    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ataro the Ambipom got up, but it was with a struggle. Since he had just fought against the Illumise not too long ago, this additional battle was taking its toll on him. Sudowoodo were defensive as well, which required the monkey to hit harder to do as much damage as he normally wood. If he took too many more hits in retaliation, though, the Trainer might have to swap him out for his other battler. Ivy couldn't tell for sure yet.

“Okay, Ataro,” the Trainer said, “attack Sudowoodo with Dig. When you emerge from the ground, strike it with a Thunder Wave as well!”

The electrical attack that Ataro had used many times before would again try to slow the wild Pokemon down. She didn't know how effective it would really be, though, since the Rock-type was already on the slower-moving end of the spectrum. He probably knew very well how to battle like that.

With haste, the purple monkey got to work, scooping out the dirt from the hole he had started with his hands and tails. He sunk rapidly into the earth, burrowing under the ground and disappearing out of sight. Before, this same technique hadn't worked against the bug he captured. Maybe this time it would be different.

The Rock-type peered curiously at the place where the monkey had disappeared. He tilted his head and then formed a smile. He clapped his foliage-tipped arms together and started moving around. Ivy took that as a sign that he recognized what his foe was doing. If she remembered correctly, the fake tree could learn the same technique, so maybe that's how he knew.

The tree then began stomping around, and even though it was happily, the ground was shaking a little, sending small tremors across the dirt. For an instant, Ivy had that heart-stopping moment when she thought the Sudowoodo was going to use Earthquake. While Ataro the Ambipom was under the ground, that technique would be devastating.

A flicker of that intent flashed across the Rock-type's face, and Ivy grimaced. Then, the fake tree went still. The Ranger was still tense as the wild Pokemon concentrated, waiting to see if he would attack or not. Instead, he simply focused. He even shut his eyes. She wondered, could he be sensing where the Ambipom was underground?

The tree had drifted toward the tree stump as he was stomping so that he was next to it. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open. The ground began to shake, but it wasn't from the tree. As the ground below him erupted, the Sudowoodo jumped up, aiming to get on top of the stump.

The Ambipom came barreling upward out of the ground. He managed to knock into the tree a little, but since he was close to the stump, he couldn't get directly under him or risk ramming into the roots underground instead and getting stuck. The Sudowoodo's plan had worked out.

However, the monkey's ascent wasn't quite graceful. A force from under the ground seemed to be propelling him—something that wasn't part of his Dig attack. The fake tree danced and cheered from atop his stump, so Ivy assumed he was the cause of it. The technique looked like an Earth Power. The Ambipom went sprawling, unable to control his flight, and came crashing to the ground again. It was better than an Earthquake, at least.

The monkey wasn't done, however. His tails twitched and shuffled back and forth as he created an electric current. He couldn't just fire the wave, though. The Sudowoodo had jumped back down on the other side of the stump, putting it between them. That meant the purple primate had to get closer.

He ran for the Rock-type, jumping up on the stump to have direct access. Then, he fired off the electrical status attack. Coils of shocking energy surrounded the fake tree, and Ivy heard him grunt. Then, he looked at the miniature thunderbolts surrounding him and got a cheery smile.

The foliage on the trips of his arms suddenly bursted with their own electricity, and before the Ambipom could move away, Sudowoodo lashed out with a fierce punch. It knocked Ataro clear off the stump and onto the ground on the other side. A Thunder Punch. It seemed he was still mimicking what the monkey was doing, just not directly.

At his victory, the fake tree did a little dance in a circle, clearly having a good time. Even though the Ambipom had insulted him with his battle style after being so nice to it, the Sudowoodo was determined to stay in good spirits. He was just going to attack harder in retaliation.

Ataro didn't look so good after those last two attacks. His strength was waning, and the Rock-type didn't seem to be struggling quite so much yet. His Trainer was going to have to think of something good in order to defeat this high-spirited foe.

Ataro began to burrow underneath the soil after punching it with his tail. I guessed it was to soften the ground to make it easier for burrowing. We haven't used Dig for a very long while after all. Other than the one that we had used against Illumise just now, we had probably last used Dig two years ago. As he disappeared from sight quickly, the Sudowoodo looked around curiously. The expression of confusion and lost soon disappeared however, and they were replaced with a grin.

Given Sudowoodo's traits, it was possible that it could detect Ataro's presence underground. Regardless, even if Ataro had missed his attack, that didn't matter, for inflicting a status on Sudowoodo was our objective now. Even though he is slow by nature, the paralysis status will still increase the chances of a successful capture. Pokemon in the National Park were also governed by a special aspect in that the wild Pokemon has to be calm to an extent before you can capture it. They usually become calmer the longer they battle you, and there were fragrances that were able to help you do this as well. Thus, rarer Pokemon typically take longer to capture.

I started to wonder about the duration of the battle and it didn't seemed like it was that long. Sudowoodo was looking pretty unsettled still anyway. Luckily, I had bought one of the fragrances and this was one of those times where you definitely had to use one.

At this moment, Ataro had burrowed out of the ground suddenly and only managed to barely strike Sudowoodo by the side. He had stood on the stump again, and it was definitely getting in the way of my attacks. As Ataro prepared to land back on the ground, he couldn't help but scramble around and fell onto the ground roughly. I wasn't sure what attack that was, but it was definitely not Earthquake. If it was Earthquake, Ataro would have been damaged much more, since Earthquake would have dealt double the damage to a Pokemon that was underground.

I knew that attack was considered nothing to Ataro however. With a quick twitch of his tails, an electrical current was promptly charged. Upon noticing this, Sudowoodo quickly jumped down the stump and got behind it again. The stump again... I probably should have just destroyed that annoying piece of crap with a Brick Break. Ataro was not as bothered as I was though. He ran swiftly and landed on top of the stump, and fired the Thunder Wave straight at a defenseless Sudowoodo.

As he reappeared by standing straight up, I noticed that he was grinning once again. He was definitely an optimistic Pokemon... The foliage of his arms suddenly burst with electricity and just as Ataro and I had realized what was going to happen, the Sudowoodo landed a fierce Thunderpunch on Ataro. While Ataro was pushed back by that attack, Sudowoodo continued to dance around happily. Compared to Sudowoodo, Ataro was much more exhausted. Times like this, we had no other choice. I really didn't want to send in Fataro, since I had promised Sudowoodo a fight with Ataro. I'm not quite sure what would happen if I had send in Fataro, but there was a good chance that Sudowoodo wasn't going to be happy at all.

"Ataro, you have had a good fight. I want you to recover all of your health with Rest right away. When you're sleeping, strike Sudowoodo with your Snore!"

We were getting closer and closer to a capture. I had decided not to risk a turn, since Ataro could be knocked out in just another hit. Rather, Rest would help him to become healthy again and I get to weaken Sudowoodo with Snore as well. I had needed to use my Calming Fragrance Plus soon too...

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The battle was close. Both Pokemon were trying their hardest to win, which always made for an entertaining fight. They were both looking low on energy, however. Sudowoodo was handling it better, keeping his jolly spirits up as he danced back and forth, waiting for his foe. Ataro, on the other hand, wasn't so well off. He had just fought against the Illumise before this, and the Rock-type's counterattacks were really taking their toll on the monkey.

His Trainer seemed to realize this too. He didn't make any moves to switch out though, which puzzled Ivy. Fataro was still in good shape and would easily be able to relieve her partner. For whatever reason, he didn't. Instead, he said, “Ataro, you have had a good fight. I want you to recover all of your health with Rest right away. When you're sleeping, strike Sudowoodo with your Snore!”

The Ranger wasn't sure what she thought of Ataro's plan. It wasn't very practical to leave a Pokemon defenseless like that on the field for an extended period of time, since Rest had a bit of time lapse between use and waking. Even with some techniques like Snore or Sleep Talk, they didn’t always work out. Sometimes the Pokemon fell into a deep enough slumber that they forgot or were unable to do anything but rest while their opponent attacked them.

Still, that's what he was going with. Ataro the Ambipom prepared to relax and curl up, but the Sudowoodo caught on to what was happening. Before he could fall asleep, the Rock-type made a screeching noise and jumped up and down. He put his tree-like limbs to his head and waved them around his ears while sticking out his tongue, just like the monkey had done earlier. In fact, it was almost identical, which would make sense considering the fake tree loved to copy others.

The Taunt, however, sparked something in the Ambipom. Instead of laying down to rest, he screeched back at the Rock-type, worked up by the Sudowoodo egging him on. Just like the monkey, the tree had taunted him into attacking.

The Sudowoodo seemed pleased with his work, clapping his foliage-tipped hands together again. Then, he picked up two small rocks and hurled them at Ataro. He monkey dodged underneath the first one, but in doing so, didn't see the second. It bonked him on the head and caused the purple primate to rub his head.

They had only been about softball-sized rocks, so they didn't look like they hurt too bad. The real purpose of them was a distraction, as the Sudowoodo used Ataro's moment of recovery to spin in place. He then sunk into the earth, using a Dig technique just like Ataro had earlier.

As the Rock-type disappeared, he left Ataro jerking his head back and forth looking for him. While the Sudowoodo hadn't done much damage at all, he had prevented Ataro from healing himself and was now buried underground. The tension grew as they all wondered where the fake tree would pop out at.

Ataro had a choice to make now. He couldn't use a healing item in battle like this—such conduct was considered unfair to the wild Pokemon so it wasn't allowed. He could've healed Ataro before the battle, and he could still do so afterward, but that wouldn't help him right now.

The Sudowoodo would need to be worn down a lot more before he was easily captured, but first, they had to find him.

As Ataro was began to curl up his tail to prepare for sleep, the Sudowoodo started to make a deafening screech. I had jumped up at the sudden noise disturbance, while the Sudowoodo started to wave his arms around wildly. At the same time, he began to stick out his tongue and Ataro was definitely not going to fall asleep at this rate.

I assumed it was Uproar, but Ataro started to get worked up instead. He was visibly annoyed and started to screech back at the Sudowoodo while frowning. That was when it had struck me that Ataro's opponent had used Taunt. This move's effect had the ability to prevent the target from using non-attacking moves as it essentially angers the target into using attacking moves instead.

As if not annoyingly taunting us enough, the tree-like Pokemon began to clap his bushy-covered hands together, before picking up two small rocks and hurling them at Ataro. "Watch out!" I thought, as Ataro managed to dodge the first rock by a close distance, but got hit by the second one instead. Rubbing his head to soothe the pain from the throw, I had gathered that Ataro was definitely most not happy now.

Not wasting any time, the Sudowoodo jumped and pushed itself into the ground with a Dig, disappearing from our sight once again. Ataro started to look around frantically. I could only wish Ataro could stay calm, but it was going to be very difficult now. Ataro was at a very low health and especially after being on the receiving end of a Taunt, it wasn't going to be easy for Ataro to remain calm.

"Ataro, c'mon! Regain your composure! Stay calm, we've got this! Direct a Water Pulse into the very hole that Sudowoodo has dug. We will force it out with a super effective attack. Once it shoots out, encase yourself with a spherical Protect!"

It was going to be hard to predict where Sudowoodo would come up from, but using Water Pulse would force it to escape from underground. It was also highly possible that Water Pulse would damage him in the process too. I could only hope Ataro's Protect would be fast enough to shield him from an oncoming attack from Sudowoodo. Meanwhile, I grabbed the Calming Fragrance Plus from my bag and prepared to spray the fragrance once Ambipom had got his Protect up.

@Ataro; Fun Fact: In the Park, Rest doesn't heal you to full until you've slept off both turns and wake up, so that was the main reason why I didn't have it work in the last post, if you were wondering.

    BP#15

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ataro the Ambipom looked around the field frantically for where his opponent had gone. The ground rumbled now and then, but other than that, it was too hard to tell where the Rock-type was underneath the earth without using some sort of tracking psychic ability. Ivy was pretty sure Haji knew where the wild Pokemon was, but that would be cheating to give it away.

The Trainer was getting a little nervous too. He called out to calm his Pokemon. “Ataro, c'mon! Regain your composure! Stay calm, we've got this!” The encouragement seemed to help a little, as the purple monkey had stopped looking so paranoid. He was still focused on the field, however. Then the Trainer added, “Direct a Water Pulse into the very hole that Sudowoodo has dug. We will force it out with a super-effective attack. Once it shoots out, encase yourself with a spherical Protect!”

The Ranger was a little confused by his request. It wasn't likely that the Sudowoodo would come out the same hole he dug into the ground with, and she didn't think the monkey would be able to generate enough water to flood all the tunnels that could exist down there, both from the Rock-type and the natural pores in the soil. It would probably soak up fast, considering there wasn't any natural water around to help the Ambipom out.

The Trainer was already working on something else, however. She saw him pull out a bottle from his pack—a fragrance. The manufactured scents often made Pokemon more pliable and relaxed them, thus making them easier to capture. She recognized the sweet scent as one of the stronger and more-potent formulas.

The monkey, eager to do what his Trainer had asked, rushed over to the hole the Sudowoodo had first dug. With a twitch of his tails, he concentrated and summoned a wobbly orb of water. With a cry, he let it rain down into the hole in watery rings, each one sailing down in a rhythmic timing. The Ambipom was focused on attacking the rock.

The ground wobbled then, and before Ivy could call out a warning, the Sudowoodo burst from the earth near the purple monkey, knocking into him from below and causing the Ambipom to fall over with a thud. The Rock-type moved quicker than the Ranger thought. Ataro wasn't able to put up his Protect in time, likely because he was still under the mindset of the Taunt. He lurched his body to throw the remains of his water attack onto the fake tree, which caused the Sudowoodo to leap to the side. Thankfully, the water had brushed one of his arms before he got out of the way.

The Sudowoodo gained some distance then, backing up from the hole. The ground wobbled again, but instead of an Earthquake, Ivy saw the soil ripple, like there was a wave living underneath it. The Sudowoodo looked pretty concentrated, his eyes stuck to the monkey as the ground responded to his energy. He hadn't unleashed the attack yet, but he would very soon.

Ataro was going to have to be careful. His Pokemon was getting dangerously low on health, and even though Ivy could smell the scent of his fragrance thickly on the air, she didn't think the Sudowoodo would be able to be caught just yet. He still had a lot of fight left in him, and if the Trainer wasn't careful, it could end up knocking the monkey out.
