Voltaire looked over at the Marill, taking a moment to think before preparing his response. “Hmm, I am not really interested in those. Let me call the Marill away. If not, I have a Poke Doll here and I could use it,” he said, approaching the rotund Water-type.

The Aqua Mouse Pokemon, despite being much smaller than the young Trainer, didn't even flinch as the human moved towards it. Instead, it closed the distance and latched on to Voltaire's leg in a hug.

“Hey there, little fella. We were not here for you, but I'm sure you can find another sometime,” Voltaire said in a friendly tone to the Marill, bending down to pat the Water-type on the head.

In response, Marill gave a sharp cry in protest and buried its face, giving the leg it was currently attached to a firmer grip. Despite being obviously friendly, it was clear to everyone present that it did not want the newcomers to leave.

“You'll have to use the Doll this time, unfortunately,” Makina advised, seeing that Marill now had a death grip on the limb. The Pokemon wasn't strong enough to do any real damage, but they couldn't stay in this situation forever. Accepting the Pokedoll from Voltaire, Makina gently tapped the Water-type with the toy to get its attention before setting the toy on the ground.

Almost immediately, Marill detached itself from Voltaire and snagged the doll. Even though the plush Jigglypuff was almost as round as the Pokemon currently hugging it, the toy managed to prevent itself from rolling away into the water. With Marill successfully distracted, the two humans settled themselves into one of the nearby boats.

<I'll be back at the outpost if you need me,> Aria said, watching her partner before Teleporting away. The Gardevoir wasn't a large fan of water, and the boats were really only large enough to seat two humans and a medium-sized Pokemon. While there were larger boats further in the Park, this lake was not nearly as massive enough to warrant the vessels.

As Makina began to untie the boat from the dock, she went over a few guidelines with the Trainer. “We have a few choices here. If I remember correctly, this is a fairly deep lake so there are bound to be stronger Pokemon the further towards the middle we go. Would you rather patrol the outer ring of the lake, or head straight towards the middle and see what happens?”

As the boat finally floated freely on the water, a spiked aquatic Pokemon rose the upper part of its body from the lake and rolled about. The creature was dark green in coloration, though it belly was pale yellow.

“That is one lazy Qwilfish,” Makina remarked, watching the Pokemon slowly roll about in the water.

“We have a few choices here. If I remember correctly, this is a fairly deep lake so there are bound to be stronger Pokemon the further towards the middle we go. Would you rather patrol the outer ring of the lake, or head straight towards the middle and see what happens?” Makina asked me.

"I think we should go to the outer rings," I replied.

As the boat glided through the water, a Qwilfish showed up, lazily swimming on the clear water.

“That is one lazy Qwilfish,” Makina remarked, watching the Pokemon slowly roll about in the water.

"I'm interested in one, so I'll be sending out my Swampert," I said so as to tell the Ranger about it. I took Swampy's Poke Ball and Swampy went out of his ball and dived into the clean water. "Okay, once the Qwilfish sees you, flush it out with a Whirlpool," I commanded the Swampert.

Swampert would then swim in circles around the Qwilfish, making a massive whirlpool to make the Qwilfish spin and make it dizzy. I know it wouldn't be much effective, but a little attack should wake up Swampy's powers.

    Ranger: Jay

I was in the process of finishing up a game of Angry Starly on my phone, when it started buzzing frantically. Hesitantly, I answered the phone. A few minutes later, I whistled Jolteon awake, grabbed up a rucksack of all the essentials that I would need and popped out the door of the cabin.

Outside, the heat was blistering and a few lazy clouds drifted by above, but I didn't have time to look at those things. I was working, and I was needed to take over for another ranger who had suddenly fallen ill. Sickness in the middle of the summer was unusual, alright, but who was I to complain? Something to do. Hell yeah.

It didn't take long to find them by the outer edges of one of the larger lakes. Akinai slipped away seeing me and I took over as I saw that a battle was about to be underway. A Qwilfish was bobbing up and down in the water as a trainer and their Swampert looked at it expectantly. I wasn't sure whether the trainer noticed me or not, but I sat down on a large, coarse rock with Jolteon sitting patiently by my side.

"I'm interested in one, so I'll be sending out my Swampert," the trainer called out. "Okay, once the Qwilfish sees you, flush it out with a Whirlpool," I commanded the Swampert.

The Swampert shot forward with surprising speed, smashing its arms down into the water. Waves sloshed over towards the wary Qwilfish, knocking it below the surface of the water for a few seconds, before it bobbed back up again. More waves crashed into the Qwilfish as it sat there helplessly in the water. Qwilfish didn't seem too affected by the waves, and appeared to grow tired of it. The spiked fish dove under the water, hiding beneath its murky depths.

"It could be challenging to get that Qwilfish out of hiding," I said aloud, making my presence clear.

"It could be challenging to get that Qwilfish out of hiding," I said aloud, making my presence clear.

I quickly noticed the new Ranger, and did made a gesture showing that I saw him.

"Swampy, use Foresight!" I said, "If the Qwilfish shows up, hit him with a Mud Shot!"

Swampy would use his extraordinary senses in touch and hearing to identify the location of the enemy. It is a highly trained act, me knowing that he has been quite using it and training it. When it comes to Mud Shot, one couldn't find in the middle of a lake. Fortunately, Swampert are known to excrete mud from their own bodies. Hence, the Mud Fish Pokemon. Swampy would accumulate it from his body systems and when the amounts are enough, he would unleash it like a beam.

I hope Swampy would foresee him and his attack would hit the Qwilfish right.

"Hey, Elisa, fancy grabbing another run?" one of our secretaries called out to me behind her desk just as I stepped into the main headquarters. "There's literally, like, no one else... As you can see."

"Hmm," I hummed thoughtfully, glancing around at the apparently empty Ranger Outpost in a bit of wonder and shock at the same time. Where was everyone? I'd just gotten back from a trip to the Power Plant and I was pretty sure that when I'd left earlier, there had still been quite a number of rangers going about, free to take on a run or two. Was it peak season already?

I glanced at her then; I saw a bothered, problematic expression plastered on her face, her eyes pleading - she was just as stressed as the rest of us rangers were, especially when we seemed short on people to take care of things. I didn't like seeing that on people's faces. Besides, it wasn't like I had anything better to do, right? Adding a little bit more to the already large pile of unfinished paperwork wasn't such a big deal, was it?

"Okay," I said, giving in. "Where to?"

"Uh, well, currently, there are three trainers waiting in line," she answered. Suddenly I could understand why she seemed so worried; three trainers still in need of a ranger after all this time wasn't good - keeping anyone waiting, really, was potentially bad for the reputation of the Park, among other things. "One of them's already in the Park - in the Great Lakes, to be specific--"

"I'll head over there now," I said hastily, cutting her off as I retrieved Adrian's Pokeball. Tossing the orb in the air to reveal my Blade Pokemon, I told the secretary, by way of explaining my decision, "Not safe leaving a trainer out there alone and unsupervised. Who knows what kind of trouble he could cause, what trouble he could get into?"

I laughed light-heartedly to show that I was only joking. But then, I thought darkly, Or rather, what trouble could find him, what might happen to him... After all, times were getting tough these days, and you could never really know what might happen to you, what danger may lurk just around the corner... I cleared my head of these thoughts as my Gallade whisked us off to the Lakes, using his honed Psychic abilities to teleport us to the said place.

Upon reaching the entrance to the zone, I quickly scanned the area for any sign of my trainer. I figured they hadn't been able to venture off too far into the place when my eyes spotted a man standing near one of the lakes with his Pokemon by his side. As I made my way over to the guy, my RDA (Ranger's Digital Assistant) beeped, telling me that the trainer's file had been sent over. I took a look and was quite surprised when I recognized the name on the form: Voltaire Magnezone, a trainer I'd taken through the Botanic Gardens some time ago, though he didn't stay for long. He'd been the first trainer I was in charge of after a long break from ranger duties.

"... hit him with a Mud Shot!" the teen shouted as I approached him. I hadn't heard the first part of his command, but his Pokemon sure did and seemed to have understood. I couldn't help but grin when I saw that his partner was a Swampert - it reminded me so much of my own Mud Fish Pokemon, Kipper, who also happened to be my starter.

"Hey," I called to grab the trainer's attention as his Swampy trudged over to the edge of the lake, peering down into the calm waters. "Nice to see you again, Voltaire. I'm taking over for Jay, he had to go somewhere..." I said the last part a little unsurely; after all, I had no clue as to what my fellow ranger had to do that he had to leave this trainer here so suddenly.

I then directed my attention over to the Swampert, wondering just who they were battling against. There didn't seem to be any creature swimming about in the lake, yet the Water-Ground-type appeared to be staring intently at the water, concentration written all over his face. If there was a foe present - and I assumed there was, else we wouldn't be sticking around here - then it was probably hiding under water, and perhaps Swampy was on the look-out for it, trying to determine its whereabouts in order to fire off an attack. The creature seemed very modest, though, seemingly content to sit there and do things in a very simple manner.

I didn't have to wonder about the unknown wild creature for much longer; suddenly, a puffed up version of a Qwilfish sprang out of the water with a splash. The Water-Poison-type looked as though it was inflated, its cheeks all puffed up, the spikes on its body bristling out menacingly. And from these protrusions came a shower of small, bright green arrows, their sharp tips glinting under the sunlight as they soared through the air.

The needle-like missiles came raining down on the Mud Fish Pokemon, piercing his wet, watery exterior like little darts sticking on a dartboard. They sunk through his flimsy, amphibian outer covering, embedding themselves in his body. The assalt dealt minimal damage, but Voltaire and his partner would have to careful from now on - having little projectiles embedded in you, no matter how small they seemed, could be dangerous, risky. When the bombardment of Pin Missiles had ended, the wild entity shrunk back to its normal size, plopping about in the water.

The Swampert quickly retaliated with a Mud Shot technique. It didn't take him long to gather energy from within himself and accumulate a good amount of mud to fire off, which led me to believe that he'd been preparing the attack ever since he spotted the Balloon Pokemon begin to surface; he inhaled sharply, then the next moment, he tossed his head forward, mouth wide open, releasing a slew of thick, brown masses. The muddy orbs slammed into the opponent, attempting to hold him back, to slow him down, to keep him from moving as efficiently; the poor Qwilfish had been greeted by a barrage of icky brown stuff that slushed against his face (or rather, his whole body, as its his was his face, in a sense). I winced slightly in distaste - right now, upon seeing someone perform that technique after so long (I hadn't used that move in battle in ages), I didn't want to find out how Swamperts produced mud from within their own body systems, the revelation would probably, er, scar me to the point that I could never look at a Mud Fish Pokemon the same way again.

With the muck covering up the whole of his face, blinding him and just generally making him feel so unclean, the Water-Poison-type decided to do the one thing he knew could get rid of all the sludge on him. He danced, in a sense, calling for rain to come pattering down. He chanted some sort of incantation, praying for the clouds to let loose - after all, the atmosphere was already humid as is, the pressure low, so a storm wasn't too much to ask for, was it? And apparently it wasn't, for just a few moments after the Qwilfish's little dance, there was a roar of thunder as the first large droplets of rain came cascading down. I retrieved an umbrella from my brown bag quickly, opening it up over myself and the trainer just in time before we could experience the worst of the rainstorm. My Gallade had also quickly returned to his Pokeball at the first sign of drizzling.

The rain made quick work of the mud on the Pokemon's face, washing it away and into the lake, turning the water into a murky shade of dirty brown, polluting the habitat of who knows how many creatures. The Qwilfish loved the rain, it seemed, as he appeared to be more energetic, constantly zipping around the pool. It was more agile now, too, probably due to his Swift Swim ability activating.

The Balloon Pokemon wasn't done just yet, though. He began to inflate himself once more, puffing out his cheeks and letting the spikes on his body grow. Then, with a deep breath, he pushed them off him, shooting them off all around him. They landed on the land surrounding the edge of the lake, scattered about like a layer of explosives or mines ready to blow up upon contact with something, anything. Or perhaps, stepping on them was better likened to stepping on metal jacks on lego blocks in a child's room - and we all knew how much that would hurt, really hurt. As the wild entity continued to shoot sharp projectiles onto the ground between him and the Swampert, Swampy shuffled a couple of steps backward instinctively to avoid getting hit by them, distancing himself from the opponent. He looked to Voltaire for support, wondering just how his trainer would want him to go about this now. It'd be a challenge to make direct contact with the Qwilfish now; they would probably have to result to long-range tactics now, using special-based assaults.

"Oh hey there. Nice to see you again," I said as the new Ranger, Ranger Elisa, went near and rode the boat. "Looks like the other Rangers seem to be busy."

Back to the battlefield, the Qwilfish did a mix attack of Pin Missile and Spikes, leaving very sharp projectiles everywhere on the land on the egde of the lakes and some clung into Swampy's body. For it's last move, the Qwilfish used a move called Rain Dance and summoned strong rains. Because of that, I had to take shelter in one of the Ranger's umbrellas. Hopefully, this rain would not be that dangerous.

First, I need to remove those sharp things away from Swampy. I guess this one could help. "Swampy, jump into the lake and flush those spikes in your body with Surf and attack the Qwilfish along with it!" I commanded the Swampert.

I'm not really sure if the Surf attack could remove the pesky spikes in his body, but I think the great force of the water could help. Swampy would jump to the lake, and summon a large amount of water from the lake and swim through it as the waters turn into a giant tidal wave. Along with the movement of the raging wave into the Qwilfish, the spikes would then detach from the Swampert and be no longer a threat or something.

"After that, do a Hammer Arm attack!" I said as a follow-up to the move.

After Swampy had attacked the Qwilfish with the Surf Attack, his two large hands would glow into a silver light and he would punch the Qwilfish with a tremendous amount of force. It is a powerful attack, but there is a side-effect to that but I just can't remember what that was effect be.

Voltaire seemed to have understood the danger of the embedded projectiles in Swampy's body. Taking a risk, he asked his Pokemon to plunge into the water, hopefully avoiding the scattered spikes on the ground that way, then surf around, hoping to rid himself of the shards pierced in his skin.

The jumping part of the command was probably the hardest thing for the Swampert to execute - for one, he wasn't sure if he would actually make it into the lake, considering how heavy he was; second, the sudden movement of leaping forwards was rather risky as the spikes could just embed themselves even further into the creature's body, and a deep "infiltration" like that could be dangerous for the Pokemon's well-being.

Still, he obeyed. He shuffled a couple of steps back, then zipped forward, his hind legs pushing against the ground, propelling him upwards and forwards, sending him soaring through the air. For some reason, the whole scene reminded me of one line: "I believe I can fly!! I believe I can touch the sky..." You know how it goes. Then, Swampy was plummeting to the ground - it almost seemed like he wouldn't make it, that he would land directly on the little arrows that he was intending to avoid in the first place. I was very nearly surprised when the Water-Ground-type managed, barely, to reach the other side of the layer of spikes, splashing into the lake with tremendous force, giving the water and the Qwilfish a bit of a jolt, a mighty pounce, resulting in large waves lurching violently around him.

From the newly-created tidals, the Mud Fish Pokemon began his Surf technique, letting the water wash over him while at the same time propelling him forward and towards the wild entity. As he swam across the lake, the water rinsed him (despite it being a slightly murky shade from the earlier Mud Shot tactic); the flow and pressure of the water pushed the little projectiles out of his body - the waves flooding his backside, tumbling down his blue back and pulling the spikes with them.

The Qwilfish, upon seeing the gigantic tidal that was about to come crashing down on him, decided to use the waterfall-like wave to his advantage as well. As his body became surrounded by a tunnel of spiraling water, the wild Pokemon shot forward, propelling himself upwards at quite a surprisingly high velocity, rising up despite the rain thundering down in heaps. He rocketed into the air, riding the water to climb up up up, then slammed into his much, much larger opponent's chest with such brute force that the sudden collision shocked even the bulky Swampert, nearly causing him to lose focus and plunge back down to the ground.

But the little Balloon Pokemon wasn't done yet. As the mini vortex of water and energy around him disappeared, he spun around, sticking his tail out. It was immediately surrounded by a brilliant light blue energy, and as the Water-Poison-type brought it down upon the Mud Fish Pokemon's head, a scythe- or crescent-like wave of water formed, ramming into the target for that little extra push. And that was when Swampy really lost his concentration on controlling the tidal wave, on controlling the energy that was propelling him forward and upwards at the same time, his head throbbing madly, constantly.

They both plummeted as the wave they were surfing on crashed back down to earth, rolling peacefully along with the rest of the lake's water.

As the two Pokemon sunk into the water, the Qwilfish dove back underneath the surface as the Water-Ground-type breathed heavily, already preparing his next assault. He lifted his front legs, resting on his hind legs for support as he, for the moment at least, used these front two as arms. They began to glow a bright white hue, energy flowing all around. Swampy slammed his arms down on the water all around him as he tried to coax the wild creature to come out of hiding. Eventually, the Qwilfish did show himself, though I did not know if it was out of his own wanting or if it was because of the Swampert's arms constantly disturbing the water and causing it to lurch violently again. Not wasting a second, the trainer's partner rammed his arms into the opponent, the heavy jabbing sending a wave of pain to course through the entity's small body. His whole body throbbed the same way the Mud Fish Pokemon's head was, constant and continuous thick slabs of hurt just stabbing into him all over.

The Balloon Pokemon then circled around the Swampert, swimming all around the lake as he gathered up his energy. Staying a good distance away, he then sucked in a deep breath before pushing out bomb after bomb after bomb of hazardous substance at his opponent. It was much like the Mud Shot technique Swampy used earlier, except this time, instead of murk, it was full of possibly poisonous chemicals and Poison-type energy, the sludge an ominous shade of purple.

Oh, the poor poor lake and plants that thrived there - first mud and now poison, what next?
