    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ivy had her hands full of dirt when her phone went off, ringing to the tune of a popular song among teenage girls on the mainland. Something called “Baby” or whatever it was. Either way, she knew Buzz had gotten a hold of her phone again. Last time it had been “Friday”.

She had to keep one hand supporting the plant she was relocating from the ground into a pot while she reached for her phone with the other. She picked it up carefully, trying not to get too much dirt on it, and hit the button quick, sliding the phone between her cheek and shoulder. If she kept her head mostly still, it shouldn't fall.

    “Ivy,” she answered.

“Hey, it's Chainy,” the voice replied. He was a fellow Ranger, another Elite.

“What's up?” she asked, while carefully moving the plant. She almost lost it, but it slid into the pot neatly, and she easily packed in the dirt around it. “Oh, and if Buzz is there, tell him he's an asshole for changing my phone again.”

She heard laughing on the other end, and then it was quiet for a second. A second laughter rang out then, more faint and muffled. “He's just grinning. Anyway, I was wondering if you'd be able to take this run that just came in. I'm due off at the Gardens, and Buzz is headed to the Lakes.”

    “Where's it to?”

“Deckbi.” There was silence. “Ivy? Are you still there?”

She sighed dramatically, making sure he heard it. “Everyone and their mom goes to Deckbi. Out of the last ten runs I've had, over half have been to that stupid heat trap. Everyone wants a Litwick, everyone wants a Volcarona. Ugh,” she grumped.

    “So that's a yes then?”

She just rolled her eyes, even though he couldn't see it. “Yeah, yeah, I'll be there shortly. If I get heat stroke and die, I'm coming back to haunt you.” She brushed her left hand over her black cargos to get the dirt off, then hit the end call button.

She heard him chuckling in the background before the line died. He knew she was going to say yes regardless of how much of a fuss she put up. She only rarely turned down a run. She figured someone had to do it, and it might as well be her. She couldn't complain though, the funding went toward her Pokémon to make sure they got what they needed.

Deciding that the re-potting and decorating the Park with their grown foliage would have to wait, she called over to Haji, her Espeon, who was sitting at the edge of the dirt patch. He had probably heard the conversation, and if not, he could always peek at her thoughts to know what was up.

“Sorry we have to go to that mountain again. I'd much rather go to the cold one.” Haji nodded, agreeing. You could always put more garments on. There was only so much you could take off. For her it was worse, since she liked extreme rangering, her clothes had to be thicker and more-covering so she didn't scratch herself up too bad. “Alright, let's get going.”

Haji drew in energy to himself, and then the air was shimmering around them as they warped to the Outpost at Deckbi. She knew immediately that they had arrived even before the sensation stopped. The thicker, muggy air revealed one of her least favorite places, and she had to stop herself several times for wanting to pull at the shirt that was sticking to her.

She just sighed at all the sun, taking a seat on the wood bench next to the Outpost. Haji, instead of jumping up on the bench next to her like he normally did, ducked under the seat and laid down by her legs.

“Chicken,” she said, and all she got back was a smug feeling through the mental bond they shared. He certainly wasn't dumb. She would be hiding in the shade if she could too.

With a smile, she settled back on her perch to wait for their Trainer, trying to ignore the heat.

“Focus...” A flame licked a little too close to my hand than I liked. Others spun at sluggish speeds somewhere around my arms and chest, threatening to create more of the angry welts that I had in various spots in the aforementioned areas.

“You’re quite close. It’s right here.” I stared unfalteringly at him. In front of me, Blades held his hands together in focus and stared blankly at an old, wizened candle in my hand. Nothing normally recognizable was visible within them; only a shimmering and ghostly light emanated from them.

An orb near my right shoulder jerkily shuddered downwards. Slowly it entreated its heat towards my upper arm, then my forearm, then dangerously close to my wrist. I gritted my teeth as the orb came closer and closer. Eventually, it alighted upon the mount of the candle. Wick fizzling, the candle ignited and the orbs disappeared with a faint, sour E flat.

I stood up straight and smiled. Blades popped a slight grin despite himself as well.

“You did it!” I closed our distance and hugged him. He flinched for a moment, but returned the unfamiliar gesture soon enough. Making sure not to burn his underarm, I pulled the hand holding the candle out from behind his back and put it between us. I had learned this training technique from a book that I had picked up in the medicinal store at Cianwood. It was quite old, but had many useful training methods that allowed for fantastic growth. According to the book, this candle that I now had would burn until I used an ice move on it. I struck a match on a flint rock that I had embedded into the wall near the doorway and melted the bottom of the candlestick with normal fire as I walked across the room to a lantern that hug from a small chain on the ceiling. I waved the match out, unlatched the door and carefully placed the bluish flame inside, where it would sit for show. I admired it for a moment.

The magic was broken when my cellphone began to screech in an alarming manner. I jumped and turned to see Blades in a fighting stance as well. I sighed. I still hadn’t gotten used to the alerts on my new phone. I pulled it from a zippered pocket in my cargo pants. I slid across the lock on the smart phone and an alarm popped up, informing me with a somewhat obscene message that it was time to go to my “FUUCKING PARK RUN”. Eh, I had been excited when I set it. I stepped over to the doorway of my apartment, I slipped off my tennis shoes and into some more practical hiking boots. I grabbed a vest that was laid neatly over the couch and slipped it on before pacing back into my room to grab some other supplies. It was going to be hot today. I loved hot weather, don’t get me wrong, but I HATED when it was humid. As I prepared, I hesitated over a sleek camelback that I took whenever I was going to hot places. Deckb wasn’t particularly known for hot weather, but it could get sweltering once you got inside the inner caves near the lava flows. Plus, any hike required water; a camelback was more of a convenience. I slipped it into a compartment in my backpack and threaded the drinking tube through its respective hole.

I was nearly ready. I pulled off my belt and replaced it with the rugged, neon green trainers belt that I took on trips. I hooked all of my Pokeballs on their catches after shrinking them. After that, I double checked my equipment in my backpack and shrugged it on. I was ready.

On my way to the door, I flicked off all the light switches and put my cellphone on its protective case and holder strapped to my arm. Finally ready, I turned around at my threshold. The small blue glow emanated through the doorway of the next room but everything was otherwise dark and silent. I opened the door, prepped the alarm system with a swift press of plastic, and locked the door behind me with Blades at my tail.

Pokemon were fairly rare in my neighborhood, so Blades and my other creatures were always admired by my neighbors when they caught me walking with one. As I hopped down my steps, I caught a glance of Ms. Clancey and her kid Marcus tending to some plants in their allotted patch of garden out front. I waved back and set off down the street. After only a minute of walking I turned into an alley to my left and felt my lower body begin to leave this spatial plane. With spores of iridescent pink, my body melted away, me still walking along like nothing. I felt tile under my feet just before my eyesight was lost to the whirl of teleportation miasma.

I refined vision in the main ranger outpost. Pausing for a moment for my body to fully reintegrate, I observed that Janice, the secretary, was caught up on the phone behind the counter. She motioned towards the teleportation machines silently and continued with her conversation.

“Yes, hi this is Janice from the National Park reservation. We were looking to place a mass order on Voice Disks for...” I caught a string of her conversation as I passed and ventured closer to the offices, past which were the teleporting machines.

I was familiar with all the Rangers myself. I knew several them as close, personal friends and most all of them as at least acquaintances. Buzz was bent over someone's desk, rigging some sort of trap. I decided to leave him be and waved at Chainy as I passed. He looked up for a moment and smiled in my direction before going back to whatever he had on his computer. When I got to a certain vantage point, I spied a page of google images set on Scarlett Johansen.

    Dat Chainy... I thought.

I finally made it to the teleporters and set one quickly for Deckbi. Stepping inside the cylinder I was ported in a flash, rather than gradually as with Pokemon Teleports, to a spot just outside of the outpost there.

I coughed immediately and spit up some phlegm from the sudden change from air conditioned fluorescence to hot and humid sunlight. I noticed the mountain itself right away. It towered above it its iron rich and there fore slightly red-tinted rock. The sun shone extremely hot. This made me smile a bit. I was looking for Litwick and its evolutions anyway, and what better weather for which them to come out than sweltering. Still, I scratched at the back of my neck uncomfortably. I hoped we would get inside the mountain soon; I burned easily.

I turned to notice the second thing. One of the rangers was sitting uncomfortably on the bench near the trailhead to Deckbi. I recognized her, but couldn’t remember her name for the life of me. I was horrible with names. I remembered her face though. I noticed that the moody Espeon that always was with her lay comfortably in the shade under the bench. I stepped forward towards her.

    “Hi, I’m Jake.”

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“There is movement from the Teleporter,” Haji said to her mind calmly, his ears idly flicking in that direction.

She looked over to the small booth building they had to house Deckbi's teleporter, and sure enough, a few seconds later the air hummed and a faint flash of light signaled someone coming through. She waited on the bench for the form to reveal itself, in case it was just another staff person coming to do some work.

A person came out of the little hut. He was fairly tall, with brown-blond hair. He had a vest, though not tailing to the ground like her red one, and a backpack full of supplies, which she was also lacking. She recognized him as another Ranger, though he hadn't been around a lot recently. A Gallade followed him, a while human-shape Pokémon with green blade-like arms. It wasn't Dual, Chainy's Gallade, but she knew the species in general were fierce, honorable fighters.

Ivy got up, brushing her long red hair back over her shoulder and straightening the canvas vest as he approached. Haji remained in his spot, not looking too bothered, like everything. Sometimes she thought that Deckbi could erupt and he wouldn't panic. “Quite comfortable are you?” she asked.

The purple cat simply blinked his eyes once at her, slowly, saying he had heard her but chose not to comment. He was a good parter, if not a bit quiet. She just shook her head at him. “Yeah, yeah.”

She turned back to the Ranger, now acting as Trainer for this run, just as he approached. He held out a hand. “Hi, I'm Jake.”

“Ivy,” she said, shaking the limb. “Haven't seen you in a while. I don't think we ever properly met.”

After exchanging pleasantries, she motioned for him to follow. Haji got out from under the bench shade and padded to her side to walk next to her, keeping both watch for danger and interesting things. She felt his senses reach out, so through him she could feel the area too. It was a lot more helpful than seeing sometimes.

“Alright, Jake, you know how this works. Hopefully it goes smoothly. The faster the better, though I'm not gonna rush you. I just hate the heat.” She grinned.

She went over to the new keypad they installed for Deckbi and put in her code to open the gate. In her amusement, she had picked a code that made beeps to the sound of a part of Live and Let Die. With a ding, the gate swung open for them to pass through. She waited for the rest and then closed it to prevent escapees and then started trudging up the path.

The scenery was much the same as the other thousand times she had been here. There were boulders and rocks of varying shapes and sizes dotting the path they were walking and strewn about the rocky landscape. Some of the ground was in rocky cliffs and had jagged edges, and there were a few patches of tough vegetation that grew near the base but not as they went higher. She didn't look at it much anymore, being here too often for there to be anything new.

A rumbling of the ground made her pause, just short of the split in the path when she'd ask the Trainer which way he wanted to go. The small pebbles hear her feet jumped and shook as the rumble came again. They waited a few more minutes for whatever it was to stop or show itself, and at Haji's instruction, she looked to the right as a large, rocky dinosaur-like creature popped over one of the rocky ledges.

It had slate gray plates covering it, topped by a drill-like horn at the tip of its nose. It was easily six feet tall, and Ivy caught sight of the cream-scale belly as it got onto the ledge next to the path. A ribbed tail swung behind the bipedal rock lizard, and it looked like it was itching for a fight. The first challenge had shown itself.

“Alright, Jake, here's number one. Want to battle this Rhydon?”

OOC: Mkay cool. I check these first thing and then regularly after that, though, so if you don’t really want to you don’t have to. Thanks for adapting. You’re very helpful. :)

She recived my outstreched hand and shook it with professional conviction, responding, “Ivy. Haven't seen you in a while. I don't think we ever properly met.”

I silently thanked god that she included her name in the adress. She probably sensed that I had forgotten. Or maybe her Espeon (Haji, I now remembered her calling it) psychically notified her of my unease at not remembereing her name. I had heard that the small gem placed on their foreheads acted similarly to Gallade and his evolutionary line’s horns. They could sense emotion and were used to amplify mind reading abilities.

We became acquainted for a moment before she turned and led me to the gate that (marginally) kept in the inhabitants of the Pokemon inhabited areas. She punched in the 20 digit code that all rangers had to memorize for access to the areas. I recognized the familiar tune that was beeped out for Deckbi. I had the name on the tip of my tongue. I was pretty sure that I had heard the heavy guitar riff a few days earlier on the radio. I dismissed it as she led me through.

“Alright, Jake, you know how this works. Hopefully it goes smoothly. The faster the better, though I'm not gonna rush you. I just hate the heat,” she told me as I walked past her into the area. I was reminded of the sun. I turned around and nodded to her as she closed the gate. Her long red hair glinted brightly in the harsh sunlight. She must be dying. That hair probably acts like a blanket. Just absorbs heat. I was reminded of why I got my hair cut before the summer. I brushed my hands through my comfortably short crew cut.

She turned and I allowed her and Haji to pass in front. We began out on the trail. It was extremely dry, which was better than it being humid, I guess. Still, my undershirt was beginning to stick to my body with sweat. The landscape was not desertlike, but similar. Rocks of varying size sat on our sides and a fairly clear path was laid out for us in front. Hardy, savannah plants stuck defiantly out of a few dry cracks in the ground, in which I expected the shade allowed a small amount of water to be. I knew that this was the last vegetation that could bear to grow on the path to Deckbi. The upper environments were just too harsh for any more plant life. However, I had seen some fascinating sulphuric springs that inhabited the deep caves of Deckbi. They were absolutely teeming with extremophiles. I had taken several samples from the caves when I went exploring before and had studied the processes of chemosynthesis on which the ecosystem of the pool grew.

Blades tapped on my shoulder. I glanced back to see his horn flash green. I recognized this as an indication of when he sensed movement in the earth. His psychcic abilities allowed him to detect even subtle vibrational, air flow, or chemical changes. It was quite useful on park runs. It was only a minute later when we reached a small fork in the path and the ground began to visibly vibrate. Smaller rocks jumped from the ground spontaneously. Ivy and I exchanged confident glances. We had dealt with Pokemon before and we were assured of our Pokemon’s abilities to fend off even larger Pokemon. My Gallade specialized in Physical moves and her Espeon in Special so we were covered if something decided it wanted ranger for lunch.

I was indicated by Ivy and Haji’s glances to our right. I followed their eyes in time to see the Rhydon coming straight at us from behind a large rock structure. It stopped before us and banged its tail happily on the ground. It glared at me with a challengein its eyes. It was looking for a battle. I sized it up. It was only a few feet taller than Ivy and me, fairly short for a Rhydon, so I suspected it was pretty young. It was nonetheless intimidating. Its tough body plates lined all but its ventral. Its horns were large and menacingly sharp.

“Alright, Jake, here's number one. Want to battle this Rhydon?” Ivy reminded me.

“You know what,” I said running my hands through my hair,” I would normally, but I don’t really want to deal with these guys right now. I need my health for later and they can be pretty destructive.” I pulled out a fleshy, rubber toy from my backpack. It was soft to the touch and squished, but further exploration found it quite durable, like tough rubber. I recognized it as a Slowpoketail, a synthesized fake of the original and common pokemon toy.

“I’m prepared if it doesn’t want to let us be,” I said as I held it up for her to see.

“I would normally,” he said, “but I don't really want to deal with these guys right now. I need my health for later, and they can be pretty destructive.” Ivy agreed, Rhyhorn were tough battlers, capable of destroying a lot of things. You had to be careful around them. Jake then pulled out a Slowpoke Tail, something she had seen in one of their promotions in the Park shop. “I'm prepared if it doesn't want to let us be,” he said as he showed her the escape device.

“Alright, let's keep on then.” She nodded to Haji, mentally telling him to watch it as they tried to continue on down the path.

They made it all of three steps before the wagging of the Rhydon's mighty tail shook the platform he stood on, making them stagger a bit. It called out to them, a rocky roar that sounded louder than it probably meant it to be. It took a few steps toward them, and Ivy sighed. She hoped all the Pokémon Jake wasn't interested in catching didn't act this way.

She made a motion for Jake to throw the tail in the wild Pokémon's direction. “Think fast, Rhydon,” she said, and he tossed the doll underhand.

She made sure it was distracted enough, and then she continued on down the upward sloping path, getting closer to the entrance of the mountain and the path that led on the more adventurous way up the side. They didn't see much of anything else as they continued on, and then they were upon the split in the path.

She was about to ask Jake which way he wanted to go when the ground loosened under her foot with shaking. She stepped back quickly, and a smooth brown head stuck out of the ground with a large pink nose.

“Oh, hi, Diglett,” she said while looking down. Then she turned back to Jake. “What about this one?”

The Rhydon seemed to be impertinent. We only managed a few careful paces before it roared thunderously and wagged its tail in protest. Ivy made a sign at me.

“Think fast, Rhydon,” she commented as I tossed it towards its mouth. It was almost immediatelly engrossed in the toy and allowed us to pass as if we hadn’t ever existed.

The path we took began on a slight incline and our bodies reacted tumultuously. even just a subtle angle upwards meant much more work on the muscles. Yes, we didn’t really feel the extra work, our nervous systems weren’t that acutely tuned to our bodily functions, but we did feel the output. It the sun our skin began what I expected to be a waterfall of sweat that would take place over the entire run. I saw Ivy began to flush a bit as wel, but women had better circulation; she probably wouldn’t start really sweating until a bit later. Plus, well, she had been a ranger longer than me.

On our way up, I paused for a moment. I removed a small disk from my backpack. It was labelled ‘LITWICK INT.’ in messy sharpie. I clicked open the Pokeplayer, slid it in, and clicked it shut. We kept walking up the hill; I guessed I would begin playing it after the next encounter, just to see what we get.

Ivy suddenly stopped before a split in the path and took a step backwards. I sidestepped to dodge her and stood next to her to see what had made her move back.

A small, brown head only a bit larger than a football popped up from the soil and stared at us suspiciously for a moment. I smiled. This Diglett was being protective. It was rare to see a Diglett outside when it was this sunny though. Their blood vessels were close to their skin and being in the sun for an extended amount of time made them weak.

“Oh, hi, Diglett,” Winter said to it and then turned to me. “What about this one?”

It was adorable to be honest. I stared at its fat, red nose and shining eyes. However, it wasn’t that powerful to tell the truth. Even its evolution, Dugtrio, only ad speed behind it. I just didn’t want one.

“No thanks,” I responded, pulling out another repelling device from my pack, this time a regular Pokedoll. I also silently placed a hand on the Pokeplayer in preparation of when we got away from the Diglett.

“No thanks,” he said, preparing another Pokédoll just in case. This one was the standard shape of a Clefairy, capable of inflating to double or triple its small, compact size.

They turned to go without another word, and the Diglett disappeared from where it had surfaced. She took a step, trying to plant her foot so she could turn around, but the Diglett popped up again. Frowning, she stopped and turned in place to face Jake, and then the small Ground type disappeared and reappeared again, only this time behind the Trainer.

“Oi, what's the big idea?” she asked it, only to have it poof once more and reappear to her right, in the middle of the path.

She sighed. “Probably going to have to use that doll.” Diglett had an ability called Arena Trap, allowing them to trap opponents from fleeing. This was due in part to their fast speed. They were able to make sinkholes in the ground at a rapid pace, effectively trapping someone and making it hard for them to move. She had her food caught in a sinkhole once. It wasn't pleasant.

Jake threw the doll toward the next hole Diglett popped out of, and its eyes grew big as it caught sight of the device. The mole Pokémon then popped underneath the ground again only to reappear digging right under the doll. After a few seconds, the earth opened up and the doll dropped down inside. They saw no more of the Diglett after that.

“So where do you want to go?” she asked as they started walking away, being careful where they stepped. She saw Jake put in a disk and hit play on his Poképlayer, and then the small cry of a Litwick echoed out into the area. Figured. Everyone wanted one of those. She didn't see what the big deal was. Between going into the mountain and staying outside, he probably had a better chance finding what he was looking for by sticking to the outside path.

Before they could get any farther though, one of the rocks on the path came to life. It sprouted arms and did a twist before rising in the air to float in front of them. Two eyes opened up on the rocky surface, both of them staring at the group evenly. “Geodude,” it said.

“Here's the next one,” she said, and then she waited for his decision.

OOC: DAMMAT. I thought I edited all of those out. (you notice that I only slipped up once though)

We turned to leave, but it seemed the the Diglett had other ideas. I was aware of its Arena Trap ability, but I had honestly never seen it in action. As Ivy tried to take a step, the dirt would collapse under her foot and she would be stuck. Any sort of moanuever was quickly brought up with double precautionary movements. It was annoying as hell but I had to admit, this little bastard was a tactical genius.

After putting up with the theatrics for a while Ivy turned to me and said annoyedly, “Probably going to have to use that doll.” I obliged her by tossing the Doll on the ground. Within a second the doll fell into a pitfall hole that was dug at lighning speeds by the small Pokemon.

I sighed with frustration. If all we were going to get were Pokemon that I both didn’t want and that didn’t like to see us go, this was going to be a long day.

“So where do you want to go?” Ivy commented as we continued.

“Well, right now I just wanna get inside.Isn’t there a cave entrance somehwere up here?” As I responded, I pressed the play button on my Pokeplayer and heard the first bout of eerie and crackling cries of Litwick, my target Pokemon for the run.

Before Ivy could respond, one of the small boulders to the side of our path rose up off the ground, growing arms and coal black eyes as it did. A Geodude blocked our progress up the mountain.

Ivy just rubbed her hands and said, “Here's the next one.” I sighed and held my Pokedoll at the ready, before kneeling down to look straight at the small imitation rock Pokemon.

“Mkay, Buddy-bud, you gonna let us pass?” I said trying to sound as soothing as possible under the combined frustration of unwanted Pokemon and overbearingly hot weather.

Jake replied that he'd like to go through the mountain, which was fine with her. If he was looking for a Litwick though, she didn't know how many would be actually inside with all the rocks. As far as she knew, they preferred the sun to soak in. Still, it was his choice, so she would lead on.

She heard him sigh at the sight of Geodude, pulling out a doll just in case. He got closer to it, leaning down a bit to be on its level while speaking to it. “Mkay, Buddy-bud, you gonna let us pass?”

Ivy had a few second warning of Haji's mental picture. She quickly darted out and grabbed part of Jake's backpack and pulled him backward just as the Geodude reached out with a rocky limb to hit him. “Hey!” she said, watching the rock Pokémon. She stepped in front of Jake in case the Geodude wanted to do something like that again, and she felt Haji ready one of his screens to intercept an attack if need be. “That wasn't very nice,” she told it.

In response, the rock just huffed, crossing its arms and turning its head to the side after narrowing his eyes at Jake. She guessed it didn't like to be talked to like a kid. She reached back for the doll Jake was still holding, and then she offered it to the Geodude. “I'm sure he didn't mean it.”

The rock eyed it suspiciously for a moment, and then he accepted, taking it out of her offering hand and floating off with it. Ivy wiped a metaphorical sweat drop off her head. Some Pokémon were certainly characters.

“Well, shall we?” she asked, dusting off her hands.

She led them down the side of the path that led into the mountain, taking one last look at the thin, dry grass that grew on the path a little farther up. Sometimes plains and rough-terrain Pokémon like Ponyta and Rhyhorn could be found there. Still, that wasn't their destination this time, so into the cave they went.

Haji took point lead as she got a flashlight out. She could see better through the mental bond that she had with the Espeon than the artificial light, but it was still nice to see with the eyes sometimes.

The cave was a little damp, but it was better than having the sun beat down on them. This tunnel was pretty wide, easily more than twice her arm span. She liked that better, as far as maneuverability went. The cramped corridors weren't very fun, especially if the Trainer had to battle in them. There were only a few rocks in the path on the floor today, which she was grateful of. It got old flailing around in the dark if you tripped.

Suddenly, a wailing cry echoed through the cavern, vibrating off the walls and ringing in her ears. She cringed for a moment, being a little sensitive thanks to Haxbat, and then she motioned for Jake to follow her in checking it out. They took a right at a fork in the path and came upon a wider area, the tunnel looking like a circle had been added to it, making it bow out on both sides.

In the center, on a small rocky seat, sat a Cubone, wailing a bit. It quieted upon seeing them, but she could still see emotion in its eyes. Its white skull helmet was pristine and shiny, not scratched up or cracked like some of the battle-heavy ones. This Cubone must be newer. It tapped its bone lightly on the pedestal it was on, absently.

“How about a Cubone?” she asked.

Ivy gripped my backpack and jerked me backwards in prediction of a sucker punch from the Geodude. In defense, she stepped out in front of me and said, “Hey! That wasn't very nice.”

The Geodud didn’t look very amused. She took the Pokedoll from me and knelt down, offering it to the small rock Pokemon. After a moments consideration it accepted the doll and floated off to play with it. Ivy straightened and mimed a forehead wiping motion. I smiled and thanked her before we moved on towards the entrance that I had mentioned earlier.

They made their way a little further up through the steep, mountainside path that took sharp half backs and spiraled generally around the mountain before turning into the dark cave maw. It was fairly wide, though not particularly. Ivy pulled out a flashlight and led the way in. I glanced back at Blades still following and proceeded behind her.

Almost immediatelly the temperature dropped and the air became wetter. I sighed in satisfaction. From the light of Ivy’s flashlight, I could see that the tunnel was cozy but not cramped; about as wide as the long side of a normal bed and a good deal taller than my head.

An eerie cry sounded out not too far away and Ivy hesitated for a moment, flinching. I guess she was a little afraid of bats or something. She led on to a fork and made a right. The tunned bubbled out on the sides and created a sort of clearing, though it wasn’t wuite roomy enough to have been called that. After examination, Ivy pointed out a Cubone sidding on a larger rock with a seat like area upon shich the Pokemon rested.

Seeing us, it halted its mumbling wail and looked sadly at us. Its shiny head and bone actually reflected light. It was definitely new to the Cubone way of life.

“How about a Cubone?” Ivy said. I pulled out another Slowpoketail and gestured towards it.

    “No thanks.”

Jake said no to the Cubone, and Ivy tried to calm it with her eyes. She guessed she didn't blame him, considering they weren't very good competitively, but still. The way he had denied it had been a little short and clipped.

“Alright little guy,” she soothed. “We have to go now.” She could see it start to tense and get worked up, and when she took a step back, it whimpered a little and tried to slide off its perch. She felt bad; she wanted to help it, but it was against Park policy to do so unless they were in immediate danger from some non natural means. It was to encourage the Pokémon to grow up as they would in the real wild and not to depend on humans. Even though it would help toughen the little Pokémon up, she still felt a little bad about it.

She took the Slowpoke tail from Jake and offered it to the little Pokémon, watching it accept the gift with a trembling limb. It curled the object into its chest and wrapped an arm around it. The other was still attached to its bone, but it curled that limb toward itself too. It didn't try to move after that, and they left the room.

They continued down the other side of the cavern, the rocky walls a little smoother to the touch than she anticipated. A cry sounded from far down, but she didn't flinch this time since it wasn't nearly as loud as the previous one had been. Her Crobat had intense training sessions sometimes, and he really put her senses to the test. Her hearing had been increased dramatically since they started, so she was super sensitive to any loud noises, much like the Cubone's wail.

Thinking of the bat made her want to release him, but since he was so large, he probably wouldn't fit in these paths very well. Besides, in the dark, a large, looming bat could freak someone out. She knew Chainy's Gallade wasn't fond of them, as well as the Ranger himself. Better safe than sorry. He could be very scary when he wanted.

Scratching at the right side of the wall made her slow and shine her flashlight near the spot. Small specks of dust and dirt fell out of a tiny hole in the wall, and as they waited, it got bigger. Soon, clumps of dirt and larger rocks were falling out of a wider circle forming, and then a Pokémon appeared.

At first all she saw were the spiky brown back coverings, but soon its yellow limbs were visible. The Sandslash popped out onto the path in front of them, shaking itself off as dust and dirt fell onto the floor. It scratched its claws on the ground absently before looking up at them with a curious expression.

    “What about this one?”

Ivy gave the little bone creature a sympathetic look and cooed it a bit before she attempted to take a step away. It got this child-like, adorable expression and began desperately trying to scoot off of the platform on which it was sitting. Ivy gave a moments hesitation and then turned to me with an expression with which I was familiar. It was the expression of a person who is in the middle of something but whose friend is crying their eyes out on their couch for some stupid romantic reason and said person must now go make some tea or something and spend the effort trying to calm their friend down. I understood it quite well; all of my friends come to me for romantic advice which is odd since I hadn’t been in a relationship in over two years. Aynyway, it gingerly accepted the deterrent and balled up on the ground, hugging it. I gave it a sad look and then exited with Ivy, this time walking abreast her.

The igneous (there’s a word I haven’t used since sixth grade) rock was making the slow and painstaking transition into the metamorphic stage. The walls became less rough. The stripes on them were close together and thin.

I glanced at Ivy next to me. She seemed a little distracted by something, mulling something over. Haji purred at her side, whether it was annoyedly, happily, or angrily I couldn’t tell.

Suddenly from ahead and to the right in the path a scratching noise induced Ivy to snap out of it and shine her light at the chips of rick being displaced by the rock. I felt a bit of excitement well up in my stomach; any Pokemon that could burrow through tough rock like that (technically it was sedimentary, well known as the weakest rock phase, but it was still quite durable) was pretty strong. Larger chunks displaced and finally a Sandslash calmly exited its homemade tunnel before stopping in the middle of the path and began idly scratching at the ground in front of us.

“What about this one?” Ivy commented.

“Not really. It’s quite strong, but its defense and speed just put it comfortably behind Donphan. I’ll pass,” I said reaching for another doll or similar...

“Not really,” he answered, comparing the Sandslash to a Donphan and pulling out another Pokédoll to use. She supposed they were similar, both being able to dig. She had heard of several Trainers using their Sandslash to dig up rare stones. If she remembered correctly, Donphan could sometimes smell them.

She shrugged. They had seen five Pokémon so far, but none of them struck Jake's fancy. His Litwick disk continued to play, but she wasn't sure if any of the little candle-like Pokémon were going to be able to hear it way down in the tunnels. Still, there was always luck one of them was just wandering around down here, and it wasn't her place to give her opinion on a Trainer's actions anyway (unless, of course, they were endangering the Park).

The Sandslash looked up at her, and she nodded to it. “Be careful on the west end if you're heading that way. Some Dugtrio collapsed three of the tunnels on accident.”

It made a sound that could've been a thank you, and then it burrowed into the left wall, digging through the rocks until it disappeared from sight. She listened to it for a minute, hearing the scrapes and cracks get further away. They were pretty fast when digging.

Then she motioned for Jake to follow her again, and they continued on down the cave path. They eventually came to a small room that only had one path leading out of it, a small tunnel at a sharp corner from them. It left most of the room open, and since it was a little dark, shadows danced along the walls.

Haji flicked his head in that direction calmly, like he did everything, and a brief curiosity from her mind link drew her attention to it. At first she saw nothing but blackness, trying to see without the light, since depending on it too long blinded you. Then the black moved, and at first she thought it was a huge spider. They creeped her out.

She shone the light over, and a rocky creature came into view. It had two main legs out front that stepped up and down sort of like an arachnid's. Another one was in back to stable it. It had spikey red rocks jutting out of it in places, and the whole thing was a dark blue stone set with two yellow eyes in the center of its face.

“What about a Boldore?” she asked, motioning to the Pokémon with her spare hand. The rock was one of the new discovered Unova Pokémon. This was known to be really sturdy with great skills manipulating the rocks around it. Surely it was a prize for any battler.

Ivy shrugged, gave me a skeptical look, and looked down at the Sandslash. It was rubbing its claws together, uninterested in us.

“Be careful on the west end if you're heading that way. Some Dugtrio collapsed three of the tunnels on accident,” Ivy told it. It nodded at her and made a polite sound before quickly clawing its way into the side of the tunnel next to us.

We waited there for a bit, listening to the sounds of the Sandslash’s progress grow fainter and fainter. But another sound would soon fade into nonexistence; my Litwick disk didn’t seem to have much of an effect on anything. The dripping and hissing sound of the disk was still present, but it had been long enough now that I knew it would only last maybe one more encounter.

Ivy made a motion and we began our trek once again. The path led to a room that seemed like it could pass for a living room if it was spiced up a bit. Throw a rug down, get a couch and TV, add some decent lighting and voila! The room was expanded further by a trick of the mind. The tunnel leading out of it was in a secluded corner of the room. I began to pace my own way to the exit when Ivy stopped me. I looked at her as she and Haji made a simultaneous head bobbing motion towards the exit, warning me of something. We crept slower and slower. I noticed a dim red glow in the dark.

Once we were close enough, I noticed a motion in the dark like the legs of a spider. Ivy and I shuddered simultaneously. I guess she shared the way that they irked me. Soon, though, our eyes adjusted and I realized that it was a small Boldore, levitating rocks and making small structures with them creatively. The small, blue rock looked up at us curiously as Ivy motioned towards it saying,

“What about a Boldore?” I looked down at it. It was kind of adorable in its own bulky, disjointed way. I had heard stories of their evolution, Gigalith, and how strong it was. Sturdy as a rock and the attacking force of a tank. I was sold.

“You’re kind of adorable, aren’t you?” I said to the Pokemon and then turned to Ivy and said, “I’ll take it on.”

Ivy stood to the side of the room as I jogged to the side opposite the Boldore. I tapped on my head for a moment, bringing up statistics and movesets. I searched the Pokemon that I had with me and came to a clear and easy decision.

“Go, Sphealia! Let’s start it off strong with Aurora Beam and Waterfall combo!” I shouted in the small room, tossing my Pokeball out onto the ground in front of me. Sphealia appeared in a flash and looked down upon the Boldore menacingly for a moment before getting straight on the attack. She pounced up, surrounding herself with water. Streamers of aqueous substance flicked up and across the room spraying Ivy and me with a mist of water. Then, directing her head backwards to the wall behind her, she barked loudly and released a bright pulse of icy energy at the wall. It bounced off the wall and Sphealia jumped up just in time to catch the momentum. Using the speed of the beam, she rode like an icy rocket towards the Boldore, diamond dust, as opposed to the previous mist, trailing behind her as a beautiful side effect.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Jake took a look at the rock Pokémon for a minute, thinking about his options. Finally he said, “You're kind of adorable, aren't you?” Ivy just blinked. Whatever floats your boat. Then he turned to her. “I'll take it on.”

She nodded, backing up toward their exit when the battle was through. Haji followed, finding a decent sized rock to plant himself. He laid down on the rock near her, watching the battle peacefully. This way they could stay out of the battlers' way. Last time she had been here, someone had accidentally caused a rock ledge to fall, and they had to teleport away or get caught in the rubble.

Jake pulled a red and white Pokéball from his belt and tossed it out, calling, “Go, Sphealia! Let's start it off strong with an Aurora Beam and Waterfall combo!”

A Walrein emerged in a beam of red light, her mighty tusks sticking out as she shook her head. Her white head-garb flopped around, and the walrus-like Pokémon wiggled her heavy blue body as she got her bearings. Then she started charging up her attack. Colors of all shades started swirling in her mouth. At the same time, she was surrounding herself with water. The little pool lapped at her feet and sprayed tiny drops outward as it rose higher and higher around her.

In this time, the Boldore realized it was going to have to battle. It took a look at its surroundings, seeing the rocky walls and the smooth floors with a few rocks scattered. Due to Sphealia's charging Aurora Beam, there was a bit more light, though the room looked a bit more like a disco party than a cave due to the flashing lights. Greens and blues and pinks struck the cave and the Boldore, but she couldn't tell if it was bothered by that or not.

Then, through Haji, she felt a hum of energy, and the rocks surrounding Boldore came more alive. Using Haji's sight, she could see the tiny spark of energy in them. That same flow moved them around the room, creating a sort of hazard on the field. She knew it was Stealth Rock, having seen that move used many times before. Once the rocks were alive, they would strike an opponent as they passed. She could see them twitching where they were now.

Ivy wondered a bit about Jake's Pokémon choice. Though Boldore was weak to water, Walrein was just as weak to Rock type moves. She had seen Pokémon go against bad typing before, but in a cave surrounded by rocks and against a pure Rock type Pokémon, she was a little worried.

After the rocks had been set, Walrein was done setting up her attack. She turned back to the wall behind her and unleashed the beam, the colorful rings streaming from her mouth in a wave in all different colors. Since she was so close, the force of the attack started to push her forward, toward Boldore. She was lucky the floor was mostly smooth; since she was so heavy, she didn't get momentum very fast.

She got up to a decent speed though, and the water around her made her into a type of liquid bullet. The Boldore didn't look phase though. It shifted its front legs up and down in anticipation, and then when the walrus was close enough, it pointed its head downward and moved forward a little.

The two forces collided, and through the force of the Headbutt, the Boldore shot the Walrein back toward her Trainer. It wasn't unhurt though, as the Waterfall technique had done a little bit of damage. It stumbled for just a second before stabilizing on its three limbs, moving back and forth just a little bit, almost like a crab. She could tell it wasn't a very mobile Pokémon, so it was probably going to focus on long range attacks.

Sphealia skidded back across the floor, flinching a little at the hard impact. Boldore was pretty much just a solid piece of rock. That couldn't have been too pleasant. She knew she would've had a headache.

Then, the rocks on the floor came to life. They shook in place for a second before shooting toward the Ice type at high speeds. Ivy could faintly see the energy in them through Haji. There wasn't much too them, which made it great for battles. If you didn't have to really concentrate on them, it didn't hurt to have them up.

The rocks came down on the walrus, and she cried out a little as she was pelted with stone in sharp jabs and heavy thunks. Finally the torrent stopped, and the rocks went still for the time being. That looked like it had hurt. Jake was going to have to be careful.

OOC: F, just to shake things up.

Sphealia shot at the small blue rock. I was confident that there was little that a little hunk like that could do to defend itself against a hulking, icy mass flying towards it at high speed. However, as the two Pokemon neared contact, it righted its legs in a preparational position and caught my Walrein on the skull with its rocky body in a powerful Headbutt. I was surprised to see that not only did the small Pokemon manage to hit back fairly hard, but it send Shpealia right back to my side of the room. I gasped slightly; I guess that this Pokemon’s rumored strength and defense were no myth.

However, something else was waiting for my Pokemon on its way back. I hadn’t noticed the Pokemon prepare a secretive Stealth Rock attack while I wasn’t paying close attention. Rocks from the surroundings hurled themselves viciously at my Pokemon and dug sharply into her sides. She flinched and clenched her eyes in pain as they bit into her body. Even with her Thick Fat ability, these rocks penetrated deep and caused much pain.

She stopped for a split second when she finally made it back to my side of the field and got her bearings. She shook her head to clear her mind and opened her eyes fiercely at the opposing Pokemon. I could always count on her to maintain focus and not let pain get in the way of her battling.

“Quick recovery just like always, Sphealia!” I said to her in encouragement. She gave a prideful glance back at me and then proceeded to go back to staring down her opponent while she waited for a command.

I calculated my different options and how I could use them to either retaliate to or counteract attacks. I had a distinct disadvantage in the battlefield. Sphealia, as a Walrein, wasn’t the most comfortable in a rocky environment. She functioned best in the icy grounds and frigid water flows of the Shoal cave and north Sinnoh, where they were known to be located. Besides her unsavory surroundings, we also had to worry about the Stealth Rocks. They limited our movements to long distance, unless I decided I wanted my Pokemon to get a sideful of knife-like rocks. I knew almost immediately a decent idea to get rid of both problems with one fell swoop. The only issues with the attack is that it wouldn’t be very effective against the Boldore and that it was difficult to pull off. However, I was confident both of Sphealia’s special attack strength and her ability to perform this attack.

“Let’s get a little more comfortable, Sphealia! Use Blizzard and ice this room up!” I shouted. My idea in this attack was to completely ice over both Boldore and the entire room with a smooth and hard-as-rock ice layer. If it worked, this would create a space for Sphealia that encouraged her attacks rather than hindered them, and hopefully cover and trap the affected Stealth Rocks so they wouldn’t be able to affect and limit Shpealia and her attacks. If it didn’t succeed in trapping the Stealth rock attack, then at least it was a special attack so it wouldn’t trigger them anyway. Hey there was even a small chance that I would get lucky and freeze the sucker.

Sphealia leaned back slightly and stared straight at the Boldore at the opposed end of the field as if to center her spray of ice on its opponent. Her eyes began to glow a dark cobalt color. Soon, an icy steam that matched the color of the eyes from which they were leaking evaporated from them; it was so cold that instead of floating upward as most gasses do, it sank to the floor as it was so cold that it was much denser than the air surrounding it. Once she was charged, she rocked back onto her pectoral fins and released a burst of ice and snow that sprayed in the general direction of the Boldore at the opposite end of the room The heavy mass of coldness, which glowed slightly blue as it flew, obscured my vision of the opposite side of the room as it was released. However, I did see what it did once it reached the opposite wall. Besides the small amount of cold that escaped out of the exit, the substance turned and flew backwards to coat the entire room with coldness. Just as I saw this progress, however, the cold in my eyes became too unbearable and I was forced to shield my eyes against the fierce gale and icy particulates...

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Walrein recovered from the after effects of the Boldore's sneaky rocks, and Jake didn't hesitate to praise her. “Quick recovery just like always, Sphealia!” he said, and the walrus looked pleased.

Jake was thinking up a plan in his head, so Ivy checked to see what the Rock type was doing. She wasn't moving much, but Ivy had expected that. Boldore's eyes were in motion though, and they kept close track of the blue Ice type, the yellow orbs shifting back and forth. She shifted like she was tensing for something.

Then, Jake seemed to know what he wanted to do next. “Let's get a little more comfortable, Sphealia! Use Blizzard and ice this room up,” he said.

Ivy tensed a little herself, wondering what the consequences would be if he froze the whole room over. Her thoughts immediately went to the Sandslash they encountered earlier and how she told it that some of the tunnels had collapsed. This mountain was old, and many of the inside trails had been carved out years and years ago. She didn't know how stable many of them were, especially if they were undergoing battle strain.

Still, it was too late to give any sort of warning, if it would be heeded anyway. Sphealia was already charging up her attack, bracing her body against the floor and gathering her energy. She faced the Boldore, and an icy fog streamed from her mouth, sinking down to curl around her feet and twist into the room. Then, she lurched her body backwards and released all of that pent up energy on the return lunge.

She fired somewhere in the Boldore's direction, hoping for damage. That made sense, though not a lot of it was going toward her. Instead, it gathered momentum and blew around the room with a harsh wind. The temperature plummeted, and in just a few seconds, Ivy could see bits of the walls and ceiling start to gather frost and form icicles. It hadn't been too cold down here to start, but the caves were a little damp, so the moisture on the walls would surely freeze.

She crouched down, pulling her hood up and the tail end of her vest over Haji, who had leapt off his rock and huddled at her side as soon as the Walrein started her attack. She covered them as best she could from the center of the exit path.

“Haji, cover the exits!” she shouted through their mind link, not knowing if she could be heard over the howling winds. She curled the make-shift covering around them as she felt Haji gather energy.

She couldn't see the entrance from here. The Blizzard had gathered in strength and colored the air in a white haze that she couldn't see through. Instead she glanced behind her. She saw the faint green-tinted outline of the Protect shield, preventing the opening from icing over and trapping them all inside. She would not let them freeze to death. Though her Pokémon, and even Sphealia, could probably damage the ice a bit, there was only so much they could do. Sure, it was the Pokémon's attack, but once it took form, it was its own force of nature. Ice was strong, and down here in the damp caves, it would be almost unbreakable.

She kept the two of them covered as she waited out the attack. Eventually the winds died down and things became visible again. When she took down the covering, the cavern had turned into a winter wonderland. It was even bright.

Every wall was covered in ice. There were icicles hanging from the ceiling in jagged points, and the floor had a thin layer of ice over it that looked too slippery to really walk on. Inches of snow were piled up in places, including around her boots. Thankfully, a semi circle of the floor around the two ways out was bare. Haji had been able to block them both after all.

“Jake, please be careful,” she warned, not really doing much good now. At least they wouldn't be trapped in here. Then she brought her attention back to the battlers.

Sphealia looked fine and almost happy, she thought. It was probably due to being in her natural environment. That was fine to places like Oktori, where the caves were always cold and ice-filled, but here, where the temperature was much higher, she worried a bit. They weren't really deep enough for it to be cold. One thing was good though. At least they weren't closer to the volcano. It had been acting up lately as it was.

Boldore had a thin layer of snow and ice on her, the Ranger saw, making her look like a misshapen snowman with two yellow eyes. Even as she looked though, the snow was falling off. Ice snapped off with a crack, falling to the snow in shards. She could feel a type of energy coming from her, and when all the snow had dispersed, it looked like her rock was more durable.

The Rock Pokémon then tested the ground. It was slippery, and she did slide back and forth, but she seemed pleased about this rather than upset. With another burst of energy, she watched as the stones around her body sharpened, the sides becoming more glossy and reflecting some of the light given off the ice prisms.

She then turned back toward the Walrein and concentrated. She saw the snow ahead wiggle and shake, and then snow-covered stones rose up to strike the walrus. They hit with a thwap, but Sphealia didn't really seemed that bothered since the stone part wasn't bared anymore.

The force that Boldore used to move the stones from the ground had forced her back, and she slid on the slick floor, hurtling backwards like on an ice rink. She slammed into the wall hard, though she didn't look hurt. A massive crack rang out, and Ivy flinched as a hairline shot up from the ground and into the ceiling a bit, the fracture very visible against the light-colored snow.

Her mind immediately went back to her first run, when she had gotten trapped in Meteor Valley's tunnels due to a cave-in. She wasn't doing that again. She hoped Jake would finish this battle soon or at least help save the room. He was a Ranger too, so she didn't really worry if they got separated, but since he was still technically a Trainer on this run, she felt some responsibility for him. She did for the Park too, and that was her main concern right now.

The torrent of cold lasted for only maybe ten seconds more before halting. I looked up from my cover behind my sleeve and shook bits of snow out of my hair. I was amazed. The entire room seemed to be encrusted in ice or similar. Heavy icicles hung comfortably from the frame of stalactites. the walls exuded a prismatic light and glowed, improving visibility more than I had predicted. The floor had transformed into a personal skating rink and my breath fogged in the frigid air. Sphealia looked alot more comfortable as well. She smiled with pride at her work before steeling her gaze back on the opponent.

“Jake, please be careful,” I heard Ivy say. I looked over at her to she Haji focusing on something, his red crystal glowing with psychic output. I glanced at what he was focusing on. A thin green barrier blinked out of my view just after I snuck a peek at it. My stomach fell inot my shoes. Of course, you should’ve covered the exits using Blades. I gave her a sincere look and then glanced back at Blades behind me. I had forgotten that he was out. He always followed silently along; never impeding unless necessary, never interrupting unless instructed, never acting unless ordered. He looked at me and I told him to protect what needed to be protected and prevent dmage to the park at all costs except the life of Ivy and me. I also notified him that after the battle, he was to Will o’ Wisp the room. He bowed slightly and then returned his gaze to front.

I turned back to the battle to see that the Boldore had been encrusted with its own layer of snow, but it took no notice. It seemed to be happily testing out the new turf. As it placed a hesitant foot on the ice it slipped a msall amount and took care righting itself. Once it was comfortable in the new environment, it held still and its energy rocks began to glow. The ice particles on its body cracked and slid off as if a subtle change in the size of Boldore’s body caused them to give way. Boldore stood higher as if proud of itself. Its rocks looked stronger and thicker.

Then, witha bright flash of light that seemed to reflect off the light exuded by the ice, the Boldore began to glow a bit. Its extremeties looked slightly more sharp and cruel, more like weapons and less like blunt limbs. It moved with agility as it executed the final leg of its attack.

Heaving forward with effort, it glowed and willed to life rocks near Sphealia’s side of the field. Just as Stealth Rock had done before, these rocks struck her dully on the side of her body. However, with the ice coverings, the rocks didn’t seem to bother her much at all. the effect was dulled greatly by the Blizzard effect. I smiled, but not for long. The force that the Boldore had exuded trying to perform that attack pushed it hard backwards, sending it hurling against the wall behind it. A hairline fracture raced up along it and into the ceiling a small amount. I flinched and gasped, and then sighed in relief as it didn’t seem to have much of an effecton the stability. I put the thought out of my mind but told mysefl that I would have to remember to correct the damage after the battle.

I focused back on Sphealia and commanded, “Perfect execution. Now hit it with a Brine!”

I decided that another single move was the way to go. Sphealia put more power behid the task of using one move as opposed to two or three in a combination. I decided against Surf for a few reasons. Firstly and most importantly, the room didn’t seem as if it could take a huge flood of water, the evidence for which being the gigantic crack in the wall behind my opponent. Secondly, the calculated damage for a Surf from Sphealia against a Boldore was 285. Looking at Sphealia’s special attack and the Boldore’s special defense, it was clear that this would be a fair risk of fainting the damn thing. Thirdly, I really didn’t want to get wet unless I had to.

Sphealia pulled back slightly and charged for only a secod before releasing a thick torrent of water ath Boldore. This water was more effective than that of a Water Pulse or Water Gun. It contained a high concentration of salt in it which made the attack both hit harder and burn the target wounds. The spray of blue-green water expertly flew as a laser to the target on the opposite side of the room...

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Jake shot her an apologetic look. That wouldn't fix the cave though, and they couldn't just leave it like this after. Well, moreover, she wouldn't leave it like that. It wasn't going to melt by itself fast enough to not affect the Pokémon living in the area, and since it was so different than the intense heat many of them were used to, they could get sick and possibly not make it. She wouldn't have that.

The icing over wasn't something one Pokémon could handle by themselves though, so unless Jake brought a team of Fire types, she was probably going to have to step in. She hated to tire out her own Pokémon (mainly Haxbat and Ambipom, seeing as how Haji had to be on standby for teleporting, though she was sure he'd want to help), but they couldn't stay here all day, and it was too much work for just one Pokémon.

She eyed the crack in the wall and hoped that was as bad as it got. She didn't need a cave-in on top of the icebox they were in.

“Perfect execution. Now hit it with a Brine!” the Trainer called. She fought not to roll her eyes. If his version of almost trapping them to freeze to death and making a bunch of Pokémon sick, then yeah, it was perfect. Beside her, Haji was silent, deciding not to comment, though she could tell he was a little concerned. She had to cheat through the mind bond though, because it didn't show on his calm look.

Sphealia went to carry out her Trainer's command. She pulled her body backward a little and charged as she let out a spray of water. It shot low, picking up sediments from the ground to make the attack more effective. The extra dirt and rock chips were designed to do more damage to an already weakened opponent. Boldore was a little hurt, but she didn't think it would affect her too much.

While the Walrein waited for a command and charged up, Boldore was busy too. She took a look at the snow-covered rocks around her, and deciding she needed more to work with, crashed into them. The medium-sized boulders shattered, sending rock bits scattering on the floor. She did this to three other rocks, giving her a small garden of ammunition.

Then, the Brine attack hit. There was a decent chunk of force behind it, so it sent the Rock type hurdling back toward the cavern wall again. She hit hard, and the whole room shook. The rock was dazed for a moment, but looked okay. Then it seemed to get an idea. With a concentrated look, she threw herself back against the wall again and again, and Ivy stumbled as the room shook even more.

The hairline crack from the wall trailed rapidly across the ceiling, splitting the room almost in two. It traveled right toward Sphealia. Then, the rock slammed itself one more time, and the snow covering the ceiling above the Walrein cracked and broke, sending snow puffs down onto the walrus. Rocks of different sizes came after, pelting her on the back and head and almost burying her under the weight.

But the rock wasn't done. She then concentrated on her debris she had created. The air hummed with energy as the rocks came to life. They shook a little before rising into the air, and they hovered still for a second before all of them shot at the Water type. They crashed into the walrus, and Ivy heard her cry out as she was mostly buried in rock from that, and that previous, attack.

Only parts of her were visible, buried in rock and ice and snow.

The Brine scraped against the icy floor and collected various sediments and debris. I smiled as this would probably increase the damage done. However, the fun stopped when it hit the Boldore.

Boldore was struck by the burst of dirty water and flew directly back into the wall behind it. The fracture from before rent across the ceiling. It halted precariously over the center of the field. I breathed a shaky breath.

But the Boldore had already noticed. It looked up at the crack and then turned around a smashed into the wall. The crack completed its journey to the other side of the room. It looked like the room was about to split in half. With one more smash against the wall, the Boldore managed to break the barrier of ice on the ceiling. It shattered and flew down at Sphealia along with a good amount of rock debris. I covered myself and backed up against the wall to avoid getting hit.

When I looked up again, Sphealia was almost completely buried in a rock and ice. But the rock had one more maneuver. The energy rocks on its back began to glow and rocks that covered Sphealia flew up into the air. It then made a crumbling noise and the rocks fell with a tremendous THUNK back on Sphealia. She let out a small and pitiful cry of pain.

“Are you still there?” I called out. She responded with a bit of a cracked bark. She was hurt, but she was definitely still concious. Relieved that she was still kicking, I faced the next biggest problem at hand. How was I supposed to retaliate? Sphealia’s movements were too restricted to really do anything physical, but any special moves that would be powerful enough to free her, would surely cause a cave in. However, there could be a way to prevent that.

I had witnessed Haji use her Protect to cover the entrances to great success. What if I used two Pokemon to protect the room? It would have to be the only way.

I tapped on another Pokeball at my waist and a hulking figure appeared next to Blades. My Machamp flexed his impressive muscles and posed with all four arms curled in different directions. I held back a roll of my eyes and directed them.

“I’m going to need you guys to protect the room with Protect. Blades, you handle the crack in the ceiling. Machamp, hold the back was steady with your Protect.” I pointed as I talked, directing them to which points on which they were to focus. They both nodded and turned to face their specific area, crafting a mystical shield with their power.

I looked back at Sphealia, or the small amounts of her that peeked out from behind the pile of debris. I breathed once and then gave the command.

“Wash yourself free with Surf!” I commanded. I purposely didn’t look at Ivy, but I could feel her disdain and annoyance emanating from where she stood with Haji. If this didn’t work, it was her job to clean up the mess.

As water began to well up under Sphealia, I backed up and turned back to look at Blades and Machamp. They both were sweating and exerting all their effort into holding the Protects strong. I glanced at the glowing flims that surrounded the affected areas and then returned to the angry pool of water that was now a sizeable amount around Sphealia. Then she launched herself at the other side of the room, willing the water to flush at the Boldore. I was worried how much damage this would do, but it was too late to think about that now.

I hoped and tried to ignore that nagging feeling that I was going to have to deal with Ivy’s complaints if this didn’t work out. I closed my eyes...
