    Ranger Elisa Fleming

    NBP#1

"To the Great Lakes?" I echoed, sounding like a little kid who couldn't believe her ears - and, in a way, this was the scenario as of now. I shook my head, clearing my mind. It wasn't that I hadn't heard of this particular zone of the National Park before, it's just that I hadn't visited it as often as the mountains or the Botanic Gardens.

I smiled. Finally, I had been given another chance to explore the habitat of the Water-typed Pokemon. Finally, I could be with the type of creatures I liked the most. Yes, my favorites were Water-types. And, I was sure the trainer liked them, too - after all, Garth did have a large collection of these entities on his belt.

"Alright, I'll take it," I told the secretary, snatching the brown folder from her hands. I flipped it open, allowing my yellow-colored Ranger's Digital Assistant (RDA). I would read it in full detail later on for it was quite long; I only skimmed through the important details.

It was, indeed, going to be a journey through the Great Lakes with Garth Crysis, a fellow ranger of the National Park. If I remembered correctly, he was also a referee, a judge, a grader, and the new Cerulean City Gym Leader. I was truly impressed - not just by how high he was up in the ranks with all his positions, but also by the fact that he could juggle all these responsibilities without too much of a problem.

I headed off to grab my brown-colored messenger bag, dropping in a couple of emergency items. It seemed that Garth wouldn't be bringing very many of these escape items, so I figured I should bring a decent number of them - just in case. According to his trainer file, he had packed six Energy Roots, a kind of organic healing potion. I wasn't too worried that his partners would get knocked-out or loose too much of their health for he did have these herbs.

I strapped my RDA around my wrist as it quickly transformed into something like that of the Poketch's of Sinnoh, only larger with more features. It also looked a bit like a Pokedex with its bigger screen and various buttons here and there. However, if the gadget was in its original form, it would look quite like the PokeGears of Kanto.

I then chose a few of my Pokemon to come along with me on this trip. I decided that Kipper, my Swampert and starter Pokemon, would be one of them. The other two were Archer, my Gallade, and Glaceon named Icabella. After grabbing their Pokeballs, I headed out of the Ranger Headquarters.

"Have fun, Elisa!" one of the other rangers called after me as I pushed my way outside. I could only reply with a quick "Thanks!", before making my way towards the Docks.

"Kipper, come on out!" I stood on the wooden platform and summoned my Water-Ground-type out of his red-and-white housing. The orb snapped open, releasing a flash of bright light. The zig-zagging beam shot straight to the serenely-flowing waters in front of me, forming into a sciurine-like shape. With a mighty growl, a primarily blue-colored entity appeared before me. He landed on the clear liquid dead on, creating a large splash - the wave almost getting the best of me. I jumped back immediately - I couldn't possibly go on a park run if I were to be drenched by the tides. I couldn't blame him for his enthusiastic entrance, though. After all, he hadn't been out of his ball in a while now - much less in a Park expedition.

"Excited to accompany me on a run again, huh, boy?" I greeted, patting his head as cool breeze brushed past me. My long brown hair fluttered back in the gust. Right then and there, I decided to tie up my hair into a ponytail for the day seemed to be a rather windy one. "Our destination for today: the Great Lakes."

The Mud Fish Pokemon nodded in acknowledgement as I hopped onto his back. The place wasn't very far from this Ranger Outpost, so I took it upon myself to finish reading through the application as we journeyed on rapid waters. Garth was bringing four Pokemon along with him, all having a wide set of moves. Surely, the battles I would be spectating today would be very interesting ones. I hoped to see creativity in each of them - making interesting combos and the like was much easier if your partners had diverse movepools.

I returned the Swampert back to his Pokeball upon arriving at the zone filled with Water-types. I walked up to the large, metal gates which served as the entrance to the place, knowing that I was quite early. Park security was quite tough - there was a need of a retinal scan before the gates would click open. I brought my eye up to the security device, and a red beam dazzled my pupils - bright crimson red meeting a clear, azure sky-type of blue shade. It beeped in recognition as the metal poles creaked open.

Now, all that was left was to wait for the ranger-slash-trainer.

    ---

It was a very busy morning as I prepared to go forth into the parks once more. It was only my second trip to the region and I was looking forward to increase the amount of Water Pokemon under my leadership. I had flown into the region the previous night so I was gathering my belongings from the Pokecenter.

I had brought along some items needed for the park, emergency supplies, and the four Pokemon that would accompany me. I had chosen my Snorlax, Ludicolo, Toxicroak, and Slowking for this trip. After studying my Pokemon choice from the last trip I figured these Pokemon would give me the advantage. With everything packed and ready I left the Pokecenter and start to walk towards the National Park.

It wasn’t before long before I reached the Park office. From there I checked in and confirmed my run before I took the path leading the Great Lakes area. It only took a few minutes before I sighted the long steel arches that signaled the gate was close by.

At the gates stood a young women dressed the the typical ranger garb. I placed my visitor ID into the scanner and the gates swung open a hair later. “Hello,” I said by way of introduction. “My name is Garth, you’re to be my Ranger?”

OOC: @AmericanTreeFrog -- Really sorry for the delay - I've been busy with schoolwork. Should clear up this week, though.

    Ranger Elisa Fleming

    NBP#2

A few moments of silence passed by. Before long, a male trainer soon came into sight. He walked up to the gates calmly, then placed his visitor ID into the scanner.

“Hello,” he said, introducing himself. I wasn't very close friends with him ranger-wise, but he still was a familiar face.. “My name is Garth, you’re to be my Ranger?”

I nodded. "Yeah, that would be me. My name's Elisa - Elisa Fleming. Let's get going then as I'm sure you're ready to go capture a couple of Water-types for your team."

I led him into the Great Lakes, a zone of the Park I had only visited twice before. Still, it was easy enough to navigate through this area, unlike the extensive cave networks of Mount Deckbi and Mount Oktori.

A cool breeze rushed past me, gently brushing my cheeks. I inhaled slowly - the scent was of damp grass mingled with the smell of the waters. It was an unusual aroma; salt and fresh water combined, as well as the sort of herbal odor of the green turf. In a way, it was a pleasant and relaxing fragrance.

I gazed around. Everything seemed to be calm; nothing looked to be out of the ordinary. Peaceful gusts of wind rustled the barley; its pointed tips swaying back and forth in perfect harmony.

Walking onwards, the grass crunched under the collisions with the soles of my shoes. They were damp, and I knew for sure they would leave their marks on my already quite dirty sneakers.

There were a handful of choices here in the Great Lakes. It would all be up to the trainer if he would want to explore the uniquely-sized lakes first, or the rather rapidly-flowing rivers. Before I had a chance to ask, however, I spotted a creature near one of the bushes growing in this place.

I pointed the entity out to Garth. It was a crustacean Pokémon with a red-colored shell. The joints to its limbs and the underside to its body as well as its pincers were, on the other hand, cream in coloration. It possessed four pairs of limbs in total: two pincers and three pairs of legs used for walking about. Its eyes were saucer-like, with small pupils, and a crest of three spikes rested on its head. The Ruffian Pokemon's tail was fairly short and lobster-like.

The wild encounter spotted us, too. It turned straight toward us and charged, scuttling across the grass. Its reaction didn't surprise me all that much, though, since these species were known for their aggressive territorial behavior. The Corphish snapped its sharp pincers, which have killer grips.

"Interested in battling that?" I asked.

“Yeah, that would be me,” the attractive ranger replied as I shook her hand in greeting. “My name’s Elisa - Elisa Fleming. Let’s get going then as I’m usre you’re ready to go capture a couple of Water types for your team.”

“Yes, and hopefully I’ll find the ones I’m looking for.”

She nodded at my reply and pushed forward into the vast reaches of the park. We were in a grassy knoll heading towards the lakes when a rustling in the bushes halted our party of two. The vibrant cherry colored Pokemon scuttled over to us, its pincers snapping in earnest as the Pokemon rushed to defend its territory.

“Interested in battling that?” she asked.

I looked the lobster-like Pokemon up and down and gave a quick shake of me head. “Not this run, maybe next time.”

Garth gave the Corphish a once over, then shook his head in a No. “Not this run, maybe next time," he said.

"Okay," I replied before crouching down to intercept the scurrying creature. My hand stopped it from going any farther once it was within my arm's reach. "Slow down there, little buddy." I laughed as it tried to continue charging. Fortunately, I had it under control - the Ruffian Pokemon's three pairs of legs kept on sliding backwards on the damp grass before he attempted to trudge forward once more. "Not interested in a battle today. Go on back then - we're not going to invade your territory."

The Water-type seemed to understand as, soon after the conversation, it turned with a quick nod of its head. I breathed out a sigh of relief. Delays were definitely not necessary for this National park run.

"Alright, then. Let's move on - to the ponds and lakes. Unless you'd like to check out the river first?"

A splashing sound echoed around the Great Lakes. Like some kind of a reflexive impulse of sorts, my head snapped to the direction the sound had come from. From what I was seeing now, a wild creature had leaped up from a lake and into the air. I believe it had been a graceful scene, for this species seemed to be the type who would perform such a thing.

It had wide fins, and a completely flat body. On its back seemed to be a pattern with two red spots with white outlines and a white curve underneath. From this distance (which wasn't that far, mind you), all the features of this organism resembled a cheerful face. It sped around the circumference of the waterform at an impressively rapid speed.

I brought up my Ranger's Digital Assistant, allowing it to scan the encounter. I knew what it was, but, as always, it couldn't hurt to learn a bit more about it. In a mechanical - but surely in a less annoying or high-pitched tone than regular Pokedexes - voice, the device blurted out some fun facts and information. "Mantyke, the Kite Pokemon. It is a friendly Pokémon that captures the subtle flows of seawater using its two antennae. Scientists have discovered that the distinctive patterns on its back differ by region, and, when it swims close to the surface of the ocean, people aboard ships are able to observe these patterns on its back."

"How about a Mantyke?" I asked the trainer. This specimen happened to be one of the more common ones in this zone of the Park, though I wasn't sure whether the ranger would be interested in this sort of Pokemon.

“Okay,” Elisa said, bending down to snaggy the scuttling Corphish. “Slow down there, little buddy.” She laughed as the Pokemon tried to charge but wasn’t able to because of the wet grass. “Not interested in a battle today. Go on back then - We’re not going to invade your territory.” The Water Pokemon nodded at her before it scuttled back under the bush. “Alright, then. Let’s move on - to the ponds and great lakes. Unless you’d like to check out the river first?”

I made to reply but a splashing sound to the right caught her attention. I turned towards the water and as I did a small blue and white Pokemon leapt from the waters, a cheerful smile on its face. I immediately recognized the Pokemon from the red markings on its back.

“How about a Mantyke?” Elisa asked.

“Nah, not today. I’m mostly looking for rare water-types or those with who pack a serious punch,” I replied.

The trainer-slash-ranger declined the offer almost immediately. I wasn't surprised for most people did, indeed, want to capture the rare creatures or those "who pack a serious punch", as Garth had said. Others just caught these low-tiered entities to help complete their Pokedex and for some other purposes.

I nodded in acknowledgement, turning away from the lake that the wild encounter was swimming in. Unfortunately, the creature spotted us as we were trying to make our escape. "Tyke~!" it called after us, seemingly eager to befriend us. Its reaction wasn't shocking - after all, its nature wasn't noted to be 'very friendly' for nothing.

"It seems to be interested in you," I began. "Do you have a Pokedoll to-?"

I stopped myself mid-sentence for the trainer had already retrieved a pink-colored toy from his bag. Not wasting a single moment, he quickly swung his arm back then flung the doll at the Kite Pokemon. It soared into the air in the hopes of catching the stuffed Pokedoll. One wide fin grabbed the inanimate object before the entity dove back into the serene waters. It crashed onto the surface of the water, causing waves to emerge from either side of it.

"Let's go," I told Garth once the Water-type was pre-occupied with its new-found "friend".

I led him to the other side of the zone, where bigger lakes swarmed the area. From my past experience, better, more worthy-of-capture Pokemon tended to lurk in these parts of the Great Lakes. Water-Flying-types flew freely in the air above us, swooping and gaining altitude by their own free will. None of them seemed to take much notice of us, though, so I didn't bother watching them. Bird-watching would have to wait for another day, I figured.

My sky blue-colored eyes caught sight of a jellyfish-like creature floating on the waters. It rocked gently on the waves back and forth, its line of sight completely focused on some kind of prey. It was stealthily stalking its next victim, an organism which I currently could not see... But I knew it was somewhere in the bushes. The damp plant's leaves rustled ever-so-slightly every now and then, and I was certain I could see some movement behind the shrubs.

    "Want to battle that Frillish?"

OOC: @MuddyMudkip - female and I'm liking this Pokemon greatly.

    ----

As we tried to walk away from the lake where the Mantyke was, it called out to us, “Tyke!”

“It seems to be interested in you,” Elisa said. “Do you have a Pokedoll to-”

I didn’t even hear the rest of the sentence as I reached into my bag and pulled out a standard Clefa Pokedoll. I quickly flung the doll at the baby Pokemon and watched as the Pokemon seized the toy joyfully and dived back into the lake waters.

“Let’s go,” the ranger said, wasting no time in moving on.

She took me over to the other side of the range; and it was there that we spotted the next Pokemon waiting for us. It was a jellyfish creature, not unlike my own Tentacruel who I had chosen to leave behind. But unlike Tentacruel it was a predominately blue Pokemon with patches of white on its arms and head. A patch of white skin that could readily be described as a collar encircled its tiny neck, and gave the Pokemon the appearance of a floating head, as its five arms were hidden under the water, ready to snatch up any prey.

“Want to battle that Frillish?” Elisa cut into my thoughts.

“You can bet on that,” I replied reverently, ducking behind a bush so I could come up with a quick plan.

Frillish were a Water and Ghost type Pokemon that possessed a wide array of potentially deadly moves. One that was of immediate concern was its Pain Split technique, a move that was unlikely for it to know, but still in the realm of possibilities. Meaning that I couldn’t play loose with the Pokemon, and I had to be on guard at all times and be prepared for such a move. In terms of which of my four Pokemon I would use, Ludicolo was out because he really couldn’t damage the Pokemon all that well because of Frillish’s dual nature of Water and Ghost. Snorlax was out for the simple fact the I reserved Snorlax for tough or long engagements which were of the rough nature. That left me with either Slowking or Toxicroak.

Both Slowking and Toxicroak could maneuver well in water and gained additional benefits from it. Slowking’s water moves were boosted by the moisture, but Toxicroak could heal from Water moves, essentially limiting Frillish to extra moves or its Ghost attacks, which weren’t effective on Toxicroak. The choice was between Slowking’s status moves and its ability to heal readily, or the firepower that Toxicroak possessed in abundance. It was a tough decision, but in the end Slowking would have this battle.

I rose from the bushes and got in sight of the Frillish, so that it would focus on me instead of the prey it was stalking. I pulled out Slowking’s ball and depressed the center button, enlarging the device to normal size. “Slowking, let’s get started.”

In a flash of crimson light the kingly pink Pokemon appeared on the soft sandy shores. “Slowking,” my Pokemon rumbled. The single red gem in Slowking’s crown dazzled in the light. The alternating red and white of its collar settling on its shoulder like a feather. Slowking opened his mouth and showed his two fangs as my Psychic type looked at his foe.

“Listen up, Slowking,” I started, “Frillish has the advantage because of its Ghost attacks, which means we are going to need to counteract those moves. Get ready for a tough fight.” Slowking merely nodded, not much fazed this guy, he had been with me for years. “We are going to start things off with your Amnesia move, followed up by your Thunder Wave move.”

My reasoning behind these choice of moves was simple; Amnesia would sharply raise the special defense of Slowking, giving him added defense from the special moves of Frillish. Thunder Wave would by effect hinder Frillish’s movements. Of the two moves Amnesia was the easiest to use for Slowking as all it required was for my Pokemon to temporarily lose some of his memory for the duration of the battle.

To achieve Amnesia, Slowking closed his luminous eyes and exhaled softly as the Pokemon gathered itself and focused on the processes that occurred within his brain. Once he had achieved this state of mind, he focused in on the pathways that contained his memories. Slowking would then shut off the neurons to each pathway, causing the brain to think that they were never there. Naturally Slowking placed a detonator on each pathway that would trigger when the battle either ended or he fainted, restoring the neural pathway.

I could tell when Slowking achieved this process because his eye suddenly blinked open and were unfocused temporarily. “Now the Thunder Wave,” I prompted him.

His eyes came back into focus and he turned his attention to Frillish. The gray shell that served as his crown turned from a matte gray to a shimmering light yellow. Slowking was charging the protons and electrons around him and focusing them at the jewel in his crown so that the electricity could build up enough until he had a charge. This only took a few seconds because this was a move he commonly used in battle. When a sufficient charge had been built up Slowking pooled the energy into a small blue ball right in the center of his crown. Then, using a slimmer of his Psychic energy, he released the electricity, but channeled it so that it spread forward towards Frillish in a ripple of blue electricity.

“You can bet on that." Came the reply as Garth ducked into a nearby bush. I assumed he wanted to be hidden from sight until he could devise his battle plan. As he thought to himself, I took a good look at the Frillish.

I could tell that this specimen's gender was female due to her many distinguished features. First and foremost, she was primarily pink in coloration - males being blue. Her head had a crown-like tuft which was surrounded by a round pattern. I knew that the male counterparts' tufts were surrounded by a triangular pattern instead. Another difference were the five tentacle-like appendages - males had smooth ones, while females, like this encounter, had wavy ones. Her white-pupiled, oval eyes had a red sclera and blue iris, with a lower, curled eyelash on each; males' eyes, on the other hand, had a blue sclera and red iris, with a higher, strait eyelash on each. Both male and female Water-Ghost-types had a collar around their necks, the males having a wavy collar and the females having a more fluffy collar. By looking at these comparisons, I could definitely be certain that this wild entity was a female.

By now, Mr. Crysis had already sprang out of his hiding place and was confronting his soon-to-be opponent. He called out a Water-typed creature, who also happened to have Psychic genes. His Slowking, Kongo, emerged on the edge of the lake with a bright flash of light. He bared out his two fangs as he growled a low, "Slowking."

“Listen up, Slowking,” the trainer began, wasting no time in calling out his commands, “Frillish has the advantage because of its Ghost attacks, which means we are going to need to counteract those moves. Get ready for a tough fight.” Slowking merely nodded, not very much fazed by the sortof challenge he had been presented with. “We are going to start things off with your Amnesia move, followed up by your Thunder Wave move.”

The Royal Pokemon closed his eyes in concentration, delving into his inner self and shuffling through his memories. He cleared his mind of the things that he knew he would not need as of this moment - forgetting the frustrations of the battle to focus on other things. The thoughts that he set aside were on pathways in his brain which he no longer had connections to. He had shut off the neurons that processed these memories, causing his mind to think that they had never been there. This mental clarity gave the user some resistance against Special Attacks, particularly mentally-affecting ones, as he is now able to concentrate on defending against them.

"Now the Thunder Wave," Garth said, reminding his partner in case he had happened to forget. Slowking turned his attention to the Floating Pokemon, who didn't think much of the arrival of company - she was concentrating too much on her prey to take much notice of our presence.

His gray shell began to glow a bright, yellow hue. Static began to charge up around him, causing sparks to crackle around his head. Numerous tendrils of electricity were released, channeled to go and bind the opponent. The waves quickly surrounded their target, closing in in a dramatic pace, as if to taunt the Water-Ghost-type. The trainer's Pokemon concentrated on moving the streaks of electrical energy to wrap around her - he did this by using a small percentage of his Psychic energy. At last, the electric charge coiled and squeezed her. She cringed at the sudden force put into the move, struggling to keep down a yowl as electricity seeped into her. Electric currents seeped into her bloodstream, blending in with it, and ultimately, causing a status ailment.

Kongo let out a sigh of relief - the combo of Amnesia and Thunder Wave was now complete. The wild encounter was now in a state of paralysis. She managed, with a bit of effort, to turn her head towards her attacker. Her face had a look of pure hatred. She must've really wanted to launch her own assault at her prey.

She let out a low grumble, opening her mouth to shoot out a pale, aqua sphere at the foe. The orb was as blue as the sea, and I could almost see waves of water crashing around all over. The pulse of liquid slammed into the Water-Psychic-type, bursting into a rather large tidal wave which immediately surrounded him before crashing down. He was drenched, to say the least. The attack had done a solid amount of damage, though perhaps not as much as the Frillish wanted.

OOC: @MuddyMudkip - this feel like a lame post to me, sorry.
    ----

As the ripples of electricity shot through the muscles of Frillish the Pokemon cried aloud as her face twisted to that of rage. She opened her mouth and shot out a pale blue sphere at Slowking. The orb of energy infused with the power of the sea crashed head-on into Slowking. Slowking slowly shook the damage off and stared down his angry foe.

I was of course interested by the events Frillish had just given me some keys moves on its nature and how it would attack me in the future. It was either rash, hasty, or hardy by my estimate. Those generally meant that the Pokemon loved to attack, and could be prone to mistakes. I could that to my advantage if Slowking knew something like Taunt, but he didn’t, so that was out of the question.

Furthermore, I didn’t want Frillish using one of its powerful moves like Pain Split, so I had to think of some ways to blunt the attacks of Frillish. One obvious move that I had at my disposable was the Attract move. Slowking was make and Frillish was female. Meaning the attack would work bar the nature of Frillish stopping it. But it was probably my best chance of stopping such a move outside of Taunt.

Since Attract was sure to be my next move I had to think of my next ones. Compared to Slowking Frillish wasn’t that much of a match stats wise. Meaning I could only hit it a few times with attacks like Psychic or Shadow Ball before its health dropped dangerous low. Luckily, I had a slew of moves that Slowking could use without damaging the health of Frillish too much.

“Alright, Slowking, start things off with your Attract and follow that up with your Curse move. Once those are done I want you to hit Frillish with your Shadow Ball move.” I had picked a combo of three moves, but I was sure that Slowking could pull them off without a hitch.

Attract was move that required the Pokemon to be male and female, otherwise it would fail. The Pokemon using Attract would basically release Pokemon pheromones that attracted the opposite sex and act in a nice manner towards the opponent. Slowking smiled a toothy grin at Frillish at cocked his large head at the Ghost type Pokemon. It only took a few seconds for the Attract to be complete and Slowking moved onto his next attack.

The next move in line was the Curse move. Curse was a powerful move that depended on the Pokemon using it. For Ghost types Curse would cut the health of the user Pokemon by fifty percent. But that hefty cost resulted in a curse being laid upon the opposing Pokemon. Once that Pokemon was cursed it would lose twenty-five percent of its max health every turn until it either fainted or switched. For non-Ghost types Curse acted completely different. Curse would raise the attack and defense of the user Pokemon while lowering the speed. Lowering speed could be a deadly move in any battle, but Slowking was already so slow that any loss of speed wouldn’t matter that much. But regardless, Frillish would be slower because of it being paralyzed. So Slowking didn’t have much to trade off when it used Curse, meaning that I benefited from it and didn’t lose anything. To activate Curse Slowking used his Psychic energies to activate the move. I could tell when he used the move because his body became surrounded in a pink aura before that turned to a dark purple and black that spoke of a price.

The final attack was the Shadow Ball move. Shadow Ball was a relatively simple move for Slowking to use. Despite being Psychic and weak to Ghost type moves, Shadow Ball was a Ghost move that was easy for Slowking to know and used. Slowking moved his stubby arms forward and right away a small dark orb began to form between his hands. Because he wasn’t a Ghost type Slowking had to draw the darkness needed from the attack elsewhere. Dark streaks moving along the ground started to move and point towards Slowking. Pieces moved up the body of Slowking and disappeared into the ever growing orb of shadows. When the orb was completed it was about the size of a Gastly and resembled a black orb of swirling shapes. With a cry Slowking fired the attack at Frillish.

Garth quickly thought to himself about his next move. Within a few moments, he had come up with a combination of three different assaults, though not all involved directly attacking the opponent. “Alright, Slowking, start things off with your Attract and follow that up with your Curse move. Once those are done I want you to hit Frillish with your Shadow Ball move.”

I was curious as to how this would play out. I was curious to see what Kongo would do to infatuate his female enemy. He smiled a wide grin, cocking his head in that flirtatious kind of manner. A few more seconds passed... And, in the end, the Water-Psychic-type did attract the attention of the wild creature.

Her eyes followed his every move, even at the time when he was laying a curse upon... Well, we couldn't exactly say it was upon himself, for the move certainly benefited him more than anything - the price to pay wasn't even that large in this scenario. On the other hand, we still couldn't say it was upon the Water-Ghost-type for it didn't actually affect her in any way.

He closed his eyes as if to mentally calm himself down and lay a curse. An aura soon enveloped him, emanating with a sense of dread... A sense of loss and gain. There was a price to pay, no matter what the case. The bubbling, seemingly constantly-moving energy glimmered in a different kind of way - it wasn't shining brightly, but it was surrounded by a shroud of darkness. Black and dark purple colors swiveled around, sometimes mixing with each other to form unknown patterns.

In this case, due to the Slowking not having Ghost-typed genes, the effect of this move was very much different compared to when Ghost-types would use it. Instead of actually laying a curse upon the foe and causing it to lose twenty-five percent of its health every round, the user's Attack and Defense stats rose. He was now be tougher both ways - stronger when attacking, and more rigid and less prone to taking a good deal of damage when being attacked. The cost of doing this was different, too - paying fifty percent of the user's health, or their speed would be lowered. When the move was complete, the Royal Pokemon found himself being slower than usual.

Finally, we were approaching the final destination. Oh, wait - I mean, the final attack in the combo. As of yet, the Floating Pokemon was still infatuated, and showed no signs of trying to launch an assault. A dark purple and black, in the same shades as the hue that had enveloped him in a bubble earlier, orb began to form in front of him. The sphere was made up of a ghostly aura was still building up in power and size, though now it looked to be just about almost as big as a Gastly. The spheroid was actually quite unstable as power and energy of the shadows crashed about in the ball. Kongo raised the ball up, preparing to fire. He flung it forward, giving it an extra push. He sent the ball flying straight towards the Frillish, hitting her dead on. Upon impact, the orb burst, letting out breezes of ghostly wind that rocked the area the surrounded her. It brushed against the calm lapping waves of the water, breaking all the calmness and serenity.

The Water-Ghost-type temporarily broke away from her lovey-dovey trance, and paralysis hadn't managed to stop her this time, either. She hurriedly released an eerie gust of purple wind. They spiraled, creating a cyclone-like vortex of breezes. The repulsive blast of air quickly found its mark, pulsing against Garth's partner. He stumbled backwards as the air pushed him to do so, dealing a considerable amount of damage.

Frillish was on a roll now. She charged up again, only a bit slower this time. Ice began to form at the tips of her lips. It shaped into a small sphere of glowing Ice energy. It grew bigger some, then she released with a strong blow. Immediately, it burst into a beam of pure ice. A zig-zagging, erratic beam that was heading straight towards the Slowking. It looked much like the lightning of the sky or a Thunderbolt attack - only difference was, it was ice, cold ice.

The impact from Slowking’s Shadow Ball seemed to bring Frillish back to reality. The Ghost Pokemon shook itself temporary free from the effects of Attract and responded with a Ghost move of its own. Out of nowhere a blast of purple infused wind sprang up around the body of Frillish. Using her arms, the Pokemon seemed to be adding more energy to the ever forming cyclone. With a small exertion the attack was flung at Slowking, who with his lowered speed had no chance of dodging the attack.

Slowking stumbled back from the force of the move, but remained standing a stoically stood his ground. A small seemed to flash across the face of Frillish before she started up her next attack. Small ice crystals began to form on the flesh of lips. The energy quickly formed into a sphere of cyan colored Ice energy. With a strong blow a stream of of ice, that quickly snaked towards Slowking.

While Icebeam wouldn’t do a lot to Slowking because it was an Ice attack and Slowking had a special defense . That didn’t mean I wanted Slowking to get by the attack, it would not be a sign of a good trainer who cared about his Pokemon. The bad news for me was that I hadn’t taught Slowking a wide array of moves yet. He knew all his level up moves, but I had only taught him thirteen extra moves, not a small number, but lower than others on my team. Snorlax was my highest Tmed Pokemon, and he had over forty; I had even brought him along for heavy firepower.

That being said, I did have a plan. It was risky, and depended on numerous factors outside my control, but I was going to try it anyway. “Slowking, use your Surf to create a slide, then use Zen Headbutt.”

Because I didn’t have a great countering move like Flash Cannon, I decided to use both a level up and taught move. The kicker was that I had to utilize the power of Frillish’s Icebeam or the combo would fail.

Ideally, Slowking would use Surf to create a wall of water, which would then act as wall against the ice. If the Icebeam hit the water the water would instantly freeze. Creating an ice slide. Once the water froze into ice Slowking would lurch forward to become airborne temporarily. With him above Frillish, there wasn’t much the dual typed foe do, much less dodge, due to paralysis coupled with the maneuverability of Slowking once he was in the air.

But, it all relied on the Icebeam. If Slowking didn’t use enough of the lake water or he misjudged the trajectory of Icebeam, then the best outcome would be Slowking still hitting Frillish, just with less damage because Slowking wouldn’t be able to build up enough speed. On the worse end of outcomes, Slowking could be frozen, or the combo would flat out fail and Slowking would be dumped in the water, and he would be a sitting duck until he could regain his footing in the water.

The good thing for me was that Slowking had done this before. Long ago when I had just been starting out my adventure as a trainer, I had developed a fondness for Ice types. Once I had acquired a lineup that included Pokemon like Jynx, Dewgong and Cloyster, I set my sights on an open Ice gym. So I set about trying to collect Water types and training the once I had. During this period Slowking was one of my more powerful Pokemon then. As such Slowking received a lot of training versus Ice type Pokemon. During the training a similar situation had come up, and on a whim I had tried this attack combo. To my delighted surprise it had worked marvelously against the other Pokemon. Since then I had repeated the move with Slowking and even taught it to some of my other Pokemon. But while there was success, the combo did end up failing a good thirty percent of the time due to various reasons. Meaning, it had the same chance of working as attacks like Thunder, or Blizzard did.

I never did get the gym though. I close friend of mine named Carly was chosen as leader. Being young then, I was of course crushed by the news, but delighted in the fact that a friend had got the gym over me. One of the reasons this was important is because it turned my attention to the cousins of Ice Pokemon, Water. After the battle for that gym ended a spot was open in a Water gym. As I collected and trained more Water Pokemon I felt my bond with them grow. This bond grew until I had collected and trained a vast amount of Water Pokemon. Two of the Pokemon currently with me were currently Water types. My Toxicroak I used in my current gym as a Wildcard Pokemon.

But I digress, Slowking was about to start his Surf attack. Being in a very moist area, water was easy to find. That was made easier because the battle was taking place on a lake, just with Slowking at shore and Frillish in the water. It only took Slowking a few steps before the lake wave immersed his legs in its cool grasp. Slowking placed his hands in the water and commanded the water to obey his commands. While Slowking wasn’t one of most powerful Pokemon like Alakazam or Salamence, he was no slouch in the battle department. Quick as the twinkling of the eye, Slowking had created a wave of water upon which he rode like a surfer. The scene resembled that of a small tsunami, only heading out to sea instead of towards the shore.

Slowking was about to make contact with the Icebeam, I only had to wait a few seconds for the outcome to be decided.

Garth did not seem to be too fazed by the Ice Beam - maybe because it wouldn’t have that much of an effect on Kongo, maybe because he already knew exactly how to counter it, or maybe for both reasons stated above.

“Slowking, use your Surf to create a slide, then use Zen Headbutt.”

It was easy for the Water-Psychic-type to create a water slide since the surrounding area was very damp, if not wet. Next thing we knew, a large wave had come up from the river itself, rising up to meet him. He was now riding the waves in a somewhat surfing position, except without the need of a surfboard.

The freezing beam of ice connected with the tsunami, and right at that moment, he jumped to avoid being frozen along with the water. It was as though he had done this before - the trainer hadn’t even needed to tell him what the Surf was going to be used for. In mid-air, his head had already began to glow a bright blue hue. It seemed to sparkle with energy.

The Royal Pokemon landed on the cool, frozen slide, slipping down it quickly - head first. The Frillish was too stunned to react, as if she was frozen on the spot, just blankly awaiting her “doom” as the shining blue head blinded her. He slammed into her, diving downwards and pushing them both into the water - down under. The liquid splashed frantically as the surface opened up to swallow them as they continued on downwards due to the force of the collision.

Garth’s partner resurfaced first, swimming back to the bank of the river. He pulled himself back up, standing once more on a less wet surface - back on not-exactly-dry land. For a few moments, it looked as though the opponent had been lost under the sea - or river, whatever. Suddenly, though, a barrage of bubbles - yes, bubbles - shot out from the depths of the water. Kongo had let his guard down, even though it had just been for one quick moment, and the Bubblebeam attack struck him dead on.

He wasn’t affected that much, though, since it was a Water-typed attack. He was only pushed back a few inches, mainly because he hadn’t anticipated an attack. For a moment there, we had honestly thought that the Water-Ghost-type wouldn’t show any longer.

Then, she finally showed herself with a small smirk playing on her lips. She bubbled up to the surface, an orb of dark purple energy continuously growing right in front of her. Another Shadow Ball assault. However, before she could fire the sphere, her blood seemed to stop flowing all of a sudden. She cringed, feeling electric sparks shocking her, conquering her bloodstream, muscles, and stopping her body movements. The ball shrunk as quickly as it had formed, its life source now unable to provide the power to keep it going.

Paralysis, the major status ailment that doesn’t work a lot of times - but when it does, it really helps a ton.

The Slowking breathed a sigh of relief, now waiting for further instructions from his trainer.

I think Frillish was stunned by my unorthodox techniques because she made no effort to dodge the Zen Headbutt after I countered her Icebeam. The force of the impact caused both Pokemon to be forced underwater. Slowking emerged first, a triumphant grin on his face as he swam the short distance to shore. But just as he flashed a toothy grin at me, a stream of bubbles shot from the water and struck Slowking center-mass. Startled by the surprise attack, Slowking sputtered in outrage and it took him a few seconds to regain his balance.

Frillish surfaced a moment later, a smug smile on her lips. Two of her arms were in front her and an orb of purple and black energy. It pulsed like a heartbeat as the Pokemon added more power to the Shadow Ball. But before she could fire the attack at Slowking, her muscles locked, as if an electrical current was running through her system. The Thunder Wave had chosen that moment to active, sparing Slowking from some hefty damage.

I breathed a sigh of relief along with my Pokemon; I felt this battle coming to a close. And when it did, Frillish would be on my team. “Excellent job, Kongo,” I praised my Pokemon. “This is almost over, I only need one more attack from you.”

Initially, I had been planning on using Yawn and trying to get Frillish asleep. But, while that aided in the capture, it wasn’t exactly necessary at this point in the contest. Furthermore, the attack might not put Frillish to sleep and it would allow the Pokemon to hit back at Slowking, not something I wanted.

“Here’s the plan,” I said to Kongo. “I want you to use Grass Knot, and I’ll follow that up with a Park Ball.”

Kongo nodded at me and closed his eyes in concentration. Two small vines sprang up in front of him, and from those vines a small orb of jade and fulvous color sprang up. It was small at first, but continued to grow until it was just under the size of the average human head. When it reached the size, the vines shrunk back into the earth and left the Grass Knot for Slowking. Kongo grabbed hold of the Grass move and flung it at Frillish.

As he flung the attack, I grabbed an empty Park Ball and made ready to throw it at Frillish.

“Here’s the plan,” the trainer-slash-ranger called out to his Pokemon for the final assault, “I want you to use Grass Knot, and I’ll follow that up with a Park Ball.”

Kongo nodded in acknowledgment before turning his concentration to the task at hand. He murmured a quick chant, focused on moving the wildlife at his own will. Two vines sprang up in front of his feet. They swiveled from side to side, slithering upward like a serpentine. They curled gracefully as the Royal Pokemon controlled their fantastic movements.

A jade-green orb formed in between the tips of the two vines. Gradually it grew larger and larger. I knew the Slowking was deep in concentration with his eyes closed tightly shut and a few beads of sweat trickling down his head. Being a Water-Psychic-type, controlling these wildlife and plants did not come easily to him; thus, for the move to be performed flawlessly, nature required full focus from him.

Then, the vines shrunk back down to the earth, leaving the sphere for Kongo. His eyes fluttered open. He quickly took the ball, then tossed it at the wild Frillish. It exploded into numerous vines, which acted like the tendrils of the earlier Thunder Wave.

They coiled around the opponent’s body, gripping her tightly. She couldn’t move, not even a muscle as they bound her, squeezed her, with all their might. They were draining her energy, strength, and power, inflicting a severe amount of damage to her health.

Now, Garth saw this as the perfect time to strike. He swung his arm back just as the Grass Knot dealt the last breath-taking squeeze. He pushed his arm forward, letting go of the Park Ball, and sent it towards the right direction with a small push from his fingers. The vines uncoiled themselves from the creature, dissipating, almost like magic, a moment after floating in the river’s water.

The camo-colored orb struck the now-weak and -tired Water-Ghost-type dead on, bouncing back an inch or two to snap open. An erratic red beam shot out from the innards of the sphere, enveloping the target then pulling her into the ball.

It clicked close before landing on the bank of the river with a soft thud. For a split-second, I thought it was going to roll its way into the liquid. However, and luckily so, it wriggled the other direction, shaking fiercely.

The Floating Pokemon had about close to twenty percent of her health left after the Grass-typed attack. It was evident she was using the last remnants of her energy to try and free herself from inside the Park Ball. Finally, though, she gave in - the ball stopped moving completely, altogether.

The Frillish had been captured. And that was that for this battle.

I quickly retrieved the now-occupied orb, placing it in my brown satchel. As I walked back to the trainer, I congratulated him, “Hey, congrats on the capture! Rest up now if you want, then we’ll explore the other edges of this river.”

OOC: @MuddyMudkip - Yeah, just wanted to make sure you remember.

The green orb sailed towards the struggling Frillish and struck it on the head. The ball bounced off the flesh of Frillish and opened up. A red beam shot from the capture device and enveloped the Water type Pokemon briefly before the Pokemon got sucked into the confines of the device.

The ball rolled towards us as it wiggled fiercely. Frillish may have been low on health, but she was putting up a determined fight to escape. But after a moment, she stopped trying and the Park Ball settled with a ding. The ranger retrieved the ball before coming up to me.

“Hey, congrats on the capture! Rest up now if you want, then we’ll explore the other edges of this river.”

“Thanks, Elisa,” I responded as I recalled Kongo so he could rest. “Anyway, a rest isn’t needed yet. Let’s continue all, I’m looking forward to what awaits us down the river.”

“Thanks, Elisa,” he replied as he called his Slowking back into his red-and-white orb. “Anyway, a rest isn’t needed yet. Let’s continue all, I’m looking forward to what awaits us down the river.”

    I nodded in acknowledgement. “Alright.”

I led Garth upstream, going in the direction counter to the flow of the river. “I figured it’d be better if we head this way,” I began my explanation in case he was confused. “We’ll probably encounter more creatures than if we head downstream. The water currents will push them towards us, in any case, instead of away from us.”

My eyes scanned the area quickly - and not only the river but also the large lake to the right of it. There was something familiar about this specific spot in the zone, however, I couldn’t seem to place my finger on it exactly. It sortof reminded me of the time I hadn’t been a ranger yet - still at the academy and still going through a series of tests.

Just as I finally recalled what was so special about this spot, it, coincidentally, emerged from the depths of the pool. It was a Milotic, one of the most beautiful Pokemon I had ever seen. From its humble beginnings as a Feebas, this fully-evolved entity was truly amazing like the other specimens of its species. Unlike any other Tender Pokemon, though, this one was white in coloration instead of a somewhat flesh hue.

I pointed it out to the trainer. “See that Milotic over there? She’s the only white one in the entire National Park, and possibly even in the entire universe. She lacks a normal pigment which would have given her her natural coloring, thus the white coloration. Furthermore, the absence of this element in her genes also causes her to be extremely shy.” I spurted out information as I recalled what an older, more experienced ranger had told me before. As I spoke, the Water-type turned its head towards us, giving us a quick glance. Then, as quickly as she had burst out from under the water, she dove straight back into it. I sighed softly, then started off again, gesturing to the young man to follow.

As we walked along the riverbank, careful not to slip and tumble into the liquid, creatures either watched us pass curiously, fled away, gave a quick glare of aggressiveness, or ignored us completely. I kept walking along, though, because most of them shrunk back into a hiding place or turned on their heels after watching us for a moment or two. Some just didn’t like human company. Besides, I was pretty sure Garth wasn’t interested in them - most could be found at the local PokeMart, and some weren’t very good in competitive battling.

“Are there any particular Pokemon creatures you’re after?” I asked the ranger-slash-trainer, trying to spur up a bit of a conversation to help pass the time until we’d find an interesting encounter. Of course, I was also curious in what he was looking for.

“Alright,” the fellow ranger responded. “I figured it’d be better if we head this way,” she said, leading a path upstream. “We’ll probably encounter more creatures than if we head downstream. The water currents will push them towards us, in any case, instead of away from us.

I nodded my head at her reasoning, it was solid thinking.

We had only went upstream for a few minutes before she started to scan the waterways. It was clear she was looking for something, but what exactly was a mystery. Suddenly she flashed me a smile and pointed at the lake to our right. A white Milotic had appeared from the depths of the lake. “See that Milotic over there? She’s the only white one in the entire National Park, and possibly even in the entire universe. She lacks a normal pigment which would have given her her natural coloring, thus the white coloration. Furthermore, the absence of this element in her genes also causes her to be extremely shy,” Elisa said excitedly, this particular Milotic was obviously of interest to her.

We didn’t get to enjoy the Pokemon long because when it spotted us it quickly dived under the water once more. We continued to walk along the riverbank for a few minutes before she broke the silence. “Are there any particular Pokemon creatures you’re after?”

“Yes, there are a few that I would like to add to my team. A Staryu, Horsea, Feebas, and Totodile are currently what I’m interested in. But I’m also trying to collect all the Water types so I’m looking for anything that just catches my interest.

“Alex, wake up!” a loud voice shouted into Alex’s ear. Alex groaned and slowly tilted his head to face the invader of his sleep. As soon as he realized who it was, he jolted upright and started to fiddle around with some spare pieces of paper lying around on his desk.

“Go and do something productive, here is a run. Take it and be gone before I next see you,” The man shouted again, flicking saliva across Alex’s face. Alex wiped his face and took a small file from the manager in charge. He was a nice man, however if he ever caught a ranger sleeping on the job, they know what was coming. Alex threw his coat across his shoulders and headed out towards the Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes weren’t very far from the Ranger HQ; it was about a five minute walk to reach the main lake. Alex was always fascinated at Lakes, whether it was the lakes themselves or the wildlife occupying them. Alex withdrew a small PokeBall from his belt and threw it into the dry humid air. With a small flash, a huge white flying Pokemon gracefully appeared. Alex looked up at Togekiss and watched as it started to fly ahead and then come back, like an obedient dog.

Both Pokemon and Ranger set off down the small dirt track, parallel to a small lake. Immediately, a large serpent-like Pokemon slivered out of the water and back in, like a dolphin in the ocean. Alex’s jaw hung low, before he pushed it back into place. It was very rare that Milotic would show herself. According the National Park Statistics, there had only ever been one in the Great Lakes. Milotic dived back into the water and was never to be seen.

Alex continued to head down the path, following a small map with a small red cross dotted not far from his trailing finger. Alex looked up and noticed a trainer in the distance. Alex picked up the pace and within seconds, he was standing next to his trainer.

“Sorry it took so long; I only found I was taking you through the Park an hour ago. The name is Alex Fisher,” Alex said, outstretching his hand to the trainer.

Whilst Alex was introducing himself, a small yellow Pokemon bundled out of the bushes and fell onto the floor. It picked itself up and looked around, hoping that no one noticed it. Alex smiled and said to Garth, “Do you want to capture this quite clumsy Psyduck?”

Psyduck looked up the Trainer and planted his hands onto his head and groaned, “Psyyyy”

I heard the pounding of feet on the dirt path, and turned to see a ranger come walking up to me. “Sorry it took so long; I only found I was taking you through the Park an hour ago. The name is Alex Fisher,” the man held at a hand in greeting.

“Hey,” I grasped his hand and returned the greeting in kind. “Garth, thanks for getting here. It’s been a long wait.”

We were sudden;y interuppted when a small yellow duck Pokemon came waddling out of some bushes. “Do you want to capture this quite clumsy Pokemon?” Alex asked me.

“No.” Was my immediate answer. “I just caught one on my last trip out here and I don’t need another.”

“Let’s see if it will leave us alone, and if not I buy a Pokedoll from you.”
