    Ranger Makina Auron

    @Pman

    OOC: Feel free to ask me if you have any questions. Also, Magnezone needs a Nature.

    *~~~~~~~~~*

    Makina leaned upon the dingy gray wall that lay just behind her, counting the passing seconds for what felt like the fifth time since she arrived here. Unfortunately, there was nothing else to do in this dreary place; the area surrounding the Power Plant was just as featureless as the building itself, save for the stray Pokemon or two that peered through the windows before going on their way to do far more exciting things.

    The day had started ordinarily enough. She had been sent to one of the outposts to run over some required documentation, then had been held back when one of the young temps had difficulties with one of the computers and needed help. It was an ancient model, easily several years old, but in the end the matter had been dealt with. Once Makina had been heading out to return back to the main outpost, a secretary handed her a Run request labeled for the nearby area, dated oddly enough over a day ago.

    “Most of the Rangers already have their hands full, so would you mind taking this person through?” the secretary had asked her.

    So for the moment, Makina was effectively grounded to the area until her Trainer arrived. Even Aria, her Gardevoir was not with her this time around- she had said something about “trying to lose the tail of a certain Ranger's Gallade” and had disappeared for the moment. The only thing she could do was wait and hope that the person she was escorting through would appear soon.

    Ryan Hoare was gently wandering down the path towards the Abandoned Power Plant in a carefree kind of way. He’d been sitting in the Dock all day yesterday waiting for a ranger to be available, but none had ever become so. He’d been sent home last night and informed that he would receive a phone call when a ranger became available.

    So, after another sleepless night in the Lily Hotel, Ryan was now itching for adventure and the chance of encountering new Pokémon.

    As he wandered, he pulled out his poison repel so he could read the instructions on the back. Under the large warning telling him not to ingest it, the instructions told him to spray it on his clothes, avoiding his hands and face as it was toxic.

    Ryan appreciated the Irony of a poison repel being poison in its own regard, then quickly sprayed some on his clothes and shoes. Very quickly, the bottle was empty.

    As he wandered along, he thought about Rotom, they were the reason here was here in a place where electric Pokémon were so common that electric repels were banned, He idly wondered if electric repels electrocuted you, the same way poison repels could poison you.

    As he rounded a bend, an old building came into sight, this was obviously the power plant, but where was the ranger?

    As Ryan walked around the building he spotted an young woman resting against it, she wasn’t unattractive and her grey hair was unusual, still, he wouldn’t be going out of his way to hit on her, he was too focused on his job.

    Ranger Makina Auron

    *~~~~~~~~~*

    Hearing the sound of footsteps approaching, Makina stepped forward and greeted the new arrival. “You must be Ryan, welcome to the Plant,” she said, holding out a hand in greeting. “I'm Makina, and I'll be your Ranger for today.”

    Once all greetings were out of the way, Makina began to unlock one of the doors for them to pass on by. This particular one required a password entered into the keypad as well as a retinal scan, the latter having been added only fairly recently due to the password being leaked and causing a nice fiasco for a short while... but that was another story entirely. Moments later, the door opened with a slight hiss, granting them passage. As soon as everyone was inside, she secured the door once more.

    The Plant, as always, was a stark contrast to the outdoor world outside. While the building had a boring, relatively debris-free yard, the inside was full of discarded electronics strewn about the area. Due to this being one of the entrances, most of the electronic parts and broken objects were swept to the side, allowing Trainers and their Pokemon to safely enter without fear of being blocked or stepping on some broken glass or wires.

    Before Makina could ask what Ryan was looking for specifically in this area, a small pink blob slithered over to them, apparently curious to see newcomers to this area.

    “Barely a minute in here, and already looks like we met your first encounter,” Makina remarked to Ryan. “Interested in a Ditto?”

    Ryan now had a name to go with the face and it was a name he really liked, Makina.

    Ryan watched as Makina entered a password and did a retinal scan, he hadn’t heard anything about this and assumed it was to do with the hacker styling himself “Team Evolution.”

    The inside of the building was actually kind of boring, but there were plenty of unusual features, not much in the way of debris, but there were consoles and things, empty of computational hardware, probably removed by the company.

    As he was looking around, Ryan noticed a pink blob that looked something like a deformed Mew popping out into view.

    Unfortunately for Ryan’s wallet, and probably Makina’s too, this wasn’t a nuclear power plant and therefore it wasn’t a deformed Mew, it was in fact, a Ditto.

    Okay, so a Ditto wasn’t that bad for Makina’s wallet, she would get sales commission on a Pokedoll, Ryan would just get hit for the $500 dollars he was digging out of his wallet to pass to her.

    EDIT: given I'm paranoid and had 3 rangers last time and at least 4 rolls for mons, I think 5, can I please have the poison repel stored in the area effects?

    Ranger Makina Auron

    OOC: Added. I have yet to ditch a run, but can understand the worry x.x

    *~~~~~~~~~*

    Ryan didn't respond as he looked over at the Ditto, opting instead to pull out his wallet and pulliing out a few bills before holding out the wad of cash towards Makina, motioning for her to take it.

    Seeing the money, Makina shook her head. “There's no need for that. Dolls are only needed if the Pokemon in question is extremely persistent in following or decides to be aggressive. Let's head to the next room and see from there, shall we?” she said to Ryan, pointing to a nearby doorway.

    Unfortunately, Ditto did seem particularly interested in the pair, shifting into the round form of an Electrode to roll in front of them before shifting back into its normal pink form. It stretched up and tried to puff up in anger, trying and mostly failing at looking formidable.

    Sighing, Makina reached into her pack and fished out the first Pokedoll she came upon, this one shaped like a Pikachu. As she lightly tossed the doll forward, Ditto immediately moved over to it, shifting into a Pikachu as well and using the toy as a guideline to correctly change the look of its face as well. While the wild Pokemon was distracted, Makina quickly led Ryan over to the next room.

    “Ditto may be excellent shapeshifters, but they have the attention span of a toddler,” Makina remarked, accepting the money from Ryan this time for the Pokedoll. “Let's continue on, shall we?”

    The room they had stumbled upon appeared to be more a storeroom more then anything else, filled to the brim with ancient electronics filling the shelves that lined the wall. The ones stored here appeared to be old game consoles, dating from ones that must have been the first systems to one particular one that Makina recognized playing while growing up. There were even a few slot machines tossed about, apparently discarded in there when a nearby region shut down a popular casino.

    It was from one of these slot machines, the back of the device completely missing, that another Pokemon rolled out of to greet them. “Rolled” was an accurate way of describing it- the creature was completely round and looked almost like a Pokeball in appearance.

    “Care for a Voltorb?” Makina asked, looking over at Ryan.

    Ryan was amazed, Makina had initially turned down his offer of money to escape, He knew he wanted out of there but she was giving him a chance to run first, most rangers just took your money with a smile.

    After informing Ryan that Ditto “have the attention span of a toddler,” Makina lead Ryan into another room, this one had more clutter than the last, there were even a few wall cabinets filled with electronics components, Ryan was of half a mind to ask Makina if he could have a rummage through for anything useful or interesting.

    Before he got a chance however, a giant pokeball came rolling towards him. Ryan however was intelligent enough to recognise that the giant pokeball was in fact a Voltorb.

    Makina asked him if he was interested in capturing it, Ryan just shook his head and held up his wallet to signify that he was happy to pay to escape if running didn’t work, the bolted for the door opposite the one they’d come through, hoping Makina would be hot on his heels.

    I trust you to stay with it, doesn't mean my post quality won't be so bad I need a reroll, I'll pay if I use the doll. @Akinai

    Ranger Makina Auron

    *~~~~~~~~~*

    Ryan shook his head once more in response, holding up his wallet to show that he was willing to pay for another Doll. This time however, he did something entirely new- he bolted off, heading towards the doorway on the other side of the room.

    Makina was right behind him, grabbing the Trainer's arm to prevent him going any further. “I wouldn't do that, if I were you,” she warned, her tone serious. “It's in the guidelines for Rangers to always lead the way so the Trainers have less of a chance to stumble upon an angry wild Pokemon alone.” There were always environmental risks as well, even in the Plant; live wires could block the path, or even something as simple as broken glass. Makina figured the warning alone of a ticked-off Electrode or Magnezone was warning enough for the moment though.

    Voltorb watched the discussion impassively and, bored once it figured out that it would not be battling anyone for the moment, rolled away back into the previous room. As it disappeared from sight, another Pokemon walked over to them, examining them with a wary eye. This one possessed spiked yellow fur, with a white ruff that was currently standing on end.

    “Did you want a Jolteon?”

    Ryan took the warning on the chin, Makina was right, he really shouldn’t have bolted without letting her lead the way, who knew what he might come across if he wasn’t prepared for it.

    Upon entering the room, he encountered a yellow pincushion. The pincushion was rather catlike and moving around the room rather fast. Pincushion or not, jolteon could be dangerous, they could also be purchased at your local convenience store.

    Ryan wasn’t here for Pokémon he could get at Aldi with a better chance of having a good Hidden Power type. He was here for rare and unusual things, Rotom and Porygon being top of his priority list, though he would make a point of catching the first Pokémon he encountered that couldn’t be purchased with relative ease.

    As such, he turned to Makina and whispered, “Any chance of slipping away, I’ll pay you for a doll of if we can’t.”

    Ranger Makina Auron

    *~~~~~~~~~*

    This time, Ryan stayed put, looking over at the Jolteon. “Any chance of slipping away, I’ll pay you for a doll of if we can’t,” he said to Makina, keeping his voice low.

    Makina nodded, staying silent but motioning for the Trainer to follow her as she slowly moved to the side to allow the Jolteon to pass. While most of the Eevee evolutions were pretty laid back, there was always a chance that this one was in a particularly bad mood. Fortunately, this did not seem to be the case; as soon as there was ample room to pass, the Jolteon slowly walked by to enter the room behind them.

    “Right, that was simple enough,” Makina said once the Jolteon was out of sight. Now they could explore the room in relative peace.

    Unlike the last room, there was not a single shelf in sight. Instead, broken parts of unknown devices were skewed about the room, as if some insane tinkerer decided to toss his spare parts across the area. Strangely enough, there was one relatively clear space in the far right corner of the room, where a lone creature was moving about.

    The Pokemon was small, barely over a foot it seemed, and appeared to be completely absorbed in its current routine. As they approached closer, it was revealed that it was actually trying a dance, but it seemed incomplete for some reason- almost as if it was meant for two creatures instead of one. This, along with the blue markings on the tiny Electric-type, made it easy to identify.

    “Odd to see a Minun by itself,” Makina remarked. “Still, I'm sure it wouldn't turn down a fight. Care to battle?”

    As the jolteon left them alone, Ryan took the chance to look around the room, it was rather cluttered, like someone had set off a small explosive under a pile of electronics, maybe a sealed coke bottle full of liquid nitrogen, that would explode with the right amount of power.

    Oddly however, the was a clear spot in one corner and it appeared to be the nest of a Pokémon, not the sort of Pokémon Ryan was searching for however. It was a 1 foot tall bundle of uselessness that could be picked up for about $6000 at your local pokemart.

    It was also a Pokémon Ryan had stupidly spent $21,000 on at an auction one Valentine’s day. He had a matching set of Plusle and Minun already so this one didn’t really do much for him.

    Ryan spied a promising looking room a leaned over toward Makina, “Any chance of a Rotom or Porygon line Pokémon in there? Oh, and if we can’t just walk away from this guy, I’ll buy one of those dolls.”

    OOC: No worries. As you can see, the Plant is pretty hit-and-miss. You do have some nice things, promise. Also, subtract money for a Doll.

    *~~~~~~~~~*

    “Any chance of a Rotom or Porygon line Pokémon in there?” Ryan asked, looking over at a connecting room. Seeing that she was waiting for a response about Minun he added, “Oh, and if we can’t just walk away from this guy, I’ll buy one of those dolls.”

    Unfortunately for Ryan, it appeared that Minun had overheard his comment. Seeing that the Trainer had no desire to battle it, the small Electric type rushed out of the circle and jumped in front of the group, its cheeks sparking dangerously.

    “Guess it can't be helped,” Makina sighed, digging into her pack for a Doll. This time around, she managed to find one in the likeness of a Plusle, which were often companions of Minun. As soon as the wild Pokemon saw the toy, it snatched it from the Ranger's hands, completely ignoring the group.

    Once Minun was successfully distracted, they moved on to where Makina had seen Ryan looking, which was actually a side room. The area was lined with magnets of all shapes and sizes, varying from small refrigerator magnets to a large electromagnet that took an entire corner of the room. As Makina led Ryan into the room though, a few smaller magnets fell down from what appeared to be the ceiling, clattering to the floor. Curious, Makina looked up to figure out the reason why, and spotted the culprit.

    Seeing that they were spotted, a connected trio of Pokemon hovered slowly down, the middle one grumbling to the other two. The conjoined creature appeared to be completely identical, save for the one on the left; this one was covered with small magnets, apparently refusing to reverse polarity to drop the trinkets.

    “Well then... care for a Magneton?” Makina asked Ryan.

    Ryan was unhappy but also unsurprised when the Minun didn’t let him go, it was always bound to happen at some point. What did surprise Ryan, though ti really shouldn’t have, was that Makina was carrying Plusle doll.

    As the turned around, Ryan pulled his bulging wallet out of his back pocket and for the first time in this run, he handed over a five hundred dollar note. As they were starting to wander away, a pile of rubbish on the other side of the room moved, the source could be found hovering above the pile, three Pokémon linked together in the way only a Magnemite could be, but they weren’t called Magnemite when they were set up like this, they tended to be referred to as Magneton.

    This was the first time that Ryan was going to get to have a battle and he wanted to make it a good one. Ryan pulled out a pokeball that contained one of his favourite gym Pokémon, the Icy blue “f” in a grey circle emblazoned just above the release catch.

    The blue told him he had an ice type whilst the grey told him it was a ghost, the “f” stood for Froslass if you hadn’t already worked that out.

    Here was his chance and Ryan was determined to start out slowly, hinder then magneton and then start to move towards damage, but do so carefully.

    Frossy came out and Ryan was ready to launch his first “attack.”

    “Frossy, let’s get this party started! Hit him with a Thunder Wave.”

    The Froslass seemed to get angry and its cheeks started sparking, but the sparks weren’t from anger, the sparks were calculated and deliberate, Frossy was cool, calm and collected as befitted an ice type Pokémon.

    The sparks began to become a solid haze of yellow accompanied by the cracking sounds of arcing electrons, then a sheer wall of electricity went crashing towards the magneton, Ryan crossed his fingers hoping to paralyse his target Pokémon.

    Once again, it was clear that Ryan preferred to let his actions speak for themselves rather than explain them with words. As he saw Magneton lower down from the ceiling, he grabbed a Pokeball and tossed it forward, revealing the snow-white form of a Froslass.

    The incorporeal Ice-type, once she was fully materialized, looked over at the wild Magneton with an expression that could only be defined as mysterious. While there was no malice to it, there was still a slight air of confidence coming from her, as if the Froslass believed there was no doubt in her victory.

    “Frossy, let’s get this party started! Hit him with a Thunder Wave,” Ryan commanded, pointing over at the Magneton.

    Makina frowned slightly at the Trainer's currently chosen strategy, but stayed silent for now. Ice Pokemon, in addition to being weak against Steel-type moves, were not often used to begin a battle due to their fragility. In addition, using a move like Thunder Wave on an Electric-type would power up a decent handful of them thanks to the abilities Lightningrod and Motor Drive. Still, it was possible that Ryan had a plan behind choosing such a combination.

    Frossy immediately began charging a small field of static electricity, the color a deep azure blue. Once she had enough of a charge, the Froslass threw both of her hands forward as she tossed the field towards the wild Pokemon.

    Two of Magneton's eyes rolled as they saw the attack head towards it, and began to shoot its own pulse of energy to toss back the wave. Unfortunately, due to the magnet-covered Magnemite head still refusing to help out due to wanting to keep his prize attached, the pulse was not nearly strong enough. Frossy's attack managed to break through, and the Thunder Wave managed to disrupt Magneton's sense of equilibrium, hindering its movement.

    In retaliation, Magneton shot a magnetic pulse at a nearby magnet pile, collecting a softball-sized clump of them towards its body as they shined with a silver light. Once they were gathered together, the Electric-type lobbed them towards the Froslass, shooting forward with impeccable accuracy. Frossy shuddered as the magnets hit her body, but did not shrink back. While Magneton had struck the first blow, it was also feeling the grip of paralysis- this battle was for from over.

    Ryan knew the risks he was taking in using and ice type against a steel type, He also knew the risks in using an electric attack but he had never come across a Magneton that could just shrug off a Thunder Wave, they just didn’t come equipped for it.

    Ryan was also exceedingly happy with the early results of the battle, he was just here to set up, now he’d done that, it was time to call upon some other Pokémon, most likely his metagross who could take an awful lot of punishment and at the same time, either deal some damage slowly and whittle the Magneton down, or, it could hit that ball of magnets hard and fast, making for a fast and furious battle, though those rarely happened in the park when there was a chance of a capture, the quick battle was for escaping.

    Ryan, having thought all this through was just a little too late to pull his Froslass out before the Magnet Bomb could hit it, still, Froslass was grinning, obviously enjoying having a part to play in the acquiring of new friends and partners.

    As Ryan called froslass back towards himself, leaving her out ready to battle as required, he pulled out a grey and purple pokeball, this was the ball that contained Metagame, his metagross.

    Metagame was one of the earliest Pokémon Ryan had acquired and was still a very good friend.

    Metagame didn’t have a job involving doing lots of damage quickly today and he knew it, it also knew it wasn’t meant to damage the surroundings, this wasn’t a gym that was built to withstand the large amounts of seismic activity that often accompanied it’s battles back in Ryan’s Canalave Gym days.

    As such, Metagame, using its vast intelligence and strong bond with Ryan from their many years together, launched a lightning fast attack, determined to get the first hit in what would be an epically slow struggle.

    Not that Metagame was any stranger to long slow battles, one Gym Tournament battle that Metagam had spent six hours going toe to toe with a Forretress came to mind, hopefully this wouldn’t last that long.

    The bullet punch however, flew through the air like its name implied, moving as fast as it was, it seemed unlikely that the paralysed Magneton could get out of the way in time.

    OOC: The Magnemite line are Genderless.

    *~~~~~~~~~*

    As both Pokemon backed away from each other, Ryan pulled out Frossy's Pokeball once more, recalling the creature. As the Froslass was sucked back into the sphere, the young Trainer tossed another Pokeball forward, and the white light slowly materialized into a somewhat familiar form to those who battled often- Metagross.

    Seeing a new opponent begin to form on the field, Magneton shot a red light over at the figure. The light centered in, and stayed dead-center on Metagross as it appeared. This was Lock-On, a move that assured that the Pokemon's next move would hit without fail.

    Metagross, rather then wait for a command from its Trainer like most Pokemon, instantly shot towards Magneton, landing a quick jab with its left front foot. Judging from Ryan's lack of reaction to this move, the two must have often used this strategy in the past. Magneton reeled back from the blow, but the red light stayed glued on the Psychic-type.

    As Metagross moved to retreat, his attack complete for the moment, Magneton began to charge a large amount of electricity around the section where the three heads met on its form. Oncce it was fully formed, the Electric-type shot a large bolt straight towards Metagross, the attack following the red light dead-on. Metagross shuddered as the current shocked him, but appeared ready for more.

    Ryna had to be careful now, he didn’t want to risk Killing the Magnezone, not if he actually wanted to capture it. Metagross are known for their rather strong physical attack, so, in an effort not to do too much damage, Ryan decided that a so called “special attack” was most likely the preferable option here.

    He also had the choice of something that would do lots of damage, not desired, or something that would do a reasonable amount of damage whilst giving a chance of a secondary effect, depending on how skilled the Metagross was at using the move.

    He chose to go for a move with a secondary effect, now the only choice was weather he want a same type attack bonus or not, he didn’t really care so he ordered Metagross to “Use your confusion attack, see if we can confuse this beast.”

    Whilst beast wasn’t a very good description of the Magneton, it was a codeword telling the Metagross that the confusion chance was more important than the damage today.

    There was a faint glow around the Metagross as it reached out with its mind to assault the mind of the Magneton.

    ~~~~~
    The blue waves rushed around my body, pulling at my long cloak as I spun through the strange dimension that Psychic Pokemon used to teleport. I could just barely make out the shape of my Gallade in front of me as he guided me along the myriad paths to our destination.
    Finally, the blue overtones faded to whiteness, and I knew we were there. Dual and I emerged from the other dimension into reality, specifically the Abandoned Power Plant. It wasn't so abandoned right now, though - Ranger Makina was escorting some Trainer through the concrete wasteland, and I'd been sent to replace her. The Trainer in question was battling a Magneton with a Metagross, but I couldn't enjoy the battle until I spoke to Makina.
    "There's some woman back at Headquarters, demanding to see you," I murmured to her. "She said something about a family get-together, and she looked right pissed off. Dual will take you back, Boss-sama's orders."
    Makina nodded and turned to Dual, and there was a bright blue flash before both of them disappeared. I turned to see the Metagross glow bright blue, and the Magneton started to shake. It was definitely a form of Confusion. The attack must have made Magneton wary, because once the blue glow faded it backed up and created a pink square shield between the two Pokemon. I decided not to introduce myself until after the battle - the Trainer had enough on his case already.
    The confusion quite unfortunately hadn’t worked, and the Magnezone had managed to set up a reflect would further reduce the damage the Ryan’s Metagross could deal. This was entirely a bad thing though and Ryan had a slight smile on his face.
    Ryan mentally noted something going on behind him but didn’t pay much attention to it, if it was dangerous, Makina would either alert him or deal with it.
    He now had to make a decision based on the amount of damage that reflect would prevent. He was figuring that special attacks were now much more useful than physical ones. Maybe just attempting to confuse the Magnezone was the best bet.
    As such, Ryan called out to his Metagross to “Use another Confusion attack, let’s keep that thing from harming us.”
    Metagross, knowing his job, used his gigantic brain to batter the Magnezones mental defences.
    OOC: @Pman; Here's a hint, you'll get better results by describing and explaining your attacks more thoroughly. Also, try not to use the same move repeatedly.
    ~~~~~

    The Trainer seemed to recognise the Reflect shield for what it was, as he ordered his Metagross to stick to special-based attacks.

    “Use another Confusion attack, let’s keep that thing from harming us,” he said. It was a good plan, except Confusion was a low-level attack, and while chipping health off slowly was usually a good plan it could sometimes go very awry. I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of those times.

    Metagross started to glow blue once more, and the Magneton started being shaken around like a rag doll. I wouldn't be surprised if the Trainer's intent was to confuse the Magneton, but he'd have to do much better than that to confuse the Electric-type.

    As the Wild Pokemon shook, small electric sparks began to gather around its body. The second that the Metagross' Confusion stopped, the sparks expanded to cover the Magneton completely, and then they blasted towards Metagross in the shape of a spear. The Thundershock knocked the psychic crab backwards a little bit, but didn't seem to do much damage - most of the sparks crawled helplessly over Metagross' metal skin. I knew that the Magneton wouldn't be content to stick with swapping low-level attacks for long, so the Trainer would need to up the ante before the Wild Pokemon did.

    Ryan watched on in dismay as Metagame once again failed to confuse the Magneton. He had been hoping that this move would confuse the Magneton before it started to hit back big, but no such luck. Now he was sure Metagame was going to be hit with something reasonably powerful.

    To his surprise, the sparks forming on the skin of the Magneton didn’t continue to pick up after Metagame’s attack concluded. Instead, a spear shaped bolt of lightning came shooting towards his beloved Metagross, taking the jagged path of least resistance until it ploughed into its left flank.

    Metagame didn’t show a sign of discomfort as the sparks rolled over his skin, this was a Pokémon with vast experience in top flight competition, Metagame had over 30 gym battles under its belt to go along with three wins in free-for-alls. You don’t go through all that without developing the ability to hide your emotions.

    Ryan really had no idea how he was going to respond to this rather surprising attack. He knew this chipping away and feeling each other out couldn’t last forever and that a fast, aggressive battle was sure to follow. He still had the problem of wanting to draw the battle out to more effectively tire the Magneton.

    Ryan knew that the key to slowing the battle down was reducing the damage dealt to his Pokémon, yet allowing himself to injure the Magneton at will. The solution to his problem was therefore to set up screens, and based on the moves Magneton had been using, he decided to slip forward and whisper Metagame’s ear, “Wait until it starts charging an attack, then throw up a Light Screen.”

    A slight pink glow appeared behind Metagame, where the Magneton wouldn’t be able to see it. Metagame was ready to push the glow underneath itself so it could explode into a wall of transparent pink light about 15 metres long which would reduce any damage done by special attacks.
