumb, the Conkeldurr didn't think in smooth words and phrases like a lot of Psychic-types did. He usually thought in images and memories instead, which was really weird sometimes when communicating mind to mind, since he often showed her things that happened, only from his point of view. Sometimes those images were of her, and it was strange to see herself that way.

The Espeon was their connecting cable as a flutter of images clouded over her mind, complete with the white haze around the edges of them. She was suddenly moving through a grassy field, holding a large concrete pillar, only to slam it down and stretch out her arm, connecting with the belly of the Miltank.

Ivy blinked, but the image didn't dissipate or become hidden for a minute. She could see it with her eyes open or closed. It was strange, seeing the actual field in front of her while watching the back of her Pokemon while seeing his memory of it.

The memory focused in on the cow falling backwards though. It almost seemed to slow down as she rocked on her back for that very small window of vulnerability, and she realized that's what Brin was trying to emphasize. Maybe Haji had relayed her thoughts to him about switching in to put her to sleep? That would make sense if he was trying to find a safer opening for the Espeon.

“Great idea, Brin,” she called as the vision faded. “I think we'll use that soon. First, we need to wear out this Miltank a little more. Let's start out with an Earthquake, but only use it around half strength. We don't want to take down the Ruin walls or anything, even if we can't see them right now.”

Even at half power, when Brin slammed down his pillars into the ground, it would still give quite a shake to the area. She was more hoping that pieces of the ground would break up and give Brin some ammunition for his next technique.

“Hopefully the Miltank will be stunned a little bit from the quake, and then I want you to pick up some of the loose pieces of ground and throw them at her with a Rock Throw.”

She didn't anticipate the attacks doing too much damage to the cow, but something was better than nothing. She just had to bide a little time so that Haji could have the opportunity to come in.
