Alice took a while to respond since she was studying Shedinja intensely. Thinking back, I didn't really had any Pokemon out with me this time unlike the usual times. Commonly, like trainers, rangers preferred to walk their trainer around the park with their own Pokemon as well. Not only would their Pokemon be more adept at handling park issues that might occur with wild Pokemon, it provides them with a sort of defense against rowdy Pokemon.

"Not in the slightest," she replied after a while. "Let's am-scray; this thing gives me the creeps."

"Alright, here we go!" I announced and we walked away from the Shedinja. I figured if it had really intended to leave us alone, it wouldn't follow us. If not, Alice was either going to have to fight it or use a Pokedoll. Thankfully though, Shedinja didn't seemed to be bothered at our presence. While walking though, I could felt a pair of eyes staring my every movements down still. It sure was creepy.

We had continued to walk forward, and the ground was considerably rougher than before. There were large uneven patches of concrete or gravel all around the ground, I couldn't even tell which was which. Some of them were natural, while some of them were the product of man-made pavements. They must have been quite old though, for the ground was just full of chipped stones.

We were mostly one a one-way path now, and there was no turning back. Up again however, was a mountain of rocks and boulders. It could be a possible roadblock, but there was a small crevice by the side. It seemed to be of the right size for us to squeeze through. Roadblocks like these were nothing surprising, since there are numerous events that could cause it, like the trembling of the cave, or perhaps some Pokemon battle. On noticing closer, I realized that that was not all. There was a Swoobat right up ahead, and it was circling around the mountain of rocks, while emitting rings of magenta-pink waves. It seemed to be looking for something.

    "Interested in a Swoobat perhaps?"

Evidently, Shedinja wanted as little to do with Alice as she wanted to do with it. The empty eye sockets watched impassively as Ataro cried, "Alright, here we go!" and started walking. Ranger, Trainer, and Serperior walked away down the tunnels without incident.

The terrain began to get downright bizarre pretty quickly. Cement, of all things, covered the ground in places. "Did someone try to make a street here?" Alice muttered to Darius. The Serperior replied with a twitch of his collar - the closest he could get to a shrug without having actual arms. Alice focused on the path again; she still slightly curious about the wrecked road, but she was far more curious about what sort of awesome Pokemon could be hiding in the cave depths.

A sudden flash of pink light caught Alice's attention. There was a huge mountain of rocks and rubble up ahead, with just a small space left between it and the wall to let people through. More pulses of light, still hot pink, pulsed from a Pokemon hovering near the debris: a dark-blue creature hovering on broad, black wings. A Swoobat, Alice realized. It didn't seem to notice the humans; it was intent on the rocks, as if it was searching for something buried under them.

"Interested in a Swoobat perhaps?" Ataro asked, jolting Alice out of her studying. She knew the answer almost immediately - she didn't want the Pokemon, but she was highly interested in what it was doing. Perhaps there was something of value hidden under the rocks. Either way, her curiosity was awake.

"Not really," she admitted quietly. "But do you think that we could hang around? This probably sounds stupid, but I kind of want to know what that bat's up to."

Alice seemed to be studying the Swoobat intensely now. She was probably getting curious as to what the Swoobat was doing. "Not really," she admitted quietly. "But do you think that we could hang around? This probably sounds stupid, but I kind of want to know what that bat's up to."

    "Sure," I replied casually.

I led her up to the suspicious bat, and we were studying the pile of boulders now. It had reached up the height of our shoulders approximately. Upon studying closer, I had noticed that the boulders was in a shade of blue actually. That was definitely weird. I had never seen blue boulders in my life. It was possible that they were meteors, but it was clear that Swoobat was as intrigued as we were.

Suddenly, the pile of boulders had started to vibrate. I quickly raised my hands ahead of Alice, to try and prevent her from moving closer if she had tried to. I'm sure she wasn't all that dumb, but it was just a defensive measure. It was our duty to protect our trainers anyway. From the rumbling exploded a couple of boulders that flew in all directions, but we were relatively safe though. The dust and smoke that appeared from that blinded us temporarily, and I started to choke from that.

After a while, I had managed to get some clean breaths again and wiped my eyes to identify what was going on. Gone was the pile of boulders, and replacing that was a Golett instead. It made a sort of automaton voice and pumped its fists, as if it was ready for a fight. It was probably taking a rest and camouflaged itself within a pile of rocks, when we had disturbed it. Realizing Swoobat was studying it earlier too, I looked up to discover that the Flying-type Pokemon was no longer there. It had to be scared off.

"Well, looks like we have a pretty rare Pokemon here. Interested in a Golett?"

Fortunately for Alice, Ataro was willing to wait around and see what Swoobat was up to. "Sure," he said nonchalantly, as if he had expected some curiosity on Alice's part. He walked closer to the debris pile; Alice followed, doing her best not to disturb Swoobat by making a lot of noise. She studied the boulders, watching carefully as Swoobat sent out another probing pink pulse. One of the boulders trembled slightly. As the magenta tint faded, Alice realized that it looked slightly different from the others - was that rock blue?

As if on some sort of cue, the whole pile began to shake. Ataro threw up his hands protectively, preventing Alice from going any further - not that she would have done so, anyway. Earthquakes and rock slides were nothing that she wanted to trifle with. Darius slithered protectively in front of her, glaring at Swoobat as if he thought that the bat was causing the tremors, but Swoobat seemed just as startled as the rest of them. As the rocks began to fall, it turned away from the pile and flapped away as fast as its wings could take it.

With a loud crash, the stones collapsed, creating a huge shower of dust. Alice shielded her eyes, while Darius waved his tail to clear the air. After a few moments, when she could breathe again without getting a lungful of debris, Alice looked up. A Pokemon was standing among the rocks' wreckage - it was the blue boulder that Alice had picked out before. It lifted a pair of sturdy-looking fists and let out a tinny, hollow warble that resembled a yawn.

"Well, looks like we have a pretty rare Pokemon here," Ataro pointed out. "Interested in a Golett?" Alice watched Golett for a few moments, weighing the Pokemon's pros and cons. On the one hand, it would be her last Pokemon if she caught it; on the other, Golurk - its evolved form - was an excellent attacker, and its handy typing allowed it to slip past Normal, Fighting, and Ground-type attacks.

After a healthy dose of consideration, Alice made up her mind. "Yeah." She looked at Darius, who perked up considerably at the thought of one last brawl. "Go for it, Darius. Scare Golett senseless with Leer, and follow up with Leaf Blade while its knees are knocking."

Immediately, Darius slithered forward at high speed. Golett looked up, watching the intruder to its cave with wariness in its yellow eyes. It let out a low, gravelly rumble of warning, but Darius was undaunted. He stopped near the smaller Pokemon and lifted his head up high, looming imperiously over the little automaton. His chest swelled, his frills lifted, and his eyes began to glow with a menacing red light. The leaves on his tail began to glow bright green as he prepared to strike the distracted Golett.

Alice had took a while to consider while studying the Golett intensely. I didn't blamed her. She have had an impressive good run that many others would have wished for. She was only on her first few encounters and she had already captured an Abra and a Solosis. Both of these Pokemon were highly sought after by many trainers. And now, there's Golett. Many trainers would have wished they were Alice right now. She took a while before replying with an affirmative, and commanded her Serperior to attack.

"Go for it, Darius. Scare Golett senseless with Leer, and follow up with Leaf Blade while its knees are knocking."

I really wasn't sure why Leer was so scary. It had seemed particularly cute and funny to me, and if I was on the receiving end of a Leer attack, I'd probably just giggle instead. I watched as Serperior slithered forward with amazing speed and his eyes had suddenly turned crimson red.

    ...

Not that cute after all. I backed away a couple of footsteps as I was disturbed by Serperior's Leer. You really couldn't blame me now. The only time I have seen Leer being used was by a Pikachu and a Scraggy. The way those two used were completely different and when they had used Leer, it was so adorably funny that you felt like hugging them. Serperior meanwhile, was definitely not the case. Imagine a python creeping up on you and its eyes suddenly turning blood red? That's Serperior now.

I studied Serperior's opponent now and the Golett was inching back as well. It had cowered its head slightly, but that was the call for Serperior to attack. The leaves on Serperior's tail began to glow a bright emerald green in preparation for his next attack.

On noticing the green glow, Golett quickly realized what was going on and planted itself into the ground. Well, not exactly. But it had stood upright and its foot had sunk slightly into the ground. Its body had glowed in a glistening white flash, but Serperior wasn't sitting around to observe. With a quick spin of his tail, he strike a Leaf Blade onto the Golett. I had the Golett to collapse back, or at least back a couple of steps from the impact of the attack, but it had simply took the Leaf Blade to its chest and withstood the attack completely. I took a while to grasp the possibility of that, considering that Leaf Blade was supposed to be a super effective hit after all.

It had then dawned on me that Golett must have used Iron Defense earlier. Coupled with its natural heavy weight, it had probably took the Leaf Blade attack like it was a tank. Taking advantage of the close proximity that they had, Golett's right fist glowed and was surrounded in a silhouette of white and it landed a direct punch onto Serperior's head immediately. I wouldn't be surprised if that Mega Punch hadn't deal as much damage as usual, since Serperior's body surface was rather small and slippery. That helped to cushion off attacks like Mega Punch. Regardless, the attack was a direct hit and the close proximity had severely increased the accuracy of it. Serperior was sent back flying like a ragdoll, before regaining his composure again. He had stared down at Golett harder than before.

I definitely wouldn't want to be Golett right now. Species like Serperior were well-known to be elegant and confident of their abilities, and they tended to not take most opponents seriously, unless their opponent was particularly powerful. I was pretty sure that Serperior certainly didn't think that way, for it seemed to be more annoyed than challenged at this point in time. He was probably more adamant than before, in wanting to exercise some superiority over the Golett right now.

As Alice saw Golett begin to cringe, she grinned, but she winced when she saw the silvery flash that rippled down its lumpy body. There was no mistaking the metallic sheen for anything other than what it was: an emergency Iron Defense. That, coupled with Golett's weight and the way it braced its feet against the ground, was why it barely seemed fazed when Darius's tail struck.

Darius's eyes widened with surprise - he was used to crushing tiny opponents like this with single blows from his powerful tail, and yet Golett was completely and utterly unmoved and undaunted. As Darius reeled back slightly from the recoil of his attack, Golett's fist began to glow with a stark white light. It leaped up and slammed a powerful punch into the side of Darius's head, knocking him sprawling across the rough cave floor. Alice let out a soft hiss, but forced herself not to let her pity show on her face - Darius was ever proud, and he hated to see her worrying about him.

Quickly, Darius pulled himself into an upright position and glared down at Golett in undisguised contempt. There was an air of anger about him, too; his great pride had quite obviously been injured. No doubt he wanted to take Golett down as quickly - and, more than likely, as painfully - as he could. In this respect, Alice reflected, he was different from other Serperiors. Most of the great grass-snakes dealt with lesser opponents with halfhearted attacks and an extraordinary lack of effort. Darius, however, constantly wanted to prove just how superior he was to whomever he was fighting by knocking them senseless outright with the most brutal attacks he could muster - an inversion that Alice reckoned might have been due to his Contrary ability. After all, Contrary inverted stat changes, so it may have had some effect on a Pokemon's personality. Either way, Darius's was a great fighting style much of the time, but there was one main drawback: opponents that looked weak could often sneak up on the savvy snake and give him a sharp shock. This was the case with Golett, and if Darius was going to come through victoriously then he was going to have to start looking at his opponent as a threat.

With that in mind, Alice decided that it would be best if Darius stayed out of the range of Golett's arms - given that it was so tiny, that wasn't going to be too difficult. "Hang back, Darius," she advised, hoping that he would listen without plunging right into the fray. She doubted that he would, though - he could be arrogant, but he wasn't a moron. "Now, hit him with a big Leaf Storm!"

Darius's expression seemed to light up with anticipation, and his leaf-tipped tail flashed green once again. He twirled his glinting tail about like a sparkler, leaving glittery trails of bright green light wherever it went. The light seemed to crystallize, forming a swirl of glowing, razor-sharp leaves. In seconds, Darius had formed a huge cyclone of foliage, which he sent flying at Golett in what looked like a churning, luminous hail of green daggers.

"Hang back, Darius," Alice advised, hoping that her Serperior would listen without plunging right into the fray. Sure enough, the Serperior started to inch back slightly, while still focusing on Golett with strained eyes. "Now, hit him with a big Leaf Storm!"

As if his wish was fulfilled, the Serperior let out a screech before lighting up with a new found determination. The tip of his tail glowed in a bright hue of emerald green, and he twirled it to create a spiraling swirl of vortex filled with razor sharp leaves.

Meanwhile, the Golett had simply stood there. The glistening sheen of metal coating glowed once more, and it seemed pretty confident. So much so that, it was just standing there without moving. Perhaps it had took the previous Leaf Blade strongly, and it had assumed it could take on this one as well. I wasn't too sure about that however. Leaf Storm was much unlike Leaf Blade, in that it was a ranged-based attack. It was also far more powerful than Leaf Blade.

I watched on Serperior directed the powerful Leaf Storm towards his opponent. The vortex of piercing leaves had struck Golett, and a layer of sheen had broken off onto the ground, falling off as dust. Golett was forced backwards, and fell backwards on its feet. The Leaf Storm had certainly dealt more damage than the previous Leaf Blade attack, and Golett was only lucky that it had piled up layers of Iron Defenses. Although Leaf Storm had managed to cut through the first layer, the second layer was still intact. Even if Golett was hurt very badly back there, a capture probably wouldn't be successful.

Other than the health of a Pokemon, there was also another factor that had determined a successful capture. It was relatively complex, but it had something to do with the mood of the Pokemon. Rarer Pokemon were naturally harder to capture, and they would of course take longer. Golett was looking pretty unsettled currently, and I had a feeling that it would just avoid capture easily.

Golett was still down on the ground. Perhaps that was why all of us was taken by surprise. Out of nowhere, a shadow had appeared and it pummeled into the cheek of Serperior. Alice's Pokemon had managed to withstand his ground, but it was certainly taken aback. Golett smirked briefly, before taking its own sweet time to stand up steadily.

"Uhh, I think that was a Shadow Punch," I remarked. It was definitely a stealthy and sneaky attack. Alice and Serperior were lucky that Shadow Punch was luckily, not a very strong move. That was perhaps added on by the fact that Golett had just taken a harsh beating from Leaf Storm.

Suddenly, Serperior had glowed briefly in a white flash. I wasn't sure what was going on, but the very same tail that had executed Leaf Storm earlier was glowing in the same emerald hue. It took me a while to recall Serperior's special ability - Contrary - before I had pieced the puzzle out. Golett was not going to like this...

Evidently, Golett was taking stubbornness lessons from Darius. In a completely unprecedented response to Darius's attack, the stubborn golem dug its feet into the gravel and balled up its fingers into stubby fists. Once again, a rippling wave of silver shimmered across its lumpy body - another Iron Defense. The difference here, though, thought Alice as she watched the rain of botanic daggers fly, is that Darius wouldn't mess this up so badly. Iron Defense was a handy trick against an all-out physical assault, but more widespread attacks like Leaf Storm could easily slip through the little weak spots that it left behind.

Golett found this out the hard way. The Leaf Storm ripped through its defenses with a grating, metallic scream that made Alice's teeth rattle to listen to and sent it skidding across the cavern. Its arms waved for a second and it lost its balance, landing on its blue bottom with a hollow, tinny thump. For a moment, Alice wondered if it would be vulnerable to capture, but there was still a fierce set to its shoulders that made her wary. It would keep on fighting, she didn't doubt - which meant that she and Darius would as well.

A flickering movement in the gloom caught Alice's eye: a dark hand, curled into a fist and lashing out, making Darius reel from pain. He hissed furiously, righting himself in time to glare venomously down at Golett. There was a smug air to the little automaton, and it rose with an easy slowness that suggested complete indifference to Darius's wrath.

    That was its first mistake.

What Golett seemed not to notice was the faint green glow around Darius's tail. His Contrary ability was kicking in, which meant that he - in a bizarre reversal of the law of physics - actually gained energy from the Leaf Storm instead of losing it, like most other Pokemon would have.

Alice smiled, and despite his obvious irritation there was a smug air in the way Darius held his head. He leered down at Golett, looking strong and in control once again. "You're doing great, Darius!" Alice called out. She considered how best to proceed for a brief second: Golett's punches were a problem, even for a tough Pokemon like Darius, and a little bit of weakness on its part would be helpful. Most of the time, Alice would have had Darius pin Golett's arms with a Wrap attack, but the move would slip right through Golett's ethereal body. That leaves tying it down with vines, or... Alice grinned as her brain had one of the few brilliant moments where it worked properly. Golett was strong on its own, but it also relied upon an ability that gave its punches a particular power: Iron Fist. It just so happened that Darius knew exactly how to deal with abilities. "Use Gastro Acid!"

Darius hissed audibly, and his chest began to twitch as toxins welled up in his body. A line of purple fizz appeared around his lips as the poisons in his mouth demanded release. There was a brief pause, and then Darius opened his jaws and let out a spray of violet venom. Once Golett was doused, its Iron Fist ability would fizzle out as if it had never been.

"You're doing great, Darius!" Alice voiced out her encouragement.

The Serperior had continued to stare down at his opponent intensely. It was almost painful to watch for me. I knew clearly that Golett wasn't going to stand a chance compared to a Contrary Serperior like Alice's, and it was truly only a matter of when it would finally be captured. Serperior was weakened even before the battle had started however, and there was a slight possibility that Golett might knock it out.

"Use Gastro Acid!" Alice shouted suddenly.

I didn't even had to think what attack that was, for I knew it all too clearly. Gastro Acid was a sludge-inducing attack that would render the opponent's ability useless temporarily. In this case, if I could recall correctly, Golett could either have Iron Fist, Klutz, or No Guard. The attacks that Golett had used so far were largely punch-based attacks though, and that could be possibly why Alice had used Iron Fist. Still, it was possible that it could have been the other two abilities instead. If it was Klutz, Gastro Acid would have been useless then.

I waited to see if Golett's actions would give it away. The purple sludge was spat out of Serperior's mouth and it instantly aimed and covered the Golett's fists with a glistening fuchsia purple. The Golett started to wince in frustration as it tried to shake off the starchy liquid, but it was not working. There was still no telling if it was Iron Fist.

That was not important now. With a wild shriek, the Golett had quickly withdrew its head and legs into its armor-encased body. It struggled briefly to withdraw its arms as well, but the sludge seemed to prevent it from doing so. It shrugged and gave up doing that, and decided to just attack right away. With a sudden push, in its ball-like withdrawal state, it sped towards Serperior by rolling itself across the field. Sand and dirt had whipped up in the air, caused by Golett's rolling. It then smashed into Serperior's head, before quickly spinning away in defense, and back onto its original position before it had attacked. It was still withdrawn, but that wasn't surprising. It was Rollout after all. With this attack, as long as it had hit consecutively, each hit's power would be dramatically boosted, due to the increasing momentum.

Then again, even though Golett was completely not Serperior's match, Alice would have to take extra caution to not knock out Golett. Serperior was a Grass-type and his attacks naturally would deal much more damage to Golett than usual, due to super-effectiveness. Especially with Serperior's now pumped up Special Attack stat, a moderate-powered Grass-type attack could jolly well just knock out Golett right away. That would spoil the entire capture. I observed the Golett for a while, and it did looked rather healthy and pumped up still. It was still going to need some weakening, before a capture could be attempted.

Golett shivered as the poison struck its body, drenching it in a mess of violet slime. Most of the liquid seemed to be concentrated on its fists, and Alice grinned - there was Darius's special, somewhat spiteful touch. It might have an extra effect, Alice realized suddenly - if the liquid stuck, it would help to cushion the impact should Golett go for punching moves again. Which, Alice thought to herself, it shouldn't, provided Gastro Acid took effect. I just hope -

The sound of a frantic clanging, raised to a tinny scream, jolted Alice out of her thoughts. Golett was frantically waving its arms, trying to get the sludge off; as Alice watched, it abruptly changed tack withdrew its head and legs into the round shell of its body. It tried to bring its arms in, too, but it found itself unable to do this - the slime was probably jamming its joints. Seeming resigned, it pushed itself off the floor with a quick sweep of its arms and folded them against its chest, rolling toward Darius at a hurried pace. Darius had time only to look surprised before Golett extended its legs briefly and jumped to smack against his face. He reeled slightly, taken aback by the blow. Golett hit the floor and rolled away toward the back of the cave at an increased pace. It would come back around quickly, Alice knew. Well, so much for my first plan, she thought irritably. But she would get to put it into action eventually; she just had to be patient. And stop Golett, of course!

"Use Leaf Blade to stop it, Darius, but don't hit too hard!" Golett was still up and kicking - or rolling, as it were - but it was weakening, and Darius was far stronger. The last thing Alice wanted was to have Darius hit too hard and knock the poor thing out. After all, catching fainted Pokemon was against the rules, and Alice did truly want to catch herself a Golett.

Darius nodded slightly and glared at Golett, holding his glowing tail erect and at the ready. For a moment, Alice worried that Golett would try something tricky like jumping again, but she trusted Darius. He had extremely sharp reflexes, and without a doubt he'd be able to bring Golett down to its knees with a well-timed blow.

"Use Leaf Blade to stop it, Darius, but don't hit too hard!" Alice called out.

I nodded my head in approval at my trainer's choice of move. She only had to weaken Golett from now on, and using moves that were of her Pokemon's type, Grass, was the ideal choice. Furthermore, thanks to Contrary, her Serperior's Special Attack was now boosted, and even using just a ranged-moderate-powered Grass-type attack would prove to be dangerous.

Her Serperior nodded slightly and started to hold his glowing tail ... erect. That was probably not the most appropriate word. Or perhaps it was just me. Anyway, it was definitely up and standing straight, glowing in a glistening hue of emerald green. The Golett had rolled in again. Except, this time, it was visibly faster and more violent in its trails. It would be a match of strength between Serperior's Leaf Blade and Golett's Rollout. I was betting on Serperior though. Even though Rollout was on its possibly second consecutive streak, Leaf Blade was still stronger in terms of power and it had the same-type attack bonus that Golett didn't had with Rollout.

As Golett was about to clash with Serperior, he smirked briefly before raising his tail to smash into the ball that Golett had formed. Golett was stopped cold by the block, but it was still spinning now. Both Pokemon started wincing while struggling, before Serperior called out a final cry and pushed Golett back with a sudden force of collision. I started to wonder if that meant Rollout was stopped, but Golett was still rolled in a ball while sent flying backwards. It flew back and struck the surface of the wall behind us. Immediately, the cave shook violently and the sound of falling rocks were echoing around. It had better not collapse...

However, even though Golett was slammed into the wall, still in its rolling position, it rolled off the ground slowly and continued rolling in its original position. It was definitely rolling slower than before, but I could tell that it was trying to gain back its momentum by rolling on the spot. Meanwhile, Serperior didn't look worried as well. I looked at the area where his tail had clashed with Golett. There was visible bruises that had formed, but Golett had definitely received triple the amount of damage that Serperior had received from that clash there.

For a highly absurd second, Alice was worried that Darius wouldn't be able to stand up to Golett's attack. The little robot tore through the cave at insane speed, its rotations downright violent. Dust and white streaks of energy streamed out behind it, giving it the appearance of some sort of blue comet. Darius, however, looked as confident and self-assured as ever. He hefted his tail and scanned Golett's movements with keen red eyes, waiting for the critical moment in which he'd strike.

A hollow clang rang through the cave - a deafening sound that made Alice's teeth rattle. Alice couldn't help but wonder if Darius had dented Golett, but it seemed to be undaunted. While it couldn't move forward any further, it kept on spinning under the weight of Darius's tail. Darius's eyes tightened and his mouth pulled back in a grimace, but his tail kept pressing harder. One of them had to give eventually, Alice knew.

But Darius, of course, had never been one for giving in. With one final push and a loud, strained hiss, he sent Golett rocketing across the cave, causing another loud racket as it hit the wall. For a terrifying moment, Alice felt the ground shake slightly, and a few rocks began to fall from the cave ceiling. The tremor was minor, but Alice got the message: no more knocking heavy Goletts into walls. That was fine; they should be able to finish out this fight relatively easily. Golett had to be on its last legs by then.

However, that didn't mean that it was going to stop fighting, apparently. Alice had expected it to stop after taking Darius's hit, but it began to roll doggedly toward its serpentine opponent. Its speed seemed to have been diminished somewhat, but on it soldered, still stubborn. Alice glanced at Darius, who was beginning to tire as well. A direct attack would not be best, she decided - and anyway, she knew that that route would only lead to more tremors. "Darius!" she shouted, "trap Golett with a Leaf Tornado!" Once Golett was stuck, it would be forced to stop - and once it stopped, Alice would have a nice opportunity to try for a capture.

Darius's tail began to glow once again. He spun it around, creating a small swirl of bright green leaves. With a broad sweep of his tail, he sent it flying across the cave. It hit the rocky floor and spun toward Golett like a crazed top. Alice watched carefully, hoping that Golett would be truly trapped.

Alice had thought for a while before commanding her next attack. "Darius!" she shouted, "trap Golett with a Leaf Tornado!"

She was probably getting worried about the consecutive hits that Rollout has managed to score on Serperior. Although Rollout start out as a very weak attack, when it manages to land consecutive hits, its attack power rises dramatically. Not only was Leaf Tornado super effective against Golett, it also had the ability to render the foe incapable of movement, due to the strength of the suction power in the vortex.

Then again, unlike Leaf Blade, Leaf Tornado was a ranged attack and it would thus have the boost from the earlier Leaf Storm stat raise that Contrary had given. This was probably going to be a very close call, since there was a high possibility of Leaf Tornado knocking out Golett in one shot, especially if Golett was going to take it head-on again.

As Serperior's tail began to glow again, he spun it around quickly in a swirling motion. A small vortex of lush green leaves was soon created and it expanded in size dramatically. Not even bothering to wait for it to grow to its full-size, Alice's Serperior swept it across with a powerful swing of his tail.

For once, I had managed to catch a glimpse of nervousness in Golett's eyes. Its eyes had widened slightly and it had automatically unwrapped itself from the earlier Rollout position. It was looking left and right frantically, as if to search for a solution to Serperior's Leaf Tornado. With a sudden push, it forced itself up into the air before landing back down with a forceful thud. The ground around it instantly started to crack and small fissures had started to form. As the Leaf Tornado spun across the field quickly, one of the fissure struck it and suddenly, the vortex had lost its momentum and was spinning wildly.

Serperior's eyes had glowed green at this time, and I was sure that he was trying to control the direction of the Leaf Tornado. Regardless, the fissure had already weakened the power and influenced the direction of the attack and it was highly possible that it was not going to be as strong as before. Just as one of the fissure connected to Serperior, his eyes stopped glowing and the vortex had struck Golett at the same time. Serperior cowered in pain as he felt the full force of the tremor for the first time in this battle, while Golett was instantly trapped in a vortex of razor-sharp leaves.

As the vortex died down, Golett fell to the ground and it was obvious that that last attack that it had took had taken all it was capable of. There was many bruises and cuts on Golett's body as it laid on the ground incapable of moving any further. It was definitely not knocked out yet as it was still struggling to move, but it had hardly any energy left. Serperior meanwhile, had regained from its earlier cowering position and continued to stare down at Golett. The Earthquake had dealt damage, but with his pride and all, it was no surprise that he wasn't going to continue cowering in pain.

Regardless, Golett was definitely ready for a capture and this battle would come to an end. The battle had took a while, but Golett was a rather rare Pokemon after all. I start to wonder if Alice had wanted to continue after this anyway. She have had an amazing streak of luck in encountering rare Pokemon on this trip and she has already captured a full set of three. Most trainers would just leave after that, although some continued to stay in search of rarer Pokemon or specific ones that they had wanted. I would have to ask her after this capture.

    @No one in particular, as yet;

What started out as a great Leaf Tornado - and a wonderful act of restraint on Darius's part; she knew that that wasn't the best attack her Pokemon could offer, and was used for the sake of speed rather than power - very nearly fell apart. Apparently, Golett had sensed the attack coming and pulled its limbs back into the open, breaking its protective Rollout pose. With urgency and fear that were new in this battle, it shoved its bulky body into the air and came crashing back down again, sending cracks rippling across the cave. Barely restraining curses, Alice reached for Darius's Pokeball and tensed to run while the ground trembled and shivered beneath her feet. The Leaf Tornado was caught by the Earthquake attack as well; it began to spin and gyrate wildly, slowed and unbalanced by the uneven earth. Frankly, Alice couldn't have cared less what with the possibility of a collapse-causing quake.

Fortunately for all of them, however, Golett was weakened by Darius's preceding attacks, and the tremors were widespread through the chamber but not severe. One of the fissures had slammed into Darius, causing him to writhe and wince. Golett didn't escape unscathed either; the Leaf Tornado connected, and despite its diminished speed it managed to both trap and trip the wounded Golett. When the whirlwind of razor leaves faded, Golett collapsed to the stone floor with a hollow clang. It was clearly exhausted, and while it didn't seem to be knocked out, it certainly was in little shape to keep fighting. However, Darius - despite being undoubtedly in pain - stood tall and strong once more. The sight put a small smile on Alice's face. It was time to go for the capture.

Moving quickly so as to launch the Ball before Golett rose, Alice reached into her bag and pulled out her last Park Ball. She threw in all of her weight to give it a strong, concise toss and then bounced back on her heels and crossed her fingers as she waited to see whether it would stay shut.

    @VeloJello;

    NBP#1

"Whoa, that is one long list, I have to say," I remarked as my eyes ran over the names of trainers who currently needed a ranger to take them through the Park. I was, quite frankly, bothered by the number of waiting trainers, even a bit guilty for they seemed to have been waiting for quite some time now.

"So," one of our secretaries began as I looked up, "if it woldn't be too much trouble--"

"Right." I nodded. "I'll grab one of those right now. The one who's at the top of the list, uh, Alice Card..?" I glanced at the name again to make sure I'd gotten it correct. "Yeah, her." Trainers who were already on a run and exploring one of the Park's various zones were top priority; no trainer could be left alone (for too long), without a ranger, at any given time whilst in the National Park. It was simply too risky, even if they did have strong Pokemon to accompany them.

"Send the details over to my RDA and let's hope she's not too far in," I told the secretary as I got up, slinging my brown bag over my shoulder. Meteor Valley was a wide and deep area at the bottom of two hills, with trees dotting its sides and caves leading to the insides of the hills. It'd be rather difficult to locate Alice within those rather extensive cave networks so I just hoped they hadn't ventured too far off.

It didn't take me very long to find Adrian, my Gallade, and within moments we were travelling through time and space, getting teleported to Meteor Valley. When we arrived, everything felt so different, new, somehow; this particular zone of the National Park wasn't one I regularly visited. Most of the runs I'd taken so far had been to the Gardens, Lakes, or Deckbi; it wasn't that this place wasn't popular with the trainers at all, it just so happened that I'd never been the one to take those runs, so this was something different, at least.

Eventually, I found my trainer and her Serperior facing off against what seemed to be a Golett. The secretary had noted with the information she sent over that Alice had been engaged in a battle with a wild Pokemon when her previous ranger had to bail, so after scouring the area and the caves and boulders, I'd heard battle cries and soon enough found myself watching a green slithering serpent and a rather beat-up and exhausted-looking Ghost-Ground-type. Said wild creature was laying face down on the ground when I entered the scene, and even the Grass-type looked mighty tired and bruised. Alice hadn't wasted another moment in throwing a Park Ball while the opponent was still down, the camo-colored orb soaring through the air and conking the entity on the head as it snapped open to engulf it with a familiar zap of red light.

The air was heavy with tension, I could tell; it was as though everyone was holding their breath, waiting for the moment when the sphere would stop shaking. "Hey," I said, making my presence known to the trainer and deciding to break the moment of deafening silence. "I'm Elisa Fleming, your new ranger." But then it was my turn to get cut off. One audible click that signaled the success of the capture attempt and all eyes were on the now-stationary orb.

I picked it up, tucking it safely in one of the pockets of my bag before turning my attention back to Alice, a wide smile plastered on my face. "Congrats! That must've been one heck of a battle, huh?" I gestured over to the rather drained-looking Serperior fighting to keep his head held high and proud. "Probably a good time to take a rest, I should think. Then, when you're ready, we can continue on. Where, or which way, were you supposed to be heading, by the way?"
