    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

It was hot. Ivy was starting to doubt her choice of wardrobe. While the black cargos and turtleneck she wore helped guard her out on runs, they were sun suckers. She did not need more sun right now. The long red vest was also useful for storing things, but it had gotten heavy on her, so it was slung over one of the power washers near the door. Not exactly dressed for the heat.

Then again, she thought, as she moved another heavy box to the other side of the room, she had expected to be in her office working on paperwork today. Instead, she was out in another one of the Park's storage sheds, rearranging all the boxes and equipment inside. She was almost done with this one.

She admired her work for a second, taking a breather from all the lifting and the heat she endured. The boxes were stacked neatly along the walls, and the utility shelf with various tools attached was now visible. There was even a walking space so they could get to stuff. One by one she was cleaning them all out and rearranging. Some days it beat the boredom. She wasn't sure about the heat though. She brushed

A tune from her phone caught her attention then, the ringing playing “Friday”. She rolled her eyes and knew Buzzer had gotten a hold on her phone when she wasn't looking.

    “Ivy,” she answered.

“Oh, hi,” a secretary's voice answered. If she remembered correctly, it sounded like Ashley here at Outpost Four. “A run came through to go up the mountain and neither Joe, Jack, or Elisa are answering. Leo just smiled at me and ran off, and Chainy's a little behind on paperwork. Buzz seems to never be around when I want him to do something. Are you available to take him?”

Ivy laughed. That sounded about right.

“Sure, I'll be right over.” Ivy ended the call and shut up the shed, deciding she would just come back later. She was sure there was going to be other days when she didn't have anything to do.

She put her vest back on and brushed her long, red hair out of the hood. She wanted to put it up, but all the ponytail bands she had were either too small so they couldn't go around all her wavy hair more than once, or they were too wide and the hair fell out. She just suffered because she didn't want to fight with it. With the breeze it wasn't too bad anyway.

Haji, her Espeon got up from his spot on a rock next to the shed as she exited, stretching throughly from all the sun he soaked up. It was one of his favorite things to do. She just shook her head as he followed her to the Outpost. She gathered the file and gave it a long look, seeing that a Tony Banks was venturing up the mountain with her today. She was glad to see this wasn't his first time at the Park since repeat visitors were always appreciated, though it had been a long time since he had been here.

Gear gathered, she went to sit outside on the bench to wait for her Trainer. Haji curled up on the bench next to her, quiet as usual. She wasn't completely thrilled about going up Deckbi again, seeing how she had done it fifty million times already, but it beat cleaning. She was in the mood for a little battle-watching.

I felt a sharp pain upon my right cheek. I awakened with a start. My eyes still adjusting to the light beaming into my room through my window, I gazed around my bedroom, collecting my thoughts. My eyes fixated on a black, box like item with red digits coming forth from it - my alarm clock.

"12:45!" I gasped. I was going to be late!

I was thankful that Infernape had punched me in the face this morning, usually, his playfulness cost me valuable sleep time on a school day, but today, he was saving me from being late. I rushed into my closet, already deciding in my mind what I was going to wear. I grabbed my plan white shirt, my khaki colored cargo shorts, and carefully lifted my prized shoes from the top of my closet and placed them on the ground. It was going to be hot today.

I opened the top drawer on my dresser. This contained underwear, socks, and my Pokeballs. I carefully debated on who to bring with me on my excursion to Mt. Deckbi. Swampert was on obvious choice. His typing would allow him to stand up to the Fire-type and Ground-type Pokemon in Mt. Deckbi with ease. Infernape was not going to allow me to go anywhere without him, so I grabbed his vacant Pokeball just in case something happened to him along the way. Togekiss would be useful, and for some strange reason, I always felt a bit happier when I had the little guy tagging along. My final choice was Sceptile. Though he would not see much action on this excursion, he would be useful back up when dealing with Ground-type Pokemon. Having gather my squad, I placed each Pokeball along my belt and hurried out of my room.

"Mom, I told you I had to go to the Mountain today, I'll see you later," I called. "Infernape, hurry up, we gotta go!"

Infernape rushed to my side and was met with a red beam of light, enveloping him and returning him to his Pokeball.

As I closed the door, the feeling that I was forgetting something kept bothering me. I felt my pockets. Cell phone, check. My backpack was tightened, closed and on my back. Check. I patted my head. My hat! I had forgotten my hat!

I rushed back inside of the house and dashed to my room. I tore though the piles of clothes on the floor, hoping to find the grey snap back hat. After searching three such piles of clothes, I deduced that I hadn't left my hat along my floor. I thoroughly scanned my room, looking for something, anything, that resembled my hat. My eyes were drawn to my doorknob, where a grey hat with "Cerulean Comets" written on it in blue font was hanging. I grabbed my hat and scurried out of the door.

"Togekiss! We have to go," I said aloud, reaching along my belt and grabbing the capsule that belonged to Togekiss. I threw it into the air and watched as the capsule opened and revealed Togekiss, shining in the midday sun.

"We don't have time to Fly to Deckbi, Togekiss. I'm gonna have to trust you here," I said, staring the eager Pokemon in its eyes.

"Toge! Toge!" It was obviously excited, and knew what was coming next.

Whenever I was running particularly late, I had to hold on to Togekiss and let it use Extremespeed. However, when Togekiss was younger, some disastrous results stemmed from this. One time in particular, when ordering Togekiss to use Extremespeed to my school, I ended up in the Saffron City pool. Sometimes Togekiss wasn't a good listener.

"Togekiss, use Extremespeed to the base of Mt. Deckbi!" I called. I held on to Togekiss tightly as it prepared itself. I was hoping, praying that I would not end up at the strip club...again.

I closed my eyes tightly, and within seconds I felt rapid motion. This motion was so rapid, however, that somehow, everything on me remained perfectly intact. I heard the sounds of horns blaring, of children yelling, and Pidgey calling to eachother in the forest. After a span of about 35 seconds, it started to get hot, really hot. I smelled the scent of something burning. Oh lord, I hope Togekiss didn't take me to my Aunt's house.

Togekiss came to a stop, and I opened my eyes.

"Please tell me this is the way to Mt. Deckbi!" I called out, not really taking the time to look and see if anyone was near me.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Haji perked his ears and sat up suddenly, causing Ivy to pay attention. Through their link, she felt the shift in energy like he did. Then, there was a flash, and a white bird Pokémon with red and blue tipped ears and the same color triangles on its stomach. A boy with a plain white shirt and khaki cargo shorts was perched on top of the Pokémon with closed eyes.

Please tell me this is the way to Mount Deckbi!” he cried as he opened them.

Ivy laughed. “If you were any closer, it'd bite you,” she called, catching his attention. She got up and started walking over to him. “I'm Ivy, and if you're Tony, I'm your Ranger. Welcome to Deckbi,” she said as she motioned toward the mountain gate.

A light breeze had kicked up to battle the heat, so she thought as long as that kept up, she'd be okay. She let him settle for a bit before she motioned for him to follow her up to the gate. She let him through and then shut the gate tight to avoid and escapees from inhabiting the Outpost while she was gone. Then they began the hike up the path.

It hadn't changed much since the last time she was here, which hadn't been that long ago. There was still bits of dust that kicked up with the breeze, and there were even more rocks and larger boulders lining the path than last time. Someone must've made more by battling. The way spiraled upward a little, making a light incline that had other stones placed as stairs. She didn't remember seeing that before, and she wondered if some wild Pokémon were landscaping or if something was going on with the mountain. She hoped it wasn't anything to do with the volcano if that was the case.

A nosie up ahead spurred her onward, a breathing sound followed by some crunches and then a tap. Haji moved ahead of her, something he tended to do when he thought he could protect her from something. As usual, he didn't say anything through their link, and she didn't ask him about it, figuring he knew what he was doing. They reached the top of the stone staircase to a platform, and Ivy stopped to stare at the Pokémon working there.

It was a deep red color, with bushy red and yellow eyebrows and a grin on its face. The ape-like Darmanitan was hard at work, moving rocks around. She watched as it picked up a boulder bigger than itself easily and carry it over to the sidelines. It looked like it was moving all the rocks to the side, sort of like a ring. There were only a few rocks in the center of the space, but the border of the ledge was lined with stones of all different sizes.

Ivy moved up onto the platform so Tony could take a look at what was going on, catching the monkey's attention in the process. When the Trainer was all set, she asked, “Here's a Darmanitan. I hear they're really strong. Want to take a shot at it?”

"Oh, I would love to," I uttered as I gazed down the platform at the red, ape like Pokemon that was staring back at me. It must have been the Pokemon responsible for the "remodeling" of the area. I assessed it in my mind. Darmanitan are hard working Pokemon, and one would no doubt be a good fixture on my team. I tried not to make any sudden movements, I heard that Darmanitan could be quite aggressive when provoked, as well.

"Sceptile, looks like you're up," I said, reaching to my belt, and feeling for the Pokeball with SCEPTILE engraved in it. Once I had the ball firmly in my grasp, I pressed the middle button on the capsule, and aimed it at the ground right next to me. Sceptile emerged, looking high-spirited as it normally is.

    "Scept! Sceptile!"

"Sceptile, I know you're at a disadvantage here. But that doesn't matter, I believe in you!" I exclaimed, looking directly into Sceptile's eyes. I know that Sceptile was perhaps one of my strongest Pokemon, however, it needed to know that someone believed in it from time-to-time, especially when the odds were not in its favor.

"You see those rocks that Darmanitan has been using, Sceptile? I want you to use Rock Tomb to use those boulders to pin Darmanitan down. Use Quick Attack to get down there to where Darmanitan is, and to do a little damage as well. Finally, I want you to look especially intimidating when you use False Swipe. I want you to frighten the Darmanitan, and then emphasize the fact that you do not truly want to hurt it, and want to be its friend. Be gentle and polite, now. I know you can do it Sceptile!"

    "Sceptile!"

Sceptile's eyes lit up, and I could sense that it was truly motivated to make me happy, and also to gain a new friend. It stared at the rocks that Darmanitan had placed, and eventually they began to levitate. Darmanitan's eyes were fixated on me the whole time, and I knew that I wish in a great situation. When the rocks had reached an appropriate height, Sceptile moved its eyes from the rocks to Darmanitan. In an instant, the rocks, some large and some small, raced toward the red ape, kicking up a veil of dust around it. I could hear signs of struggling. When the dust had finally settled I saw Darmanitan pinned to the ground, with its arms and legs spread apart, and under boulders.

"Great job Scept-," I looked over to encourage Sceptile, but when I turned my head, Sceptile was no longer there. I saw a flash of green headed in the direction of the entrapped Darmanitan, Sceptile was doing as it was told.

"Darman--oof!" Sceptile made contact with Darmanitan as it was struggling to get free.

Sceptile collected itself and stood over Darmanitan. It raised its arm high into the air, making sure that the blade on its wrist was clearly visible to Darmanitan. From my perch on the platform, I could see that Darmanitan was staring at Sceptile. Sceptile held its arm suspended in the air for several moments before letting it drop down at a high speed, headed straight towards the frightened ape. When the blade was centimeters from Darmanitan's face, Sceptile its arm away.

"There we go Sceptile!" I cheered. Sceptile had been asked to go up against a Pokemon that held a type advantage against it, and it had done just what I asked of it. There are times when a trainer feels especially proud of his Pokemon. This, was one of those moments.

(OOC: Careful, Trainers aren't actually allowed to say if their attacks hit or not. The same thing is true for a ball hitting a mon. You haven't been to the Park in a while so it's okay, but just be wary.

On a more cheerful note, your posts are very good. Which gender would you like for Darmanitan?)

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“Oh, I would love to,” Tony uttered as he stared at the Darmanitan. The ape just stared right back, and Ivy swore she could see the fire behind its eyes for a good fight.

She heard Darmanitan were fierce fighters that were able to hit hard and fast. She also thought they had access to a wide variety of moves, so that should make this battle really interesting. Tony looked like he knew what he was doing, so she'd just have to wait and see how everything turned out.

The Trainer didn't take too long to decide which Pokémon to use, calling out his Sceptile to fight. She called out happily, ready to fight. Ivy wondered about his choice, but she supposed she had fought with a type disadvantage before too.

Tony then commanded a combination attack consisting of Rock Tomb, Quick Attack, and False Swipe. Sceptile looked eager to please. She was sure the Pokémon would give it her best shot for the Trainer, even though the combination wasn't too simple. It looked like they were pretty close, and sometimes that changed everything.

Sceptile charged with energy, and the first part of their plan went into motion. The rocks that Darmanitan had been moving trembled. They then lifted into the air one by one and sailed toward the monkey, kicking up dirt and dust as they struck the ground. It created a curtain that shielded the wild Pokémon from sight. It made a strangled cry, and then there was silence.

The dust settled eventually as they all watched, and it showed the Darmanitan surrounded with a ring of rocks, much like the one he was making, only smaller. One of its arms was pinned by a boulder, and it was kicking with its legs to get free. The rock was pretty large though, so it wasn't making a lot of progress quite yet, despite how strong it was.

Then, Sceptile was gone in a flash. The Darmanitan cried out, but the Grass type's impact cut it off with a whoosh of breath. Then, she finished up the last part of her combo, going in to slice at the ape only to pull away at the last second, as if saying 'psych!'.

The Darmanitan didn't like this though, and Ivy thought it a bit rash, but with a burst of strength, the monkey shattered the boulder and launched itself at Sceptile, reaching out with its teeth with fire in its mouth. It latched onto Sceptile's shoulder, and she let out a cry as she tried to shake it off her arm. The monkey then began to thrash about, and the force knocked Sceptile back several feet.

“Careful!” Ivy called. “They can be really dangerous while on a rampage.”

Sceptile didn't look too hurt, but if Tony wasn't careful, she could end up that way. She was sure the Trainer had it under control though. Through their mind link, Haji agreed, so she figured they both couldn't be wrong.

(OOC: I'd like Darmanitan to be Male, please. Sorry about that, I'll try not to do it again.)

Sceptile had performed the combo of Rock Tomb, Quick Attack, and False Swipe that I had asked it to do flawlessly. I had no doubt in Sceptile's abilities, and performances like these made me trust my reptilian companion even more.

However, our measure of friendship towards Darmanitan was either misinterpreted as taunting, or just unaccepted. It was easy to tell that this red ape Pokemon was on a rampage because it was lashing out more in emotion than with thought and deliberation. It had freed itself from its rocky prison, and immediately latched on to Sceptile's shoulder, with flames in its mouth. This Darmanitan seemed to act on instinct rather than carefully considering its next move - I knew Sceptile and I had an advantage.

Sceptile had always been a smart Pokemon. Whether it was trying to figure out a way to get into the pantry (we kept our cabinets locked so that the Pokemon couldn't have access to our snacks), or beating an opponent that was much bigger and stronger than she was, Sceptile would find a way to get it done. Even as a Treecko, she was never an offensive powerhouse. When I battled with her, we would win often by outlasting the opposing Pokemon by using brainpower, rather than muscle power. One battle in particular stood out in my mind, and it reminded me of this very situation.

Before Sceptile evolved, it was a casual Grovyle. She was a bit larger, and certainly more clever than she was as a Treecko, much to the dismay of my household. I had decided to train Grovyle in the local forest nearby. There were reports of wild Ursaring, but I figured that Ursaring lived in deep forests, not forests near residential areas. As we ventured deeper and deeper into this forest, I began to lose my bearings. However, Grovyle seemed to be comfortable, leading the way as if she had a specific destination in mind. The cool mist and the sound of a quiet river drifted through the air, entering our ears and tickling our noses. This forest seemed tranquil, and not at all like a spot for training. We pressed onward into the forest that seemed less and less like a collection of trees by a residential neighborhood, and more and more like a thick jungle like you see in the movies.

"Gro," Grovyle stopped and looked around. I figured this wasn't anything though, Grovyle was in her "cool" phase. She wanted to seem like she was in control all of the time, and I had come to accept that this was part of her maturing process.

"Grovyle, what is it?" Though I was positive Grovyle was just trying to be cool, I decided to engage her anyway.

"Gro. Grovyle," she muttered again. She put her hands to her ear, and it appeared as if she was listening for a sound of some sorts. I was somewhat annoyed at Grovyle now, she was obviously trying to scare me.

"Grovyle, come on!" I exclaimed, probably louder than I should have. Grovyle stopped moving completely. I had expected a reaction and what I got surprised me, in fact, it made me scared.

I looked around, to my left, to my right, looking for the source of Grovyle's fear. After scanning the areas to my left and to my right thoroughly, I looked straight ahead, and what did I see? I saw an Ursaring staring right back at me.

Everything that I had watched and read, everything had told me not to make any sudden movements when facing an Ursaring. My instincts told me to run away as fast I could. I turned sharply, and ran hoping that Grovyle would follow my lead. The sound of crunching leaves and discarded tree bark under my feet seemed quiet compared to the sound of a panting, hungry, enraged Ursaring that was giving chase. I glanced back, hoping that Grovyle and I had lost the angry brown bear. However, what I saw was the complete opposite of what I wanted to see. Grovyle was nowhere to be found, and the Ursaring was catching up to me. I turned my head forward again, only to see a lone tree in front of me. It was too late to slow down, and I crashed into the tree and fell to the forest floor with a thud. My heart racing, I turned around to see that Ursaring was almost upon me. This was the end.

Ursaring paused over me, licking its chops. It lifted its heavy, muscular arm into the air with the intention to bring it down upon my head and to deliver a crushing blow that would knock me out. I stared intently at Ursaring, for that was all that I could do. I hoped that there was someway all my loved ones could know how I felt about them, I wished there was some way I could have told them all bye before I departed from the world. In the middle of my thought process, however, I saw a green blur headed in the direction of Ursaring.

In a flash, Ursaring was no longer in front of me. What was in front of me was Grovyle, looking more determined than ever. She was going to do everything in her power to make sure that Ursaring would not harm me.

"Gro, Grovyle!" She exclaimed, and I figured this meant for me to find shelter somewhere. Behind the tree was a clearing, and lining that clearing was a ring of bushes and shrubs. I made a dash toward the shrubbery, hoping that the Ursaring would not give chase. Thankfully it didn't.

Grovyle was Ursaring's new target. Grovyle had attacking Ursaring when it was about to make a kill, obviously a sin in the predator world. Ursaring rose off of the forest floor and onto its feet. It let out a roar so loud, I was positive that people on the outskirts of town could have heard it. I glanced over at Grovyle. It was staring at Ursaring, who soon met her eyes. They both charged at each other.

    Boooooom!

The sound of Ursaring's first making contact with Grovyle's chest boomed like thunder. Grovyle was still determined to fight. It got back to its feet and charged at Grovyle again.

    Booooom!

Another blow, this time to Grovyle's shoulder. She let out a cry of pain, but staggered to her feet again. She charged blindly at the now confident brown bear.

    Booooooooooom!

This time, the blow was to the bottom of Grovyle's chin. This seemed to be the most thunderous impact of all. Grovyle fell to the cold forest floor with a thud. It closed its eyes for a brief second. Ursaring was satisfied. It did not get to kill, but for some reason beating up Grovyle seemed to compensate. It began to walk away, panting and trying to catch its breath. Dealing blows such as that must have taken a lot of energy. Grovyle crawled over to the lone, tall tree standing in the middle of the clearing. It grasped onto the bark and used it to pull itself up. It leaned on the tree.

"Gro! Gro Gro Gro Grovyle! Gro Gro, Grovyle!" It called after the Ursaring who was almost out of visibility range.

The Ursaring came to a complete stop. I assumed that Grovyle had called Ursaring a coward or something of the like. She was trying to be cool again. I should have scolded her. I should have made her get back into her Pokeball, and try to get out of the forest. I was too immobilized by fear to even talk.

Ursaring turned around and stared at Grovyle, who was gasping and leaning against the tree. It began to kick its feet on the ground, and I instantly knew what it was going to do. It was going to charge and fling itself into Grovyle. The impact of its bodyweight would certainly be enough to make Grovyle faint, or even worse, to kill it.

It took off, running faster than I had even seen an Ursaring run on Pokemon Planet. Grovyle was still on the tree, her eyes locked on the charging Ursaring. When Ursaring was inches away, Grovyle darted off into the bushes. It was too late for Ursaring to react, and it went barreling into the tree.

    CRRRRRACCKKKKKKKK!

The next thing I knew, the Ursaring was sprawled out on the forest floor, and there was a deep indentation on the tree. I ran over to the general area where Grovyle had darted to, feeling more proud of it than ever. I found it laying on the forest floor, banged up, and obviously tired. It glanced at me and smiled.

"Grovyle, t-thank..." I stopped mid sentence. Grovyle began to glow white, and the shape of its body began to elongate. A flash ensued, a flash so bright that I had to cover my eyes. When I brought my arm down, what I saw was a tall, lime green reptile laying where Grovyle was. Grovyle had matured and evolved into Sceptile, and I owed it my life.

Back to the current situation. We were not going to be able to out-muscle a Pokemon like Darmanitan. We would have to think critically.

"Sceptile! Nice job on the last combo, I'm sure you're fine and that Fire Fang didn't hurt one bit! I need you to get back away from Darmanitan and towards those nearby rocks - but remember, don't take your eyes off it!" I commanded. Sceptile did as it was told, and backed up about forty yards from where Darmanitan was standing, and braced itself against the boulders.

"Good! Now I need you to look as attractive as you possibly can, and use Attract! This will get Darmanitan closer to you, and when it does, use Rock Slide!" I ordered.

"Sceptiiiiiiiiiilllllle," Sceptile called to the red ape, winking ever-so-sensually. I awaited Darmanitan's response.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Tony praised his Pokémon for doing such a good job, and the grass lizard looked pleased enough. Then he called, “I need you to back away from Darmanitan and towards those nearby rocks – but remember, don't take your eyes off it!”

The Sceptile nodded and backed up, keeping her eyes peeled on the thrashing monkey. She scooted up snug against the boulders behind her, bracing herself against the rocks, ready to move at a moment's notice. Then Tony called out again.

“Good! Now I need you to look as attractive as you possibly can and use Attract! This will get Darmanitan closer to you, and when it does, use Rock Slide!” he said.

The lizard nodded and called out to the ape, using a sweet, teasing tone that would probably have the desired effect. She didn't doubt her Trainer's plan at all, and Ivy was relieved to see it. They looked like they had been through much together, and it was nice seeing that trust there.

The Darmanitan was still thrashing around, flailing his arms and hitting the rocks next to him. He stopped for a second as he heard the Sceptile's call, jerking his head in that direction. Ivy wasn't sure if he was too affected or not, but the monkey decided he needed to be closer regardless.

He started up his rage again, barreling through the middle of the arena he had been creating. He crashed into one of the rocks he hadn't had a chance to move yet with his right shoulder, cracking the top of and sending it flying into the dirt. Another one he hit with the left side of his body as he ran, and that one crumbled into tiny chips of stone that flew out in arcs. The ground rumbled as he ran, and then he started veering off toward the side of the platform, like he wanted to get at Sceptile from the side.

As Tony instructed, Sceptile held her place until the Darmanitan got closer. Suddenly, he leaped onto the rock ring around the open space, still muttering and moving almost drunkenly. Then she executed her attack.

With a cry, the rocks under him began to tremble, and then they let go of their places completely, sending the ape flailing sideways as he had little choice but to follow the rolling rocks. A massive cloud of dust kicked up as so many stones were moved, and Ivy had to cover her face with her arm as she coughed a bit, straining to see what was going on.

Then a crunching sound, and a red blur came spinning out of the cloud, running smack dab into Sceptile's center and knocking her backward. The rolling Pokémon veered shakily back toward the center of the arena as the dust began to settle, and then Darmanitan unrolled himself.

Ivy saw he wasn't in perfect shape though. He was now panting heavily, seemingly tired from his earlier rampage as well as the damage he took from the falling rocks. There were visible scratches on his skin, like on his massive arms, and one of his fuzzy eyebrows was kinked awkwardly to the side. He still had his eyes on the lizard though, so perhaps the fixation or whatever he had on her hadn't worn off quite yet.

The Ranger waited to see what the Trainer would do next and hoped they wouldn't all crash the ledge down the mountain from all the fighting. In her mind, Haji agreed with her.

I watched eagerly as my tall, green, reptilian companion waited for Darmanitan to make its way closer to it. I knew that without a doubt, Sceptile would come through again when I really needed it to. In the Pokemon Trainer's Handbook, a guide I used when I first started Pokemon training, it recommended that a trainer go through trust exercises with his or her Pokemon to make sure the two have an unfaltering trust for each other. When a trainer and a Pokemon trust each other and are in sync, the results are amazing. However, if the trainer and the Pokemon do not trust each other, and one begins to second guess the other, then the results were disastrous. I made sure that I could trust each and every one of the Pokemon I owned when it really counted, and I also made sure that when it was "do or die" time, that they could trust me as well. In this guide to all things in the Pokemon world, it also stated that Trainer-Pokemon relations could be altered or changed when the Pokemon evolves, meaning if you had a great bond with a Pokemon in its second stage, this could all change when it evolves into its third stage. This is solely based on the manner in which the Pokemon evolves. If the trainer forced the Pokemon to evolve by violent means, then a Pokemon that once sought only to please the trainer could grow to resent it deeply. I knew I wasn't violent with Sceptile, but I still wanted to make sure. You could never be too safe.

It was a bright summer's morning, and I called Sceptile out of its Pokeball. It yawned and stretched for about a minute, before staring at me with casual, happy eyes that assured me that this was the Pokemon that had been with me since it was a Treecko. Still, it couldn't hurt to make sure that it didn't trust me any less after the whole training-in-the-words-oops-its-an-ursaring fiasco.

I walked over the garage, which doubled as a car port and storage place and removed the ladder from its holding place on the right side of the garage wall. I struggled with the large metal ladder, yet I finally made it to the front of my house where I placed the ladder down, and opened it up. I climbed on top of it and stood on the brown roof of my house which was at a slight downward angle. I told Sceptile to stay on the ground. My intentions were to close my eyes and fall off of the roof, hoping that Sceptile would catch me. I had to trust Sceptile, no big deal. We had been through a lot, I was positive the bond was there. However, as I kept looking at the distance between the roof and the ground, and I evaluated how much it would hurt if I hit the ground and Sceptile didn't catch me, I began to grow quite antsy. I knew Sceptile could sense how I felt too. After what seemed like hours of deliberating, I finally forced myself to close my eyes and lean backwards. Besides, I've been shocked by a Jolteon's Thunderbolt attack before, and I was positive that nothing could hurt more.

My feet had left the roof, and I was now in mid-air waiting for gravity to do its job. I half expected to hit the ground with a thud as Sceptile snickered behind me, but what actually happened was a complete surprise to me. I felt myself stop falling. In fact, I felt myself being lifted back onto the roof. The next thing I knew, I was on the roof again, however, this time I was in Sceptile's arms. It didn't even wait until I was close to the ground to try to catch me: it caught me when I was just starting to fall. Sceptile was a true companion.

I could feel the ground shaking as Darmanitan continued in its rage, gradually making its way over to Sceptile who was casually awaiting it. It devastated boulders with mere swings of its arms, and once again I was reminded that I wasn't battling an ordinary Rattata (not even Rattata in the top percentage of Rattata were this strong), and that I was battling a truly dangerous rampaging wild Pokemon. The chips of the destroyed stones flew to the left, to the right, and what seemed to be every direction as the rampaging red ape let go of all common sense and reasoning and continued its thrashing about. I supposed that it was time to show it that Sceptile can hit just as hard.

Sceptile wasn't the strongest offensive Pokemon in the world, but time and time again I was reminded that it had heart. It also had a wide array of moves with different effects that could feign physical strength. One particular instance entered my head about a move that Sceptile performed not too long after it had originally evolved into Sceptile - Swords Dance. It was a move that boosted Sceptile's attacking power to twice its normal level.

I had developed the habit of letting my Pokemon workout with me in the gym located in my basement. My Fighting-type Pokemon usually monopolized the weight sets, but it seemed all the other Pokemon on my team expected it. The target of my attention for the day was the punching bag. It seemed to be the target of Sceptile's attention as well. It watched as I held my hands close to my face and struck the large black bag suspended in the air with all the force I had in me. In between combos I hopped around left to right, anticipating my next move. After ten minutes or so of repeating these motions, I had grown tired. I grabbed my favorite Lemon flavored GatrAde and sat down on the bench near the punching bad, exhausted. Sceptile studied the black bag for a while, moving its head curiously and occasionally striking the bag ever so gently with her fists. And then with her tail. And then with her legs. I figured that this was merely out of curiosity because this was this first time Sceptile had looked at the punching bag. However, my theory was proven wrong when it began to mimic my motions. She hopped around left to right in front of the punching bag holding its fists close to its face. For some reason, she started to flex her muscles and I let out a giggle. This was going to be hilarious. Sceptile pulled back for a punch, and a loud booming sound followed when her fist made contact with the black bag. In the blink of an eye, the punching bag was gone and there was a gigantic hole in my basement wall. Sceptile had used Swords Dance!

Back to the present day. When Darmanitan grew close enough, Sceptile executed its attack. The rocks lifted from their previous spots and all rushed at flew at the unaware Darmanitan, striking him one by one, two by two, and in some cases three by three. Chips off of these rocks flew, and dust rose, shrouding the red ape in a cloud of dust. The battlefield was still. Seconds later, Darmanitan erupted from the pile of rocks and the cloud of dust, striking Sceptile squarely in the chest. Sceptile let out a cry of pain. Sceptile had sustained damage, but Darmanitan was significantly more tired than Sceptile was. I figured that now was the time to hit Darmanitan where it hurts, and show it what exactly we were capable of. I had ordered Sceptile to mostly play the roll of the defender, in an attempt to tired the raging red ape out. Sceptile didn't do as much damage, but it had succeeded in making Darmanitan worn out, visible by its panting and heavy breathing.

"Nice Sceptile! I like the way you pulled that combo off!" I yelled, projecting my voice to the large lizard. "I want you to back away from Darmanitan again, and don't worry about that Rollout, Darmanitan isn't as strong as you are!" I needed to boost Sceptile's confidence.

I knew that I had Sceptile's undivided attention. By showing my support for Sceptile, our link of trust grew even stronger. I needed all the trust I could get from Sceptile, because what I was about to ask of Sceptile was something that I hadn't asked of her many times in the past.

"Sceptile, remember when we were in the gym and you punched the sleeping bag through the wall?" I called.

"Scept, Sceptile!" She called in response.

"I want you to use Swords Dance just like you did in the gym! Make sure you stare at Darmanitan when you do it too, just to get in its head! Its not as smart as you are!" I had issued the first part of my commands to Sceptile. The second part of this set of commands made me a bit unsure, the results could be a tad destructive.

"Hey, Ranger Frost?" I looked over at the ranger, who was staring intently at the battlefield. "Brace yourself," I finished. The battle had already been a bit destructive, and if everything went as planned, the platform we were standing on might even crash to the ground. It was just one of those things we would have to deal with.

"Sceptile, once you feel you're strong enough, I want you to use Earthquake!" I was positive that this would do major damage to the already weakened Darmanitan.

I prepared my Super Ball for use right after the Earthquake hit. I was determined to make Darmanitan a member of my team.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“Nice, Sceptile! I like the way you pulled that combo off!” Tony called, praising his Pokémon. Ivy liked when Trainers did that. In her opinion, that Pokémon then worked harder to please them.

The Trainer then recalled a memory the two had shared together, something about a punching bag. He mentioned Swords Dance to boost her strength, and he make sure to add a part in about taunting the Darmanitan while she did it. It was nice to see them having a bit of fun, though she hoped the ape wouldn't rage too bad. He had seemed a little rash in his actions so far.

Sceptile focused, raising her strength by concentrating on her inner power. The Trainer looked at her and said, “Hey, Ranger Frost? Brace yourself.” He turned back to his partner to give her more instruction, and she saw him pull out a Superball in preparation for throwing. “Sceptile, once you feel you're strong enough, I want you to use Earthquake!” Tony called.

Ivy paled a little bit, bracing her feet as best she could and telling Haji to hang on. The earth began to rumble as Sceptile started to attack. The Darmanitan gave a battle cry from the sight of the Grass type and curled up again, preparing to use another Rollout attack. Ivy knew that each time he gained more momentum for it, it became more powerful.

“The ledge is not natural. It is unstable.” Haji said to her mind, and she knew what was going to happen before she heard the sharp crack.

Lines started to form under her feet rapidly, cracking apart the platform they were standing on. She motioned for Haji to follow her, but he already knew what she was thinking from the mind link. She dashed in Tony's direction, calling, “Call Sceptile back!” The whole ledge rumbled from the force, and the Darmanitan couldn't seem to find his feet. She made it to Tony and managed to snag a piece of his t-shirt before calling to Haji. The Trainer returned Sceptile just as Haji confirmed her request, but in doing so, lost control of the Superball that bounced harmlessly on the ground.

In a flash, they disappeared off the ledge. The rocks crumbled and fell, angling down the mountainside. Darmanitan, not being light, slid down as well, having no purchase to hold himself up. Dust formed, and the massive cloud engulfed the entire place they had been standing.

The group reappeared about twenty feet away, safely on a different path. Ivy breathed heavy, smiling at the purple cat. “Thanks, Haji. Perfect timing.”

They all watched the rubble as the smog settled. Debris was piled in a uneven heap, but the Darmanitan was nowhere in sight. Ivy thought the worst when she suddenly caught a glint of green sitting on top of one of the stone slabs on the right. She went over to it, and a grin caught her face the closer she got.

The Superball was sitting on top, looking undamaged. She picked it up, and sure enough, the center light was glowing, signaling an occupant. She turned back to Tony and waved the ball in the air. “Looks like you got it after all!”

She went back to show him. “I'll have to hang onto it for now.” She placed the ball in her vest pocket and zipped it back up. “That was probably the best catch I've ever seen. Where to next?”

I stood in awe, contemplating what had just happened. Sceptile, a Pokemon that was not normally aggressive had collapsed the whole mountainside with its Earthquake attack. Darmanitan, a Pokemon that is normally aggressive was rendered helpless and swept up in the Earthquake. However, through some stroke of luck, I ended up capturing the Darmanitan when the Super Ball slipped out of my grasp! Needless to say, I was proud of myself and my partner Sceptile.

“That was probably the best catch I've ever seen. Where to next?” Ranger Frost asked as she placed the capsule that housed Darmanitan back into her bag.

"Well...I think we should go inside," I said, fidgeting with my hat that managed to stay on my head this whole time. I was curious to see what Mt. Deckbi was like on the inside, and in addition to that, there was a certain mole Pokemon that I was interested in finding.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Tony sat in awe for a moment, and Ivy couldn't blame him. That was a lot happening in such a short time frame. Truthfully, she was amazed the Darmanitan wasn't injured. Sometimes things just happened though, and she was glad they turned out the way they did.

She suspected the ledge was made by either some staff member or a Pokémon out here. Haji confirmed the same suspicion about the shelf not being natural. She couldn't remember it from her last visit, and she was here quite a bit. Either way, she wasn't going to penalize the Trainer for it since it hadn't affected much. The Park was kinda strict on the no damage policy sometimes. She'd report it to the others just in case, but she'd take the heat from it if there was any.

Eventually, the Trainer answered her question. “Well... I think we should go inside,” he said, indicating the inner mountain. She nodded and began to lead the way. It had been a while since she had actually been through it.

The shelf hadn't fallen on anything important, meaning the path to inside was still free from obstruction. It had caused quite a racket though.

“Something comes,” Haji said, and Ivy listened closely as a clacking sound grew closer.

Then, a flickering flame appeared from behind a distant rock, and a cream-colored horse trotted up to them, looking on curiously. It tossed it's head a few times while watching them, and it seemed to want something. Maybe it was in the mood for a battle.

“Do you have a Ponyta? This one must've been attracted from all the noise that made.”

"A Ponyta, eh? I already have a Rapidash...but the more the merrier, right?" I pondered aloud. I reached down to my leather belt to help assist in my thought process. Who should I choose? I considered. I was saving Infernape for a particularly dangerous situation. Sceptile had just already fought valiantly in battle against Darmanitan. I needed to have Togekiss rested for later situations as well. That left Swampert, a Pokemon whose offensive and defensive capabilities always proved helpful, no matter the situation. I also figured that Swampert's typing proved useful in taking on a Fire-type Pokemon such as Ponyta.

Swampert was a genuinely calm Pokemon. In the most dangerous situations, I could count on Swampert to be completely unworried or completely oblivious. My mother thought that Swampert was a little slow compared to other Swampert because on several occasions, Swampert would seem uninterested or in a world of its own, but Nurse Joy insisted it was just his Relaxed nature. He was never in a rush, and took his time and doing just about everything. It could be annoying, but Swampert did whatever you needed him to do right when you needed it to be done.

I found Swampert when it was just a small Mudkip. Summer was particularly rainy, and I had gone for a walk through a forest path. There were puddles all over, but all of these puddles were empty, being nothing more than eyesores littered all about the once beautiful forest. The most devastated part of the forest was the clearing, in which only two trees stood. The surrounded grass area had turned into a swamp of sorts, with water oozing from the ground whenever you take a step. The forest was also filled to the brim with the sounds of Croagunk and other Pokemon commonly associated with swamps. However unappealing the clearing looked, something drew me into it. Perhaps it was my unwielding sense of adventure.

I walked through the soaked bushes to the clearing, mud splashing around with every step. A bright blue object by the base of one tree attracted me, and as I grew closer its shape became more and more defined. It was a Mudkip! However, it was resting. It inhaled deeply, and then exhaled ever-so-slightly. The exhale was so gentle that it was like a quiet sigh. I didn't have a Mudkip at the time, and since it was already sleep, the work was essentially done for me. Pokemon were much easier to catch when they are sleeping. I reached into my backpack and grabbed a Pokeball. Within seconds, I had thrown the capsule at the resting Pokemon, and within seconds, Mudkip was mine.

"Swampert, go!" I threw the red and white Pokeball into the air. It opened and revealed a large mud fish Pokemon, shimmering in the radiant sun. "Swampert, I know you haven't had any action in a while. Well, here you go!"

Swampert looked at me with wondering eyes, I wasn't sure if it was completely awake.

"Swam-PERT!" It cried out to tell me that I had its attention, as if it could read my mind.

"Swampert, I want you to start off by hitting the Ponyta with a Mud Shot! That'll slow it down a bit for sure. Finish up with a Hydro Pump! It's just a Ponyta, it'll submit soon when we show it how strong you are!" I preached. I was confident in Swampert, it hadn't really let me down before. It's calm approach also helped calm me down in times of urgency, and Swampert always knew exactly when to give it his all. I wasn't too sure how Ponyta would take this, however. Swampert was a strong, fully evolved Pokemon, and Ponyta was only a frail, basic stage Pokemon. Swampert also had the type advantage.

I grabbed my Superball. I decided to keep it in my hand, because I was positive that this battle would be over very soon. There was a slim chance of a basic Pokemon like Ponyta beating a powerhouse Pokemon like Swampert, but then again, I like Pokemon that have heart. Something inside of me was hoping that Ponyta would try its hardest to retaliate.

I waited for Swampert to make its move.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“A Ponyta, eh? I already have a Rapidash... but the more the merrier, right?” he asked aloud.

She wasn't sure if she was meant to answer, but she nodded anyway. She knew of some Trainers that had more than one of a species of Pokémon, either because they just liked them or just in case. If one was injured or perhaps gone to learn something, it was handy to have another, especially if that Trainer was into any sort of competitive battling. She heard some gym leaders liked to have multiples. Besides, if someone else wanted a Ponyta, he might be able to trade.

Tony picked Swampert for this battle. The seemingly slow mud fish was pretty relaxed as he called him out, ready for just about anything. At least that meant he wouldn't be spooked by anything that came at him in the Park.

“Swampert, I want you to start off by hitting the Ponyta with a Mud Shot! That'll slow it down a bit for sure. Finish up with a Hydro Pump!” Tony called. He reassured his Pokémon that since the horse was a basic stage, it would soon submit to them, being a more powerful force.

Part of her wanted to laugh at that, and part of her agreed with him. While Swampert was definitely a force to be reckoned with, Pokémon in the Park could be tricky. Since they grew up in this protected environment that routinely saw Trainers and Rangers coming through, they didn't have that natural people-wariness that other Pokémon in the wild did. Sometimes it made them fearless.

Tony kept a Superball on hand, she noticed, probably thinking this would be quick. With any luck, it would be, since she was sure he wanted to see a little bit more of the mountain. It didn't hurt to catch as many Pokémon as you were able though, if they all interested you. He could only take three with him when he left, but it was nice to have a pool to select from.

The Swampert began his attack, loosening dirt from the ground. He mixed water into it, forming a gloopy ball that looked pretty messy to hold. The stickiness would probably slow the horse down a bit if it got caught onto its legs. Then, with a powerful blast of water, the Swampert shot off his attack. The spray sent the ball flying, trailing streams of mud behind it and sending flecks out to speckle the field.

The Ponyta saw this coming though, and with a burst of fire it charged up to the nearest rock and kicked back from it, using the stone as leverage to switch directions and gain momentum, trying to outrun the attack. The stone collapsed at the impact, sending bits of rock outward. The idea almost worked as the horse tried to speed away, but the ball grazed its left flank, knocking it a little off balance.

It stumbled to the side as the goop traveled down its legs, and it pranced around, trying to get the stuff off. Its circling brought it closer to the Swampert again, and he was charging up his next attack. A gurgle of water alerted the horse to its danger, and with a heavy effort, the Swampert reared his head back and unleashed the attack.

Torrents of water came blasting at the horse from a few feet away, and the Ponyta realized it didn't have time to move. Instead, it called the fire within itself and braced its legs. Fire erupted all around it, seeming like it came from the ground itself, though it was probably all from the horse. The Inferno engulfed the horse, trying to combat the water. It didn't completely work from that close though.

The water hit the fire wall and steam instantly filled the field, hissing and crackling as the two attacks fought each other. Then, the Ponyta cried out and was knocked back by the water. It's attack flared out and ended, the fire trails coming back to hit Swampert. He grumped as the fire sizzled almost uselessly against his skin, since the water-coat gave him a lot of protection.

The horse skidded back to slam into a larger rock as the water quit, sending it falling to the floor. It wasn't done yet though, instead struggling to its feet and calling out a challenge rather than giving up. It was a little wobbly but soon found its battle stance with its head a bit lowered, ready to take whatever the mud fish threw at it next.

The Swampert groaned a little, and Ivy noticed that a couple patches of his skin on his shoulder and arm looked a little singed. Despite being a water type, it looks like he had a little bit of a mild burn. It probably wasn't anything major, but it might make him hesitate a little and not want to move as much because of the stinging.

Ivy hoped Tony wanted a good fight. She thought the Ponyta was willing to give it.

    (OOC: Female.)

There was but a brief delay between me issuing Swampert his orders, and Swampert performing them. He sprayed water onto the ground below and used it to make a sticky mud ball that appeared quite messy. He shot it towards the Ponyta's legs, as it was meant to go. Ponyta, somehow, saw this coming though. It raced towards the nearest rock, leaving a trail of embers behind it. It kicked off the rock, changing its direction and gaining a bit of momentum in the process. The Mud Shot made impact with the baby horse's left leg, and splattered in many directions. The mud dripped down its legs and it wobbled a little bit, which reassured me that the mud was weighing it down.

I heard a gurgling sound, which alerted me that Swampert was preparing to deliver its next attack - Hydro Pump. I was sure that if I heard the gurgling sound, then Ponyta must have heard it too. Hydro Pump was an extremely powerful move, capable of cutting down a fully grown tree. However, it was not entirely accurate. Swampert and I had worked on this.

In order to master this attack, I took Swampert out to the very marsh where I had found him as a Mudkip. The forest returned to its normal serene state after a couple days of sunshine, however, the marsh where I had found Mudkip remained as nasty and swampy as ever. The trees located in the marsh were all falling down and deteriorating. I figured this would make good target practice. I marched over to several trees and placed several colored index cards on them, and then trekked back. Mud was splattering everywhere, much to my annoyance.

"Swampert, I want you to use Hydro Pump. Aim at the tree in the center with the light blue index card!" I ordered. I half expected Swampert to be pinpoint accurate. However, I watched as Swampert hit the tree right next to it, containing a green index card. I wondered if Swampert had trouble with colors, but it quickly regrouped itself and fired at the tree in the middle. However, the stream of torrential water just missed this tree, and hit the tree right next to it, containing the orange index card. I knew that this move was a gamble sometimes.

Swampert's skin was a bit singed. I could tell it was not entirely comfortable. I thought to myself, what could I do to make Swampert feel comfortable? It was brought up in the swamp, a very wet and damp place. We were on Mt. Deckbi, a place that was dry and hot. Then it hit me.

"Hey, Ranger Frost?" I asked. "If you have an umbrella or something, you might want to get it out. Swampert, use Rain Dance!"

Swampert looked up into the sky, and put his hands to the air. While staring constantly at the bright blue sky, he moved his hands in a circular motion while hopping on his left foot, and then his right. He repeated this motion for a short time. The next thing I knew, the sky had grown cloudy, and a certain wet smell made me know what was coming next. A drop of rain hit my on my nose, followed by another on my wrist. Then another drop on the ground. Then another. Then another. The next thing I knew, it was pouring down raining.

"Swampert, I know that you're feeling more comfortable now! I want you to use Hydro Pump again!"

I waited for Swampert to use Hydro Pump again. Ponyta had heart, I respected that.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Tony took a look at Swampert's singed skin and didn't like it. He thought for a little while before his expression changed like he had an idea. Then he turned to her and said, “Hey, Ranger Frost? If you have an umbrella or something, you might want to get it out.” He then turned back to his partner. “Swampert, use Rain Dance!”

Before Ivy could say anything, Haji was already digging under her cloak, pressing against her leg so he'd be covered enough to stay dry. Ivy wanted to laugh at Tony's almost-joke. Who carried an umbrella in Deckbi? She shook her head with a smile, reaching behind her to pull her hood up and over her head just as the first drops began to fall.

She watched the Swampert weave with his hands in the air, hopping on one foot and then to the other while his arms made circles in the air. She liked when Pokémon called to change the weather. Everyone did it just a little bit different, and it was interesting to watch.

One drop after another fell, getting heavier and more close together. Soon it was pelting down, and she couldn't deny that the cold felt good. She'd much rather have it rain than be blistering hot. It was raining in a sheet, and a disgruntled noise from the Ponyta revealed that she didn't like it one bit.

“Swampert, I know that you're feeling more comfortable now! I want you to use Hydro Pump again!”

It was true, she thought. The Swampert wasn't cringing anymore, though she knew the burn probably still hurt a little. The rain would give his attack more kick, and it might even slow the horse down a bit enough to hit. Visibility was a little lower now, so she was going to hope it worked.

Swampert gurgled again, barely audible over the pelting rain, and the Ponyta noticed he was charging up for an attack again. She moved quick, flashing from one side of the field to the other, trying to get a hit in before the large mud fish could. She hit, but the hit just sort of glanced off of the big Water type. He didn't look bothered at all.

More importantly, that put the horse considerably closer, and since Swampert hadn't stopped gathering his attack, he was ready to go with the horse in range. He let go of the blast, hitting the horse flat in the side and pushing it halfway across the field with the water torrent. The horse cried out on impact, and when she landed on the rocky terrain, it took her longer than normal to get up.

She wasn't going to give up like that though, no matter how weak she was. She gathered strength to her legs, and in one swift movement, she bounded up, lost among the sheets of rain. Ivy looked above with her eyes, but the rain was just too thick. She had to resort to sharing Haji's senses, and even then the energy of the rain interfered a bit. Ponyta had to be pretty weak though, so when she landed, maybe she wouldn't do so much damage.

The rain that was coming down felt especially refreshing - I wasn't on Mt.Deckbi for a long time, however I had ground quite tired of its constant heat. Swampert seemed to be at home, and his burn didn't appear to be bothering him anymore, which was a plus. A healthy Swampert was a relaxed one, though I have never seen Swampert get riled up, and he has had a lot of status conditions before.

Ponyta looked uncomfortable in the rain. Part of me felt bad for it, but I knew it was all going to be over soon, it was quite exhausted. Swampert began to gurgle again, and Ponyta reacted to it. It used its remaining strength to charge into Swampert using Quick Attack, however, it didn't affect my mudfish companion, and brought the flaming horse even closer.

Swampert reared his head back and shot forth a torrential stream of water, directly hitting Ponyta on its side and pushing it across the battlefield. I heard it whimper on impact, and it staggered to its feet slowly. I knew it was on its last legs. However, it launched itself high into the air, so high that it seemed to be above the clouds. I knew this Ponyta had heart, and even if I couldn't raise it, I was certain that some trainer out there would be lucky to have a Pokemon like Ponyta.

"Swampert! I want you to pay attention to the sky: Ponyta will be coming down soon. When it gets close, I want you to use Protect. After it bounces off of you - hit it with a Water Gun! Make sure to be extra gentle, we don't want to hurt it too much!"

Protect was an interesting move. Swampert learned Protect when it was just a Marshtomp. Swampert was very careful as a Marshtomp. When walking around the house, and unexpectedly hitting an invisible wall, Marshtomp was to blame for it. Whenever he got scared, he used Protect. Whenever he was upset at you, he used Protect. After being so emotional and high sprung as a Marshtomp, it was only natural he mellowed out upon evolution.

I prepared my Super Ball for impact after Swampert's new set of moves. I figured I'd also let my Pokemon rest afterwards...

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ivy still searched the sky for the fire horse that had disappeared into it. She couldn't stay up there forever, as her elevation depended on how much strength she was able to put into her jump. It was really low visibility though, so she was having no luck. Hopefully Tony was working something out for Swampert to do.

“Swampert!” he called. “I want you to pay attention to the sky: Ponyta will be coming down soon. When it gets close, I want you to use Protect. After it bounces off of you, hit it with a Water Gun! Make sure to be extra gentle, we don't want to hurt it too much!”

The mud fish responded with a nod, tilting his head up to look along with the rest of them. Ivy didn't know if he'd be ready to use Protect in time - a natural shield that blocked incoming attacks. It was probably second nature of him to do so, but the Ponyta was really fast, and it was further driven by the momentum of the fall.

Then, movement, and in a flash of streaming red, the horse came down. She connected with the Swampert's shoulder before the shield went up, but after that, the horse bounced off. She struggled to keep her feet, being thrown off balance by the invisible barrier, but Swampert was on the ball this time, readying his Water Gun.

He didn't go for full strength, but more water drenching her coat was able to knock her down. She could do little else but watch with a serious look on her face as Tony threw his Superball. It bounced off her neck with a wet sloosh and hovered close like they always seemed to do, sucking her up into the device in a beam of red light.

It snapped shut with a soft ping, almost drowned out by the sound of the rain.

“Well, there's number two,” she said, making a motion to go retrieve the now muddy ball. Haji protested a little by way of the bond, and he stubbornly tried to stay under her cloak as she went over to collect Tony's prize. She picked up the ball with little fuss and held it out to the rain to wash some of the mud off. She didn't expect to stay perfect, but she could at least help the inside of her vest stay a little bit clean. “If you want to take a rest,” she said to the Trainer, “now would be a pretty good time. Swampert looks like he could use it.”

Tony agreed and told his Swampert to take a rest, and the mud fish curled up next to a larger rock, fitting his head on top of his arms. Ivy leaned up against a rock herself, and Haji stayed close, just enjoying a little break from all the heat. The rain was refreshing, but she knew it wouldn't last.

At that thought, the rain began to let up as the Swampert drifted off into sleep. The sun peeked back out behind a gray cloud, and soon they dispersed all together. She wasn't looking forward to the humidity that would show up as the wet dried up and the sun started warming up the air again, but she supposed they would be inside the mountain soon enough. The caves would probably be a little cooler. She hoped.

“Well,” she said after a while, “we can either wait until Swampert wakes up to continue on, or you can just recall him for now while we go. It's your call.” The mud fish would need a little more time to recover his wounds, but there was no harm in letting him sleep in his Pokéball if Tony wanted to move on.

I had captured the Ponyta in a relatively simple manner. Swampert wasn't really damaged, and no mountainside was destroyed. I watched as my ranger walked over and picked up the Pokeball and placed it in her bag, with the Darmanitan Pokeball.

I had ordered Swampert to take a power nap, to regain some energy in case I needed it later.

"Eh, I'll go ahead and call it back so we can press on," I answered. The inside of Mt.Deckbi was somewhat like a puzzle or a maze, and it truly put the will and trust of trainers and their Pokemon to the test. In addition to that, many interesting Pokemon are located within Mt. Deckbi.

I thought for a bit. Infernape and Swampert would probably be the Pokemon that see the most action inside of Mt. Deckbi. Infernape was a very clever Pokemon, and could no doubt make use of the terrain and trust my every word, and well....Swampert would be calm wherever he was.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Tony decided to call back his Pokémon, and the sleeping Swampert disappeared in a flash of red light back into his ball. Ivy nodded and motioned to Haji with her head, and the two began to lead the Trainer into the mountain.

There were quite a few rocks in the path, more than she remembered there being. There could've been a minor earthquake or just some shaking from a Pokémon, she supposed. They made walking a little difficult, as some of them were about waist high, requiring them to crawl over. She sort of hoped it was from a Pokémon. There had been reports of the volcano starting to act up lately. They didn't need that sort of trouble, especially not today.

The entrance tunnel was about two of her arm spans wide, but she knew some of them got much smaller, like those on Oktori that you had to crawl through. She was going to try and avoid those areas if she could though, unless the Trainer was adamant about going through them. They should be alright though. Since everyone had been coming to Deckbi lately, she was starting to know the place like the back of her hand.

Thankfully, it was a little less humid inside the cave, though it was a bit damper. It was a different feeling. She didn't exactly like it, but it was better than the sun beating down on them. The cave was darker too, so she had to get her flashlight out to shine down the path. She didn't want to trip and fall on her face.

It was mostly quiet too, which was weird. There were usually a bunch of scratching sounds from other parts of the cave or roars from battles being fought elsewhere. There were probably a few other Trainers here at the moment, but they didn't run into anyone.

They continued down the path until they reached a fork, and she took the right side deeper into the mountain without hesitation. The path didn't lighten at all as they went, so the beam from her flashlight was the only illumination.

Then, there was a grinding noise, and then some dust started falling from the ceiling. Ivy stopped and shined the light up, watching as the dirt all came from one tiny spot. Then, the earth above them cracked, and with a large bang, a form came bursting down from the ceiling. The floor shook a little as the thing landed, and when the Ranger took the light down to see what it was, she was met with a yellow and brown hedgehog.

“Well, that was quite an entrance, Sandslash,” she told it. Then she looked back at the Trainer. “Want to battle this one?”

"Want to battle this one?" Ranger Frost turned and asked me. I thought for a moment. I really didn't have a need or particular want for a Sandslash, and I figured that I ought to leave it for someone else who wanted one.

"Nah, I think we should leave it alone, I don't really need one..." I stated. I thought of ways we could get away from the Sandslash without a direct confrontation. I really didn't feel like putting my Pokemon through the motions of a battle if I wasn't trying to capture the Pokemon, and I also was feeling a tad lazy.

"I'm gonna try to use my Pokedoll. Maybe that will distract Sandslash and we can get away," I said. I reached into my bag and placed my Pokedoll down.

    I hoped for the best.
