    With a loud whirring, buzzing noise that sends a storm of echoes up and down the tunnel, Vibrava takes to the air again to avoid a prison of rocks that lurches forth from the walls. Its dazed, erratic aerial flutterings just barely carry it out of the way of ice-laden fist, and the wild Pokémon soon loses control of its trajectory and crashes to the rock floor with a sound of crinkling wings. With flight muscles tired from overexertion and wings in serious need of time to recover from the landing, it doesn't look like Vibrava is in any shape to go airborne again.

    Invictus turns forty-five degrees to face Vibrava's new location, ready to continue the fight: the Aggron is still in top form, and her will to battle— not to mention her quietly soaring spirits at K'sariya's complete trust in her— remains as intense as ever.

    It's at that moment that, with the echoes of Vibrava's flight fading away, a very faint rumbling sound can be heard from up ahead in the tunnels. Is it quiet, or just distant? It's too early to tell which, but all of the battlers are keenly aware that something is coming this way.

    Invictus barrels forward like a train but ice-caked fist misses its mark. Clenched claws smash into the rock and shatter the ice into dangerous shards at her feet. She clears them with her tail as she whirls after the Vibrava, who teeters away in its confusion. She gives a frustrated huff but that's when the lightened Pokemon feels the tremors that quiver ever-so-softly at her feet.

    The Aggron freezes and stiffens. Glaring blue eyes shoot down into the unknown darkness of the seemingly endless tunnel. Abyssal pupils snap to the Vibrava, who has careened to the earth, then back to the shadows. Wary senses split between the two, trying to assess which one would be more of a threat. Preemptively, she charges another Ice Punch. Cold creeps up her fist once more. Invictus steps toward K'sariya, giving her a gentle bump and nodding to where the tiny sound could be heard.

    Dark-skinned femme notices the way it slowly begins to crescendo, rippling toward them through echoes that seem to get closer and closer. She becomes disturbingly aware of where they are once more, of the fragility of the cave that they're in. While she knew that the Aggron could protect her as she had before, K'sariya was privately worried about the remaining... shell of Tella. Would Wrath be able to protect her to the same way Invictus could K'sariya? Would the Substitute even try to preserve her with her powers if not? She slowly grows more and more aware of the tremendous energy flowing within the Ranger but still does not trust this strange surrogate. The woman remembers the harsh hit that her closest companion had taken earlier on top of it all and that is enough to sway her.

    She reaches for her ball and Invictus notices the movement. Eyes narrow and jaws fall open with discomfort. Rumble of concern peels from metallic form. K'sariya shakes he head. "Didn't do anything wrong," she reassures, "Trust me." Blue eyes soften a bit as the words cleanse the creature's worries. Horned head nods before she's sucked into her shielded haven by a flash.

    Another form soon replaces rocky bulk, one much wider. The Venusaur materializes with the sound of shifting leaves as closed bud unfurls open during the creature's entering stretch. Emerald fronds fall open, rafflesia-like flower flopping into bloom. Low groan echoes from Alixra as she's released for the first time in a while. She's a bit grumpy that it's not in the sun and instead in some stuffy cave, but the stress she senses from her Trainer draws her attention to more important thing.

    K'sariya shuffles closer to the walls. "Hold everything up, just in case," she instructs, voice eerily quiet and flat, eyes never leaving the darkness. "And keep an eye on that Vibrava." Wide head gives a nod and then several thick vines creep from beneath its shade, stretching up along the wall they are near and upwards to support the ceiling. K'sariya isn't sure of the size of whatever it is is coming for them, yet, but she'd rather be safe than sorry.

    With Alixra out and standing ready (prepared to hold up the very ceiling should such be necessary,) a brief few moments of relative quiet pass by, with no sound but the distant rumbling growing ever so slightly louder in the distance.

    But Vibrava, still confused and still clearly disgruntled at being stymied in its food-theiving, isn't done yet. With a hiss, the small earth dragon draws on its mysterious power over stone, sending a quivering tremor through the rocky floor of the tunnel. The tremors stretch to cover the ground between Vibrava and Alixra... and then the stone explodes upward, striking the Venusaur and filling the air with gravel, dust, and powdered rock!

    Alixra lets out a grumbling roar of displeasure, but the calm Venusaur doesn't let herself become distracted from the task K'sariya has set her. As the dust clears and the last few small pieces of gravel clatter to the ground, K'sariya and her Pokémon can see that Vibrava's attack was a final act of defiance: disoriented, injured, and slowed by Substitute's strange power and Invictus's relentless chasing, the Pokémon has had enough. There is now no sign of Vibrava; the debris thrown up by the Earth Power were a ruse, designed to give the mistrustful, injured and slowed wild Pokémon time to flee!

    Encounter Over!
    [IMG]
    Vibrava: 93.75% [SPE-1] [CON-1] (Used Earth Power; fled!)
    Alixra: 90.10% (Tried to end the battle; was denied)

    And then, walking towards the two through the settling debris comes Substitute, apparently unconcerned by the uneven footing left behind by Vibrava's last attack.

    Alixra's eyes turn to regard this new and unfamiliar person; almost immediately, normally even-tempered Venusaur begins to stomp her thick limbs nervously, and shoves herself protectively in between K'sariya and this raw strangeness in human form. Vines extend from beneath giant flower, lingering in the air and ready to strike should Substitute draw any closer: every instinct Alixra possesses is certain that here is someone dangerous, and what's more, that something is severely wrong.

    Substitute stops a safe distance away rather than test Alixra's patience. In Tella's voice, completely without interest or inflection, it calls: "Since the purpose Tella has left me is to keep you safe, I find it necessary to suggest that we exit this tunnel within the next three minutes. Yon distant sound is the approach of a horde of Boldore. Tella's knowledge of them is that they travel large tunnels like this one at high speed during the mating season. Their passage collapses smaller tunnels. It shakes rocks from the ceiling. And it causes other Pokémon to flee in panic. Their hundreds of trampling feet constitute a force that few living beings could withstand. To still be here when the horde arrives would be more deadly than to be caught in a stampede of Tauros."

    Sure enough, the rumbling is growing louder, closer, and only now can all those present identify the individual grating, scraping noises of rock on rock hidden within the all-consuming sound. K'sariya would be left with a few options: to run back the way she'd come (likely a fool's errand given the speed at which the sound seemed to be approaching) ; or to try to get far enough up one of the smaller, human-sized side tunnels that the tremor from the approaching cataclysm wouldn't cause it to collapse on her and Substitute/Tella's heads; or to dash straight toward the sound, and hope that an intersection or large side tunnel capable of withstanding the artifical earthquake would present itself.

    Puff of thick, powdered rock and stone slashes across leafy flesh. Alixra gives a groan, withdrawing at the strike. Great feet stomp once as it recovers and prepares to strike back, only to see that her opponent has disappeared. Wide maw gives a frown of disappointment, but quickly attention turns to the humanoid figure that mechanically emerges from the rubble.

    Instantly, the calm Pokemon finds herself uneasy. Low rumble of discontent thrums deeply from her huge mass. Additional vines snake out from beneath expansive blooms. They curl in the air, poised like cobras ready to strike. A stray cord pulls K'sariya protectively close. The dark-skinned woman leans lightly into the touch, finding that the comfort of another one of her Pokemon is something she needs right now. Relaxed lean disappears, however, as the rigid voice of the Substitute begins to jar its way from familiar features. Hair races to attention across her arms all over again. Shift in her mood causes Alixra's hovering growl to deepen dangerously.

    The Trainer processes the information, biting her lip as she tries to think. She can almost hear the seconds as they count down in her head. Hand snaps to the expanded ball. She gives her Venusaur a reassuring pat before withdrawing her. Against her previous better judgement, she taps the button on the worn ball at her waist. Invictus gives a grunt of confusion as she blinks back into existence right when she'd started to get comfortable. Blue-eyed gaze turns, puzzled, to her.

    "No time," K'sariya says hurriedly. Hand swings out to plant palm against the stone wall of the tunnel. "We need to dig out a space for everyone. Quickly." Invictus' ancestors were diggers, ones that burrowed deep into bedrock for iron deposits to feast on. Steel horns pierced even the most solid of materials with nearly the same ease as they plowed through flesh. In recent months, the Aggron had gotten practice that the egg-raised creature never had before: the construction site. When digging to create basement levels, Invictus had started to catch up to even the Excadrill in skill. Now, the Aggron calls upon that natural instinct once more--this time, to save their lives.

    Great shoulders roll as metal flash sweeps over plated body, toughening her hide with an Iron Defense to better gore through the stone. Bright white light that overtakes her claws casts deep shadows in the quivering cave, battling with the piercing red of the Substitute's headlamp. She uses the Metal Claw to aid her as she begins with a firm slash through the wall. It crackles and falls easily beneath her. Deep breath harrumphs from great body before she throws herself into her work, into saving them. Sound of steel bashing against rock rings out like a cacophony of a dozen pickaxes as she begins to dig a room large enough for herself, K'sariya, and the strange being that has possessed Tella's form. The Trainer keeps an eye out, giving occasional small reassurances. If unhindered, it's likely the process will only take two or so minutes, leaving them time to spare to tuck themselves away should all go as planned...

    Invictus slams into the wall: steel hardened by the Aggron's mysterious power cuts deep furrows into the rock; gouged from the side of the tunnel, curved stones with irregular, jagged edges fly back into the pathway outside to be strewn across the ground like caltrops. The shards of dense stone tremble and begin to dance, occasionally leaping short distances into the air in sympathy with the vibrations from the approaching horde, which grow steadily louder...

    Invictus knows that her actions mean life or death for K'sariya, and her desperation on behalf of her Trainer is well suited to her natural bravery. A cave takes shape in just over two minutes: a cave that is small in the grand scheme of things... but which is, most importantly, large enough to fit all four: Tella's body with its temporary control system; her beleaguered-looking Poliwrath, Rath; K'sariya; and ever-faithful, protective Invictus, who nevertheless can't stifle a rumble of displeasure at the feeling of wrongness that trails behind Substitute when it walks past and deposits Tella safely at the back of the cave.

    Once Rath and K'sariya are inside too, Invictus— the glow of the Iron Defense across her hide fading as its power gives out— ducks in as well, filling up nearly all of the remaining space, and sets herself at the cave's entrance as a guard, ready to repulse any of the stampeding Boldore that might try to gain entry. The cacophony of echoing boulder-like footsteps and dancing rocks outside is deafening, now, and the Boldore herd can't be more than thirty seconds away...

    Abruptly, Invictus jerks one claw out, like a goaltender grasping for an unexpected shot at her net. Despite her readiness, Invictus isn't able to block the small figure that leaps into the cave and crashes into the far wall, narrowly missing Tella's head. Substitute turns Tella's dead-eyed grey gaze to regard the trembling form of a Sandshrew, which is backed up against the wall across the tiny cave from it, claws aggressively raised: it seems to have ducked in here at the last moment, desperately fleeing the stampede. The little creature's beady black eyes are bugging out with fear; its response to fleeing to apparent safety, only to find itself surrounded by large Pokémon— potential predators— is that of any small and cornered creature.

    "Ssssssssssssaaaaaaaaaaand!!" the shrew-like Pokémon hisses, preparing to launch itself at Substitute in desperation. Nigh instantly, Rath interposes himself between the two, balling heavy fists and prepared to defend whatever's left of his beloved Trainer to the last; but in this small cave, a fight between these two will no doubt fill too much of the available space with sand, water, or a mixture of the two, forcing everyone out into the path of the stampeding Boldore! K'sariya will need to think quickly to end this fight before it begins, or otherwise prevent a catastrophe.

    (( escape attempt!! ))

    They pack in nearly like sardines, a mix of hard and soft bodies pressed against one another between the chasm in the rocks. Invictus tucks herself into the entrance, serving as a solid physical barrier between the incoming Boldore and her Trainer. Invictus wants to ensure that nothing gets past her so she pulls her tail in and perches just inside the entrance, blocking both entry and escape as long as she wills it.

    However, she doesn't prepare for something smaller than a large, rampaging bolder creature. The tiny yellow ball streaks past her leg and she gives a metallic cry of displeasure. Arm slashes downward, trying to block it from entering, but it is too quick for her unprepared reaction. Small Sandshrew clatters against the stone wall, the impact knocking it from its furled state. It crouches, hissing, as it realizes that it's gone straight out of the frying pan and into the freezer.

    It's aggressive right off the bat, as Invictus imagines it would be when it finds itself surrounded by more creatures than it'd ever begun to bargain for. Rath puts himself between the empty shell of Tella and the attacker. Tension riddles his body. The Aggron, too, finds her muscles bunching as she sees the Poliwhirl move to protect. A torrent of water would wash them out of the cave, and if it wasn't enough to push them into the oncoming Boldore, it'd definitely be enough to weaken their refuge so that it came crashing down on their heads. The steel titan gives a short grunt at Rath, trying to ward him off of the endeavor.

    K'sariya thinks quickly, ticking down Invictus' arsenal in her head as soon as her shock of seeing the Ground type burst into the cave clears. By the time Invictus is trying to deter Rath from striking up a fight, she has an idea. "Try to Rock Tomb around it to block it off," she suggests, quickly and quietly as not to startle the creature. Hopefully, sectioning themselves off would bring the Sandshrew comfort by giving it protection from both the Boldore and the crew it found itself trapped with for long enough to let the stampede pass and the Trainers escape.

    Invictus nods in understanding. Foot shifts against the earth as she commands the rock around the Sandshrew to rise. Boulders jut suddenly a few inches in front of it, thrusting up in side-by-side pillars of stone that seek to jut all the way to the ceiling of their small cavern. She doesn't try to hit the Sandshrew with the stone, as hurting it would only scare it more--instead, she just tries to harmlessly block it off for now.

    Main RP — K'sariya Yeboah — Non-Battle Post #5

    A prison of stone erupts from around the wild Sandshrew, caging the little Pokémon into its own space within the tiny cave. Rath is forced to step abruptly backward to avoid the thick, heavy stones— Invictus wasn't able to make them thin and strong— and the amount of empty space available in the cave goes from minimal to nonexistent. K'sariya is pressed up against Invictus by the new obstruction; meanwhile, Rath's body and Tella's body are pinned to the cave's wall by the stone fence that now extends from floor to ceiling in Sandshrew's corner. The terrified little creature, barely visible amidst the red light from Tella's shoulder that shines through the heavy stone bars, skitters to the farthest corner of its rocky prison and huddles there, apparently content to cower rather than fight as long as none of the others make any move in its direction.

    K'sariya's smart solution comes just in time; the rumble from before has already become an almighty thundering that batters the ears. The Boldore have begun to pass by, knocking against each other and against the walls in a clattering din of stone against stone that shakes every surface, sending a tiny spiderwebbing of cracks through floor and walls and ceiling alike. The din is brutally loud: Rath squeezes his auricular ducts closed in pain, and K'sariya must cover her ears or else quickly start to lose her hearing. Invictus is not bothered by loud noises; but she feels the raw power of the Boldore against her back, almost like a force of nature: a landslide of living rock that pummels her relentlessly but without any driving motivation, no room for the inkling that she is anything more than an obstacle. The Aggron is up to this challenge, though: her rocky hide— reinforced with the natural steel that grows out from her bones and spreads across her like a second armoured skin— has withstood worse.

    She settles into her role as one more part of the wall against which the Boldore stampede is dashing itself; and time begins to pass.

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    It has been a long time. Perhaps only fifty or sixty minutes; maybe longer than two hours. Invictus has nearly fallen asleep; the battering pressure of the Boldore herd against her back has lulled her almost like a vigorous— and lengthy— massage... but even sleep would not have stopped the brave sentinel from protecting her cherished K'sariya: Invictus is wedged solidly into place, her rigid rock body keeping the little cave's ceiling up in much the same way that she's keeping the horde of Rock-type Pokémon out.
    Rath continues to vibrate anxiously, eyes still flickering between the wild Sandshrew— which seems to have calmed and gone still, though its beady eyes still watch the other inhabitants of the cave mistrustfully— and the shell of his beloved Trainer, Tella, a shell which looks back at him with deadened grey eyes and sardonically quirked lips, as though Substitute is amused by the Poliwrath's distressed glances and the worried Pokémon's attempts to look elsewhere.
    Slowly, it becomes clear that the din is subsiding. What was previously an echoing, brutally loud drumroll of stone smashing hard against stone is now receding into a borderline bearable quaking in the walls and floor, like the tail end of an earthquake. Soon, even the distant noise of the stampede has receded to what sounds— in comparison, to ears dulled by too much noise for too long— like utter silence.
    "Well." Substitute comments in a monotone, with the distinct sound of amusement— and not a nice kind of amusement, more like the sound of someone enjoying another's discomfort— hovering somewhere underneath the matter-of-fact sound of the words despite the lack of any inflection. "The danger has passed. What will you do now, I wonder, K'sariya. Or rather, what questions do you have for me. I can see your curiosity written plain as day upon your scarred, scared face, you know. No one uncurious survives the world's darkest places with her sanity and her humanity intact. And you are sane, if only barely."
    As it speaks, Substitute straightens Tella's limp body into a standing position— still trapped against the side of the cave by the stone cage— from where it's been keeping her leaning on the wall. "So." The background of its monotone voice evokes smugness, almost triumph, but again in a way that can't be pinpointed in its tone of voice. "What is it that draws your glances to me and to Rath so often, K'sariya. What glimmers of hope keep you from descending into yourself and shutting out everything when there is nothing to do but wait and think. What burning questions keep you here, unlike so many who have given up on the world. Unlike so many who have given up on themselves. Ask them, girl. Ask!"
    For a moment, the dead grey eyes in Tella's face, staring straight into K'sariya's amidst the reddish light of the LED, flare purple with a fire of... not desperation, but something like desperation. Something like need, or intense yearning, or maybe just single-minded obsession.
    At this point, K'sariya is prepared for things to go terribly wrong. She almost expects the Sandshrew to rush above the stones as they rocket up to the ceiling, imagining the brutal pulverization of rocky shell as the rocks rupture upward. But fortunately, things work as planned, and she can't help but thank whatever entity it is she's never bothered believing in. Rath steps back, pushing them all together to truly pack them into the cave like sardines, and she doesn't even mind, too occupied with the relief of a plan actually working in this chaos of a run to bother her personal space being actively violated.
    However, she starts to mind as the sound of the stampeding Boldore begins to overwhelm her ear drums. She fights to free her hands from her sides, managing to clamp them firmly over her ears before the roar can pierce her senses too deeply. Eyes shut instinctively, also, and it's a good thing--the sight of spiderweb cracks rippling across the walls around her would have made her anxious. Head leans over onto Invictus. The sharp cold of the steel against her forehead helps soothe her as they begin to wait out the din.
    Time grows hazy as it carries them along its current. Exhausted by the stress, K'sariya dozes, the thunder of the Boldore fading into the background as the vibration numbs her body, puts her limbs to sleep. It is a much-needed nap, even if it is a fitful one. There are periods where she stirs, looks to the Sandslash to the Substitute, to Rath and to Invictus, and then stews in her own thoughts for a few minutes before dozing back off. It's the silence that inevitably and finally wakes her; its sharp clarity cuts through her unconsciousness and she snaps back into the reality of their situation, jumping against the rock.
    Eyes turn back to their fateful, disturbing companion. Eyes prove stormy, cold, as they regard this mockery of Tella with both mild curiosity and still-lingering distrust. The Substitute had guided them out of danger time and time again, but it was nigh-impossible to shake the natural, unsettling vibe the inhuman creature exuded.
    Cast in the ominous red glare, K'sariya stares at the Substitute, listens as it begins to speak. Mention of her scars causes the contours of her lips to harden into a thin-lipped line. Analytical musings begin to take on a more aggressive tone as the querying continues. The shift in tone causes Invictus to give a harsh rumble of warning. She thuds backward as she unlocks herself from the opening of the cave.
    K'sariya steps gladly back after her companion, desperately needing a stretch and the space and the presence of mind to answer the questions. And so she extracts herself briefly from the situation, turning to Invictus to take a deep breath. Not seeing the thing that has inhabited the shell of her Ranger helps calm herself. Arms fold tightly against her chest, though with a crossness, not insecurity.
    After only a moment, she turns back to face the light of the crimson LED that washes about her form. She notices the violet that has flared in steel-hued eyes. Invictus' singular growl has grown into a constant rumble behind them, a low din echoing as a consistent backdrop to their encounter.
    "If you insist." Voice is quiet, cold, her own heat exuding from beneath the ice of her tone but not quite enough to melt it fully. "What is it that she hides? That you hide for her?" When the going gets tough for everyone else in the universe, they don't just get to hide away and let some other entity habituate their shell and go to work for them--K'sariya included. Through nearly losing her life, through losing her job and her home and every material possession she'd once taken for granted, K'sariya wasn't the kind to withdraw into herself and hide when the going got tough. Life had forced her to develop coping mechanisms for these things that it kept throwing at her, and even though she still wasn't great at using them, it got her through.
    Main RP — K'sariya Yeboah — Non-Battle Post #6
    A pause, during which Tella's body stands stiffly where it's trapped against the cave wall. "A simple question upon its face. A difficult one if I should answer it in depth. Wilt thou understand mine response, I wonder." Tella's features remain motionless, and barely visible in the flood of light from the LED on her shoulder, but Substitute's eerily glittering purple eyes cut through the red: they don't break contact with K'sariya's dark orbs as Substitute speaks to her in that monotone shadow of Tella's voice. "I shall answer fully, as I desire a challenge."
    Substitute waves one of Tella's hands, and one wall of the dug-out cave lights up with a swirl of silver and purple pinprick lights that arrange into a purple caricature of Tella's silhouette against a silver backdrop, almost like a cross between a movie screen and a fantasy-novel portal.
    "The simple answer is that Tella hideth her weakness and humanity. I exist to aid in this. The longer explanation for mine existence is less simplistic than that."
    The caricature on the wall, moving like an animated film in purple and silver, rotates and zooms out, showing Tella standing with arms held out from her body in a T shape. A red light appears shining in the centre of her chest, in the vague shape of an anatomically correct heart; simultaneously, a green light shaped like a stylized brain fills the purple outline of her head and begins to swirl with spots of blue and red that appear and disappear like fleeting thoughts.
    "Tella tolerateth sadness and pain and helplessness in others. Even when those emotions cause mere humans to let her down. But she escheweth them in herself." Tella's red heart in the image on the wall wavers and begins to turn blue. "The girl believeth that her gifts and the trials which she hath survived leave her no right to let others down. Thus she hath developed a means of coping: a number of times in her life, Tella has been overcome by such debilitating emotions. Her ability to function doth suffer. So Tella draweth upon every other aspect of herself that she keepeth hidden. She createth with them a mask to wear. Thereby she can cover and suppress her weakness. Or so she believeth."
    On the wall of Invictus's cave, blackness wells up from inside the purple silhouette of Tella; it covers the blue heart in the centre and spreads to fill the entire silhouette except the head. "In one not gifted as Tella is, such a coping mechanism would recede with time. I am not so easily vanquished." Substitute's use of Tella's voice is still monotone, but a certain element of bitterness lurks beneath it, hidden in that impossible-to-pin-down way that Substitute seems to express emotions.
    "So to answer thy question, K'sariya. What do I hide. I hide the truth." On the wall, tiny black tendrils creep into the outer edges of the brain-shape and seek out the blue dots that appear and disappear throughout; they begin to attack them, filling in the spaces where blue appears and replacing them with black. But the blue won't be silenced; even more of it appears, peppering Tella's mind.
    "I hide that Tella is no less weak and emotional and human than the rest of thy ridiculous race. I hide this truth from Tella because Tella created me to do so. I am everything that Tella keepeth deeply hidden. Self-absorption. Superiority. Pretense. Cold calculation. Disillusionment with humanity. Everything Tella hateth about herself except for the very humanity I exist to hide. This is why the Pokémon fear me: I should never have existed."
    In the silhouette, the blue dots of 'thought' are popping up with even greater frequency, and vanishing more slowly from amidst the green. The black reacts, oozing to cover every spot that is blue, and leaving darkness behind. Like a creeping invasion, the blackness begins to encroach inward, hunting down and covering the blue wherever it's encountered. It spreads more and more quickly as it grows to cover the last light in the entire silhouette...
    "Tella's flight from herself doth create me. I serve her by keeping her strong and capable at all times, even when she herself is weak. Her gift, which she believes she understands but whose source she and I alike do not know, doth feed me the power I need to hunt down and smother the humanity within. Each time I am invoked, the humanity inside the girl doth grow weaker, for the end result of burying an emotion for long enough is to cease to possess it. And because I am created to hide from Tella her own weakness, I must hide this, too, from her. It is my nature."
    The glowing image disappears from the cave wall in the seconds before the depiction's black tendrils snuff out the last glow of Tella's psyche.
    "Such is the curse of recklessly using a poorly understood gift to alter oneself. Even with the best of intentions." A wry smile quirks Tella's lips, but the half-perceived undertone beneath Substitute's monotone evokes bitterness. "She hath more power than she knows, and in sixteen years of training has learned only some of its uses. Were she to truly cast aside her humanity, she would wield might beyond even my capabilities. Should I succeed in my purpose of eliminating her weakness and her humanity alike, I instead shall wield that strength, and those parts of Tella that are not me will cease to exist."
    Substitute contorts Tella's hand in a strange twisting gesture, and reality warps sickeningly as Tella's body teleports out of where she was trapped between the rock cage and the cave wall. Substitute woodenly brushes some stone dust off of the front of Tella's no-nonsense travel gear. Throughout it all, the thing's purple-gleaming eyes never break contact with K'sariya's.
    "And now thou knowest that Tella is destroying herself to protect those around her. And that she knoweth not what she does. The time when my grip is broken approaches, Invictus. K'sariya. But I will exist hidden within Tella forever until the girl no longer believes that she needs me. The next time I emerge, she may cease to exist entirely."
    K'sariya and Invictus might find themselves growing aware that the aura of utter strangeness around Substitute has been growing steadily stronger this entire time. The Sandshrew in its cage of stone is panicking, scratching futilely at the rocky bars opposite Substitute in a desperate bid to escape.
    "It seems unlikely to me that the two of you will succeed in convincing Tella that she must be weak or else perish. Unless you are capable of more subtlety than I have come to expect from humanity and its domesticated pets. Canst thou destroy me, I wonder. I would like to find out. I have little faith in your race, K'sariya, mostly because I am made from Tella's misanthropy and latent narcissism. I tell you all this only because logic states that a non-zero chance of her survival is better than none. Good luck, K'sariya. ...Invictus."
    Substitute's purple gaze shifts to the Aggron briefly, and then it closes Tella's eyes. Then...
    "...I'm sorry to have ducked out at such an inconvenient time." Tella speaks again, and this time her voice bears the human inflections of a deliberately businesslike attitude, with a wavering undercurrent of trepidation beneath. "I needed some time to... to get a hold of myself. I hope the Substitute took proper care of you? It's... an efficient construct, if a bit robotic."
