    NOTE: Moving this run off of PE2K because it's been notoriously unreliable recently. This is a duplicate of the most recent post, but I'm not going to log it so everything's okay.

    The Stunfisk clearly wasn't moving at all - the pools were slowly draining backwards but I estimated it'd be a good five minutes before they were at a level where the Stunfisk would be visible again, and who knows what kind of mischief it'd get up to in that time.

    Toshiro growled softly and Elena nodded. "“Yeah, I see what he did there. Fred, watch out, he might be trying to make his electric attacks work! Start off with a Mud Sport. If he does fire off a thunderbolt or something, that should weaken it. Make sure to cover yourself in it too. Don't give the electricity anything to hang on to. After that, fire off an Ice Beam! Try to freeze the mud around the fish, and then use Earthquake. We're lagging behind in the battle, so it's time to pick up the pace. The quake should knock the Stealth Rock loose too. Be prepared for some sort of retaliation, and act as quick as you can.”

    Fred began to splash around, knocking mud and water everywhere, further devolving the battlefield into a quagmire of dirt, mud, and sand. I backed away to avoid being hit by the flying filth, but some small flecks managed to spatter my coat. I grumbled and wiped it off before washing my hand in one of the cleaner pools.

    A small haze of coldness spread out from Fred's mouth, and a lance of white energy blasted out and around, freezing over most of the pool. I heard some thumping somewhere, and my guess was that Fred had managed to trap it somewhere underneath the ice. The Swampert then reared up onto his hind legs and drove his forearms into the goop below him. All the ice shattered and mud spilt everywhere, slopping me again. Ice shards floated on the top of the water, but the Stunfisk still wasn't visible.

    "It must have Camouflaged itself or something," I said to Elena. "Thankfully, it won't be able to escape without revealing itself."

    The puddles started to shake, and the ground quivered underneath us. Fred suddenly sank a little deeper into the swamp. I wasn't sure what just happened, but I knew that the Stunfisk was setting up for something. The Swampert looked pretty-well stuck there, so Elena would have to get creative if she wanted to stay in the battle, let alone catch her target.

    Elena made a small 'yes' motion with her arm and fist as she saw Fred's move pretty much work the way she wanted it too. The frosty beam shot out from his mouth and touched the water surrounding the Stunfisk, crackling as it froze over into a solid chunk of ice. It didn't last that way for long though, as Fred smashed the ground with his fists for an Earthquake attack, cracking the ice once again and hitting the fish.

    The chunks of ice and bits of dirt and mud floated on the water's surface like a broken puzzle, and eventually the water lowered enough to where the fish should've been visible. However, it wasn't there.

    “It must have Camouflaged itself or something,” James said to her. “Thankfully, it won't be able to escape without revealing itself.”

    While the thought was reassuring, she wasn't going to bet all her eggs on that one basket. Pokemon could be tricky, and she was sure there was something it could do to keep itself hidden if they didn't do something about it. He could cloak himself in a wave, for example. Or maybe he could dig underneath the ground if he scooted close enough to the shoreline. Either one wasn't something she wanted to happen.

    What was worse, the fish didn't just hide. The water gained ripples as the water quaked, and then the ground rumbled similar to how Fred made it. Instead of a big attack though, it seemed to be a more concentrated technique, and she caught Fred sinking into the ground a good ways out of the corner of her eye. He had used the attack like a sinkhole to try and trap her Pokemon.

    First things first, she had to free her Swampert from the mud. While he didn't mind playing in it, and she knew he wouldn't panic or anything, she didn't want him completely immobile. She hadn't had time yet to teach him the Dig attack, which would've let him burrow under the ground and escape the trap completely.

    “Easy does it,” she called to Fred, just in case he started to get worried. His nature pretty much ensured he wouldn't, unless in very dire straights, but it never hurt to be reassuring. She needed to think of a way to turn the battle in her favor. Maybe because the fish was hiding it meant it was tiring out? She could only hope.

    At least the mud hadn't had time to set yet, since it had just been made. That would give them a little time to get out of it. She kept forgetting that this wasn't like her conflicts with the Leagues. She couldn't just blast her way out of sticky situations. She could risk hurting some innocent Pokemon or destroy part of the Park land, which she most certainly did not want to do. James would probably arrest her or kick her out or something in a heartbeat. He seemed sort of the impatient type, like he wanted to get going.

    Elena scoured her thoughts until she found a way to get them out of this. “Okay, Fred, we're gonna get you unstuck, but first use your Foresight to find where that fish is hiding!”

    Foresight was a move that didn't see much use from them. Normally it was used to identify ghosts when they went invisible or were playing tricks on everyone. It let the Pokemon get hit by attacks that would normally phase through them. This wasn't the same exact situation, but she thought it would work well enough for their purposes.

    In order to use this Technique, Fred would have to concentrate his senses and drop worrying about everything else. Then, he'd be able to pick up on the energy the fish was giving off in order to hide himself, successfully pointing out where he was. Thankfully, an incoming attack wouldn't bother Fred as much do to his relaxed state. He would be able to focus and pinpoint the fish if this worked the way she wanted to. Then they could get to freeing the Swampert and attacking the fish.

    “Okay, after that, whip up a Whirlpool around yourself! Knock that mud free!” she shouted next.

    The Swampert could draw the water from the ground and the pools around him, and then it would spiral up around him in a water vortex. In order to do that, a lot of speed was put on the turning water, so the force of it spinning could knock some of that mud away, leaving Fred room to move.

    “Once you've got the twister going and find out where Stunfisk is, turn the heat up with a Scald! Shoot that water toward him so you have time to get out of that hole in the ground.”

    Scald was a water-warming technique that was fairly new discovery-wise, coming from the Trainers over in the Unova region, a place she hadn't got to visit yet. It heated the water so it was boiling hot, and sometimes the attack was able to burn the opponent. She wasn't really looking for a burn right now, although that would help them capture the fish. She just really wanted to free up her Swampert, but she'd take anything Lady Luck threw her way.

    “Jol, jooool,” she heard from beside her, and she looked down to see Toshiro trying to tell her something.

    “I know,” she replied, “but we don't have a lot of other options right now. The Whirlpoool might not wash all the mud off of him if he keeps the water around him only. I didn't want to throw that in there too in case it was too much for him to do at once. We'll just have to hope that the Stunfisk doesn't try using the water to conduct an electric attack.”

    That had been one of her main concerns with this plan, but she just couldn't think of anything else right now. Hopefully whoever dictated the battle would smile fortune down on her this time.

    Toshiro grumbled beside her, and she patted his head to quiet him as she watched the battle continue.

    “Okay, Fred, we're gonna get you unstuck, but first use your Foresight to find where that fish is hiding!” Elena called out.

    The Swampert stopped pushing against the mud and hunkered down in it a little bit as he narrowed his eyes and looked around the muddy crater. Foresight wasn't a commonly used move, but it was a clever one. Fred was using minute movements in the earth and a very keen eye to locate the Stunfisk. I saw his eyes widen a little bit, and I knew that he had successfully located his opponent.

    “Okay, after that, whip up a Whirlpool around yourself! Knock that mud free!” Elena yelled. “Once you've got the twister going and find out where Stunfisk is, turn the heat up with a Scald! Shoot that water toward him so you have time to get out of that hole in the ground.”

    Water began leeching upwards from the mud, gathering into floating bubbles and streamers. They started to move quicker around Fred, and more water joined it, causing a small river to run in a circle around the Swampert. It then lowered into the ground, cutting through the mud like a hot knife through butter. Fred slipped a bit, but it didn't take long for him to start swimming through the whirlpool. When he was bobbing on the surface, he roared in the direction he had been looking before. Small wisps of steam began to rise off of the Whirlpool as it rose in temperature. A second roar followed the first, and a huge part of the whirlpool peeled off and splashed all over one of the crater's sides.

    All I could see for a couple seconds was frothing, steaming water, but when it all washed off down towards the bottom of the pool, the Stunfisk was revealed, laying on the sloping wall of the hole. It narrowed its eyes dangerously, and I felt something bad coming. I instinctively jumped in front of Elena and averted my eyes. A blindingly bright light emanated from the Wild Pokemon, but thankfully I wasn't looking at it. Fred's distressed calls indicated that he had been.

    I gingerly looked back towards the Stunfisk, and I noticed that it was curling over its side partly. Perhaps the Scald attack had hurt it more than I expected. It looked over at the whirling water that was hiding Fred with some serious hate in its eyes. It took in a deep breath and its beak-like mouth opened wide. A semi-gaseous purple liquid poured out and into the Whirlpool, tainting it. The water began to fizz, and the fumes of heat rising off took on a sickly light-pink-ish hue.

    (OOC: Whoops, little longer than I intended XD)

    Elena watched the steam billow out as it followed the stream of water toward the Stunfisk. As the water drained away, the fish showed up from his cover, hovering on the slope ahead. It didn't look happy.

    The Ranger must've sensed something, since he suddenly jumped in front of her. Generally that meant something bad was coming, so on instinct she was bringing her arms up to cover her eyes as she yelled out to Toshiro. Dealing with the Leagues had ingrained those sorts of reactions in them. Toshiro ducked down and tilted his head into her as a bright flash engulfed the field.

    She heard Fred cry out in distress and thought that he probably didn't cover his eyes in time. As soon as she could see again, she searched the field for her Pokemon. “Fred!” she called as she found the Swampert surrounded by his whirlpool still.

    She heard a faint call of acknowledgment coming from him, faded a bit from the rushing water, and that reassured her he would be alright. She breathed in relief. It wasn't going to be sunshine and roses though. That flash would probably throw off his aim a little bit, which would make it harder to hit the Stunfisk.

    Thankfully, she thought she saw a scalding mark on the side of the fish, indicating a burn. If that was true, they wouldn't need to wear it out much more at all. Either way was fine, since she planned on trying to capture it soon.

    The fish had a nasty look on his face though, as he glared at the swirling water around her Pokemon. Glenne was certainly going to have a time with this one. Then again, he would probably be nicer to her, considering they were the ones battling it. Still, it'd be interesting to hear her stories. Elena definitely wanted to be present for the first interaction.

    The Stunfisk took in a deep breath, and then a purplish liquid began to spill out of his mouth. It washed over the field like water, seeping into the whirlpool that was protecting her Pokemon. The water sizzled and spat like acid, and the steam created from the heat from the scald turned a smokey color, like poison. Sludge Wave then. Even though she knew what it was, that didn't make her very happy. If Fred stayed too long in that, he could get poisoned. She was fairly sure she had supplies to heal him from that, but she didn't want to put him through the torment at all.

    She was a little surprised the whirlpool was still up. She supposed she didn't tell him to take it down, but she guess he would've just ended it after the Scald attack since that's where he got the water from. It didn't really matter at this point. They could take advantage that it was still around once they got rid of the poison. Thankfully, she had a plan for that.

    “Fred, use Refresh! Get rid of those toxins before they can hurt you!” she called.

    Refresh was a purifying technique. It was mostly used on the user's own body by clearing the mind and concentrating on health instead of the torment caused by status inflictions. She found though, that when Fred used it, his body glowed a little, and the aura he generated hovered on top of his skin like a cloak. If the water was touching that, there was a chance it would come clean. It was also a long shot, but maybe by centering his body like that, he wouldn't be too blinded. They would need to be semi accurate with the next part of her plan.

    Elena realized she wasn't close enough for the next part though. She wanted it to be something of a surprise if they could manage it, and she had to shout a little louder to make sure Fred heard her over the rushing water. She didn't really want the Stunfisk to overhear, so she took an even breath and stepped forward.

    “Stay here, Toshiro,” she said as she neared the edge of the crater. It was muddy and slippery, but it wasn't completely filled with water, so she should be able to get closer. Before her Pokemon, or even the Ranger, could argue, she stepped carefully and slid down the slope.

    She felt the mud cling to her boots, and her gloved right hand was catching some of the muck as she held it back to balance herself as she descended. The material wasn't thin, so it would be easy enough to clean. The mud would probably wash right off.

    There was a sticky splat as she landed, and she frowned as flecks of mud splashed back at her. She felt some of the cool substance hit her face and fought not to wipe it off. She'd probably just smear it around and end up looking like a clown.

    She got closer to the rushing water, and it roared in her ears as it whirled around Fred. She called out to him to make sure he could hear her, and he sounded a little surprised.

    “I'm fine,” she said only slightly louder, not wanting to worry him. Being on the battleground probably wasn't the best idea, but she had looked for the simplest way to solve her problem. “I know there's a lot going on, but we need to be slightly tricky on this one. I think it's time to capture this fish. The only problem is that it's not going to just sit there and let us.”

    She hoped the fish couldn't hear them that well from the other side of the pit. She couldn't see him from behind the swirling water, so she'd just have to trust he was still over there. “Okay, Fred, we're going to get one more use out of this Whirlpool,” she said, eying the still slightly purple color. She hoped the purification worked. “Fire it off at the fish as accurately as you can. We're going to give him a choice. He can try to avoid the water, but I want your Yawn technique to be waiting for him if he does. Hopefully he'll choose damage or sleep, unless he does something tricky to avoid both.”

    She reached into her vest pocket with her left, clean, hand and pulled out a Park ball. She'd have to throw with her non dominant hand, but she didn't want the mud to end up making the ball stick to her hand or something.

    “Got it, Fred?” she asked. “I'll throw the ball right after you fire off that bubble.” Yawn was a move that most often caused the target to fall asleep if it came into contact with the thin, pink bubble that was formed. It traveled a little slower than normal attacks since it was so light, but it was a move that had come in handy for them many times before. Fred usually yawned himself to make the thing.

    She swung her arm to loosen the joints as she waited for Fred to do all the things she had asked. Even if the moves didn't come close to hitting the fish, maybe they would distract him enough so the ball would hit instead. She tensed her arm to throw as she felt Fred start to move.

    “Fred, use Refresh! Get rid of those toxins before they can hurt you!” Elena called out quickly.

    I couldn't see exactly what was happening, and it might have been a trick of the light, but it looked kind of like the Swampert began to glow a soft white. The Whirlpool surrounding it also began to gently glow at its base, and the glow moved steadily upwards. The purple of the poison became easily visible as the white chased it upwards, and finally the toxins left the Whirlpool in one huge cloud of purple vapour. The Whirlpool glowed once, and then the glow subsided. It was an impressive feat, and I was too busy watching it to realise that Elena had slipped down into the pit. I didn't worry - Elena gave off a vibe that she could handle herself, and Trainers could do pretty close to whatever they wanted in a battle, short of smacking the Wild Pokemon themselves.

    Elena was obviously giving some commands to Fred, but I couldn't hear what they were. All I saw was that she bent low and pulled something out of her pocket, and the second she did so the Whirlpool blasted towards the Stunfisk. I had to consciously keep my jaw from dropping - Fred was much more powerful than Smash to launch an entire Whirlpool of that size towards an opponent. The Stunfisk started flopping around, no doubt trying to move, but it couldn't do so for some reason. The huge water attack smashed into the Stunfisk.

    When the raging torrents subsided, the Wild Pokemon was flopping about weakly on the ground. Elena pulled her arm back and threw a ball towards the Pokemon. It was absorbed in the usual red flash, but the ball didn't shake, probably because of all the sticky mud. Nevertheless, the Electric-type was still captured successfully. I could tell because of the ding the small sphere emitted.

    "Great job," I called down into the pit, "but now you should probably do something about this fair-sized crater."

    I had to get the ball off of Elena - Ranger regulations - but I could wait for her to come to me. No way I was going down into that messy-ass pit without good reason.

    (OOC: Playing that other disk please :3)

    TP#16

    The whirlpool launched toward the Stunfisk, and Elena was pleased to watch it smack into the fish. He didn't even try to move out of the way. He could've been too tired. She threw her ball then, and the fish became cloaked in red light as it was beamed up into the device. The ball fell to the ground with a squishy splat, sticking to the ground as it sat in the mud. It didn't even shake before pinging that successful sound, and the girl sighed in relief.

    “Great job,” James called from the top of the hill, “but now you should probably do something about this fair-sized crater.”

    She nodded. “Absolutely.” The last time she was here, in Mount Deckbi, there had been a mud pillar that was formed from her battle with a Diglett. She had helped bring that battlefield back to normal too, so the habitat of the other Pokemon wasn't disrupted too much. It wasn't too big of a deal.

    She squished her way over the muddy ground to where the Park ball had fallen. She picked it up gingerly, trying not to get too much mud all over the place. She would have to give the ball to James when she got up the slope since she wasn't allowed to hang onto it as a Trainer. He didn't look too inclined to come down into the pit though, so it would have to wait. She kept the ball in her gloved right hand as she stepped carefully, trying not to fall.

    “Okay, Fred, you heard the man. Time to clear up this divot.” Before she could give him further instruction, she saw he had scooped up a handful of mud and was smiling at her. “Don't you dare,” she said with a smile and a nervous waver in her voice, not being able to help the grin on her face. It took off the stern edge, unfortunately.

    That wasn't deterring the mudfish though, and she shrieked a little as he launched the mud at her. She was laughing as she tried to dodge his throws, and she was proud that she only got a few splatters on her. The Swampert was pretty happy. It had been a long time since they battled for fun.

    When they were done, Elena hopped up on the shoulder he offered so they could clear up the pit. She instructed a Bulldoze, since that's what the Stunfisk had done to make the pit deeper in the first place. They could just pull the dirt the opposite way. Pulling it upwards wasn't exactly easy though, but riding the earth like a wave was pretty neat.

    Fred shot them up over the lip of the bowl, and Elena hopped off as he tried to finish making the pit as flat as he could. She had a feeling it wouldn't be perfect, but at least there shouldn't be a huge bowl by the path.

    While he was doing that, Elena went over to one of the pools that held clean water and tried to wash the Park ball off. When it was about as clean as she could make it, she walked over and handed it to James.

    “Glenne should be happy. She doesn't get out much. Oh,” she said, remembering something else. She dug in her inner vest pocket again for her Pokeplayer and popped the Stunfisk disk out, putting it in a different pocket. She then pulled out the right disk, labeled Barboach, and let it play. “There's one more Glenne asked me to look for. It starts out as just a plain Water-type, but it turns part ground like Fred.”

    Once that was settled, she brushed the drying mud off her vest and called Fred back to his Pokeball. Toshrio came back to her side, ready to continue on. “Okay, I'm ready to go whenever you are,” she said.

    OOC: yay for laziness

    ~~~~~
    Elena seemed more than happy to fix the hole the battle had carved out in the lakeside. Both she and Fred didn't take long to fill the pit with earth and mud, and while you could tell there had been a fight here, it wouldn't interfere with the wildlife at all. Finally, Elena cleaned up the ball in a small patch of water and handed it to me.
    “Glenne should be happy. She doesn't get out much," my Trainer explained as I slipped the ball into my pocket. Before I could reply, she started up again; "Oh, there's one more Glenne asked me to look for. It starts out as just a plain Water-type, but it turns part ground like Fred.”
    Elena ejected the partially-spent disk and slipped in another one, one marked "Barboach". I mentally kicked myself - I knew its evolved form Whiscash was part Ground, but I didn't know that Barboach wasn't. Toshiro rejoined Elena and the young woman returned Fred to his PokeBall.
    “Okay, I'm ready to go whenever you are,” she said.
    A strange, almost-chirpey noise emitted from the Pokeplayer. Barboach calls always sounded weird to me, considering they were fish, but whatever. The player made the noise again, and it was immediately mimicked. I looked over to the lake, and sure enough, a Barboach was jumping in and out of the water in a bid to get our attention.
    "Looks like we're not going very far." I grinned.
    (OOC: Yay, I don't have to rely on luck for once. Also, M please. And apparently Barboach is part Ground. I thought it said it wasn't, like Wooper. Oops :3 Ignore that other bit then.)
    TP#17
    The disk in the player chirped to mimic her next target, and she waited for James to lead them on. He didn't move for a minute though, perhaps giving the disk a chance to reach the Pokemon. She heard it play one more time before it went on the longer pause between calls. However, there was a chirping right after it, sort of like an answer.
    Elena turned to look at the lake as James did, and she was surprised to see a Barboach jumping in the water in order to catch their eyes. This one was about average length, which was a little longer than her forearm. He had a steely gray coat with three blue fins and a tail on the end half of his body. His whiskers were also in the same shade, and there were black dots all over, as well as a black wave along his side that looked a little like the Aquarius zodiac symbol or maybe a crack in the ground. That made her think.
    “Looks like we're not going very far,” James said, and she turned to grin, pulled from her thoughts. She liked when luck went her way.
    She knew who she wanted to battle with, but that design on Barboach's body kept bugging her. Still, she called out her oldest partner. “Okay, Koko, come on out.”
    She withdrew the other Pokeball from her vest and let it drop to the ground. A tan-colored feline appeared in a flash of light as the ball bounced off the ground and came back to her hand like a boomerang. She pocketed the device as the cat stretched.
    The Persian sunk down on her front two feet and pulled her body out, making her seem much longer than she was. Her front claws dug into the soft sand around the lake and her tail bobbed back and forth slowly. She looked over her shoulder and called out a greeting. Elena could tell she was ready to do something.
    “Hey there, Koko,” Elena said, smiling at her first Pokemon. “We found another one Glenne was looking for,” she pointed out while gesturing to the fish waiting for them in the water. She had wanted to try out the Persian's Thunderbolt in this type of setting for a while now. The last time they were here, they were on Mount Deckbi, a place that wasn't really affected by Electric-type moves.
    Now that she had time to think about it though, she didn't think it was going to come in handy in this situation either. Weren't these Pokemon able to sense earthquakes and such with their whiskers too? It would make sense that they were part Ground-typed then.
    “You know,” she said out loud, in James's general direction. “I don't think Glenne was exactly right. I think Barboach are part Ground too.”
    The only way to find out was to try, so that was her next step. She needed a plan after that though, since she'd look silly if all they did was a move that was not effective.
    “Koko,” she said, after thinking of something. “Use your Hidden Power to take that fish out of the water when he jumps. Blow it up onto shore if you can.”
    The Persian's power could manipulate the wind. Each Pokemon's Hidden Power was different, and each used it in a different way. She had seen elemental orbs formed before, and she had also seen earth erupting from the ground. The cat's was more subtle though, since she could take hold of the air and twist it to her liking. If this worked right, she would wait until the fish flopped about some more and then jerk the wind in their direction, sniping the fish out of the water. If he was part Ground-type, he probably wouldn't have much trouble with this, water creature or not.
    “Then try a Thunderbolt, but don't test it if he stays in the water. It's time to see if this thing really is a Ground-type,” she said. She didn't have a Pokedex like some of the other Trainers, so she couldn't check using it. She had become a traveling Trainer in a rush and not the proper way. If the fish really was a Ground-type, the electricity shouldn't bother it at all. “After that, do a U-turn to wear him down a little more and get back here. We won't be done yet, though.”
    U-turn was a pivot technique that let a Pokemon rush in close and then use the foe as a kickboard to change directions. It was usually used to recall that Pokemon and send out a new one, but Koko would be fine to take whatever the fish could throw for now, since she was the freshest of her partners.
    She nodded to her cat as Koko looked back at her, and then she felt the air start to shift as the Persian charged up for her move.
    Elena grinned back and reached for a PokeBall on her belt. "Okay, Koko, come on out," she called and a Persian revealed itself. The cat swished around gracefully, stretching its body out and kneading the ground with her claws. She meowed to Elena, who instantly smiled back.
    "Hey there, Koko. We found another one Glenne was looking for," Elena said to the cat. Koko purred and curled her tail around her feet, waiting for an order. The young girl watched the Barboach jump in and out of the lake for a few seconds before turning to me.
    “You know, I don't think Glenne was exactly right. I think Barboach are part Ground too,” Elena said to me.
    "I think you may be right," I said slowly, not wanting to offend her. I had been pretty sure that Barboach was Ground-typed. It was true that there were a few Water/Ground families where the lowest-evolved form was Water only, but I didn't think the Whiscash family was one of them.
    “Koko, use your Hidden Power to take that fish out of the water when he jumps. Blow it up onto shore if you can. Then try a Thunderbolt, but don't test it if he stays in the water. It's time to see if this thing really is a Ground-type,” Elena said to the Persian. “After that, do a U-turn to wear him down a little more and get back here. We won't be done yet, though.”
    The cat stretched out languidly and then darted towards the lake, faster than I would have expected. She yowled when the Barboach jumped out of the water, and the fish suddenly sailed towards the shore, like it had been hit by an invisible tennis racquet. The fish landed on the hard shore and flopped around helplessly. Koko advanced, her hackles raised, and suddenly a huge stream of yellow electricity poured out from the red jewel on the Persian's forehead. It flowed over the Barboach - the fish disappeared entirely amongst the writhing sparks.
    When the Thunderbolt dissipated, the fish was still jumping on the ground, seemingly completely unharmed. "Well, I guess that cinches it," I said.
    Koko didn't waste any time looking over to Elena - she ran towards the Water-type and pressed down on it with her two forelegs, using it to push off against. The Persian landed back in front of Elena and turned around, ready to attack again. It was only then that I noticed that the Barboach's jumping and flopping wasn't random - it was well-timed and rhythmic. The Barboach was probably powering itself up somehow.
    Koko waited patiently, like a true fisherman, until the Barboach jumped out of water. Just like they planned, the cat called out as the winds kicked up, and the gusts caught hold of the airborne fish and sent him toward the shore. She then fired off a Thunderbolt as she tensed her shoulders. Her fur prickled as she sent off the electric attack in a rush. It engulfed the fish, but when the harsh light faded, the Barboach was still flopping about like he hadn't felt a thing.
    “Well, I guess that cinches it,” James said from the sidelines.
    “Yeah, I guess so. I'll have to let Glenne know when I bring her the Pokemon,” Elena replied. With that small mystery solved, she could now focus on really wearing it out.
    It wasn't that she wanted to get out of the Park as soon as possible. She really did like it here; she just got worried when she was away from the mainland for too long. Since the Park was on a bit of an isolated island, there was some travel time required. Sure, she had Horus for a Psychic-type Pokemon, but that distance was way too far for the little bird to transport them. The boat ride was nice, but it was a little time consuming.
    She knew that Glenne, Damian, or even Kyra would call her if something really bad happened, but she couldn't help but worry. She had started worrying the day she became a Pokemon Trainer, and she didn't think it was going to stop any time soon. At least not as long as the Leagues were running around.
    Koko kicked off of the fish and rushed back to her, waiting for another command. Elena was glad the cat was so fast; she was going to have to move around a bit more with the next thing she was planning.
    The fish wasn't immobile though, much to her surprise. It seemed he wasn't totally out of place without the water. The flops he was making seemed technical, like it was part of a system. She had only read up a little about the fish before venturing here, but she didn't think it could learn many empowering moves.
    “Must be a Dragon Dance...” she murmured as her words trailed off. That would be a problem if they let him keep doing it since it would center his strength and increase his speed. Even if he was out of the water, it could mean trouble.
    “Okay, Koko, we gotta step it up a notch. Let's start Nasty Plotting, and we'll go from there,” she said. When the Persian really put her mind to it, she could come up with some devious ideas that helped increase her damage output, since she was applying herself more creatively.
    Unfortunately, Koko didn't know any Grass-type moves at the moment, which would've helped against the fish. Elena thought the only one she could learn was more physical-based anyway. That was okay, though, since the cat had a few other tricks up her sleeves.
    “I got it,” she said as she snapped her fingers together. “You're gonna have to be a little like a ninja on this one though. Use your Swift attack to kick up the dust on the ground and rush by the fish as you barrage him with the energy. If you can stay hidden in it you can avoid a full on attack.” She wanted to lessen the damage her cat took if she could, since she might be needed in battle later. “Make sure you get between him and the water if you can. If he tries to make it back out to it, blast him with an Icy Wind. That should keep him in place for a little bit, at least long enough for us to come up with a counter plan.”
    Swift was a pretty fast attack that formed energy to shoot at the foe. Since the energy tended to resemble tiny stars and the fact that they were so fast, it sort of made the user seem like a ninja if they moved along with the technique. It was something Koko knew naturally, so she had a lot more experience with using it. Icy Wind was a backup really. If she had to, she'd breathe out a wave of cold ice that should help slow the fish down a little.
    Really, all of this could fall apart and not work out like she planned, but that was all part of battling. Being a Trainer was always a rush, and honestly, she probably wouldn't have it any other way.
    Koko rolled her shoulders as she meowed with a little twang in her voice, indicating that she had started thinking outside of the box. With any luck, this would go smoothly.
    “Yeah, I guess so. I'll have to let Glenne know when I bring her the Pokemon,” Elena replied. She watched the Pokemon closely as it bounced up and down in its rhythmic pattern and the Persian returned to her side. Elena seemed like a methodical battler, but not a traditional one - that move with Hidden Power versus the Slowbro showed that she wasn't afraid to run with her instincts and try out new things.
    “Must be a Dragon Dance...” the young woman muttered under her breath, which was the same conclusion I had come to. “Okay, Koko, we gotta step it up a notch. Let's start Nasty Plotting, and we'll go from there.”
    The cat sat down on its haunches and watched the Barboach silently. Her eyes narrowed and I could almost see the evil plots and idea bubbling out of her head. All these ideas of possibilities would assist the Normal-type in the manipulation of energy-based attacks - limber minds made great attackers.
    “I got it,” Elena said suddenly, snapping her fingers at the same time. “You're gonna have to be a little like a ninja on this one though. Use your Swift attack to kick up the dust on the ground and rush by the fish as you barrage him with the energy. If you can stay hidden in it you can avoid a full on attack. Make sure you get between him and the water if you can. If he tries to make it back out to it, blast him with an Icy Wind. That should keep him in place for a little bit, at least long enough for us to come up with a counter plan.”
    The Persian rolled her shoulders lithely, preparing for action, and she let out a meow that was deceptively plaintive. Silver energy began to wreathe itself around her neck, and she darted towards the flopping fish. The silver nimbus resolved itself into a cloud of stars, and some of the stars shot into the ground, kicking up a spray of dust. Koko barreled into the dustcloud, hiding from the Barboach inside. The Whiskers Pokemon started shooting small blasts of water into the dustcloud, but it looked like most of them missed Koko. When the cloud reached the flopping fish, a huge storm of the white stars blasted out of the dust and struck the Barboach. Koko then emerged gracefully and spun around, placing herself between the fish and the lake. She looked slightly disgusted, and I could see why - dust was streaked all along her coat, and there were some wet spots where the dust was turning into mud. Apparently a couple of the Water Gun shots made contact.
    The Barboach evidently realised it was in some danger, because it began trying to flop back towards the lake. However, Koko was ready - she took a deep breath and exhaled a fine blue mist towards the fish. The Icy Wind struck the Barboach and knocked it back onto the ground - the attack was deceptively powerful. Small icicles grew all over the fish's body, but that didn't stop it from flopping around. In fact, it did the opposite. It jumped high up into the air and slammed down into the ground. A large crack appeared in the ground and began winding its way towards Koko. Unfortunately, the Persian wasn't fast enough to dodge - the crack ran straight underneath the cat and her rear legs fell down into the hole. Her front paws scrabbled on the ground, but when she unsheathed her claws she managed to grab hold of some grass to keep herself from falling in completely. This was good and bad - the Earthquake was obviously designed to distract, so Koko wouldn't have taken much damage, but if Elena didn't act quickly the fish would be able to return to the lake.
    (OOC: I figure I'd let you get some wages this time, since it's been.... a long time.)
    TP#19
    Koko performed swiftly and perfectly as always, and Elena expected nothing less of the cat. Technically the Persian was her starter Pokemon, since she had been the family pet before she left home. However, she had discovered the cat's knack for battling before she even became a Trainer. The girl knew she would be great at it ever since Koko had defended her from those League goons inside her burning house. They had both been terrified and hurt, but they had both been brave enough to let them escape.
    She may interact more with some of her other Pokemon, like Toshiro, but Elena knew the cat wasn't going to get jealous. The bond they had was more special than something that could be tainted over petty jealousy. On some level, they wanted to please each other both in battle and being the only family they had, and because of that, the girl fully trusted what the cat could do.
    Koko slid through the dust, attacking the fish and moving right where she was needed: in between Barboach and the lake. The cat was streaked with a little dirt, and she could see where patches of her fur was wet, but she was okay. She may put up a fuss and act all prissy, but Elena knew that during battle, Koko didn't care about any of that.
    “Nice work!” Elena called, thinking of what they should do next.
    Then, the fish moved quickly. He flopped into the air and came down hard, and as he did, the ground shook. It happened too fast for the girl to call out a warning. The earth cracked, heading straight for her cat. Koko was quick though, and before she could be swallowed up by the Earthquake, she held on to some of the thin foliage with her front feet. The fish began to move again, and she knew his destination. If he got back to the lake, they'd be in trouble.
    “Hang on, Koko,” she called again, reaching in her vest pocket for the cat's Pokeball. They had ran out of time, and if she didn't try to capture the fish now, there was no telling how much of a problem they'd have with it. She wasn't risking the cat getting hurt any more, and she couldn't let the fish escape, so that only left capture as her option.
    She held the ball out as the red beam of energy shot out toward the cat, sucking her up and returning her to the device, as safe as Elena could make her. “You did great,” she said quickly to the ball as she put it away. Then a little louder she said, “Toshiro, stand ready!”
    Elena then tried to hurry as she put Koko's ball away and pulled out a fresh Park Ball. She lined up her shot as best as she could. She didn't have a whole lot of time to sit there. She wished it luck and launched it, hoping it would get to the fish before he made it back into the water.
    "Hang on, Koko!" Elena called out as she reached for the Persian's PokeBall. She held the sphere out towards the cat and the red laser light lanced out, striking the Normal-type on its muscled shoulder. The Persian was converted into red energy and it returned to the ball. I wasn't expecting Elena to do that, but it certainly was a good way to get Koko to safety.
    Elena thanked her Pokemon and told Toshiro to stand ready in case of any attacks, but it sounded like she didn't think that would be necessary. I soon found out why - the young woman pulled out a Park Ball and tossed it towards the Barboach, which was still hopping towards the water. Unfortunately for the poor fish, the sphere tapped it mid-bound when it was just about to enter the water. The Water-type was absorbed into the ball, which promptly fell onto the ground at the water's edge. It shook for a few moments before laying still.
    "Congratulations on your capture," I said to Elena as I walked over to pick the ball up. When it was secured, a little bit of movement caught my eye. Hiding behind a medium-sized rock was a small wobbly Pokemon with ridges on its body and strange tufts on its head.
    "It looks like that battle had a spectator," I called out. "Feel like battling a Shellos?"
    The Park Ball clicked and Elena sighed to herself in relief. If nothing else went right today, at least she had found two of the things Glenne had been after. That gave her another excuse to go see her friend too, since between all the League skirmishes, there wasn't a lot of time for leisure.
    “Jol...” Toshiro called, looking off to the side.
    Elena turned, and it seemed that there was no rest for them now either. She heard her Ranger call out, “It looks like that battle had a spectator. Feel like battling a Shellos?”
    The girl took a look at the small, pink slug. It was cute in a way, with its tentacle-like afro on its head. However, she knew Glenne had one of the West Sea variants already, which were blue, and she herself had Fred that was similar in typing. Besides, she wasn't sure she wanted to battle immediately after the last one. Energizer warriors they were not.
    “Nah, that's okay,” she said. “The team's looking pretty full already, but maybe next time. I can get a doll if need be.”
    “Nah, that's okay,. “The team's looking pretty full already, but maybe next time. I can get a doll if need be,” the young girl offered.
    "Let's just wait and see, I doubt this little one has the power necessary to stop us by force." I grinned.
    It was true, the Shellos wouldn't have been able to keep us from physically moving onwards. However, it had an arguably more successful tactic - when we tried leaving, it burst out into tears. Moving closer would stem the crying, but it would just start up again when we moved away. Quite a clever tactic indeed.
    Finally, Elena seemed to get as annoyed as I felt, and she motioned for me to throw a doll to the Shellos. I did so, and it squeaked happily. This time, when Elena and I moved away, the Shellos was too busy inspecting the doll to complain. I motioned with my neck and we both ran for it, trying to remain as quiet as possible.
    When we were a safe distance away, Elena passed me a small wad of cash. I looked at it distastefully before putting it away inside my knapsack.
    "You'd think that stuff would all be digital by now," I grumbled.
    A large splash interrupted my whining and I jumped away from the water just in time to avoid being showered. A long serpent-like fish Pokemon rose out of the water then landed back in, flicking its purple-tipped tail in greeting. It rose out of the water again, twisting and dancing presumably for our benefit.
    "Wow, you don't see many Gorebyss around," I said admiringly. "Want to try and capture it?"
    To their dismay, when they tried to leave the Shellos behind, it burst into tears. It was a little dramatic, and it caught Elena a bit off guard. She didn't have such an emotional Pokemon. Toshiro, being so serious, was the exact opposite. He didn't look too amused at the hold up.
    The only way the pink Pokemon would be appeased was with a Pokedoll. It would dent her wallet a little, but they didn't have time to sit here all day. Besides, now that she wasn't constantly paying the League with her earnings, she could save a little more for stuff like this.
    They continued on down the path when a splashing sound alerted both of them. Her Jolteon tensed up and bristled, ready to fight, but Elena was more calm. “Wow,” she said, after a thin, snake-like Pokemon showed itself. It gleamed pink and had a purple-dipped tail. It twisted in the water, like it was showing off, trying to impress them.
    “You don't see many Gorebyss around,” James said. “Want to try and capture it?”
    It was tempting, but she didn't know if a flashy Pokemon like that would be suitable for her lifestyle. Most of her teammates had to be pretty hardy to withstand the constant conflicts with the League and the other stuff they managed to get into. A rare Pokemon like that was more suited to a collector or someone who specialized in the Water-type.
    “I'll pass,” she said almost regretfully. “I don't think I'd be able to give it the lifestyle it needs. Same deal as last time.”
    “I'll pass,” Elena said with a strange catch in her voice. “I don't think I'd be able to give it the lifestyle it needs. Same deal as last time.”
    As we walked on along the river's edge, I thought about Elena's statement and who the girl actually was. It was pretty clear that she'd seen some horrible things in her life and she was actively fighting something. For a second I wondered why she was here in the Park, but then I thought about it a different way. People needed to wind down every now and then, otherwise they went insane. By coming to the Park, Elena could relax with her Pokemon friends and also train and expand her team all at once. It was a win-win situation for her.
    Being lost in my thoughts, I didn't realise that the Gorebyss had left until a couple minutes afterwards. I blushed slightly and looked away from Elena, being sure to avoid eye contact. The waves on the large river sparkled as they reflected the sun, and it was only because I was looking at the water that I saw the Mantyke swimming around happily underwater. It looked like it was enjoying the sun, even through the liquid it lived in.
    "How about a Mantyke?" I asked Elena. "Feel like one of those?"
    The river sparkled as the sun struck the water, and Elena couldn't help but take in the atmosphere. She didn't really have time to appreciate the little things like that while she was on the mainland, and she was glad they had come here. Everyone could use a break, even if some, like Toshiro, wouldn't admit it.
    James got lost in thought for a moment as the Gorebyss decided to leave. Elena made a small wave as it flicked its purple-dipped tail and swam away. When the Ranger came back into focus, he seemed to catch sight of something underneath the water.
    “How about a Mantyke?” he asked.
    Elena came closer to the river's edge to get a glimpse of the small manta ray Pokemon. It was gliding through the water in different patterns. The light streamed into the water and reflected off its blue skin in abstract ways from the currents in the liquid.
    She shook her head. “That's okay. Hopefully we won't need to use a doll to get away if we move before it sees us.”
    Elena shook her head to show that she wasn't interested the Flying-type. “That's okay. Hopefully we won't need to use a doll to get away if we move before it sees us,” she replied.
    We both backed up a way from the shore to minimise the chance of the Wild Pokemon catching sight of us. It shouldn't have been able to through the waves and the sunshine, but it didn't hurt to make absolutely sure. Whatever the reason, the Mantyke never knew we were there.
    A couple minutes later I saw an interesting rock formation on the beach, a hundred metres or so up. It was large, maybe the size of a small shack, but it had one large spire sticking up into the air. It was also surrounded by spikes, which had to have been carved, because rocks didn't normally form shapes like those outside of caves. I was so excited to get a closer look at the structure that I tripped over a circular brown rock and landed face first on the ground. I came up spitting sand and hoping that Elena wasn't laughing too hard. It was only after I wiped my eyes that it occurred to me: the brown rock I had tripped over was now scuttling around anxiously.
    "That's explain why I didn't see it - Kabuto are excellent at camouflaging themselves," I said with a slight blush, trying to save my dignity. "Want to take a crack at it?"
    Elena followed the Ranger's lead and backed up when he motioned her to. If they moved quickly enough, there was a chance the Mantyke wouldn't see them from beneath the water's surface. The sun was shining brightly, making rainbow flashes on the liquid, and hopefully the glare would aid them.
    Fortune was smiling on them again, as the wild Pokemon didn't come out of the water to engage them. They continued on after that, Elena breathing in the beach scent that the Lakes provided and loving it. They came across other body of water, but this one was edged by a pretty nice beach. It was mostly golden yellow with flecks of brown in it. Not only that, but it had a pretty cool conglomeration of rocks.
    James seemed pretty interested in them at least, but unfortunately, in doing so, he didn't watch where he was going. His foot hit a dark brown stone, and the man went flying forward, ending up eating sand. He coughed a little as he got up, and Elena tried to hide her smile behind a hand.
    “That explains why I didn't see it,” he said. “Kabuto are excellent at camouflaging themselves.” He was probably trying to save face, so she didn't push him on it. It would've made an interesting picture for his coworkers though. “Want to take a crack at it?”
    Elena shook her head, again. “Nah, that's okay. Kabuto is more along Glenne's specialty. What do you say little guy?” she asked as she bent down to the Rock-type's level. “Can you let us pass?”
