All eyes were riveted to the scene, watching the battle go back in forth, for and against the wild Seaking. While the Seaking began to execute its most destructive attack, Magik had a little something else planned.

"Go, Poké ball!" the kid shouted, hurling a small green and brown Super Ball

The capture device sailed through the air before finally landing smack on top of the fish Pokemon's head. It was sucked in and began to wobble. Once, twice... All the world seemed to hold its breath as it finally clicked a third time and stopped shaking. The only problem was that it was floating in the middle of a lake.

Magik tried to have one of his Pokemon go and get it, but Alpha shrugged him off.

"No, that's my job. You stay back here," he said as he dove into the lake after taking off his backpack.

After a little swimming, he came upon the Super Ball which contained the captured Seaking. He picked it up and swam back to shore. But, as he did so, something else was following him.

As soon as Alpha had stepped onto shore, wringing his cloths, a large and furious Kabutops appeared behind him. It slashed with its large forearm, which had a great claw, dropping the Ranger to his knees with pain, all while little Magik was watching.

    "Help?" Alpha moaned.

"Aah!" Magik yelped. Alarmed for the Ranger's safety, he pointed at the Kabutops.

    "Starmie, Grass Knot!"

Obediently, Starmie turned and spun slowly through the water towards the Kabutops, the purple gem in its centre turning faintly green and giving off a soft light. As Starmie advanced, aquatic plants drifting near the surface of the lake came to life, growing with abnormal speed and reaching for the Kabutops with green tendrils. Though the rock-armoured Pokémon slashed at the aqueous vines, there were too many; they quickly twined around the Kabutops and immobilized it, its bulky armour working against it as it struggled to slice its verdant bonds.

Magik took a moment to gape, and even snap a quick photo of the struggling Pokémon using the camera that had been hanging around his neck, before remembering that Alpha had been hurt.

"Hey, Alpha, are you all right?" he asked, rushing over to the Ranger with concern.

Nearby, Starmie was just reaching the bound Kabutops, its gem glowing with bluish light now as it charged a Thunderbolt, prepared to send the offensive lake-dweller plummeting back into the depths.

"Aah!" Magik yelped, but then he recovered his initiative. "Starmie, Grass Knot!"

Magik's Starmie obeyed and lashed out with green tendrils of plant, tripping and slowing the Kabutops. Despite the Rock type's attempts at avoiding the attack, it fell flat on its stoney face. Magik quickly snapped a picture, blinding the creature with a bright light. He then turned to the injured Alpha.

"Hey, Alpha, are you all right?" he asked, rushing over to the Ranger with concern plain on his face.

"I don't think I can take you through the park anymore," Alpha groaned. "I've already called the Ranger station for a Ranger. He should be here soon."

Starmie, on the other hand, was focused on the offending Kabutops. The sea star Pokemon began to charge a ball of electricity, threatening the Kabutops. Suddenly, the rock type lunged out, severing the grass keeping it in place. It then dashed away, towards the water, but not without taking a hit from the Thunderbolt.

The Kabutops vanished into the depths of the lake, far from pleased, a bright metallic Pokemon appeared in the horizon, flying. The Skarmory landed down between the two humans standing on the beach, plopped a letter at Magik's feet and then flew off with the near-unconscious Alpha in its talons.

    The letter read:

    Dear Magik,

I am Domonic Stone, the Ranger who will be taking the place of the injured Alpha. I will be flying over to you shortly. Sit tight!

Magik stared at the letter for a moment after he'd finished reading it. Salamence, standing on all fours behind her Trainer, craned her long neck to look over his shoulder, despite not being able to read.
"Oh, it says the replacement Ranger will be here soon." The nine-year-old explained to his Pokémon, a worried look on his face. "I hope Alpha's okay."
What Magik didn't know was that the gash the Kabutops had inflicted on Alpha's back was large but shallow; it bled a lot, but it meant that the only major threats it posed were blood loss and infection, both of which would be no problem provided Alpha got to a safe place and received medical attention.
"Well... I guess we have nothing to do but wait for the new Ranger to get here, right?" Magik asked, looking at his Pokémon for guidance. Salamence unfolded her wings slightly in her version of a shrug; Starmie, rising out of the water and floating into the air above the walkway on the lake's surface, gave a chime of dubious agreement.
A few minutes passed, and Magik began to grow bored. He began to dig through his pack, and after a few minutes came up with a chocolate-covered snack bar, tearing off the shiny silver wrapping and stuffing it back into his compact blue backpack before downing the whole bar in three bites. His immediate hunger sated, he dug through his pack a bit more for something else to do, and came up with a little rectangular blue machine he'd forgotten he had. Pressing a button on the top of the device, a lid on the top snapped open, revealing a disk inside.
"Oh, right. I bought this from the Park Shop, didn't I? It plays disks with Pokémon calls on them. We should try it out!"
The boy pressed closed the lid again and pressed the 'play' button on the voice disk player. Bell-like tinkling noises, similar to the ones Starmie made but slightly higher-pitched, began to emanate from the small speakers on the sides of the machine.
!?!?!? Starmie let out a shrill chiming noise of alarm at the sound. The gem at its center began to glow pink, and a pair of purple glowing earplugs materialized and jammed themselves into Magik's ears.
"Hey, Starmie, what're you doing?" Magik said, looking confused.
!!! >=(, responded Starmie's chiming voice, somehow managing to impart disapproval.
Magik couldn't hear his Pokémon, but the inexplicable bond between Pokémon and Trainer that allowed him to understand Starmie apparently worked without the help of the mundane senses. "The voice on the disk... has lots of bad stuff on it? What do you mean by 'bad?'" the boy asked, puzzled. "Bad like swearwords?"
...; <_<. Starmie responded. ... XXX! A dark blue tinge appeared along the edges of several of Starmie's arms, the colour looking suspiciously like a blush against the purple of the psychic sea star's body.
"Ohhh. You mean like that," Magik said, blushing too. "But I can't understand the disk, anyways, so can you please take the ear plugs out? I'm gonna' need to be able to hear to talk with the replacement Ranger."
Starmie relented with a final quiet chime of disapproval, and the energy earplugs dissolved from Magik's ears. It hardly mattered: the only sounds were the breeze rippling the lake, and the unintelligible (but presumably profane) litany emanating in the chiming voice of a Staryu from the voice disk player.
Looking back over the lake in the direction he'd come from, Magik thought he could see a slowly growing speck on the horizon, like a flying Pokémon approaching. Maybe that was the replacement Ranger? As if to answer, there was a metallic glint from the speck, possibly sunlight on the wings of a particular Skarmory. "I think that's him," he said, pointing for the benefit of Salamence and Starmie. All three turned to wait for the new Ranger.

As I flew in on my Skarmory, I could only wonder what would happen. Poor Alpha had been taken by surprise by a stealthy Kabutops. I could not let that happen to me. I wondered what the Trainer was like, even though I had his file. It said that he simply went as "Magik". Did he have Psychic powers or something?

I swooped in and the Trainer's image became clearer. Through the orange tint of my goggles, everything looked either green or brown but I could see his shape clearly. He had a Starmie and a Salamence with him.

I landed on the ground, returned my Skarmory and replaced it with a Gliscor. My Gliscor would be happy to have some new company. I shifted my goggles up farther on my head, snapping the world into color. I then introduced myself.

"I am Domonic Stone," I told him. "As you may have guessed, I am now to take you through the park and, don't worry, I have the captured Seaking that Aplpha had in his backpack."

I then heard a faint tinkling sound which came from the boy's tape recorder.

"So you played that music, huh?" I asked. "I'd be surprised if there wasn't a Staryu here by now."

Now that I could see in full color, I noticed a brownish star behind Magik. It was a Staryu.

"Look!" I said, pointing. "There's a Staryu. It responded to the voice disk. Do you want to capture it?"

"A Staryu, already? Wow." Magik looked excited. "Uh, pleased to meet you and everything, but I gotta' go battle this Staryu first, okay, Mr. Stone?"
Starmie, floating in the air next to its Trainer, let out a disapproving tinkle. Clearly it didn't have a very high opinion of the kind of Pokémon that would respond to this voice disk.
"Aw, come on, Starmie. It's not like we'll even be keeping it. This is for that girl who really wanted a Staryu, I think she called herself Scourge?"

    >=| Starmie was unimpressed.

Despite its continued grumbling chimes, the psychic sea star began charging a Thunderbolt attack, signaled by a blue electric light building in the gem in its center. A moment later, a ruthless bolt of lightning roared out of the star's center, aimed straight at the mostly unsuspecting Staryu. The bolt was immediately followed by a weaker pulse, a Thunder Wave meant to paralyze the wild Pokémon for easier capture.

Starmie's detached and dismissive efficiency, born of disdainful disapproval, was as devastating as its dire deluge of dynamic potential-difference-derived doom. Surely the Staryu couldn't ignore such impossibly impassioned impacts of imbalanced immovable charges? No, certainly the concussion was cruelly crippling and concretely critical, so regenerative recovery or rebound would be remitted and remiss. Entertainingly, electrical emissions of an emphatic and energetic ebullience were exceptionally effective against the oblivious objective of Starmie's overconfident offensive.
Magik's alliterative anticipations of his aim's attainment grew arduous and awkward, and abbreviations were aggressively abjured by all.

((tl;dr: THERE'S NO WAY HE COULD HAVE SURVIVED THAT!))

"A Staryu, already? Wow." Magik looked excited. "Uh, pleased to meet you and everything, but I gotta' go battle this Staryu first, okay, Mr. Stone?"

"Mr. Stone is my father, call me Domonic," I said, but it was lost among the kid's excitement to see a Staryu.

His Starmie seemed annoyed. I had no clue why, but it seemed that the voice disk was more than it seemed. Bashful Pokemon were not easy to anger.

"Aw, come on, Starmie. It's not like we'll even be keeping it," Magik told his Starmie. "This is for that girl who really wanted a Staryu, I think she called herself Scourge?"

The Starmie then began to charge up a Thunderbolt attack. After the ball of electricity had grown to a substantial amount, Magik's Pokemon fired the blast in the Staryu's direction. It then followed up with a smaller, weaker wave of electricity. A Thunderbolt and a Thunder Wave charged forward, slamming into the Staryu.

Greatly injuring the Pokemon, the Staryu began to cloak itself. It camouflaged itself into the water, hiding. The Starmie's attack had obviously crippled the Stayu extremely. The only attack it managed was a small Bubblebeam that didn't even hinder the Starmie's advance. When the electricity finally began to dissipate, there was no sign of the Staryu. It had hidden itself completely.

"Magik," I said to the boy. "There should be a patch of water that looks different. That's where the Staryu has hidden itself."

I glanced around but couldn't find the patch that would indicate the Staryu's existence. It would be up to Magik to find it.

Magik squints at the lake, his young features screwed up in a comically serious look of intensity. His gaze shifts back and forth, trying to pick out the Staryu from amidst the camoflauging waters. "Starmie, I can't see anything... Try lighting up the water with Flash Cannon!"

The psychic sea star Pokémon's gemlike core begins to pulse once again, this time with a steely grey light that grows more and more intense with each passing second. The sun seems slightly dimmer in contrast to the dimmer but much closer brightness of the charging Flash Cannon move, and each pulse of brightness casts long shadows from Magik, Domonic, and their waiting Pokémon. However, the onlookers aren't the only ones who cast a shadow.

"There!" Magik shouts excitably, pointing at the dark, elongated star-shaped shadow stretching out of a nondescript patch of water. "The Staryu's shadow!"

His Starmie, following its Trainer's gesture, looses its Flash Cannon attack, causing a ball of searing grey light like a magnesium flare to fly towards the revealed Staryu, stealing the last of its camoflauge.

((Apparently Staryu changed tiers while we were gone, you've got an extra 6,000 characters for the MCR. Sorry 'bout that.))

Domonic looked around the lake, wondering where the Staryu had hidden itself. Magik was wondering the same thing, evidently. Neither of us could find it, the Staryu had hidden itself too well. I looked over to my Gliscor he gave what could almost be a shrug. The two of us looked over to Magik and his Starmie, wondering what they'd do next.

"Starmie," Magik said. "I can't see anything... Try lighting up the water with Flash Cannon!"

A clever move. If it worked, the wild Staryu's position would be revealed! Starmie made good on its trainer's order and began to charge up a blinding ball of light and energy. The Starmie's gem-like core began to pulse rhythmically, casting flickering shadows behind us and everything else in the area. I averted my eyes from the display, discovering that it had left a white-ish impression in my eyes. I blinked a couple times to clear my vision, and noticed that the Starmie's Flash Cannon was the brightest source of light around, even brighter than the beating sun!

I looked out to the water and saw what Magik had intended, just in time. It had worked. We weren't the only things that was causing the light to cast shadows. The wild Staryu was casting its own, star-shaped shadow just below the surface of the water.

"There!" Magik shouted, sounding very excited. He was pointing at the nondescript patch of water, where the Staryu had been hiding. "The Staryu's shadow!"

Starmie then launched the Flash Cannon attack. With a bang and a flash brighter than a magnesium flare, the ball of energy shot out with the speed of a cannonball, splashing into the water and hitting the Staryu. There was the tinkling sound that Staryu make, probably in annoyance. However, it didn't seem that the attack had done very much damage. What it did do was remove the Staryu's camouflage. It bobbed around a bit, just below the surface of the water. Almost as if it was planning something.

Suddenly, I heard a thud and a yelp from behind me.

    "Gli!" shouted my Gliscor.

I whipped around to see what had happened to my partner Pokemon. He had been slammed into the ground, as if by an unseen force. It would've been comical, considering how startled he was, but I was having trouble moving. I raised my arm, as a kind of test. It took a large amount of effort, but I managed it. When I let go of the force in my arm, it snapped to my side. Something was up.

I looked over to Magik. His Starmie also appeared to be having trouble staying off the ground. However, the Staryu in the lake seemed to be doing just fine. It was spinning around, happy as can be. It appeared to be gathering static electricity, as well as its own residual energy, preparing for a strike. Interesting.

"Magik!' I called out slowly because my jaw was having trouble working. "The Staryu used Gravity! We're at a big disadvantage here!"

My Gliscor let out a small moan. He really didn't like being grounded. I was also having trouble with the new, increased effects of Gravity. I felt vulnerable, as if I could be caught off guard at any moment. I wondered what Magik was going to do. I moved my head, painfully slowly, to watch the battle. This would be very interesting indeed.

"I can't... Move..." Magik says through his teeth, struggling to remain upright. "There's too much... Gravity..."

Starmie seems to be having troubles as well, its psychic powers keeping it moving but only barely. The many-armed sea star Pokémon lets out a strained tinkle and starts preparing another Thunderbolt attack...

"No, Starmie!" Magik shouts suddenly, waving his arms at his Pokémon. "Don't fight the gravity, dive down and hide from the Staryu's attack!" His wild gesticulations cause him to overbalance, and he falls hard to the walkway. With typical youthful resilience, though, the boy seems unharmed; he pulls himself to his hands and knees to watch the action with an intense stare.

Starmie hears its Trainer's command, and promptly goes spinning deep into the waters of the lake, the enhanced gravitational acceleration causing it to be far out of sight in mere seconds. The dive manoeuvre takes it out of range of Staryu's attack; the electrical nature of the wild Pokémon's attack means that it has to release the energies it's building or have them backfire.

Magik lets out a squeak of surprise as his Salamence, muscles straining in the powerful gravitational pull, shifts her immense bulk to crouch beside her Trainer and places a wing protectively over him. A moment's thought tells him why: with the Staryu about to let off an attack, and Starmie nowhere to be seen, there are exactly four remaining targets. The boy covers his head and curls up next to his Pokémon, bracing himself.

"I can't... Move..." Magik said, gritting his teeth. "There's too much... Gravity..."

At least I wasn't the only one affected by the intensified gravity. The kid Magik seemed to be taking it fairly hard, though. So was his Starmie, for that matter. The sea-star Pokemon's gem-like core began to glow with static electricity. It was preparing its own attack, despite the gravity!

"No, Starmie!" Magik shouted, interrupting his Pokemon's attack. "Don't fight the gravity, dive down and hide from the Staryu's attack!"

Magik's frantic waving accomplished two things. The first was positive. He had caught his Starmie's attention, saving him from a whole lot of trouble. The second was not quite so positive. He lost his balance, collapsing to the ground. He seemed fine, just a bit shaken. He was struggling to get up, but only managed to raise his head to view the battle. He gritted his teeth as he watched his Starmie carry out its orders.

Starmie let the static energy it had already gathered soak back into the ground, then, using all of its Psychic strength, launched itself into the air above the lake. The little Staryu looked up in wonder, still charging its massive Electric attack, as the much bigger sea star dove straight down into the water. In this case, the extra gravity aided the Starmie, causing it to plunge into the lake extremely fast. It was gone beneath the calm, rippling waves in seconds flat.

The Staryu was astounded by its foe's clever moves. Now, it had to release its charged attack or risk it backfiring. Magik's Salamence realizing this at the same time the smaller sea star Pokemon did, lunged at Magik. After a muffled yelp, it became obvious to Magik, too. There were only a few targets for the massive electrical attack. And we were all on the beach.

With Magik safely covered by the Salamence's broad wings, I started to worry about myself. I gave a quick glance to my Gliscor. He gave me a withering look, a sort of "There's no chance of me doing that." It was mostly true. Gliscor wasn't used to all this weight that had been pinned onto him by the Gravity. He had been airborne when the attack hit, so he was pinned down on his front, almost completely immobile. I gave what would be a shrug in normal gravity and slowly moved myself into the standard lightning position that they teach people in the Wilderness Survival class (a required course for Rangers). I was confident that it would work, because I knew the mechanics of electricity. As long as I didn't create a closed circuit, I was fine.

Suddenly, there was a crackle, followed by a loud, rumbling boom, the smell of ozone and a brief, searing heat. I looked around as quickly as I could, considering the intensified gravity. None of us had been hit by the Thunder attack. What had been?

Confused, I looked closer at where the Staryu had launched its attack from. I couldn't see the Staryu or the Starmie, but what I did see rather astonished me. The Thunder attack had created a series of waves, rippling out from where the attack had been launched. Electric sparks danced between them before fading out and flowing into the ground.

"Clever girl," I muttered half to myself.

My Gliscor gave me a strange look. I gave it a "You know what I mean" glare.

"The Staryu zapped the water with the Thunder attack!" I called out to Magik slowly. "That'll have dealt damage to both Pokemon!"

I still couldn't see either of them, but I knew that they were down there. Now's when Magik's link with his Psychic Pokemon would really come in handy...

~~With regards to the RP above from almost five years ago, wherein the nickname Magik is used instead of the given name Sarren, and the Trainer character is very young instead of 7 years older than in the storyline which has him as its protagonist: mistakes were made, and let us never speak of this again.~~

The young man of sixteen, who was named Sarren, closed his eyes and listened; but he wasn't listening with his ears. Instead, in the way he had learned over the years since the events of his youth, he opened his mind to the strange vibrations that his Starmie could sometimes give off. Sarren himself had no psychic talent— though he dearly wished he was one of those rare few who did— but his Pokémon's powers allowed it to transmit information to a properly receptive mind, and he had been taught how to enter just such a state.

As the world fell away and Sarren focused on simply being rather than doing, a tenuous link was established by his Pokémon's odd psyche as Starmie reached out to touch its Trainer's mind.

...!, came the first transmission from Starmie, deep underneath the water. Then, like a light blinking on and off in Sarren's head, the clever Pokémon began to transmit a simple message in morse code. In fact, it was a status report followed by a list...

    -.. --- .-- -. -... . .-.. --- .--
    DOWNBELOW
    .-- . .-.. .-.. .... .. -.. -.. . -.
    WELLHIDDEN
    .--. .-. . .--. .- .-. .. -. --. - --- -.-. --- -- .--. .-.. . - . -.. .. ...- . -- .- -. . ..- ...- . .-.
    PREPARINGTOCOMPLETEDIVEMANEUVER

    -. --- -.. .-- .... .. -.-. ....
    NODWHICH
    ... .-- .. ..-. -
    SWIFT
    - .... ..- -. -.. . .-. -... --- .-.. -
    THUNDERBOLT
    .... .. -.. -.. . -. .--. --- .-- . .-.
    HIDDENPOWER
    .. -.-. . -... . .- --
    ICEBEAM
    ... .. --. -. .- .-.. -... . .- --
    SIGNALBEAM
    .--. .-. --- - . -.-. -
    PROTECT
    - --- -..- .. -.-.
    TOXIC

Sarren abruptly nodded after this last suggestion, an action which, due to its association with "yes" in the young man's own mind, transmitted as a solid affirmative. Starmie immediately cut off its listing of the techniques that it had learned in its time with Sarren, moves it had learned either via its own innate talents, or— in most of these cases— by dint of Sarren's diligent study and then teaching. (Some laymen, before becoming Trainers, believed that the learning aids known as Technical Machines were simply something that "slotted into" a Pokemon, or some absurd notion like that: in fact, TM's were essentially compact discs that fit into a Pokégear or PC's disc drives and displayed a how-to that would teach a Trainer to tutor a Pokémon in a move's use.)

Starmie had spent all this time sneaking into place amidst the murky water, and cloaking its psychic presence from the Staryu. So it would be with the element of surprise on its side that Starmie would unleash the combo attack it had been preparing! Sarren opened his eyes just in time to watch the water of the lake burst suddenly into turmoil as something happened below the surface.

Down below, hidden from the sight of the Trainers on the surface, Sarren's Starmie emerged from the depths below Staryu, racing upwards to complete the Dive maneuver it had been using to hide its location. But instead of slamming directly into Staryu, Starmie— its alien intelligence intuiting a way to make its Trainer's wishes come true— took another option. Rather than seeking to damage the already battered Staryu, Starmie reduced its own momentum to drag a surge of water up from the depths along with it, like an upward-rushing Waterfall in complete defiance of the continuing Gravity! The torrent of water would seek to seize and drag Staryu and Starmie alike up through the surface of the water and send them flying into the air, where Starmie's superior powers of flight would give it the advantage. Despite the fact that it was fighting against powerful Gravity, the water would not be denied: its force fuelled by Starmie's incredible psychic powers, it would fountain up with the unbridled power of two of Starmie's strongest moves behind it: again, not aimed at injuring Staryu but instead intended to send the wild Pokémon sky-high where it would be vulnerable to attack or capture.

This wasn't the extent of Starmie's combination attack, though. While it had been diving, Starmie had found a patch of oozing sludge on the bottom of the lake, no doubt left there as part of a now-abandoned nesting site by a breeding pair of Toxicroak or other poison-type Pokémon native to the Great Lakes. This torrent of water was dredged up from that patch of clinging poison, washing over it and ripping it away from the lake bottom. Now that sludge of pure toxicity was streaming up from the lakebed amidst the rest of the Dive/Waterfall combination attack, manipulated by Starmie's psychic powers so that it was headed straight for Staryu. If it should strike Starmie's unfortunate opponent, the Toxic sludge would cling to its limbs and begin to numb and injure the wild Pokémon.

It's not too urgent. The storm still brews in the distance, churning on the horizon, but already the wind has already made the waves on the Lake become a bit choppy and the dark clouds have slowly crept up to perch on the horizon.

Verdant creature sails easily over the fence, red hooves ripping up dirt and grass as the Gogoat gallops at full speed across the Park and toward the Great Lake. Leaves rustle in the wind that rips through her streaking form. Upon the creature's back is a tiny old woman with a towering hiker's pack. Knobby digits clutch the leaves of her steed's mane as she rides bareback across the Park.

She feels the static in the air and that's how she knows that they're near. The flash of Thunder through the water comes next, a beacon pointing them out in the dimming environment. As she approaches, though, she notices something... peculiar. The waves are less choppy in that wide area, more calm. The edge of the water barely moves. They step into that spot and immediately, her Pokemon gives out a small keen and has to catch herself to keep from falling. Babbs feels the weight of the gravity, too--it presses her face into Nana's foliage.

The woman perseveres, however, and slowly withdraws her leg from the other side of the Gogoat. The ground sucks her down, eager to reclaim her, and her combat boots, hidden beneath her kimono, sink an inch or two into the sand. She sturdily roots her cane into the ground and leans on it to keep herself from being bowled over. Nana backs up apprehensively, out of the zone. The ancient Ranger begins her gradual shuffle forward to the Trainer and other Park staff, keeping an eye on the Staryu it seemed they were battling, searching for the Trainer's other Pokemon.

Suddenly, a great torrent of water and sludge surges up beneath the Staryu and she sees the dark purple form of a Starmie guiding the column of liquid as it carries them up above the surface. The Staryu's light blinks rapidly in a panic as the Toxic coats it body and sinks into its pores, feeling suddenly very, very ill. Having been at the head of the cascade, star body turns to face it's adversary and it panic-blasts a Hydro Pump from its core at its opponent.

The water cannon erupts from the creature and sends the Starmie flying back out into the ocean. However, like the kick of a gun, the powerful move rockets the smaller star straight onto the shore right next to Sarren. The sickly wild Pokemon's light flashes slowly on and off. Whereas it'd been able to move through the water even with the gravity, now, on the earth, it simply cannot budge and remains lodged, helpless, in the sand.

Babbs makes it to the Ranger, then. "There's a storm comin', Alpha, a bad one, and we're evac'ing the park," she croaks to him. "Go ahead, I've got enough ridin' Pokemon to get us out." The man hesitates, but then he nods and takes his leave. The cane-bearing woman shuffles a bit closer to the Trainer but does not fully approach, waiting for him to wrap up the encounter before interrupting him.

Salamence clapped her wing over Sarren again as Staryu rocketed past overhead and to one side; it'd likely have missed him even if she hadn't, but the dragon wasn't taking any chances! Sarren tapped on the inside of her wing, though, asking to be let out, and after a moment's pause Salamence begrudgingly raised the red fold to release him. Rather than call out any further moves, or throw a Park Ball, Sarren seemed to be considering his options.

Supported by the continuing fountain of water from the depths of the Lake, Starmie took a brief breather to observe its Trainer's next move: it was well aware of Sarren's idiosyncracies and, though it didn't understand them, it was a loyal ally and would support him in just about anything he did.

Sarren's memories flashed back to another Staryu, one he'd... uhh... "caught," years and years ago: the one that had become his partner Starmie. He had never battled against his own Staryu: in fact, he and his partner Riolu had fought alongside the wild Pokémon against a Garchomp gone out of control, and it had followed him around for a while before officially joining his team. This was a different situation, but the memories of his own Staryu's bravery and willingness to help were enough to cause him to hesitate to throw the Park-approved Super Ball he was drawing out from a side pouch of his pack.

Sarren had captured wild Pokémon before, when they were impressed by his team's prowess and wanted to join him, but he'd never thrown a Poké Ball at one that he intended to just trade away. Was he going to just chuck the ball at this Staryu, then hand it off to somebody else and let the Pokémon deal with being trained by a stranger? It rubbed him the wrong way. So, instead of letting the Ball fly, Sarren crawled forward though the heavy gravity, carefully approaching the injured and ailing Staryu and stopping a few arms' lengths away.

"Hey... Sorry it's been such a harsh battle," the sixteen-year-old said ruefully, not certain if the wild Pokémon even understood him. "Starmie and the rest of us, we've been through a lot, and it's made us strong. I wanna know... would you like to have a Trainer of your own? Someone who'll help you get as strong as my friend Starmie? You've just gotta tap your arm against this Super Ball here..."

Straining to lift his arm against the heavy gravity, Sarren reached out with the hand holding the Super Ball, ready to push it forward to contact Staryu if the starfish Pokémon should move toward the capsule. It was perhaps dangerous to wait even a few seconds rather than just throwing the ball; he wasn't sure how long Staryu could hold out and stay conscious given its injuries... but that was a gamble he was willing to take. He needed to give Staryu the choice: there was a right way to do these things, dangit!

The incredibly weak Staryu's arms quiver against the sand as it fights against the pain of both its paralysis and it's toxic. It's gem blinks with frenzied panic as the intelligent creature realizes that it's out of it's element and helpless. There's no guarantee that it'll be returned to the water once it faints--it fears that it'll never wake again if it goes under now. So it fights, endures, struggles to stay awake. Crimson light blinks a little more quickly as the Trainer approaches on all fours. It nearly tries to summon another Hydro Pump to defend itself but it cannot manage to move a single muscle more.

As the human speaks, its blinking ceases, as if the tan starfish holds its breath with anticipation. A ball is held out to it and it recognizes it as... a prison? A sanctuary? In the Park, many had disappeared into those small orbs, never to be seen again. Whether it was some sort of heaven or hell had always been a mystery. However, after watching the way its adversary had battled, the Staryu isn't sure if it can entertain the option of hell when it's opponent had seemed so eager, so powerful.

Either way, it can feel the toxic sludge eating at its carapace. Heaven or hell, this would be the only guaranteed way it'd see another day, so the Staryu ever-so-weakly manages to raise it's arm. The orb bumps the creature and absorbs it in a wash of crimson. It does not shake--only clicks once it hits the ground.

The intense gravity returns to normal. The waves rush in instantly to soak Sarren's feet, the force causing the ball to wobble.

Babbs watches with a look of approval written on her features. Old woman shuffles up behind him, her Gogoat following now that the strange, leaden field was gone. "That was a good thing you did," she croaks contentedly. A pause. "Let's go, kiddo Storm's comin'." Nana bows beside him, and they depart.
