    Ranger Makina Auran

    *~~~~~~~~~*

Today, thankfully, was not a day for paperwork.

Last night, a strong storm had struck the outer edge of the island. While mainly the eastern side had taken the brunt of the damage, it had still left a mark in those areas. Due to the excess water and strong winds, three zones needed to be looked over for damage control and rescue if needed, though the latter was unlikely. To better cover the areas, Rangers split off on their own with their partners.

Makina, having been assigned to the Woods, was currently in the process of clearing a main trail. The roadblock, a thick oak tree, had fallen down directly in the path. The job was going by fairly smoothly; two Pokemon were working together to break down the object and move out of the way. A large yellow draconic creature with axe-like tusks was slashing away at the trunk, while a midsized green and white hued Pokemon moved the chunks off to the side with psychic power. “Rezi, Aria, are you two all right to continue or would you like to take a break after this?”

Both the Haxorus and Gardevoir shook their heads, the second speaking for both of them. <We can keep going, but something seems strange. Where are all of the Pokemon?>

“They're likely hiding.” Makina gave a half-shrug in response as she looked further down the path. Thankfully, there didn't appear to be any more roadblocks in sight. That didn't mean their work was done just yet though. The Park was still open to the public today, so they had to make sure that all areas were clear for travel. “The storm probably scared them, and both of you are not exactly natives to this area. If you sense anyone injured though, let me know.”

Aria gave an uncharacteristic snort at this. <I am not likely to just walk past a Pokemon in trouble, you know that,> she stated a little coldly over their link, but didn't slow in her work. Already most of the job was done, just a few more chunks had to be broken down.

Before Makina could respond, she was interrupted by a sudden ringing emanating from a case strapped to her belt. Taking the cellphone out and giving a quick look at the number, she flipped it open. “We're still working over here. What is the problem?”

“You have a Trainer scheduled to enter the woods within the half hour,” Susan, one of the head secretaries, replied over the phone. “You're closest to the outpost, are you at a stopping point?” “Somewhat...” Makina gave another look at the tree and her partners, with Aria giving her a short nod, “I can head out right away though. Can you tell them I'll meet them at the gate?”

“Done and done. I'll send the Trainer's information to your PDA right now. The last Ranger said that she acted strangely on her last Run however, so may want to keep an eye on this one.” With that, Susan promptly dropped the call.

“Wonder what she meant by strange,” Makina muttered as she put the phone back in the case. She would just have to read the report on the way- even by walking quickly she would just barely make it in time to meet this Trainer. “Aria, will you and Rezi be all right heading back on your own once done here?”

<We will be fine, just go,> Aria responded, shooing away the human with her wispy arms. <Rezi can handle anything out here, and as long as you're conscious I can lead us back to you.>

“I'll make sure not to hit my head on anything,” Makina said with a touch of sarcasm, already briskly walking away. Hopefully her Trainer wouldn't arrive early.

"Back in the park..." Jessie trailed off. There were too many bad memories associated with this place. Thankfully, they were a time of the past. Hopefully.

Jessie twiddled her thumbs as she waited at the outpost. After being abruptly dropped off at the front gates, Jessie managed to wander to a small and presumably empty building. Surprisingly, the door was open, and Jessie sat down in a chair to escape the light rain that was blowing through the area.

At least she wasn't back at the power plant. Traveling through the Woods instead would be easier on both her and her Pokemon. She couldn't deny that she was massively under-prepared for her first voyage, but now, she was ready. A few new Pokemon and a few new moves is all it takes to become one of the greats.

Jessie glanced across the room to see her soggy Arcanine pouting in the corner. This damp weather always seemed to put him in a deep depression. It was against his natural behavior, as Arcanine generally seemed to be very brave and adamant, but Jessie could understand why this boggy weather affected him so greatly.

"Don't worry, Ark. As soon as we're out in the forests, you'll be sorry that we didn't come earlier!" she said. Arcanine have a brief smile before resuming his melancholy stare out the window. "That's strange," Jessie thought, "Arcanine is never like this. Maybe there's something bad going on in the forest?"

It was too late either way, as Jessie had already paid the entrance fee and was ready to go. "You'll be fine once we get there," Jessie reassured.

She wasn't sure if she was early or if her ranger was late, but Jessie was prepared to leave regardless.

    Ranger Makina Auran

    *~~~~~~~~~*

About halfway to the Outpost, a light drizzle began to fall down upon the area. Silently cursing to herself, Makina quickened her pace. While there was hardly not enough rain to start pulling out her collapsible umbrella or even dragging out the standard poncho that most Rangers kept stashed away, if it came down any harder there wouldn't be any Pokemon walking about at all. Thankfully, the drizzle lightened up considerably by the time she approached the small building up ahead.

Finally having a moment to take a look at her PDA without risking the device getting wet, the Ranger stepped under a nearby overhand and took a quick look at her Trainer's basic info. The girl's name was Jessie, and she was entering the Park with a well-rounded team-including a Porygon-Z. Makina was genuinely surprised- the creatures were extremely rare, and she had yet to even see one face-to-face. Still, she had yet to see anything else out of the ordinary. Scrolling to the bottom, she finally noticed a footnote added on at what had to be the last minute.

According to the note, Jessie had collapsed during her battle against a Porygon. There had been no injuries on the girl though, and after a quick examination at the medic station she had been confirmed as healthy. A strange occurrence, one that had caused her Ranger to leave an advisory on the Trainer's file in case the event happened again.

Upon entering the Outpost, the first noticeable difference was that it was practically empty. The small desk in the corner was deserted, though a muffled sound in the back suggested that the secretary on duty was busy with filing. An Arcanine was currently stationed by a window facing the Woods, staring through the panes and sitting as still as a statue. Sitting patiently nearby was a young woman who could only be the Pokemon's Trainer.

“You're Jessie, right? I'm Makina, and I'll be your Ranger for today,” Makina said, greeting the Trainer. “I hope you weren't waiting too long, this area is currently trying to recover from last night's storm so we're all a little disorganized.”

Once all introductions were made, Makina led Jessie over to the Woods entrance, quickly unlatching the gate and motioning for her to head in first. Once everyone was safely inside, she secured the gate once more and turned to her Trainer. “Anything in particular you were interested in? While this weather isn't exactly normal here, none of the Pokemon are likely to choose new homes just because of it.”

A sudden movement off to the side caused the group to look over, trying to see what had caused it. Latched on to a nearby tree, an insect-like Pokemon was flapping their yellow wings in a vain attempt to get the appendages dry. The wings had a distinct pattern, and even though its back was turned to them Makina knew that a long proboscis would be sticking out from the creature's face.

“Not a terrible way to start things out. Care for a Beautifly?” the Ranger asked Jessie.

Jessie wasn't certain how much time had passed since her arrival to the woods, but she finally heard a commotion near the entrance to the outpost. Peering around the corner, Jessie spotted a young woman who couldn't have been much older than she was. The woman's outfit reminded Jessie of a feminine version of the clothes of her previous rangers, so Jessie assumed and hoped that this would be her ranger at last.

Jessie gave a brief smile to the slightly damp ranger who had just entered. "You're Jessie, right? I'm Makina, and I'll be your Ranger for today," the girl said, returning the same smile. "I hope you weren't waiting too long; this area is currently trying to recover from last night's storm so we're all a little disorganized."

"It's not a problem at all, I understand completely," Jessie said, standing up from her seat in the outpost. "Nice to meet ya!" she said cheerily.

After some miscellaneous small talk (how awful the weather was, where Jessie was from, etc.), Jessie and Makina left the outpost. Jessie followed behind her ranger as she lead the way to the gate. Looking past the metal bars, Jessie saw into the vast forest. Towering pines reached high into the clouds, and Jessie wondered how such a giant part of the park had so little visitors. It was calm and tranquil, which was just what Jessie was needing after her previous venture into the park. Regardless, this would surely be a getaway from the party-life Nimbasa City, Jessie's current home as the Nimbasa City Gym Leader.

“Anything in particular you were interested in? While this weather isn't exactly normal here, none of the Pokemon are likely to choose new homes just because of it," Makina asked as she pulled a latch on the gate, opening the massive doors.

"Not really," Jessie said. "I guess that I'm looking for some of the more exotic normal type Pokémon that we can catch here, like Smeargle or Stantler. Cyber, my Porygon-Z," Jessie said with pride, "is one of my newest additions to my team, and I've been looking for more normal types for Cyber to play with." Jessie flashed a smile as she stepped through the gate, with Makina directly behind her.

Before they could even move into the trees, a magnificent butterfly fluttered onto the bark of one of the first plants in the Woods. Jessie instantly recognized the Pokémon as a Beautifly, one of the prettiest bug Pokémon she had ever seen.

"Not a terrible way to start things out. Care for a Beautifly?" Makina asked, gesturing towards the Pokémon.

"Beautifly is gorgeous, no doubt, but I think I'll try and leave her here peacefully. I don't think I could train her properly anyway," Jessie explained. "Let's try to run away from her, if we can. If not, I packed several Pokedolls we can use as well."

    *~~~~~~~~~*

Despite taking a moment to appreciate the Pokemon's appearance, Jessie didn't appear too interested in battling it. “Beautifly is gorgeous, no doubt, but I think I'll try and leave her here peacefully. I don't think I could train her properly anyway,” she explained.

Makina gave an understanding nod in response. Earlier, Jessie had mentioned that she was the current Gym Leader in Nimbasa City. If memory served, the Gym there was home to Electric types; such an environment would likely make the partial Flying-type nervous. “Let's head further in, then. We'll start out on the main trail, but if we pass any side paths the option is always open for exploration.”

Unfortunately, it seemed as if Beautifly had other plans. After finally managing to somewhat dry out its wings, the Bug-type flitted over to block their path. While it didn't make any aggressive moves towards the nearby humans, the determined glint in its eyes hinted that it was not going to just let them pass either.

Seeing that Beautifly was going to be stubborn, Makina held out a hand to accept a Doll from Jessie. Once the toy was in plain sight, the wild Pokemon gleefully fluttered forward and grabbed the plush Caterpie before the exchange could be completed. Without another word Beautifly flew back into a nearby cluster of trees, clearly satisfied.

“They're getting a little too attached to those toys,” Makina grumbled mostly under her breath while shaking her head. Either way, the way was clear for them to move on.

The main path was relatively untouched from the storm, at least this close to the front gate. While a few trees were bent at an unnatural angle and branches littered the area, nothing obstructed the road to prevent access. Every now and then there was the sound of shuffling leaves as something foraged around, but the noise would die down as the group grew closer. Rangers were hardly the only ones at work today- the natives had their own repairs to do.

This routine continued on for roughly fifteen minutes, until a loud crack split the air off to their left. Judging from the sound (and the surprised squawk that followed it later), something had tried to roost on a damaged branch and the limb had snapped off from the weight. Sure enough, as they stepped off the path to investigate they were greeted by the sight of a very confused avian creature. The Pokemon possessed a mostly earthly plumage, save for the borderline pink wings it possessed, and it was currently trying to reorient itself after what had to be a shocking fall.

“That branch must have been waiting to fall down any second if something as light as a Spearow managed to break it,” Makina remarked. At least the Flying-type didn't appear to be hurt, just shaken.

“Let's head further in, then. We'll start out on the main trail, but if we pass any side paths the option is always open for exploration," Makina said.

Jessie nodded. "I don't really know my way around these parts, so I'm trusting you to guide me!" she whispered, as she didn't want to disturb the Beautifly. A peaceful parting would be ideal for Jessie so she could save her Pokedolls for later, but it seemed as if the Beautifly wasn't prepared to end this.

"Alright, here you go," Jessie sighed as she handed the doll to her ranger. Makina tossed the Caterpie doll into plain sight, which apparently made Beautifly cheer with excitement. The bug Pokémon fluttered away after snatching up the Caterpie doll.

Jessie heard Makina mumble but couldn't discern what she had said. Jessie figured it didn't matter much or she would've explained herself louder, but she did seem a little frustrated about the Pokémon. Jessie shrugged it off.

After a while of walking through the Woods, Jessie heard a sharp snapping noise. There had been lots of simple rustling of the leaves and shaking of the branches, which Jessie assumed to be either the gentle breeze or the scampering of various Pokémon, but this one seemed different. It sounded like an entire tree had been uprooted and fallen.

"Jeez, that storm must've been crazy!" Jessie exclaimed as she searched for the source of the sound. Jessie noticed a very shaken Spearow and assumed that it must've been the cause of the crash.

“That branch must have been waiting to fall down any second if something as light as a Spearow managed to break it,” Jessie's ranger said.

"Yeah," Jessie nodded, "and I'm sure that this branch isn't the only one that's like this. We better be careful. Fearow is a ferocious Pokémon, but I just can't see it fitting into my team. Let's try and leave it here, but I can toss another Pokedoll if it wants to fight."

OOC: Sorry I didn't have this up last night, slept for almost a full twelve hours after logging from AIM X.X

    *~~~~~~~~~*

“Yeah, and I'm sure that this branch isn't the only one that's like this. We better be careful,” Jessie said in reply. “Fearow is a ferocious Pokemon, but I just can't see it fitting into my team. Let's try and leave it here.”

Spearow lay on the forest floor, obviously dazed from its long fall. Once it finally regained its bearings, the small bird looked over at the two and gave a questioning chirp, almost as if it was asking them if they had any idea just what had happened.

In response, Makina pointed over to the collapsed branch just underneath the Flying-type. “Looks like the tree didn't agree with you landing on it. Try to avoid any damaged areas for now, all right?” she said not unkindly.

The Spearow ruffled its feathers in annoyance, clearly unhappy that it had been embarrassed in such a fashion. Still, it didn't decide to vent its anger on them. After testing each wing by carefully stretching them out, the wild Pokemon took off to the skies.

Surprisingly, their next encounter found them instead; rather, it nearly ran into them. A bipedal Pokemon tottered about, narrowly avoiding a tree as it headed forward. The creature possessed swirls for eyes and even had a matching pattern adorning the ears, with short tan fur covering its body. While it possessed spots dotting its hide like the rest of its species, there was something odd about this one. Instead of red spots, these were a dull green.

“The crash must have attracted it over here,” Makina said. “That or it's ambling about, hard to tell with Spinda.” She was almost tempted to take a picture; while the change in color likely gave the Pokemon better camouflage in this area, it stuck out like a sore thumb when walking around dead foliage like it was now.

OOC: Sorry this took so long, but I've been really busy and tired and stuff. PROMISE I'LL BE FASTER IN THE FUTURE.

    IC:

Jesse stifled a laugh as the Spearow stood up from its perched position on the ground. The bird seemed as if it had hardly registered what had happened, much less why there were two humans standing in front of it. The bird made a questioning squawk as it regained its footing, but Jessie and Makina simply pointed to the fallen branch.

"Looks like the tree didn't agree with you landing on it," Makina said with a smile to the Pokémon. "Try to avoid any damaged areas for now, all right?" Jessie nodded in agreement with her ranger as the Spearow blankly nodded and fluttered off. Jessie was thankful that the Spearow decided not to attack them, as she had heard they were some of the most ferocious Pokémon when provoked. This Spearow seemed more confused than enraged, so it simply let the two pass by without any trouble.

"What's next? I was looking down that path, and I think that we might--" Jessie began before she was cut off by a Pokémon that had wandered into her path. "Woah..." Jessie murmured as she stared at the Pokémon. The beast was stumbling around like a drunk and blind woman, but something about this Pokémon made Jessie think it was far from ordinary. She had read about Pokémon that looked similar to this (she couldn't recall the name at the moment, something like Spinsa? Spinder?) but she had never seen one with these dark green swirls dancing across its body. They were generally a bright orange, and Jessie wondered if there was something special about this Pokémon's coloring, or if it was just a coincidence.

"The crash must have attracted it over here. That or it's ambling about, hard to tell with Spinda," Makina said, gesturing towards the stumbling Pokémon. Having remembered the name of the Pokémon, Jessie pulled out a single Pokeball from her backpack.

"Either way, I'm glad we found her," Jessie muttered as she held the Pokeball to her ear. The ball seemed to shake with excitement, and Jessie smiled because of it. "Cyber seems to like the Spinda. Guess this means that we'll be having a battle then!" Jessie exclaimed.

She breathed in calmly as she swapped the Pokeball out for another. "Stay calm, Jessie," she thought to herself. This would be the first battle with a wild Pokémon since her last encounter, which was... messy. A few ambulance rides and psychological evaluations later, Jessie was told she was free from the beast that infected her. However, Jessie knew this wasn't the case. She had managed to stop the beast from escaping from her head and taking control of the real world, but the cage was thin and barely contained the beast. Keeping calm during an important battle like this would be essential to maintain control.

"Okay, Electivire, come on out!" Jessie cheered as she tossed her Pokeball to the ground. After the all-too-common explosion of light subsided, a goliath Electric Pokémon stood a few feet in front of Jessie, creating a larger gap between herself and the Spinda. Electivire had been a gift from one of Jessie's first friends after leaving Johto for Unova, and Jessie had grown just as attached to Electivire as he had grown to her. They were a team, and she could always rely on him for an intense battle.

Electivire glared at Spinda, his eyes turning a piercing and icy blue. The Electivire had inherited this trait from his father, who was a Shiny variation of the species. Shinies are very rare for all species, but particularly members of the Elekid line. Elekid have a tough beginning to life, often being captured by humans and given Everstones so that they may supply electrical power as quick as possible, so it is fairly rare to find any evolved forms of Elekid, especially if they're Shiny.

"Time to get cracking! Start us off with a Thunder Wave to slow down Spinda! A slow opponent is a crippled one, and this should make the entire battle easier!" Jessie exclaimed to her Pokémon. She doubted that Electivire needed the explanation, however, because he was fairly used to running this routine back in Nimbasa. It was a common gym technique, and Electivire utilized it perfectly in the normal battling situation.

"Next, try dealing some damage with Brick Break!" Jessie shouted. Electivire nodded and charged towards the Spinda. His hands were coursing with the electricity of his Thunder Wave, which would hopefully paralyze the Spinda on contact.

Jessie could do nothing else but breath deeply and watch. This was not going to end up like last time.

    Ranger Makina Auran

    *~~~~~~~~~*

Jessie seemed happy to see that such a strange Pokemon had stumbled upon their path. She reached into her pack for something, muttering words that Makina couldn't quite catch. After pulling out a Pokeball and holding it to her ear, the Trainer gave a small smile. “Cyber seems to like the Spinda. Guess this means that we'll be having a battle then!”

Makina gave a short nod and stepped back, giving Jessie plenty of room to work with. The exchange between Pokemon and Trainer had been odd, but Porygon-Z were also odd creatures as well. Perhaps they did have some way to communicate while still stored away in their Pokeball... that was hardly anything to worry about for now, though. She had a battle to watch, and one that promised to be interesting at that.

Surprisingly, Jessie didn't call out Cyber; instead, she fished out another Pokeball instead. For a moment, something akin to worry flashed upon the Trainer's face. This was quickly replaced by growing confidence. “Okay, Electivire, come on out!” Jessie called out, tossing the sphere forward.

A large Pokemon materialized onto the field, looking ready for battle. The creature was covered in a thick yellow fur coat with black stripes adorning his body, with twin tails that looked almost like power cables sticking out and curving upwards. Instead of possessing the same dark red eyes that most of the species possessed, however, this particular Electivire had ones of a chilling blue hue.

“Time to get cracking! Start us off with a Thunder Wave to slow down Spinda! A slow opponent is a crippled one, and this should make the entire battle easier!” Jessie called out. This appeared to be a common tactic for them, for Electivire immediately began to bristle with electricity and shot the field forward. The current struck the still-oblivious Spinda, causing the Pokemon to cry out in surprise.

The wild Pokemon whirled about, looking for its current antagonist. When it finally spotted Electivire, Spinda's normally carefree grin turned into a grim frown, and then opened as the Spot Panda Pokemon let out an earsplitting scream. The sound-waves were nearly visible with their force, and Jessie's Pokemon cringed as the noise assaulted him.

As the scream died down, Jessie called out her next command, “Next, try dealing some damage with Brick Break!”

Electivire was all too happy to act, clearly annoyed by Spinda's prior choice of attack. In a few short bounds, the Electric-type reached his target and landed a sharp judo chop on the wild Pokemon, making it cry out once more and stagger in pain.

Makina watched Spinda's reaction, giving a small frown as she thought. Something was off about this situation; After taking such a super-effective hit, most Pokemon would try to create distance between themselves and their aggressor. Spinda had yet to move, and was in fact smirking at Electivire. “Careful, Spinda is up to something-”

At that moment, Spinda chose to act. Its front paws began to glow with a light blue aura, and the Normal-type gave Electivire a strong shove to push the Pokemon away. In doing so the glow transferred to the Electric-type's form, then promptly faded. Other than appearing dazed, Electivire looked unhurt by the assault. Spinda, on the other hand, began to emit a few electrical sparks from its body.

“I think that was Skill Swap,” Makina said to Jessie, recognizing the signs of Motor Drive. “I'm not certain just what ability Electivire received, but using Electric attacks on Spinda now would be unwise.”

Jessie watched with a grin as she saw her plans unfold before her eyes. The Thunder Wave attack had hit the target spot on, causing Jessie's smile to widen further. Though she didn't like seeing Pokémon in pain at all, really, she knew that this had to be done if Jessie wanted to capture Spinda.

However, Jessie's initial fear that the Spinda was in pain soon became a reality. A sharp, piercing scream ripped through the air. The song sounded almost hallow, as if it was just a fraction of something horrifyingly beautiful. Regardless, Spinda wasn't the best singer, and the scraping sound waves sent almost visible ripples through the air. The notes rode across the small gap until they encountered Electivire, which caused the gales of the screech to begin slicing at Jessie's Pokémon. The attack wasn't very strong, but it definitely was abrasive. Even Electivire's massive body was rattled around in the gust.

"It's okay, Vire! You can handle this!" Jessie exclaimed. "Keep on with the plan!"

Electivire stumbled around, clearly confused by the attack, but he soon regained his composure. Though Jessie wasn't able to recall a moment when Electivire had ever had to face a foe that utilized sound as a means of attacking, she knew that Electivire was able to adapt. He would be able to use Spinda's battle-style and, more importantly, her weaknesses to make this battle go by a lot quicker.

Jessie hardly noticed when her Electivire's Brick Break had connected with the Spinda. She heard a sharp cracking noise as Electivire's super-powered fists smashed into the Spinda. The hit was hard, but Spinda hardly seemed to notice she had been attacked. Jessie wouldn't have been sure if the attack connected if it weren't for Spinda's slight whimper and a stumble. Spinda was almost always oblivious to its surroundings regardless, but the fire in her eyes had faded from before. Instead, a sinister smirk crept onto the Dizzy Panda's face.

The smirk made Jessie uncomfortable, as if Spinda knew something that Jessie didn't. "Okay Electivire, pull out of Spinda's range and dodge whatever she tries to throw at you!" Jessie warned. However, Electivire was a slow mover. Before Electivire could comprehend his trainer's orders, Spinda had managed to wobble her way towards the massive Electric Pokémon. Spinda's stubby hands radiated an intense blue aura for a moment, which reminded Jessie of a Lucario she had seen long ago, and Spinda gave a gentle tap towards Electivire. Neither Pokémon seemed to be hurt, and Electivire just seemed to be a little confused at the entire situation.

"I think that was Skill Swap," Makina explained. "I'm not certain just what ability Electivire received, but using Electric attacks on Spinda now would be unwise."

Jessie nodded her head before hesitating. "Are you sure those aren't just signs of paralysis?" she asked, but her question was soon answered. The paralysis' electric current was smaller but more frequent and also a light yellow color, this new ability turned the already dancing sparks blue, presumably from Electivire's sharp blue eyes. However, this fantastic display of lights gave Jessie an idea: with both Paralysis and an official type combination, was there a possibility that Spinda would be just as susceptible to Ground moves as any other Electric Pokémon.

"Okay, Vire, keep it coming," Jessie shouted to her Pokémon. "Keep as far away from Electric moves as possible!"

Electivire nodded with a grunt. He watched Spinda with both patience and ferocity, waiting for the moment to attack the Spinda.

"You're going to have to get as close as you can to make sure that Rock Tomb catches Spinda and doesn't let her go. This will slow her down and allow for us to set up a bit more!" Jessie said. "Right after Spinda is pinned down, however, I need you to make a small Earthquake. The Woods is still in a critical condition and an earthquake from an official trainer can mean nothing but disaster, but if you centralize your power around the area where Spinda will be trapped, your move will be just as effective."

Electivire nodded and glared back at Spinda. There were still harsh feelings between the two, and Electivire was prepared to sort it out, once and for all. He began charging up his moves and preparing for the ensuing skirmish.

    Ranger Makina Auran

    *~~~~~~~~~*

Spinda, judging from the fact that she was still sporting a smug grin, was clearly pleased with her current tactic. By stealing Electivire's innate ability, she had effectively nulled any chances of being stricken with an Electric-type move. While the Spot Panda Pokemon still tottered about almost drunkenly, there was almost an air of confidence in her stance as well.

Jessie had come to the same conclusion as well. “Okay, Vire, keep it coming. Stay as far away from Electric moves as possible!”

Electivire nodded in response, though not without some annoyance. He balefully stared over at the gloating Spinda, possibly mentally going over multiple ways to make the wild Pokemon pay for taking his immunity.

“You're going to have to get as close as you can to make sure that Rock Tomb catches Spinda and doesn't let her go. This will slow her down and allow for us to set up a bit more!” the Trainer commanded. As her partner raised both of his arms in preparation to begin the move however, Jessie continued to speak, “Right after Spinda is pinned down, I need you to make a small Earthquake. The Woods is still in a critical condition and an earthquake from an official Trainer can mean nothing but disaster, but if you centralize your power around the area where Spinda will be trapped your move will be just as effective.”

Makina gave an approving nod, glad to hear that Jessie had managed to keep a clear mind about just where she was despite being in the middle of a battle. A lot of the newer Trainers had a habit of calling out whatever move they thought would do the most damage without considering the environment. In her time as a Ranger, she had personally seen someone attempt to freeze over an area near a volcano, almost melt an ice cavern by forcing Sunny Day in the area, and even nearly cause an avalanche by using an unique combination of moves. While Earthquake could be damaging, if both the Trainer and Pokemon knew how to utilize it the effect could be redirected to mostly hurt the target.

Electivire slammed his fists to the ground, the sound a subdued thud as they hit the still-moist earth. Moments later, a few stones erupted from the earth and surrounded Spinda, the rocky edges both cutting her and enclosing the Normal-type. Spinda stumbled from the shockwave, but managed to stay on her feet.

Judging from the way she frowned at the rocks, the wild Pokemon was more upset that her movement had been obstructed somewhat. There was still a large enough opening to easily target Electivire though, so Spinda gladly took that opportunity. Holding both of her front paws together while furrowing her brow in concentration, the Spot Panda managed to conjure forth a dark purple orb of energy. She shot the sphere forward, managing to hit Electivire.

Other than giving a slight grunt as the Shadow Ball struck his form, Electivire didn't falter. Instead, he immediately moved into the second part of his technique and sharply stomped the ground with his right foot. There was a small ripple as a tremor headed towards the Spinda, but the shockwave grew larger as it reached the earth directly underneath the wild Pokemon. The earth rumbled with impressive force, this time completely knocking Spinda off her feet. There was even an added bonus, though whether or not Jessie had anticipated this Makina was not sure- the stones conjured from Rock Tomb fell inwards as well, landing upon the Pokemon and creating a small dust cloud from the collapse.

Once the dust had cleared, it was revealed that Spinda had managed to stand back up. Her form had been battered from the earthen assault, and the smug confidence she had exuded earlier seemed to have evaporated. Instead, she was crying out something to Electivire and had both paws up in an universal “time-out” gesture.

Confused, Electivire slightly relaxed upon seeing the gesture. To have any Pokemon attempt to halt a battle in such a manner was strange, but most were willing to at least give their opponent a single chance to explain themselves. After all, emergencies did sometimes happen.

Seeing that Electivire was willing to hear her out, Spinda gave a small smile and began to speak once more. This time her tone sounded less pleading and more honeyed, almost as if she were praising him...or buttering him up.

Makina couldn't help but snort at the ridiculous display. If she didn't know any better, the Ranger would believe that Spinda was flirting with Jessie's Pokemon. “You may want to try talking sense into Electivire before he ends up falling for that Pokemon,” the Ranger advised, trying to keep a straight face. “Call me paranoid, but I doubt Spinda is acting on genuine feelings.”

Electivire moved just as Jessie had instructed him to. With an abrupt stomp on the ground, large pieces of rock rose out of the ground and hovered around Spinda's stumbling body. On Electivire's command, the rocks closed in on the Panda Pokémon, both dealing damage and keeping Spinda held in place.

"Nice one!" Jessie exclaimed, a wide grin creeping onto her face as she saw Spinda's confused face as it realized that it was, in fact, standing still! However, Spinda seemed far from amused. Jessie knew that Rock Tomb wasn't the strongest of moves, and the only major reason why Jessie even had it on her Pokémon was to slow down speedy threats. The stat drop was reliable enough, but the damage was minimal. Regardless, Spinda wasn't upset by the fact that she had been slightly injured; it was more the speed drop and the block caused between Spinda and her target that upset her.

Before Electivire could move, Spinda fired a large, purple ball of ominous gas at Electivire. The move barely phased Electivire, and Electivire continued his strategy with little more than a simple shrug and grunt. Jessie could only identify the move as Shadow Ball, which didn't make much sense for Spinda to have - Ghost and Normal were stark opposites. Regardless, the attack was almost futile, and Electivire was able to move on almost instantly.

Now that the wobbly target had been secured, Electivire stomped his foot even harder into the ground. He kicked the ground at an angle so the visible ripples of the Earthquake were aimed at Spinda and Spinda solely. However, something happened that Jessie didn't factor into her orders when she gave them to Electivire. Earthquake was such a strong move and true manipulation of it was hard if not impossible for a pure Electric type, so, while Electivire's Earthquake attack was precisely aimed, the power dealt by it was much stronger than anticipated.

Jessie swore she saw Spinda's normally babbling mouth close for a moment and her eyes open from their usual swirl of confusion when the tremor struck. However, Spinda was knocked to the ground before Jessie could see more. She stifled a giggle as Spinda fell over. "Surprising that this is the first time Spinda's fallen over yet, for such a tipsy Pokémon," Jessie mused to herself.

The stones from the previous Rock Tomb attack shattered under the pressure of the earthquake. Small but still sharp pieces of rock fragments jabbed into Spinda, dealing significant amounts of damage. Though Jessie had somewhat predicted that the Rock Tomb would be impacted by Earthquake, she wasn't expecting as large of a reaction as she got. Almost all of the rocks had concaved, crushing Spinda underneath a bed of sediment.

Before long passed and the dust settled down, Jessie squinted to see that Spinda had managed to pull itself off of the ground and wobble towards Electivire. She held two paws up, as if she was giving up in the battle, but Jessie doubted that Spinda would give up this easily. The battle was hopefully almost over, but the confidence and trickery that Spinda demonstrated earlier made Jessie uneasy, even at this time in the battle.

"Watch out, Vire. Something's up," Jessie said to her Pokémon. However, as soon as Jessie started talking, Spinda started wailing. It wasn't like the shrill scream from before, as Spinda seemed to be trying to appeal to Electivire. Maybe she was pleading for mercy? Jessie let her mind wander, but, as she began thinking of the craziest reasons why Spinda would be acting the way it was, Jessie failed to notice that Electivire's eyes were widening with admiration as Spinda continued her serenade.

"You may want to try talking sense into Electivire before he ends up falling for that Pokémon," Makina said, pulling Jessie back to reality.

    "Huh?" Jessie asked.

"Call me paranoid, but I doubt Spinda is acting on genuine feelings."

Jessie stared at Makina for a moment, the same look of confusion on her face, before she realized what exactly Makina was talking about. Jessie's mouth dropped as she saw that her Electivire was almost undoubtedly in love; Jessie feared that Electivire might be incapacitated if Spinda succeeded.

"Focus on my voice!" Jessie screamed, trying to overpower the soothing plea of the Spinda. "We're almost done, Vire. Now is not the time!" Jessie exclaimed. "Focus! You're already so close to her, so use your situation to the fullest! Use Quick Attack to stop her!"

    Electivire didn't move.

"Listen! You two lovebirds can flirt all you want when we get back to Nimbasa, but right now, I need you to make sure that we can capture her!" Jessie explained. "Now, use Quick Attack! And while you're at it, deal some more damage with another Brick Break!"

Jessie groaned to her ranger. However, she soon burst into laughter upon seeing Makina's strained face as Jessie knew that she too was holding in giggles. "Keep on with the plan!" Jessie howled between a loud cackle. "Remember, you're doing this to protect her! Love hurts! She'll come back to you if it's meant to be!" Jessie shouted out as many cliché love sayings as she could between her hearty guffaws.

"Oh boy," she smiled, wiping a tear as she turned her attention back to the battle.

    Ranger Makina Auran

OOC: Sleep is for the weak! ...and those with lives.

    *~~~~~~~~~*

It was easy to tell when it finally clicked to Jessie just what was going on here. After listening to Makina's advice, the Trainer had stood there in confusion, looking from her Ranger and back to Electivire. Finally, after processing the information, a look of dread appeared on Jessie's features. “Focus on my voice!” she shouted at Electivire, desperate to snap her partner out of what was likely to be sappy thoughts. “Focus! You're already so close to her, so use your situation to the fullest! Use Quick Attack to stop her!”

Unfortunately for Jessie, Electivire didn't look like he was willing to make an aggressive move any time soon. Already his posture was slackening and his attention was solely on Spinda, who was still gushing praise for the Electric-type. Things were quickly going from bad to worse.

“Listen! You two lovebirds can flirt all you want when we get back to Nimbasa, but right now I need you to make sure that we can capture her!" Jessie called out, trying to reason with Electivire. "Now, use Quick Attack! And while you're at it, deal some more damage with another Brick Break!”

If this keeps up, either these two are going to be standing here all day or Spinda is going to somehow talk Electivire into letting her go, Makina winced at the thought, not eager to see a promising catch for a Trainer walk away or seeing a couple dote over one another. Over the mental link she shared with Aria, she felt slight confusion on the Gardevoir's part as she sensed what the Trainer was worrying about. It's nothing, Aria, just a battle taking a strange turn is all.

<So long as nothing has blown up over there, I am sure you will be fine,> Aria faintly replied, though she sounded distracted. It was likely she was still working on the roadblock with Rezi, and had only stopped to check in when she had felt something odd.

Relax. Nothing is getting destroyed today, least not on my watch, Makina replied. Sensing that Aria had nothing more to say, she focused once more on the situation- and saw that Jessie had been looking over at her. The Trainer must have noticed her trying and failing to keep a normal composure. Something passed over Jessie's face that Makina could have almost sworn was a smirk, then the Trainer burst into laughter.

Despite her laughter, Jessie managed to cheer on her Electivire. “Keep on with the plan! Remember, you're doing this to protect her! Love hurts! She'll come back to you if it's meant to be!” She then called out multiple love phrases, some which sounded cheesier than a room full of dairy and was likely to sweeten the milk as well if the words happened to magically reach it.

For the love of Arceus, this is turning out worse than a souped-up Valentine's special, Makina groaned, though it was hard not to grin at the way Electivire was taking his Trainer's assault. The large fuzzball had managed to finally register Jessie's words, and his eyes were blazing with determination.

Slowly Electivire regained his fighting stance, tensing up and rotating both of his arms as the Pokemon prepped himself for battle once more. In an eyeblink, he was gone- and reappeared next to Spinda, landing a quick punch on the Normal-type's midsection. Out of breath, the Spot Panda was powerless as Electivire landed yet another sharp judo chop on her, making the wild Pokemon stagger backwards.

Clearly enraged that her ploy had been terminated in such a fashion, Spinda puffed up in anger and began to glow as she powered a yet-unknown attack- and promptly deflated as her entire form shuddered with an unseen electric current. Electivire's Thunder Wave from earlier was finally proving worthwhile, and had kicked in as soon as Spinda had proven hostile. Now was a perfect time for Jessie and Electivire to act.

Jessie, having finally calmed down from her laugh-fest, was watching the battle closely. She figured she was narrowing in on a capture, but she couldn't get too cocky about herself. This Spinda was obviously full of surprises, and assuming this was over would be a silly and perhaps awful mistake.

The Spinda continued her romantic rant to Electivire, but the constant reminder of Jessie's voice had managed to give him a single moment of clarity. At this point, Electivire rushed towards Spinda at intense speeds, moving around faster than Jessie could register, she knew that Electivire had managed to pull off the Quick Attack. Electivire's massive fist slammed into Spinda's chest, knocking her back several feet, but the second blow to the Spinda's back was what dealt the most damage. The Brick Break made yet another loud thwack as the karate chop connected directly to its target.

Spinda had fallen to the ground and was struggling to even stand back up. Jessie knew that Spinda was obviously exhausted, and she doubted it would take more than one attack before the Pokémon would be able to be captured. Almost out of rage, Spinda's normally small body seemed to grow (not quite the size of Electivire, but still significantly larger) but a ripple of bright yellow electricity surged across Spinda's tattered body.

"Must've been the paralysis," Jessie nodded to herself. "Okay, Vire, now's our chance!" Jessie exclaimed. "I want you to deal one last blow with Quick Attack, which should lower Spinda's health to the perfect spot. As soon as you connect with her, pull back out and let me take it away!"

Electivire seemed to nod, but Jessie couldn't tell exactly. Even though Electivire was paying more attention to Jessie now, he still seemed very set on Spinda's wellbeing. Hopefully, Electivire would understand and drop the health to the precise point best for capture.

As Jessie waited for her Electivire to attack, she reached into her small athletic bag that hung on her shoulder. Pulling out a single Park Ball, Jessie scanned the battlefield, looking and preparing for when the best time would be to toss it. It would only be a few moments, assuming all went according to plan.

Jessie, recognizing the effects of paralysis as it left Spinda stricken, reacted quickly. “Okay, Vire, now's our chance! I want you to deal one last blow with Quick Attack.”

Electivire's eyes widened in dismay as he stared disbelievingly back at his Trainer. The object of his affection was barely able to stand, and his Trainer was commanding him to deal even more damage? The Electric-type shook his head at Jessie, adamant on doing no more.

Jessie, seeing her Pokemon's reluctance, pulled out a Parkball from her pack and held it up towards Electivire as an explanation. “As soon as you connect with her, pull back out and let me take it away!”

After mumbling what sounded like an apology from his opponent, Electivire disappeared once more only to reappear beside Spinda to land yet another punch on the Spot Panda. Still, Electivire wasn't eager to attack; the jab he landed barely staggered his target, and it was clear to all that he was holding back most of his power. Once the attack had been completed, the Electric-type leaped to the side and looked back over at Jessie.

Jessie had thrown the Parkball as soon as her partner was well out of the way. The capture device sucked in the surprised Spinda, and lightly fell to the ground. As the sphere wobbled about, everyone present watched it with some trepidation. Just when it seemed like Spinda was about to give up, the Parkball opened up once more as the wild Pokemon broke free, with an angry look sporting her face. Thankfully, the capture device was still intact; it rolled about a foot off to the side and rested upon a bed of leaves.

Spinda took it upon herself to finally act upon her anger. All signs of the wily personality it had shown were gone, replaced with open fury. Letting out a shrill cry, the wild Pokemon landed a few wildly aimed punches on Electivire. Her exhaustion was still readily apparent though, for soon after she slumped over from exhaustion.

“I doubt Spinda can weather yet another capture attempt,” Makina advised Jessie. “Try again, I'm sure you'll get her this time!”

Electivire had managed to break through his growing love for Spinda, and, though it pained him, charged forwards at amazing speeds. He slammed into Spinda, battering her around, before he managed to speed away from Spinda just as quickly.

"Nice job, Vire!" Jessie exclaimed. "Now..." Jessie said with a deep breath. "Focus, Jessie. Aim for the body, not the feet. Keep a steady arm," Jessie reminded herself. She gently placed the Park Ball into her left hand and hesitated once more. A second later, the ball was sailing through the air. Jessie's aim was spot on, as it managed to pelt Spinda in the stomach.

"Yes!" Jessie exclaimed, but this wasn't over yet. Three more wobbles and Spinda would be hers. Two more and she wouldn't leave empty handed. One more...

The ball erupted in an explosion of light. Spinda stood beside the ball, a look of frustration on her face. She flailed her arms against Electivire while she screamed sharply (not as sharp as the original voice, thankfully) but the small fists dealt little damage. Spinda was exhausted, and, while her exhaustion seemed to be fueling her rage, there simply wasn't enough power to actually harm Electivire. After she finished her rant, Spinda slouched over, too tired to move on.

"I doubt Spinda can weather yet another capture attempt," Makina said, gesturing towards the Pokémon. "Try again, I'm sure you'll get her this time!"

Jessie nodded with a frown as she pulled out another Park Ball. "Yeah, hopefully. Spinda must've had one last bout of energy to escape the ball, but I doubt she has any drive to escape the ball this time." With that, Jessie tossed her second Park Ball.

Despite being dismayed at seeing that Spinda still had some fight left, Jessie didn't waste any time in fishing out yet another Parkball from her pack. “Yeah, hopefully,” she replied to Makina. “Spinda must've had one last bout of energy to escape the ball, but I doubt she has any drive to escape this time.” Taking careful aim once more, the Trainer lobbed the Ball towards the exhausted Spinda.

Like before, the Spot Panda was effortlessly sucked into the device, the sphere feebly rocking about as Spinda fought her confines. Almost immediately this time, the Parkball grew still and let off a small ping, confirming that she had finally given in.

Makina walked towards the Parkball, picking up the object and storing it in the same side pocket that she always used to store Pokemon caught by Trainers in the Park. This time, she was surprised to see that her every move was being watched; even though Electivire appeared to be coming out of a thick haze, the large Electric-type was still very interested to see what was going to happen to Spinda. Sometimes it took a while for Pokemon to shake off the effects of Attract, while others were able to act normally mere moments after the technique had ended. Apparently Jessie's Pokemon was falling into the former.

“Well then... we can head out whenever you are ready, or you can take a moment to rest if you would like,” Makina said to Jessie, trying to act disinterested in the fact that a very large Pokemon was standing nearby and still glaring over at her pack where the Parkball lay within. “Be sure to grab your other Parkball as well; would be an interesting lesson if one of the younger locals tried to play with it.”

Jessie let out a loud cheer as the Park Ball's miniscule wobbling finally came to an end. After what seemed as one of the funniest battles Jessie had witnessed, the Spinda had finally been captured.

Jessie gave an approving nod to Makina as her ranger grabbed the now occupied Pokeball. Dropping the ball into her pack on her hip, Makina soon returned to her previous standing place next to Jessie.

Jessie called Electivire back into his Pokeball when she noticed that he was eyeing Makina's pack. Afraid that Electivire might make a rash decision, Jessie absorbed her Pokemon in a flash of light.

"Ready to move on, I guess," Jessie said in reply to her ranger's question. "The attraction that Electivire has should hopefully go away when he comes out of his Pokeball. Besides, he's a very loyal Pokemon, so I doubt his affection towards Spinda will have any influence on his battling standards. Let's press on," Jessie said with a nod.

After recalling Electivire back into his Pokeball, Jessie gave a nod in reply to signal that she was ready to move on. “Let's press on.”

Seeing that Jessie was ready to continue, Makina lead them back to the main path and further on into the woods. The short trip back was uneventful; unsurprising thanks to Electivire and Spinda's battle. The locals were already shaken up thanks to the storm, so they weren't likely to rush towards the sounds of a confrontation any time soon if at all.

After walking along the forest trail for roughly thirty minutes or so, it became apparent that someone was watching the group. There was the sound of someone shuffling about, much like before, but it would always pause whenever Jessie or Makina looked towards the sound. Once the trees thinned out a bit more, and the creature had nothing to hide behind, the lurker's identity was revealed.

Realizing that it had nowhere else to go, a small Pokemon padded forward. While easy to identify thanks to its thick brown fur with a white ruff adorning its neck, the most well-known feature of this creature was the fact that it could evolve into one of many forms. Something seemed off about this one though; its bushy tail was near dragging the ground as it skulked forward, and it looked towards the group with seemed to be a glimmer of hope.

“An Eevee, this far out?” Makina wondered aloud. Usually the Pokemon stayed in the hidden, more enclosed areas of the Park. While they moved on to other areas on the island upon evolution, the children or the ones who preferred their original form would stay in the Woods. “Did you want to go after one, or do you want to see what it wants first?”

The walk after the battle was both calming and nerve-wracking. Jessie had no doubt that the noise from her battle would have scared away the nearby Pokémon, but she didn't imagine that they would be walking for over half an hour without any encounters. The storm must've had a larger impact than Jessie first thought.

Out of the corner of Jessie's eye, she saw a dark blur bolt between the trees. "Did you see...?" Jessie asked as she spun around to see what the disturbance was, but she trailed off once she realized that it was no longer there. "That's strange..." Jessie muttered to herself.

However, upon approaching a fairly open field in the Woods, Jessie knew that whatever had been following her was still there. With nowhere else to hide, a single Pokémon lurched forward. Jessie immediately recognized the beast as an Eevee, as Jessie had raised several of them in the past, including her prized possession, Toshiro, a Jolteon with the strange power to control Ice.

"An Eevee, this far out?" Makina asked to herself, but Jessie simply shrugged. She had never encountered an Eevee in the wild before, so her knowledge on Eevee's standard location wasn't great. "Did you want to go after one, or do you want to see what it wants first?"

Jessie stared at the apparently depressed Eevee. The look in its eyes broke Jessie's heart, but Jessie figured that being stolen from its home would do nothing but harm to this poor Pokémon. "I can't... Let's try and leave Eevee be; he already seems upset enough. If not, I can throw him a Pokedoll to lighten his spirits."
