    I awoke with a start in my office chair. Moaning, I rubbed my face and tried to massage out the crease marks that had developed on my face. A night on the computer can lead not only to keyboard face, but several hundereds of pages of 'f's. I sighed, giving up on the fruitless endeavor and began on a new one to erase the misplaced letters.

    As I did however, I soon noticed a folder laying on my desk.

    Shawn Harbitt
    Run Date: 4-20-11

    "Crap!" I exclaimed. I pulled open the cabinet to my lower right and pulled out three Pokeballs and hooked them on my ranger belt, which had dug into my hips over the night. I mentally crossed my fingers as I looked over to the exit door of my office and sighed in releif when I saw that my ranger's backpack was ready to go.

    I grabbed it and tapped a Pokeball on my belt. A Gallade coalesced next to me.

    "Woods," I commented and I felt my surroundings dissapear in a pink mist. The early morning sounds began to come through to me as if muffled by a closed door and I began to see the towering trees of the Woods area. I noticed a person standing by the outpost...

    I arrived at the Woods area in the National Park at about 9 a.m. this morning. The somewhat dim sunshine fluttered through the trees as it descended upon the sky. I looked around for a bench to sit down on while I waited for my new ranger. I was able to find one in a short amount of time. Carefully, I took off my heavy backpack and laid it beside me, making sure the attached Pokeplayer was still secure. I didn't want that to fall off unexpected.

    I unzipped the front pocket of my bag and pulled out a fresh water. I nearly gulped the whole bottle down in one thrust, which was odd, as I wasn't that thirsty. The air was pretty crisp, to be honest. It was a nice change from the searing heat I felt only a while ago.

    It was only a few days ago that I left the ranges of Mount Deckbi. Alas, I couldn't leave the Park just yet; there were much more Pokemon I wanted to catch. For some reason, the Woods called to me. The tall, lush trees, the beautiful foliage. It all seemed fascinating to me. There was supposed to be a fair amount of Bug Pokemon in there as well. Just my luck! I love Bug types.

    I checked my watch. 9:30. Hrm, I thought to myself. This ranger guy must be running late. I pulled out my iPhone from my left pocket and checked my memos. I read out what I had recorded from the front gate's receptionist a few days ago.

    April 20, 2011. Time: 9:15 a.m.

    I was a little dissatisfied, but I was nonetheless forgiving. It was, after all, a beautiful morning. I could have more time to just relax now.

    I peered down at my iPhone again and turned on the Pokedex App. I scrolled down the area I marked as "The National Park." As I tapped the "Woods Area," I heard a Pokemon's cry coming from the Woods.

    Hmm, that sounded like a Venipede... I thought to myself. I really needed one of those. It was a good thing I brought my disk for it. I was almost ready to stand up and walk into the deep forest myself, but I decided against it. It would be breaking the rules, and there was the possibility I could get lost. So, I simply sat back down and returned to my iPhone.

    I swiftly scrolled through the Pokemon list, trying to see what I wanted to hunt for.

    "Aipom...Lickitung...Smeargle..." I said out loud. "There sure are a lot of Normal types in there. I don't really need any of those." I put my iPhone away as I reached into the bag once more. Swiftly, almost with a jerking motion, I grabbed a small canister. On it, seemingly scribbled, were the words "Normal Repellent." I knew how these type repellents worked, to I popped off the capped and sprayed myself from head to toe. I found it to be a little funny, since most people spray themselves to retreat bugs, but I was doing it to find them!

    After I was finished, I grabbed my bag and zipped it up. I looked over at the entrance area. In the distance, I could faintly see a figure walking towards me. Hoping this was my ranger, I gently waved at the person.

    "Hey there!" I called out to them.

    OOC: Great post! Keep it up and you're sure to have a smooth run. Although if there's anything to say, I'd say describe the environment even more. I'm not obliging, per say, but it won't hurt your run to do it.;-)

    "Hey there!" It was a beautiful day and I saw my trainer standing in front of a bench stationed outside of the outpost. He waved at me and I smiled. This was going to be a good run.

    "Hi!" I called back jogging to the location. I approached to see him holding a spent Normal Type Repellant. The park had been trying to stock more biodegradable options for trainers in the park, but they had yet to find a decent replacement for the spray cans that contained the repellants.

    Shawn trew it in the recycling can that was set in row with the trash and compost bins next to the bench. I put my hand out to shake his and said,

    "Hi. I'm Jake and I'll be your ranger for this run." He obliged with a steady shake and we turned towards the gravel path that lead through the initial greenery to the actual gardens. As we walked I turned to him as we passed a giant, planted palm tree and informed him, "There are a few main areas in the Woods. We have a vast greenhouse area to explore. That attracts the more exotic, rainforest Pokemon. Our largest and main area is the forst itself. The forest attracts the more woodland and grass Pokemon. There are two main parts of the forest. The Redwood area is colder and less dense. Pokemon that bury underground and live inside hollowed out logs live here. The other area would be tropical forests. This area has a lot more dense woodland and is very difficult to get through. It is pretty dark due to the vivacious greenery so we'll have to tread lightly on the land. Pokemon that are used to the hot air or poisonous plants will be more likely to roam here. We can go whichever way you would like." I held out my hand as we approached the three main paths that lead to the three areas, and waited as Shawn made his decision.

    "Hi!" the man called out to me. I was a little unsure of who he was. From this distance, I couldn't really tell who they were or what they looked like. However, it wasn't very long at all before my suspicions were confirmed.

    "Hi," he said again. "I'm Jake and I'll be your ranger for this run." I shook his hand as if it were mandatory and stood there for a quick second. We exchanged glances, giving me the impression that he was some force to be reckoned with. His overbearing triumphant stared pierced the heavens of my mind and lifted the cloudiness. I felt safe.

    Then again, I could be wrong.

    He stood somewhat awkwardly, as though he had just woken up from a deep coma. There were several tears in his ranger's uniform. Was he an experienced Ranger, ready to lead me in great strides? Or just a guy who's really bad at doing the laundry? I guess it didn't matter, he was my ranger for the day and I'd have to cope with him, even if he could be a little obnoxious. We didn't know each other very well, so this could very well be an adventure for both of us.

    He started a little rant, perhaps a speech. I wasn't quite paying attention, looking at the little grasses blowing slowly back and forth, back and forth, back and forth...It was so hypnotizing. I couldn't stop gazing at the tiny little plants moving gently with the mother winds. It was as though everything was silent before, but then, with my arrival, everything sprung into action. I was the music that the grass danced to. I was their sonata.

    "...tread lightly on the land. Pokemon that are used to the hot air or poisonous plants will be more likely to roam here. We can go whichever way you would like." My thoughts were interrupted the closing comments of Ranger Jake's ramble. He gestured with his extended hand the three possible paths we could take. I picked up my backpack and unhooked my Pokeplayer.

    "Well, wherever we could find plenty of Joltik and Venipede, my good man!" I reached into the bag and pulled out a voice disk. I firmly placed it into the tray and waited. I waited...and waited...and waited. It then occurred to me that I had to press play. I blushed in embarrassment and did just that.

    Suddenly, a loud cry bursted out of the speakers. This cry was familiar to me. After all, I had heard it just moments ago.

    "Hahah, looks like it's Venipede hunting time!" I smiled at Jake as I hooked the playing Pokeplayer back onto my backpack. "Shall we be on our leave?"

    OOC: YES. DO THAT. PERSONALITY. Keep it up and we'll see about that Venipede.

    As I was clearly explaining the outline of the park for Shawn, it seemed as if his gaze was shifting ever so slightly to the left. Behind me sat the grassy area that surrounded the path on the way to the redwood and savannah areas. When I finally finished the course outline. Shawn snapped happily back onto my face and responded.

    "Well, wherever we could find plenty of Joltik and Venipede, my good man!" I raised my eyebrow a bit as his sustained grin persevered on his face as he looked for something in his back pack. I held my head cocked a little as he unzipped the outer pocket of the pack and pulled out a large, purple sock. He reached inside the sock and pulled out a small disk with a permanent pen marks labelling it "UNCOMMON: VENIPEDE".

    Relaxing my scrutinizing looks for a moment, I glanced away from the process which I had seen many times before. Blades was staring in to space at a few fluttering Beautifly that were chasing eachother above the trees to my right. He seemed to be bored.

    "Blades, I think you should scout ahead this time, see if there's anything dangerous," I said with an attempt at a warming expression. He visibly brightened and flipped around before bolting off in to the tall grass and into the forest.

    I turned back to Shawn who had a puzzled expression on his face. He was staring down at the a Pokeplayer which was now hitched onto his belt. It was clearly on and had the disk in, but wasn't playing. I was about to say something when he let out a small huff of embarassed air and pressed the large 'Play' button on the front. A tittering and screeching noise that only originated from bug type Pokemon emanated freely out of the small but powerful speakers on the Pokeplayer.

    "Well, if you're going to leave it up to me, then I guess I'll just roll for it." I pulled out a my iPhone and opened the Dice app. After typing in three for sides, I selected the quick roll and it gave me a two.

    "There we have it," I said, slipping my iPhone back into my pocket. "The redwoods are that-a-way." I spun around on my toe and began to walk towards the grasses along the path that carved through them.

    I thanked god for not giving me allergies as we paced through the field full of wildflowers and wheat. The towering redwoods were separated from the outpost by a fair 300 meters of dense grasses and wild weeds. Shawn seemed to be holding up pretty well; his eyes searched with an unfaltering gaze for that small, magenta Pokemon. We passed through the grasses without trouble and made it to the impressive old growth trees in no time.

    A pink and bubbly glow from straight up ahead made it clear to me that Blades was back with information to report. From the frothy, pink mass, Blades soon emerged with a powerful air about him. He was obviously happy to take this new role as a leader. He held out his hand and placed it on my forehead and I closed my eyes. A loud smashing sound that was akin to splintering wood rang through my head as he transferred it to me. I opened my eyes and said,

    "Good work. Stay with us for now and we'll see what that was." The three of us treaded on past the stark boundary from the field to the enormous trees. The air changed quickly from warm and summery, to crisp and alpine. It was pure paradise to walk through the old growth forests this time of year; sun streaked in through holes in the high canopy and echoing sounds of eagerly waking Pokemon filled the vast spaces around us.

    My fantasy was soon interrupted, though. A huge Pinsir, no smaller than eight feet in height, ran straight across the pathway and rammed its gigantic claws into the tree to my immediate left. Other than the large gashes that the action created on the tree's trunk, a rain of twigs, needles, and pinecones poured down from the tree. I jumped back and pulled Shawn with me to avoid being knocked out by a 100 foot fall from a wooden trajectory. The Pinsir sat down excitedly, grapped some cones in its small hands and popped them into its mouth like treats. The odd tooth structure gyrated and a metallic purr emanated from its mouth.

    I looked back at a surprised looking Shawn and asked, "Have you ever wante a Pinsir?"

    I winced at the shattering splinters from the charging Pinsir. We stepped back as we watched the Pinsir tear apart the tree like it was a toothpick. I was a little frightened, and I could tell Jake was as well.

    Like me, the Ranger also had and iPhone. When I saw him take it out and actually use it (not like those people who simply buy an iPhone to show off to their friends), I was a little relieved. Someone else in this Pokemon World actually understood the handiness of the iPhone. I wondered what possible apps he had on it. A Pokedex app? Perhaps a Bulbapedia app?

    My enthusiasm lessened when I noticed he was only using the Dice app. Everyone, even the aforementioned posers, used that simple app. Oh well, I thought, at least he used one.

    He seemed to be using the dice to decide which way we went. Obvious. He seemed a little unsure and requested the help from his Pokemon. Of course, the Pokemon obliged, almost gleeful.

    I noticed the forest was quite dense, with not much sunlight reaching our faces. There was almost nothing there for us to use for direction. The leaves drooped, almost as if they were saddened by the fact they were cold.

    It wasn't long until we met up with the Pinsir. Jake looked over at me, still wearing his scared face. I could see his hands somewhat trembling. It took me a while to notice that I probably looked the same way.

    "Have you ever wanted a Pinsir?" he asked me thoughtfully. I pondered the idea of owning the Pinsir. Oh, how glorious it would be to tromp around with the large, sharp horned bug. I was picturing us two, walking around a crowded city, people pointing and cowering in fear. How powerful I would feel!

    Then I remembered I could buy one from a standard Poke-mart.

    I looked back at Jake, ready to respond. I was about to speak, but was stopped by a passing thought. I shouldn't try talking, in case the Pinsir noticed us. I tore into my backpack, fervently searching for a Poke-doll. I handed it to Jake.

    "Okay," I whispered. "Let's try to avoid this guy. Let's try to sneak past it. If we can't, throw this Poke-Doll if you could to distract it. We don't need to draw much attention."

    OOC: Fail ranger is fail.

    ~~~
    "Okay, let's try to avoid this guy. Let's try to sneak past it. If we can't, throw this Poke-Doll if you could to distract it. We don't need to draw much attention," Shawn whispered to me as he slowly unzipped his backpack and revealed a small Clefairy doll with a derp look on its face.
    I nodded and grabbed the doll ready to wield it against the
    Pinsir; these things worked like magic.
    We slowly got up and inched our way around the Pinsir on the wide path. The Pinsir made small grunting noises in its haste to scarf down the pinecones, but other than that, it didn't even seem to think that we were here. As we got to the other side of it on the trail, I directed us to back away slowly. It seemed to take an hour to get the fifteen feet away from the Pinsir that we got to before I turned around and bolted.
    "Let's go!" Shawn was preparedfor this. We both ran from the spot like madmen, making more noise than was necessarily needed. When we felt that we were far enough away, we both stopped and fell against nearby trees for support. I was half laughing, half gasping for air when I noticed Shawn's next encounter.
    A small bug Pokemon was hovering daintily and unblinkingly above a small, baby redwood. I pulled in a bit of air and pointed at the small Pokemon.
    "Illu- Illumise if you... want it..."
    When we managed to get away from the Pinsir, I was more relieved than a fish who escaped a shark. I didn't really have the need to fight it right then, so everything worked out perfectly.
    Until Jake started laughing.
    I looked at him quizzically. He could barely contain himself, his laughing and snickering coming from the gasps leaving his throat. Maybe he was just in shock, I initially thought. That Pinsir was pretty menacing, and we did run for a bit. Then I saw what he was laughing at.
    A small, little purple bug was floating innocently above a small tree. I didn't know much about trees, so I just assumed it was young. Jake tapped my shoulder and I turned to face him. He was still snickering under his breath.
    "Illu- Illumise if you... want it..." he said. His face was turning a tad bit red. I glared at my ranger. As if he was serious!
    "Heheh, no thanks." I said calmly, trying to becalm my rage. "Let's just try to keep moving. Still have that Poke-doll?" He nodded. "Good. Same plan as last time. Let's try to sneak past this cute, useless bug. If not, distract it with another cute object, the Poke-doll."
    "Heheh, no thanks. Let's just try to keep moving. Still have that Poke-doll?"
    I nodded quizzically. Did I sense... anger in his voice?
    "Good. Same plan as last time. Let's try to sneak past this cute, useless bug. If not, distract it with another cute object, the Poke-doll."
    He turned away from the small bug Pokemon and looked toward the forward of the path. Why was he mad?
    The Illumise didn't seem too concerned with our actions, it was merely guarding the small tree that it was hovering above. I raised one of my eyebrows at it and it gave me a stern look, like I was doing something that was against the rules.
    As she grimaced, I felt slightly sadder. Both she and Shawn seemed to be mad at me for no reason. I wondered, again, why Shawn was mad at me. Suddenly, I realized that he had probably been offended by my laughing. I felt a bit better.
    As I stood up and we walked away from the Illumise, who gave no retaliation, I turned to Shawn and said,
    "Hey, I'm sorry about laughing. I was really laughing at our haste to escape the Pinsir, but I'm sorry if I offended you." He visibly brightened, but before he could respond I pointed out a small, crab-like Pokemon that was skittering away from us into a dark hole under a tree.
    Jake nodded as I told him my plan. He ceased his gasping laughs and took a more serious look. Hrm, maybe I was a little too hard on him.
    We walked by the Illumise as if we were insects in a forest. She didn't seem to care, however, the looks she gave Jake worried me a bit. Was there something 'off' about him? I found him to be okay, perhaps a little smelly. Did he put on deodorant today? Who knows?
    When we successfully sneaked past it, Jake stood up. His face was still serious and red. Was he going to say something?
    "Hey, I'm sorry about laughing. I was really laughing at our haste to escape the Pinsir, but I'm sorry if I offended you." He told me calmly. I nodded. It was okay, I wasn't exactly all that mad. I just thought he was mocking my luck.
    If he was, though, he was just in doing so, as the next Pokemon I saw was a Paras. I caught a glimpse of the mushroom crab as it scurried away hurriedly. Jake pointed at it, signalling the question "do you want it?"
    I looked over and said, with a heavy sigh, "Not entirely so." I looked down in his hand and saw him still gripping the little Poke-doll.
    "Sigh...you know the drill, sir." I said, raising my hand to my forehead and shaking my head.
    I felt I knew the answer to my implied query before I had recieved it. Shawn rolled his eyes at the timid bug Pokemon and sighed.
    "You know the drill, sir," he said. I didn't really see the Paras attacking us, but I had seen odder things in the park. We walked on and, un interrupted by a suprise ambush from the Paras, began to further explore the forest for Pokemon.
    The Redwoods were becoming closer together now, blocking the sunlight more and slowing our progress slightly. Smaller, non-coniferous trees popped up in random but close intervals. We were nearing the next patch of the woods.
    A small buzzing droned in the back of my mind. I stopped and placed a hand softly on Blades' Pokeball. Shawn was stopped next to me in response. I looked to the back of us. It didn't really seem to be originating from any one spot.
    A flash of black and yellow zoomed at unbelievable speeds inches away from my forehead. I swiveled in response and fell to a crouch, grabbing shawn with me and tapping the Pokeball to release Blades. He appeared in a crouched position as well. He observed the surroundings silently, knowing what I needed of him.
    He stood up straight and closed his eyes. A blue aura began to glow from his head. From out of nowhere, a Ninjask came flying. It was suspended in a bright blue bubble of psychic energy and thrashing against the elastic walls ferociously. It was pissed.
    "You want one of these?" I said, standing up staight and looking at Shawn.
    Success! We managed to ditch the Mushroom Pokemon!
    I thought to myself as we walked further into the woods. It wasn't long before we started to notice that our surroundings were changing. Less and less sunlight was peering into our vision. The tree were starting to be grouped more closer together than before. I was beginning to think we might be trapped, but Jake looked as though this was expected. Maybe we were entering another part of the woods?
    However, this didn't stop my claustrophobia much, which was weird, as I didn't even HAVE that fear. I kept walking with Jake, determined to get a Venipede. My thoughts were quickly interrupted, though, as the sound of wind was cut in front of us.
    "Whoa!" I cried out in response to the swift blur. I watched as it zoomed pass us both. Jake instinctively called out his Gallade and we ducked to avoid the oncoming, what I assume to be, Pokemon.
    The Pokemon zigged and zagged around the tight forest. I didn't know what to do. My brain was racing, almost as fast as the Pokemon swirling in front of us. Finally, it stopped, revealing itself. It was a Ninjask, and by the looks of it, it was angry.
    "You want one of these?" asked Jake as he stood up to look to me. I had to answer quickly before the angry Pokemon attacked us.
    "Well," I said to him. "I have already had a Ninjask prior to this. I don't think I want another." I stood up with Jake and looked at him. "Use the Poke-doll I gave you. It's gonna be hard to avoid this thing, so let's try without any hassle"
    I was beginning to look a little weary. I was hoping desperately to find a Venipede, and hopefully it was residing in the next part of this ever expanding forest.
    I placed the Doll on the ground above which the ninjask was thrashing. It stopped and looked down at it. It soon began to strain towards the doll. Blades releassed it from its psychic cage and it flew down and siezed the doll.
    Satisfied with the doll, it flew off into the forest. We continued down until the close and odd trees became more prominent. The forest was definitely changing.
    The disk in the pokeplayer that had been p slowly getting quieter finally reached its end. Shawn was forced to remove the used disk and store it for trash later.
    Suddenly, I sneezed. A haze of pollen, illuminated by the sunlight, washed over us. I looked up and saw a Dustox happily circling over us.
    "Theres that. You want?"
    I watched as Jake took the doll and firmly placed it down in front of us. The Ninjask paused for a moment, unsure of the object placed before it. It seemed to analyze the Poke-doll until it fiercely buzzed down towards it, lifting it up into the air with its tiny claws. The Ninjask flew into the outer reaches of the forest, somewhat chirping as it buzzed away. I could tell it was pleased, and I myself felt a bit happier knowing that we cheered it up.
    We continued walking for some time before the Venipede disk faded out. I was a little saddened, as that little bug was part of the reason I came here. Oh well, I'm sure things can only get better...
    I took off my pack again and knelt down. I looked at Jake, signalling to hold on for a moment. I reached inside and pulled out three items. The first was the empty disk case. I unlatched the Pokeplayer and ejected the disk. I promptly placed the disk back into its case.
    The second item was yet another voice disk, this one belonging to a Joltik. Once again, I pressed this disk into the slot and pressed play. However, nothing was playing. I was a little unsure, but I was certain that it would start playing after we met another Pokemon.
    The final item was another Poke-doll. I stood up, Pokeplayer reattached to the backpack, and handed the doll to Jake.
    "Always have to be prepared, right?" I cheerily smiled. He nodded and again we started our trek.
    I looked around at the trees. It was quite apparent that we were now in the other section of the woods. All of a sudden, a loud sneeze erupted from Jake. He seemed startled as he wiped the excrement from his face. We looked up to see a Dustox, circling us and dropping pollen. I smiled, and it smiled back.
    "Theres that. You want?" asked Jake, his voice somewhat muffled from the sneeze.
    "Sorry if I'm being picky, but I think I'll pass, sir." I smiled to him. "This Dustox seems too happy to battle, and I don't want to interrupt that." I pointed to the Poke-doll I recently handed him. "Again, let's try our never-failing tactic. We try to go on our way, and it there's any trouble, we throw the doll as a distraction."
    Even though I hadn't found a Venipede yet, I was still somewhat cheery. I pondered that as we executed our plan.
    OOC: Nice post. Lucky too. ;)
    Shawn decided against the Dustox. I wan't surprised, to tell the truth. Easy to obtain Pokemon were often rejected. However, that doesn't mean that they had their own special place here in the park.
    We just kept on walking. After sneezing a few more times, the Dustox decided to just book it. It flew off to our right and up into a large trunked tree.
    While walking, Shawn decided to put in the new disk, this time for Joltik. He clicked it in and pressed play, having learned from the last time the way in which to use the Pokeplayer. Immediatelly, eclectic purring noises jittered from the small speakers on the Player. It was joyful and childish, but still sounded largely electric.
    Almost immediatelly, a Pokemon responded. A Joltik, no larger that the palm of my hand squaled on its way down from a tree above and landed on Shawn's shoulder. It startled hims and he jumped, but the Joltik had its own agenda. It hung on and crawled down his arm to the Pokeplayer itself. It Began to chew on the buttons, sending small jolts of electricity on to it through the speaker.
    Quickly, I reached over and grabbed the small creature off of the device. I had seen them wreak adorable havok on many electronics. It tried to cling on, but I managed to pull it off. I held it in my hand and it squeaked at me morosely. I rolled my eyes and displayed it to Shawn.
    "I guess you'll be wanting this guy."
    I looked up as the Dustox fluttered away, pollen still falling from its vomit green wings. I shielded my nose from the custom sneezing powder as Jake continued to sneeze. He looked at me and gave a hearty thumbs up, despite his running red nose distracting me.
    However, it wasn't long before my next encounter showed up. Jake poked around at my back innocently and gently, making me wonder what was going on. I could hear a somewhat louder static coming from behind me. It was only until Jake pulled off a small, round electrified ball from my Pokeplayer. My eyes lit up like the fourth of July when I recognized the Pokemon before me.
    "Joltik..." it said in its small, quiet voice. My heart jumped a million miles up as I was awed in cuteness. It was so small, so adorable, I wanted it. No, I needed it.
    "I guess you'll be wanting this guy." said Jake to me, almost as if he wasn't fazed by its godly cuteness. As if we were bored and uninterested. I didn't care much, though, as the need for this Joltik was high.
    "You know it, sir!" I said, almost yelling. I was enthusiastic, but perhaps a little too much. My response somewhat scared the Joltik, making it jump off Jake's hand and preparing to defend itself.
    Honestly, I didn't know what to do. It was so small, but seemed very fierce. I didn't know if I should attack it at all, but I knew I had to. I was just afraid I'd knock it out unintentionally.
    First thing's first, however. I quickly reached into my front pocket of my bag. I pulled out a Soothing Fragrance Super and removed the cap. Gently, I sprayed the scent into the air and wafted it towards the Joltik. I watched as it somewhat grew calmer, but still ready to fight.
    "Alright, you cute little guy. Time for a battle!" I called to it, looking directly into its adorable eyes. I grabbed Chandelure's Poke-ball from my waist and sent him into the fray.
    "Chaaaand..." it said eerily, its flames pulsating and its body rocking back and forth. It looked at the Joltik, and in a moment, it knew exactly what was going on.
    "Alright, Chandelure, let's be careful about this. We don't want to accidentally KO this little guy!" My Chandelure klinked in confirmation. It knew what to do. "Okay, Chandy, make sure you stay as far away from it as you can. Start out with a Hex attack! Then, follow it up with an Ember!"
    My ghostly chandelier readied its attacks, knowing all too well how to execute them. In one half of its body, a blue, maybe purple, colour shone. Swiftly, Chandelure whipped its side towards the Joltik, sending the Hex flying towards it. Several random shapes were jumbled in the purple blob, like the letters in alphabet soup. The triangles twirled, the squares rotating, the circles flailing everywhere.
    Immediately after, my partner readied his Ember attack. The flame protruding from his head grew a smidge, only to lose the growth in a small sea of flames, sent sailing alongside the Hex.
    OOC: Try not to control the Pokemon. Male or Female?
    "You know it, sir!" Shawn responded heartily after seeing the small bug in my hand. I nodded, placed the Joltik on the ground next to me, and stood off to the side of the path. I observed from there.
    Shawn decided to release his Chandelure, a choice that may have been extreme considering the meager defenses of this small Pokemon, but I guess he had his Pokemon under control. It was definitely possible to catch this Pokemon. However, I had seen these little daredevils fight before. They're nasty. You cannot underestimate their small size or you'll end up truly seeing what their moveset is full of.
    The Chandelure swayed a bit in the air before reaching a stop and considering the Joltik. It lacked an expression on its face and waited for orders. The only things moving were its bright blue flames, flickering ominously in a nonexistent wind.
    "Alright, Chandelure, let's be careful about this. We don't want to accidentally KO this little guy! Okay, Chandy, make sure you stay as far away from it as you can. Start out with a Hex attack! Then, follow it up with an Ember!" I though this an okay strategy for Shawn to take. However, I don't think he realized that he was doing an estimated 150 power damage in special attack damage to the small, unevolved Pokemon. Now, Chandelure as a species is coveted for its unsurpassed special attack. It seemed illogical for Shawn to essentially use Fire Blast on the Joltik. Maybe he was hoping it would miss but that was a strategy that, in my opinion, relied too heavily on luck.
    The Chandelure clinked in response and one of its branches seemed to fade into shadow, pulling in globules of ghost energy from the air around it. It stopped and flung the shadowy energy. While in the air, it took the form of a macabre, geometric alphabet soup moving sporadically in time with a complex beat. As soon as the attack left its branch, it flared up on its main flame source on its head. A small burst of flame shot through the air and joined the Hex attack on its path towards the Joltik.
    The Joltik backed up a bit. Right before the attack hit, it jumped with surprising height into the air causing the ground to take the brunt of the attack. Midair, it turned and melted into dark invisibility, probably preparing for a ghost or dark type move. As the attacks hit the ground they splashed outwards. A small lick of flame managed to ignote a small bush to my right. I stepped away from it so Shawn could see and take care of it and returned my gaze to the battle.
    When I tried to spy the Joltik, I couldn't ind it. Chandelure was apparently as confused as I was. It was swiveling from its invisible hanging place in the air trying to spy the small spider Pokemon from the surroundings. Suddenly, a streak of black rocketed from the space directly above Chandelure and struck it directly on its head. The Streak bounced from the impact back to its original resting place. Chandelure was knoced to the ground briefly from this and in the time it took recovering, the Joltik releassed a bright pink hue that covered its body in an iridescent shrinkwrap. The Light Screen could be seen as a blessing or a curse to Shawn depending on how he reacted.
    I turned back to him, allowing him to consider both what move to use next, and how he would extinguish the growing fire to my right.
    OOC: Yeah, sorry. I just didn't want to start attacking it while it was in your hand. Could have been awkward. Also, Male.
    "Damn," I cursed out loud, trying to keep it quiet. "Where did it go?" Chandelure and I browsed the custom battlefield, searching for the palm-sized Pokemon.
    The Hex attack was a success...partially. Sure, it had connected, but the sly devil used the earthy ground to its advantage, letting it take most of the blow. I couldn't tell if the Ember attack made any difference, but it worries me not. We just needed to find the little guy.
    Soon enough, however, I saw him, in a way we weren't expecting. The little Joltik Sucker Punched my ghastly light, forcing him to the ground. It wasn't enough to hurt it too much, but it did catch us off guard.
    Quickly, the fizzing electric bug scurried away, shielding itself with a pink light. A Light Screen... I thought. Perfect...
    I stood defiantly, ready to command my honorable Chandelure to battle.
    "Okay, my friend, it has a Light Screen up. Surely, you know what this means?" My Pokemon looked back and me and tilted its body, signifying that it did. "Good. Now, we don't have to particularly have to be too gentle, yet not hard enough that we hurt it too much." I thought of the best route to take in this situation.
    "Alright, Chandelure, use Confuse Ray to make the little guy confused, then quickly follow up with a Flame Burst!" I told my partner. My ghost Pokemon followed the orders instantly, immediately firing a short flurry of hazy balls towards the shielded bug. We were hoping they would make contact. Oh, how were hoping.
    All of a sudden, a burning smell entered my nostrils, making me cringe. I instinctively looked up, seeing something I didn't expect. A rising billow of smoke was surrounding us, and it didn't take me long to realize that a nearby bush was on fire.
    "Wait, Chandelure!" I yelled to him. "Don't use Flame Burst! Use...use Shadow Ball!" Chandelure looked back curiously. It was so focused on the battle that it didn't notice the fire it caused. Alas, it used the Shadow Ball attack anyways, creating a dark purple-black orb of pure ghost energy and flailing it towards the little bug.
    I couldn't watch the attack to see if it made contact. I had to put out this fire! I reached into my backpack and pulled out one of the many water bottles I had and emptied its content onto the flames.
    "Okay..." I said to myself, gasping. "No more fire attacks for a while..." I turned to watch the outcome of my battle plans.
    Hopefully it wasn't too much for the Joltik.
    As Shawn noticed the appearance of the Light Screen, his face lit up. He knew now that he could get away with stronger attacks, and utilize his Pokemon's finesse in combination attacking. The Chandelure was also clearly happier about this. He had already recovered perfectly from the previous attack and was sweinging back and forth at the point on his head.
    "Alright, Chandelure, use Confuse Ray to make the little guy confused, then quickly follow up with a Flame Burst!" The Chandelure was on it right away. Ominous orbs coalesced in between his frontal limbs and flew out in front of his body. However, right when the attack was ready, the Joltik let out a powerful Screech. I shielded my ears and grunted painfully. I used to nnot understand why Screech lowered defense, but when I experienced it for the first time in battle, I realized that it disoriented you to the point of not really being aware of Pokemon assailing you.
    Chandelure managed to release the orbs, if not with a slightly delayed time. They swooped through the air like evil predators. The Joltik noticed them and began to use his size and speed to try to avoid them. As he dodged one, it would smash into the ground, shattering into useless globules. For one, he even shot a small jolt of electricity at it. It fizzled and faded midair. Despite his effort, however, Confuse Ray was extremely accurate. It zeroed in on him and smashed him right on the back. He began to react immediatelly. His movements became more sporadic and he swayed slightly as he made his way back to the center of the path.
    Meanwhile, Chandelure was recovering from the Screech attack. He grimaced and began to form some acrid smelling flames on his head. Shawn noticed this and looked around. Seeing the flames near me he retracted his late order and replaced it with a Shadow Ball, running over to the burning plant while removing and unscrewing a water bottle from his backpack. He missed the redevelopment of the attack. As Joltik seemed to be shakily observing Chandelure's movements, Chandelure managed to gather enough Ghost energy for it to become a Shadow Ball and fly towards the small bug. It hit directly on target, but as it did, the pink glow intensified from its dormant state and absorbed a good amount of the blow.
    Shawn turned around after successfully extinguishing the flames to witness several random strings of thick, rope-like webbing in Chandelure's direction. As the poor spider was confused, it had a bit of trouble aiming which, in turn, created more trouble for us dodging. As each strand of webbing made contact woth a solid surface, it attached and wrapped in a trapping fashion around said object. Luckily, Shawn and I were to the side of the spray and managed to dodge the few strands that came our way. Chandelure, however, caught the brunt of the attack. Multiple strands hit and encased Chandelure's many limbs. His flames weakened the strands to make them slightly looser, but as they connected to the ground and several trees around him. It didn't look as if hew was going anywhere soon.
    I cringed as the Joltik let loose its ear-splitting Screech attack. My head ached in an instant, and I dropped to all fours. I could barely look back to see how Chandelure was doing. How could such a tiny bug use such an annoying attack?
    However, once the attack was done, I could finally look back to see the battlefield. I was shocked to see Chandelure take the nuisance so well, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Confuse Ray hit. I was even more surprised to see that the globules of Shadow Ball hit as well.
    What shocked me the most was the Joltik's retaliation.
    It shot a gooey spider web at my ghost, confusingly sticking it on the foliage around us. My ghastly Pokemon could barely move, making me worry a bit. However, I knew a way to help out my friendly Chandelure.
    "Okay Chandelure!" I called out to my Pokemon. "Use Ember to get yourself loose enough to attack! But make sure you don't get any fire on the plants themselves!" Chandelure tried to nod in agreement, but it was too restricted to do so. I could see its one loose 'arm" start to wiggle and glow bright.
    "Alright, after you do that, aim carefully at the little bug! You have to let loose a barrage of Flame Bursts! About three!" I went back to my backpack and pulled out two more water bottles, just in case. "Please, don't set off a forest fire! We need to weaken it enough to catch it!"
