I was flying through the air on the back of my Staraptor, Broadblade, on the way to the entrance of the Great Lakes. I had been assigned a Trainer there, and I was excited to get going.

Broadblade screeched, and I knew that we had arrived. He banked downwards violently, and just before we hit the ground flapped his giant wings, negating the fall. As he did so, he returned to his PokeBall, which we had found out was the easiest and best-looking way for me to dismount.

I walked over to the Trainer and shook his hand.

"Hey, my name is Chainy, and I'll be taking you through the Great Lakes," I said, shaking his hand.

I led him over to the Gate, where I pressed an intercom button.

"Ranger Chainy, going in," I spoke through the mesh.

Without a reply, the huge iron gates swung inward, revealing the Great Lakes in all their glory.

The Great Lakes were a strange assortment of water-bodies. Some were shallow and some were deep. Some were multi-level, and some even had saltwater, meaning they were connected to the ocean in some way. Most of them had beaches, but some you could only get into by diving.

We walked down the path, towards the docks.

"Do you want to walk around the edge of this lake, or get a boat across it?" I asked.

"Hey, my name is Chainy, and I'll be taking you through the Great Lakes," A man in a Ranger outfit said after landing on the ground from his Staraptor. He extended his hand for me to shake. I shook it and waited for him to say something else, but instead he walked us over to the gate. He pushed a button and spoke into the mesh, which in turn opened the gate.


I looked down to my Fire type Pokémon. I knew he wouldn’t like it here, but I couldn’t anywhere without him.

“Ready buddy?” I asked. He gave a nervous smile and nodded. The Ranger led us in and our adventure began. Chainy started by taking us to the docks.


"Do you want to walk around the edge of this lake, or get a boat across it?" he asked. I thought about this for a second. I really wanted Relicanthe, but I knew I’d have a better chance finding a Clamperl or two on the edge of the lake.

“I think the edge of the lake will be fine for now.” I said. The water looked calm and tempting; I almost wanted to jump in. “I might find what I want here.”

Cameron wanted to walk around the edge of the lake. I got the feeling he was looking for a Pokemon in particular, but he did not elaborate.

We walked around the edge of the main lake, enjoying the breeze. The path was made of compacted dirt, edged with slate-like stones. The dirt had been walked on so much that it was almost as hard as concrete.

We approached a small forest that was lying alongside the edge of the lake. For no particular reason, I saw movement out on the waves. Something was traveling very fast towards the forest. I used my eyepiece to zoom in, and I grinned as I saw what was coming.

It was a small blue Pokemon with two tails and a yellow head. The Legendary Pokemon Uxie.

I nudged Cameron and pointed to Uxie.

"That's a pretty eventful way to start an excursion," I commented.

I was looking for Clamperl when Chainy nudge me and pointed.

"That's a pretty eventful way to start an excursion," he said as I saw what he was pointing at. I recognized it right away, it was Uxie.

“Indeed!” I said, pulling out my camera and trying to focus in on it before it sped away. I clicked the button and the camera flashed. “If I get this picture that would be fantastic. I wish I could meet it, now that would be grand.” I waited eagerly to see the results of the Legendary Pokémon. I didn’t even know if I had got it on camera. While I waited for the picture to develop, I pulled out my small two by two Poképlayer and got my Clamperl voice disk out.

“If we go by the edge of the lake, we may find a Clamperl or two there.” I said, that is one thing I am looking for.

Cameron eagerly took a picture of the Uxie before it sped out of sight into the woods.

“If I get this picture that would be fantastic. I wish I could meet it, now that would be grand,” Cameron said excitedly.

While he waited to see if the picture was a success, he walked over to the edge of the lake. I wirelessly accessed the camera, and downloaded the last picture taken.

It was a good shot, with Uxie speeding across the water, etching out a little canal. Its two tails were almost straight behind it, testifying to the extreme speed at which it was traveling.

I smiled and didn't say anything: Cameron could look at it later.

Over at the edge of the water, Cameron pulled out a Pokeplayer. The little machine popped its lid and Cameron inserted a disc.

"Here's hoping some Clamperl come along," he said.

He pressed a button on the Pokeplayer, and the number readout on the machine changed from 5 to 4. The Pokeplayer also began emitting a strange, shrill, echoing cry.

Some bubbles began bubbling up to the surface of the water.

"Something's on its' way up," I said.

Slowly, a small, writhing form made its way upwards through the water. It broke through the surface of the lake, and swam over to use.

It was a Dratini. The small blue-and-white snake-like creature reached the edge of the lake, and looked up at us curiously.

"Well, it's not a Clamperl, but want it anyway?" I asked Cameron.

I saw some bubbles coming from the water. I was hoping it was going to be what I had come here for; I waited as patiently as I could for whatever it was to surface. Finally, after what seemed like forever, a small snake-looking Pokémon appeared.

"Well, it's not a Clamperl, but want it anyway?" He asked me. I didn’t answer him.

It was a Dratini, I knew how rare they were, especially here, but at this moment, I didn’t want one. I could catch it and sell it, but it looked so peaceful here. Who would want to take that away from this little guy? I tossed him some Pokefood I had and hoped it wouldn’t pursue us.

“Alright, let’s go!” I finally said to Chainy. “I don’t want to disturb it.” I kept my Clamperl voice disk on, hoping that I’d find one soon.

Cameron didn't want to take the Dratini from its natural habitat, so he decided to move on. We walked around the edge of the lake a little further. The weather was lovely, sunny but with a slight breeze so I didn't get too hot.

The Pokeplayer kept making the call, but the counter didn't decrease. That was when I saw that the Dratini was still following us.

"It's still here," I said to Cameron, pointing at the Dratini.

The Dratini made a giggling sound and began doing loops and circles in the water.

"If you want to try and escape it, I advise running to the woods," I commented. "It might not follow us onto dry land."

"It's still here," Chainy said to me, pointing back at the Dratini.

"If you want to try and escape it, I advise running to the woods," he stated. "It might not follow us onto dry land." I grabbed Mindbenders Pokéball from my pocket. I could scare it away, maybe paralyze it. I thought about this quickly because I didn’t want to spend any more time here. If I attacked it, It would feel wrong because all it wanted to do was play, but I didn’t want it following me. I looked at Chainy and nodded.

“Let’s go!” I said, hoping we’d find another edge to look in. I hoped that Dratini wouldn’t follow us anymore. If it came to it, I would throw a Pokedoll at it.

Quickly, before the Dratini could react, we legged it into the small forest. The Dratini made an eerie questioning sounds, and I heard splashing, but I didn't look back to see what was happening.

We ran maybe fifty metres back into the trees, so that we couldn't see the lake.

I hissed at Cameron, then put my finger to my lips, indicating silence.

We sat down against the base of some trees and listened carefully.

We didn't move for close to five minutes, but there were no sounds except the rustling of the leaves and the gentle splashes of the lakes. The Dratini hadn't followed us.

"Looks like it decided we weren't worth it," I said, helping Cameron up.

I then looked around, trying to pinpoint where we were.

"If I remember correctly, there's a deeper, saltwater lake up ahead," I told Cameron. "We could go check that out, or double back around to the main lake, your choice."

We ran through the forest , stopping at some trees. We didn’t go that far, but we went far enough that we couldn’t see the lake anymore. We were quietly waiting to see if the Dratini had followed us for almost five minutes. I hated being still for that long, but I had to in case the Dratini decided to follow us.

"Looks like it decided we weren't worth it," He said, I just shrugged.

"If I remember correctly, there's a deeper, saltwater lake up ahead," he told me. "We could go check that out, or double back around to the main lake, your choice."

“Hmm,” I sighed. I didn’t know where to go. I decided that it would be best to head to the deeper, saltier area, maybe I’d find a Relicanthe there. “Let’s go to the deeper lake, maybe we’ll get lucky and find a Relicanthe.”

Cameron decided to go to the deeper lake as he thought he might encounter a Relicanth there. It was solid thinking: Relicanth were ancient seafloor Pokemon, and there'd be a better chance of catching one in a saltwater lake.

We walked through the forest, and the air took on the unmistakeable tang of salt, signaling our arrival at the lake.

Just before we arrived, however, a bright red light shone at us from back in the woods. A mystical voice giggled, and the red light bounced up and down.

Mesprit flew out towards us, laughing and swinging its two tails around as it bobbed in the air. The red light was emanating from its red helmet.

"Wow, it's not often Mesprit approaches humans," I said in wonder.

"Wow, it's not often Mesprit approaches humans," Chainy said.

“Ain’t that the truth.” I said. “Its also not often that you see both Mespirit and Uxie, wonder why that is.” I raised my camera and snapped a picture of Mespirit. I wondered if I would also encounter Azelf… that would be extremely lucky. I continued watching the Mespirit as the picture developed. I was pretty sure this one was a good picture since it was right in front of me.

“Mespirit, show me where the Relicanthe are.” I asked, not expecting a reply, but it was worth a shot. “Is one at this lake?” I waited to see what would happen, the picture was also clearing up.

Mesprit struck a pose as Cameron took a photo of it. It moved to over Cameron's shoulder, where it watched the photo developing.

Cameron turned and asked Mesprit if there were any Relicanthe at the lake near here. Mesprit shook its head a little sadly, but then it touched both me and Cameron on our shoulders.

Red light flared around us, and I felt like I was being pulled belly-first through a river of mud. When the flash cleared, we were at the edge of a lake that had a covering of mist.

Mesprit made its strange echoing laugh, and then it flew over the lake really fast. It's red light dwindled from a fire to speck to nothing.

"Lovely," I grumbled. I hated it when I was teleported by anything but Dual. I pulled up a holographic map, and I saw that we were on the opposite side of the Great Lakes from where we were.

"Well, wherever we're going, we've got a long trek," I said with a sigh.

As I spoke, a wooden rowboat floated out of the mist, and it gently bumped against the edge of the lake.

I hated it when mysterious stuff like this happened. I really hoped Cameron didn't choose to go out on the lake.

As if to echo my sentiments, Cameron's PokePlayer made a quavering beep as its' counter dropped from 4 to 3.

Mespirit shook its head, then teleported us somewhere. I was already used to being teleported since that was mainly how I traveled thanks to Mindbender. I was kind of disappointed that Mespirit teleported us away from the place I wanted to go to, but perhaps there was a reason for it. Chainy told me that we were on the opposite side of the Great Lakes, but I didn’t know whether to be happy or not.

"Well, wherever we're going, we've got a long trek," he said sighing.

A rowboat appeared out of thin air and magically came towards us. It was so tempting, but I decided to press my luck out on the ground, searching near the banks. Shadow saw me looking at the boat and whimpered. I knew he didn’t want to go.

“I’d rather not take that, Shadow isn’t comfortable with it.” I said, hoping we could continue on land. I could hear my Pokeplayer still playing. I hoped that soon I’d find a Clamperl, one of them would be nice in my collection.

Cameron decided against using the boat to my eternal relief.

"Shadow isn't comfortable with it," he explained.

I was impressed by the way he took his Pokemon's feelings into consideration, perhaps even more so that his own.

We continued around the bank of the lake, slowly getting wet, courtesy of the mist. The Clamperl cries continued to echo across the lake, almost lonely in some ways. I personally believed that there was no way that there was any Clamperls or Relicanths here: this lake was a fresh-water lake, in one of the highest areas of the Great Lakes. But Mesprit must have brought us here for a reason.

Suddenly, I heard splashing. I looked out to the lake, and I saw something being drawn to us by the Pokeplayer noise.

It was a Goldeen.

The orange and white fish almost seemed to dance through the water as opposed to swim. Its beauty was almost transfixing.

"Wanna try catching that Goldeen?" I asked Cameron.

"Wanna try catching that Goldeen?" He asked me. I watched the fish jump out of the water and dive back in. I had to admit, this Goldeen was quite beautiful. I knew Goldeen looked like this, but this one seemed different. I had wanted a Goldeen, but at this moment, I didn’t want to be bothered by it.

“No, I want to avoid it.” I said as I pulled out a Pokedoll and placed it close to the Goldeen. “I don’t want to spend any more time here. I really hoped that I found what I wanted, if not something worthwhile. I didn’t really see time as something you waste, just something you learn from. So far I’ve learned that Clamperl weren’t as common as I thought they would be, and that I attracted Legendary Pokémon.

“How about you take me somewhere you think I’d find something interesting?” I asked Chainy. I didn’t really know where to go, which was another thing I learned, learn the layout of the Great Lakes and which Pokémon are commonly found where.

Cameron watched the Goldeen dance with me for a while, before placing a PokeDoll in the water.

He explained to me that he didn't want the Goldeen, but he didn't mind seeing it as he felt that nothing was truly a waste of his time.

I thought that was a very mature attitude as we watched the Goldeen grab the tail of the doll with its small mouth and swim away.

It certainly wasn't my attitude, however.

“How about you take me somewhere you think I’d find something interesting?” Cameron asked me.

I was glad he asked me, as I wasn't really comfortable in this particular locale.

I pulled out a PokeBall and summoned Dual, my Gallade.

"Dual, take us to that small pond over on the east side. You know, where all the mutli-type Pokemon like to gather," I suggested.

Dual nodded, and he flashed a bright blue. This teleportation I preferred, it felt more like both shoulders being grasped by a giant, and then being lifted into the air.

When the blue flash disappeared, I saw we were at the lake I had suggested. We were back on the lowlands, at a freshwater lake that lots of dual-typed Water Pokemon liked to gather at. At the south end of the lake a river flowed into the distance, and I knew that river would eventually link up with the main lake we saw at the beginning.

"Good job, Dual," I said, returning him.

As I did so, Cameron's Pokeplayer's display went from 3 to 2, and it began the Clamperl call all over again.

There was a small series of splashes over by the edge of the lake. I crossed over to it, and there was a small Chinchou trapped underneath a root.

It saddened me to see the little electric fish stuck, but this was the circle of life and as a Ranger I couldn't interfere. The Trainer, however, could.

Chainy didn’t waste any time, he pulled out a Pokéball and sent out a Pokémon of his own. It was a Gallede, the male version of Gardevoir. The Gallede teleported us to a new location, which I had hoped we would have more luck that we did here.

I saw that we had arrived at another lake, which wasn’t surprising. I knew that I would encounter something good soon, but not at this moment. We heard several splashed coming from the edge of the lake. I knew it couldn’t be Clamperl since they didn’t move a lot, but Chainy decided to check it out.

We saw a small, baby-looking Chinchou trapped underneath a root. I looked over to Chainy for a few seconds, waiting for him to do something, but then I remembered they had some rules with being a Ranger. My older brother Leo was a Ranger here which reminded me of their rules on leaving nature the way it is. I didn’t understand it, but I respected it. I pulled out Mindbenders Pokéball and with a swift movement of my hand, tossed the ball in front of me. A magnificent green humanoid Psychic Pokémon appeared from the Pokéball. Her elegant ballroom looking gown swayed gracefully from side to side as she waited for me to instruct her.

“Mindbender, can you lift the root up from the ground without hurting the Chinchou or the tree?” I asked, knowing that it could, but I always wanted them to tell me if they could or not.

She nodded as she swayed her hands back and forth until they began glowing. The root slowly lifted from the ground and the Chinchou was set free.

“Run along now!” I said to the Chinchou, knowing it would want to reunite itself with its friends and family.

Leo released a Gardevoir from a PokeBall and asked it to help out the Chinchou. It psychically lifted the root, and the Chinchou was able to escape. It released a small set of sparks into the air, and it swam off in search of its' family. As it did so, the Pokeplayer's display changed from 2 to 1.

I was happy that Cameron had decided to help out the Chinchou, I was have been sad to see a Sharpedo or a Staraptor or something eat it.

We continued along the edge of the lake. The edge turned from a shallow cliff into a beach, albeit one made of dirt, not sand.

Laying in the middle of the dirt was a large Whiscash. The blue Mud Fish Pokemon looked at us with one large eye.

"Feel like a Whiscash?" I asked Cameron.

We kept walking until we came across another Pokemon that was not on my list on Pokemon to catch. This land fish Pokemon was laying on the path. It appeared to be relaxed which seemed nice. I wanted to relax, but sadly there was just too much to do so I couldn’t spend much time here. If anything, I hoped something like maybe a Staryu or Horsea came along, I knew a friend who could use one. I just wanted to take something home with me.

"Feel like a Whiscash?" He asked me.

"Nope, not really!" I said, placing a Pokedoll on the ground as close to it as possible. "Let's keep going, I'm sure I'll find something I want eventually, if not then I guess I'll just have to come again and be more prepared." I just hoped that I would find it soon, otherwise I’d have to come back and go do this again.
