    OOC: Let it begin. I am ready. ._.

    “Nah, that's okay. Kabuto is more along Glenne's specialty," Elena said. I could tell that she was hiding a laugh behind her hand. "What do you say little guy? Can you let us pass?”

    The Kabuto's scuttling became a lot less agitated, and it finally slowed in front of the young girl. Surprisingly, the Rock-type stood up on two legs and licked Elena deftly on her cheek. It then lowered itself back to the ground and scuttled into the water. It could have been my imagination, but I thought the Kabuto might have been fleeing because it was embarassed.

    I waved Elena forward anxiously as I wanted to get closer and see the rock. I couldn't look at anything else. It looked kind of like one of those conch shells that crabs wore, except infinitely more spiky. The rock completely dominated the beach - I couldn't imagine anyone swimming or sunbathing here. They'd be too intimidated by the structure.

    "I wonder how this was formed," I murmured, running my hand over the mostly smooth surface. The structure was one large rock, so it had definitely been carved by someone or something. I walked around to take a look at the other side, and there was an opening into the rock. I wouldn't have fit, but Elena might have. I knocked on the rim of the dark hole, and it seemed solid.

    "Maybe this was the home of an ancient fossil Pokemon, one we haven't discovered yet," I mused. I pulled out my PDA and marked it on my GPS map so I could come back and take a better look later. For now, I was on an Expedition with a Trainer, so I couldn't hang out here to slake my curiosity.

    Just as I started to walk away, I heard a raspy sound that reminded me of rickety wooden carts being dragged over concrete. I turned around just in time to see a long cream-and-red-coloured Pokemon emerge from the hole. It slithered out onto the beach, and I saw that its tail was mostly blue. The Pokemon looked me over without any emotion on its face before turning to Elena. It regarded her for much longer, and eventually raised its eyebrows. I could see its eyes soften and its posture relax, and I knew that was as much permission as it would ever give.

    "Wow, you're incredibly lucky," I said to Elena as I backed away from the Water-type. "This Milotic is requesting a battle with you."

    (OOC: You're ready, but am I? Lol Yay for word vomit. Female please. Also, from your run in the Woods, I keep trying to call Toshiro Cole instead >.<)

    TP#24

    Elena crouched down to her feet as she asked the little Rock-type her question. She couldn't remember if Glenne had a Kabutops, the evolution of this one, or not, but if she recalled, they were pretty fierce battlers. Glenne preferred digging up precious stones and gems over battling, but Elena did know the other woman could put up a harsh fight if she needed to. Some of the Ground and Rock-type's she owned were among the hardest to raise, and all of them listened to her friend without hesitation. A Kabutops seemed right up her alley.

    The Kabuto ceased its agitated scuffling as it took notice of her. It slowed, and suddenly perched up on its two hind claws to lick her on the cheek. Elena smiled at it as she watched it continue on its way and scurry into the water. It was cute. She could see why Glenne liked them so much.

    Toshiro didn't say anything beside her. He just watched the Rock-type silently. She couldn't exactly tell if he was jealous enough, but she thought he probably wasn't. More than likely he was just making sure it didn't try to hurt her being that close. She patted his head affectionately. Being quiet didn't make him difficult, she just had to find other ways to understand him.

    She got up as James waved her over. He was still looking at the interesting rock formation on the beach. It sort of looked like a seashell, except there were more spirals jutting out at points. Parts of it were pretty smooth, and it had a unique blend of colors along the sides. It was pretty huge. There was barely any room on the beach for anything else. It cast long shadows along the sand as well – that made for poor tanning spots.

    “I wonder how this was formed,” the Ranger said more to himself as he examined the rocks. Elena wondered that herself. It didn't look man-made, and if she remembered correctly, Rangers tried to keep habitats as natural as possible to imitate a real environment. The exception was, of course, the Outer Heavens, but she had heard something had happened to it since she had been here last. All of the artificial platforms and implanted ecosystem crashed down without any warning. Maybe it had been a bad omen?

    The Ranger kept looking, finding a carved out hole on one side. He rapped against the surface with his knuckles, but she didn't hear the tell-tale echoing that would suggest it was hollow. The structure was all solid rock. “Maybe this was the home of an ancient fossil Pokemon, one we haven't discovered yet,” he said then, with a little notch in his voice that said he would not mind in the slightest if he was the one to discover it first. He took out a PDA from one of his pockets and went to mark the spot. Maybe he had just found a new side project.

    He finished with his device and put it away almost reluctantly. She wouldn't mind spending a little more time out here, but he probably had other things to do. She probably shouldn't linger too far from the mainland for very long either. James turned to continue on down the beach when a raspy sound made him pause.

    It sounded a little familiar to her, but she couldn't place the sound. Was it the call of a Pokemon or something else?

    As the Ranger whirled back toward the rock, Elena saw a cream-colored Pokemon emerge from the hollowed out place. It slid out onto the beach, leaving divots in the sand as it freed its entire body. The sun glinted off the smooth, pale skin and glittered off the blue and pink shades of its scales on the lower half. A four finned tail fanned out on the very edge as all of it finally left the rock structure. It had to be over twenty feet long. She felt Toshiro stiffen next to her. Maybe he felt threatened by the snake's mass.

    The Pokemon seemed to ignore James for the most part, but when it looked at her, she was struck by the weight of that gaze. The sea snake righted the front half of its body so its pointed horn on top of its head stuck straight up. The pink eyelash-appendages wrapped gracefully back, and its long pink hair flowed elegantly to the sand below. The deep red eyes regarded her silently, and Elena treed not to feel intimidated.

    Eventually, the snake raised its eyebrows and relaxed a bit. The girl felt Toshiro's muscles unclench as well as his nails disappeared back into his paws. She could hardly stop looking at the Water-type.

    “Wow, you're incredibly lucky,” James said, breaking her out of her trance a little. “This Milotic is requesting a battle with you.” He stepped back to give her room to decide and battle if she chose to.

    “She's beautiful,” Elena said, knowing the image sparked a faint memory inside her mind.

    She reached into her tanned vest pocket, grabbing a small object tucked into one of the inner zipped folds. She pulled out a small oval that sat in the palm of her hand. The sun shined along the pink and blue surface, in the same shades as the Pokemon that stood before her. She had seen one of these before, and now she remembered where.

    Like the half sunken ship where she had met Toshiro, the Pokemon scale came from another run in with one of the Leagues. She thought it must've been the Gold League, since that was the group she had less knowledge about. By the time Silver had recruited her, the two fractions had already split from the whole they once were. Silver was hunting her for different reasons, but it didn't really matter. Eventually they would have to take them both down.

    She was on the Abandoned ship on route one-oh-eight, between Dewford Town and Slateport, helping one of the researchers there look for Deep Sea Scales and Deep Sea Teeth. There were rumors that the ship had been holding a few of them as cargo, but since it crashed, pieces of the ship had sunk to the bottom of the sea and scattered the contents. The researcher's Pokemon hadn't been able to find the scales and teeth alone, and since funding was short, he hadn't been able to get a team to help him look. He couldn't dive himself or risk his equipment malfunctioning or being stolen. There were a few Trainers exploring in the area.

    At least, that was the situation when she found him. The scientist had been pretty frazzled and stressed out by the time she got there. He told her that he would have to abandon his project if he couldn't find any of the objects he was after. Funding wanted proof to continue.

    She and Fred had been surfing that day, scouring the routes for any traces of the Leages or anything suspicious in general. She had just taught the Swampert how to dive for long periods of time, and since she had taken some of the underwater equipment from her last encounter with the Gold League, she offered to go down and have a look herself.

    He didn't hesitate to accept her offer, and after a few minutes of describing just what she was looking for, she and Fred set off into one of the cracks in the ship bottom. She had scooped into the bag she had anything that was interesting, deciding to go through it better once she got back to the surface.

    When they returned, the scientist was delighted to find that she did find a couple teeth. She thought she had found the right scale too, but when she showed him the same scale she still possessed, he told her that was a Milotic scale. It was strange, since they were super rare and not found often in the wild since they tended to live on the lake bottoms.

    Task done, she and Fred left the ship, getting back into the water to continue on to Dewford town. They hadn't gone far from the ship when she found another scale floating on the surface of the water. It matched the one of the Milotic she already had. After a little looking, she found another one, and in a jagged line southward were even more. Curious, she decided to follow the scale trail and see what was up. That's what she was out there for anyway, to look for anything out of the ordinary.

    Along the southern edge of the route she found what she was looking for. There was some sort of building on a raised platform there. Pillars that trailed all the way to the bottom of the water supported the stand. From the look, she couldn't tell what the place was used for, but she guessed it was some sort of research facility. It wasn't on any of the maps she had seen though, and she had a habit of collecting those and marking off places she had been or cleared of League members.

    She and Fred tread carefully after that, since they weren't sure if the inhabitants were friend or foe. With her luck it wasn't going to be anyone friendly. It hardly ever was.

    There were a few ladders leading to outside doors on the platform, but they had avoided those. Instead, they searched the bottom from the water's surface until they found a hatch underneath. It led them into an open space filled with water. It was littered with boxes and other things that either fell or were discarded. The place was definitely closed off though, so she thought that it could be a place for observation or experimentation.

    People walking on the railed deck above had them ducking behind the crates and low in the water so they weren't spotted. It was a good thing the Swampert could swim a lot better than she could. He ended up helping her float for a long time.

    She carefully watched the small group walk around the room, making sure to stay low and unmoving so they weren't spotted. Fred may be able to stay underwater for longer periods of time, but her breathing device hadn't had a chance to recharge from their diving expedition, so she couldn't.

    From the white lab coats, she knew they were some sort of researchers, but she still couldn't tell who they were a part of, if anyone. She didn't recognize any of the faces, but that wasn't surprising. She didn't know many executives and commanders in Gold.

    The water was a great soundboard though, and since the three men above her weren't speaking very quietly, their voices gladly bounced off the steel walls and calm water.

    “The specimen seems to be adjusting at a rapid rate. Faster than we expected, in fact. Shall we move on to phase three?” one of them suggested. She couldn't see his face, only the ends of his coat, but he sounded pleased.

    “Yes, proceed at once. Release the Sharpedo,” one of the others responded.

    She was aware of two very important things in that moment. One, that there was about to be many threats very near to them, all with razor sharp teeth and rough skin. She remembered other encounters with the mini sharks, and none of them had been pleasant. The other thing was what really worried her though.

    There was already something in the water.

    Despite her brave facade in coming to this place to investigate, the fact that something could be right next to them in the dark water chilled her. She looked around nervously even if it wouldn't do any good. She even focused on the body parts that were already in the water, as if she would be able to feel the water currents of anything moving close to them. She tried not to make too much noise as she looked around in vain.

    “Time to go,” she whispered to Fred as a grate on the opposite side of the compound started to whine has it was being hauled up. The Swampert barely made a ripple as he gently floated backward from the half-submerged crate they had huddled behind. They needed to get back to that hatch and away from this place before the sharks alerted the scientists to intruders. Or they could just chew them up. Either one was bad.

    Elena kept her gaze looking behind them as they made their way to the hatch. When they had the door open and Fred was working on moving out into the sea, she saw something. There was a ripple in the water, closer to where they had been hiding while listening in to the people. She heard the chains continue to grind, and that panic that they needed to hurry almost caused her to ignore it.

    A second later, red-tinted hair appeared from under the water. It fanned out around a girl that rose to look at them. She stopped when the water reached her nose, and her wavy hair formed a circular curtain, like a giant lily pad. They looked at each other for a few seconds, and Elena got a good look at her piercing green eyes.

    Before she could say anything, there were steps on the path above as the researchers started to walk back around. The girl in the water jerked as she looked upward and then disappeared underneath the pool. Elena was floating back as Fred tugged her out, but she didn't miss the splash as the girl re-emerged from the water to swim the other way.

    A pink and blue tail flopped into the water.

    At the time, she her brain hadn't really connected with what she saw. Even now it was a little hard to believe. She kept the scale, though, and she wasn't likely to get rid of it. One of the leagues had been experimenting, and she had seen the results of that.

    Elena hadn't really thought it was possible to splice to species together, but those scales were too real to be anything else. What cemented the idea for her though was when Kyra had reported back after investigating a compound where Rockets had once been stationed. She said she encountered her former partner, only he was changed. She said he had started one of the machines simply by touching it, and that when he touched her shoulder, the shock had knocked her out for over four hours.

    It was scary to think about, but just because they didn't want to accept the possibility that the League science experiments were working didn't make it untrue. Instead of ignoring it, they had to find a way to fight back. Since they knew little about putting people and Pokemon together, the first step was to study.

    Now she had a chance.

    She looked into the Milotic's deep eyes as Toshiro shifted beside her. She wasn't sure what the beautiful creature was thinking, but perhaps soon she would learn how to understand her. She wasn't just interested because of the link to their problems with the League; she genuinely was impressed by the sea snake. Elena had heard of its power in battle, and it wasn’t' easy to take one down. She would fit in with their lifestyle fairly easily.

    “I'd love the chance to battle you,” she told it, hoping that her expression followed her words. She was incredibly lucky to have run into her. She looked down at the electric fox beside her. “You got this for now?” she asked.

    Toshiro nodded as his fur prickled. He had used a bit of energy in that battle against the Slowbro, but he had a little time to rest. She was more than likely going to use a couple of her partners to battle this one. Milotic was fresh, and all of her Pokemon had already fought. She was going to have to be careful on this one.

    The Jolteon stepped in front of her slightly, eying up his opponent with a careful look. Elena did the same. Milotic was probably faster than she looked, despite her bulk. She was a snake after all, and the beach sand would be easy for her to slide across, just like those serpents in the desert. Still, Toshiro was fast too, and she might need him to run circles around the Water-type.

    Elena was fairly confident that Milotic could battle decisively too, so she'd also have to watch for that. She didn't want any of her partners to suffer a burn or get poisoned if she could help it. As per Park regulations, she didn't think she could step in and heal any of them until the battle was over, in order to make it fair to the wild Pokemon she was battling. She could always switch them out, but then that limited her battle options.

    What she really needed was a plan. She wanted to avoid giving Milotic some sort of status right off the bat, although later that might come in handy. Milotic had an ability that caused her scales to become like steel, which would make her harder to hit. She wanted to wittle the sea snake down a little more before she attempted to make capturing easier.

    Of course, there was the chance that she was more focused on her other ability, Cute Charm, too. In fact, Elena was pretty sure that would cause more problems than hardened scales. That one had the chance to infatuate foes if they came into contact, and even though Toshiro was as serious as the grave, he was still susceptible to it.

    She could almost imagine the Jolteon staggering around the field being lovestruck. Almost.

    She sighed quietly to herself as she thought. She'd have to take this pretty seriously for Toshiro to comply, since he got a little testy otherwise. Thankfully, that wasn't going to be a problem once she thought of what to do.

    The first issue was the water. Since they were on the beach, that was pretty close. She didn't want to give the sea snake the upper hand right off the bat, so they had to have some way to keep her out of it. It was too bad she hadn't gotten around to teaching Toshiro Magnet Rise yet. The magnetic field could've came in handy.

    Then it hit her. She could do something similar and receive almost the same effect.

    “Okay, Toshiro!” she called with a renewed vigor. “Let's start this off. The first part is a little tricky, so pay close attention.”

    The Jolteon tensed up and perked his ears, ready to hear the command. She could always count on him to be ready to battle. He wasn't even showing any signs of fatigue from the battle earlier, even though she knew he wasn't operating at one hundred percent.

    “First we need to distract her. We need a little bit of time to set up, even though I know you're fast. First, cloak your Pin Missiles with a Thundershock. Fire them at will!” She was already starting to doubt commanding so many things right off the bat, but it was the only plan she had, so she had to go with it.

    She watched as Toshiros fur began to sharpen even more, and then there was a faint cackle of electricity flowing through the hairs. Elena took a wise step back. If she touched him now, he would shock her on accident. Those fine hairs would fire at the sea snake like a machine gun, and since the stings would be pretty rapid, it would hopefully jostle her enough for the next phase of the plan.

    “After that, you need to dash around her, setting up your five Light Screens as you go. We're gonna try something similar to what we did against Slowbro,” she continued, knowing from the flick of his ears that he was hearing her while preparing his first move. “When you make a circle, fire off a Thunderbolt between them. Since we don't have Magnet Rise in our arsenal, we'll have to make our own forcefield.”

    She was really wary about trapping Toshiro in with the sea snake, but she couldn't see many other options. If she managed to get to the water, he wasn't going to be able to keep up with her using his ice technique, and Koko didn't have any way to maneuver the water at all. Fred could, but Milotic would swim circles around him, and they wouldn't be able to help him if he got in a pinch. If Toshiro started to struggle, she promised herself she would pull him back.

    The Jolteon's fur had spiked drastically, and the random sparks were coming off of him in tiny flicks. Now was as good of time to start as any.

    “Ready?” she asked. Toshiro nodded his head once sharply, and she took a deep breath. “Alright... now!” she shouted.

    "I'd love the chance to battle you," Elena said reverently to the Water type. It nodded once and then backed up across the sand without turning around. Elena looked down at her Jolteon and asked him if he was okay to battle. Of course, he was.

    “Okay, Toshiro, let's start this off," Elena said loudly. "The first part is a little tricky, so pay close attention.”

    The young woman started detailing an incredibly convoluted plan, and I phased out a little bit, preferring to watch the gentle movement of the waves on the lake. I wasn't a huge fan of swimming in general, but skinny-dipping was an enjoyable pastime, especially if pretty girls came along. Elena was a bit too young for that, and besides, Ivy probably wouldn't be impressed.

    "Ready?" Elena called out. Even though Toshiro nodded, I got the feeling that she was asking for my benefir. "Okay, now!"

    It was kind of exciting not knowing what Elena's plan was, because I could watch it unfurl without distraction. Some of the Jolteon's spiky fur began to glow brightly. I couldn't actually be sure what colour it was, but if I had to choose I would say a very weak green. Electricity was crackling all around the Jolteon as well. Toshiro launched a cluster of glowing darts towards the Milotic, and I was mesmerized by the electrical sparks the darts were trailing. The Milotic quickly spat a circular blast of water towards the dart cluster. The two attacks collided barely a foot in front of the Milotic's face.

    Toshiro hadn't wasted that time, though. He'd created a pink Light Screen where he was standing, and then darted off around Milotic. He fired another dart attack and then made another Light Screen as the Milotic turned and retaliated. This happened again and again, and the only difference was that the Milotic got faster, and when Toshiro had finished a fifth Light Screen so that they were arranged in a rough circle, the Milotic's water attack caught Toshiro in his side. The fox Pokemon was knocked onto his side, but he got up pretty easily. He howled, and as he did so electricity exploded outwards. It crashed into the Light Screens and started rebounding from barrier to barrier, creating a pseudo-cage three metres high.

    The electricity didn't seem to daunt the Milotic, though - moving quickly, it whipped its tail around and grabbed Toshiro, squeezing the Electric-type like a snake. Once the Water-type had a good grip, it started swinging Toshiro around and banging him into the ground. I winced as I watched through the lightning bars - I wouldn't want to be either of those Pokemon right about now.

    Battling had always been a double-edged blade for Elena. While she loved the rush of it and loved that it demanded her to always take things to the next level, she couldn't always prevent that wave of anxiety wash over her. There were still times when her hands went clammy and she had trouble taking in air, the times when she doubted how she was even standing there in the first place.

    She wouldn't let this be one of those times she almost drowned. She wasn't in that burning house anymore, no matter how the scar on her arm throbbed underneath the glove covering or how she sometimes still felt that stab of panic like she was backed up against the wall. Not all of her fights were for survival like that, especially not here in the National Park. Neither of the Leagues were here, and if she had anything to say about it, they never would be.

    Still that rush of both positive and negative feelings flared up, and she responded to it. Her hands weren't sweaty yet, but her whole body was tense from her shoulders down to her feet. She trusted her Pokemon completely, but she didn't always trust in herself. It had been a hard leap to go from normal child to Pokemon Trainer at thirteen, but she didn't really have a choice. She was a late bloomer as it was.

    Even if it was hard sometimes, she didn't regret it.

    Toshiro's fur began to cackle as she came back to the battlefield, responding to the electric current he was sending through it. The tips of his coat spiked, and he began to glow a faint greenish-yellow color that she associated with powering up. It was sort of like how really hot flames were blue instead of red.

    With a short call, the yellow fox braced himself in the sand and lurched as tiny electric darts began to shoot from his skin. Pin Missile wasn't really designed to be powerful, but she hoped it would do what she wanted. The cluster shot fast, but the Milotic revealed she had speed stored up in that snake-like body too.

    A whoosh of water came from her mouth, forming ovals as it collided with the Jolteon's attack. She recognized it as a Water Pulse. Milotic was almost not fast enough, since the two attacks clashed together mere feet in front of her. The two powers sizzled and steamed, and Elena was glad she wasn't that close.

    Toshiro went straight into the next phase of their plan without wasting any time though, exactly how she wanted him to. He was usually no-nonsense on the battlefield thanks to his more serious nature, and it paid off a lot. He certainly got more things done than some of her other Pokemon.

    The fox dashed off after a thin rectangle of almost-transparent light appeared where he had been standing. When the sun glinted off it of, it looked a little pink in color. That was the first Light Screen. He rushed off in his circle after that, and Elena started to chew her lip a little as she watched the Milotic turn with him. It was easier for the sea snake, since Toshiro had to run a much bigger circumference than she did.

    Toshiro launched off another flurry of Pin Missiles as he paused to make another energy screen. Again, Milotic fired off a Water Pulse, and Elena noted that the blasts were starting to collide closer and closer to Toshiro's side of the field now. She was catching on to what they were doing, but it was too late to call for Toshiro to change the plan.

    Soon, what she feared would happen did. The last blast, as he cemented the last screen in place, he wasn't able to fire back at fast enough. The screen appeared behind him, and it was too bad it wasn't in front. The rings of the Water Pulse came crashing into his side before he could move. Elena heard his yelp as he was swept off his feet.

    Thankfully, he didn't look too hurt. He regained his feet and shook himself off much like a dog, sending water droplets flying. Those that didn't sizzled against his fur as the electricity interacted with the wet. Then, he braced himself and howled, and a Thunderbolt came down from the sky, striking the first Light Screen he had made.

    Then, just like she planned, the sparks reflected off all of the energy surfaces, and it threaded from screen to screen, forming an electric cage. The pink coloring shifted to yellow as the plates glowed. The bolts streaked across a little higher than her waist. It wouldn't last forever, but it guaranteed that Milotic wasn't getting into the water without getting hurt. Elena wanted to keep this fight on land.

    Unfortunately, the only problem with setting up such an elaborate plan was that it gave the Milotic plenty of time to formulate something of her own. She ignored the thunder barrier (which made sense, since Elena was pretty sure the snake wasn't going to try crashing through it first thing) and darted toward Toshiro.

    Elena winced as the sea snake wrapped her body around Toshiro quicker than he could get away. The blast from the water had made him a little disoriented. With a swing of the Milotic's tail, she heaved the yellow fox into the air and slammed him down into the ground. The earth rumbled under her feet.

    “Toshiro!” she called helplessly. The small fox wasn't very bulky, meant for speed and power instead of defensive might, and she knew he would be out of the fight soon if she didn't so something. Even more worrisome was the rock conglomeration that Milotic had been staying in. That had made it into the electric barrier, and if the sea snake thew Toshiro into it, he was a goner.

    She couldn't call him back. Milotic's tail was in the way, and the electrical fence she had set up might even block the rays from his Pokeball. She couldn't let him suffer though. She wouldn't let him.

    Her mind whirled as she thought of a solution. She needed one and she needed it right now.

    Then her brain clicked, and she didn't hesitate to call out to her Pokemon. “Toshiro, fire off a Discharge!” she yelled simply.

    Discharge was an electrical charge that came from within and arched out in different directions. It had a tendency to even hit one's partner in a double battle, so it wasn't used often for that reason. Too many other things could be hit. Here though, that wasn't going to be a problem. In fact, the more directions it went, the better. If all went well, Toshiro would release a spark that engulfed his whole body, and since Milotic was wrapped around him, it could do a lot of damage. She really wanted the sea snake to drop him so he could get away from her.

    The excess electricity would be stopped by the force field they had set up, so she didn't need to worry about endangering the other Pokemon in the lake or the group of people outside of the barrier. What she really hoped for was Toshiro's ability to kick in.

    It was known as Volt Absorb, and it did exactly that. If any Electric-type attacks were thrown his way, he tended to absorb the energy and use it to restore his strength. He had lost a lot of it thanks to this Milotic and the battle before with the Slowbro. If some of the Discharge bounced off of the Milotic, he could use it to restore his own power so he could battle longer.

    It wasn't a perfect solution, but it was all she had on short notice.

    Watching the battle was awesome, sure, but it was much more interesting to watch Elena as she watched the battle. Her stoic persona began to slip as Milotic and Toshiro started exchanging attacks, and I noticed her hands start to clench. She winced and swayed slightly as Toshiro set up the barriers and retaliated, and when the Jolteon was finally struck by Milotic's Water Pulse she let out a cry. It only got worse as Milotic slithered over and wrapped the Electric-type in her coiling body before slamming him around.

    Elena seemed to freeze up for a second, and the Water-type took this as a chance to get a bit more damage in. She continued bashing Toshiro into the ground, but she also rubbed him hard into the ground, causing him to emit squeaks of pain. It took me a couple seconds to realise that the Milotic was actually grinding pieces of that sand into Toshiro's fur - this would inhibit the flow of electricity from the fox's skin. Very clever.

    Milotic was only able to do this three times before Elena called out her next command. "Toshiro, fire off a Discharge!" she yelled.

    Almost immediately, Toshiro screwed up his eyes and sent a blast of electricity traveling in all directions. The Milotic made a strange whub-whub-whub sound as it was fried. All of the electric waves went through the Water-type and continued onwards. The Milotic hadn't put Toshiro down yet, so he continued to fire waves of electricity, and when one of the waves struck the lightning barrier it reflected backwards, so the Milotic was getting sandwiched between two electrical currents. Finally, it let go and retreated away from Jolteon to the other side of the cage where the chance of getting shocked was less. The Discharges continued to reverberate, and when they struck Toshiro he absorbed them back into himself. Granted they probably weren't as refreshing as usual, but they were certainly better than nothing.

    It occurred to me that usually in Park battles, the Trainer had to fight to get a hold on the Wild Pokemon, but in this scenario the Milotic was trapped. It had nowhere to run to and very little choice in attacks. This meant it would be feeling cornered, and that was when Pokemon were the most dangerous. It'd be interesting to see what Milotic did next.

    Toshiro let out a call as he fired off the Discharge. The electrical bolts went in all directions, and the Milotic cried out too. Elena felt a little bad for it, but she promised to make it up to the sea snake once she captured her. If she captured her, that was. Besides, Toshiro wasn't getting out of this unscathed. What happened in battle stayed in battle. There wasn't anything personal about it really.

    Finally, after being shocked enough, Milotic let go of the Jolteon. Elena let out a sigh of relief as something inside her unclenched. The battle was far from over, but now that Toshiro could move, they stood a much better chance. She hated being cornered. It brought back too many bad memories.

    The sea snake retreated toward the far end of the electrical force field, and Elena reminded herself that the Milotic was probably feeling trapped as well. They were both going to fight relentlessly then. She didn't particularly want to back the Milotic into a corner, but they really had no other choice here. She would be too advantaged if they gave her the range of the lake and the beach combined. None of her partners was going to be able to keep up with her in the water.

    Toshiro absorbed the stray bolts that bounced off the electrical fence, and although he didn't look a whole lot better, it was better than nothing. He was still moving, and that was something, since he was so frail defensively.

    Now she had to think of what to do next. She was a bit at a loss. None of her Pokemon were really that suited to battle the Milotic right now, decently tired as they were. Plus, that force field they made was going to hurt her own Pokemon if she sent them through it. Well, almost all of them. She really wanted to call Toshiro back, but she wasn't sure who to send in to replace him.

    Koko was definitely out. They would have to do some maneuvering to get her inside the field, and then once she was there, she would be trapped. All it would take was one good hit from Milotic to send the Persian barreling into the electricity, and she was having none of that.

    Fred was a decent choice, she supposed. His Ground-typing made him resistant to the electricity, and he was much heavier than Toshiro, so the sea snake wouldn't be able to throw him around as much. Unfortunately, Milotic outclassed the Swampert as far as movement went, and Elena was sure the snake had some more tricks up her proverbial sleeves. She eventually wanted to send in Fred, but she was going to have to wait. Toshiro was going to have to hang on a little longer.

    She wanted Toshiro to keep his distance from the snake in case she wanted to grab hold of him again. Elena looked at the rock formation inside the arena and thought that maybe she could use it.

    “Toshiro,” she called, “I want you to use that pile of rocks. Get on top of it and use Reflect to hide your location! We'll have to be tricky and careful at the same time.”

    The yellow fox's ears perked up at her order, maybe thinking of his own way to do what she had asked. In theory, it was supposed to be a smoke and mirrors trick. There were five Reflect screens that normally appeared for the technique, although each Pokemon used it differently. She hoped that by setting up the screens strategically, he could hide exactly where he was because the light and other things would reflect off the surfaces. It might not work, but it might bide them a little time if the Milotic decided to come up after him.

    “Okay, once you're set with that, fire of a Thunder long range! Don't over power it, since we don't want to knock her out, but don't be afraid to hit her either. She's got a lot of energy left.”

    She heard Toshiro call out in agreement before he started kicking up sand to reach the rocks. Milotic was pretty bulky, so she didn't think he would knock her out, especially since she cautioned him. Thunder would let him keep his distance, and it gave him a better range. It did take a second to charge up though, and there was always the chance he could miss if Milotic started moving too fast. Still, she was running out of options, and she had to let Toshiro battle a little longer before she called in someone else. Milotic needed to be worn out some more before it was safe for Fred to take over.

    “Toshiro, I want you to use that pile of rocks. Get on top of it and use Reflect to hide your location! We'll have to be tricky and careful at the same time,” Elena called out.

    The small electric fox took a quick look at the Milotic before darting over to the structure that the Water-type had emerged from. He jumped up above the opening and sprang from spike to spike, eventually hiding somewhere near the top. Blue sparks started crawling out of his skin, and they formed a rectangular shield in front of him. Instead of staying bright blue, however, the Reflect's edge faded and reflected the sparking electricity of the cage, which meant it was really hard to spot Toshiro. Even I could barely do it, and I had my Aura Reader with me. Considering that Milotic lived underwater and so wouldn't have the best eyesight, it wouldn't have a hope in hell.

    Just as I considered it, the Milotic slithered forwards, moving its head up and down in an attempt to try and locate its opponent. It circled the stone but didn't have any luck in finding Toshiro. If I was the Wild Poemon right about now, I'd be getting pretty angry.

    “Okay, once you're set with that, fire off a Thunder long range!" Elena yelled over the crackling of the electric fence. "Don't over-power it, since we don't want to knock her out, but don't be afraid to hit her either. She's got a lot of energy left.”

    Toshiro didn't reply, but I could have sworn the crackling of the electricity grew louder. Slowly but surely, the electricity making up the fence started to extend upwards towards the sky. The crackling yellow lines of energy started to reach for each other, creating a dome over the top of the fences. The Milotic looked upwards in shock before closing her eyes. I didn't know what she was doing until I glanced over at the lake. A huge chunk of water was levitating up into the air and hovering towards the cage. It was almost like a race - which would fire first, the Thunder or the water attack?

    Turned out it was the thunder. A massive white thunderbolt burst out of the very centre of the dome and it plowed into the Milotic, sending it flying away from the stone structure. Unfortunately, Toshiro hadn't quite been fast enough - the water was over the stone structure when the Milotic had been blasted, so it fell down through the electrical grid and poured over him. He yelped in distress as the force of the water pushed him off of his haunt. Luckily, he managed to hang on with his paws, so he avoided being washed down to the ground.

    Not all of the water splashed down onto the sand. Some small rivulets floated through the air towards the Milotic as the Water-type picked herself up. The thin blue lines wove themselves into circles around the Milotic's slender body. I didn't recognise the technique, although it was obviously defensive. No doubt the Milotic would have to continue to play defensively - she still didn't have any idea where Toshiro was hiding. On the other hand, the fox was running out of tricks, and he couldn't stay hidden forever.

    Toshrio disappeared as he jumped up onto the rock structure, hidden behind the reflective energy provided from the Reflect screens. Then, the hair on the back of Elena's neck prickled as she felt the energy all around them increase. The Jolteon must've been charging up his Thunder. It really was a sight to behold. It took a lot of energy, so she didn't say to use it often.

    As the energy charged, she noticed that the lake behind the electric cage started to ebb and flow faster. The girl looked at the Milotic, and it did sort of look like she was concentrating. In response, Elena saw the water start to rise and rush toward shore. She figured the wild Pokemon wasn't going to just sit around while they attacked. She just hoped that Toshiro was fast enough to get his Thunder off and manage to handle the water attack.

    Then, the energy came to a surge, and a blinding white thunderbolt came crashing down on the electric arena. The currents there probably helped direct the huge bolt. It struck the Milotic and sent her sprawling away. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to stop the water attack, and as the sea snake lost control of it, it washed over the bank and into the arena, drenching the rocks Toshiro was standing on.

    She heard him yelp as the force behind the water threatened to send him flying out of the arena, but he managed to hang on to one of the rocks, somehow still on the structure. He scrambled back up to disappear behind his screens again, and Elena breached a sigh of relief. He wasn't out yet.
    She know that he was nearing the end of his limits though, and she was going to fix that.

    The leftover water from the Surf attack stayed pooled on top of the sand. As Elena watched it, it seemed to be drawn backward by some invisible force. It didn't head back to the lake, however. Instead, it formed into a circle that surrounded the Milotic.

    Elena made a face, but it wasn't really directed at anyone. That was a technique called Aqua Ring, and if she didn't stop it, Milotic was going to start recovering a lot of energy. It let her absorb water through her skin. If she could find some way to slow that down, they could maybe end this quick.

    “Alright, Toshiro, time to get you out of there,” she called to him, not knowing exactly where he was.

    She pulled out one of her Pokeballs and called out the Pokemon inside of it. In a flash of light Fred, her Swampert, joined her. He stretched and made a noise as he adjusted to being out of his ball. Then he looked at the battle curiously.

    “Toshiro's just about had it,” she told him, gesturing toward the field. “That Milotic isn't done yet, though, and you're the only one that can take his place in there because of the electric current. Your Ground attributes should protect you from it.” She watched as the large Ground-type absorbed her words. “I'm going to call him back, and when he's passed the electrical barrier, I want you to go in, okay? But be ready when you do. She'll probably be chasing him with an attack, so prepare to throw up a Protect barrier as soon as you're in.”

    Fred nodded, and she turned her attention back to the rock structure. “Okay, Toshiro, you've done great. Let's let Fred take over from here, but give that snake one more good hit. Fire up a Volt Switch and combine it with Thunder Wave. We need to stop that Aqua Ring, and the only way I can think to do it is to thicken her scales so it's harder to absorb water. Her need to block the status should hopefully make her focus on that or be more vulnerable to paralysis. Then get back here!” she called.

    If all went well, Toshiro would put more effort into paralyzing the sea snake. At this point, she didn't mind if that made the Milotic harder to hit since she was a little lower on energy. It might not have been smart, since the Aqua Ring was up, but she needed to try and stop it. She had a feeling that the Milotic could stall much better than they could since she had reliable healing. There was no time for that on Elena's side.

    She couldn't see Toshiro, but she heard the cackling as his fur prickled up with energy. Volt Switch worked a lot like U-turn in that it let the user hit the foe and backpedal from it, using the other Pokemon like a spring board. That would give Toshiro momentum to get back over here, allowing Fred to take his place. Hopefully too, Toshiro could absorb some of the energy from the electric fence in case he needed to battle again some time in this run. She wanted to finish this encounter off with Fred though.

    “Okay, get ready, Fred,” she said as she heard Toshiro's cackling get louder.

    ~~~~~
    Elena watched as the water rushed down the rock formation. Her expression was indecipherable. There was a flash of red, and her Swampert appeared at her side.
    “Alright, Toshiro, time to get you out of there,” she yelled. There was a growl in response, so although I couldn't see where the Jolteon was I knew he had heard.
    “Toshiro's just about had it. That Milotic isn't done yet, though, and you're the only one that can take his place in there because of the electric current. Your Ground attributes should protect you from it. I'm going to call him back, and when he's passed the electrical barrier, I want you to go in, okay? But be ready when you do. She'll probably be chasing him with an attack, so prepare to throw up a Protect barrier as soon as you're in," Elena said to the large aquatic Pokemon.
    “Okay, Toshiro, you've done great. Let's let Fred take over from here, but give that snake one more good hit. Fire up a Volt Switch and combine it with Thunder Wave. We need to stop that Aqua Ring, and the only way I can think to do it is to thicken her scales so it's harder to absorb water. Her need to block the status should hopefully make her focus on that or be more vulnerable to paralysis. Then get back here!” the young girl called back into the battlefield.
    The crackling of electricity grew louder, and the amount of lightning strands making up the cage doubled. Toshiro howled, and a yellow bolt slammed into him from above. Yellow energy surrounded him, and he jumped down onto the ground. A low growl emanated from within the mass of electricity and he ran towards the Milotic, kicking up sand behind it as it moved. Toshiro headbutted the Milotic's serpentine body, and the electricity exploded outwards, wrapping itself around the Water-type's body. He then kicked off of the Milotic with his powerful rear legs, shooting towards the cage wall. He passed through it easily and padded over to Elena's side, panting heavily. Fred the Swampert roared and thudded into the arena, the electricity sparking uselessly over his body. He roared once more as a white shield covered him from head to tail.
    It was a good thing that he did, as the Milotic turned and shot a huge plume of water from its mouth at Elena's Pokemon. The gushing water steamed and sizzled as it arced through the air and washed over Fred's protective shield. The Milotic stopped the water attack just as Fred's Protect winked out, but it had another plan. The snake-like Pokemon's eyes started to glow bright yellow, and multicoloured lights played around its head. Fred tilted his own head, as if trying to make sense of the light show. He started to tilt and stagger from side to side, and I sighed. Looked like the finishing of this battle wasn't going to be as easy as Elena had hoped.
    Toshiro howled as his Volt Switch attack became fully charged. He leapt down to the ground and rushed off toward the sea snake, kicking up sand and flecks of mud still wet from the Surf. Then, he hit the Milotic hard, just as the electricity in his body surged. The crackling was so loud that Elena couldn't hear if the Water-type had made a sound or not. The Jolteon didn't waste any time after that, using the snake to spring board. He easily flipped directions and began to dart back toward her, toward safety.
    He shot through, being unaffected by the thunder cage, and he slowed down in a rush. He was still breathing heavily as he padded over to her, lying down by Elena's side. “Great job,” she told him, crouching down to rub his ears and the top of his head. The Electric-type sighed and relaxed a little bit. He didn't mind the attention now that he was out of the fray.
    She stood back up and looked at her other Pokemon. “Okay, Fred, you're up.”
    The big mud fish Pokemon nodded and stomped toward the electrical arena, shaking the ground near her. He wasn't as big as a lot of other Pokemon, but he was still pretty heavy. Milotic would probably have a hard time picking him up and throwing him around, so at least he might be safe from that. She was sure the snake had a bunch of other nasty techniques to use though.
    Fred surged through the fence, being unaffected by the shocks thanks to his affinity with the earth. He had his arm angled in front of him, sort of like how a medieval knight would hold a shield. On his command, a protective green-tinted barrier flared up to protect him, just as she had asked.
    She was glad she did too, since the Milotic chose that time to gather water in her mouth and spray it outward with a powerful lunge of her body. The water sizzled as it hit Fred's screen, and steam rose up from the conflict. If that hot water touched her Pokemon, there was a good chance that he could be burned. Scald was not something to mess around with. She had taught Fred that technique too, and they had endured a lot of healing during it.
    Thankfully, the Protect lasted until Milotic's spray of water was done. She wasn't done attacking, however, and Elena could only watch as Fred fell victim to her next attack. The snake's eyes started to glow yellow, and ghastly orbs of energy of the same color, mixed with soft blues and pinks, started to weave around her head. Elena paled. She knew what was coming next.
    Fred's gaze was hooked, and his head tilted along with the snake's. Then, he staggered and stumbled a bit, and Elena knew that he had been confused. There went her plan for finishing this battle fairly quickly.
    As she looked at the Milotic, she didn't seem to be that hurt from Toshiro's attack either, although she was moving a little slower. Maybe she had been paralyzed after all? Elena couldn't really tell yet. “Darn, she doesn't look any more tired than before, even after the Volt Switch...”
    “Jol...” Toshiro whined, a little dejectedly.
    “Oh, that's not your fault, Toshiro,” she said immediately, not wanting to make him feel bad. She hadn't meant to do that. “That snake probably just healed enough with that Aqua Ring to make up for what we did. It's okay, really,” she added, trying to stem his negativity. Sometimes she was still trying to win him over.
    She stooped back down to rub his head again, showing him that she wasn't upset or anything. She hoped her message got through.
    They did have a problem now though. Fred wasn't looking too good, and that Milotic wasn't tired enough to try and capture her yet. She had an itching feeling to get back to the mainland, even though she was sure nothing too major was happening. Someone would've called her if there was, like last time. Still, she was uneasy being away. If someone did need her, there wasn't a lot of time to mobilize.
    The sea snake wasn't making this battle any easier. She didn't know if Fred had many techniques that could actually hurt the snake enough to offset her healing. Plus, he was confused now. They had to deal with that first.
    Elena thought hard of what they could do to break him out of that confusion. If they weren't careful, he could accidentally attack himself instead of the target. She didn't want that. They needed a plan.
    “Fred, can you hear me?” she called, speaking evenly and somewhat softly. “I want you to focus on my voice.” She wasn't sure if this would work, but it was worth a shot. She had to get him calm so he could start thinking clearly.
    “Remember that vacation we took to Sunyshore? The waves crashed up along the beach that stretched on for miles, and the sun setting made everything glow orange. Can you still see that sand castle we made? And how we buried Seero up to his head? He was covered in sand. We were all well rested and relaxed then.” Elena tried to help him recall the memories of that time, hoping to evoke the same emotion that they had experienced while on the beaches.
    Once she thought he was about as relaxed as he was going to get, she spoke again in that same calm voice. “Fred, I want you to use Refresh. Purge all of those other thoughts from your head and focus on the good.”
    There wasn't anything saying that this would work, but it was all she had. She was hesitant to try and call some other move, because that could throw off the Swampert from her first suggestion, but she didn't want to be at the sea snake's mercy either. Every second they sat there doing nothing was time the Milotic had to plan against them.
    Eventually she wanted to put the snake to sleep if possible, but that was something to do right at the last stage, before she threw a ball. She thought she'd probably need a Hyper Ball for this creature, even though she was pretty sure a Super Ball would work too. She might need that extra strength to capture her. She had to make the shot count though, because the higher grade Balls were more expensive, and she didn't have a lot of extra funds to go around. If one of the large Pokemon stepped on it or something, it probably wouldn't function.
    She also wasn't sure if she was going to be able to throw the Ball over the electric fence. Sure, she could get it into the arena, but she wasn't going to be able to aim very well. She probably couldn't hit Milotic from where she was. The Balls were light, and there was a slight breeze. Knowing her luck, it would blow into the lake or the snake would shot it out of the sky with a jet of water.
    That meant she was going to have to give the Ball to Fred and let him try and throw it. That gathered a new set of problems, since he had an equally large chance of breaking the device if he wasn't snapped out of his confusion. Plus he was just a bigger Pokemon, and handling a small thing was always difficult. She really hoped Refresh worked.
    Still, none of that would really matter if they couldn't wear out the snake a little more. That Aqua Ring was a pain, and at any time while they were distracted, she could heal up most of her wounds and restore her energy. Then they'd have to do this all over again, and her partners didn't have the energy for that. She had to damage the snake more.
    Paralyzing the Milotic didn't seem to affect the Aqua Ring at all like she wanted, so she had to try something else. Hopefully Fred was okay by now. They were running out of time.
    “Fred, when you're ready, I want you to fire off a Muddy Water. We need to try and taint that Aqua Ring a little more. She needs to be worn down. The sand in front of you is still wet from the Surf. Mix that with the lake water and wash it over her.”
    Hopefully the mud from the sand would get into her scales and prevent the healing. Hopefully it would do a little damage too, but she wasn't holding her breath.
    She needed this to work.
    I felt a bit sorry for Elena. She had to deal with a confused Swampert and a dejected Jolteon, all while battling one of the strongest Pokemon the National Park could possibly throw at her. Just to make it worse, it appeared that her last attack had failed miserably. It was almost like there was some cruel overseer, mercilessly taunting her and just being a tard in general.
    Elena tried to calm her Swampert by having it take refuge in a calm memory, which was a neat trick. I made a mental note to tell Jathan of this technique - he often had problems breaking his Pokemon out of confusion and attraction.
    “Fred, I want you to use Refresh. Purge all of those other thoughts from your head and focus on the good,” Elena called, being sure to keep her voice steady. I could hear Swampert sigh, and a thin white shield began to run over him.
    Suddenly, there was an explosion of electricity from the Milotic's position. Yellow energy blasted outwards and the Milotic flopped onto its belly, smoking slightly. My jaw dropped in surprise.
    "The Marvel Scale must have delayed Cole's attack!" I yelled. "That explains why it appeared to do nothing. And here I thought someone somewhere was being a tool!"
    Fred opened his eyes and saw the Milotic in a momentary spot of weakness. Almost before Elena gave her commands, water swelled up from underneath the ground and rushed towards the Wild Pokemon. It carried along grit and sand from the beach, which promptly got stuck in the Milotic's eyes as the attack crashed into her. The Milotic flailed around, trying to swim against the tide so she wasn't pushed into the electric barrier. She just managed to dig her tail in and avoid being electrocuted. The Water-type was full-on panting now, and I saw her eyes start to go fully white.
    "You better move quickly, Elena, or the Milotic is going to Recover its strength!" I called.
    @ChainReaction01;
    OOC: You called him Cole again lol. If this works I'd like to end the run with Milotic, Slowbro, and Barboach. I didn't say in the post because it would mess the RP up a little.
    TP#29
    Fred sighed, and Elena watched as his body relaxed all over. Her fists were clenched as she watched a white light slowly start to glow around him. She really hoped that Refresh was working. She had a feeling she didn't have a lot of time left, and if they didn't act, that Milotic was going to do something they wouldn't like.
    As she watched the Swampert, an explosion of electricity made her jump. She whipped her head over to the Milotic as Toshiro's ears stood straight up. He straightened in his sitting position, with his head held very high so he could see what was going on.
    The sea snake was electrified, causing her to cry out and flop onto her stomach. Thin smoke trailed up in spirals from in between her scales. Elena wondered what the heck happened.
    “The Marvel Scale must have delayed Toshiro's attack!” she heard James yell.
    That explained why the snake hadn't looked that damaged before. Seeing the results of the attack, she turned to the Jolteon with a small smile on her face. “Nice job, Toshiro.”
    “Jol!” he said in an amazed pitch. He was pretty surprised too. It was a much better outcome than him being down about it. That Marvel Scale was going to be very handy.
    Then, Fred's eyes opened, and he looked a lot better than what he did. Had he broken out of the confusion?
    The Swampert saw his opportunity, and with a rush of energy, the water in the field bubbled and rose to the surface. In a graceful motion that gained momentum, the grainy water rushed toward the Milotic, taking all the silt and minerals with it.
    Mud stuck to the sea serpent's body as the water tried to sweep her away. Elena made a face as she saw the Milotic was sailing right for the electric fence they had put up. Thankfully, the snake managed to stop before she crashed into it by digging her tail into the ground. She was huffing as the water died out, and Elena knew she was close to the end of her strength. Her eyes then started to glow white, and Elena was put on alert.
    “You better move quickly, Elena, or the Milotic is going to Recover her strength!” James called out.
    The girl garbled a curse as she quickly dug into one of her vest pockets. She pulled out a Super Ball, but she wasn't sure how she was going to get it into the barrier yet. She needed Fred to do one more thing before she tried to catch the snake anyway.
    “Quick, Fred,” she called out. “We have to stop her recovering! Use your Yawn technique on the double!”
    The Swampert took a deep breath, and then he blew like he was chewing on bubble gum. A thin, pink bubble formed in front of him, bobbing lazily in the air. He took another breath and blew again, giving wind for the frail balloon to sail on. If it hit the Milotic in time, she would become drowsy, and she might even fall asleep. If they could time it right, they could send a Ball flying her way just as she dozed off. Sleep combined with the Paralysis and her low energy would help the device lock her in.
    That was, if the technique hit. Unfortunately, since it was so thin, it was easy to pop. It was light too, so any strong wind was going to blow it out of the way. She had to hope they would be quick enough.
    Once Fred had set his move, she called to him again. She ducked down and rolled the Super Ball to him from under the fence, tense as the mud fish reached down to stop it. It was a pretty small thing for his massive hands, and she worried about him breaking it. She couldn't get to the Milotic herself, though, so she'd have to leave this to him. Thankfully, he was generally relaxed, so he probably wasn't going to be overcome with pressure.
    “Be very careful with that,” she told him. “I need you to go over and use it on the Milotic. You can throw it or tap her with it, but try to wait until your Yawn hits before you do. If it misses, use the ball anyway, okay?” she asked him.
    Fred turned curved, happy eyes to her and nodded his head up and down. She smiled at him and gave him a thumbs up. “Go for it!” she called.
    Then, her phone rang. She really wanted to ignore it, but that nagging feeling at the back of her mind caused her to reach for her Pokegear. What if it was an emergency?
    “Hello?” she answered, keeping her eyes glued to the field.
    “Hi, Elena? This is Glenne.”
    The girls heart started to beat double as she heard the voice of her friend. “What's wrong?” she immediately asked. “Did something happen?”
    “Oh, no, not at all. Don't worry,” the other girl soothed. “Kyra just called me. She said she found something in Snowpoint and wondered if we could check it out with her. She didn't sound rushed or anything, so nothing's happened yet. If you can't make it, that's fine. How is your Park run going?”
    Elena sighed in relief, putting a hand to her forehead to brush her brown hair back. “It's going great. I think you'll be pleased with what I found,” she said, thinking of the Pokemon she had caught for Glenne. “I'm just finishing up, so I'll meet you up there, okay?”
    She could hear the other woman's smile in her words. “Can't wait to see. Don't rush for us. I'll see you then.”
    Elena hung up with a smile on her face, glad of how this day had gone. There hadn't been any emergencies yet, although the day was still young, and if this capture went right, she had more members of her team. Maybe one day she'd get Glenne to come here too. She was sure the other woman would enjoy it just as much as she did.
    ~~~~~

    It took Elena next to no time at all after hearing my warning to leap into action. “Quick, Fred! We have to stop her recovering. Use your Yawn technique on the double!”

    The Swampert inhaled deeply and then made a powerful blowing noise. A large pink bubble expanded out of the Swampert's mouth. A second deep breath sent the bubble wafting towards the Milotic. The Milotic saw the incoming bubble and started thrashing against the electrical bonds that were binding it.

    Elena didn't see any of this because she was busy rustling around inside her back. Finally, she pulled out a red-and-blue sphere and rolled it under the electrical cage. “Be very careful with that,” she instructed Fred, a stern tone in her voice. “I need you to go over and use it on the Milotic. You can throw it or tap her with it, but try to wait until your Yawn hits before you do. If it misses, use the ball anyway, okay?”

    The Wild Pokemon was still struggling against the electricity that was wrapping around her, but when Fred's Yawn bubble popped in her face she stopped struggling. With the last of her energy she looked at Elena and gave a weak nod just before her eyes closed and her head drooped onto the ground. The Swampert scooped up the Great Ball that was laying in the dirt and lumbered towards the Milotic. When the capture device touched the Milotic's skin, there was a bright white flash and the ball didn't even shake. The Milotic was so weak that it couldn't fight the capture mechanism at all.

    Right on cue, the Light Screens all faded, and the electricity blasted up into the sky, never to be seen again. As I walked over to pick the ball up, I could hear Elena talking to someone on the phone. I walked back just as Elena hung up.

    "Sounds like you need to head off," I said to her.

    "Yeah, I've got to meet some friends up at Snowpoint City," she replied.

    "Oh cool. I'll get Dual to teleport you back and you can take the Pokemon you want - I want to check out the Milotic's home," I explained. "If you get into any trouble up there, head to Veilstone and ask around for Jakk - tell him I sent you."

    I reached for Dual in my mind and explained to him that Elena needed to return to the Gate. He appeared in a blue flash, took the four PokeBalls, then disappeared with Elena, Toshiro and Fred in a second flash. I smiled up at the sun - it had been an interesting run, that was for sure. However, I had work to do - this strange hollow rock would be a perfect place to stash some booze where Ivy couldn't find it.
