The dust was thick today. Usually the dust only went down to about half off the mountain, but today it went all the way down to the gate. The mountain was known to have a lot of soot right before and after and eruption. I was hoping that my next run would be somewhere nice like the gardens. I would go for a nice stroll and not a hike up a mountain. It would also be nice to take a jeep there instead of walking, but the mountain was too rocky and the path either too short or too uneven for any kind of wheels. Well, maybe a bike could make it but it would take a lot of effort and carefulness to make it up that hill.

I coughed out some soot and held a bandana up to my mouth hoping the soot would not come through. I looked though my bag and found another bandana in order to offer one to my trainer. I leaned back against the rock and waited.

Gaius smiled as he looked down at the reminder message on his phone. "Pokemon Park" was flashing brightly on the screen, and the Pokemon trainer silenced his phone with the movement of his hand. He had been to the park twice before, and had added numerous Pokemon to his growing collection. 'I hope I find some rare and unique Pokemon this time around. After all, that's the only reason to bother going there at all, Although Gaius' previous rangers had been lacking in power or overall intelligence, the young man hoped that whomever he met this time would actually be worth his time. 'I can't stand those types of weakling trainers,' Gaius thought to himself, 'compassion for weak Pokemon is pointless. The only thing that matters is strength and how well Pokemon do in battle.' The trainer smiled to himself and looked at his phone to determine the best route from his current location to the National Park. 'Hm..if I go directly South from where I'm at, I could reach the National Park in an hour or two.

Overall the Pokemon selection ought to be better this time around. considering I'm going to Mt. Deckbi. I need some strong Ground-type and Fire-type Pokemon. Apparently there's even some Dragon-type Pokemon located in that section of the Park as well. I'd love to add a Garchomp, Flygon, or Tyrantrum to my collection. Although, to be honest, anything new would be welcome as long as it's worth my time.' The trainer looked over his current Pokemon roster and mulled over whom he had chosen for the Park expedition. 'Gengar coming along was guaranteed, as he's been my main Pokemon since the beginning. Tyranitar was also a smart choice since the majority of Pokemon in the area are weak to Rock-type or Ground-type attacks. Plus, there aren't any Fighting-Pokemon there for me to worry about, so he should perform extremely well.' Gaius reached onto his belt and pulled off a black-colored Pokeball.

"Time to go, Dragonite!. Take me to the National Park," the young man yelled. As he threw the ball high into the air, a large bi-pedal yellow=orange dragon emerged from a flash of white and stood next to its trainer. "We don't have much time to waste, so it's probably best to get going now. I don't want to look foolish if I'm late for my own appointment that I made months ago." Gaius climbed up onto the large Dragon-type Pokemon's back and wrapped his arms around the Pokemon's neck. "Remember to fly low whenever possible to avoid storms or other possible weather hazards."

"Dragoo," the Pokemon yelled, understanding its trainers commands. The large Pokemon slowly lifted off from the ground by flapping its wings. Within moments, the pair were soaring in the air on their way towards the National Park. Gaius could see Cinnabar Island underneath him, and then saw the Orange Islands. "I promise to bring you into the park next time, Dragonite. Gengar and Tyranitar were much better choices this time. If I go into a more Dragon-based area you're sure to be useful." The trainer laughed as he pictured Dragonite rampaging through the park, taking on Kingdra, Haxorus, and other Dragon-type Pokemon.

Within a few hours Gaius could see the National Park below him. He quickly ordered Dragonite's descent and slowly made his way to the entrance. He walked towards the information desk and looked at the receptionist, a young woman aproximately twenty years old. The woman was dressed in an official-looking uniform with an emblem of the Park on the left breast-pocket of her shirt. The young man assessed her appearance and spoke slowly. "Hello, my name is Gaius Vi Britannia, and I have an appointment soon for Mt. Deckbi. I've also ordered a new supply of park items for run today, have they been set aside for today as I requested?"

The receptionist smiled and looked at the young trainer. "Give me a minute and I'll look for you." She scanned a padd of some kind using her left-hand to move the images on the screen while her right hand twirled long, curly red hair. After a moment she looked back towards the trainer. "Gaius Vi Britannia, three Park Balls, one Super Ball, correct? I have them in the back. I'll go get them for you right now." The woman turned around and went into a back-room. After five minutes she returned, holding a bag that held Gaius' bought items. "Thank you for waiting." she replied cheerfully, "here are your items. I hope you enjoy your time in the Park."

Gaius feigned a smile and nodded. "Yes, I'll be sure to." He turned and walked away from the reception deck and readied to enter the park. 'Gengar and Tyranitar both in my pocket, the other Pokemon sent to Professor Oak's ranch..ok, I think I'm good to go." He found the marked entrance for Mt. Deckbi and entered. After a few minutes near the entrance, he noticed a large concentration of soot in the air around him. 'Wow, I hope this lets up soon. I'm not particularly against volcanic areas but it can get hard to breathe in situations like this'. After a few more minutes of walking, he spotted a trainer with their back against the tree.

I slumped against the rock that I leaning against. I think I may have dozed off at some point. It wasn’t until I heard footsteps approaching that I shot up and said, “I didn’t eat the last cookie!”

I turned to see that my trainer had arrived, “Oh Hello,” I said ”I’m Robin and I ill be your ranger today!” I offered out my hand for him to shake. I then turned and walked over to the gate and swiped my key card then I pressed A few buttons on the control pad and the gate swung open allowing us to go through.

“Be sure to stay behind me,” I said “Some of the rocks are unstable here and it could be risky and lets not get into the caves with falling rocks or the boiling lava pots or the cliffs or any of the not fun dangers that this mountain has to offer” As I was talking I opened my map and tried to decipher the safest path that past the most land marks and Pokemon hide outs. While I was looking at the map I also wasn’t looking where I was going so I tripped with the upmost grace. And landed on my face.

“I’m okay!” Yelled as I got back up I ran my hand over my face checking for anything wet. “No Blood! See I’m fine!” I looked around now wary of the rocks that were scatted about and the soot was not helping at all. We had reached one of the land marks “The Five fingers” I said to Gaius as I pointed to the rocks that were protruding from the ground “No one knows how they were formed but the rocks have this bean to them that kinda make them look like fingers you know? “ Nesting on top of one of the rocks was a small bird it had an orange head with a white body and wings. The little guy also had black legs, eyes and beak. It was sleeping softy making small cooing noises. It was adorable.

“That’s a Fletchling,” I said, “You wanna catch it, or just try to avoid it?”

As Gaius approached the young woman, he noticed that she seemed to be asleep. 'First I have the happy-go-lucky sappy rangers, and now I have one who falls asleep on the job,' he mused. For a moment, the young man planned to use his Tyranitar to wake up the ranger, however she awoke before he could put his plan into motion.

As she introduced herself, he feigned a smile and replied "the name's Gaius, Gaius Vi Britannia. I do hope you stay awake during my expedition. I wouldn't want a rock slide or something to occur if someone's not on their a-game today. Perhaps if you need to retire to bed I could contact your supervisors and have them send someone else out instead, possibly someone who had a full-night's rest." The trainer coldly shook her outstretched hand and followed after his guide as she led him onward.

Gaius listened nonchalantly as Robin prattled on about the dangers of the Mt Deckbi and began to think to himself. 'Hopefully she knows I've been in the park before. One would expect that they keep records of that sort of thing. I swear, if she tries to teach me how to catch a Pokemon I won't be held liable if she falls into a lava pool.' He laughed quietly to himself at that thought, and then looked up at the girl.

He noticed that she had fallen forward onto the ground and was quickly checking for blood or other signs of serious injury. "Ya know," Gaius mused while laughly openly at Robin's pratfall, "one would expect such an occurance out of a new ranger or guest, but surely you have extensive training under your belt, correct? Or is this your first day on the job?" He then listened as she began to describe a certain outcropping of rocks that the pair had come across. "Yes, I'm sure all of that's interesting if I was on a nature tour, but honestly I'm just here for one thing, and geology lessons aren't it." As he finished speaking, he saw the young woman point out a small bird Pokemon that was on top of one of the rocks.

"Hmm, that's a Fletchling, right?" Gaius asked aloud. "Although he doesn't look like much now, he can evolve into a powerful Talonflame and can get a special Ability that lets him move first in battle. That's exactly the kind of Pokemon that I need on my team. But, first, let me check and see what other information I can find out about him." He reached into his back and pulled out a black Pokedex and pointed it in the Pokemon's direction. Within a few seconds, a mechanical voice emerged from the device.

"Fletchling, the Tiny Robin Pokemon. These friendly Pokémon send signals to one another with beautiful chirps and tail-feather movements. Despite the beauty of its lilting voice, it's merciless to intruders that enter its territory. Fletchling's most powerful moves are.." Gaius then closed the device with a sign. "I already knew what moves it can learn. I was kind of hoping for some better information, oy veh." He then reached down onto his belt and pulled off a Pokeball. "Since Fletchling is a Fire and Flying-type Pokemon, I have the perfect counter!" He threw the Pokeball towards the tiny bird and a large rumble was heard as the Pokemon emerged. "Go, Tyranitar! Use Rock Slide to injure that Fletchling enough for me to be able to capture it. Be sure to limit any surrounding damage to the area, and to be ready to protect me in case an avalanche occurs." The trainer looked on as the Pokemon began to execute his command.

Tyranitar stretched its arm happy to be free of the confines of its ball. It heard its trainer’s commands and ran over to the fingers. Dug into the rock that it was standing on and pulled up a lot of smaller rocks. The Pokemon then tossed the rocks over towards the Fletching. The rocks rained down on Fletching who at the time was singing, likely some kind of mating song. It likely had a cute little dance that went along with it. The rocks also crashed into the fingers causing scratches and a large pile of rock that had formed at the bottom of the rocks.

The little bird was no longer happy, it was in fact very, very angry. It flew off of the rocks and over to the large rock and dark type. It flew right at the rock type but flew up right before hitting the dark type. It then did a barrel roll in the air and it can back in and nailed the Tyranitar right in the back of the head. It had used Acrobatics a move hat did more damage if the attacker didn’t hold an item. In this case the Pokemon wasn’t holding an item so double damage for them. The bird did another flip and was now flying in a circle around the dark and rock type.

OOC: Male, also I had tbolt listed under Gengar in Front gate, but you have "none" for extra moves.

    IC:

Gaius watched as his Pokemon ran towards the Flying-type Pokemon. A smile crept across his face as his large Pokemon threw rocks towards the Tiny Pigeon Pokemon. 'Good,' the trainer thought, 'that should do a lot of damage. I just need to keep up with these attacks and that Pokemon will be mine in no time.' He then watched and studied the wild Pokemon's reaction.

The trainer couldn't help but laugh at the small bird's angry attitude. 'This one sure is a fighter,' he mused, 'he will be a perfect addition to my team.' As the Fletchling performed its aerial acrobatics, Gaius watched on studying its movements. 'It seems quite skilled at flying as well. I'm sure if with intense training I could make it a superb flier and able to hit any opponent quickly no matter the distance between them.' The wild Pokemon's attack did not even seem to faze the large Dark-type Pokemon, so Gaius wasn't worried about continuing the battle.

"Tyranitar, follow up with a brutal Stone Edge! Show the wild Pokemon the strength of one of your most powerful moves!" Gaius knew that Stone Edge was a logical follow up to Rock Slide. Althoguh the move had a possibility of missing, he weighed the odds in his favor and knew that the potential power output outweighed the chance of failure. 'I just wish there was more than 80% chance of Stone Edge hitting its target.' The trainer sighed as he mused to himself and watched his Pokemon begin to follow out his commands.

As his Pokemon began to move, Gaius felt an unexpected wave of uncertainty wash over him and his mind flashed back towards his first-ever expedition in the National Park with his Gengar and Crobat. 'Don't worry,' the young man thought to himself. 'You were able to do well that time just like you'll be able to do well here. You just have to keep analyzing every possible move and situation your opponent can make and then devise the perfect counter-strategy. It shouldn't be too hard, you've trained your mind for this for a while now. Just let it come naturally, and you'll do fine. You were able to capture Mankey, Zigzagoone, and Lickitung before without any major problem, and that was so long ago. You're a much better trainer now.' The young man paused for a moment and mulled over his thoughts. 'Yeah,' he continued to think as a small smile crept across his face. 'I have grown a lot as a trainer, and I've learned a lot more about battling as well. I just have to keep myself focused on the goal of catching as many powerful Pokemon as possible and I won't fail!'

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Storm clouds followed Ivy Frost into the main outpost.

The doors were pushed open with a violent shove, and the red-headed woman’s boots echoed heavily against the tile. Rangers and secretaries cowered.

Ivy couldn’t help the glare and scowl that graced her face, her red canvas vest billowing behind her with every step. Nothing had gone right today.

First, one of the support beams in the Ruined Manor collapsed, injuring two other Rangers who had to be sent back to the main land for treatment, since Sam, their on-site doctor, didn’t have the equipment to handle their wounds. Losing two Rangers made them hard-pressed for availability, meaning the rest of them would have to pick up the slack.

Then, a small fire had broken out in the Garden’s greenhouse. Thankfully, nobody had been injured, but it had taken several hours to calm the scared Pokemon. Then there was paperwork for both events, plus all of the rest that had been pushed back due to how busy they’d been.

And she’d had to stay at her house in Eterna the night before.

That alone would’ve been enough to set her off today, but on top of all of it, Haji, her Espeon, was sick. Every time he was in pain, flickers of discomfort flashed across their mental link, no matter how much he tried to hold it back. Due to not being in top form, he couldn’t stop all of it. That meant Ivy was feeling a lot of his illness too. And it sucked.

One brave soul dared to approach the fuming Ranger. A small girl with short, curly blonde hair meekly stepped forward, holding a manila file.

Ivy stopped and sighed. As much as she was in a bad mood, she had work to do. “What,” she bit out.

The girl shakily held out the file. “I’m sorry to bother you, but… Leo… told me to g-give this to you. With Johanna and Cliff out, w-we’re a little short staffed, and Sammy was called with an e-emergency,” she mumbled.

The Ranger automatically grabbed the file and started walking again. “It’s fine—I’ll handle it,” she said. And she’d handle Leo later too, she thought darkly.

When she got to her office, she pushed the door open so hard that it hit the door stopper with a sharp bang. One of the two figures inside jumped.

“What do you want?” she snapped at the Gallade, glancing once at the first page in the manila folder and then tossing it onto her desk. The green and white warrior’s arms dropped from the cross they’d been in and he only blinked.

“Yeah, well,” she answered his look, “you’re not the only one who can be an asshole.” Normally their roles were reversed.

Then, she proceeded to ignore him as she gathered supplies for the run. Ever since Vergil had come into her company, the Fighting-type was nothing but caustic to her, even after she helped him to get stronger. No nice tactics had worked with him, and since she was just about as stubborn as he was, she was a little tired of playing suck-up. He tended to respond better to confrontation.

She felt Haji’s shaky energy brush against her mind. He had something to bring up, and he knew she wasn’t going to like it. That made her pause. Usually, the purple cat never got worked up over anything, maintaining his calm demeanor even in high stress situations. He was being cautious now.

“What is it?” she said, a little softer this time. She sighed and pushed her hair back from her forehead—she could feel a headache coming on due to the run-off from Haji’s sickness.

“I cannot go with you, but you cannot go alone,” he said against her mind. Vergil had crossed his arms once again, but he was looking away toward the open door, pointedly not at her. Ivy put two and two together pretty quickly.

“No-ho-ho,” she drew out, shaking her head and wincing when it hurt. “You must be sicker than I thought if you think me and Vergil going out to the mountain is a good idea.”

She felt Haji sigh through her mind. Ivy stubbornly crossed her arms and stared at him. Ever since poachers had broken into the Park and attacked her, the Espeon was adamant on not letting her wander around alone. But it wasn’t like she didn’t have other Pokemon. Vergil didn’t need to be recruited—she was pretty sure the Fighting-type was just as against this as she was.

“He has sworn to behave,” the Espeon said, not backing down. Oaths were something Haji took pretty seriously, and on a good day, so did the Gallade. The cat had probably threatened the fighter in order to get that oath, too.

Ivy rubbed her temples and sighed again. “Fine,” she said, too tired to argue. Then she looked at Vergil, dropping her arms when she realized they were miming each other. “All I need is one reason to snap. Don’t be it,” she warned.

The Gallade didn’t nod or show any sign of assent, but he didn’t respond with sarcasm either. That was a plus.

The Ranger reluctantly stepped closer to the fighter, nodding at Haji in farewell. “Let’s get this over with then. The Trainer we’re looking for is with a Tyranitar and Gengar, accompanied by Sammy.”

Ivy didn’t know how familiar Vergil was with the other energy signatures in the Park, but she figured issuing a challenge would probably keep him tolerable. It was hard for him to turn those down since he loved to prove how strong he was. The Ranger felt Haji’s amusement brush against her mind right before Vergil tentatively put a hand to her back and whisked them off with teleportation.

For a moment, there was the sensation of nothing, and then oppressive heat and a light ash-fall greeted them. Vergil stepped away automatically, and Ivy was glad for it—not just because neither of them liked their personal space intruded on, but because it was too hot to be too close to someone else.

There was a mighty roar, and the Ranger caught sight of a large rock reptile—a Tyranitar. He was battling under the direction of a Trainer with long dark hair. Sammy was standing a few feet off, so Ivy called out to her, informing her about the emergency and how Ivy would take over. After waving her off, she settled in to watch the fight. Vergil took up a sturdy warrior’s stance a few feet to the side and behind her, like a guard.

Ivy raised an eyebrow. “Haji really blackmailed you, didn’t he?” she asked with the hint of amusement.

Vergil stubbornly wouldn’t answer, but she saw the flicker of his eyes and the uncomfortable shift of his left food. Ivy shook her head and turned back to the Tyranitar.

It looked like he was attempting to fight a small red and gray bird, who looked pretty agitated. The big rock lizard looked around for a rock slab, reaching down to pick it up and hurl it. It flew through the air with a grunt of effort.

Looking around the field, Ivy saw that many other rocks were scattered around in unnatural shapes, so a similar attack must’ve been used before. The Fletchling let out a fierce battle cry in defiance.

The similar move was apparent in the next action. As Tyranitar pitched the stone at the bird, the flier darted in and then suddenly swerved to the side, reading the trajectory. However, a tip of the stone did knock into the bird’s foot, sending the Fletchling spinning through the air in a summersault motion.

It nearly dropped to the ground but managed to right itself, swooping back up as it skimmed ultra-close to the dirt. With an even angrier cry, it gained in speed until it was just a tiny blur against the dusty backdrop.

The bird took up a path around the Tyranitar, flying around him faster and faster until the wind began to respond. Dust and small rocks kicked up with the attack, forming a semi-hazy dust tornado whipping around the Trainer’s Pokemon. Ivy recognized it as a Razor Wind—a fairly strong move if used correctly. However, the bird wasn’t done.

Ivy saw the flickering of fire begin to start on the bird’s wings. That could be any sort of fire attack really, but combined with the wind, it could be deadly. It was a good thing they weren’t in the Gardens—Ivy was not in the mood to deal with another fire.

The wind was starting to bother the Tyranitar a little, she noticed. Although the rock lizard’s heavy plates protected its body, the dust and whipping wind was affecting his eyes. The Dark-type tossed his head and let out a displeased call, trying to shake and rid himself of the annoyance. He’d be battling half-blind if this kept up.

“Careful about underestimating small Pokemon,” the Ranger commented, crossing her arms as she stood back to see what the Trainer would do next.

Gaius turned his head as he heard footsteps, only to see someone else standing behind him instead of his original ranger. 'Terrific,' the trainer thought, 'I didn't even have a chance to talk to her or anything and she already bailed. Seriously I need to file one of those comment cards out when I leave here about the proclivity of staff to just leave people at a moment's notice. This isn't exactly the P1 Grand Prix tag-team match, where people can just come and go as they please.' He shook the frustration off and concentrated on the battle.

The wild Pokemon appeared to be slightly wounded by his Tyranitar's attacks, but the trainer knew that it still had significant fight left in it. 'I expected that last attack to do more damage, but it mostly missed it target. I had a feeling choosing moves that were sure-to hit would be the better option, but I just wanted to try and get the battle over with so I didn't use too much of my Tyranitar's strength in the first encounter.' The trainer sighed and tried to plan his next move. 'I've already used two of Tyranitar's rock-type attacks, so it wouldn't be smart to use those again as the Fletchling probably is expecting those moves. I guess I should just go with one of the other best moves that Tyranitar can learn. Normally I'd use Earthquake, but Fletchling is a Flying-type Pokemon as well as fire, so that attack would be useless. I guess Crunch is the best option then.' He then noticed the Wild Pokemon's retaliation in whipping up a strong wind. Gaius partially cupped his right hand over his eyes to shield himself from the harsh wind. Gaius watched as his Pokemon was slightly affected by the attack as well. 'Terrific, it's blowing sand in my Pokemon's eyes, which probably doesn't help accuracy at all then. Maybe Crunch isn't the best idea then.'

The wild Pokemon's wings then grew red with a touch of fire, signaling the next kind of attack that he would use.

'Just great,' the trainer thought, 'a fire attack next.' 'Although Tyranitar isn't weak to fire, Fletchling could potentially ignite the currents he placed earlier, creating some kind of fire tornado. I've got to patch this battle up quickly before my Tyranitar is down for the count.' He finalized his decision and then called out to his Pokemon.

"Tyranitar, quickly use Sandstorm to control the air around you and direct it to Fletchling. That way, when it uses its fire attack, it would be like Fire Spin-ing itself. After you can see better, rush at the wild Pokemon and use Crunch!" 'I hope I used sound judgment,' the trainer thought, 'that seems to be the only way out of this mess.'

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The air whipped faster and faster around the Tyranitar, the bird soaring with it at incredible speeds. It was probably a rush, but even if Ivy could manage it, she would pass. She much preferred her feet on the ground, where she could at least attempt to control her own motion.

A very faint crunch behind her made the Ranger turn her head, only to see that Vergil had stepped about a foot or so closer to her. Like her, he had is arms crossed. With a huff, Ivy stubbornly didn’t drop them this time. Surprisingly, the Gallade wasn’t glaring at her—he was glaring at the Trainer.

The red-haired woman looked back and forth between the duo, but the Trainer hadn’t really moved at all. How good were Vergil’s mental abilities? Ivy didn’t really know, since they rarely interacted beyond forced junctures like this, and Vergil had never tried to connect with her mind-to-mind. However, that didn’t mean he couldn’t read other peoples’ minds.

Did that mean the Trainer was thinking something insulting? Vergil was pretty quick to anger even with comments that weren’t really negative, but his creeping closer to her—probably on reflex, as his kind were often guards—was very curious. Vergil caught her looking and she nodded at him respectfully before turning back to the battle.

Ivy could still feel the fire rolling under her skin. If the Trainer wanted to make trouble, she would make some right back. There was no outcome today in which anyone was going to get away with insults or otherwise. And who knew, maybe putting someone in their place would brighten her mood.

The Tyranitar let out another semi-distressed call, and this led his Trainer to give some advice for his next moves. Gaius said, “Tyranitar, quickly use Sandstorm to control the air around you and direct it to the Fletchling.”

Being a Rock-type, as well as having an interesting ability, Tyranitar was at home with stirring up sand. Last she checked, however, calling up the dirt was a lot different than physically controlling it. Even Fletchling couldn’t do that—and it was part Flying-type. It had to use its physical body to help make its techniques work in certain ways.

Still, the rock dinosaur tried. A browner tint rose up into the air, scattering specs of dirt into the whirling wind. The Fletchling made a noise and put slightly more distance between itself and the tornado. Sand filled the air and eventually made the Tyranitar hard to see—adding debris had created a ground veil. Ivy could hear that the Fletchling was debating what to do next—the sandstorm hadn’t gained Tyranitar control of the wind, but it had hidden it from view for a short while.

Then, there was a snapping of jaws, and Tyranitar lunged partway out of the sand twister, biting at the bird. Not being able to see where its foe was coming from, the bottom half of the Fletchling was caught in the large Pokemon’s teeth. The avian let out a screech of discomfort.

It wasn’t willing to give up there, however. With another call, its eyes blazed red for a moment, and then a large sheet of fire flew up behind the bird. It shot toward the Dark-type, but the tendrils of wind snagged onto it. Then the sand twister erupted in fire.

Tyranitar let out a pained call which was also echoed by the Fletchling. After all, the bird was not Fire-type yet so wasn’t as tolerant of fire as it would be after it evolved. But although the attack stung the flier a little, the main goal was succeeded—Tyranitar released it as it stumbled back into the circle of flames.

Tyranitar’s quick retreat returned it to the center of the vortex, where he wasn’t being hit, but he couldn’t really move out from the fire tornado without being damaged either. The Fletchling took that opportunity to shoot skyward, racing higher and higher until there was at least triple Tyranitar’s height between the two Pokemon.

Ivy had to brace her hand above her eyes to see thanks to the sun, but it appeared that the light was glinting off the Fletchling’s wings—which looked pale silvery from that height. The bird reached its final ascent, and then gradually, it turned its body downward and began picking up speed. It was diving right for the Tyranitar.

The fire seemed to be fading, she noticed. If the timing was right, the fire would die out just as the bird struck. Its wings were still glowing that unnatural color on its rapid descent. The Tyranitar could risk moving, but it would likely be hurt in the process, and Fletchling would probably have time to alter its course. But staying still would leave the Rock-type open to attack.

There would need to be some careful thinking—and quickly.

    @WinterVines;

Gaius cursed under his breath as he saw his Pokemon enveloped in a flame tornado. 'I should have remembered that Tyranitar can't actually control the sandstorm that he uses, however it at least hindered the attack slightly and allowed him to make an attack unabated by the Fletchling.' He paused for a moment and started to consider his options. 'It's too dangerous for him to move out of there, and he cannot reach Fletchling from his current position, so I guess I have to find a way to remove the fire to give him a clear shot. I can't risk him being hurt or even worse getting the Burned status condition, which would cut his attack power level in half. There has to be a way out of this, I know it.'

He audibly gasped as he saw Fletching rise higher and higher, climbing above the fire-cyclone and preparing to aim straight for his Pokemon. A sneer crossed his face as he analyzed the wild Pokemon's change in tactics. 'How wonderful,' he thought, 'that silly bird has just given me the perfect opportunity for me to take it out. I just have to give Tyranitar the command to use its most powerful physical move and that Flying-type will be history.'

Tyranitar's most powerful physical type move based on base power was Giga Impact, a move that has one of the highest possible basic damage values out of any move; however it required the user to wait a turn before attacking again. Gaius knew that if the attack was successful, he would likely be able to capture the wild Pokemon at his next opportunity, causing the downside of Giga Impact to be non-existent.

The young trainer looked towards his Rock-type Pokemon and began to issue the command. "Tyranitar, look at Fletchling and wait until the last possible second to use your most powerful Normal-type Physical attack straight up!" Gaius smiled again and waited to see how his Pokemon's actions would play out in the next several seconds.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Flying-type sped toward Tyranitar in a blur, making it hard to see. Until the fire went out, the Rock-type could only sit there. He would either have to counterattack or just take the hit and retaliate afterward. As the Trainer thought of what to do, Ivy spied a glance toward Vergil.

The Gallade was tense, and his eyes were no longer on the Trainer but on the Fletchling instead. Ever since she had captured him on that event with her Crobat, he had been pretty adverse toward any type of Flying-type. At least he wasn’t attacking this one. Or the Trainer.

Finally, Gaius thought of something at the last minute. “Tyranitar,” he called, “look at Fletchling and wait until the last possible second to use your most power Normal-type physical attack straight up!”

The Rock-type took up a pose that was semi-familiar to Ivy. It looked a lot like Giga Impact, which was a high risk, high reward type of move. There would definitely be some power behind it in this case, since Tyranitar was so much bigger than Fletchling, but there was also fact that Fletchling could much easier dodge out of the way.

The fire started to fade, and then a sharp glint caught Ivy’s attention—the light on Fletchling’s wings. She now knew what attack the bird had been prepping, now that it was easier to see: Steel Wing. Looking up into the sun was difficult.

It might be for the Tyranitar too, she noticed, as he was instructed to keep an eye on the bird. Even without the sunlight, following a tiny spec against the rest of the sky was no easy feat. That’s one reason why she had never enjoyed golf. Still, the Rock-type tensed his muscles as he prepared for impact.

Then, there was a gust of air, and the two Pokemon collided. Tyranitar threw his body upward as best as he could, as he was instructed, which meant his huge body went into the air by about a foot or so. The Fletchling had locked its wings, and the “shing” sound they made sounded more like a sword than feathers.

An explosion of dust followed the impact, sending echoing cries from both Pokemon into the murk. Ivy covered her eyes as the wind blew the dirt all around them.

A form came sailing out of the mix, looking to be the Fletchling. It skidded across the ground for a good five feet, streaks of dirt and wear and tear telling on its feathers. Still, it wasn’t going to give up. With a chirp of effort, it wiggled to its feet and took flight again, darting back toward the Tyranitar.

The rock dinosaur had gotten off a hefty attack, but it had come with a price. He was bent over slightly, panting with effort. Even his eyes drooped. He was shaking his head as if he was disoriented, and Ivy soon saw why—a mark across his forehead was visible where the Fletchling had struck him.

This was the other downside of using such a powerful move—a Pokemon needed to recover for a minute afterward. And Fletchling was going to take advantage of it.

The bird whooshed by faster than Ivy thought possible, but then she saw the glowing underneath the bird—it was using an Agility to boost its speed, using its momentum much like it had with the Steel Wing. When it nearly ran into Tyranitar, it abruptly pulled its body up so it was feet first.

With a burst of energy, it slammed into the Rock-type’s side. Because Tyranitar was already not on his A-game after that Giga Impact. The force of the Fletchling’s U-turn, paired with the agility, was enough strength to send the already-tired rock dinosaur toppling over. He hit the ground with a rumble, and the ground shook where they stood.

The Fletchling soared back up, but only about head-height, and kept its distance. It was definitely feeling the strain of its injuries with heavy breathing and slower flaps of its wings.

OOC: Normally wouldn't I be able to move in the turn after GI or is that a lock that I can't even switch/item out of? I don't remember as I never use them in-game or urpg xD

    IC:

Gaius looked towards his Pokemon and was glad to see that his move overall had paid off. He hadn't intended his Pokemon to jump into the air, but now knew he should have been more detailed with his orders. He reached into his pocket and slowly pulled out a Park Ball. 'I think it's weak enough to catch now,' the trainer thought. 'I only wish that my Tyranitar had not taken so much damage after just one encounter, but I guess it cannot be helped. I just need to take care of this and then I can move on.' The young Pokemon trainer threw his Park Ball towards the weakened Fletchling, hoping that it would capture.

@mlouden03; The Park works nothing like the game sometimes. There are no “turns” or anything like that. The Park is more of a realistic thing. There’s more information in the Pedia that might be useful to you. Basically, most things come down to Trainer post quality and Ranger judgment.

    NBP#1

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

With his Pokemon down, the Trainer thought it would be a good idea for a capture. The Fletchling was tired, and there probably wasn’t much more either of them could do without it endangering one of them.

Gaius pulled a standard Park Ball out of his pocket, took a second to aim, and then threw it at the flier. It made a graceful arc and tapped the bird on the back, engulfing it in red light as the creature was sucked into the capture device. It fell to the ground with a soft thud, and the center of the ball lit up with a quiet locking sound.

“Congrats,” Ivy said, starting toward the Park Ball. She leaned down to palm it and stuck it into one of her zippered pockets. When she rose, Vergil was standing close, having moved across the field quietly. Haji got him good, looked like.

“I’ll hang onto this,” the Ranger told Gaius, patting her pocket. “Standard procedure until you’re ready to leave. If you’ll follow me, we can keep going.”

When the Trainer was ready, Ivy led onward, Vergil silent and always not too far away. They left the five-pronged rock formation behind and headed up the trail. This area was still relatively easy country—dry grasses formed waves of gray-green brush on the banks to either side of the trail. A lot of times, rough terrain Pokemon came down here instead of on the rocky surfaces of the mountain itself. Many of those Pokemon didn’t like the stifling heat of the inner volcano either.

They would reach the base of the mountain soon, and then there would be the choice of either going over the top or going through the center. Both areas had interesting Pokemon. Ivy didn’t really care which way they went. It was a toss-up on whether it would improve her mood—long walks usually gave her something to focus on, but the heat here was awful.

Soon, the path cut down into the earth a little bit as a rocky ridge formed up around them about two feet high. On the banks, more grasses grew in thick patches.

Suddenly, there was the whispering of the grass. Ivy stopped. She threw her hand up for the rest to pause, listening closely to the surroundings. Vergil sensed something too—his eyes were peeled, and even though the two of them weren’t linked, she could still faintly feel that his mental energy was scanning the environment.

Then, a small pebble came sailing out of the grass. Ivy knew it was coming toward her in those brief couple seconds. And then Vergil was there, slicing with his arm and knocking the rock away.

“Thanks,” she told him, knowing he probably wasn’t happy about it.

Before she could say anything, four more rocks were lobbed out of the grass, arching in a gentle slope to rain down on the group. A chittering laughter followed.

“Watch your head,” Ivy told the Trainer, watching the stones fall.

Gaius looked towards his new ranger as she picked up his Park Ball. "Ya, know," he began, "I never even caught my last ranger's name she left so fast, mind telling me yours?" He chuckled "I've never had a single ranger stick with me through a run before, and my first go I even had three different rangers because they kept on having stuff come up. Oy veh, I guess, but just would like a chance to finish something that I started with the same person."
He then looked towards Ivy's Pokemon and assessed it. "Hm, I've never seen one of those before." The beeping sound of his black-colored Pokedex was heard as he pulled it out of his pocket and scanned the Pokemon, which began to speak.

"Gallade," the computer voice stated, "the Blade Pokemon. Gallade the Psychic and Fighting-type evolution of Kirlia, with the possible abilities of either Steadfast, or Justified. A master of courtesy and swordsmanship, it fights using extending swords on its elbows. Because it can sense what its foe is thinking, its attacks burst out first, fast, and fierce." Gaius then closed the Pokedex and put it back into his pocket.

"Sweet, so Gallade is pretty much some kind of Pokemon knight, huh?"Gaius asked. "If it actually had some form of armor or something I bet it would be look pretty cool." He began to follow his ranger as she led him up the trail towards the mountain. Gaius began to feel the warmer as they drew closer to the mountain, but he kept his resolve. 'I can't let some warmth get the better of me, given everything that's happened so far.' He then turned to his ranger and began to speak.

"So, what made you want to be a ranger?" He asked, hoping to learn more about the person leading him. Gaius always had a tendancy to want to know more about those whom he traveled with in the park, so that he could compare their battle style to his own. "Was Gallde your first Pokemon from a Ralts?" His line of questioning was cut short when he saw the tall grass move, and noticed his ranger and her Pokemon react as well. 'Well, I wonder that that is,' he thought. 'Hopefully it's a nice Pokemon that I actually need.'

Suddenly a pebble shot out towards his ranger and the young trainer watched the woman's Gallade step in to intercept the pebble and destroy it. Before Gaius had a chance to react, he saw four more pebbles fly out from the grass. 'Well," he thought, 'at least this run isn't boring.' He quickly grabbed his Gengar's Pokeball from his waist and threw it into the air, calling out a command for the Pokemon was fully materialized.

"Gengar," he yelled, "use Focus Blast to deflect the rocks away from us and back towards that grass patch." The trainer knew that Focus Blast had a chance of missing, but hoped that the move would be enough to keep the group safe. He then prepared to face whatever came out from the grass.

@mlouden03; I know you like dialogue and stuff to boost MCR, but just be careful where you put it. I can’t really answer most of it without it being awkward/delayed/making no sense. The name thing is sort of implied as being answered already, since we’re way past that point in time.

Also you can’t use Focus Blast, as that was an EM you added after you signed up for this run.

    NBP#2

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Gaius scanned Vergil with his Pokedex and was pretty amazed at the warrior-Pokemon. Even if she and the Gallade weren’t on friendly speaking terms all the time, she could still feel the slight pride coming off of his energy.

The rocks coming down from before were going slow since they arched so high—it took a minute before gravity really took hold of them and increased their speed. That gave her a minute to answer one of the Trainer’s questions, if the Gallade had been her first Pokemon.

Ivy shook her head. “Zubat was my first,” she told him, tensing a little as the rocks got closer. Vergil shifted uncomfortably beside her—she guessed he was still embarrassed, and probably angry, about his extremely-swift capture in a Park event she had been on, using her Crobat.

The Trainer then had a plan for deflecting his own rocks. They probably wouldn’t hurt if they hit, but it was sort of annoying. Ivy was pretty sure Vergil wouldn’t block any more for her—and certainly not any for anyone else.

“Gengar,” the Trainer called, sending out his Pokemon. “Use Focus Blast to deflect the rocks away from us and back towards that grass patch.”

The ghost charged his body, preparing to use energy and do what his Trainer asked. Then, the Gengar got a confused look on his face and turned back toward Gaius questionably. Ivy recognized the look right away—Gengar probably didn’t know Focus Blast, since that was a move a Trainer had to teach their Pokemon.

Then, the rocks came down. Ivy side-stepped quickly to avoid one. Just as one was about to hit Gengar, the ghost went invisible, making the rock drop harmlessly to the ground. The Trainer was not as lucky. One stone came down and wacked him in the shoulder, though it wasn’t very large.

A laughing sound came from the brushes once all four of the rocks had fallen. From the grasses emerged a tan monkey with a flame on its head. It pointed at the Trainer and laughed again, its eyes crinkling in amusement as the Monferno laughed. Judging from the reaction, they had found the rock-throwing culprit.

“Mischievous things, sometimes,” Ivy said, “though this one strayed pretty far from its usual stomping grounds.”

Gaius shook his head when he saw that his Gengar couldn't perform Focus Blast. 'I forgot to teach him that before I entered the park, I have the TM still in the bag that I left at the reception desk, how could I be so stupid to forget that.' He felt the sting of the rock as it struck his body, and was sure that he would have a bruise by the end of the day. 'So he thinks he's funny huh,' the trainer thought, 'I wish I had time to show him not to mess with trainers, but I don't want to waste my time on him where I'm sure there are better Pokemon available later on.'

Gaius sighed and looked towards Ivy. "Yeah, I don't really want to waste my time trying to catch this guy. Can we just move on and try to find someone else? I don't really have much use for a Monferno right now, let alone an Infernape." He paused waiting for his ranger's response.

    @mlouden03; Escape didn’t work.

    NBP#3

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Trainer didn’t seem interested. Monferno was a fairly common starter Pokemon, particularly in the Sinnoh region. It was quite possible that Gaius could obtain one easily. Plus, Monfero would be a fairly competent battler at this stage in its life.

“Yeah, I don’t really want to waste my time trying to catch this guy. Can we just move on and try to find someone else?” he asked.

Ivy shrugged. “That’s not up to me; that’s up to him,” she said as she pointed to the monkey.

The most they could do was attempt to continue on. She eyed the Monferno as she took a few steps forward, planning on leading the group down the path. For a second, the Fire-type didn’t move, only watched from his higher position in the grasses.

When the Trainer took a couple steps, Ivy really thought it was going to work. Then, she felt Vergil tense and sighed. She turned to see the Monferno had narrowed its eyes and puffed its cheeks. It waited until the Trainer had his back to it before it flung a chunk of dirt. It exploded against Gaius’ back with a puff of dust.

Then, the Monferno laughed, holding hand over its mouth and pointing at the now-dirty Trainer.

Ivy ‘tsked’ at the wild Pokemon before speaking to Gaius. “You’ll have to be pretty careful what you say about the Pokemon around here—they’re just as intelligent as other ones. And sometimes more spiteful too. Or bored, in which case they might make trouble.”

As this one was trying to do. Gaius would have to think of something or else risk this monkey taking more drastic measures to get attention—like attacking him or his Pokemon.

Gaius hung his head as he noticed that his attempt to escape had been unsuccessful. 'Not this again,' he thought feeling annoyed. 'These Pokemon at the park always seem to not know when I don't want them. At this point I should just start having specific money set aside to buy Pokedolls so I don't have to mess around with stuff. I just want to find some Pokemon I want and be able to leave here quickly without wasting my Pokemon's hitpoints on useless battles.' He then turned towards Ivy and began to speak.

"Look, I'd just want to buy one of those decoy dolls so we can escape. I don't have a lot of time and don't wanna waste my time battling Pokemon that I have no intent of bringing home. Doing so would pointlessly hurt my Pokemon and would be a huge bother." He reached into his pocket and handed his ranger $500, just wishing to get on with his expedition as soon as possible.

    @mlouden03;

    NBP#4

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Trainer made an impatient sound as the Monferno continued to be insistent. He turned sharply on his heel and said he wanted to purchase a Pokedoll, adding, “I don’t have a lot of time and don’t wanna waste my time battling Pokemon that I have no intent of bringing home. Doing so would pointlessly hurt my Pokemon and would be a huge bother.”

Ivy shrugged, unzipping a pocket to withdraw one of the Clefairy-shaped Pokedolls from her vest. Honestly, he had probably wasted more time insulting the wild Pokemon than anything else. And if he hadn’t brought supplies to heal his Pokemon, that wasn’t her problem.

The Ranger shook her head as she found the tag to pull to inflate the toy to normal size. She wasn’t a cane-waver, but kids these days were too impatient. They wanted everything their way right now. Well, Ivy thought, this one would learn that Park runs were not meant to be breezes if he kept up with his sour attitude.

When the Clefairy plush was returned to normal, the Monferno immediately caught sight of it with eyes wide. The Ranger gave it a pointed look. “All right, you can have this, but then you need to make yourself scarce, yeah?”

The Fire-type nodded enthusiastically and dashed over to her, hanging over the dirt ledge as far as it could with its arm outstretched. Ivy placed the doll in its hands and watched it dash away into the grasses with only a whisper of wind.

She brushed her hands off. “Well, then, let’s go.”

They marched up toward the mountain, and the closer they got, the rougher the terrain. The dry grasses soon became more and more sparse, and they were replaced with rocks and boulders of varying sizes. Rocky juts stuck out of the ground, causing some climbing in some areas, although the path was mostly worn-enough for easy travel.

Soon enough, Ivy could see the split at the base of Deckbi—it was there that they could either pursue Pokemon through the mountain or go over the top of it. Ivy didn’t really care which way they went either way. The caves would probably be slightly cooler due to being underground, but it was still probably going to be uncomfortable either way.

“What are you looking for anyway?” she asked the Trainer as they followed the elevated path. That would probably determine which way he wanted to go.

Before she could get an answer, she heard a low shuffling sound. Ivy put a hand up to stop the group. Vergil looked around alert, so she knew it hadn’t just been her imagination.

In the area they were in, different rock faces hid a lot of the surroundings from view. This part may have been part of the main mountain at one point until the elements wore it away. All around them, walls of rocks rose and blocked off the fields beyond. It was almost a little claustrophobic, but she wasn’t bothered by it.

Then, she saw what had made the noise. A small, yellow camel Pokemon stuck a tan-colored nose out from behind a rock, its head tilted curiously at them so that its hair flopped toward the ground awkwardly. “Num?” it asked, shuffling slowly out so she could see it better.

It was a Numel, a slow but still intelligent Pokemon that had grown in popularity recently. Sometimes they spent time basking in the sun on the rocks. That’s probably why it was out here. It was certainly warm enough.

“What about a Numel?” she asked the Trainer.

Gaius smiled as he saw Ivy reach into her pocket and pull out a Clefairy plush doll. 'Good, the sooner I find someone else, the better,' he thought. He watched as the Monferno grabbed the toy and scampered off, leaving the pair alone. 'I hope the next Pokemon is someone actually competitive, just like the first one I ran into.'

Gaius followed his ranger as she led him towards the mountain, and the young trainer noticed that the terrain was becoming harder to navigate. He noticed Ivy speaking to him, asking what Pokemon he was interested in. It took a moment for him to think about it to decide whom he wanted the most. "I wouldn't mind an Onix," he responded. "Larvesta would be another good choice, Drillbur, or Rhyhorn. Heck even Gligar would be useful as I know that Gliscor is a nice Pokemon." The young man was mostly interested in rare or valuable Pokemon, or those who had great potential to be powerful. "If they're rare I can trade them to other trainers, or if they're powerful enough to keep I can raise them myself and battle with them."

He noticed a collection of rock faces as the pair of them entered a grouping of nearby rocks. Then, a small yelllow-colored Pokemon appeared from behind one of the rocks and looked towards them. Gaius quickly thought about the Numel and thought if he wanted it or not. "Its evolved form Camerupt is decent, but it's not what I'm looking for right now. I'd rather we try to find something else if possible."
