Individual RP: Ataro

OOC: Sorry this took so long to get up, I've been sick the past several days and my energy/motivation levels have practically been in the negatives.

I have to admit, Ataro had set up a pretty nifty little combo to make the best of a bad situation. He stayed calm despite the shrill screams Minccino had released and was getting ready to start belting out once more, ordering Lopunny to reflect the chinchilla’s own strength back at it via a Mirror Coat. Once that was accomplished, Lopunny would focus the discomfort and annoyance with the whole thing and unleash it in one powerful blow. Normally Frustration tended to take its power from a Pokemon disliking its Trainer, so it was nice to see Lopunny’s ire would be directed at her foe rather than Ataro.

Lopunny inched closer to Minccino as a faint purple glow began to emanate from her body, quickly growing in strength and intensity until a pulsing fuchsia wall burst into existence in front of her, curving along the edges to offer slight protection to her sides and above her. Just as her Mirror Coat was erected, Minccino threw her head back and started to shriek again. Her crying was louder this time, now that she had a lungful of air to put towards her attack, and Lopunny visibly flinched behind her shield. Mirror Coat absorbed the special energy of a foe’s attack and added power to it, before reflecting it back at the enemy. Unfortunately, the force of an attack striking the shield still caused damage to the user, so Lopunny wasn’t exactly protected by her Mirror Coat.

It took several seconds for Minccino’s breath to run out, but when she finally fell quiet, Lopunny threw her arms forward. The rosy shield in front of her gave a particularly large pulse, and at the same moment it turned a sort of off-white hue before releasing a blast of energy. The backlash of it caused Lopunny’s ears and fur to toss about, but she seemed not to notice as she leapt forward after her attack, the shield fizzling away within moments. She threw her head back and then jerked it forward and down, bashing her long ears into the sphere of energy and giving it greater force and momentum with her Frustration. When she landed, she struck a bit of a pose while the Mirror Coat’s blast careened into Minccino, knocking the little chinchilla away and sending her tumbling. She rolled several feet before coming to a dazed stop. I heard Psi chuckle a little, but he thankfully refrained from sharing whatever he was thinking.

“Looks like you’ve got this thing in the bag,” I commented as Minccino slowly managed to climb to her paws, blinking sluggishly and looking pretty worn out. “Still, I’d be careful, since there’s a good chance she’s not ready to give up yet.”

OOC: Yeah I guessed so, it's alright!

Just as Lopunny finished erecting her barrier, the Minccino decided to let out her second cry, she was too late however. The Mirror Coat took the attack and absorbed it. Lopunny started to take in deep breaths at the same time, for she must have still taken some side damage from the attack through the barrier. It was still alright however, considering that we would later do much more damage to our foe.

It took a while before Minccino finally stopped, but once she was done, Lopunny ran towards her with fists glowing in white spheres of energy. Once she was near enough, she struck her head and pounded the blast of reverse energy from Mirror Coat that was in front of her. She slammed the energy force with vengeance, striking with whatever possible methods there were, mostly using her fists and ears. The glowing white force of energy briefly vibrated for a moment, before blasting towards Minccino at full force, after receiving the boost from Frustrarion.

“Looks like you’ve got this thing in the bag,” my ranger commented as Minccino slowly managed to climb to her paws. She had obviously received lots of damage and it was about time for a capture. “Still, I’d be careful, since there’s a good chance she’s not ready to give up yet.”

I nodded to acknowledge what my ranger had advised. True enough, there was probably a very good chance of a successful capture, but I liked to maximize my chances. Seeing as the Minccino could still be weakened further, I decided to call for another attack. "Lopunny, strike it with another Quick Attack, but be sure not to knock it out."

I grabbed a Park Ball from my camera bag and enlarged it by depressing the middle button. I waited for Lopunny's attack to connect before throwing my capture device.

It seemed Ataro was taking no chances. Even though Minccino most likely didn’t have the energy to escape from a ParkBall in her current condition, the Trainer wanted to make sure she was worn out enough that she couldn’t resist capture. The final command of the battle, so long as everything went according to plan anyways, was a Quick Attack to chip away at the precious little stamina Minccino had left. Lopunny was swift in executing the maneuver, seeming to blink in and out of sight as she employed her impressive speed to baffle the smaller Pokemon, who was clearly still stunned if her sluggish reactions were any indication.

Just when it seemed Lopunny would simply dart back and forth until Minccino was overwhelmed by dizziness, the rabbit darted towards her foe and twisted her head to the side. The sharp motion caused her ears to whip around with an incredible amount of momentum, resulting in a blow that would have sent Minccino rolling once again. Would being the keyword here, since, seemingly as a last effort at defiance, Minccino shook her head and flung herself recklessly at Lopunny at the same time the rabbit lunged forward. The chinchilla’s bodily tackle hit Lopunny perhaps not even a second before Lopunny’s Quick Attack made contact, resulting in both Pokemon getting thrown back. Lopunny, unlike Minccino, managed to land on her paws and stay upright; Minccino hit the ground in a furry, dazed heap and made no further efforts at trying to continue the battle.

It was at this point that Ataro threw the ParkBall he’d taken out. It bounced off Minccino’s right side and released a flood of red light, engulfing the little creature and drawing it inside. The Ball then rocked once, so faintly it almost wasn’t visible, before falling still as the indicator light built into the expander button went out. I smiled and clapped my hands as I went to retrieve the Ball, stowing it safely in my hip pack before turning to face my Trainer.

“Done and done! Minccino was pretty tuckered out at the end there, she didn’t even really try getting out. At any rate, do you want to continue, take a break, or end your run now?”

As Lopunny swiftly executed her Quick Attack, the Minccino somehow managed to squeeze in an attack herself, tackling Lopunny as a last act of defiance. I couldn't really recognize what type of attack that was, but it was similar to a Tackle attack, albeit stronger. Regardless, this does not matter. I grabbed the Park Ball tighter and threw it at the Minccino with a Ash Ketchum pose.

The familiar red light emerged from the capture device and engulfed the wild Pokemon within, before closing shut again. It briefly shook once before securing tight - it was a perfect capture. My ranger walked over and collected the Park Ball, since trainers did not get access to their caught Pokemon immediately, and the rangers would keep them for you until the Park run is over.

"Done and done! Minccino was pretty tuckered out at the end there, she didn’t even really try getting out. At any rate, do you want to continue, take a break, or end your run now?" my ranger asked.

I thought about it for a while. I have been in the Botanic Gardens for quite some time now, but I have only captured one Pokemon. I had really wanted to maximize my available chances here so I decided that it really would not hurt to continue staying around, to see what else are there to capture.

"I think we can carry on. I really want to capture more Pokemon before leaving the Park," I replied. "Maximize my chances ... and money spent, y'know. But if I see nothing interesting pop out soon, maybe I will leave and come back to try again for Castform!"

I nodded when Ataro opted to continue with his run. There was a chance we might run into something else he’d be interested in, like had happened w/ Minccino. Psi stood from where he’d been sitting and stretched, taking the lead without a word. I was surprised he’d been quiet all this time, and just a little worried. Hopefully the Espeon wasn’t planning his next prank or something, and was simply behaving for once.

We headed off, Psi once more taking the lead, and walked in a vaguely north direction. I heard a faint rumble and frowned, glancing up. The clouds had darkened a bit more, and even though the thunder was far away, storms could move in deceptively fast. With any luck we’d get the last several encounters finished before the sky decided to open up on us.

My musing was interrupted by the sight of a round, pink creature standing near a tree several yards to the left and in front of us. I paused for a moment, soon realizing the creature was a Chansey. The Pokemon had her back to us at the moment and seemed to be focused on something up in the trees branches. I glanced at Ataro and motioned towards the popular PokeCenter assistant.

“It’s rare to see a Chansey out in the open like this. They usually stay near the little groves and caves. At any rate, do you wanna try for a capture or should we try moving on?”

We headed off in a vaguely north direction and we spotted a familiar chubby pink Pokemon standing next to a tree. It seemed to be studying the tree. My ranger noted that Chansey usually didn't stay around here and it was rare to see one here. I nodded in response before replying, "I think I will get another picture here."

Usually, I would attempt to capture Pokemon like Chansey because they are rather rare and some people would pay high prices for them, but I was feeling particularly lazy to capture a captured Pokemon now. A picture wouldn't hurt to add yet another one to my collection of photos that are gathered during this trip. I took my camera and snapped a pose of the Chansey studying the tree seriously.

Ataro decided to pass up the Chansey, pausing just long enough to take a quick photo of it. The sudden flash and whirring of the camera startled the round Pokemon, which turned to face us with a startled little cry. She blinked a few times before abruptly glancing back up into the tree’s limbs; after a few more seconds she hastily waddled off. I watched her go, then headed over to the tree myself to see what had her so interested. I’d noticed, when she’d turned around, that the egg normally held in a Chansey’s pouch was absent in hers. Sure enough, after a bit of looking I saw a small bird perched on a branch not too far up, pecking at a small white egg with its beak. It was a Starly, and apparently the Chansey we’d just watched leave had given her egg to it. The little bird stared down at me as it pecked at the egg, clearly enjoying its meal.

“Well, it seemed Chansey was just giving out food,” I told Ataro as I looked down at him. “There’s a Starly over here eating a bit of egg, though I don’t know how interested you’d be in trying to catch one. A Starly, I mean, not an egg.” At this Psi let out a snort but remained silent. I shot the Espeon a look, still worried he might be up to something thanks to how quiet he’d been ever since Ataro had started to battle Minccino.

As the Chansey turned around, we had noticed that the usual egg in Chansey's pouch was missing. I wasn't sure why but a part of me was definitely more scared than curious. I started to think about the worst possible consequences, and my questions were soon answered with a chirp from the Starly that was sitting on the branches above.

The Starly was feasting on an egg happily and I started to wonder about the horrors of a bird Pokemon snatching Chansey's egg to eat. Except ... wait. Chansey was smiling. I always seemed to forget the egg was not an egg in the sense of Pokemon or human, but rather just an egg. Like scrambled egg. I shook my head to clear my head out of the severe confusion and bizarreness that I had just imagined and managed to cough out a "Let's move on." I was severely disturbed.

For some reason, Ataro adopted a rather aghast expression upon spotting Starly eating the egg it had been given by Chansey. His voice was a bit strangled when he said he wanted to keep going, and I wondered if maybe he’d had a bad experience with one of the birds or its evolutions in the past. There really wasn’t any other reason I could think of that he’d react in such a manner.

’Maybe he’s imagining a giant flock of Starly just descending upon the Park and attacking everyone like in that one Hitchcock movie,’ I thought, trying not to chuckle at the idea of crazy little Starly flying into random Park visitors. I didn’t know why, it was just a rather amusing mental image. I shook my head and started to walk away from the tree, meaning to lead Ataro on through the Gardens, but a loud chirrup and the sound of flapping wings made me stop and look back.

Starly was either curious about us or something about Ataro had caught its interest, because it had abandoned the egg Chansey had given it and was now flying circles above Ataro’s head. I lowered my gaze to the Trainer and raised an eyebrow.

“Looks like we might not get away from the little guy that easily. Whaddaya wanna do?”

The Starly seemed to have thought otherwise however. It was no longer concentrating on the egg that Chansey had gave it, but rather started to take off the branch and fly around in circles above my head. The wild Pokemon did not seemed to be hostile or anything similar, but was rather just interested in a battle.

Out of the earlier shock, or should I say trauma, with the incident of eating the egg, I seemed to have forgotten to prepare a PokeDoll just in case the Starly didn't want to let us escape that easily. The thought of Starly eating an egg, just makes me think that it is feeding on a Happiny instead. That is just gruesome.

I shook my head again, and picked out a PokeDoll from my bag before throwing it towards the Starly. Hopefully it would ignore us now.

Ataro didn’t say anything in response to my question, instead tossing down a PokeDoll to distract Starly with when the little bird refused to be one its way. It poked the Doll with its beak, then chirped and picked it up before returning to the tree with the egg it had left behind. Once it was gone, I turned to face Ataro, only to notice a small group of large green Pokemon moving in from the right. It was a herd of Meganium, passing by on their way to the nearest pond to get something to drink, most likely.

“You gonna be okay?” I asked, not wanting to continue the run if the run-in with the Starly was going to bother him so much. “If you want to keep going, there’s a little group of Meganium moving past not far away, or we could look for something else. Or we can end your run if you’d feel more comfortable doing that.” Psi, standing about seven feet away, glanced back with an impatient expression practically branded on his face. Thankfully, he remained silent and didn’t make the situation worse by playing any “jokes”.

As the Starly happily chirped and ran away with the PokeDoll, I started to wipe off the sweat that was dripping down on my face. I sure wasn't feeling as well as when I had started off the run. It might have well be the weather, or perhaps the sight of the Starly feasting on Chanzey's egg was still lingering inside my head.

My ranger noted that a Meganium has appeared and asked if I was interested to capture it or not. Seemingly noticing my condition, she had asked if I wanted to perhaps take a break and leave the Park. I decided to do the last offer given, but took out my camera before that. I took a quick snapshot of Meganium and said, "Thanks for rangering so far Sara, I think I will take a break and return back to the Park a while later."

I didn’t know whether it was indeed the encounter with Starly that had gotten to him, or if perhaps he simply wasn’t feeling so good, as Ataro looked a bit ill now. He wiped some sweat from his forehead and glanced in the direction of the Meganium herd, taking a quick picture of them before saying, "Thanks for rangering so far Sara, I think I will take a break and return back to the Park a while later."

“You’re more than welcome,” I told the young man with an apologetic smile. “Sorry that your end has to end like this and hopefully you’ll feel better soon. Let’s go ahead and get back to the Outpost at the Docks so we can get everything finalized and you can claim your Minccino.”
