“Okay out there, Brin?” Ivy called, and Brin simply nodded. He didn’t look too badly put out, most likely because whatever damage Miltank’s Reversal did was negated by Brin’s Drain Punch. For now it seemed the Conkeldurr had the upper hand, since he clearly had more energy to continue battling than Miltank did, but of course things could change with one move. After all, Miltank were famous for their Milk Drink technique, in which they used their own milk for nourishment to regain HP. This Miltank didn’t seem to care enough to replenish her strength, or maybe she was just crafty and waiting until she really needed to use it.

There was a moment of silence as Ivy stared at the battlefield. I thought she was trying to come up with a way to carry on with the battle without hitting too hard when she abruptly called out, “Great idea, Brin.” I blinked in surprise, then shrugged. Conkeldurr were hardly capable of telepathy, but Ivy did have her Espeon with her, and he was still out of his Ball. He’d most likely relayed some kind of plan or tactic from Brin to Ivy. “I think we'll use that soon. First, we need to wear out this Miltank a little more. Let's start out with an Earthquake, but only use it around half strength. We don't want to take down the Ruin walls or anything, even if we can't see them right now. Hopefully the Miltank will be stunned a little bit from the quake, and then I want you to pick up some of the loose pieces of ground and throw them at her with a Rock Throw.”

I wondered what kind of plan had been whipped up but didn’t dwell on it for too long. After all, I’d most likely find out what it was soon, since the battle seemed to be winding down. Judging by Miltank’s posture, she wouldn’t be taking too awfully many more hits. Her ears flicked as Brin inclined his head at Ivy’s words, raising his concrete cylinders as high as his arms could stretch. Before Miltank could try and stop him, the Conkeldurr slammed the pillars into the ground with enough force to set the ground atremble. I’d seen wild Conkeldurr use Earthquake and knew that even though Brin’s execution was powerful, it was nowhere near as strong as it could have been. After all, Ivy had said to only go with about half of the move’s normal power.

The shaking caused several large fissure to tear themselves into the unsteady ground, and Miltank was sent tumbling when a fissure split open right under her, the force of parting earth knocking her back. The grassy restraints around her back legs were snapped by the Earthquake as well, freeing her from it completely. For a moment she laid on her back, clearly stunned, but it didn’t take her long to recover and realize she was no longer being held by the Grass Knot. She rolled onto her stomach and pushed herself onto all four hooves before heaving her weight upwards and taking the famous bipedal stance Miltank were known for.

By this time Brin had planted both of his pillars in the ground, grabbing large chunks of dirt and rock that had been torn free by his Earthquake. He hefted the debris in both hands as Miltank shifted her weight, twisting her upper body to the left and stretching out her forelegs. She then started to spin, rapidly picking up speed until she was a pink blur. It was a miracle how Pokemon didn’t pass out from doing things like that, but their bodies were structured to withstand the pressures and strains and battling.

At the same time Brin lobbed the debris he was holding, Miltank shot forward in a literal whirlwind of motion. The dirt-and-rock clump hit its target and broke apart; Miltank’s spinning caused the smaller bits to go flying in all directions. She was also pushed back a bit by the strength of the Rock Throw, but she soon found her momentum and was moving forward again. Before Brin could grab his pillars to use as a means of defense, Miltank closed the distance between them and careened into the larger Pokemon.

The impact of the Gyro Ball caused Brin to stagger back a few steps, but he managed to stay on his feet. He didn’t look too damaged, just a little winded, and his early Bulk Up was probably to thank for letting him absorb the momentum with minimal HP loss. Miltank, on the other hand, was tossed onto her back from the impact. She laid there for several seconds before finally rolling into a sitting position, looking considerably weaker than before the exchange. She sat in a slumped position, not the normal upright, alert position Miltank normally adopt when sitting on their haunches. She watched Brin as he went to retrieve his pillars before moving back so there were several feet between the two of them, but despite everything, still seemed content to let the Fighter move first rather than trying to launch an attack of her own.

@Dog of Hellsing; Park Ball, go, go, go!

    TP#13

“Nice work, Brin!” Ivy called as she watched the bovine slowly rocked back into her half-sitting battle position. She was definitely looked tired now, which was good for what Ivy planned to do next. She wanted to end this battle.

The Miltank wasn't moving in to attack Brin right away either, which further forecasted her worn-out status. At least that meant she didn't have to worry too much about her Pokemon getting severely damaged. She expected another attack or two, but she hoped to wrap this up before the Miltank suddenly got a battle spark.

Ivy pulled out a Park Ball from her front vest pocket and hit the button to expand the device. She wasn't going to throw it just yet, but very soon. She palmed it in her right hand as she

“Okay, Brin, now we're gonna do what you showed me. Dart in quick with a Mach Punch, but focus more on knocking her down and off-balance than doing damage. I want an easy-in for Haji. Then get back here. You did great.” With her left hand, she unclipped the Conkeldurr's Pokeball from her utility belt so she could call him back after his attack.

Then she looked down at her purple cat who had his senses focused sharply on the battlefield. “Okay,” she started. “When I call him back, I need you to step in and use Yawn. Miltank's pretty worn out, so just a little more should make her easier to capture. I would expect some sort of attack from her though, so be careful.”

Haji nodded and filled her mind with confident feelings. He never really got worried about anything, always staying calm and peaceful. It really helped her sometimes. The Psychic-type tensed a little, preparing to spring into battle.

Yawn was a bit of a strange move, involving literally yawning out a thin, filmy bubble that was pink in color. If it managed to hit the Miltank, when it popped it would instantly make her drowsy and thus less likely to fight the power of the capture device. Even if this move didn't work, she was still going to try her luck.

Then, she waited for her Pokemon to act so she could attempt the throw.

It seemed Ivy was ready to wrap the battle up and try catching Miltank. She took out a ParkBall and expanded it but held on to it for the time being, wanting to wear the bovine down a bit more before attempting the capture. She congratulated Brin for a job well done and gave him his final command of the fight; a Mach Punch to leave Miltank momentarily dazed, so Haji would have a chance to step in and try to lull Miltank to sleep with a Yawn. If it worked, the slumbering cow would be easier to capture than if she were still awake, even while being weakened.

Brin rushed forward without giving Miltank time to realize what was going on, jabbing the cylinder in his right hand at her before she could try to counter or dodge. The heavy concrete pillar caught Miltank between her chest and stomach, knocking her flat on her back and leaving her stunned. Ivy wasted no time recalling her Pokemon, and a moment later I saw Haji leap to his feet and race to take his teammate’s place. The lavender feline stopped a few feet from the dazed Miltank, his jaws opening and eyes scrunching shut as he heaved out a tired-sounding yawn. A filmy pink bubble emerged from his open mouth, floating lazily through the air towards Miltank as she struggled to sit up. Just as she managed, the pink bubble lightly collided with her chest, popping on contact. Miltank blinked, surprised, then released a huge yawn of her own. She shook her head, trying to clear the drowsiness that had gripped her, but seemed to be incapable of fighting the sudden tiredness. She also looked pretty low on energy, which most likely didn’t help her resist the influence of Haji’s Yawn; the cow was probably already pretty fatigued to begin with.

Miltank’s eyes slid shut and her head started to fall, but she abruptly snapped back awake. Shaking her head again, she blinked and tried to focus on Haji. It was a losing battle, though, as her head slowly started to fall again. It was at this point I saw a ParkBall come into view, bouncing off Miltank’s belly and drawing the cow into it. The sphere landed on the ground where it shook feebly a few times, then fell still. I was hardly surprised that Miltank didn’t manage to break free, since she was pretty worn out.

Bloodstone leaped off my shoulder and sashayed over to the ParkBall, snatching it up and scampering back to me as he chattered merrily. I took the Ball as he climbed up my leg and side, perching once more on my shoulder. I put the Ball in my pack and nodded towards Haji.

“Well that turned out fairly well, I think. It’s a good thing Miltank was so tired from battling Brin all this time or else she might have been able to counter after that Yawn. Now, would you like to keep moving, or take a few minutes to rest first?”

@Dog of Hellsing; Just curious, did you roll for Apricorn?

Ivy breathed a sigh of relief as the capture device clicked close. The Sableye scurried over in no time to pick up the ball and return it to his Trainer. He scrambled up Trainer's body to shit on her shoulder, upon which she took the ball from him and pocketed it for safe keeping.

She turned to Ivy and said, “Well that turned out fairly well, I think. It's a good thing Miltank was so tired from battling Brin all this time or else she might have been able to counter after that Yawn. Now, would you like to keep moving or take a few minutes to rest first?”

“Yeah, I was surprised she didn't make a move to attack Haji. She must've been more tired than I thought. I think we're okay to keep going, unless you want a break, Haji?” she asked as she looked at her purple cat. He serenely shook his head and sat back down next to her, looking no worse for the wear. “Okay, let's head out then. Brin will rest in his Pokeball for now – he's definitely earned his rest.”

I wasn’t surprised when Ivy said she’d prefer to keep going, since she hadn’t wanted to rest after the previous two battles either. I nodded and we headed off, the replicated Botanic Gardens a pleasant change after the heat of Mt. Deckbi. However, we’d only gone perhaps five or six yards when the area abruptly started to warp. When it was finished we were faced with yet another extreme, though this one was quite the opposite of Deckbi. Now we stood maybe thirty feet from the base of an ice-capped mountain, a snowy tundra spread before us in all directions. Leafless trees and tough little bushes dotted the landscape, and a soft yet chilly breeze was blowing. In fact, the general temperature had dropped by a significant amount; my breath now plumed visibly as I breathed out. A shiver found me, but I managed to push aside my discomfort when I spotted a bipedal lizard about the size of a toddler digging into the snow about five feet away. It clearly hadn’t noticed us yet, probably intent on finding something to eat. Its upper body was brown while its lower body was yellow; the yellow scales were loose and sagging.

“I’ll never understand why Fighting Pokemon chose to live here rather than somewhere a little warmer,” I sighed. “I’m sure they could train themselves just as well somewhere with a bit of sunshine.” I then chuckled a little and waved towards the Scraggy I’d noticed as Bloodstone chittered irritably because of the cold weather. “Ah well, we’re here at any rate. Feeling up to trying for that little fella over there?”

Ivy wasn't surprised when the scenery suddenly changed this time. The temperature plummeted, and snow appeared all around them. They were standing beneath the shadow of Mount Oktori. She remembered many runs in this place, including the one where a crazed Froslass had tried to possess her. That hadn't been fun.

There was a Pokemon here too. It stood out sharply against the white snow. It was a little orange lizard with bottom skin that looked like pants. The Scraggy was digging around in the snow, maybe looking for something.

Trainer sighed. “I'll never understand why Fighting Pokemon chose to live here rather than somewhere a little warmer. I'm sure they could train themselves just as well somewhere with a bit of sunshine.”

Ivy smiled. “The cold is great for stamina. Just ask, Brin. At any rate, I'm not looking for any more Fighting-types at the moment, so let's keep going if possible.”

She could just imagine Vergil's face if another fighter showed up. It didn't sound very good.

Ivy opted against battling Scraggy, which was completely oblivious to our presence as we started walking the other way. It only took a few minutes for the area to revert back to the normal sprawling network of tunnels and rooms that was the Ruins, for which I was grateful. I wasn’t really feeling up to traipsing around in the cold longer than I had to. I made a mental note to myself to start bringing at least a jacket whenever leading people through the Ruins.

We’d only gone down one hallway when the scene around us shifted yet again, this time taking on the form of the Great Lakes. It was warm and sunny, with just a faint breeze blowing. It was bright because of the water reflecting off the surface of several dozen large ponds, though, and I raised a hand to shield my eyes from the harsh glow.

“This place seem familiar?” I asked with a smile, wondering how many other Pokemon would be getting pulled in from the Lakes for Ivy’s run. I then saw movement near one of the closest ponds and focused on it; it turned out to be a large white seal lying on its back, basking in the sunlight. It had a small horn atop its head and its jaws were open a bit, its tongue lolling out. It looked like it was napping, but after a moment it shifted again and heaved itself onto its belly. It opened its eyes and blinked in surprise when it saw us.

    “Ever wanted a Seel?”

@Dog of Hellsing; I got cash for a doll if needed.

    TP#16

Soon, the environment changed again, shifting so that a warm breeze blew through the area and lifted Ivy's long, red hair slightly. Her vest ruffled in the wind, and she had to shield her eyes for a minute as an intense sunlight glinted off of the pool of water that had appeared. As she looked, she saw many others, signifying that they were now in a Great Lakes replica.

“This place seem familiar?” Trainer asked, and Ivy just shook her head and smiled.

“More so than I care to admit. At least this time it's more beach-like and we're not knee-deep in water,” she said. Not only had she already battled a Pokemon in this type of scenery, but she had also been to the real Lakes many times as Trainers hunted for commonly-sought Water-types.

“Ever wanted a Seel?” the Ranger asked while pointing out the Pokemon that looked to be napping in the sun. It was pure white, and its pink tongue was hanging out of its mouth as it slept. Soon though, it noticed them and flipped over so it was upright, blinding at them blearily.

Ivy shook her head. “Nah, Water-types are hard to keep at my apartment. It'll be hard enough with this Horsea I captured. I think I'll pass if we can. I can use a doll if needed. Hey there, little guy,” she said in greeting, smiling and waving at the still-sleepy creature, hoping to appease it somewhat so it would let them pass.

Ivy decided against battling Seel, mostly because of limitations where she lived. Unless she had a spare bathroom with a huge tub for a Dewgong to swim in, or a pool of some kind, I could understand why she was passing it up. The Seel simply stared at us for a few moments before scooting its way into the closest lake. I watched it go before heading off once more, and this time we barely got ten steps before the area started to shift. It soon settled, once again the normal Ruins, but it only stayed like that for perhaps a second before changing once again. The area became more shadowy and dark, but there were patches of glowing blue-green moss on the walls that now helped light the way a bit. The walls also closed in a bit and the ceiling dropped, forming a small cave around us that was uncomfortably warm and rather humid. I waved a hand in a futile effort to cool myself, then noticed movement in the dim light being given off by the moss.

I moved a bit closer and saw a dull-blue shape pressed against the wall nearby. I scowled a little as I watched it, and sure enough it twitched again, sort of swaying back and forth a little. It then abruptly flew back away from the wall, hovering in midair as it spun like a crazy top. I hastily stepped back a few steps, but the thing, which I could now tell was a Bronzor, made no moves to attack as it finally fell still facing us. Its front had been pressed against the rock, which is why I hadn’t been able to identify it right away in the poor light.

“How do you feel about a Bronzor?” I asked Ivy, glancing over at her while also keeping an eye on the levitating Pokemon, just to make sure it didn’t try anything.

@Dog of Hellsing; Make it a- oh wait. It's genderless :(

    TP#17

The Seel wasn't very interested in them, so after checking them out, it slid back into the water, apparently done sun bathing for the day. That was fine with Ivy. Sometimes she hated disappointing the wild Pokemon, since a lot of them were so eager to battle or just interact with someone else. A lot of Pokemon went isolated for quite a long time. She hated even worse to have to battle them to escape, however, since that sort of went against her job. She used a doll whenever possible.

They continued on, and the area changed almost immediately. The lakes faded away, and the sunshine ceased. In fact, it became rather dark and shadowy, and even though there was hardly anything to see, Ivy knew these rocks. She knew Deckbi like the back of her hand. So many Trainers had gone there with her, looking for the rare and powerful Pokemon everyone sought on the mainland, like Drillbur or Volcarona.

Suddenly, she heard a whisper, or at least what she thought was a whisper. She couldn't quite make out the words. An image followed, one that didn't look familiar to her. It was fuzzy, and she could only make out rough, dark shapes lit up by light. The scene faded as soon as it appeared almost, and Ivy felt a wave of nausea come across her.

She put a hand out to steady herself on the wall, and her hand touched some of that fuzzy blue-green moss that tended to grow in Deckbi's tunnels. She hadn't felt anything like that since...

“Was that from a Psychic Pokemon?” she asked Haji inside her mind. She didn't want Trainer to think she was going soft or anything. Or crazy.

Haji had gone very hyper-aware, with his ears twitching and standing at his full height. “Indeed,” he answered, watching the area carefully.

“Great. I hope this isn't a repeat of last time.” The last time she went to Deckbi on a personal run, she and Haji's mental bond had just been settling in, and it had caused her to go crazy for a little bit, lost in her own mind as the energies settled down. Usually, that wasn't something that happened. She was one of the lucky ones.

She continued to follow Trainer through the cave, trying to ignore the fuzzy images that kept popping up. It was weird because she could still see what was happening in front of her; the mental picture was sort of transparent and lain over her main sight. They were all of the same thing, though. They all looked like images one would see here, in Mount Deckbi – the real one, at least.

Ivy felt Trainer's step change, like she had noticed something ahead. She wasn't close enough to see what had caught the woman's attention, however, so she waited. Then, she saw a blue shape fly off the wall and start spinning around and around. When it finally mostly stopped, Ivy caught glance of a blueish disk with a face on it.

“How do you feel about a Bronzor?” the Ranger asked, and Ivy had to consider it.

Haji had gone tense beside her, and he began to say something in her mind when another image assaulted her first. This time, she recognized the place. It wasn't blurry anymore. It was at the top of the volcano, on the rock shelf that edged around the opening. She had taken a Trainer named Synthesis up there where he ended up battling a Volcarona.

In fact, that's what she was seeing, only it wasn't from her perspective. She could see the form of her red canvas vest and her red hair as she stood on the rock ledge with Haji beside her. It was really weird seeing it like that, something she remembered by someone else's sight. Then, a multitude of other images followed, all too fast for her to really get a feel for specifics. She did notice that she was in all of them, however, highlighted by her red vest every time.

Were these the Bronzor's memories? Had it been watching them when they came to the mountain? She supposed she was there enough for it to be probable. Now that she focused too, she could feel a happy sort of emotion, and she was pretty sure it wasn't coming from Haji. The purple cat shook his head negative.

Ivy stepped up a little closer. “I think this Bronzor has been following me around on the mountain. I'm not sure how or why, but it's probably for a reason. I want to find out what it is, so I will battle,” she said.

She was going to need a Pokemon more suited to the energy-filled attacks rather than brute force here, since the Steel-type's defenses were really good. Thankfully she had a mix of both styles with her.

Not so surprisingly, Haji stepped out with her, willing to fight. Technically, it was his turn, even if he had helped Brin a little in the last one. He was probably the freshest, so she decided not to argue with them. Besides, Haji was a good fire worker, and that was one of the Bronzor's weaknesses. He might not be as good as Candle, but for not being Fire-type, Ivy thought he was amazing.

Of course, there was always the chance that this Pokemon had its Heatproof ability active, making it resist Fire-type attacks more than normal by reinforcing its coat. It tended to Levitate a lot as well, making it pretty hard to hit in battle. This would probably be interesting.

“Okay, Haji, I don't really have a plan this time, but let's start of strong. With any luck, we can make this fast. I think I feel a headache coming on.”

Thanks to all of the image sharing, she fell that dull buzzing in the back of her mind, and she had a feeling it was going to get stronger. After the first Deckbi incident, she was out sick for two weeks, and during that time, her head had burned like it was imploding. If she was going to get sick again, which was highly possible since Bronzor was a wild Pokemon, she didn't want to be in the middle of a run when it happened.

Ivy addressed the Bronzor. “You've been following me, haven't you? Well, since you want a fight, we'll give you one!” She turned back to Haji as she smiled, trying to get into the battle as much as possible. She thought maybe that was her problem with Vergil, since he loved to fight and she really didn't do it that often. She was going to use this as a learning experience, and maybe their relationship would improve.

“Haji, let's make this place really seem like Deckbi. Turn up the heat with a Sunny Day.”

She remembered the day when she was with Synthesis. The air had been boiling up there near the volcano opening. The lava had bubbled and popped in the deep bit below, and the turtleneck she was wearing had pretty much been painted onto her skin. Haji collected all of these thoughts through their psychic connection, and she hoped he would channel that feeling into his technique to really light this place up. She could endure the warmth for a little while.

“Then, strike hard with your Hidden Power. I guess we'll see if this one is more resistant to heat or not,” she said. “I can't really plan any more ahead than that, since I'm not sure of the Bronzor's style yet. I don't think you'll knock out the disk on your first shot. You know how to gauge it,” she reminded him, just in case.

The Espeon's Hidden Power type was Fire. Under the sun, he was pretty deadly. He could conjure orbs of flame, somewhat like Candle's Will-o-Wisps, and they hit pretty hard when powered up by the sun. He was probably her strongest battler, although that wasn't really because of this skill.

She felt his energy rise as Haji's eyes started to glow, preparing to create a miniature sun in the sky. This hallway was going to get bright, and probably stifling too. The hair on her arms stood up as his energy reached a peak, and then he started to move.

It seemed Bronzor was a winner, though it was kind of hard to imagine anyone running from a Pokemon that had apparently been trailing them for an untold amount of time. I personally had never been followed by a particular Pokemon, but a few Trainers had been briefly followed off and on in the past. I wondered what had drawn Bronzor to Ivy and how long it had been watching her as I moved back several paces, giving Bronzor and Haji plenty of space for their battle.

Ivy commanded her Espeon to kick things off with a Sunny Day, followed by a Fire-typed Hidden Power. Using weather moves like Rain Dance and Sunny Day in caves was always something interesting, as different Pokemon had different ways of inducing their various weathers. In Haji’s case, he focused the energy in his body in preparation of releasing it. I could feel the power radiating from the lavender feline as his eyes started to glow; within moments, a baseball-sized sphere of concentrated red-white light had appeared before Haji. This was basically raw, ultra-condensed Fire energy, which Haji released a second later. The orb shot up into the air and stopped just a few inches shy of the ceiling, where it promptly exploded. It was like a super-powered Flash going off; the orb itself didn’t vanish, but instead remained where it was. Light poured from it, casting an intense illumination that brightened the cavern, as well as the paths leading to and away from it. I winced from the sudden brightness, my eyes watering and stinging. Bronzor, from what I could see, wasn’t expecting the abrupt increase in light either. It recoiled a bit and shuddered in a way that reminded me of someone shaking their head.

While the Steel/Psychic tried to recover from the blinding light Haji had summoned, said Espeon started to focus the latent Fire energy within his body once again. This time, several smaller orbs that weren’t nearly as bright as the first appeared above his head, floating in a lazy circle as they gently pulsed. Once they’d fully formed, Haji released them with a flick of his head. The orbs spun faster for a second before shooting forward, flying through the air in an erratic pattern towards their target.

Bronzor, whether sensing the incoming attack or getting enough of its vision back to clearly see the Hidden Power, suddenly dropped about a foot and moved to the left by about the same distance. This caused most of the orbs to go by and hit the walls or floor, but maybe four of the orbs ended up following the same path that Bronzor had taken and hit the shield-like Pokemon head-on. It flinched back from the heat of the blow; apparently it didn’t have Heatproof as an Ability, or else it wouldn’t have reacted as though the Hidden Power had hurt it at all. Still, it didn’t take long to recover from the blow and prepare an attack of its own. Its eyes started to give off a bright violet glow, which then began to appear around several large stones Haji’s Hidden Power had knocked loose when it hit the wall. These stones soon levitated into the air, lifted by Bronzor’s telekinetic powers, before arching over the Pokemon’s body and raining down towards Haji.

The Espeon was quicker to dodge than Bronzor had been, but Bronzor kept a firm psychic grip on the stones. Wherever Haji went, the rocks followed, tough several of them were knocked off-course by bouncing into the ground. Eventually only a small number was left, but in a moment to decide which way to move next, Haji left a momentary opening for Bronzor’s remaining AncientPower to strike. The stones struck his side with enough force to make him recoil a few steps, but it wasn’t too powerful a blow by any standards. I glanced at Bronzor as the glow in its eyes died away; sometimes, using AncietPower would boost the user’s stats thanks to the concentration needed to use the attack. It didn’t look like Bronzor got the boost, though. It didn’t seem to really care, though, as it started to radiate a bright silvery light from its body that rivaled the intense glow being given off by Haji’s Sunny Day. Once again I raised an arm to block out some of the light, wondering what Bronzor was planning and what Ivy would do to counter it.

Ivy winced as Haji tried to dodge the psychic rocks and failed. He didn't look too hurt, but she hated when her partners took damage.

“I am alright,” he told her silently, hearing the worry in her thoughts. She knew he was a tough battler, but she was still concerned. He had come from a home of violence when they had met, and she wanted to avoid all instances of that if possible. She didn't want a repeat of his unhappiness.

When the Bronzor stopped its attack, it didn't wait long before it started up another one. Adding to the light by Haji's sun, it started to shine silver. Ivy squinted to see through it, holding her arm up to aid her eyes. It looked like a Flash Cannon technique or something similar. That was a specially-powered attack. Then again, it could've been a charge-up for something like Gyro Ball, an attack based on speed that was physically-based.

Which one it was mattered for what she wanted the Espeon to do next. She gave it thought and just decided to go with a hybrid of her plan.

“Haji, we've got to move fast before the Bronzor attacks. Fire off a high-powered Shadow Ball to hopefully stun it for a second. Then, if you get a few seconds, I want you to set up a wall of screens – both Reflect and Light Screen. I'm not sure what move this is.”

She imagined the half circle ring that would hopefully set something of a boundary between the two. More importantly, depending on what attack the Bronzor chose, the screens would help reflect some of the strength of the move back at it and save Haji a little hurt. It wouldn't prevent the technique, but it would help. Hopefully by alternating physical and special screens, Haji would be able to block whatever type of attack it was.

Ivy made sure to envision this in her mind so that Haji could see it. She felt his energy mingling with hers in her head and figured that he'd pull off something similar to what she planned. It was never a perfect match since Haji made judgments as he battled, but at least he wouldn't be clueless.

It was hard to battle this Pokemon since the Steel-type tended to resist most attacks. Even Haji's Shadow Ball wouldn't do that much damage, even if he did put a lot of effort behind it. They had to keep chipping away at it though, otherwise this battle would never end. She could always switch out to another of her partners, but she tried to avoid that when she could because it left the incoming Pokemon susceptible to an attack.

Candle was the obvious favorable match up, but she was really strong too. With the sun behind her attacks, Ivy worried they might knock the wild Pokemon out. Brin was at a disadvantage to it because of Bronzor's Psychic typing. Ivy believe in Haji, though. She knew he could do it.

“Whenever you're ready!” she called. “Let's show this disk our strength.”

Haji wasted no time once he had his new orders. Dropping into a sort of crouch, the Espeon narrowed his eyes and began to focus on the shadows being cast further down the hall. A wisp of smoky maroon energy rose from the Pokemon’s forehead gem and seemed to stretch into a thin tendril; this then shot out towards the darkness. Upon reaching the shadows, the maroon thread took on a darker hue, becoming such a deep blue-purple hue that it nearly appeared black. The tendril then withdrew, as if being reeled back in by Haji. Having absorbed a bit of the essence of the shadows outside the reach of his Sunny Day, Haji concentrated and used his psychic abilities to expand on the essence. This manifested in the form if an inky ball of energy that formed rapidly, within just a second or so. Snarls of darkness twisted away from the main orb, which hissed and crackled softly like a live wire in the distance.

His attack now ready, Haji jerked his head and sent the Shadow Ball flying. Bonzor, whether because it wasn’t paying attention to Haji or simply couldn’t really see him very well over the glare of the Sunny Day, didn’t try to dodge the attack and was struck dead-on. The silvery glow that had surrounded it dimmed some as it recoiled, clearly stunned by the blow, but it managed to hold on to most of the energy it had gathered. It swayed back and forth for a moment while it collected its wits and recovered from the attack, and Haji wasn’t about to let the chance go to waste.

Standing straight, the Espeon’s eyes started to radiate a faint light. His forehead gem, too, took on a slight illumination, and within moment a shimmering wall of sorts appeared before the Pokemon. It was a pale blue-purple and curved in a way that offered protection not just to the front of Haji, but also his sides and back to an extent. Another shield appeared a moment later, this one a pale sort of brown color, and like the first barrier it curved a bit. The Light Screen and Reflect were in place, but it would be tricky for Haji to hold both screens in place and focus on attacking as well. Still, the Espeon seemed capable enough, and Psychic Pokemon were usually capable of handling this sort of thing relatively well.

By now, Bronzor had regained its senses and finished preparing its attack. Now, though, there was another color mixed among the silvery light it was shedding. It was a dark purple, threading its way through the lighter glow radiating from Bronzor’s body. The shield-like Pokemon abruptly started to spin then, faster and faster until it was just a blur of silver and purple. Then, with no warning, it shot forward towards Haji. It struck the screen he’d set up, easily passing through the Light Screen but coming up against an obvious force once it came into contact with the Reflect. Its momentum was cut visibly as the strength of its attack was absorbed and dissipated by the Reflect, and by the time it got through to its target, it was moving at a much slower rate. Still, when it careened into Haji, the Espeon was knocked back a good foot, though he managed to stay on his paws. Bronzor was also tossed back a bit by the impact as the glow around it faded. It blinked its large yellow eyes, clearly a bit dazed from all the spinning as well as the collision; It was also probably affected by the earlier Shadow Ball Haji had used, in conjunction with ramming into the Reflect.

“I think…that thing must have combined a Gyro Ball and a Faint Attack,” I said after a moment. “Bronzor probably decided if Haji could use moves like Shadow Ball, it could retaliate with a Dark-type move. Doesn’t really look like things panned out like it expected, though.”

The Bronzor started to spin until it was just a blur of silver and dark colors, all whirling in a maelstrom of shades that made Ivy's head hurt. She had to look away as the steel disk darted off, barreling straight toward her Pokemon. It crashed through the Light Screen unaffected, but then it slammed into the Reflect screen. Ivy felt the whoosh of wind as it impacted, and the force of it made Haji flinch and skid back on the rough terrain a foot or two.

The woman almost felt the blow physically herself; she had to put a hand up on the moss-covered wall as her brain seemed to lurch right out of her skull. Her head pulsed, and she had to blink a few times to start seeing straight again.

She looked over to her Pokemon and saw that the Bronzor was doing a similar blink. It did look a little dazed. Was she feeling the disk, or was this just some other side effect? Thinking made the headache that was stirring rage.

“I think... that thing must have combined a Gyro Ball and a Faint attack,” Trainer said. “Bronzor probably decided if Haji could use moves like Shadow Ball, it could retaliate with a Dark-type move. Doesn't really look like things panned out like it expected, though.”

Ivy made to shake her head and thought better of it. “Yeah,” she said instead, trying to make her head stop spinning. She didn't really know what was up with his sudden head stuff, but she wanted to try to wrap this up before things got worse. A dark place and a cool wash cloth really sounded good.

“Are you alright?” Haji asked inside her mind, and his cool energy washed over in a soothing manner. At least it didn't hurt to talk like this.

“I should be asking you that,” she responded. “You're the one doing all the work. How are you doing? This battle isn't going as smoothly as I hoped.”

She felt, rather than saw, him evaluate the situation before responding to her. That was Haji. The Espeon rarely panicked or became worried about anything. He was always calm and collected no matter what. She didn't think she had ever seen him lose it before. It would take quite a bit, she thought.

“I am unsure if it is the Bronzor that is making you feel this. It will not speak to me currently. It will stop if it is responsible,” he said, and she knew there was no arguing on that point. He was fairly protective of her at all times, and she thought that maybe it stemmed from her rescuing him when they first met.

Her hand slipped a little on the cave wall, thanks to the moss being a little slick. When she could stand straight again, she wiped her hand on her vest, adding to the other worn patches already there. It probably needed a wash. The moss did give her an idea, though, one that might help them capture the Steel-type better.

“Haji, can you feel the energy in the moss walls?” she asked mentally. Even mind-to-mind, her voice sounded like a whisper. She was afraid any exertion would aggravate her body more.

“Of course. What would you like me to do?”

“This is hazy at best,” she began, not really sure if any of this would work. “You're going to have to let go of the screens directly. They might come in handy later, but I think we should try to capture now, so we can end this. I'm not feeling great,” she said, which was a little bit of an understatement.

Ivy took a moment to organize her thoughts before she spoke again. “I want you to try and use Growth to both increase your own power and influence the plant life on the walls to make them grow as well. I think that will let you use Grass Knot more effectively. Like with what we did with Horsea, I want you to use a web of plants to trap this Bronzor and hold it still.”

She got a flash of memory of feeling energy rumble below her feet as she was standing in water. Then vines lurched up from below, weeding up through the water to wrap around their foe, not only trapping, but draining the Water-type's strength as well. She hoped to repeat that here. It was in Haji's point of view, of course, since it was his memory.

“Yeah, just like that, only this one will probably be in midair. I'm not sure how well it will work. Then, using your enhanced powers from the Growth, fire off a Signal Beam. We need another good hit, and hopefully this will work,” she said.

Ivy had to put her left hand up against the wall again as a wave of dizziness came over her. The sooner they ended this battle, the better. With her right, she managed to unzip a pocket on her canvas vest and pull out a regular Park Ball. She tried to plant her feet in order to get in a good position to throw, but then the room started to spin. She leaned her back up against the wall instead and put her hand up to her forehead.

“Well that wasn't a good idea. I think you're going to have to direct this Haji, if you can,” she said, out loud this time. She had no idea if this capture attempt would work out. She could only hope. They could always try again if it failed.

I glanced at Ivy, worried that she might end up collapsing. She wasn’t looking very stable since Haji was struck by Bronzor’s combined Gyro Ball and Faint Attack, and when she asked Haji to guide a Park Ball for her after giving her commands, her voice didn’t sound anything at all like she was feeling fine and dandy. I shifted my focus to Bronzor, wondering if perhaps there was some sort of empathetic bond forming between them or something. Either way, it was clear Ivy wanted to finish up as fast as possible, and I couldn’t blame her.

Haji allowed his screens to drop and instead closed his eyes, a soft glow pulsing from his forehead gem. It then grew stronger until it spread over his whole body, but it didn’t stop. Snaking branches of the pale blue light rose from the main glow around Haji and reached towards the mossy walls; the moment the energy touched them, it became a deep, striking shade of emerald. The moss then seemed to shift, as if blown by an invisible wind, before abruptly exploding into a frenzy of growth. Instead of vines, it expanded like a teal sponge soaking up great amounts of water. It closed in on Bronzor from both sides, as well as from above, and the squishy flora molded around the Steel Pokemon’s body. It wasn’t fully engulfed, as about a third of its body on the right was still free of the moss, but it was in effect trapped. At least for now.

I pondered what had just happened as Haji’s eyes opened. The move that had caused the moss to reach out for Bronzor was obviously Grass Knot, yet even that couldn’t account for the rapid and extensive reaction the moss had to Haji’s will. Most likely, the Espeon had employed a Growth; the white energy that had taken on the emerald hue would have been him absorbing the plant ability of using the sun as a source of energy. Thanks to the Sunny Day currently in effect, that would have boosted both Growth’s affect as well as Grass Knot’s.

In the time it took me to work out what was going on, Haji was staring at Bronzor with a sharp intensity. I looked over to see Bronzor’s only visible eye had gone completely black. It was a slightly startling sight and somewhat creepy, especially when the blackness seemed to leak from Bronzor’s eye and run down its body. I scowled at the sight and Haji was obviously just as puzzled as I was, as he was simply watching Bronzor with that same hard expression. Then, as if sensing that he needed to act, he lowered his head a bit and tensed the muscles in his shoulders and back, releasing a multi-colored beam of energy that trailed odd squares from the gem embedded in his forehead. The Signal Beam made a loud, reverberating noise not unlike the buzzing of insect wings as it shot towards Bronzor, striking the visible portion of its body.

Just as he released the attack, though, the black leaking from Bronzor’s eye suddenly seemed to peel away from where it had trailed down Bronzor’s body, whipping through the air and lashing Haji along the back. The Espeon made a soft noise as he hastily straightened and backed away, a slight frown creasing his features as Bronzor’s eye slowly returned to its normal yellow hue, the blackness thankfully fading.

“A Psyschock?” I said, mostly talking to myself. “A Special Attack that deals Physical damage…never seen one used like that before, but it’s the only move Bronzor can use that would look that way. Creepy little move, that’s for sure…” I then shook my head and trailed off, noticing Bronzor’s eye was drooping a bit. It was clearly worn out after getting squished by Grass Knot and blasted pretty much right in the eye by Haji’s Signal Beam. Seeing his chance, Haji levitated the Park Ball from his Ranger’s hand and took a moment to calibrate his aim, then used his telekinetic powers to heave the orb. It bounced off the leading edge of Bronzor’s body and popped open, sucking the Pokemon inside before snapping shut and falling to the cave floor. There it wiggled feebly a few times before finally settling, motionless. I waited a moment before going to retrieve the Ball, still a little crept out by that Psyshock. Once I had the Ball, I put it with the others before facing Ivy.

“Done and done. I hope you don’t mind me saying, though, that you look…well, like crud. Do you want to continue your run or would you rather end it now?”

@Dog of Hellsing; I shall claim these four!

    TP#20

Ivy flinched as the strange Psyshock attack ebbed down Haji's fur, shivering herself. Haji brushed it off enough to take the Park Ball from her, however, using his mental prowess to successfully launch it at the steel plate.

The ball sucked up the Bronzor and fell to the floor, shaking just a little bit before going still and locking. Ivy breathed a sigh of relief. It was finally done.

“Done and done,” Trainer said as she echoed her thoughts. “I hope you don't mind me saying, though, that you look... well, like crud. Do you want to continue your run or would you rather end it now?” she asked.

Ivy smiled, forcing herself to stand up straighter. “Yeah, I'm not really feeling my best. Nothing a little sleep shouldn't cure, though. If it's alright, I think we could cut it short here. I caught all four that I'm allowed. Thanks for taking me through here.”

Haji came to sit by her, and Ivy was pleased to see he was only minimally hurt. He leaned against her legs as she relaxed. They had some great new partners to make a home for.

I nodded and pulled a PokeBall from one of my pockets, releasing my Beheeyem Xen from inside. She made a strange series of humming noises, floating about jovially before returning to me and landing lightly on my right shoulder. She was actually quite heavy, though, at nearly eighty pounds, so she only allowed herself to brush against my shoulder, still levitating to keep the bulk of her weight off me. I smiled at the cheerful Pokemon and waved to Ivy and her Espeon.

“Feel up to Teleporting us to the Outpost here so we can get Ivy on her way?” I asked, and the Beheeyem nodded merrily. She raised her arms, encompassing the group of us in a translucent pink bubble. There was then a sort of shifting as she moved the bubble around us Between, that space that exists between realities and dimensions. There was a noticeable drop in pressure as gravity ceased to be, and everything dimmed to near blackness for the barest of moments. Then the bubble popped with a soft [I[pip[/I] noise, and we were standing in the Outpost for the Ruins.

“Right, we’ll go ahead and register your new partners and get the paperwork tended to, then you can get going and get some rest.”
