    Ranger Nick's log

"Man, I got way too much crap" I said, setting down my last cardboard box. The small room that was now my new office felt quite bland with the blank walls and unopened boxes stacked on top of the empty desk. Still, it was a lot better than no office, which was what I had at my old job as a Pokemon researcher. I mean, I loved researching, but being a ranger I can still research yet enjoy the outdoors as well.

    "Electrode!"
Issac came rolling in, pushing a box that I apparently left behind.

"Whoops, thanks Issac. Guess I'm more nervous than I thought I am."
It was only my first day on the job, but I heard that I was already getting a trainer. The anticipation was staring to get to me. Any moment now someone was going to walk in the door, file in hand, and give me my first assignment.

No sooner than the thought went through my head that one of my Co-workers stepped in, manila folder in his hand. I recognized him immediately as Ranger Jay.

"Hey man," he said "guess what? we got a train- ack!"
He stopped short as soon as he set eyes on Issac. I'm used to it by now. Electrode will give anyone pause due to their tendency to explode without warning. It always makes me chuckle inside whenever someone flinches in Issac's presence. At least I don't get messed with. Anyway, nobody has to worry about Issac, I trained him for years to never explode without my command. But I wasn't about to tell Jay this, heh heh heh.

"Whoops, sorry about that." I said, recalling Issac to his Pokeball. "What were you saying?"

Jay seemed undeterred by Issac. I'm guessing he figured that I wouldn't risk blowing up half of the Ranger Station. "As I was saying, welcome to the force Nick, here's your first trainer."

He handed me the file. "It's at the Botanical Gardens. A great place to start off at. You shouldn't really find yourself in a bad situation."

"Thanks Jay," I said, taking the file and looking it over. "Hmm... Joe Smith... Infernape... looks good! Alright, I'll head over there now. Thanks Jay!"

    "No Problem. Don't forget anything."

I grabbed my backpack and headed over to the jeeps. Personally, I can't stand artificial teleportation. I'd rather drive any day. Fortunally, the Botanical Gardens were only a few minutes away. As soon as I got to the gates, I spied a young trainer wearing a baseball cap sitting on a bench near the rest station. He was probably either 15 or 16 years old.

I drove over to where he was sitting and hopped out of the jeep, Issac following behind. "Hi, my name's Ranger Nick. Where would you like to go first?"

"Hello, I am Joe, I just want to go and catch Pokemon. I am interested in Grass Pokemon, so that's why I choose Botanical Gardens, also it's my first time in the National Park so I thought I would choose something easy" I replied.

I noticed that him was a Electrode. I had never seen one up front like this. I decided to let Zippy out for a bit since he doesn't really like being inside a Pokeball. I grabbed the Pokeball and threw it in the air and out came an Infernape. I patted its back, avoiding the flame on its head. Then Zippy walked over to Electrode and started playing with it. I smiled and said "Zippy has a new friend"

I walked back to the bench and double checked my bag in case I had forgotten something. I muttered to my self " 6 Park Balls, 1 Hyper Ball and 1 Max Potion, Yup that's all" I picked my bag up and threw it over my shoulders.

I turned to Nick and asked "So when do we get started?"

"So when do we get started?" asked Joe with an excited flair.

"Right now." I said walking over to the garden's front gate. I raised my browser to the scanner. A couple seconds and a few beeps later, the pneumatic lock disengaged. Pushing open the gate, I walked over to the jeep, beckoning Joe to hop in.

"These jeeps are of the highest technology." I explained to Joe as he got in. "They are powered by Hydrogen Fuel cells, cutting noise to a minimum. Since it runs off of hydrogen, the only emission is pure water. These combine to give us a vehicle that we can take into the park, and not worry about the impact on the environment." I didn't know if he cared or not about this science mumbo-jumbo, but I just can't help myself. It's just the nerd in me.

Only a few minutes into the park, and we could already smell the wonderful scents coming from the Gardens. I could smell the Roselia and Roserade, the Bayleef and Meganium, and... ugh.

"Dang it." I thought aloud. "I forgot the Gloom were in season."

I'd recognize that pungent smell of rotting meat and gym socks anywhere, and of course, a few seconds later we saw a field full of Gloom. I drove a little faster to try and get away from them as fast as possible. Soon we found ourselves near a field of much more pleasant-smelling Skiploon.

"Ah much better," I said relieved. I didn't want my trainer's first park experience tainted by the notorious scent of Gloom. All of a sudden however, a large road block appeared after reaching the top of a hill.

"Aww man, bummer." I said. The Snorlax blocking lying in the middle of the road was sound asleep and looking like it wasn't moving anytime soon.

"Well, we could just take another path," I said, turning to Joe, "but why don't we make the most of the situation? What do you say? Do you want to try to capture the Snorlax?"

"Do you want to try to capture the Snorlax?" Nick said

"Wow a Snorlax" and as I said that a huge snore came from its mouth, "I think it looks happy sound asleep, I better not wake it up"

I scanned the area around me and noticed that Botanical Gardens was a very beautiful place. It was great to see Pokemon in their natural habitat.

I turned to the back of the Jeep to find Zippy also enjoying himself. I smiled and turned to Nick and said "Carry on please"

Joe seemed impressed by the sheer size of the Sleeping Pokemon. Either he was intimidated by its strength, or he simply wanted to leave it alone, Joe decided to move on. It was just as well, Snorlax can be very tenacious when awoken. Taking on a Snorlax might require more than one Pokemon, even for one as powerful as Infernape. Still, if one could catch one, they make great parners.

“Alrighty then, lets move on then.” I said. I stared to make a K-turn to find another path down the road. I was going to have to report this Snorlax when I get back to base. No sooner than I got the car turned around that I had to hit the brakes. Yet another Pokemon was in the road, but this one was wide awake.

“Well, what do you know? This Snorlax has a cub!” I said as the Munchlax nonchalantly wandered across the dirt road in front of us. Snorlax were very protective of their young, and the fact that this Snorlax was sound asleep indicated that this particular Munchlax was fully mature. Munchlax however, are very clingy, and won't usually leave their mother's side for a few weeks after they are forced from the nest.

“Normally, we'd leave this little guy alone,” I told Joe. “But I can tell that this one is perfectly fine for capture. This guy won't be nearly as big a challenge as the big lug behind us, so what do you think?”

I looked down at the Munchlax and then suddenly I remembered on one of my travels I saw a Munchlax fending off a swarm of Pidgey for some honey. I was amazed by the strength of it. I then remembered that Munchlax evolves into a Snorlax, and by the huge size of the one I just saw, I wanted to battle it.

I called Zippy forth and jumped from the Jeep. I standed across from this young Munchlax, eager to battle.

"Ok Zippy you want a new friend? Well then we have to be aware what Munchlax is doing"

Zippy looked up and smiled. I knew that he understood me.

"Ok Zippy, Lets use Flame Wheel with all that power you have"

Normally a attack with this much power would knock it out but I happened to recall that Munchlax ability is Thick Fat and takes 50% power from Fire and Ice attacks. This would help me not kill Munchlax.
I too had been a researcher about Pokemon Abilities.

I turned around and smiled at Jake.

OOC: Who's this Jake person? Did I miss something?

Joe seemed excited to be able to capture the Munchlax. He hopped out of the jeep, his Infernape following closely behind.

“Munchlax!” cried the young Pokemon. It was surprisingly friendly towards the much larger Infernape. Joe said a few words to his Infernape, and then prepared to battle. The Munchlax, meanwhile, was waving to Infernape to say hello.

“OK Zippy, use Flame Wheel with all the power you have!” Joe commanded. Flame Wheel is an effective, but not overly powerful attack with good accuracy. It was also risky, because some Munchlax have Thick Fat, which cuts the power of Fire moves in half. I couldn't tell what Joe's strategy was yet.

Meanwhile, his Infernape charged towards Munchlax with vigor. Even while facing down a powerful strike, Munchlax remained still. Then, I noticed something in Munchlax's hand. That heart shaped, pink item was none other than a Pecha Berry. Strange, that wasn't there before. Then it hit me. This Munchlax did not have Thick Fat as its ability...

Munchlax took the berry and threw it at Infernape. Fling attack was one that was rarely seen done by a wild Pokemon. The berry flew at Infernape, but was incinerated by the flames surrounding Infernape. While the attack did no damage, it did distract Infernape, causing it to veer off at the last second. The result was only a light brush as the attack just missed its target. Still, the heat coming off of Infernape was enough to cause a slight amount of damage to Munchlax.

Infernape slowed down, making a U-turn in the middle. He was clearly annoyed from being distracted. Munchlax in the meantime, was rubbing the place where the Flame Wheel brushed past. Even while in pain, Munchlax still had a light mood. He turned to the side of the road, where there were trees with various berries on them. He bashed the tree with a Headbutt, and started chowing down on as many berries as it could.

I looked towards Joe to see what he will do next.

OCC: Sorry, I got mixed up, I meant to say Nick

I looked at the Munchlax eating the berries. I noticed it eat all of them within seconds. I said to myself "Wow he must be hungry" I then noticed that he had actually used Stockpile. This little Munchlax had quiet a lot of surprises about him. I completely forgot about his second ability, maybe that's why they kicked me out from the Academy?

I cleared my mind from my past and continued to the battle. Then suddenly I had an idea.

"Zippy, I want you to use Taunt then followed by Mach Punch, Show him whose boss"

OOC: Gotcha, No worries. Also, don't forget that you need to meet a minimum character requirement, otherwise there will be a penalty in capture chance. I forgot to post it in the stats last time, I'll do it from now on. ^_^

Munchlax kept chowing down on those berries. Chances are it was about to use Swallow and recover some health. That is, unless Joe could stop it somehow...

"Zippy,” said Joe, “I want you to use Taunt then followed by Mach Punch, Show him whose boss!"

Using Taunt was always a great defensive strategy for moves that require multiple uses. Now the question was whether the move would take or not. Sometimes moves like Taunt and Attract just don't work on some Pokemon, so it is always a gamble. Perhaps Munchlax's personality would render it immune to such attacks.

Infernape began to jump up and down, yapping in its strange language and making lewd gestures. If I could translate what Infernape was yelling, it'd probably would not be sutable for anyone under the age of 17.

I looked over to where Munchlax was enjoying its meal. It got distracted by Infernape's constant cat calls and insults. Clearly, the Big Eater Pokemon was becoming more and more infuriated as the berating continued. The Taunt was sucessful!

Now it was the matter of the Mach Punch. Not only was it a fast and powerful technique, but since Munchlax was a Normal type, so it would do double damage. Infernape's fist began to glow with a blue light as he charged towards Munchlax. Munchlax in response, curled up into a ball just before Infernape's strike hit home. The immobile Munchlax took a direct hit from Mach Punch, but the Defense Curl did lessen the damage. That was still a rough hit though, and it knocked Munchlax into the air.

However, in the apex of its arc, the Munchlax began to spin at a high speed. As soon as it touched the ground, it took off at a high speed towards Infernape. Joe would have mere seconds to react.

OCC: Looking at that Required amount :/

Munchlax looked very happy eating its berries, I couldn't help wonder if I made the right choice to battle it, Too be honest I hadn't been in much battles before. Any way I looked away from the ground and stared at Munchlax. My tactic had worked; I had immobilized Munchlax's Ability to use non-attack moves.

I had watched my Dad use this tactic when he competed in the yearly Competition held at my Local Lake, Lake Thorns. I remember very well that my Dad won the competition with this move and i started using it my few battles.

I looked over to Zippy who now was starting rolling up a Mach Punch, but then suddenly Munchlax tucked into a ball and reduced the power of Mach Punch. I looked up to see the small little feller flying through the air. When it landed it started to roll into a little ball and started to speed its way towards Zippy. I would have to give Zippy an order quickly or else it would be a powerful attack.

"Zippy, Use Mach Punch on the ground to send yourself flying and then use Torment to stop Munchlax Rollout gaining speed and power"

I had been a very tactician in battle and use Zippy moves to my advantage. As my Dad said to me at the end of the Competition last year, "Son, Just remember this, the best defense is the Best offence" Those were some of the best words he said to me.

I muttered to my self, "I will capture this Munchlax, I will capture this Munchlax"

OOC1: Silly me, I mixed up Taunt and Torment, so Munchlax shouldn't have been able to use Defense Curl. Oh well...

Munchlax was bearing down on Infernape quickly. Joe needed to make a move soon, or that Rollout was going to do a ton of damage. Not only was it a rock type attack, but that Defense Curl used earlier doubles its power. It appears that Infernape's taunt didn't quite work as planned.

"Zippy, Use Mach Punch on the ground to send yourself flying and then use Torment to stop Munchlax Rollout gaining speed and power"

It was a strategy that I had seen used many times by trainers when dodging a powerful move. Using an ability that is normally used to inflict damage to launch oneself into the air. Classic, yet effective.

Infernape's fist once again started to glow blue as it slammed the ground. The hard-packed road allowed for optimum transfer of momentum as Infernape was launched into the air just as Munchlax passed under him. Unfortunally, Munchlax's rolling was kicking up a lot of dirt and rock, some of which hit Infernape in midair. As Munchlax was making a U-turn to make a second run at Infernape, Infernape began to make loud, grating bellows. Unfortunally, Muchlax being rolled up in a ball also made it hard for it to hear or see anything, so the Torment was literally falling on deaf ears.

Looking over at Joe, I could tell that this battle was taking more out of him than his Pokemon. The decision now was whether he will continue to try to catch the Munchlax, run away, or finish it off...

This was one hard Munchlax, It was rolling quickly at Zippy and was going to be a direct hit. Suddenly Zippy used listen to Joe and used Mach Punch on the floor to dodge the attack.

"Nice work Zippy" replied Joe who seemed to be relieved that his idea had worked.

However Munchlax rolling had kicked up a few rocks which had hurt Zippy mid air. Zippy tried to use torment Munchlax but due to Munchlax being tight in a ball it was so effective.

I looked now worried, This was a hard battle and was putting on a sweat, I saw Nick glance round, he too could sense that this was going to be a hard match. I then began to think, what was the real reason I came to Botanical Gardens? I thought it was to catch Grass Pokemon since I desperately needed some flower power on my team.

I looked at the rolling Munchlax, it didn't look hurt enough for a Pokeball, I then glanced over to Zippy and saw some damage. Do I want this battle to continue? I then remember another saying from my father "Never give up, Give it all you have got"

I turned my cap around and gave an order to Zippy

"Zippy, Listen to me, I want you to calm down and gain focus for this next attack, Use all that power you have and use Close Combat, Don't miss, I believe in you, You can do it"

Zippy looked at me confusingly, and so would I if I was order to use Close Combat on a Normal type.

"Its OK Zippy, I don't want to catch this Munchlax and it looks like the only way is too knock it out

“Don't miss, I believe in you, You can do it!" Yelled Joe as the Munchlax came closer and closer to making contact with Infernape. It looked like Joe was planning to finish off Munchax with one final move. Close Combat was a risky move, as it left you defenseless as the move took place. If successful though, it could cause a lot of damage.

Munchlax came closer and closer to Infernape, but Infernape appeared determined to strike it down. At the last second, Infernape used its arms to stop Munchlax on a dime. Effective, but even a martial arts master like Infernape had to have felt something from that impact. Then, in a flurry of flaming arms and legs, Infernape punched and kicked Munchlax without pause. Finally Infernape wound up for one last finishing blow, hitting Munchlax with all of its limbs at once. The resulting force blasted Munchlax about ten yards, where it landed motionless.

“Well, it look like Munchlax has fainted.” I told Joe. “Guess it's time to move on then.”

I recorded the fainted Munchlax into my Browser, and started to walk towards the Jeep. “So, still looking for a grass type, eh? Well, I think I know the best place to look.”

The Munchlax was now rolling right towards Zippy and within a few minuets it would hit causing Zippy and Joe some problems. However Zippy smiled and then blocked Munchlax in it's path. Then started to punch, kick and hit in the immobilized Munchlax, then with one more punch Munchlax went flying.

"Great work Zippy, You did great" I praised Zippy.

“Well, it look like Munchlax has fainted.” Nick said. “Guess it's time to move on then.”

I recalled Zippy for some rest and started to walk back. However behind me I heard a scuffling noise and the Munchlax body had disappeared.

"I guess it has gone back to it home or mother?" I said to myself, then slowly walked back to the jeep

I saw Nick enter press some buttons on this portable device, I guess its something that rangers did when a Pokemon had been knocked out or caught.

“So, still looking for a grass type, eh? Well, I think I know the best place to look.” said Nick

"Yes I am" I was excited that Nick was taking me to a place where there was quiet a lot of grass Pokemon. Although there was a real reason why I wanted a grass Pokemon so bad. I then hoped in the jeep and beeped the horn

Joe was looking really excited to get going and find his own grass type. He was so excited that he rushed past me, jumped into the jeep and honked the horn. I appreciate his enthusiasm, but in this case it may have been a little much.

“Alright, alright, move over, you're in my spot.” I said laughingly, motioning him to move over into the passenger seat. I open the back door for his Infernape, and jumped in myself, activating the engine.

However, pulling away, I noticed that all the commotion we caused woke the Snorlax from before.

“Oh, crap... This is not good.” I floored the accelerator. Snorlax are very cranky when they get woken up from their nap. Technically the speed limit in the park was only 15 mph, but rules are meant to be broken in emergencies.

Looking back, I saw the Snorlax bumbling along behind us, an angry expression on its face. Snorlax may seem slow and clumsy, but when aroused there aren't very many Pokemon that can outrun one. Having an idea, I pulled over, jumped out of the jeep and sent out Issac.

“Alright Issac, use Light Screen!” Issac charged up, and created a large barrier between us and the Snorlax. The Snorlax kept rumbling towards us, unaware of the invisible wall between us. Upon reaching the Light Screen, it rammed into the wall full force, causing it to fall backwards.

“Joe, run into those trees, hurry! I'll hold it off.” I yelled to Joe as the Snorlax slowly heaved itself up. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Joe and his Infernape run for cover. “Alright Issac, I want you to use Rollout, but spin around him!”

Issac sped around and around Snorlax, the lumbering Pokemon confused as to what was happening. Soon, the Rollout attack kicked up a lot of dust, which swirled around Snorlax like a dust devil. The moment I felt that Snorlax's vision was clouded enough, I recalled Issac, and made a beeline to where Joe was hiding. Looking back, I saw the dust subside and Snorlax confused as to where we had gone. After only a few seconds of looking around, Snorlax laid back down and fell asleep.

I gave a low whistle as I turned around to face Joe. “That was a close one” Joe still seemed a little shaken by the ordeal, but nonetheless unharmed. See ing a light shaking in the bushes next to us, I thought that the Munchlax may have returned for more, but instead, a young Budew came out.

“Well hi there little guy!” I said to the Budew in a calming voice. The Budew gave a hello chirp, and then approched Infernape with a curious look on its face.

“Well now, Budew are both grass-type, and much easier to catch.” I said to Joe. “What do you say, would you like to catch the Budew?”

I suddenly looked behind me and noticed a the same Snorlax charging at us, If i guessed right it was the same Snorlax I encountered a while a go. It seemed that is was disturbed by the battle.

Suddenly we were riding down the road past the required speed limit but still the Snorlax was up at our tail. Then Nick jumped out with his Electrode and order me to run towards the forest. In a situation like this I had to obey him so I quickly ran into the forest with Zippy

I looked behind me and saw Nick's Electrode produce a Light Screen to block the running Snorlax. Snorlax, unaware of the Light Screen ran straight into the Screen and was sent flying.

I could hear what Nick ordered but his Electrode started to roll around in a ball and circle the Snorlax. In doing this it created a small dust storm and Snorlax couldn't see where it was going. Then Nick and his Electrode ran into the forest where I was standing nervously.

Behind me I heard a rustle, I leaped back and waited to see what Pokemon it was. Then a small Budew came out

“Well hi there little guy!” said Nick as he bent down to greet the little Pokemon. It then turned to Zippy with a curious face.

“Well now, Budew are both grass-type, and much easier to catch.” Nick said to me. “What do you say, would you like to catch the Budew?”

I looked at the little Budew and then at Zippy and then turned to Nick

"Ok, I would like to Challenge this Budew, Ok Zippy use scratch"

Zippy looked at me and nodded, then walked forward towards Budew

After thinking about it for a few seconds, Joe decided to battle the little Budew. Personally, I thought it was a good choice. Budew are easy to capture and make loyal partners in battle. Plus, its final evolution, Roserade, is a tough battler. Still, Joe will need to keep his wits about him in any battle, no matter how easy the opponent.

Joe started off with a simple scratch attack. Clearly he wasn't about to use any fire type attacks on Budew, as it would spell trouble for the little grass type. Infernape, meanwhile, wound up and slashed at Budew with sharp claws. Budew recoiled and gave a yelp of pain from the attack, but soon gave an angry look to Infernape. It seemed that Budew was ready to take on a challenge.

Budew began to shine with a bright green aura, and soon a green line of energy connecting Budew and Infernape appeared. “Buuuuuud!” it cries as the attact took place. Checking this particular Budew's known abilities, It was obvious that it was using the only damaging move in a Budew's arsenal.

Seeing the obvious disadvantages that Budew had against Infernape, this looked like an easy capture. However, if there was anything I learned back in the Ranger academy, it was that anything can happen given the right scenario...

Zippy ran at Budew with his sharp claws and scratched Budew across its body. It then suddenly cried out loud and then gave Zippy evil glare. Zippy smiled as he was teasing the Budew.

Then suddenly the Budew started to glow in a bright green aura. I knew exactly what move it was using and I knew that it was using the move Absorb. It was the only effective move in its arsenal apart from Mega Drain. Infernape cried out loud as its energy was being taken from him, However he still managed to get back up ready for battle.

I didn't want to hurt this Budew to bad so fire moves were going to be a problem. It looks like I would have to stick with simple moves as Scratch and Fury Swipes, but Scratch wouldn't bring it's energy down.

"Zippy, Use two more Scratch attacks" I ordered Zippy

I was hoping to know Budew ability.....

OOC: Since Budew has such a disadvantage, I'm going to be more critical of your posts. Be sure to be more discriptive when using combos and pay attention to your mon's nature.

Budew's attack hit its mark, draining a bit of Infernape's health. The type difference was becoming more and more apparent as Budew's attack did little damage. Although the reasons why Joe was so intent on capturing a grass-type were still unknown to me, having his Infernape with him obviously was making it easier.

It was early into the battle when I got a call on my Browser.

    “Yes, Hello?”

“Nick? Good you're there.” It was my friend Diana, a ranger who graduated from the academy with me. She and I were both best friends and big rivals at the same time. We both sort of challenged the other to be the best ranger in the past. Now that we are colleagues at the National Park, our rivalry has ended, but our friendship remains.

    “Yeah, whats up?”

“Nick, we have some thing weird in the “special” area in the Gardens. Do you think you could check it out? “

“I'm with a Trainer right now, but I now that I think about it, we were just headed over there soon anyway. I'll go check it out.”

“Thanks Nick, see you back at the station”

    “Alrighty, see ya”

After I hung up, I saw Joe order his Infernape to use another two Scratch attacks. Joe seemed to want to whittle Budew's health down to the point where he could catch it. However, his Infernape seemed to have other ideas.

To Infernape, this battle was clearly becoming very boring, very fast. Instead of dashing forward to deal the scratch attacks that Joe had commanded, he instead began to yell and throw sticks at Budew. The Torment attack didn't seem to work, as Budew was already angry enough. Soon after seeing the Torment fail to work, Infernape instead wound up and unleashed a powerful Ember attack. The resulting blast threw Budew into the air, where somehow on the way down it managed to connect another line of energy, this one seeming less powerful than the last.

Now it was time to see how Joe would react to this situation.

OCC: Ok, Just seen the Nature 'Impish' and know will try and do more descriptive combos

"Zippy use...." I was quickly disturbed by a ring tone from Nick's portable device.

I didn't want to listen to the conversation because that is just rude, but I managed to pick out the words 'special area' Were we going to a new place? Anyway I turned and look back to the battle.

"Zippy, Use two more Scratch attacks" I ordered Zippy

Zippy looked away as it was bored and decided to throw stick at the budew. This was torment not scratch. Budew didn't fall for the Torment but then was hit by a ball of flame. this is all going terribly wrong. I remembered that 'Impish' natures like to do really complex combos and love doing tricky moves.

I took that into consideration, "Zippy, Use Mach Punch on the ground to gain height, then jump over Budew acrobatically and use a surprise Scratch attack"

This time I hoped zippy would listen to me
