    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

After something about a Daycare in the Sinnoh region, Monbrey enthusiastically confirmed that he wanted the Vulpix. Infernape looked like she was ready to go again, but the Trainer made the smart call and told her to go take a break. That was probably a good idea. The fox was only around two feet tall, and Infernape was double that. The height difference wasn't the problem really, but the monkey tended to be more hand to hand. Vulpix was a lot frailer than the Rapidash.

While Infernape went to go take a break, Monbrey released his Dragonite. The large tan dragon towered over his Trainer, but he had a friendly look on his face, which made him look slightly less intimidating. He sort of evoked the feeling to want to give him a hug hug.

It was a good call for trying to capture the smaller Pokémon. Dragonite could learn a ton of moves, and a lot of the supporting ones would be able to affect the Vulpix. It was a better type match up this time.

After reminding him not to be too menacing, Monbrey called out instruction. “Dragonite, hit it with Thunder Wave. Hopefully if it does get scared, that will prevent it from escaping.”

The dragon nodded at his Trainer and slowly moved towards the fox, trying to draw it out from the bushes. It's antennas crackled with electricity, preparing to strike as soon as it was able. It was a good idea to get her out of the bushes. The plant life might interfere with the bolts, grounding them before they hit their target.

The Vulpix was interested in what was going on. Though she seemed mostly quiet, she was still curious, and she edged out of the grass a little as she watched the Dragonite. Ivy didn't know if Dragonite was trying to distract her from seeing the electricity or not, but the Ranger saw when her eyes tilted up and locked onto the antenna.

The fire fox stilled but didn't run away, though it sort of looked like she wanted to. There were times when Pokémon knew they just had to fight though, so she had a feeling the fox would be brave and stick it out. In response to the dragon, Vulpix puffed out her fur and put on the cutest expression she could muster, fixing her eyes with the dragon's.

Dragonite was captivated for a second, and Ivy saw when he hesitated in his attack, like he didn't want to hit her as hard. He still let loose the energy though, and the paralyzing bolt cackled as it rapidly fired through the air, wrapping around Vulpix.

She tried to back up farther into the trees to avoid the attack, but the electricity had taken effect in her front legs, the part not protected by the long grass. She hunched down as the shock waves went through her, unable to move too much. It would be a little bit until it wore off, so she was going to have to fight from where she was.

Vulpix opened her eyes, and though she flinched sometimes, she didn't look any less alert than when she was before. Monbrey would have to be careful battling if she stayed on top of what was going on.

Vulpix began to step forward out of the bushes, eyes focused on the growin electrical power in Dragonite's antenna. Despite looking a little fearful, she looked Dragonite straight in the eye as it towered over her and put on an unbelievably adorable face.

From where I was, I could tell it was Captivate, and Dragonite fell for it. Ugh, he was almost TOO gentle at times, but I guess that wasn't a bad thing. He hesitated for a moment before firing the bolt of electricity down, connecting with the Vulpix's front legs. They instantly froze and buckled, Vulpix unable to move herself much at all as sparks continued to jump around her body. Surprisingly, she didn't seem particularly frightened, and continued watching Dragonite and the surroundings.

Despite Dragonite's efforts to distract her, Vulpix had seen the Thunder Wave coming all along. "She must have really keen senses..." I muttered to no-one in particular. This was going to make any attempts at sneaky attacks very difficult. Then again, I guess when it wasn't even able to move, I really didn't need to be sneaky.

"Alright Dragonite, now I know she's adorable, but DO try and focus alright? I want you to attack with Whirpool, it doesn't need to be a big one given Vulpix's size, just enough to trap it inside and do some damage. I'll leave it up to you how you want to control it."

Dragonite gave me a nod and an understanding smile. He shouldn't have any trouble holding back his power, and by letting him take the lead I knew if he felt like he wasn't attacking at full force he'd be a bit more willing to battle.

Dragonite stepped forward again, a spinning vortex of water beginning to appear at his feet, growing to be about four feet high. It was a beautiful technique really, to be able to see a whirlpool spinning from the outside, self-containing. Infernape watched from her seat on a log she had found... and set of fire. Great, Dragonite could deal with that later. Although Infernape wasn't really a fan of water techniques herself, seemed to appreciate the spectacle nonetheless, but made sure to stay a good distance away.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ivy saw Monbrey almost facepalm as Dragonite fell for Vulpix's Captivate attack. It would lower the dragon's power even farther. That in itself wasn't so bad though, as they didn't want to knock the wild Pokémon out anyway.

“Alright Dragonite, now I know she's adorable, but DO try and focus alright? I want you to attack with Whirlpool. It doesn't need to be a big one given Vulpix's size, just enough to trap it inside and do some damage. I'll leave it up to you how you want to control it.”

The big dragon just nodded an smiled. Ivy wasn't too worried about it hurting the smaller fox. It's temperament seemed gentle enough. Water formed at its feet as it focused back on the battle, the water whirling around and around as it formed a funnel and started to spin rapidly. It rose to about four feet before it evened out, and then the dragon launched it at the fire Pokémon.

The Vulpix could only watch as it neared her, still struggling with moving her front legs. The whirlpool engulfed her, and she let out a small cry as the water hid her from sight. There was only the sound of rushing water for a minute, and then the fox cried out loudly. The noise was followed by a whooshing, and then steam spewed from the whirlpool.

Small flickers of flame were visible from gaps in the water as the two elements clashed, and Ivy realized that the Vulpix must be using her Fire Spin to counter the attack. The force of the two were causing the energy to be turned to steam as the water was boiled away.

The Ranger saw Infernape look on with interest from the perch she found...which was on fire. Ivy decided to ignore that for now, as it was pretty contained. She did wonder if the fire monkey was taking note of how to counter the water though. She hadn't looked too fond of the wet.

The steamy white started to fade as Dragonite let the spinning water die out. The fire quit as well, and when the steam cleared, the Vulpix was finally visible. The Ranger took a step closer though as soon as she could see though, as the fox wasn't moving. She was curled up on the ground, bits of dirt and plants kicked up from the attacks surrounding her.

Dragonite looked on with interest. He made a small sound, maybe being concerned for the fox. She still hadn't moved. Ivy decided to wait to see what Monbrey would do before doing anything herself.

As Dragonite launched the twisting Whirlpool at Vulpix, she could do nothing but lie there and watch as it closed the distance between them. It quickly picked her up, the small fox disappearing inside the vortex.

Soon after though, jets of flame became to swirl in and around the water. Vulpix was using its own Fire Spin to counter the Whirlpool. The size of the swirling water started to decrease, as steam clouded above as it was evaporated away by the flames.

As the steam cleared, Vulpix could be seen lying amongst the rubble of dirt and plant pieces, still unmoving. I began to feel a little bad to paralyzing the cute little thing. Damnit, maybe the little bastard had captivated me too. Dragonite didn't seem to happy either. I realised that instead of Dragonite feeling better about paralyzing instead of attacking, he probably thought it wasn't even a fair fight. Oh well, I knew how to cheer us both up.

"Awww hell. I feel bad. Haha, Dragonite, use Heal Bell to cure it of paralysis. Who knows, it might even like you so much you won't have to fight it! But... probably not, considering we already paralyzed it and threw a Whirpool at it. This time, I want you to use Twister!"

We had already proven Fire wouldn't work, but the trapping effect that the tornado-like motion had provided seemed pretty useful. Vulpix had been forced to fight its way out instead of fighting Dragonite.

"Be careful Dragonite, though I trust you, I know you don't want to hurt it. You can apologise all you like when it's part of our team!"

Dragonite grinned, pleased to be able to help the poor Vulpix. He eagerly sprang forward into a serene gliding motion, wings outstretched, surprisingly graceful for his bulky figure. The dragon's mouth opened wide, as the melodic sounds of his Heal Bell song echoed across the field.

Infernape swayed to the melody, a dopey smile on her face, as she continued gazing at the sky.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

As Monbrey looked on, he looked slightly guilty. “Aww hell. I feel bad. Dragonite, use Heal Bell to cure it of paralysis. Who knows, it might even like you so much you won't have to fight it! But...probably not, considering we already paralyzed it and threw a Whirlpool at it. This time I want you to use Twister!”

Ivy chuckled to herself. This crafty little lady had her Trainer wrapped around her little paws before even joining his team. Now that she thought about it, she recalled that Vulpix sometimes played dead in order to escape a foe or catch them off guard. Really, this was probably all working out to her plan.

Sometimes, she thought that Pokémon knew what was going to become of them. Trainers were more common in the Park now, and she figured they were smart enough to figure out what was going on. She used to be iffy about the idea of coming here to capture free Pokémon, but she soon realized that traveling the world with Trainers like Monbrey was a type of freedom too.

She didn't doubt the Vulpix knew exactly what she was doing.

Dragonite grinned as it realized he would get to help out the fox. It really was gentle, and that made it a great Pokémon for the Park. He glided forward enthusiastically, opening his mouth wide as he got close to the fox. He began to sing the notes for Heal Bell, the lovely sounds carrying over to the downed fox.

In order for it to work, one had to be within a pretty decent range. In his eagerness, Dragonite got very close. It was then that the fox struck.

A dark ball of energy gathered almost hidden under Vulpix. She let it fly as soon as Dragonite was in range, the inky waves striking the dragon as his song was abruptly cut off and he was knocked backward a little. There was a somewhat satisfied look on the fox's face that her attack had struck, and Ivy thought it could be considered payback for being paralyzed.

The dragon was startled a little, probably somewhat confused as to why the fox was attacking him when he was trying to help. Still, he remembered his Trainer's instruction and moved onto the next part of his attack. The wind swirled at his feet much like the water had done before, picking up speed as it formed and rose higher. It gathered loose rocks, grass, and dirt as it whipped around, making a whistling sound through the air. Dragonite set it on a course towards the fox, seeing what would happen.

So far, attacking from a distance and trying to trap the fox had worked for them. Vulpix still couldn't move. She struggled for a moment, but her legs just wouldn't work. Since her attack had disrupted the Heal Bell, it hadn't had a chance to affect her. She turned her eyes back towards the incoming wind and tensed her body, glaring at it.

The heat rose around her, and she took a big breath as she let a streaming flamethrower blast toward the incoming attack. Ivy saw a similarity from the Rapidash's behavior. It seemed that fire Pokémon often tried to use the flames to power themselves up. If the Ranger wasn't mistaken, she thought that Vulpix might have the same ability as Rapidash had. She was trying to make the Twister benefit her more.

The wind kept coming, and with the added fire, it bled red, orange and yellow as it spun into a mini fire storm. The fire twister engulfed the fox, and there was a short cry before a massive flame came spinning out of the vortex, aiming right for the dragon. Dragonite lurched backwards, and Ivy was sure he avoided most of the blast.

When the flames died down, Vulpix's eye's shown with potential. The fire would make her hit harder from the boost, but she probably wouldn't be able to do many of them. She was breathing heavier, so the powerful attacks, along with fighting the paralysis, was starting to wear on her. The rocks and other debris from the twister had also left some scratches on her fiery fur. If he wore her out a little more, Monbrey would probably be able to catch her soon.

Dragonite continued to glide forward, getting very close to the Vulpix in order for its healing song to take effect. Vulpix stayed motionless, still paralyzed by the looks of things.

I was wrong - the Vulpix had just been waiting. Just as Dragonite got into range, jet black waves of powerful energy lauched out and collided with Dragonite, the beautiful sound of Heal Bell ending suddently as he was thrown backwards. I now knew where the phrase "sneaky like a fox" came from. Little bastards like this Vulpix.

Dragonite stood up. He hadn't taken much damage, the attack just seemed to have caught him by surprise. He was trying to help after all. I had predicted this anyway, and Dragonite continued by generating a swirling tornado of wind at his feet, propelling it directly at the Vulpix with a few powerful flaps of his wings.

Vulpix was still paralyzed. It was entirely its own fault this time, so I didn't feel bad anymore. It still had a cunning glint in its eye however, as the little fox fired a searing hot blast of flame at the tornado. It quickly sucked up the stream, the fire beginning to swirl with the twister in much the same way as Infernape's Fire Spin technique. Vulpix was smart - it was trying to take advantage of Dragonite's attack.

The flaming twister covered the small Vulpix, picking her up within. After a short silence, Vulpix cried and shot a huge blast of flame out of the tornado, arching above my head towards Dragonite. He wasn't about to be caught by surprise again though, and managed to jump back without most of the blast hitting him.

The twister died down, Vulpix still struggling to move, but now able to stand. Her eyes shone with a deep red glow - the same effect Flash Fire had on Rapidash. Fire still wasn't going to be hugely effective on Dragonite, and I still had one final trick up my sleeve.

"Dragonite, lets use Fly! I'm coming with you for this one!" Dragonite nodded, swooping over to crouch in front of me as a climbed onto its back. "Let's go! Take flight, and hit that Vulpix with Dragon Pulse from the air!" Dragonite nodded, leaping from the ground with incredible power as I struggled not to be knocked off. After achieving enough height to hopefully be out of range of Vulpix's fire attacks, a swirling ball of blue and purple energy grew in Dragonite's mouth, black sparks jumping all around it.

I pulled one of the blue and red Super Balls out of my backpack. I wasn't entirely sure, but I thought I had a pretty good chance of capturing Vulpix after this attack, if it all went according to plan, particularly given that Vulpix was already paralyzed. I just needed good aim. The ball grew to fill my palm as I clicked the button on it, chucking it into the air above Vulpix as Dragonite launched one of its strongest attacks straight downwards towards the red fox.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Vulpix's eyes glowed with power as Monbrey watched it, and he now looked less guilty and more annoyed. Personally, Ivy was just amused. She was definitely crafty. The fox looked happy to her, and that was what was important. Besides, didn't they say it was always the quiet ones?

“Dragonite, let's use fly! I'm coming with you for this one!” he called. The dragon nodded and stooped down so his Trainer could climb onto his back. They flew high into the air as Monbrey thought of another idea, telling his Dragonite to use Dragon Pulse on the fox.

From that height, they might be out of range of Vulpix's fire. She had favored long-distance attacks though, so they would have to see. She might be used to fighting like this.

Dragonite gathered energy to him, opening his mouth as a ball of swirling power formed. It shone blue and purple and black, with sparks flickering now and then. The Vulpix saw, watching the dragon and Trainer pair above her. With her glowing eyes, she gathered more heat to her in response to the attack.

A ring of fire formed in front of her before fading into a five point star, flashing as she launched it upwards with incredible speed. Dragonite chose this time to release his own attack and he shook as he released the shock wave, the pulsing energy clashing with the fire.

The Fire Blast dissolved into the dragon's flame as it passed through it. Only the very corners passed though, but Dragonite backed up as he fired, protecting his Trainer from getting singed and causing his attack to absorb the rest of it.

While this was happening, Monbrey took the time to pull out a Superball from his pack. Ivy saw him expand it and time his throw right, following his Dragonite's attack. It fell straight down, and the Ranger wasn't sure if the Vulpix would be able to see or dodge it, since it was distracted by the Dragon Pulse.

The beam came down on the small fox, the energy shocking through her as she couldn't get out of the way. The blast ended, and she let out a cry before collapsing to the ground again. Though hurt, Ivy could see the fox was smiling, and if she strained her ears, there was a soft cooing. Vulpix simply closed her eyes as the ball collided with her back, the red light sucking her inside of it.

The ball took her place on the ground with a soft thud, and it barely shook at all. The resounding ping echoed in the now quiet field, and Ivy waved up to Monbrey with a smile.

“Looks like you got another one in the bag no problem!”

She waited for him to come down and choose where they were going next.

The Vulpix watched Dragonite as he gathered power, the heat levels rising around her and she did the same. A ring of Fire formed into a five pointed star in front of her - Fire Blast, a technique I was very familiar with. The little fox fired the huge blast upwards towards us. Dragonite responded, an intense beam of energy shooting from his mouth and clashing with the flame.

The dragon's attack abosrbed the Fire Blast as it passed through it, contacting directly with Vulpix below. She cried out and collapsed as I threw the ball and watched it fall towards the little red fox. I couldn't tell from here, but she didn't seem to be even trying to run away.

The ball sucked her inside, the signiature ping sounding out almost instantly. “Looks like you got another one in the bag no problem!” Ivy called out to me, and Dragonite and I both grinned. Two for two, this was going pretty well. I only hoped I'd find a Torkoal as well before I was finished.

"Great work Dragonite. Let's come in to Roost right by the Ranger while I see where we're going next." Dragonite dived quickly, pulling up into a graceful landing right before the ground, and I hopped off.

"Well, I guess we should continue up the mountain? Vulpix and Rapidash were the two main things I was looking for, but I think there's Torkoal out her too, right? I'd love to be able to catch one of those before heading home."

I picked up my backpack and switched the Pokeplayer off. I wasn't going to need it again after my two captures so far. "Alright Infernape, Dragonite, come on!"

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Monbrey and his Dragonite came down to Roost next to the Ranger while Monbrey decided where they were going next. “Well, I guess we should continue up the mountain? Vulpix and Rapidash were two main things I was looking for, but I think there's Torkoal out here too right? I'd love to be able to catch one of those before heading home.”

She nodded at his question, marveling that his list was so specific. He must own a lot of fire Pokémon. “Yeah, there's been a few sighted once in a while. Buzzer, a coworker of mine, ran into one and almost fell while doing some rock climbing. It wasn't violent really, but it surprised him. While it would've been kinda fun to give him crap about it, listening to him complain from any injuries would've been less entertaining.”

She waited for the Trainer to switch off his Poképlayer and put it away before going on. Her phone beeped, and she looked down, forgetting she even had it with her. She opened the messages and started to laugh.

“Geez, what's got her panties in a twist?” At Monbrey's questioning look, she read out loud. “It's from Sherry at the main office. She says: There's been increased volcano activity lately, so you and your Trainer should be careful, though I'm sure you'll be just fine.” Ivy just shook her head with a smile. “Did you do something to piss her off? I don't remember anything I did.”

In the end she just shrugged as they continued up the path. Haxbat soared ahead of them, and she just enjoyed the scenery while figuring the bat would alert her to anything approaching. He didn't fail her as he let out a soft cry. A form appeared on top of a rock next to the path, and it chattered at them before jumping down into the center of the path.

“Well, what do you know, it's a Chimchar.” The miniature monkey resembled the Infernape at Monbrey's side, only instead of a flaming head, it had a flaming tail. “You were pretty specific on what you're looking for, but since it's here, I'm required to ask if you'd like to capture it or let it be.”

Just as we were about to set off, Ranger Ivy's phone beeped. She stopped to check the message and started laughing.

“Geez, what's got her panties in a twist?” I gave her a confused look, not knowing who she meant. “It's from Sherry at the main office. She says: There's been increased volcano activity lately, so you and your Trainer should be careful, though I'm sure you'll be just fine. Did you do something to piss her off? I don't remember anything I did.”

I thought for a moment. "Would Sherry be that much too helpful, not too clothed secretary? I maaaaay have annoyed her a little, yes... Not like your forms are difficult. Panties in a twist... she probably isn't even wearing any." I muttered the last part, unsure if the Ranger had heard me.

The Ranger shrugged and started to lead the way up the mountain again, her Crobat flying overhead, probably scouting for trouble. No sooner that I thought this, it made a soft cry, as a Chimchar jumped down from a rock up ahead. The similarities between my Infernape were striking, but not surprising given they were from the same family.

“You were pretty specific on what you're looking for, but since it's here, I'm required to ask if you'd like to capture it or let it be.” Park rules said I could capture as many Pokemon as I liked, but I could only take three of them out with me, and the rest would be released.

"Well, I've already got Infernape obviously, she's been with my team for ages. I've actually got a Chimchar too, that another fire trainer and good friend of mine gave me, so I think I'll just let this one go."

I realised as I spoke that the Chimchar had jumped down onto the path to block the way. If we weren't able to sneak around it, I might need a distraction.

"Hey, Ranger Ivy? If we can't get past that Chimchar, would you mind keeping a Pokedoll on standby? They're $500 right?" I pulled the amount out of my pocket. Refereeing Pokemon matches was a high paying job; it was nice to always have cash if I needed it. Infernape didn't even seem interested in battling the Chimchar anyway, probably because they were family. I kept walking up the path, hoping it didn't want to fight either.

(OOC: You can make an occ comment like this to subtract the money from your stats. I say a tab for the sake of the role play.)

    NBP#6

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The two tried to get around the Chimchar, but every time they tried to go off the path to go around it, the mini monkey just followed and went the same way. It looked like they were going to have to use a doll to escape. Sometimes it was annoying, but the fluffy, pink Pokédolls did speed the trip up a lot since it was impractical for a Trainer to battle and scare away every Pokémon they didn't necessarily want to catch.

Monbrey went to pull out the amount the Park charged for the doll, but she waved him down. “Just in case things get hectic, I like to keep a tab running until the Trainer leaves the Park. I'll just add on anything you use for you to settle at the main office afterward. There will be some paper for you anyway.”

Ivy recalled reading that Monbrey was a referee for Pokémon battles. She knew they were paid a lot of money for how much work they had to do. In fact, it was one of the highest paying jobs on the market right now. It must be good if he was able to spend money like that no problem. So many trainers before him had to fight off wild Pokémon they couldn't run from.

The Ranger stepped forward to place the doll, watching as the monkey took interest in it. They were able to get around the creature as it tried to pick up the doll and dance around with it. Ivy just smiled and led them on.

“So, what was it you did again?” she asked, trying to spark some sort of conversation. Sure she had read the file, but it was a little rude to assume. She was about to add another comment when her phone beeped again impatiently. “Oh for crying out loud, what now.”

She stopped to check the device again, sighing as she read the next message. “Stop sending me messages, woman. Another warning from Sherry. Seriously, you aren't being helpful, stop sending,” she added, speaking to the phone.

She shook her head, looking at her Trainer. “Sorry about that. She's got this thing for Leo, so she's always trying to one up Madison, one of the other secretaries, by being useful around the office. As you found out, it's more annoying than good. And you're right about what you said earlier. She probably isn't wearing any.” Sherry had been getting on a lot of people's nerves lately.

They continued up the path, having to follow it around a bend that was hidden by the south side of the mountain. Then, the sound of crushing rocks reached their ears. They came around the turn in time to see a Combusken training by itself, working on crushing the rocks around it with its powerful kicks. The three foot gold and red fighting chicken stopped as they neared, turning to look at them.

“Well, here's another one, though I'm fairly confident you already have it. Still, it's in the job description to ask. In need of a Combusken?”

    OOC: Current Tab - $500

As I pulled out the cash for the Pokedoll, the Ranger motioned for me to put it away. “Just in case things get hectic, I like to keep a tab running until the Trainer leaves the Park. I'll just add on anything you use for you to settle at the main office afterward. There will be some paper for you anyway.”

That was probably a good idea. "Yeah, makes sense. I get the feeling I'll be needing these Pokedolls a lot, since I have most of the Fire Pokemon already. No point catching them again, particularly since a lot of these can be bought. I'm really only here for the rarer ones."

We continued walking up the mountain. I was really only looking for one more Pokemon, but we couldn't race straight there. Besides, you never knew what we'd find on the way.

“So, what was it you did again?” The Ranger tried to start conversation, but the beeping of her phone abrutly cut it short. “Oh for crying out loud, what now.” I figured it was probably that secretary again. “Stop sending me messages, woman. Another warning from Sherry. Seriously, you aren't being helpful, stop sending”

I laughed. "Kinda just a pet peeve of mine really. Helping where help isn't needed usually just ends up getting in my way, hence I got kinda snappy with her. But we move on. Well... I do."

The Ranger shook her head, clearly frustrated. “Sorry about that. She's got this thing for Leo, so she's always trying to one up Madison, one of the other secretaries, by being useful around the office. As you found out, it's more annoying than good. And you're right about what you said earlier. She probably isn't wearing any.”

I laughed again. Sounded like a fun place to work. "Let me guess... every male Ranger usually needs something from either the top shelf or the bottom drawer? Since you asked, I'm a Pokemon match referee. No secretaries in my business."

We turned round a bend in the road, the sound of rocks breaking reaching our ears, probably blocked by the mountain previously. A Combusken was rigourously training itself, smashing large rocks with its powerful kicks. It stopped and turned to look at us as we walked up the path.

“Well, here's another one, though I'm fairly confident you already have it. Still, it's in the job description to ask. In need of a Combusken?”

"Nah, same deal as before, I've already got a Blaziken. Hopefully this will be a little easier to get around, since he seems busy anyway. Otherwise.. I guess it's kinda just a rinse-and-repeat thing, if we can't get past, I'll be needing another Pokedoll."

The Combusken continued watching us as we casually waled up along the other side of the path. I was hoping if we made no attempt to engage it, it would just carry on with what it was doing.

    NBP#7

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Combusken watched them as they tried to continue on the path. Ivy tried not to look at it, lest eye contact sparked something in it. They were doing okay for about twenty feet, then she head Haxbat's warning hiss. She tensed as a shadow came sailing over them, landing in front with a puff of dirt. It seemed the Pokémon was not going to let them by.

She sighed. She didn't know what was up with Pokémon on the mountain today. As instructed, she pulled out another Pokédoll, watching as the chicken's eyes honed in on it. She gave it a toss, and the Pokémon instinctively caught it. It became happier upon contact. She didn't know what it was about the dolls that Pokémon liked, but if it sped up the run and caused them to have less unwanted encounters, it was fine by her.

The Pokémon wandered off and they continued. The Ranger wished that something Monbrey was interested in would pop up. Though he had two successful captures, a Trainer was allowed to take three Pokémon out of the park, and she'd like him to be satisfied with the trip here.

They came around the south side of the mountain, and the view opened up into the ocean. The sun was still high in the sky, making the blue water sparkle and shine. Ivy stopped to appreciate the view, and then a massive roar sounded, shaking some of the smaller rocks loose above them as dirt floated down.

There, a little further on the path, stood a massive Typhlosion. Apparently it had been stretching, as its cream colored arms were sticking out. It's neck flames were flared, and it stood out against the ocean scene.

Ivy spoke quietly, in case the Fire Pokémon took offense at being disturbed. “You want to bother that Typhlosion? I have no idea if you're a picture taker at all, but its a pretty great scene.”

The Ranger's Crobat hissed as we walked along the far side of the path. Apparently the Combusken wasn't planning on leaving us be.

Ivy pulled out another Pokeball, the Pokemon instantly fixated upon it. A quick throw and catch, and Combuskn was happily walking off with its new toy. It was almost childlike behaviour, but adorable.

"These dolls are a real timesaver huh?" I mused.

As we rounded another turn on the path, onto what I was told was the south side of the mountain, the ocean came into view. The view was amazing, the sunlight reflecting and sparkling on the crystal blue water below. I pulled out my camera, eagerly running to the edge to snap a quick photo. Infernape followed, staying a good distance back from the edge though. Dragonite beamed a massive grin, taking flight out over the ocean, singing cheerfully. He loved the ocean, especially one as beautiful as this.

The serene atmosphere was abruptly broken by a loud roar. Looking ahead, a massive Typhlosion was stretching out in the sun by the edge of the cliff, its flames blazing brightly. I was pretty sure it hadn't seen us yet.

Ivy quietly motioned to me. “You want to bother that Typhlosion? I have no idea if you're a picture taker at all, but its a pretty great scene.”

I nodded silently. "Yeah, that's amazing. I've got a Typhlosion of my own too, but to see one out here, it's just so natural." I fiddled with the camera's settings in a hurry, configuring it to take quiet a few shots as quickly as possible. The flash would probably startle it, so I wanted as many chances to get one good shot as possible. In my rush, I hit a couple of wrong buttons.

"OHH! OHH! RIGHT THERE! YES!" *CLICK*

I shut it off damn fast, then looked up at Ivy. "Uhhh... takes video too... lot of storage... forgot about that."

Ignoring the awkward atmosphere, I stepped quietly forward, leaning on a rock to steady the camera as I triggered the photos. The flash was blinding; my eyes shut involuntarily as I waited for the blotchyness to fade to check my results.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Monbrey nodded, agreeing that the scene was pretty neat. Unfortunately, he mentioned that he already had a Typhlosion. He did have a camera though, and Ivy watched as he pulled it out and fumbled with the device. The flash from it would probably scare away the Fire type, so he had to make the shot count.

He pressed a few buttons while moving it, and then a breathy female voice was shouting. Monbrey rapidly cut it off and turned toward her with an awkward look. “Uhh...takes video too...lot of storage...forgot about that.”

Ivy burst out laughing, covering her mouth as she chuckled so she didn't startle the wild Pokémon. What she wouldn't give for an audio copy of those few lines for revenge on Buzzer, Chainy, and Leo... She could just imagine the fun she could have.

Monbrey ignored the awkwardness as he stepped forward to get a good shot. He leaned on a rock to steady his arms and hit the correct button this time. The flash caused the Typhlosion to flinch and look at them. It snorted and then turned to leave, deciding the people were not worth its time.

Ivy walked over to the Trainer as the picture was clearing. “Hey, nice shot,” she said from behind his shoulder. “We have a couple of collectors back at the office that'll probably pay you pretty well for it.”

The Ranger looked back out over the ocean and the sparkling water. While it was a nice trip, after a few lucky first encounters, they weren't finding much that Monbrey was interested in. It was hard when Trainer's had such a specific list, and since Pokémon seemed to be somewhat agitated, they weren't able to get around them. She felt a little guilty burning through his money for dolls, even if he claimed to make a lot.

“Just so you know, you can leave the Park at any time you want to. I'm not sure if they told you that before. You can still claim up to three Pokémon you've caught too. Sometimes people have to leave because of an emergency or something. Anyway, its your call what we do next.”

She liked to keep a Trainer's options open, and he had been a good sport so far. Some days the Park was hit or miss though, so there wasn't much she could do about it.

The flash from the camera startled the Typhlosion, rearing up to glare at us. With a snort, he turned away. He probably just wanted to relax more, not start a fight. That was a relief.

Ivy checked the photo from behind me. “Hey, nice shot, we have a couple of collectors back at the office that'll probably pay you pretty well for it.”

"Oh sweet, that's a nice bonus. I just wanted to keep a copy for myself." The ranger and I stod staring out at the water for a few moments before she spoke again.

“Just so you know, you can leave the Park at any time you want to. I'm not sure if they told you that before. You can still claim up to three Pokémon you've caught too. Sometimes people have to leave because of an emergency or something. Anyway, its your call what we do next.”

I thought about my options. Two out of three wasn't bad, and I have a vague feeling I'd heard somewhere that running into a Torkoal this time of year was particularly rare. The magnificent photo felt like a good way to end the day.

"You know what, I think I might call it quits anyway. Vulpix and Rapidash will be great additions to my team. You've been great, thanks for everything!"

Monbrey thought about the situation, but in the end he decided against continuing on. “You know what, I think I might call it quits anyway. Vulpix and Rapidash will be great additions to my team. You've been great, thanks for everything!”

Ivy smiled at him, returning the thanks. The run had been fun while it lasted, and at least he had managed to snag two of the Pokémon he really wanted. She wished him luck finding that last elusive Fire type and started to lead him back to the Main Outpost. He was a referee, so he probably had many contacts in the Trainer circuit. Maybe someone would be willing to trade with him.

Back at the office she sorted out configuring his ID number to the Parkballs and made sure he could exchange his great picture for some cash. She waved as he left, and she returned to her office to fill out the rest of her own paperwork to file into the system. He had looked pretty pleased, so she could call it a job well done.

The secretaries continued to be flirted with, and Rangers still tried to avoid their paperwork, but at the end of the day, she loved her job.
