    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ivy marked another check under the 'safe' column of her Meteor Valley cave list on her phone. This one was number twenty three. She had roughly thirty more cave entrances to check before she was done.

Lately the Ranger had been doing a lot of small side projects. She had worked her way through cleaning and rearranging most of the storage sheds at each Outpost, checked and repaired docks and boats at the Lakes, and planted and re-potted foliage from the Gardens. She supposed someone had to do it, and she didn't mind the break from paperwork.

She specifically didn't mind this task. Trainers and Rangers went into these caves all the time, and it was good to check if they were stable enough. Her first run, when none of her equipment was in yet, she had experienced a cave-in with a Trainer. They had no choice to navigate the caves blindly or risk running out of air if they stayed. That had been scary, and she wasn't going to let it happen to anyone else.

A beep and a shake from the device in her hand alerted her to a text message. She hit the button to look at it now and read the note, from one of the secretaries at the office. “run @ woods. u want?"

Ivy had to shake her head at the horrible grammar, moving her long red hair back and forth. What had they been thinking with text speak. It was almost impossible to understand some people's writing as it was.

She quickly sent back a “Sure. Meet them there asap.” and called to Haji, who was poking around in the sand near the hillside. “Ready for another run?” she asked, and the Espeon nodded, his split tail flicking. She had a feeling he was a little bored going around all the caves, though she knew he wouldn't ever show it on the outside.

The purple cat came close, and after he mentally told her to hang on, the air started to shimmer as he teleported them out. Through their mental bond, he could usually read her mind, so he already knew where they were going. When the atmosphere evened out, they were face to face with the entrance to the Woods. Trees lined up to form a single path into the dark.

It was a welcome sight. At least they weren't in Deckbi again.

She took a familiar seat at the bench by the Outpost doors, and like always, Haji jumped up to sit by her. She moved her long canvas vest out of the way and rolled the sleeves to her dark turtleneck up her arms as she settled. Her phone buzzed as the secretary sent all the Trainer information over, and the two looked at it as they waited for the person to show up. She made a mental note to wash her red vest later; inspecting the caves had gotten a bunch of dust on it. While it didn't bother her, it looked a little unprofessional for a Trainer visiting for the first time. Oh well.

Ryan looked at the entrance to the marvelous place and gazed at in awe. This was his first trip to the National Park, and he hoped to get a good reward from going. Th possible array of Pokemon spun through his head, and he decided that he was definitely going in. No backing out of it now.

Going to the National Park wasn't the usual thing for Ryan to do. He mainly battled other trainers with the Pokemon that he'd already aquired. This would, hopefully, be a nice change of pace.

"Maybe we'll find something really cool, like a Dwebble or something. You'd like that, wouldn't you, guys?" Ryan asked his duo of Pokemon. These two had been some of Ryan's best friends for a very long time. On his left, floating right beside him, was the ominous chandelier Pokemon, Chandelure. He was Ryan's starter that he had received at the start of his journey. He had monster-like power and a generally calm personality. In Ryan's arms was his beloved Qwilfish which he'd bonded with since he was around five years old.

Ryan and his passel of Pokemon waited by a location called the "Outpost," where he would meet the Ranger that would accompany him on his journey through the Woods. He didn't know what to expect of the Ranger. Would he be arrogant and nasty, or kind and caring? Heck ,would it even be a he or a she? So many questions filled Ryan's brain.

Then all of a sudden, he finally saw a bench. "How did I possibly miss that?" Ryan thought to himself. A young woman and an Espeon were sitting on the bench. She had long red hair and a dusty red vest. She also held in her hand a communication device. That gave it away: she was a Ranger, and hopefully, Ryan's Ranger.

"Um, excuse me, Miss. I was supposed to meet with a Pokemon Ranger at this outpost to take me through the woods. By any chance, would you be that Ranger?" Ryan asked, uncertain of the response that he would receive.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Haji alerted her to someone approaching, and after a few seconds, she opened up her mental senses and felt it too. Two forms actually, so one of them was a Pokémon. She finished scanning the contents of her phone as he walked up. She didn't want to overwhelm him right away and thought it best for him to seek her out at his own pace.

He spoke up. “Um, excuse me, Miss. I was supposed to meet with a Ranger at this Outpost to take me through the Woods. By any chance would you be that Ranger?”

She looked up and smiled, nodding as she got up. She held out a hand to shake. “That'd be me. You must be Ryan. I'm Ivy Frost, nice to meet you. I know this is your first time here, so if you have any questions, don't be afraid to speak up. Hey there,” she greeted his partner Pokémon, a Chandelure. The candle-shaped Pokémon sat hovering next to his Trainer.

Ryan himself was probably younger teens, though he was taller than she was by a bit. He had dark hair and a simple blue sweatshirt over a shirt and jeans; perfect for traipsing through the woods if need be. Sometimes she liked to stray off the path. He also had a backpack slung over his shoulders, probably with his supplies. She was glad to see him prepared.

She motioned him to follow them, and Haji and Ivy headed toward the Woods gate. The wrought iron was really old, but it barely creaked as she opened it for the others to go through. She redid the chain and key lock afterward, not wanting anyone to escape and send them on a wild goose chase again. Then they started down the straight path into the woods.

The overhead canopy blocked out a lot of light, but some of it filtered through in spots that decorated the earthy path with yellows and whites. She wondered if Ryan liked the trip so far, even though it had only just started. She heard a very faint rustling above them, following along as they went.

The came to the split in the path, but Ivy didn't ask him which path he wanted to take at first. Instead, she waited, and just like she thought, the Pokémon that had been following them jumped down in the middle of the Y path.

It was a small cream-colored monkey of sorts with dark brown socks on its legs, arms and curled tail. Two pointy ears stuck up on top of its fuzzy body. It had a pigs nose, and its eyes were a bright red. Then she remembered she wasn't supposed to look at them in fear of making it rage, so she tilted her head back to Ryan.

“Okay, here's how this works. You can either choose to battle this Mankey to capture it or if you're not interested, we can try to go around it. Sometimes it works, sometimes they're a little more persistent. If that happens, most people use a Pokédoll to appease the wild so it doesn't attack you. I've got a bunch of them.” She padded a pocket on her vest, though there were more dolls in other ones. “It's your call. So what'll it be?”

"Hmmm...well, I do like Primeape, and I'll most likely use it quite a bit if I catch it, and it's not found in the mart, so...yeah, I'll go for it," Ryan said.

Ryan pondered what to do next. Qwilfish was resistant to Fighting-type moves, as it was a Poison-type. However, Chandelure was no effected by Fighting-type moves, or normal type moves, which was most of Mankey's moveset. But what if Chandelure was too powerful? Would it faint the Pig-Monkey Pokemon in one hit? Not to mention, it was really sunny out, so that would power up Chandelure's Fire-type moves. If Ryan didn't catch the Mankey, he would probably regret it later on in life. This would also be Ryan's first Fighting-type Pokemon. Ryan had made his final decision.

"Yeah, why not. I'll fight the Mankey. Shouldn't be too tough. Afterall, it will be my first Fighting type. And I may as well catch it to commemorate my first National Park battle," Ryan said, trying to sound calm and collected even though he was anxious inside.

"I'll send out Qwilfish first to weaken it a bit. Qwilfish, try a very light Waterfall. Try not to knock Mankey out, though. We're trying to catch it here. Try to hit it just along the side to cause less damage," Ryan said to the pufferfish Pokemon. Ryan knew that Qwilfish had high Attacking power, so he gave Qwilfish this instruction in order to possibly save the Mankey from fainting.

Ryan was still wary of the Pig Monkey Pokemon, he had heard rumors that they would attack travelers at random and cause severe internal injuries: broken bones, pierced organs, and possibly even death. What if he underestimated the Mankey? What if he could take out Qwilfish with one powerful swing of its monkey-like fist? Ryan hoped for the best as Qwilfish began to make its first move on the Mankey...

Ryan thought about it for a moment and then spoke. “Yeah, why not. I'll fight the Mankey. Shouldn't be too tough. After all, it will be my first Fighting-type, and I may as well catch it to commemorate my first National Park battle.”

That sounded good to Ivy. It was a good way to start. She liked when a Trainer found something they wanted right off the bat. Mankey shouldn't be a super hard Pokémon to catch, so it was good practice for a newcomer. While it was a little more common, Ivy knew Primeape were good battlers.

He debated for another moment, and then decided what partner of his he was using. “I'll send out Qwilfish first to weaken it a bit. Qwilfish, try a very light Waterfall.”

Qwilfish was a type of puffer fish with tiny spines along its ball-like body. It was colored two tone, a creamy color and a blue, and it had a paddle-shaped tail sticking out to help it propel in the water. It was too bad there wasn't water here right now. The fish would be much more effective. She made a mental note to find one of the ponds while they were here.

The fish was probably going to have a little bit of a hard time moving on dry land, but hopefully the spines along its body and its tail would help it maneuver. It was only about the size of a basketball, so it couldn't be that heavy.

The Trainer ordered Qwilfish to hit the Mankey along the side to do less damage. While she was really sure nothing in the Park could be taken out in one hit, it was still good to be careful. Hopefully he wasn't too careful though. Mankey had a very wide variety of abilities.

The monkey, although following them, looked a little agitated that it had to battle. She thought that kinda rare. But he was stomping around, blowing out puffs of breath and looking frustrated. Then she realized he was using a technique to power itself up, something called Work Up. It used the added adrenaline and rage gained to hit harder with all attacks.

Then the Qwilfish went through with the attack. Like she thought, it pushed itself up from sitting on the ground with its spines, and it was able to shoot off, sort of like how someone would throw a basketball. He aimed himself as best he could and launched, sailing through the air in an arc. Ivy could see the small coating of water it got around it, adding the element to the attack so it wasn't just a normal tackle.

Since the Mankey was focused on other things, it either didn't see Qwilfish or didn't really care. The fish barreled into its shoulder, knocking it down as the fish sailed beyond it and onto the ground. He rolled a few times before righting himself and then looked back at his Trainer for more direction.

The monkey looked a little ticked off that it had been attacked. She saw its fists glow a dark shade, and then it launched itself at the Water-type, paying him back with kicks and hits for the damage. Qwilfish was knocked back a little more toward Ryan, causing dirt to fly up as he rolled. Finally he stopped, and the Mankey looked pleased, though it was breathing heavily.

Ivy thought that this one looked like it could take hits and dish them out all day.

The Mankey was much stronger than expected. This pleased Ryan, as he liked strong Pokemon. However, it may soon be too strong for Qwilfish. What if Qwilfish couldn't bring itself enough energy to perform another Waterfall? It'd need to be able to freely move, it couldn't be on land, and there was no water around. Then Ryan had an idea.

"Qwilfish, jump in my arms!" Ryan said. He ran over to Qwilfish, and he did as ordered. "Now Qwilfish, when you start to fall back to the ground, use Waterfall on Mankey. That should save you some energy. Is that okay with you, buddy?"

"Qwilfish. Qwil qwil," Qwilfish said, signifying it was alright.

Ryan then picked up Qwilfish by the non-poisonous tail and threw him up in the air like an olympic hammer thrower. Once he was at the highest possible altitude, he descended with Waterfall.

(OOC: Make sure to take a look at your entire move pool, and don't be afraid to get creative [like this post was pretty cool]. Using the same attack too much the same way in a row can result in penalties. Once you reach the MCR and when you think it's at a low enough HP, you can throw a ball. Make sure to specify which one it is though, and a good policy is to always use the lowest rank ball you're able to.)

Ryan thought about Qwilfish's slight disability and seemed to come to a solution. “Qwilfish, jump in my arms!” he called. The fish did, hopping up for Ryan to grab him. He must know where to hold so he doesn't get poked by the spines.

He then explained to the fish how he was going to toss him up so Qwilfish could use his momentum on the way down to do a better Waterfall. It was a little risky, since all Mankey had to do was move out of the way to send the Poison-type crashing into the ground hard. Ivy thought that Mankey was probably too interested in attacking though, being a ragey type.

Ryan then threw his Pokémon up by the tail, and Qwilfish soared upward, slowing down as he got to his highest point. Then he started picking up speed as he aimed to hit the Fighting-type.

Mankey kept his eyes on the flying fish. He clenched his hands and dug his feet in, focusing intently. He prepared himself for the hit, and then Qwilfish came crashing down. He barreled into Mankey's shoulder, throwing the small monkey off balance, sending him backward. It seemed he was expecting this though, because as he went flying back, Mankey pounded the ground hard.

A wave of earth surged up out of the ground and rushed the fish, much like she had seen from the equipment on construction sites. It swept over Qwilfish, knocking him back toward Ryan, looking a little sore. He shook off bits of ground that clung to him, and a look at the panting Mankey showed that he looked proud of his achievement. The monkey was looking pretty tired though, so Ryan would be able to capture it soon.

After contemplating what should be done next in this situation, Ryan decided that the battle was looking bleak for Qwilfish.

"Qwilfish, this isn't looking so great for you, come back and let Chandelure finish the job," Ryan declared.

"Now, use Ember very lightly so you don't knock it out. Got that, buddy?" Ryan was cautious because even with the very weak attack, Chandelure's Special Attack may be enough to knock it out.

Chandelure prepared the attack, and then shot the small Ember at the pig-monkey Pokemon.

Ryan didn't like the looks of how hurt Qwilfish was, so he called him back and sent out Chandelure to take its place. She didn't know if he brought any healing potions with him or not, so it was good to try and avoid as much damage as he could. She didn't think Qwilfish got any healing moves either.

Then Ryan gave instruction to his candle-Poke'mon. “Now, use Ember very lightly so you don't knock it out. Got that, buddy?”

Chandelure nodded, knowing his trainer wanted something very low key. With a little shake, two very small flames sparked from his candle hands and combined in front of him. It carefully floated over to the Mankey while it was getting up. The flame was probably no bigger than a softball.

Then, it touched the Mankey. His eyes widened, and he let out a howl at the heat. He got up and ran back and forth rapidly, sort of like they did on cartoons, making noise the whole while. Then he abruptly stopped, and though he was panting and huffing with his lack of energy, he glared at Chandelure. With a fire behind his eyes, he sprinted off after the ghost, his arms flailing.

When he contacted, there was just a flurry of punches, kicks, and bites. It looked like he was trying to beat him up the old-fashioned way.

When he stopped, he was still breathing hard, but at least he seemed satisfied that he got some vengeance.

"Okay, we've got the little Pig-Monkey Pokemon this time. I don't think it'll survive another hit, and it's at pretty low health, so I will throw a Park Ball at the little guy," Ryan bravely declared.

Upon pulling the green and white sphere out of his backpack, Ryan took it, looked at the Mankey straight in the eye, took aim with precision, and chucked the Park Ball straight at its pig nose. The angry Pokemon turned red, and vaporized into a crimson stream of light, and was sucked into the ball post hast. Ryan hoped with all of his might that it would work, as he couldn't afford to waste a ball or take yet another hit...

(OOC: Going camping later today, so might be a few days until I can post again. Also, you're not allowed to say the ball hits the mon. That's for the Ranger to decide. It's okay this time, but next time avoid it, since the ball could potentially bounce off, get knocked away, get crushed, etc, especially if the capture fails.)

“Okay, we've got the little Pig-Monkey Pokémon this time,” Ryan said.

Sometimes Ivy suggested times or moments when a capture would be optimal, but that was usually only when the Trainer couldn't tell. She preferred to let them figure it out on their own, though she normally said something before the wild Pokémon fainted.

Ryan took out a Park Ball, a standard-issue ball that was used for basic captures. He took a long look at Mankey and then threw the ball hard, aiming for his head. The Mankey saw it coming, but didn't knock it away. She thought that maybe it was too tired to do anything more.

The ball smacked the monkey in the nose, and then the creature was sucked up inside with a beam of red light. The ball fell to the ground with a soft plop, and it shook violently back and forth as the Mankey tried to escape. He couldn't manage it though, and a ping sounded through the area, signaling the capture worked as the center lit up in red.

“Way to go, Ryan,” she said. She went over to the downed ball and picked it up, dropping it in one of the zipper pockets on her vest for safe keeping. “As per Park rules, I'll hang onto this one and any others you catch until the run is over. Then you can pick your three and I'll release the others.”

She walked back to the Trainer, motioning at the path. “Well, we're at the junction now. There's two ways to go here, either down the light path or the dark path. It's your call.”

She motioned to both ways. One was dripping with sunlight. The trees were thinner here, and there was little foliage dotting the floor. The other was dark, with thick trees and heavy foliage that didn't let hardly any light in. Both ways offered many different Pokémon, so she waited for him to decide which way he wanted to go.

    (OOC: Oops, sorry about that...)

Ryan was ecstatic that he finally captured the Mankey. He breathed a giant sigh of complete relief.

Ivy walked back to Ryan, motioning at the path. “Well, we're at the junction now. There's two ways to go here, either down the light path or the dark path. It's your call.”

"Hmmm...well, the dark path looks much darker and has much more foliage, while the light path has much more sunlight. I would really like to find a Dwebble, and they're desert dwellers, so the light path would probably work better for finding them. So, the light path it is," Ryan explained. He was eager to see which Pokemon he would encounter next, if any at all.

"You ready, guys?" Ryan asked, looking toward Qwilfish and Chandelure. Qwilfish seemed pretty tired out, and Chandelure seemed to have retained a good majority of its health. Ryan hoped that the trip would pay off in the end...

Ryan decided to go down the light path, and she thought it a wise choice. The dark path tended to lead to tougher Pokémon almost immediately. At least with this one he could be eased into it. It would do to scare off the poor guy on his first Park trip. He was also looking for a Dwebble, so she made a note to stop by the sand pits to see if they could find one. Sometimes they were there, sometimes they weren't.

She and Haji led the way down the path, and she felt good absorbing the sun that made it through the canopy. It was a welcome warm, nothing like the humid air on Mount Deckbi. The path was even and the trees provided enough shade to be really comfortable, so they were able to walk along in peace.

Then, she caught sight of a reddish blur zooming around up ahead, and she motioned for Ryan to follow her as they checked it out.

As they got closer, she saw it was a Ledian doing all the moving about, zipping through a course it must've mapped out in trees. They were known to do that, being proud of their speed and maneuverability. It twisted and made loops and rushed through branches and leaves while they watched.

Then it caught sight of them, and when it was near them on the track, it came off and floated in front of them, its tiny wings working hard to keep it hovering. It panted a little bit, but she recognized the look in its eyes. It was measuring up the Trainer.

“Want to battle this Ledian? If not we can always try to escape or use a doll if that doesn't work. Sometimes they can be insistent.”

Ryan thought about the offer to catch the aforementioned Bug-Flying Type, Ledian. It would take quite a bit of effort to catch, as well as to keep: the little fellow was very rambunctious. Furthermore, a Ledyba could be purchased in the Pokemart for an exceptionally low price, and evolving it would be a walk in the park. Plus, that Ledyba would be used to life in captivity, but this Ledian seems to enjoy its forested abode. All of these factors led to Ryan's final decision...

"Well, I'd like to try and escape. After all, he's really happy here, and I could easily buy a domesticated Ledyba and evolve it if I wanted a Ledian. So, yeah. I'll try to escape," Ryan said.

“Well, I'd like to try and escape,” Ryan said. Though she didn't know of a place where they raised Ledyba for sale, they were still probably fairly easy to come by.

They waved to the Ledian, and it seemed to be satisfied that it wasn't going to battle today. It went back to doing its tracks around the trees, running an invisible course that only it kept track of.

They continued down the lightened path, taking a look at some of the downed branches on the forest floor. It was much cleaner in this area of the Woods since the Pokémon were more friendly over here. If she remembered correctly, they had one of the staff come in once a week and clear out some of the fallen sticks so it was neater. Knowing her luck, they would send her out here on one of the slow days. It'd probably be raining too.

A vine-covered tree was coming up on their left, and as they got closer, she saw one of the pieces open its eyes. Then a yellow bulb emerged from the vines, and with a wave of its two leaf-arms, it hopped down and onto the path. It had a wide pink mouth.

“Oh, there's a Weepinbell. Want to take a shot at that one?”

After thinking about the offer to catch the yellow and green pitcher plant Pokemon, Ryan decided that it is probably happy here, living free in the woods. Not only was there that fact, but Bellsprout, its pre-evolution, could be found in the Pokemart for a reasonably cheap price. Why would he take one Weepinbell out of its prefered natural habitat when he could just buy its pre evolution in the Pokemart? He found it a bit unfair for the Pitcher Plant Pokemon.

"Well, Ivy, I have decided to try and escape from this specific Weepinbell. It is happy here, and should remain free. So I'd like to escape, please."

(OOC: Escape failed :( What most people do for times they want to run is say they'd like to get a doll to use if escaping doesn't work so then an extra post isn't needed to get away and see a new mon. Then if the doll's used you subtract the 500 from your stats, and you can do the transaction in an ooc like this before your post like how we do transactions in the mart. It's up to you to use a doll or not, but if you continuously keep trying to run, more than likely the wild mon is going to attack, so you'd have to battle it off.)

Ryan wanted to leave Weepinbell in it's habitat, so he opted to try and escape from the plant. She nodded; she heard Bellsprout were pretty easy to get on the mainland, and he might as well save his materials for something a little more rare.

They tried to step around it, but as soon as their feet changed spots, the Weepinbell's leaves began to rustle. She was mentally telling it to stay put, trying to will it with her mind to not cause a fuss. It let them get about three steps away before it called out and detached itself from it's tree altogether. She could see the vines traveling the path beside them. It was going to try and trap them.

Ivy sighed. When Pokémon got fussy it made the run not go as smooth as she liked it. She turned to Ryan. “Well, looks like it's not going to let us go peacefully. Do you want to get a Pokédoll to distract it or do you want to battle it?”

Most people used a Pokédoll, either ones purchased before from the shop or from her on the run. Battling took up a lot of time, and then it injured the Trainer's Pokémon. Even as she thought it she could see the vines coiling by the side of the road, ready to bind something. A few people battled, but it wasn't common. It was Ryan's call though, so she was going to leave him to it.

    (OOC: 750-500=250, one Pokedoll.)

"Well, Ivy, yes. I would like to use a Pokedoll. I just recently spent some, so I only have 750, embarrassingly. But, the pleasant news is that you only need 500 Poke to buy a Pokedoll. I no longer wish to engage in combat with this Pitcher Plant Pokémon, so the Pokedoll will be helpful. Maybe now it will allow us to leave peacefully. Hopefully it likes it. It’s better than having Chandelure Inferno it to a pulp…” Ryan said.
He handed the money over to Pokémon Ranger Ivy to complete the transaction.

Ryan eventually decided on a Pokédoll, explaining that he didn't have a lot of cash on him. She nodded, hoping the rest of the wild Pokémon they encountered would be a little more behaved than this one had been. She thought he'd be okay even if he didn't have a lot of funds right now, since it seemed that Trainers magically got funds deposited while they were still in the Park somehow.

“Alright, not a problem,” she said. “I'll make a tab for you to settle up when we get back to the Main Outpost.” She took her phone out and opened the pre-made spreadsheets she had done when bored and found the doll row, marking a line to keep track. Then she took out one of the Clefairy-shaped dolls and pulled the string, blowing it up to a little larger than a basketball.

She saw Weepinbell's eyes grow wide as she did, and Ivy set the doll down within its reach. Immediately it latched onto it like a baby would a pacifier, and then it began to backpedal to its tree, taking the doll with it. Satisfied it would leave them be, Ivy led them on down the path again.

The path eventually split again, opening up into a square like section that led three other ways besides the one they came from. Movement on her right drew her eyes, toward the bamboo-like trees. A lot of them grew close together, so that area was like a maze. A purple fuzz poked out from one of the tree-walls, and a large pink eye stared out at them.

“Venonat!” it cried, and Ivy could make out the two antennas on top of its head and the small hands and feet embedded in its fur. It gave them a look and disappeared into the thicket.

“Want to follow that Venonat and battle? I hear those are kinda rare.” Ivy had always liked Venomoth, the evolution of the small bug. They learned a variety of powerful skills.

The decently sized Bug-Poison Type creature sneaked closer to our traveling party, and it cried out its name, Venonat. Ivy had told me that Venonat was rare, and that its evolution, Venomoth, was a pretty useful Pokémon. I currently lacked a Bug-type of my team, so I figured I’d try to catch it.

The creature had large, red, piercing eyes, two long antennas, two small pincher-like hands, a purple body…head…thing (Not sure where its body starts and head ends…), two long feet, and a round nose. It always surprised me that Venonat didn’t evolve into Butterfree instead. It was almost as if nature screwed up a bit. They look so similar!

Ryan turned to his passel of Pokémon pals and pondered which Pokémon to send in to battle. In the end, though, Chandelure was Ryan’s choice.

“Alright, Chandelure, use your Flame Burst attack!” Ryan proclaimed.
