    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

    The battle was going pretty smoothly so far, but as soon as Ivy thought the Monferno was going to make another move, it backpedaled and headed back toward Ron. Apparently the other Trainer had to go, as Mowgli was dragging him back toward the gate. Some other staff person would let him out of the gate, so she focused her attention on Jakk, who waved to the departing man.

    Then he turned toward her with a bright grin on his face. Ivy sighed before he even spoke. “Well now, we're both alone up on this cold and snowy mountain. Come on, let's go find somewhere a bit more secluded,” he said with a wink.

    She guessed he didn't feel like battling anymore. She didn't mind; battling two on one in the Park was sort of considered abuse, and even though it was reversed, that would be putting too much pressure on his Electivire.

    She rolled her eyes at his comment, and just as she finished, Brin made a huffing 'not impressed' noise and looked at Jakk pointedly. His cement columns shifted ominously, and Ivy returned her grin to the Trainer as she slid down from her Pokemon's shoulder.

    “I don't think Brin is very impressed,” she said. “Anyway, I can take you on so we can see something else. Looks like those Gurdurr were content to go back to playing.” She watched as the two Fighting-type's went back to their snow forts. One crossed the path in front of them as it did so.

    She continued up the path next to Haji, but she noticed that the Conkeldurr stayed behind her this time, putting himself between her and the Trainer. She could only smile at his antics. She was definitely never bored with her Pokemon.

    Ahead the path was much the same. There was a blanket of snow over everything. She could faintly make out small rocks in the snow. The larger ones stuck out, of course, and there were only the small green tops of the sparse vegetation in pockets. It was the only thing that could grow up here.

    Eventually, a piece of green stuck out a little more than usual. It was a more vivid color too, so Ivy stopped to look at it. Then, the stub of green shook, and the snow that had been on top fell to the side. It began wiggling, and soon a small tree-like Pokemon was standing in front of them.

    “Oh hey,” she said. “It's a Snover. Not a Fighting-type, but do you want a shot at it?”

    The Conkeldurr didn't seem happy about Jakk's comment. The Fighting-type huffed and placed himself solidly between the Ranger and the large man. Jakk was surprised at this, as most if not all of his Pokemon were friendly and laid-back. He'd just assumed that all Fighting-types were chill, but Brin was doing his best to disprove the Gym Leader's theory.

    “I don't think Brin is very impressed,” Ivy replied, doing a good job of stating the obvious. “Anyway, I can take you on so we can see something else. Looks like those Gurdurr were content to go back to playing.”

    Sure enough, the two bulky Pokemon were returning to their snow forts, and Kai wasn't making any move to stop them. Jakk watched them go with a smile - he still wanted a Conkeldurr, but neither of these was destined to be caught by him. That was fine.

    Jakk returned Kai to his PokeBall and followed Ivy along the path. Everything was tones of white, except a few rocks that stuck out of the snow. A little while later a small green-topped Pokemon walked over to the group and looked up at Jakk.

    “Oh hey, it's a Snover. Not a Fighting-type, but do you want a shot at it?” Ivy asked Jakk.

    The large man shook his head. It wasn't a Fighting-type or one of the Pokemon on Jathan's list, so he had no interest in catching it. "Run along little one," he said kindly, reaching into his backpack for a doll just in case the small Grass-type wanted one.

    @ChainReaction01 Now it's time to spend your money. Or waste your dolls rather.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

    Jakk tried to urge the wild Pokemon to leave them be with soft words, but Ivy could tell now little impressed the Ice-type was. The snow began to swirl near her feet, and she didn't want it attacking them, especially since the Trainer didn't seem interested in battling.

    “You should probably use that doll,” Ivy said, gesturing toward the Snover. “It doesn't look too happy.” As she looked back toward it, she could see its eyes tilting down to match the frown on its face.

    Jakk consented to her advice and tossed the doll toward the wild Pokemon gently. Suddenly, the Snover's demeanor changed as it caught sight of the small, fluffy toy. It seemed a whole lot happier, and after a few seconds, it ignored them completely.

    Ivy shrugged and continued up the path, Brin following slowly behind her. She could hear the dragging noise of his concrete pillars in the snow. Haji, beside her, didn't make any noise at all as he gracefully traveled through the snow. She wished she could say the same. However, her boots crunched the snow pretty flat. She supposed she'd rather make noise than have trouble wading through the drifts.

    Soon, they came to a small rock shelf that was half buried in the snow. Being a mountain, there were lots of little places like that on the way up. This one had several platforms at varying heights. On the top one, she recognized a Pokemon.

    It was meditating, which was common for this species. It had a white, onion-shaped head and blue skin. “Hey,” she said as she came to a stop. “There's a Meditite up there. Are you interested in that one, Jakk? I have a Medicham, and she's pretty cool.”

    OOC: Lol, I have enough dolls for like three expeditions >.>

    ~~~~~
    Despite my words, the little Pokemon didn't seem inclined to "run along", so at Ivy's suggestion Jakk threw the doll in my hand off to the side. He noticed as the doll tumbled through the air that it was shaped like a Clefairy. Jakk had never liked Clefairy - they were usually one of the first Pokemon species that parents introduced to their children. When Jakk's parents had taken him to see a Clefairy, a Jigglypuff and a Purrloin at a Pokemon fair, he'd demanded that they take him to where all the "non-shitty ones" were.
    The Snover went after the doll, just like James had promised any Wild Pokemon would. Jakk started to wonder exactly how they worked - no way they were ordinary, run-of-the-mill soft toys - but Ivy and her Pokemon had started to move off, so he dropped the train of thought and ran after them.
    The path was definitely heading upwards, as Jakk could feel a slight burn in the back of his calves. He grinned, enjoying the exercise. A bit of a burn would help ward off the cold that was slowly creeping up his arms.
    “There's a Meditite up there," Ivy said suddenly. "Are you interested in that one, Jakk? I have a Medicham, and she's pretty cool.”
    Jakk looked up from the snow to see a peaky mountain shelf of medium height, and a small Pokemon on top of it. He recognised it as a Medicham, and smiled.
    "No thanks, I already have one," he replied, preparing another doll. "In fact, maybe you've already met her? She came out here for training not too long ago - Sasha?"
    ---
    “No thanks,” he said as he pulled out another Pokedoll, just in case this one gave them problems too. “In fact, maybe you've already met her? She came out here for training not too long ago – Sasha?”
    Ivy nodded as a flash of memories came to her. “Yeah, I know her. She was here on Oktori during the midnight run I took. She was very good. Did you train her?”
    That had been the time that a vengeful Froslass had upset the balance of the mountain. She was using her ghostly powers to manipulate the other Pokemon and get them to do her bidding. She had even used Ivy's body to communicate with them. The Ranger could still remember the feeling. She didn't care to. It hadn't been pleasant.
    She went to move on, but a snap of energy in the air caused her to stop again. The Meditite on top of the rock shelf had vanished from it's spot, reappearing in the middle of the path ahead of them. It was floating a foot off the ground, still in it's butterfly-sitting position. It was looking at them flatly.
    “Well, better hand another one of those over,” she said, waiting for Jakk to offer up another doll. She hoped they weren't going to have to use his whole supply. Not that she worried, since Chainy probably gave him some in the first place.
    The Meditite accepted the doll, and after looking at it for a few seconds, the Pokemon vanished again. It didn't come back to bother them. Ivy shrugged and moved. She hadn't had a lot of time to train with her own Medicham yet, but from what she saw Sasha do, they were pretty powerful. She seemed to be collecting Psychic and Fighting-types lately, she thought. That immediately brought her mind back to Vergil, the Gallade. She needed to find some way to connect to him. He only seemed content on ignoring her, despite her helping him evolve. Maybe she could ask Jakk.
    They came to the base of the mountain finally, to the point where the Trainer would have to make a decision of whether to go up the side of the mountain or to traverse through the caves. There were a couple of smaller rock structures around too, with open ground in between them. She could still remember the way to the place the ghost had battled with Chainy.
    “Okay, which way do you want to go?” she asked Jakk, gesturing to the path leading up the side of the rocks or toward the cave in front of them. “Oh,” she added, upon looking in that direction. “There's a Machop there. Any interest?”
    A small humanoid Pokemon was stacking up fist-sized snowballs at the base of the opening, like it was making decoration for the door or something. She waited for Jakk to decide before continuing.
    OOC: Use doll if I fail.
    “Yeah, I know her. She was here on Oktori during the midnight run I took. She was very good. Did you train her?” Ivy asked.
    "A bit," Jakk replied with a smile. "She was very skilled when I caught her, but yeah, I helped her refine her fighting technique and toughened her up physically. I wanted Dual to teach her the Psychic techniques, though - doesn't hurt for your mentor to be the best."
    He looked back up towards the Meditite, but it wasn't there. Jakk shrugged and started to move forwards but the Meditite was there. The Gym Leader scratched his head - he could have sworn that Meditite didn't learn Teleport - but nevertheless, it was down here now, and it looked like it wanted one of the dolls. That was okay with Jakk, he had plenty to spare. At Ivy's request, he handed the small Fighting-type one shaped like a Numel. It accepted the doll silently and seemed to fade into the whiteness of its surroundings.
    The group continued on, eventually arriving at the base of the mountain. Ivy pointed out a couple of different routes, one of which had a Machop on it. The Machop was making some kind of spherical sculpture.
    “There's a Machop there. Any interest?” Ivy asked.
    "Nah, I don't want to disturb the little guy," Jakk replied. "Let's just climb up the outside of the mountain."
    “Nah, I don't want to disturb the little guy,” Jakk said. He also chose to take the mountainside path. Ivy nodded and turned away from the cave entrance, glad for a change of pace. The last time she had been here, they had spent a lot of time winding through the cave tunnels.
    The Machop was happy to stay where it was, continuing to make a decorative door frame for the cave. That was nice too, since she didn't want to waste all of his Pokedolls. At least mostly. Since he seemed to have a few to burn, she couldn't feel that bad about it.
    They started to trek up the incline that wrapped around the side of the mountain, stepping carefully through the snow that was getting deeper. As she thought about it, small flakes began to drift down. Hopefully it wouldn't become a full-fledged blizzard.
    Soon the came to a small section of rocks, and there was a small Pokemon huddling underneath it. Maybe it was trying to get away from the snowfall?
    It looked human-like, in varying shades of pink and cream. It also had blonde hair on the top of its head. As they passed, the little Pokemon made a noise and pointed, so Ivy stopped and turned to Jakk.
    “Again not a Fighting-type, but maybe it's on Jathan's list?”
    OOC: Use a doll if necessary or w/e.
    The Machop didn't seem inclined to come away from its job, so Ivy and Jakk moved on towards the upwards-winding cliff. The snow crunched under Jakk's boots as he followed Ivy up the mountain, not particularly minding the view as they ascended. Jakk enjoyed it, but he enjoyed thinking about the red-hot rage that James would fly into even more.
    The snow drifting down from the sky began to increase in volume until it was actually being worth called "snow" as opposed to "errant pieces of white". It started to get colder, to the point where Jakk started seriously considering putting on his jacket. He knew he'd have to eventually, but it was a part of his continual training to see how long he could endure the elements. It wasn't so bad yet - the cold spots were barely causing him to shiver - but he'd grab his jumper out of his backpack as soon as he started to shake.
    Jakk was so preoccupied with the decreasing temperature that he didn't even notice the next Pokemon until Ivy stopped right in front of him. The Gym Leader looked around and finally located the reason. Under a small conical-shaped cluster of rocks was a Smoochum, looking up at the pair of humans. It squeaked and pointed at the man.
    "Again not a Fighting-type, but maybe it's on Jathan's list?” Ivy asked.
    Jakk shook his head. "What with Dual and Meta I figure his Psychic-type quota is filled up." He turned to the Smoochum and crouched low. "Would you like to come with us, little one? Or would you like a toy to keep you company?"
    Jakk declined the Smoochum, saying that Jathan had enough Psychic-types as it was. This little Ice-type was fairly common anyway, so Jathan could probably get one whenever.
    The gym leader crouched down to the little Pokemon, taking on a soft voice as he asked, “Would you like to come with us, little one? Or would you like a toy to keep you company?”
    In response, the Smoochum squeaked and recoiled back, ducking further under the rock. It shivered a little bit, perhaps from the cold. It didn't really look like it wanted to go anywhere. Then again, maybe it was just Jakk. Ivy supposed if some strange man was intruding on her territory, she'd be a little wary too. She felt what was the equivalent to a smirk from Haji at her analogy.
    The Trainer gave the Pokemon a doll to keep it company, and it accepted it without much complaint. They continued up the mountain after that. Suddenly, a shrill shriek caught their attention, and Ivy dashed up the incline as fast as the sinking path would allow her. Snow whirled as the wind picked up, and she cleared the crest just as a dark blur streaked across the path.
    Something small and yellow disappeared around a snowbank as the black Pokemon came to a stop in front of it, and that's when Ivy got a good look at it. It was bipedal, and it had pink feathers arced across the back of its head, as well as on the ears and tail. A matching neck ornament and jewel in the center of its forehead accented the creature with razor sharp claws.
    As the Weavile caught sight of them, it straightened up and leveled its gauze straight at them. There was mischief in its eyes, as well as something dangerous.
    “As much as I hate to ask it, since I think this one would rather shred us to ribbons than sit in a Pokeball, do you want to battle this Weavile?”
    OOC: Omg omg omg I hope that little yellow thing is what I think it is!
    The little Smoochum squeaked in distress and backed up into its shelter when Jakk crouched down to speak to it. Its large eyed peeped through its blond hair up at the huge stranger. Jakk felt bad for scaring the small Baby Pokemon so he left a doll just outside its shelter. The Smoochum squeaked once more, but this one seemed more automatic than anything - it started eyeing the toy with interest. Jakk grinned and gestured for Ivy to lead on, which she did.
    Snow continued to drift down, although the flow was definitely getting much heavier. Jakk was just starting to consider fishing his jacket out of his backpack when Ivy stopped moving. Jakk peered around the Ranger to see a Pokemon he could only describe as "mean-looking". It was small and mostly black, but with a fierce red head-dress. Jakk had never seen it before, which meant one of two things: either it was incredibly rare and not often seen in Sinnoh, or it was weak against Fighting-type Pokemon and therefore no-one brought it to his gym.
    “As much as I hate to ask it, since I think this one would rather shred us to ribbons than sit in a Pokeball, do you want to battle this Weavile?” Ivy asked over her shoulder.
    "I wouldn't mind," Jakk admitted, "but it looks so badass. I want to try and take a picture of it first, if possible."
    The large man pulled a small thin camera out of his shorts pocket and lined up a shot of the Weavile, which was looking all around for something.
    After taking a look at the scary-looking Dark-type, Jakk said, “I wouldn't mind, but it looks so badass. I want to try and take a picture of it first, if possible.”
    Ivy nodded as he reached into his pocket for one of the newer, slim digital cameras. A lot of people back at the main outpost liked to collect images of rare Pokemon, and his one would definitely qualify. There were also a lot of Trainers that liked to collect the pictures themselves, for both Pokedex and personal enjoyment.
    Jakk lined up the shot and snapped the photo, and the flash automatically caught the Weavile's attention. It had been looking around for something in the snow, probably whatever it had chased away, but the camera drew its gauze toward them. It look one look at the group of people and then dashed away almost quicker than Ivy's eyes could follow. Then it was gone.
    “Well, I guess you don't get to battle, but at least you got a good shot,” she said.
    A small squeaky noise caught her attention then, and as she looked, a small yellow Pokemon peeked its head out from behind the snowbank. It had a small, red feather-looking spike on the top of its head, as well as a matching red band going down the center of its body. As it looked at them, it pulled a yellow something up to its eyes, hiding its face as if embarrassed. It looked like they were pants of some sort.
    “There's a Scraggy. It might battle you if you want. What do you think?” she asked.
    Jakk waited for the striking Pokemon to present its profile before he pressed down on the picture button. The small black Pokemon's body was lithe and wiry, but anyone who worked out knew that the slender frame bespoke hidden strength as opposed to weakness. Its red headdress and feather-like tail ornament whipped in the wind, and its yellow gem was sparkling against the white snow.
    As soon as the large man took the picture, the Pokemon whipped its head around and took stock of the small group. Once it decided that there was nothing interesting going on, it darted around the mountain in a single blindingly fast movement.
    “Well, I guess you don't get to battle, but at least you got a good shot,” Ivy remarked.
    "Yeah, true." Jakk sighed. "It would have been cool to battle it though, I've never seen a Pokemon like that before."
    Jakk was going to continue extolling the virtues of the mysterious Pokemon but he was interrupted by a squeak. The Gym Leader looked in the direction of the noise and saw a small yellow Pokemon looking up curiously at us from behind a pile of snow. It had a bulbous head and large eyes, which made it seem shy and scared. Jakk could see that its belly was red, except the little Pokemon was doing its best to hide that. A kind of membrane or pouch covered its lower body, and it was trying to hide its face behind this pouch. Jakk recognised it as a Scraggy, the pre-evolved form of a Scrafty. Jakk had a Scrafty in his gym - it was an valuable fighter, as its Dark-typing meant it was immune to Psychic-type attacks, which were incredibly common in his Fighting-type Gym. However, Jakk's Scrafty had been traded to him by a wandering Trainer. It would be interesting to try and train a Scraggy from the ground up. This one certainly looked like a young one - hell, this might even be the youngling's first year away from its mother. They usually stayed in groups, but children didn't usually stay in the same group as their parents.
    “There's a Scraggy. It might battle you if you want. What do you think?” Ivy asked the man.
    "I definitely want to battle it." Jakk grinned. "We'd better be gentle, though - I don't want to scare it off or anything."
    He knelt in the snow, ignoring the cold slush of snow on his skin. Still, it was better that than the sharp scraping sensation of rocks digging into his knee. "Hey there little one," he said in his gentlest voice, the one reserved for children and small animals. "Would you like to battle me? I promise to be gentle."
    Jakk tapped one of the PokeBalls on his belt, and a white flash revealed his Blaziken, Stresser. Stresser would be perfect to fight the Scraggy with, as she was naturally timid too, and so she'd pull her punches. The Blaziken scuffed her feet on the snow and clucked a couple times before crouching down in front of the Scraggy, imitating Jakk. Hopefully the little Dark-type wouldn't be intimidated by the large man and his powerful Pokemon.
    “I definitely want to battle it,” Jakk said as he grinned. “We'd better be gentle, though – I don't want to scare it off or anything,” he added a little more to himself.
    Ivy backed up to give the battlers room as Haji did the same beside her. She thought that Jakk would soon learn that appearances weren't always what they seemed. A lot of the Pokemon of the Park looked meek, but when they battled, they really put everything out on the line. Most of the Pokemon here understood that Trainers came here to capture them, and a lot of them really looked forward to leaving this place and exploring the real world.
    Jakk knealt down and talked to the Scraggy, speaking softly so he wouldn't scare it. “Hey there little one,” he greeted. “Would you like to battle me? I promise to be gentle.”
    The Trainer released one of the Pokeballs, and a tall red and cream-colored chicken Pokemon came out. She was more person-shaped than fowl though, since the Blaziken stood upright. She ducked down to Jakk's level so she wasn't looming over the little Dark-type.
    The Scraggy was silent for a moment, its eyes wide as it looked back and forth between the two fighers. Then, it backed up and made a yelling sound, dropping the pouch it was hiding itself in before. It stuck out its arms straight and opened its mouth wide as it tried to give them the scariest face it could muster. Ivy thought its cry sort of sounded like a 'rwar'.
    Then, it kicked its foot and ran out from the snowbank and into the field. The Scraggy stomped around and waved its arms, looking like it was getting pumped up for something. The little fighter didn't attack, though. Instead, it gave the duo another look before pulling its body into a spin, and then it dug its way into the earth, disappearing under the blanket of white as debris flew out.
    Once it was quiet again, Ivy noted that the weather was starting to act up again too. Snow fell down harder, making big flakes fall. It was getting hard to see, and that was going to make detecting the wild Pokemon's exit point of the dig somewhat difficult. Jakk was going to be careful.
    Ivy cracked a grin as she turned to the man. “Looks like that Scraggy has no interest in playing gentle.”
    The Scraggy looked up at the Gym Leader and his Pokemon, its eyes widening as it switched between them. Jakk started to worry that he had scared the little Pokemon too much. That was, until it jumped backwards and started yelling a war-cry. It waved its arms in the air and continued the growling vocalisation, dropping its baggy membrane so that the cream-coloured folds bunched around its feet. The little Dark-type stomped around in the snow, making a racket and trying its best to look dangerous. Finally, it jumped into the air and spun around before disappearing into the snow.
    “Looks like that Scraggy has no interest in playing gentle,” Ivy remarked with laughter in her voice. Jakk turned and looked up to see a grin on her face. A huge grin split the Gym Leader's face as well, and a flash entered his eyes - similar to the quick flash Jakk had seen in the millisecond before the Scraggy had started yelling.
    "That's fantastic," he laughed. "The best Pokemon are those with fire in their soul! I'd much prefer a tenacious little devil than a meek baby."
    The man turned and addressed his Blaziken, who had backed up and was watching the exchange between the two humans quietly. "Okay Stressey, you're up against a smaller Pokemon. You know what that means - reinforcement and retaliation tactics. Lead with a Bulk Up and as soon as the Scraggy emerges, strike with a Double Kick. Make sure you kick towards the mountain, though - we don't want to send the Scraggy flying off the edge of the cliff."
    Stresser crowed and moved closer to the mountain before flexing her arms. Her claws became wreathed in flame and the long feathers that covered her legs entirely started rippling and emitting small embers. The Pokemon's demonic appearance was completed by the gentle flowing of her white hair, drifting against the blowing of the natural mountain wind. Oftentimes the dangerous beauty of a Blaziken was enough to send an opponent running, but Stresser had more up her figurative sleeves than just beauty. Double Kick was one of her natural moves, and therefore she was more practiced and dangerous with it. It was named accurately - the technique consisted of two kicks, one with each foot. What non-martial-artists didn't know was that the first kick contained only a quarter of the force that the second kick did. Stresser led with her right foot, but that strike was just to ensure the accuracy of her follow-up kick. Her right foot made sure that her opponent was traveling in the right trajectory at the right speed, and then in one blinding fast motion her right leg returned to the earth and her left leg blazed into her target, sending it flying. Often-times I'd even seen her burn the target off of her kick - its sheer speed combined with her fire affinity meant that simply engaging in hand-to-hand combat with the Blaziken was very risky.
    Jakk laughed at the Scraggy's antics. “That's fantastic,” he said. “The best Pokemon are those with fire in their soul! I'd much prefer a tenacious little devil than a meek baby.”
    Ivy could see the joy in him at the prospect of a good fight. He definitely seemed like a man's man, so he would rather have a challenge than tread carefully. She supposed that type of attitude was probably needed in the gym. Gym Leaders were sometimes at odds when restricted to one type of Pokemon, so they did whatever it took to win. That didn't leave much room for pushovers.
    “Okay, Stressey,” he said next, and Ivy had to cover up her mouth with a hand to hide her snort and the grin on her face. She laughed a little as she leaned up against Brin. That didn't seem like a tough name he would use.
    The gym leader told his Pokemon to Bulk Up in preparation for attack, and the Blaziken did so, buffing up her muscles rapidly as she waited. Brin often did the same thing with his own technique. It made the veins on his body much more visible.
    Then, the Fire-type hunkered down to wait with eyes peeled, ordered to use a Double Kick as soon as she caught sight of her target. Ivy wasn't sure where the smaller fighter was. She could barely see the field with all the snow flying around, and the Scraggy probably wasn't making tracks in the ground anyway. She could've used the senses she shared with Haji, but because of the Pokemon's Dark typing, that interfered. Haji could still sense those types of Pokemon, since he said he just looked for gaps in the energy, but she had yet to master that. She would just have to watch.
    There was only sounds of the wind as they all waited in quiet. The snow fell down around them, but luckily for her, Brin blocked out much of it. He didn’t seem to mind being the windbreaker. Jakk was still without a coat, and she wondered when he'd break and finally put one on. She wasn't sure, but she thought she caught him shivering a couple of times.
    Then, there was a crumble as snow erupted into the air. The ground beneath the Blaziken disappeared as the Scraggy came barreling upward into her. She was knocked to the side as the small yellow Pokemon finally revealed itself, looking excited to be fighting. Unfortunately, the new bright environment stunned it for a second, and in that time it was blinded, the larger fighter attacked.
    The Blaziken rushed up and kicked out with her right foot, and before Ivy could even blink, she had switched feet and kicked with her left. This foot held much more power though, and the impact sent the little Scraggy flying through the snow. It tumbled and turned over itself, making a sort of snowball as it finally rolled to a stop.
    The Scraggy wasn't done fighting yet, though. Instead, it got up and shook its head, wobbling a bit like it was dizzy. It looked at the Blaziken carefully, and Ivy did too. She noticed that the Fire-type seemed to be moving faster, despite her getting hit. Then the Ranger remembered the chicken Pokemon's other ability called Speed Boost. The longer she spent in battle, the faster she tended to get.
    Scraggy saw this too, so when it rushed forward, it lept up into the air as it neared the fighter. Like a basketball player, it arched down with both of its fist outstretched and clasped together. Using the momentum from the jump, it came down hard on the Blaziken, sending her sprawling to the ground. This time she didn't get up as fast.
    The Scraggy landed and started to focus, and Ivy had a feeling the next attack was going to be something big.
    “Watch out,” she warned, looking over to Jakk. “That was a Smack Down. If she doesn't get up, that Scraggy's gonna hit her hard with something.”
    Ranger Chainy
    OOC: Jakk kinda seems like a douche here but I decided he was getting to close to being a Gary Stu for my liking.
    ~~~~~

    Just after Jakk finished giving his orders to his Blaziken, he heard Ivy chuckle slightly. He turned around to see her leaning against Brin and hiding her grin behind her hand. He fixed a level gaze onto her and the humour in his eyes drained out. This wasn't the first time someone had laughed at the Blaziken's name, and it was one of Jakk's few berserk buttons.

    "For your information, Stresser has that name because of her childhood," the Gym Leader informed the Ranger. "Her mother and father were killed by Pokemon Hunters and she spent the first few months of her life foraging in the woods and avoiding the hunters. They caught her one day, and just before they started plucking out her feathers I stumbled along and rescued her. It took her weeks to trust me, and even then she was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It wasn't until she evolved into a Blaziken that she really gained control of her stressful tendencies. I found that referring to her problems in a positive, joking way helped her to feel better, and so I named her Stresser. If you have a problem with me calling her Stresser or Stressey, that's fine, but I'd appreciate you keeping it to yourself."

    As Jakk turned back to the battle, he knew he'd probably pay for that somehow, but at that moment he didn't really care. Everyone had hardship in their life, but Stresser had seen far more than her share, and she didn't deserve to be laughed at for any reason.

    The Scraggy suddenly erupted out of the snow right in front of Stresser and flew upwards, headbutting the Blaziken right in her chest, knocking her to the side. Stresser was expecting this, though - her left foot blurred back into the snow to steady herself, and her right foot tapped the Scraggy's side, correcting its trajectory just like Jakk had expected her too. The Blaziken waited a half of a second and then lashed out with her left foot as her right foot slammed down into the ground to support her. Her kick caught the Scraggy clean in the chest, knocking it back into the snow. Unfortunately, the snow cushioned the Pokemon's fall, and enabled it to get up much faster. In fact, too fast - within a couple seconds, the Scraggy was back on its feet and in front of Stresser. It jumped up into the air and brought both of its hands down onto the Blaziken's head, sending it sprawling.

    “Watch out: that was a Smack Down. If she doesn't get up, that Scraggy's gonna hit her hard with something,” Ivy said.

    Jakk's grin re-emerged. This Scraggy was definitely a fighter, and he wanted it bad. Also, Ivy apparently didn't harbour any bad feelings towards him, although it was hard to tell without looking at her. The Gym Leader didn't have time to check, though - he had to act fast, like Ivy had said.

    The snow was causing Jakk and Stresser a lot of problems, so Jakk decided to remove it. "Stressey, turn on your Flare Blitz to melt the snow around you," he called out. Not only would the lack of snow mean that the Scraggy couldn't hide in it, but Stresser's attacks would do more damage. In addition to this, Jakk was pretty sure that Scraggy was primarily a physical attacker, just like Scrafty, so if it attempted to strike the Blaziken it'd get burned bad. This command in and of itself wasn't enough, though.

    "Once you're back on your feet, use your Strength to grab the Scraggy and throw it back this way," Jakk ordered. Hopefully Stresser's Speed Boost Ability meant that she would be able to attack before the fire wore out. Flare Blitz caused lots of stress and temporary damage to the body, but by moving fast Stresser should be able to incurr less damage and therefore maintain the technique for longer. Jakk reached into his pocket and pulled out a small sphere that was the size of a marble. At the press of a button it expanded until it was a full-size PokeBall, except the colouring was different - instead of a plain red top, the sphere had a camouflage pattern. The pattern must have been just for decoration, it didn't seem to serve a useful purpose, but Jakk didn't mind: he thought it looked cool. The plan was to have Stresser damage and throw the Scraggy back this way, and then Jakk could nail it with the capture device, hopefully securing it as his Pokemon.

    @ChainReaction01; You got lucky with your roll XD I guess I didn't realize what you wanted to do with Flare Blitz at first.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

    No matter how well she tried to hide her amusement, Jakk seemed to lock onto it. He whirled around to meet her eyes, and her body immediately stiffened as a result. She could tell aggression when she saw it. In response, she felt Brin's muscles tighten behind her, and even Haji's mental awareness sharpened.

    “For your information, Stresser as that name because of her childhood,” he started. Ivy didn't like his tone, but before she could interrupt with an 'I don't need the life story', he told her anyway. The Ranger hated stories like this. It wasn't that she didn't care, it was that she cared too much. If she got too involved with every single Pokemon on a personal level like that, she'd never be able to do her job. Then even more Pokemon would suffer.

    Plus his tone bothered her. He acted like she had never gone through what he had, and it made her angry at his arrogance. She was a Ranger. She dealt with things like that on a regular basis. That's part of the reason she had signed up for the job. It was personal too, like Haji...

    “That time is long gone,” the Espeon said soothingly against her mind. She hadn't realized her fists had clenched as she thought of his own dark history, and she smoothed them out against her red vest. She could take comfort in the knowledge that nothing would ever happen to him again.

    The Trainer wasn't looking at her though, and she was glad. If he was in range she probably would've socked him. She understood him getting upset on his Pokemon's behalf, but didn't he just say that he was trying to be lighthearted with the Blaziken to help her get over her situation? Why the hell was he bitching? If he wanted to be that way, she could play his game. She tried to be friendly and relaxed on her runs so the Trainers wouldn't be nervous, but if he wanted absolute professional, she could do that too.

    She folded her arms over her chest and leaned back against Brin nonchalantly as she waited to see how the battle had turned out. During her inner monologue, he had ordered a fire attack and a throwing attack, if she remembered right.

    The Blaziken focused, and then she coated herself in fire. The technique wasn't being used to attack though, she found. Instead, the snow around the chicken started to melt rapidly, revealing the grayed dirt beneath. She'd have a lot better traction now. Water pooled in pockets on the ground, and the falling snow sizzled as it came into conflict with the Pokemon.

    The Scraggy stood transfixed at the flickering flames. He probably didn't see much fire up here on the cold mountain. Just standing there wasn't good for him, though. In the time the little fighter kept gawking, the Blaziken was tensing up. Then, she streaked across the battlefield toward the Scraggy, leaving a trail of exposed ground in her wake as the snow deteriorated.

    She slammed into the Dark-type, sending him sprawling through the snow. Following Jakk's command, she didn't stop to let him have a rest, though. She tried to get a hold on him, but he was lashing out in his momentary confusion. The Blaziken didn't really look like she minded, but it took a little extra energy to heave the yellow Pokemon up in the air.

    Then, the Fire-type hefted the other Pokemon down the trail she just made, sending him to the ground with a thunk. He then rolled down the slight incline, heading back to where Jakk was waiting. She saw him pull out a regular Park Ball and time his shot, throwing it when the Scraggy came into range.

    The device hit the Scraggy on his red-scaled stomach, and in a red beam of light, it sucked the Pokemon in. The Ball thrashed around as it dropped to the soil, fighting to break out. Ivy was a little surprised he had tried capturing the fighter so soon. It hadn't really looked that damaged yet, so it still had a lot of energy. Despite that, the device eventually stilled.

    Ivy was silent as she went to pick up the ball and pocket it, making sure it stayed secure in her vest. Then, she went back to the path. She glanced over her shoulder at the Trainer and said in her most formal tone, “If we're done here, let's carry on, Mr. Carter.”

    Then she started to walk up the jagged path without looking behind her. She figured Jakk could follow if he wanted. Haji was still beside her, and she could feel he was a little tense. That was a result of her, she figured, but she wasn't going to let go of her anger just yet, even if it was unprofessional. Brin could be heard sloshing behind her, so when she saw another Pokemon above the crest of the path, she wasn't worried.

    This was probably where all the snow was coming from, she thought. There was a large tree-like Pokemon standing in a cluster of rocks. Snow was whirling all around it, thanks to it's ability that let it be in touch with the snowstorms all the time. It had a shaggy white coat, but the ends of its limbs were a forest green, giving away its part plant status. Purple eyes stared back at them.

    Ivy waited for the rest of them to clear the slope, and then she stepped to the side and gestured to the Abomasnow. “It seems this is your next encounter.”

    OOC: Alright, time to finally DO this #gameface #boredinthecar #pokingfunativycoswhythehellnot

    ~~~~~
    Jakk grinned and pumped his fist into the air when he saw that the Scraggy had been successfully captured. Stresser's flames flickered and died, and she screeched loudly, informing the world of her victory. Nothing could ruin the good feeling that a successful Pokemon capture, he thought.
    “If we're done here, let's carry on, Mr. Carter," Ivy said in a flat voice.
    Good feelings gone. Jakk sighed and started to get upset at Ivy, but he decided that being upset was a waste of time. Just like how Ivy hadn't understood his feelings, he couldn't claim to fully understand hers. A rogue thought snuck into his head, and he grinned. If James was here, he would have accused her of being on her period, and she probably would have knocked him off the mountain.
    The Ranger had already started walking, along with her Conkeldurr and the Espeon. Jakk cracked his shoulders and returned Stresser to her PokeBall. Just like most Fire-types, she didn't enjoy being cold. Once the red light faded, Jakk started pushing through the snow, following in Ivy's frosty footsteps. Thankfully, he didn't have to stay there for long - Ivy located an Abomasnow standing amongst a pile of rocks, watching our strange little group cautiously. The snow fell much quicker near the Abomasnow, like it was frenzied, and Jakk remembered that this was because of its ability.
    “It seems this is your next encounter,” Ivy said coldly, stepping to one side.
    "No thanks," Jakk replied. "I'm just here for the Fighting-types." He wished that Ivy would just cool off already. She seemed cool and definitely was easy on the eyes, but he couldn't understand how James could possibly be interested in her if she flared up at little things like this.
    @ChainReaction01;
    NBP#9
    Ranger Ivy Frost
    ---
    Jakk replied a negative to her question, and she wasn't really surprised. Being a Fighting-type gym leader, he was only after those, although she suspected that he would make an exception if they came across something Jathan was looking for. The Breeder was the most timid of the trio of brothers.
    What bothered her the most was Jakk's nonchalance about everything. In fact, he was pretty much ignoring her and pretending he hadn't pissed her off royally back down the slop, and that ticked her off even more. It was a typical man thing to assume that nothing was wrong if they pretended it wasn't. That wasn't exactly fair of her, but she had found that men could get away with changing the subject abruptly without acknowledging the previous issue.
    She held onto her rage, because it was better than getting upset. She knew better to get friendly with any of her Trainers. In fact, she was loathing she had ever started that. Not only did it make her too attached to everyone she came across, but it made her seem more like a girl. That wasn't necessarily a horrible thing sometimes, but she hated being treated like just another girl. That usually resulted in others flirting like she was just another skirt. They had come a long way with gender stereotypes, but some things were still alive and well. She hated the assumption that she was sweet and compassionate to every little thing without any personality of her own.
    She had seen enough dark things and had been in just as many awful situations as the next person. She expected that eventually she would see something she wouldn't be able to come back from all the way. She wasn't going to let people chide her like she didn't understand. She had rescued Haji from his abusive situation too, only she had also suffered at the hands of his torturers quite literally.
    It usually took a lot to get her upset. She liked being laid back. Being angry just took up too much energy. Now she made the exception, though. For one, Jakk was being stupid. He had just said he wanted to make light of the Blaziken's situation, but it appeared that as soon as she did what he wanted, he started bitching. She couldn't allow emotions, good or bad, to get in the way of the job, however, so she was going to have to tough it out.
    The Ranger looked back toward the Abomasnow to see if it was going to let them pass. It was standing there peacefully, looking on at them like she imagined grandparents did. She didn't know for sure because she didn't have any.
    Before she could ask her question, she felt the air hum, and a flicker of energy warmed on the edge of her consciousness. Then, as she blinked, a tall green and white Pokemon appeared. Ivy just blinked at the Gallade. Why was Vergil here?
    Her anger aside for the moment, she took a minute to look at him. She could tell it was Vergil and not Chainy's Dual not just by his energy signature but by the way he held his arms crossed across his chest sullenly. He was also a couple inches shorter than her colleague's Pokemon, which she suspected aggravated Vergil even more.
    “Hey, Vergil,” she said, even as she felt Haji send his energy curiously over the Gallade. She spoke carefully since she could feel the anger rolling off of him too. What was he angry about now? With him, it was often hard to tell. It could've been anything. Since they had no telepathic link, she couldn't ask him. He wouldn't even talk to her mind-to-mind, and that was something she and Haji did even before they cemented that link.
    She felt the large Abomasnow shift behind her, and as she turned back, she saw it lumber off across the snowy plain. Usually the weather dissipated after those Pokemon that could initiate it left the area, but the sky remained a dark, murky gray, and she could see snow still lightly falling down.
    Vergil made some noise that brought her attention back to him, and she saw him gesturing at the sky. Since she couldn't read his thoughts, she had to resort to the normal way of communicating with Pokemon. She was glad she had some idea of what he was referring to, though, since they didn't have a close enough relationship for her to really understand him well. It was going to storm.
    “You're right,” she said, nodding. Before she could add anything else, an important-sounding beep went off on her phone. She looked down and hit one of the buttons by habit only to see a weather warning flash across the screen. “It's going to storm,” she said. “We're going to have to travel through the caves for a while.”
    To her surprise, Vergil stepped up next to her as she started to lead them toward the mountain, though he didn't look very happy about it. She returned Brin to his Pokeball so they didn't clog up the path. Besides, the big fighter had been working with her earlier in the day. He needed a rest.
    She brought them to the nearest cave just as the snow started to fall pretty heavily. The wind picked up too, making the snow howl as it tried to enter the passage. Ivy brushed the show off her vest and made sure everyone was accounted for before acknowledging the Pokemon watching them curiously from behind a boulder.
    The walls reflected a light coming from somewhere in light blues and soft pinks, like the crystals embedded in the walls were giving off their own shine. The caves were always beautiful, they were just dangerous. That gleam usually meant that the surfaces were icy, making it easy to slip and fall. The floor and walls here were no different. If Jakk wanted to battle, it could be tricky.
    “There's a Mienfoo there,” she said as she gestured the cream and fuchsia marsupial Pokemon. She didn't want to move until the Trainer made up his mind. She didn't want to fall.
    OOC: Male, please. Jakk is having enough woman trouble atm =P
    If there was one thing Jakk knew, it was Pokemon battling. He was incredibly good at it, especially in his gym. There was only one thing he was almost as good at, and that was reading people. It was a skill he deliberately cultivated as it gave him a silent advantage in his gym. Body language and posture could be more telling than anything else if you knew what you were doing. If a Trainer commanded a defensive move but he was clenching his fists, you could be sure he was planning a counterattack, and the appropriate response would be to wait the defense out, infuriating the Trainer.
    Of course, this ability was often just as useful off the battlefield. Jakk could tell by the way Ivy was stomping through the snow with her shoulders hunched that she was still incredibly pissed off about the earlier incident. A small sigh escaped from Jakk into the whirling snow - if she couldn't get over it he would have to apologise. Angry men punched you and made you bleed for a couple hours. Angry women lay silent for months before exacting an excruciating revenge on you at the exact moment it inconveniences you the most. Hell, for all Jakk knew, Ivy would take it out on James, and Jakk didn't want that. His imagination told him that she could give him bad assignments, or lock him in his office with mountains or paperwork, or perhaps simply clamp a boot around his genitals. If she hadn't already.
    Randomly, Jakk looked up and saw that there was a Gallade speaking to the Ranger. For a brief second, Jakk thought it was Dual - the two of them both got on well, seeing as Dual had spent some time training in the Veilstone Gym - but the body language of the Psychic-type told a different story. The Gallade was not pleased to be out here, but he was because he felt it was his duty. Duty was usually a big part of any Gallade's makeup - at least it was for Dual and Jakk's Gallade, and it appeared to be in this one too.
    Ivy turned back to address Jakk, and he could see in her eyes that his earlier assessment had been correct. “It's going to storm,” she informed the Gym Leader. “We're going to have to travel through the caves for a while.”
    Jakk nodded but the woman had already turned away. She returned the large Conkeldurr to his PokeBall (probably because the large Fighting-type wouldn't fit in any of the caves we'd be travelling through) and started following the Gallade as it forged easily through the snow. Jakk trudged sliently after them, deciding how best to apologise. Some women didn't accept them well, and some didn't care about the apology because they enjoyed being angry. Jakk hadn't spent enough time with Ivy to tell what kind of woman she was yet.
    The cave that they eventually entered was emitting a gentle blue light that was reflected by many crystals embedded in the cave walls. Jakk was glad to be inside - he had almost started getting cold, and he hated putting on jumpers.
    "There's a Mienfoo there," Ivy said suddenly, pointing towards a large rock. It took Jakk a couple seconds to see the little Pokemon - it was watching the group from behind the rock. There was no fear in the Fighting type's eyes - it was curious and one-by-one evaluating all of the people that had entered its domain. It wasn't happy to see the Gallade or the Espeon (no doubt because of their superior Psychic-typing) and there was a slight begrudging respect for the Ranger, but it couldn't decide what to think of the large, muscle-bound man that was staring openly right at it.
    "Alright, now we're talking!" Jakk grinned. "I've been wanting one of these guys for ages. You wouldn't believe how slow most of my Pokemon can be. A speedster would be a welcome addition to my Gym!"
    Jakk immediately started subconsciously evaluating the battlefield he had found himself in. The tunnel was of decent size, but there were slippery ice patches all over the place. Unfortunately, this derailed Jakk's initial preference. He didn't want to ask Stresser to battle again so soon, especially because of the friction between him and Ivy. Jugg hadn't had a chance to battle yet, but he was a physical fighter, and no matter how careful he was, sooner or later he'd make a mistake and slip up on the ice. While this wouldn't really matter battle-wise, Jakk didn't want to look stupid in front of Ivy, and he didn't want to subject his Machamp to any pain or embarrassment that could possibly be avoided. This only left one choice.
    "Alright Kai, come on out!" Jakk called as he threw the PokeBall containing his Electivire towards the Mienfoo. The large yellow beast emerged and rumbled a greeting. Interestingly, the Mienfoo still didn't show any fear, but neither did it prepare itself for battle. Maybe Jakk would have to push its buttons a little bit.
    "Start with a Taunt then set up a Reflect," Jakk commanded. "If the Mienfoo comes close, nail it with a Thunderpunch; otherwise, use a Thunderbolt."
    Kai grunted and started yawning. He stuck one of his giant black fingers into his ear and dug around for a few seconds before flicking some gunk towards the Mienfoo and grinning at it. Most Pokemon Taunted by utilizing some kind of battle cry. Kai was too old and calm to do anything like that, but he reasoned the whole point of a taunt was to piss the other Pokemon off. Few things could enrage an enemy than not taking them seriously and throwing earwax at them.
