“Geodude seems interested. What about you?” She asked. Once again I was not interested in it. I just sighed, I had decided I wasn't going to see one today and was going to call it quits after the voice disc ran out, there was no sense in going on. I was just going to have to come back and waste more time here.

"No." I said leaving a Pokedoll on the ground and walking off. "I'll just use up this voice disc and leave, doubt I'll find one today." I continued to let the voice disc play, even though it wasn't making much of a difference now. I walked higher up the mountain looking around for anything else that was interesting. Maybe if I got lucky something worthwhile would come my way, but with the luck I was having, I didn't expect to see much.​

“No,” he said flatly, setting a Pokédoll down in front of it. Ivy flinched. “I'll just use up this voice disk and leave. Doubt I'll find one today.”

The Rhyhorn disk sounded again, and he trudged on ahead. She followed silently, trying not to make his mood worse. Haxbat chattered at her in question, but she shushed the Crobat with a finger to her lips. He just shrugged and flew ahead, over and above them.

The path evened out a little as they scaled the mountain in a semi-platform of sorts. It was littered with gray and brown rocks being coated with ash as it fell. Since the rock face was no longer protecting them from the particles, it was falling faster and heavier. She already had to brush her clothes off and shake her hair to try to remove some of it.

They were about to continue up when Haxbat suddenly flicked his head back towards them and screeched. He flew over to the Ranger and seemed to be focused on something in the rocky field. She peered in the same direction for a moment, but the ash was making it hard to see clearly.

Then, one of the slate gray rocks moved. Eyes appeared, and the plates shifted like a living thing. Then she broke out into a smile as the creature shook itself off and stood up.

She turned towards Axel. “You have no idea how relieved I am right now. I probably don't have to ask, but this Rhyhorn seems like it's up for something.”

I continued walking, looking around the area. I was scanning the field for something I can take home. My luck in finding Rhyhorn was not good so I wasn't planning on seeing one. I saw a Gligar up ahead and was about to go after it when Ivy's Crobat began screeching and pointing in front of him. I followed his gaze towards a pile of rocks. I wasn't sure what he was pointing at until on of the pile of grey rocks began to slide off. A small rhinoceros-like creature with dark slate grey stone plates on his back roared loudly. It began stroking his front left foot on the ground bringing up dirt. When it lowered its head I noticed it had an extremely large horn, which meant it was male.

“You have no idea how relieved I am right now. I probably don't have to ask, but this Rhyhorn seems like it's up for something.” Ivy asked.

"You have no idea how relived I am." I said grinning. I thought about the Pokemon I had brought and who would be the best choice to use here. Shadow would be too powerful for this, and I knew he wouldn't knocked the Rhyhorn out, but I wanted to take the safer route. Cutthroat was powerful, but he didn't have too many moves that were super effective so using him would be ideal. "Alright Cutthroat, you're up." I said, tossing his red and grey Pokeball in front of me.

A red and black Bug Pokemon emerged from the sphere. He was similar in height to me. He eyed the Rhyhorn looking for good places to strike. "Start off with a Swords Dance and go in with Bullet Punch. We'll start off small." Cutthroat nodded as claws began to glow a deep red color. I waited to see what would happen next. If it went well, his claws would grow twice their normal size then he would launch forward, striking at the Rhyhorn in small, multiple jabs all over its body. Bullet Punch was a low powered move, but with Technician and a Swords Dance, it would do a reasonable amount of damage. ​

“You have no idea how relieved I am,” he said, grinning. She smiled, glad to see that he was out of his slump. She wanted every Trainer to have a good time in the Park.

Axel debated on what partner to send out, going over the choices carefully in his mind. Rhyhorn was pretty defensive, so he'd need to pick a Pokémon that was pretty strong but not do too much damage. In the end, he reached into a pocket and tossed out a red and gray Pokéball. “Alright, Cutthroat, you're up.”

The red and black bug Pokémon emerged in a flash of light, eying his opponent to figure out a good place to hit. He was roughly Axel's height, and Ivy was curious about the odd coloring. “Start off with a Swords Dance and go in with Bullet Punch. We'll start off small,” he called to the Scizor, and the bug nodded as his claws started to glow.

He powered himself up as the Rhyhorn watched on carefully, snorting and pawing at the ground with a foot. Then the Scizor lunged, aiming to strike the rhino in quick jabs. He did, and the Rhyhorn cried out, trumpeting a challenge back. As soon as Cutthroat stopped, he lunged forward before the Scizor could retreat, smashing with his horn.

The bug winced a little, but it didn't look like he took much damage. The Rhyhorn then began backing up, pawing at the ground more often than before and tossing his head and horn around. He kinda looked like he was ready to charge, and Ivy paled a little bit, taking a couple more steps back.

Rhyhorn retaliated with a quick thrust of his horn, sending Cutthroat skidding back a few feet. His plates were definitely strong. It seemed as if they could take quite a bit of damage. Well, from Physical attacks anyways. Special Attacks like Psychic, or even Energy Ball wouldn't be protected by his rock plates. I figured if I sparred with him a bit I could quickly tire him out while being able to see what exactly he could do. That is how I usually capture my Pokemon. I battled them for a bit to see what they could do or how they would respond to certain things. It was sort of like a test on the wild Pokemon. In this case, I wanted to see how strong the Rhyhorn's armor protection was against a powerful Pokemon like Cutthroat.

Cutthroat didn't know any status moves, at least not yet anyways. Status moves is what I usually counted on when capturing a Pokemon. However, since I was using Cutthroat, I was going to have to rely on his power to bring the Rhyhorn down to the low health I needed to capture the rock beast. I looked over at the Rhyhorn, trying to examine it. I could tell it was about to charge at us by the way he was moving his head and front foot. I knew he could take more damage, so I could either preform another Bullet Punch, or an extremely powerful move like Superpower. Or better yet, I could just use something mildly strong like Iron Head and see how much damage it does before using Superpower. Using Superpower would lower not only his Attack, but his Defense as well. If I was going to use it, I was going to have to be careful and make sure Cutthroat doesn't use to much power in that move.

"Cutthroat, power up with Iron Defense and use Iron Head." I called out, "Let's see just how strong that armor of his is." Cutthroat nodded in agreement. I could see his body outlined in light baby blue energy. That was the first sign that he was beginning to use Iron Defense. To know that it worked, his body would quickly flash three times in the same baby blue color that he was outlined in. He would also need speed, but I didn't want to have him use too many moves at once, so using Agility was going to have to wait. If anything, before I brought up my speed, I was going to have to bring up my defenses a lot more.

If that worked, Cutthroat would then immediately become surrounded by a white and black aura. Moving at an incredibly fast speed, he would slam into the Rhyhorn. Usually slamming ones body into something at that force would cause some sort of damage to the user, but if Iron Defense pulled through, he wouldn't take much, if any damage. Now taking damage from the Rhyhorn was a different story. I had yet to see how strong this Pokemon really was. I wanted to strike him before he hit us.​

Axel didn't panic at the possible oncoming charge form the Rhyhorn. Instead, he chose to boost his defenses. It looked like they were planning something. “Cutthroat, power up with Iron Defense and use Iron Head,” he called. “Let's see how strong that armor of his is.”

The Scizor glowed a light blue, and then it flashed multiple times over his body. When it faded, the plating looked sturdier and stronger, and it gleamed despite the ash falling from the volcano. Then, he prepared to strike. He shot forward glowing with another type of energy.

Rhyhorn chose this time to charge and the two met somewhere in the middle with a crash that shook the ground they were standing on. The Scizor stumbled back, and the Rhyhorn made tracks in the dirt as it slid in the opposite direction. It looked worse off than Axel's Pokémon, and for that she was glad. One couldn't win battles if you hurt your own partners more than the opponent.

The Rhyhorn shook his head, looking a little off balance from the last attack. He stumbled a little, continuing to shake his head until he got his bearings. Then he looked evenly at his opponent and reared up to stomp on the ground.

Rocks and other bits of debris flew up, some of them bigger than her head. The Rhyhorn then timed it right and hit the descending rocks like a volley ball, sending them flying at the Scizor. He did this one, two, three times before stopping, and then he stepped back, huffing air harshly out of his nose.

The Rocks barreled at Scizor, but he didn't flinch. Instead, he tried dodging after the attack, and he managed to completely miss one and part of another with his quick sidesteps. One, however, caught him on the shoulder, and then the last rock slammed into him, sending him spinning. He righted himself with a shake of his head, but didn't look so worse off. That defense boost had really helped.

"Well, he's pretty strong." I said to Cutthroat, but I don't think he could take a Superpower from you so good thing we didn't use it." He nodded, not taking his eyes off of the wild Rhyhorn. Now what I was going to do was attack it with several more small jabs from Bullet Punch. That worked the first time without fail, but I wasn't so sure it would work again, especially not at close range. I was going to have to use a long range attack, or a quick, hard jab would do the trick.

I was going to use Agility now to bring up his speed. His defense at this point were pretty good so I wasn't too worried about it. He only needed his defense up, not his special defense since Rhyhorn didn't have any special attacks, at least none that I could think of. Even if he did, his special attack wasn't too great so it wouldn't do too much damage to Cutthroat. After I used Agility, I figured instead of having him use Bullet Punch, he could use Brick Break whenever the Rhyhorn came charging at him. I had a feeling it would do a bit of damage to the Rhyhorn. If anything, it would at least bring him in the capture area, but whether or not it would be a capture would be chance at this point.

"Alright Cutthroat, use Agility. Bring up your speed and wait for the Rhyhorn to come charge at you. When it does, I want you to hit him with Brick Break, don't use full power, but use enough to do a good amount of damage to him. When you do, then I'll throw my Hyperball at him. I think we got a good chance if you preform this move correctly." I said. "Don't worry about it, I know you can do it. Cutthroat grinned at me then put on a determined face on as he glared at the Rhyhorn. He then began moving rapidly in a circle, moving so fast that I couldn't keep up with him; all I could see was a red blur. When he slowed down his two claws were glowing white. It was the start of Brick Break. I wasn't sure if Agility worked, but we would soon find out whenever the Rhyhorn came charging at Cutthroat. Using his speed, he would hopefully stop the Rhyhorn in its tracks with a powerful power to either his head or back area.

I pulled out a Hyperball from my bag and Soothing Fragrance Plus. I immediately released the fumes from the fragrance and watched it float into the battle field. As soon as Cutthroat hit the Rhyhorn, I was going to throw my Hyperball and hope for the best. In the mean time, I just waited patiently for the rock beast to make his move. Even if Cutthroat didn't use Agility, he still had a good chance at hitting it and doing a good amount of damage.​

“Well, he's pretty strong,” Axel said, speaking to his Scizor, “but I don't think he could take a Superpower from you. Good thing we didn't use it.” The Trainer was probably right. While the Rhyhorn was pretty tough, it was starting to get worn out, and it was smart of him not to overkill.

After some thinking, Axel asked his Scizor to bring up his speed with Agility and then use Brick Break when the wild Pokémon charged again. It was a good plan. The plated beast looked like it was ready to come at the steel type again, so it was better than chasing after it. They had more time to prepare.

Axel also pulled a Hyperball and a fragrance bottle, so Ivy knew he was going to try to capture the creature soon. He uncorked the bottle, and the scent floated onto the field, hoping to calm the Rhyhorn down a little bit to aid in the capture. He then paused and waited for his Pokémon to move, ready to throw the ball at any time.

Cutthroat started moving in circles, turning into a red and black blur whose form could not be made out. He eventually stopped, but he bobbed back and forth faster, as if antsy, though it was just him operating under higher speeds. His claws then started to glow white, charging up for the Brick Break. The move was said to be able to shatter protective screens that some Pokémon could put up, so Ivy knew it could work in getting past Rhyhorn's thick defenses.

As the Trainer planned, the Rhyhorn stomped his feet and pawed at the ground, letting out a snort as he began to charge at Scizor again. The Scizor prepared himself, ready to move at a moments notice. He waited until the ground type lashed out, then quickly dodged to the side to avoid the blow. Cutthroat brought his claws down right after, smashing the rock beast on the head right behind the horn.

The impact sent it into the ground as it groaned, making a dent in the ground. The blow had sent it off balance and the power behind the strike had stunned it. Axel chose this time to throw the ball, even though the rock beast was struggling to get up. Scizor moved as the ball hit the Rhyhorn, sucking it up in a beam of red light.

It wiggled fiercely. The Rhyhorn was a strong fighter. Then, the resounding ping echoed though the clearing, and the shaking stopped. Ivy breathed a sigh of relief and then smiled. That went a lot smoother than she thought.

She turned to the Trainer. “Congratulations! I'm glad this worked out so well after all that waiting.” She went over to the ball, brushing off the collected ash before putting it in her pocket. “Well, you used a fire repellent already, but is there anything else you're looking for while we're here?”

As I watched the green and blue sphere hit the Rhyhorn and suck it in, I could only hope that my capture would be successful. I had a good feeling about this one, but I couldn't be too sure until I saw it laying motionless on the ground. The ball shook violently on the ground for several moments before finally coming to a rest.

“Congratulations! I'm glad this worked out so well after all that waiting.”

"So am I." I said, sounding both satisfied and relieved. I was really glad I didn't leave the park, otherwise I wouldn't have captured it and would have to come back here again because I heard new Pokemon were coming into the park.

“Well, you used a fire repellent already, but is there anything else you're looking for while we're here?”

"Hmm, I suppose maybe a Gligar or Cubone, hell, maybe even another Rhyhorn, I still got some juice left in this thing." I said, playing the Rhyhorn disc again."​

“Hmm, I suppose maybe a Gligar or Cubone, hell, maybe even another Rhyhorn. I still got some juice left in this thing,” he said. He pressed the start button on the Poképlayer again, and another cry of a Rhyhorn sounded throughout the area as another disk started to play. He must have other people he knows that were looking for the rocky creature too.

They continued up the path to the lip of the volcano. The ash got thicker and fell faster the higher they went, and soon they were standing on the edge looking into the lava pit. It was bright with energy, but Ivy was relieved to see that it still seemed mostly dormant. They had been having enough trouble with the poaching tracks already; they didn't need a natural disaster on top of that.

Then, a shifting movement caught her attention, and her eyes widened as she locked them with a pair of gold ones. What she had mistaken for a patch of lava was actually a Pokémon. Now that she was really paying attention, she could see the ribs along it's head and the dark patterned grooves on its body. Sharp claws dug into the soil around the lava pit.

“Groudon,” she whispered.

The large legend was almost twelve feet tall when standing, but he was laying quietly now, stretched out next to the molten rock. She was hesitant to move, though he looked peaceful enough to just stay put. She didn't want to risk setting off the earth mover. That could set the volcano off.

What worried her was that Groudon was usually not awake. She hoped it didn't mean something was up with the Volcano. She was definitely going to file a report and brainstorm with her other Rangers when they got back to the Main Outpost.

She saw Axel take interest in the creature out of the corner of her eye, and she tensed as the Trainer got a little closer to look. Groudon simply glanced at them and seemed to lose interest though, settling back into the dirt like he was still partly resting.

“So, what do you think, Axel?”

I waited to see if another Rhyhorn would come our way, but nothing. Then I felt the ground shake a bit and thought another Rhyhorn was charging out way, but what I saw was something far more powerful that I would have imagined. Groudon, the Continent Pokemon was coming our way. I quickly brought out my camera and snapped a shot of it before the Groudon managed to sink back into the Earth.

"You know, that Groudon is just what I need to start the eruption of this here volcano." I mumbled quietly. I looked over at the sun and saw that it was setting. "Well, let's call it a day, I'll be back here next week, got something else to find." I said. "Now I gotta go sneak over to Meteor Valley." I mumbled again.

Axel wasted no time in taking a picture of the legend before it settled back to rest. Hopefully it would stay like that for a while. At any rate, she would have to file the report right away.

The Trainer then seemed like he had somewhere else to be, with the announcement that he'd be back next week with something else he needed to find. He did a little mumbling to himself, and she was a little suspicious about it but didn't comment. Instead, she started leading them back down the mountain as the air thinned out from all the heavy ash. They wound down the path and out the gate, and she made sure he had Rhyhorn and his due for the good pictures he took before waving him off from the Outpost. At least the day had ended well and not in disappointment.

Ivy sighed, not wanting to return to the office to the paperwork she knew she'd have. Knowing her luck, Buzzer probably found some way to dump all of his work on her again while she was out. She took her head and headed back to her office anyway, knowing she could just get even later.

I stepped out of the meeting with Boss Sama feeling overwhelmed by the run through the park I was about to take. It involved taking a couple up to Mt Deckbi, which hadn't seen many visitors. While that didn't seem like much, the couple was rather suspicious. When they registered for the run through the park, they wore lots of black leather clothing and were constantly looking over their shoulders. They were so suspicious, the boss himself asked me to keep careful watch over them. My Gliscor hovered above me, just as nervous. He had been in the meeting with me and had heard the entire thing. While we were nervous, we as Rangers had recently received a pay raise and I was obligated to fulfill my duties and lead them through the Park.

I walked out into the main lobby, my Gliscor following close behind, and sat down in a chair. I then began to fidget with my orange-tinted flight goggles while I waited.

Before long, the two arrived at the Docks and entered the building. As they pushed open the office's large double doors, I discovered exactly what my boss had meant when he said: "They must think they're secret agents."

They wore mostly black leather and looked jumpy. They wore standard stuff that most of the spies you read about are wearing. As they checked in with the attendant, I stood up and walked over, my Gliscor following cautiously behind me. Once they finished with routine identity checks, I introduced myself.

"Hey, guys!" I said. "I'm Domonic Stone and I'll be your Ranger for today. If you're ready, we'll head for the jeep out back."

The black helicopter that Ophelia and I were riding in cut through the sky toward a large island on the horizon. Our orders were clear. We were to infiltrate the National Park, an area devoted to catching Pokemon with the help of rangers, to investigate terrorist activity being conducted by Team Magma. According to our mission briefing, they were interested in the large volcano, Mt. Deckbi, on the island where the national park was located. According to various inside-men we had planted within the organization, Team Magma was plotting to cause a major eruption, and divert the lava flow into the ocean to create a landbridge from the island to the mainland. Their grand scheme was meant to create land for Pokemon to live, but they didn't realize that an eruption of this scale would cause most of the Pokemon who resided in the park to die, not to mention the Pokemon living in the surrounding oceans. People like these sickened me. I looked at Ophelia who was staring at the ocean. She was probably going over her mission briefing in her head again. I grabbed a rail and leaned out the side of the chopper. I saw that the Park was pretty close now, and readied my gear. I opened my bag and threw in all my various tools. A small, easily hidden pistol was sitting on the bottom. On top of that there were a few extra clips, just in case. I had also brought a few things that most trainers would bring into the park. Several Hyper Balls and Super Balls were there, just in case I happened to spot a Pokemon I liked while on the trail of Team Magma. I zipped it up and swung it over my shoulder. I was only wearing my Kevlar vest, so I pulled my typical Agency clothing over it. I placed a pair of black aviators over my intense eyes and got ready to land.

Once we were directly above the Park, I was amazed at the scale of the island. It looked a lot bigger in person, and I wondered how we would be able to track down the group we were after. I spotted two giant peaks, one with ice covering the top, the other emitting a smoggy smoke from its top. A giant group of lakes was on one area of the island, and a dark valley littered with black trees was in between the mountains. The helicopter's blades finally slowed, and Ophelia and I stepped onto the grass. Several rangers and trainers looked at us, wondering who allowed us to land a military helicopter on National Park property. I straightened my black and white jacket, made sure my tie wasn't wrinkled, and walked around the chopper to meet Ophelia. She had changed into her normal clothing too.

"I see the Main Outpost up ahead, just through the front gate. Let's go there," I said. She nodded and followed me to the massive gate that was the entrance to the vast Pokemon Reserve. When we weren't on a mission we weren't too different from most married couples, other than the fact either one of us could snap the other's neck without them ever knowing at any given time. However, when we were deployed we were all business. Nothing personal could happen until our duty was fulfilled. We were well-oiled machines, and our functions had to be completed before anything else could happen.

As we headed through the front gate, I signaled for the helicopter pilot to head out. He was to refuel while we trekked across the park, and then come back and hover over the volcano until we were ready to get out. Once we were inside I was once again taken aback by the largeness of the Park. Rolling landscapes extended so far ahead of us that I couldn't tell where it ended. The grass was still wet from the morning dew, and the lengths of my pants were getting soggy. The sun was in its morning glory, and even after it had been filtered through my dark sunglasses I found myself squinting. The temperature was uncomfortable with the clothes I was wearing, I could only imagine what it would be like closer to the volcano. I opened the door to the main outpost and headed to the first available secretary.
"Hello, I'm Agent Rod Johnson, and this is my wife, Ophelia. We're scheduled for a run through the National Park this morning," I said calmly. I was annoyed that we still had to schedule a run like everyone else, despite our mission having priority over other runs. We were here for a reason: to save the Park.

"Oh, very good. I'll pull your information up," said the woman happily. She clicked away on her keyboard for awhile, and finally read back the information we had submitted in our applications. I verified that I was using the same Pokemon that I had signed up, as did Ophelia.

Finally, this sequence ended and she handed us a card. It was similar to a nametag, and had a picture of a Park Ranger on it. His name, age, and other information was listed to the side.

"That'll be your ranger today. I hope you two enjoy yourselves," she said, smiling. It was like she had no idea how much was at stake with this run.

I nodded to her and walked back outside. I turned the card over and saw that it had instructions on it. It said to head to the back of the building to meet our ranger, so I walked around to see a smaller building. Before Ophelia and I could enter it, the face on our card appeared from inside. A Gliscor was hovering just above him, and both of them were looking at us curiously. Their confused expressions were gone soon, though, and he introduced himself.

Hey, guys!" I said. "I'm Domonic Stone and I'll be your Ranger for today. If you're ready, we'll head for the jeep out back."

"Sounds good, Mr. Stone," I said. I wanted to maintain a professional relationship with him. I felt like a ranger was completely unnecessary, since Ophelia and I had received the best training from the Hoenn Military. However, it was a rule we had to conform to if we wanted to carry our mission out.

He led us around back where several open-topped jeeps were parked. All three of us hopped into one and backed out. He gunned it down a dirt path, aimed straight at the ominous volcano that was surely crawling with Team Magma goons by now. I hoped that this young ranger wasn't getting in over his head with this one, and that he had been told we were on a dangerous mission.

 

OOC: My character is way more bitter than I originally imagined. I guess we'll see how that works out. :X


I stared out the window of the helicopter and down at the ocean. The waves looked fairly large today and the sky was gray; there was a storm coming. My ears flicked back a little when I heard Rod, my husband, unzip his bag. I flinched instinctively, though I knew he was just looking for his suit. I had thrown mine on earlier. I didn't want to change in front of the pilot or any of the rangers. There weren't many facilities on Mt. Deckbi, as it was on an island out to sea. That reminded me of our mission. We were to go straight to the base of Mt. Deckbi and began moving upward towards the peak of the mountain, eliminating Team Magma members as we went. At the top, we would confront their head, Maxie. Our instructions were to bring him back alive if possible, but if not, to terminate him and stop their plan to force a volcanic eruption. Nervously, I placed my revolver closer to the outside of my bag, where I could get it if I needed to. I wasn't looking forward to this mission. It was our first since... since the incident. I shook my head, trying to clear the fog that covered my thoughts, but it didn't lift. Rod told me it was okay, that I would start to remember with time. But I missed those memories. I shuddered again, unable to shake the feeling that someone had climbed inside my head and scooped out a good chunk of my brain. At least I remembered my training. I flicked my wrist experimentally, revealing a dagger that was hidden in my sleeve, popping out only when I moved my hand in a certain way. It made me feel safe again.

The helicopter tilted forward and I realized that I had drifted off into my own thoughts. I looked over and saw that Rod was already dressed. When had that happened? Was I blacking out again? I took a deep breath, steadying myself. Everything was going to just be fine. I pulled out the black sunglasses I had been issued and put them on. I felt safer behind the shades. The helicopter finally landed and as we stepped out, many of the local trainers and rangers stared at us, some with curiosity, most with fear. They probably wondered about us. We were real life men in black, seeing more and doing more than they ever would, more than they would ever want to.

"I see the Main Outpost up ahead, just through the front gate. Let's go there," Rod told me. I nodded, keeping quiet, ever watchful and followed him to the main office. As I looked at the people around us, I couldn't help but feel disgust for the soft, pale creatures that lived every day as if life had no more meaning than a soap opera. It troubled me. I was supposed to be protecting them, but I hated them. I shook my head again, never quite able to get rid of the thoughts that had been haunting me for the last year.... Then we were in front of a secretary who looked like she had been in the sun too long. Her hair was bleached blonde, she wore too much make up, and looked like one of those trashy girls that came straight out of the wrong part of Saffron. She leaned forward, towards my husband, and the top of her already low cut shirt slid down a few inches. I bit my lip to stifle a growl. "Hello, I'm Agent Rod Johnson, and this is my wife, Ophelia. We're scheduled for a run through the National Park this morning," Rod told her, and even behind his dark glasses I could see his eyes moving to avoid eye contact. Were we close? I couldn't remember, but I felt like I was feeling the right way. Maybe. The dumb bitch smiled at us.

"Oh, very good. I'll pull your information up," she said, practically giggling. She quickly checked our Pokemon's information to what she had in her database and then handed Rod a card with our ranger's name and picture on it. Poor kid had no idea what he was getting into. "That'll be your ranger today. I hope you two enjoy yourselves," she told us, smiling stupidly.

We walked outside and towards a smaller building, which our ranger came out of, a Gliscor hovering nervously near his shoulder. I blinked involuntarily. He was just a kid about thirteen years old. His picture didn't look THAT young. He attempted a shy looking smile. "Hey, guys!" he said. "I'm Domonic Stone and I'll be your Ranger for today. If you're ready, we'll head for the jeep out back." Did he just call federal officers 'guys'? He was going to end up getting himself killed. Whatever. I wouldn't let it be my problem.

"Sounds good, Mr. Stone," Rod told him, and from the inflection in his voice, I could tell he wasn't pleased with our ranger either.

We climbed into a red and black stripe jeep and as the kid revved the engine, I couldn't help muttering, "Is he even old enough to drive?" I thought I saw my partner grin as we turned down a dirt road.

"Sounds good, Mr. Stone," Rod told me as we walked back to the jeeps. Judging by the sound of his voice and Ophelia's scornful looks, they mistook my lack of height for lack of age. While that did piss me off a little, it was good that they didn't see me as a threat. "Keep them unsuspecting," the boss had said. I guess I was doing that.

"Please," I said as we climbed into the jeep, "Mr Stone is my uncle. He was the guy that ran Devon Corporation, you know. Hey, you guys are from Hoenn. You ever meet him?" I asked as we drove off along the dirt road, my Gliscor flying overhead, keeping a lookout.

They were a rather un-talkative couple, so the ride passed mostly in monologue as I talked about how my cousin Steven gave me a Skarmory and other things. They kept ignoring me and were probably thinking that I was a moron, but that was fine; as long as I could do my investigations without any interference, things would go well. I had managed to convince myself that was true and that the two pistols hidden in my backpack were just for regular safety. Enhanced regular safety that wasn't so regular at all. I tried to push my mind away from the mission that boss Sama had given to me and other such things from my head. We were almost there anyways. We had crossed into Mount Deckbi's shadow and drove further, until we came upon the local Ranger Outpost. Then, I motioned for the two to get out of the jeep so that we could start our long hike up the switchbacks and to the summit of the volcano.

After leaving the jeep in the care of the attendants at the outpost, and dealing with the scornful looks given by the attendants to the so called "Secret Agents" that I was taking along, we began to hike up the side of the mountain. Before long, we came across a fork in the road. One path led into a dark cave and another led to a small, rocky field. The cave was dark and in the field, two of the rocks were rolling around. They were, in fact, Pokemon. Geodude to be exact. They seemed agitated. They rolled and bounced along the slightly slanted field, letting out cries of anger at something. Something suspicious had taken place, probably that lousy Team Magma, but I kept calm and tried to appear completely jovial about it.

"Hey, look!" I said happily. "Two Geodude! If you want to battle them, we can head over to the field. If not, we should probably go into the cave."

IC: Ophelia, the ranger, and myself finally rolled up to the base of the mountain. The large Volcano loomed over us like a giant, pissed off behemoth. Smoke billowed out of its peak, and the air was noticeable hotter here than at the main outpost. The jeep sputtered and finally stopped so we could get out. I pulled my bag out of the back and slung it over my shoulder. The first thing I did upon exiting the vehicle was scan the surroundings for any sign of Team Magma. The mountain was huge. I knew that we would have to stay vigilant if we were going to spot Team Magma and thwart any plans that they might have. I gazed up at the volcano that towered over us. If Team Magma did manage to set off an eruption, even a small one, we would all be dead. I realized that Maxie, the "fearless" leader of Team Magma probably wouldn't be here to witness his master plan take action, it was far too dangerous. If I had a goal in life, it was to end that man's life. He had caused too much trouble for Hoenn, and I wanted to be the one to end his reign of terror.

I looked back at Ophelia and our ranger, who seemed to be waiting on me. He looked around a bit, first at a grey field across the road, and then to a cave that led into the mountain. Suddenly, I heard a strange rumbling noise. It sounded like rock grinding against rock. I traced the sound to the rocky field to our left. I saw a strange movement in the middle of it and tried to figure out what it was. I couldn't tell so I quickly reached down to my ankle and produced a small pistol, aiming it straight at the moving rocks. I hoped it was a Team Magma Grunt in disguise that I could interrogate.

"Hey, look!" he said, cheerily. His happiness made me nervous. He seemed far too naive for a mission like this. "Two Geodude! If you want to battle them, we can head over to the field. If not, we should probably go into the cave."

I put my pistol away. I realized now that it was only a pair of Pokemon. I was a bit jumpy, but you couldn't blame me. A lot was riding on this mission, and nobody involved could fuck up even a little bit. The two Geodude looked distressed. I'm guessing that their home was destroyed or disrupted by Team Magma. I spat on the ground upon thinking their name.

"Let's keep moving, we don't have time for the likes of these Geodude. By the way, if we must, we're prepared to purchase any needed Pokedolls. The Agency has given us a blank check to carry out this mission," I said, motioning toward the cave.

Eventually, our small group reached the foot of Mt. Deckbi. It was easy to see why the ancient people who had lived on this island had worshipped the volcano. The strong smell of sulphur filled the air and there was very little plant life; just a lot of boulders. My eyes were watering from the smoke in the air, and I wiped them before they could start really tearing up. I didn't want to look weak. The jeep pulled to a stop and I jumped out, following Rod. The surrounding area was huge. If Team Magma was around, it would be difficult to find them. Still, it was our job. More than that, something inside of me wanted to take out a few grunts. The idea of seeing their blood pooled on the ground was oddly, sickeningly satisfying. I stood silently next to our ranger as Rod took in the surroundings before looking back at us. Then there was an awful noise, like an old piece of machinery starting. My head turned sharply towards the sound and I saw two of the boulders we had seen getting up and moving around. Almost faster than I could see, Rod whipped a small pistol out from where it had been attached to his ankle and aimed it at the boulders, then realizing they were Pokemon, pointed it away.

"Hey, look!" the ranger said, his voice almost squeaking. I winced. That kid was going to do a lot of growing up in the next few hours, if I was going to get what I wanted. "Two Geodude! If you want to battle them, we can head over to the field. If not, we should probably go into the cave."

Rod spit on the ground and said, ""Let's keep moving, we don't have time for the likes of these Geodude. By the way, if we must, we're prepared to purchase any needed Pokedolls. The Agency has given us a blank check to carry out this mission."

I nodded, as if thinking carefully about what he had said. They both looked at me expectantly. "Er, yes, let's keep moving."

"Looks like we're needed again, 'fisk," I said with a sigh. In the sky a large image flashed brightly to gain our attention. It was in the basic outline of a Stunfisk and it was how we were summoned to ranger someone going through the Park. A familiar beeping noise alerted me of the new text I had. I glanced at the screen and kicked Stunfisk gently with my foot, encouraging him to move. He was gonna be my mode of transport after all. According to the text, we were needed to takeover the duties of another ranger, and continue escorting two well-known trainers through Deckbi for the rest of the day. It'd be a breeze no doubt.

I watched the big brown Pokemon below me give me one of his derpy smiles as he rose. His broad tail swished as he rose up into the air, hovering about three feet above the ground. I climbed up onto the beast's back and bowed my head down to avoid hitting the doorframe of the ranger's outpost we were situated in on our way out. I grabbed onto the two grooves in his back and kicked him in the side lightly, to get him going.

"Yeeeee haaaawwwww!" I shouted, clutching tightly onto the speeding Stunfisk. We shot past craggy ground and into some of the nicer sandy areas, then past some mountains and windy pathways. It wasn't before long that Stunfisk came to an abrupt stalt and I almost fell off. I was about to scold him but I noticed two trainers up ahead facing two smallish boulder-like Pokemon.

"Let's keep moving, we don't have time for the likes of these Geodude. By the way, if we must, we're prepared to purchase any needed Pokedolls. The Agency has given us a blank check to carry out this mission," the male said. He seemed to shift a little uncomfortably as though he had just sensed my presence. The word 'suspicion' caught my attention and I was going to have to keep an eye on them. Poachers were not unheard of here.

"Er, yes, let's keep moving," the female said. She tilted her head towards one of the caves that was barely visible along one of the steeper mountains.

"Fiiisssssk," Stunfisk said very nonchalantly.

The trainers looked back at me as I gave them a brief wave. After exchanging salutations, we began to walk away from the two boulder Pokemon. But, no more than ten seconds later, I noticed they had hopped along after us. The trainers handed me a sum of 500 a piece and I tossed two standard Cleffa pokedolls at the Geodude. They looked chuffed and began beating each other over the head with them. We made forth and into the inky black caves.

"Anyone have a light?"

As we walked away from the two boulder Pokemon, an odd sight caught my eye. Another Ranger, who was riding on a Stunfisk of all things, was gliding toward us. He stopped, waved at us, and exchanged a few words with our Ranger. After a few seconds of talking, our ranger left and the new one walked toward us. We continued walking away from the two Geodude, but as we walked we could still hear them tumbling along behind us.

Without speaking, I handed him a few bills. He pocketed them and dropped a couple of Cleffa-shaped Pokedolls on the ground. They distracted the Geodude long enough for us to make our escape.

We continued until we reached the entrance to the elaborate network of caves. I looked down the passageway, but could see nothing but pure blackness. We stopped outside and peered in, not knowing if we wanted to go inside yet.

"Anyone have a light?" asked our ranger. I nodded and stepped up to the front of the group. I pulled a Pokeball out of my bag and tossed it to the ground. My Starmie popped out, spinning around swiftly.

"Starmie, cast a weak Signal Beam out to light up the path," I commanded. Starmie's jewel began to glow brightly, and suddenly a beam of light shot out of it.
