"Alpha," a muffled voice was talking on Alpha's cellphone. It was a voice message that always talks on its own and tells Alpha if he had another trainer to escort inside the park. "Alpha, in case you are still asleep, you are taking another trainer today. You are going to the Great Lakes and escort a guy named Magik. Please contact me as soon as you get this message. Over." The transmission had ended and Alpha was just barely awake.

"Nngh.. more trainers." He was rubbing both of his palms on both of his eyes, then he shoved the thick blanket away from his body and made his way towards a giant wooden closet. The bed behind him was a total drag; the pillows were placed randomly on the bed, the blanket was unfolded and covered some parts of the bed, and his cellphone was lying besides one of the pillows as well. He opened the brown closet and grabbed his orange ranger outfit and immediately dressed himself so that he could escort the trainer immediately.

"Magik? What is he, some sort of magician?" Alpha would bite his lower lip. He often made first impressions of trainers based from their first names. Hopefully, this trainer would be one of the happy-go-lucky trainers who would make their way to their destinations safely.

"I heard that, ranger." Another voice message appeared on his cellphone, obviously. "Hurry up and get out of your room!" the ranger official demanded.

"Yes, sir!" Alpha made a weird gesture by saluting near his nose instead of his eyebrow.

He made his way outside of his room and outside of the ranger building where he waited for his trainer to come.

"Calm down, Mence!" A young voice says exasperatedly. "I know flying's faster, but we're not supposed to fly into the Park!"

The speaker is a boy who's almost certainly no older than ten years of age. Walking with his Pokémon down the road leading to the National Park's front gate, the boy doesn't look at all like the kind of hardcore Trainers who usually flock to this haven for rare Pokémon. His messy brown hair clearly hasn't seen a pair of scissors in months, and it hangs down to partially obscure two dark blue eyes that shine with a childish optimism.

The Pokémon to which he's speaking snorts dismissively, inadvertently creating a hot wind that ruffles its Trainer's bright yellow t-shirt. Magik's Pokémon, a female Salamence, is a four-legged dragon with light blue scaly skin, a white underbelly with long plate-armor-like scales, and red wings that, when unfurled, extend nearly three feet in either direction, but that are currently folded against her sides. Her head, topped with a bony red crest, rises slightly above Magik's own five feet four inches. A rumbling growl of dissatisfaction emanates from Salamence's barrel-like chest.

"I don't know why, but rules are usually there for a reason," the boy named Magik tells his Pokémon. He frowns thoughtfully for a second, his pace slowing briefly. "Probably so people don't just fly in and do whatever they want. That lady at the sign-up said we'll have a Ranger leading us when we go in, so I guess they have the Rangers to keep an eye on everyone who comes to the Park." Magik's ever-present smile reappears as he visibly returns to a state of not thinking too hard about anything in particular. He hitches his compact blue backpack, which is clearly stuffed full to bursting with supplies for his upcoming National Park adventure, higher on his shoulders. "This is gonna' be fun!"

A muffled tinkling noise from underneath one of Salamence's folded red wings calls Magik's attention to his other companion. Further chimes, like metal bells of various sizes being struck in quick succession, can be heard as his second Pokémon, Starmie, peeks out from its hiding place under Salamence's wing. The water-type Pokémon's body, which is floating in midair by way of its psychic power, is a many-pointed purple star made of a hard chitin and set with a huge and many-faceted purple gem; the gem flickers with a soft violet radiance that is nearly invisible in the noontime sunlight.

    Starmie chimes again, more insistently.

"Oh, yeah, I'm sure the Ranger will be a nice person," Magik reassures his shy Pokémon with a grin. Most Trainers would be amazed that this timid Starmie was the same one that had fearlessly come to Magik's rescue on more than a few occasions, but Magik supposed that bravery in battle was one thing; being nervous about coming to a place with strange rules and new people, like this National Park, was another.

"How different can it be?" Magik continues optimistically. "We've already gone traveling through a bunch of routes and forests, right? The only change is that now we've got someone to keep us company. I'm sure you'll have a good time."

Starmie chimes doubtfully, receding back into its hiding place under Salamence's wing. Salamence snorts again; she has a bit less patience with Starmie's pessimism than Magik does. Nonetheless, she suffers the recalcitrant sea star to remain hidden under her wing: after all, she may find its outlook depressing, but there's no need to be mean about it.

The three arrive at the main gate of the National Park, a blocky two-storey building with a steeply sloping roof. It looks more like a rest stop than a business building; the style reminds Magik of the simple gatehouses that connect Johto's main Routes to one another, which consist of a single large room through which a constant stream of traffic passes in both directions, along with a staircase up to a small lounge where weary travellers can rest their feet and chat.

"This is the place where we're supposed to meet the Ranger," Magik says, more to himself than to his Pokémon. "In we go, I guess!"

Salamence, with Starmie still hidden underneath one of her folded wings, walks forward eagerly alongside her Trainer, ready to finally get this party started. The two, plus one, disappear into the large open doorway that is the entrance to the National Park's main gatehouse.

"Whaa!?" Alpha was surprised that once he got out from the building, he already met a trainer with a large Pokemon beside it. The blue dragon was more than enough to welcome Alpha right after he just got up from bed and prepared for the trainer that he was supposed to be escorting these moments.

"Alpha, that's the one! He's Magik!" the voice muffled out from Alpha's cellphone again.

"How can you even see me!?"

"Surveillance cameras. Works out every time." Alpha tried to look at the ceilings and the walls of the buildings, but he just couldn't find the cameras anywhere. "Its no use, Alpha. The cameras are actually built inside the walls and the ceilings, you'll never detect them!" his ranger officer cried out a weird laugh.

"Don't mind him, but if he says you're Magik, then please come with me." Alpha escorted Magik outside the ranger outpost and began to walk their way to their destinaion--which wasn't that far from where both of them were currently standing, at the Great Lakes.

While walking, the view was spectacular. To their left was a thick and verdant jungle with different kinds of Pokemon climbing vines, some were building nests for their homes, some were just hanging around with each other. To their right was a large mountain with different platforms where dark-typed Pokemon rested and waited for trainers to eventually capture them. Suddenly--which felt like only a few minutes--they were standing at a large seascape with stone pillars standing above the water for trainers to step on. There were bigger stone platforms that served as battlefields for land Pokemon the trainer could encounter at the Great Lakes.

"Doof?" a brown beaver-like Pokemon came out from the right side, it was building a small dam for itself.

"Wow, a Bidoof, you need one of this?" Alpha asked the trainer.

Magik eyes the Bidoof dubiously. "Well, it's not a Johto Pokémon, but... It's kinda ugly."

A buzz from the armband-like teal blue Pokégear on the boy's arm indicates that it has something to say on the subject.

"Bidoof," says a monotone, mechanical voice. "A Pokémon that is common throughout the Sinnoh region, it builds nests out of trees it chews down with its ever-growing front teeth."

A fleeting look of sadness crosses Magik's face as he listens to the automated response, as if he had been expecting something else, but his expression quickly returns to its usual beaming grin. "That sounds pretty cool. Maybe I'll catch—"

"It is also," the machine continues, interrupting him, "A renowned pest that, much like a Rattata, enjoys sharpening its teeth on the belongings of Trainers."

Magik does a double-take, then backs away slightly from the Bidoof, his eyes flicking to the bulging backpack full of valuables that protrudes over his shoulder. "Uhh... I think I'll pass on this one, thanks," he mumbles, as Salamence opens her mouth to roar with what passes for laughter.

The Bidoof jerks upright at the terrifying sound, for the first time noticing the people (and Salamence) watching it, and then flees in abject fear, to huddle in its dam and hope the scary dragon doesn't come after it.

"You'd better learn to tone down your laughter, Mence, or we won't catch anything," Magik jokes with a grin. "Anyway, I think it's time we went surfing! This lake is huge!"

Salamence suddenly takes to the air with another roar, impudently ignoring Magik's advice, and a purple many-pointed star Pokémon tumbles from under her wing.

Starmie lets out a disoriented chime of greeting at Alpha, who's staring dumbfounded at this Pokémon of Magik's he hadn't even noticed was there.

"Starmie, let's go swimming!" Magik yells exuberantly, leaping into the air in what can only be called an almost cartoonish excess of energy.

Starmie, with a tinkling noise that almost sounds like a sigh, floats down to let its Trainer sit on the softly glowing purple gem at the centre of its body; a thin, transparent purple bubble of psychic power appears around Magik, shielding the young Trainer and his belongings from getting wet (although his waterproof backpack doesn't particularly need such protection.)

As Starmie begins to float slowly towards the water, Magik looks back at his Ranger guide. "Do you want to ride with Starmie, Mr. Alpha? Or d'you have a Pokémon to Surf with?"

"Do you want to ride with Starmie, Mr. Alpha? Or d'you have a Pokémon to Surf with?" Magik asked Alpha.

"I'll just go by with these stone platforms on the ocean." Alpha began to walk through the Great Lakes. He walked on a long stony platform that extended towards nowhere, even Alpha doesn't know where it would eventually end.

While Alpha was walking, and while Magik was being carried by a large purple star-shaped Pokemon on its back. A yellow head popped out from the bottom of the large lake. "Buizel," it greeted Magik.

"Buizel, huh." Alpha stopped from walking and stared at the surfing couple.

Magik stares briefly at the otter Pokémon, and after a few seconds, his Pokégear pipes up.

"Buizel. A common Pokémon in the Sinnoh region, it frequents the surface of lakes and rivers, saving energy by inflating the floatation sac around its neck."

The Buizel chatters briefly, and then disappears out of sight under the water, the yellow air-filled tube around its neck deflating suddenly. Magik turns his attention back to the surface of the lake ahead of him, which is sparkling brilliantly in the early afternoon sunlight. Starmie, bearing him forward at a pace that forces Alpha to trot along the walkway to keep up, doesn't seem to be tiring; in fact, the clean water seems to be revitalizing the Pokémon in a way the beautiful weather couldn't.

An exuberant roar from above is the only warning as Salamence drops from high overhead, breaking the water's surface with an almighty splash. The wave from the dragon's dive splashes harmlessly off of the purple orb of energy keeping Magik dry, but makes the walkway Alpha is on rock back and forth. Salamence's head breaks the surface, her deadly-looking teeth stretched in a wide and faintly disconcerting grin. Magik, unperturbed, grins back at the Pokémon, glad his companions are having fun. After all, he's here mostly to see the sights, though he wouldn't object to capturing one of a few Pokémon that had been listed as 'wanted' on the mission boards back at the Pokémon Center in town.

"Hey, Alpha?" Magik asks, turning to the Ranger jogging alongside Starmie's path through the water. "Why is the National Park so far away from the nearest town? I had to take a boat just to get here from the closest island, because there's no Pokémon Center on this one."

Magik stared at the Buizel until it went down underwater again, its yellow floation device deflated. "Hey, Alpha?" Magik broke the silence, as Alpha turned his head to look at Magik. "Why is the National Park so far away from the nearest town? I had to take a boat just to get here from the closest island, because there's no Pokémon Center on this one." Alpha looked at the skies and pondered.

"Pro'lly because that the park is on an island, and that could possibly be one of the cases that there are no near Pokemon Centers on this island." Alpha looked at the rocky platforms. He was walking on a long rocky platform, he jumped from a rock to another if the road is broken. His shoes click clacked as he walked at the platforms with his heels landing first.

"Seaking!" An orange fish Pokemon came below the sea, its white fins shined brightly because of the sun, until it landed back on the water again.

"Cool, a Seaking, that's not one of the common encounters here!" Alpha stopped and glanced at Magik, the horn of the Seeking was seen above the water, with its eyes near it.

"A Seaking!" Magik shouts, looking even more excited than usual (if that's possible.) "I've heard of those! They're really popular."

"Mence. Salamence." Salamence growls some instructions at Magik, and he turns to look askance at her.

"That's a bad word, Mence. Can't I just say 'Hell yeah,' or something?"

The dragon responds with a roar, decidedly in the negative. Apparently, there is only one way to properly challenge a Seaking to a duel.

"All right, fine," Magik says with a sigh. "Here goes. F*** YEAH, SEAKING!"*

The Seaking turns its somehow malicious glare on the boy, and Salamence flaps her way down to hover in front of her Trainer, returning the fish's malevolent gaze with an intimidating stare of her own. Without anything more being said, all parties involved know the battle has begun.

"Salamence, use Dragonbreath!" Magik instructs his Pokémon.

Salamence nods curtly, then hurtles forward with a mighty flap of her wide-spread wings. Opening her fanged maw, she lets loose a torrent of purple flames that spill painfully over Seaking's body and onto the surface of the lake; but even upon contact with the water the fires refuse to go out. The Dragonbreath begins to sink slowly downwards in a curtain of underwater fire, cutting off possible escape routes, at least near the lake's surface.

Finishing her fiery sweep, Salamence gains altitude, surveying her handiwork: a long curving line of purple fire along the lake's surface. Has Seaking been hit, or did it manage to duck underwater in time to escape the draconic flames?

    IC:

"Here goes. F*** YEAH, SEAKING!" Alpha's eyes widened when he heard what Magik said. Then he stopped and pondered to guess Magik's age--it probabaly ranges from fifteen to nineteen. Either way, this marked Alpha's first time to hear a trainer curse at a Pokemon, it was also because of his Pokemon. "Salamence, use Dragonbreath!" Magik commended.

Salamence nodded, and approached Seaking, suddenly it roared loudly that made Seaking a bit intimidated and scared. "Wow, that should hold its attacks for now," Alpha said to himself. Then it opened its mouth to release a large beam of purple flames that made its way directly towards Seaking, which hid underwater and hoped that it wouldn't get attacked by Dragonbreath.

The purple flames made a single line while underwater, fending off some Pokemon as well. Unnoticingly, Seaking's body got covered with the purple flames until it rose back up to face Salamence. It jumped above the water to find out that its body was glowing with the same color of the purple flames--the Dragonbreath must've just hit Seaking by now.

Suddenly, water rings started to cover Seaking. It circled and surrounded it as it gave Seaking some health. The water rings were shining brightly when the sun shone at it. Aqua Ring was an attack that gave a little bit of HP as time passed by. Then Seaking went back towards the water, wanting to show Salamence its shiny blue rings.

"You need to come up with combos if you want to damage Seaking easily," Alpha advised Magik as he watched at a distance, standing at the stone platforms.

"All right, Mence! Dragon Claw; Try and pull the Seaking out of the water, then use Fly to drop it from high up!"

The Salamence roars and swoops down to fly over the wind-ruffled surface of the lake, quickly locating Seaking just under the surface. In a sudden explosion of water, the dragon plunges her deadly taloned forefeet down into the lake and roughly seizes hold of Seaking.

Angling her wings upwards, Salamence shifts her trajectory upwards into the sky, beginning to flap as her momentum runs out. With the struggling Seaking still grasped in her claws, the dragon climbs ever higher until both Pokémon are tiny figures in the distance.

Then, she lets go, allowing the Seaking to plummet; it may be a water-dweller, but even a flawless dive from that altitude would hurt severely upon hitting the water.

OOC: Sorry for the delays. You know the reason. XP

    IC:

"All right, Mence! Dragon Claw; Try and pull the Seaking out of the water, then use Fly to drop it from high up!" Magik quickly commanded as Alpha watched the battle above a stone platform.

Salamence rushes from the sky and swoops down towards Seaking, who's head was currently peeking above the water. Salamence's talons glowed brightly and grew larger until it striked Seaking with full force. Seaking was tossed from one part of the large water site to another place, splashing water drops as well.

"Wow, this battle is getting tougher. I can feel the rivalry between the two," Alpha whispered to himself. Seaking leaped above the water to show Salamence's aqua rings that surrounded its body, touching a bit of its wounds and healing it so that Seaking could feel a bit better. Then its horn on its head glowed, whirred and jumped once more and went towards Salamence, hoping to hit it with a Horn Drill. Its horn struck Salamence on its lower body, roaring in pain.

Salamence tried to counter Seaking by grabbing it using its four arms and soared high above the sky, until it decided to crash down towards the water with Seaking. Magik knew that even in that altitude, once Seaking reaches the water, the pain could be severe because of the impact. Before Salamence reaches the water, it released its arms to make Seaking fall to the lake as Salamence made a sharp turn to avoid the water.

    "Neat." Alpha smiled.

"Salamence, use Thunder Fang!" Magik shouts, nearly falling off of Starmie in his exuberance.

Hearing him, Salamence rushes towards the giant fish once more, her mouth wide open and displaying a dangerous set of pointed teeth that are trailing sparks.

    IC:

"Salamence, use Thunder Fang!" Magik shouted. Salamence opened its mouth, electrical sparks started to be seen in its vicious pointy teeth. Hasty enough, it dashed towards Seaking, hoping that it could land a successful bite with its electrifying fangs.

"A typical move, I could say." Alpha scratched his chin. Without any efforts at all, Seaking dived underwater to avoid Thunder Fang, but Salamence followed Seaking underwater as well. Afterwards, Seaking jumped in the water as the rings of water appeared once more, and healed its wounds slightly. "What happened to Salamence?" Alpha pondered, when he saw Salamence rose from the water, looking exhausted. It must've searched for Seaking underwater but failed to do so, and ended up getting half-drowned.

When Seaking was submerged in water, it created copies of itself underwater, using Double Team. Underwater, it waited for Salamence to attack it while Seaking and the clones spread out in the lake before it rises up to reveal its head.

"That is one confusing event," Alpha said in disappointment, seeing there are at least six Seakings visible.

((Eh, I got bored of writing a long post for each one, and forgot the post quality matters. Bleh.))

Looking disappointed, Magik squinted at the various Seaking copies, trying unsuccessfully to figure out which one was real. "Hmm. Mence, try that again, but keep it on the surface with a Dragonbreath this time."

Salamence, catching her breath, inhaled deeply and then let loose with another stream of purplish flames. These, however, instead of being aimed at any of the Seaking clones, raced into the water before reaching the fish. Then the draconic flames spread into a solid square a few feet under the surface of the water, blocking the Seaking from fleeing into the depths.

"Now, Thunder Fang! Keep going until you find the real one!"

Salamence flapped her bright red wings once, then swooped low over the surface of the water, her fangs crackling with small arcs of lightning. With a crack! that came more from a discharge of electricity than from the snap of jaws, Mence's Thunder Fang attack rendered an illusory copy into nothing, and she flew onwards without even the slightest hesitation, to swoop at her next target.

Magik watched tensely, wondering: which one is the real Seaking?

"Hmm. Mence, try that again, but keep it on the surface with a Dragonbreath this time."

"What's he doing?" Alpha thought to himself. He watched as Salamence released a flame of bluish green, it began to spread through the waters that was sure to prevent the Seaking and its clones from escaping Salamence by diving deeper into the sea.

"Now, Thunder Fang! Keep going until you find the real one!" Magik commanded.

Salamence quickly swooped down from the skies until its teeth was covered with electrical sparks and began to bite Seaking one by one. Slowly, it was biting its clones because it faded into the air as soon as Salamence would bite it. Until the last Seaking near Alpha was the last one left. Hastily, Salamence approached Seaking and bite it using Thunder Fang. It caught Seaking tightly and tossed it into the air. While Seaking was in mid-air, two water rings appeared on its body once more before it splashed into the water, being halfly burned with Dragonbreath.

"Oh no." Alpha felt that there was something in Seaking's movements that Salamence wouldn't like at all.

Seaking's head popped in the water again, its mouth was aimed directly at Salamence until a beam of icy white light shot quickly towards Salamence. Luckily, only its wing was hit and turned into solid ice, which made Salamence had a hard time flying.

((I'll let you decide whether the 'square' of dragonbreath remains where it was for more than one post, blocking escape but not dealing damage.))

Salamence roared in pain, and Magik began to frantically scramble for her Poké ball. Finding it, and lifting it to return his Pokémon to safety, he was cut off by a second roar, this one of anger. Mence had no wish to return; she wanted revenge, and was perfectly capable of continuing to fight.

No longer acting under Magik's control, Mence started making her own decisions; she had some new techniques she wanted to try out on this upstart Seaking!

Her ice-encased wing was a problem, though; staying airborne would be unnecessarily painful. Fortunately, Mence had no need to fly to defeat this upstart fish: she was a skilled swimmer as well as a graceful flier.

Folding her wings, Mence plummeted out of the air, cannonballing into the water directly above the Seaking; as she did, she slammed her thick, scaly tail down on the lake's surface, which produced a massive shockwave, larger than even her bulk should have been able to create. The Earthquake attack would have caused solid ground to shake and crack, but in water, it created a visible, expanding sphere of pressure instead. Running into the edge of the shockwave would feel like hitting a brick wall.

Mence wasn't done, though. As the shockwave rushed in all directions, including towards Seaking, Mence whipped her tail back and forth, propelling herself through the water behind it. Her wings, both the undamaged and the ice-encased, turned silvery and began to gleam like metal in the diffused light that reached down into the water from the sun.

Seaking was struck by the Waterquake, and before it could so much as react, its opponent's ice-coated Steel Wing smashed into its face. In the water, Mence wasn't moving as fast as she could have if she'd been flying, so the move wasn't particularly effective, but it did have the additional effect that Mence had been hoping for. The ice covering the wing shattered; normally, this would have been an extremely painful process and would have damaged the wing itself, but the metal that Mence's wings were temporarily made of was not so easily made brittle.

Instead of turning for another pass, Mence, with a swish of her tail, diverted her momentum to send herself up towards the surface, bursting into the air with a triumphant roar and beating her now-normal wings to gain altitude.

"Wow, good job, Mence!" Magik said, clapping his hands together and looking as excited as a nine-year-old possibly can (which is, of course, obscenely so.) He knew he could always count on Mence, even if she didn't always listen to him when she was fighting an opponent she didn't like.

((First run. ;D also, gender on Seaking?))

Alpha looked on in disbelief as the Slamence performed a fantastic combonation attack entirely on his own. Even with the ice that covered its wing slowing it down, it was a formidable opponent when it became enraged.

Ignoring her trainer's attempts at recalling her, the draconic Pokemon dive bombed the water, sending a shockwave that, if it were to have been on land, would have shattered concrete like ice and caused the ground to ripple. The force was none other than an Earthquake and the wave of pressure it caused did severe damage to the foe. Then, as if this attack weren't enough, the Mence dove into the water while its wings turned metallic. Normally, steel type attacks don't fare very well against water, but this attack was not simply an attack. While in the water, the steel coated wings slammed into the fish Pokemon. This did little damage, but it broke the ice that coated Salamence's wing. I winced for the sake of the dragon, because such a slam would have hurt it as well. But then I realized that the metallic wings absorbed the blow and caused no damage to the Pokemon that was full of a draconic fury. The Salamence flew skyward and away from the water as the Seaking tried to gather itself together.

"Wow, good job, Mence!" Magik shouted gleefully, congratulating his Pokemon.

Suddenly and without warning, the Seaking burst out of the water, showering everyone around it with water. It fired a thin burst of ice and then dove back into the water to attack once more. My guess was that, if Salamence evaded the Ice Beam attack, which was likely, the fish would pop back up with the end stage of a Dive attack.

"Be careful," Alpha called. "Dodge this and be wary of Seaking. It's using Dive!"

Mence snorted disdainfully, a small puff of smoke emanating from her nostrils, and spun aside in midair to avoid the beam of ice, her surprising grace giving the lie to her bulk. Turning around and flying back to her Trainer, she scanned the water for the hiding fish to no avail.

Magik nodded as his dragon Pokémon, finally content with the fact that her opponent had got its comeuppance for freezing her wing, belatedly returned to his side. She swooped in a tight semicircle to land on the lake's walkway, dangerously close to the attending Ranger, with an apparent disregard for his safety. Luckily, she avoided clipping the man with her wings as she folded them and snorted again, curling up nonchalantly on the boardwalk.

"All right, take a break then, Mence. Starmie, your turn!"

Starmie let out a quiet tinkling noise, like a bunch of tiny bells shaken with a distinct lack of enthusiasm. A purple glow surrounded Magik, and an otherwise invisible force lifted the nine-year-old off of Starmie and over to the walkway on which the Ranger was standing.

Starmie, the source of Magik's levitation, moved out into the section of the lake that had become the battleground, careful to avoid the scattered purple flames that remained, slowly dying, under the water.

"Get ready to use Thunder Wave, Starmie!"

As if to answer Magik's command, Seaking suddenly swam into view, rushing at high speed from the depths towards the many-pointed purple star Pokémon. The purple gem in Starmie's center began to glow with a bluish light, the two colours mixing to produce an odd maroon shade. At the same time as building up a positive charge in its gem, Starmie used its psychic power to create a negative charge in its foe. As Seaking drew near, the inverse-square law took effect, sending a jolt of paralyzing electricity through the fish, visible as a thin blue trail of energy in the highly conductive water between Starmie and Seaking.

Starmie, however, wasn't done. Lack of enthusiasm aside, the Pokémon knew what it was about. Instead of letting the charge go, Starmie merely intensified it, and drew swiftly closer to Seaking. The energy trail doubled in size, then quadrupled, turning into a roaring Thunderbolt attack! Bubbles, made of hydrogen and oxygen gas extracted from the water by hydrolysis, exploded upwards from both Pokémon at the ends of the Thunderbolt, and Seaking thrashed in agony. Starmie, unharmed and perfectly in control of the power which it was channeling through its gem, finally let go of the psychic effort it took to create such a great charge differential, and the Thunderbolt attack disappeared.

Seaking, its muscles spasming, did the aquatic version of a limp towards Starmie, who didn't even bother to dodge as the fish completed its Dive attack, barely even scratching the psychic sea star.

Mence snorted and quickly dodged the thin beam of ice. Not being able to find the fish that had dived underwater and having finally found revenge against the foe, it flew back to Magik, nearly clipping Alpha with its wings in the process. The Draconic Pokemon then curled up, uncaring of where the Seaking went. Sensing a better idea, Magik recalled Salamence.

"All right, take a break then, Mence. Starmie, your turn!"

He let the starfish Pokemon get used to the surroundings as it levitated the kid to where Alpha was standing.

"Get ready to use Thunder Wave, Starmie!"

The Starmie looked around a little and then, as if it didn't really want to battle, sent a small, weak jolt of electricity through the highly conductive water in the direction of the Seaking. The bolt was tinted a strange blue-green color by the water. The Seaking, who had just surfaced to begin finishing the Dive attack, caught the attack full-force, causing it to spasm as the sparks ran along its hide.

Starmie, seeing that the foe had been weakened, intensified the ray of electricity into a large Thunderbolt attack. It slammed the Seaking back a little, damaging it by a lot. As the flailing Seaking neared the sea star, the Starmie didn't bother to dodge at all. It simply let the Seaking use its weakened attack.

Then, as a reprisal for what had happened, the Seaking, seeming to forget the paralysis that it faced, swam as fast as it could backwards and then charged forward, leaping out of the water and spinning rapidly. A last ditch Horn Drill.

"Watch out!" I told Magik, who was right next to me. "If that hits it'll one hit KO your Starmie!"

With all eyes riveted on the fish's struggle against Starmie, Magik has gone unnoticed as he digs a National Park Super Ball out of his waterproof, compact blue backpack. With a shout of, "Go, Poké ball!" he hurls the green-and-orange device, which immediately detects the presence of a Pokémon not linked to a capsule. It alters its trajectory slightly to land directly on the onrushing Seaking's head, pulling the fish inside in a burst of red light that looks purple against the brilliant blue of the lake.

The spherical capsule closes and falls into the water, where it remains, floating. As Magik unconsciously tightens his fists in suspense, a lighted button on the front of the Super Ball pulses red, once... twice...
