“No.” Was my immediate answer. “I just caught one on my last trip out here and I don’t need another.” Garth replied. Alex could sympathize, not every Pokemon needed to be caught, and there wouldn’t be any point capturing the same Pokemon twice. Alex turned around and started to walk away with Garth, when suddenly Alex felt a small tug on his trouser leg. He quickly turned around and saw the Psyduck again. It looked like this Pokemon wasn’t going to give up easily.

“It’s ok, Can I buy a Pokedoll from you?” Garth asked as he held out some small green money. Psyduck look up at the transaction and simply leaped into the air and took the money away from Garth’s hands and quickly waddled back into the bushes. Everything happened so fast that Alex couldn’t react.

“I’m sorry for that, however it looks like Psyduck has left us, well we should carry on this way,” Alex said, pointing his finger in the way.

The group started to walk down a small trail, still parallel to the lake beside them, with a dark dense forest approaching in the distance. Alex was looking around idly when suddenly he noticed a small group of Pokemon running away from the forest. His ranger instincts immediately kicked in and he started to evaluate what was happening. If it was a fire we should act quickly, however there wasn’t any smoke. Something strange was up. The suddenly reached a small path which diverted into the forest. Alex looked closely down the trail, hoping to see anything, however there was no luck. Then out of the blue a distressed sound appeared from the forest.

    “Help, Help me,”

“We should head towards the forest, I’m sorry we are going off track, however I have a bad feeling something is up,” Alex said to Garth. He has never asked a trainer to go off track, however he had a hunch that something was in trouble.

After trekking down the trail, deep into the forest, Alex noticed a small blue tail popping up from the ground. Alex hastily ran towards the tail, wondering what it was. As soon as Alex reached the object, he suddenly noticed what it was. The Pokemon before them was Keldeo, the Legendary Colt Pokemon. It was part of the legendary musketeers, with Keldeo rumoured to be the strongest. However there was something wrong with Keldo. Its foot was trapped in a root, and somewhat seemed to injure itself trying to set free. Alex applied his Pokemon knowledge and searched through his bag for a First Aid kit.

After applying the bandage and healing the injury, Alex helped Keldeo back onto its feet. Keldeo said out loud, “Thank You, I will repay you one day,”

Alex turned to Garth and said, “Well, today must be a lucky day. We have seen Keldeo,”

I held at the wad of cash to Alex, but before the ranger could seize it the wild Psyduck leapt up and snatched the money from my hands. The Pokemon quickly waddled away before either of us could react and get the money back.

“I’m sorry for that,” Alex said after a few moments. “However, it looks like Psyduck has left. Well we should carry on this way.”

Alex led us down a small trail leading deeper into the lake region when he suddenly focused on a group of Pokemon fleeing from the woods. He zoned in on the direction from which they were fleeing and he started walking in that direction.

We hadn’t gone far when we started to hear a cry of help. “Help! Help me!,” the voice rang out.

“We should head towards the forest, I’m sorry we’re going off track. However, I have a bad feeling something is up.”

I shrugged. “Just lead the way, maybe we can lend assistance.”

It took us a few minutes to penetrate the wooded area, but we were rewarded by the sight of a small blue horse. The Pokemon had a hoof stuck in a root and couldn’t free itself from the entanglement. Alex rushed over, freed the leg and applied a dissolving bandage to the injured Pokemon.

“Thank you,”the Pokemon responded when he was finished. “ I replay you one day.” The Pokemon tested its leg by applying pressure, and when it was satisfied it bounded off.

“Well today must be a lucky day. We have seen Keldeo.”

“Not too lucky, I don’t have a camera on me. Hopefully we can find some Pokemon for me to catch.”

“Not too lucky, I don’t have a camera on me. Hopefully we can find some Pokemon for me to catch.” Garth said. Alex understood and watched as Keldeo slowly galloped away. It was the first Legendary Pokemon he had witnessed in the Great Lakes, hopefully they will encounter move on the expedition. 7

Alex lead Gareth out of forest, and back onto the small path, adjacent to the lake. Alex glanced up at the sky and noticed something strange in the distance. A large black cloud was suddenly creeping over the mountain tops Mount Oktori. Since he was rushed to get over here, Alex was under prepared and only carried along a map, some Pokedolls and other item which the trainer can buy. Then out of nowhere, a small beaver Pokemon appeared from the water's edge. Its eyes stared towards Garth and slowly approached the trainer. Alex looked down at the small Bidoof and outstretched his hand, hoping the small beaver Pokemon would come closer. Bidoof snarled and quickly leaped forward and started to attack Alex. Togekiss, who had been following them, quickly intervened and tackled Bidoof off Alex. Bidoof rolled back and quickly got back onto its feet. Alex refrained from battling it, however looked across and asked Garth. "Do you want to catch this Bidoof?"

Bidoof snarled towards the two trainers, eager for a battle.

Alex just nodded at me and resumed his walk down the trail. He took a winding path, but we never came across any more Pokemon. Eventually we exited the forest and came out on a path next to the main lake. A strong rumbling filled the air, causing Alex to look up a dark thunder head over Mount Oktori.

Suddenly a small Bidoof sprang out from a nearby bush. The ranger walked over, trying to be friendly, but the Pokemon snarled at him and tried to bite his outstretched hand. But before the Pokemon could make contact the ranger’s Togekiss charged it tackled the Pokemon,

“Do you want catch this Bidoof?”

“No thanks.” Didn’t even have to think about it. “Let’s run, and I have cash if needed for a doll.”

@AmericanTreeFrog, I am so so sorry for this late post.

“No thanks.” Didn’t even have to think about it. “Let’s run, and I have cash if needed for a doll.” Garth replied. Alex glanced down at the small beaver's face; its large white eyes looked down at the ground. Alex had a theory that there are hundreds of different personalities for Wild Pokemon. Some want to be captured and loved, some want to be ignored and put up a fight when you battle it and others simply aim to be the best. Alex urged Garth on, hoping the Bidoof would just wonder back into the bush. However this Bidoof was determined and grabbed onto Garth's trouser leg, pulling it towards the ground. Garth tugged his trouser leg away from the grasp of Bidoof and took a few steps back.

“Looks like this Bidoof is a clingy one,” Alex noted. Garth looked boldly at Alex and returned to his bag, removed some money from the pocket. He held it out and said nothing. Alex knew what he wanted and there was no need to waste words in telling him. Alex removed a small Clefairy Doll from his rucksack, exchanging it for the money. Garth threw the doll onto the floor and watched as Bidoof started to become attracted to the doll. Alex hinted that they should leave now before Bidoof notices them again. They swiftly took off down the road.

After five minutes of travelling, Alex noticed a small shack in the distance. He wondered if it was a hut where rangers and their trainers could rest and take a break. They were quiet common around the Lake and also in the Boatanic Gardens. Then as the continued to walk towards the hut, a medium sized star appeared from the lakes surface. In the water was lying a starfish like Pokemon with a red gem in the middle. Then it rotated 90 degrees and faced the two humans.

“Would you like to battle this Staryu?” Alex asked Garth.

Alex studied me for a few seconds before he looked down at the Beaver-Pokemon. Bidoof and their evolved form weren’t known for their smarts, they had the same mind set as the other Water Pokemon Psyduck. Now while it could learn a few good moves and its Moody ability was nothing to make fun of, I just had no need for the Pokemon, which was why I had made the choice to not capture it.

Anyway, the Bidoof was staring at me, its white eyes rounded in wonder as it looked up at me. I felt a sinking feeling that this Pokemon wouldn’t leave me along, and that I would have to toss it a Pokedoll to escape it, which in turn meant having to give up more money. While I did want to get away from the Pokemon I didn’t want to keep spending money. I only had just over seventeen thousand in my bank account devoted to my Pokemon. Since I had run out of Pokedolls it would cost me a five hundred to buy one from the ranger. Five hundred wasn’t a lot, but eventually it added up. Once I made it out of this Park run I would have to get some work done and ref some battles or judge some contests. Especially once I caught Frillish and any other Pokemon, but all would need some extensive training to take advantage of the abilities. Frillish would only take about seventy thousand, and that was pretty low compared to some Pokemon. My Snorlax alone, who was on this trip had set me back over two-hundred-thousand.

Alex nodded his head at me and pointed down the path we were on. I returned the gesture and made to follow, but a tugging on my pant leg held me rooted to the spot. I looked down to see that the Bidoof had sunk its two large front teeth in the pant leg and was letting go. I tugged the fabric away and heard a rip in response. I stepped back from the Bidoof as the Pokemon continued to study my intently.

“Looks like this Bidoof is a clingy one.” Alex indicated the intense Bidoof and looked off in the distance at something.

I glanced at the ranger but returned to my bag to get the required cash for a Pokedoll. It only took me a few seconds to come up with the amount needed and I passed the cash to the ranger without a word. I got the Pokedoll in exchange for the money and placed the plush toy on the ground in front of Bidoof. The Pokemon immediately became disinterested in me and turned its focus towards the toy.

Without a word myself and the ranger turned away from the Pokemon and sped down the trail. We stopped about twenty feet away from the now distracted Pokemon and continued along the path.

We had only been walking for about five minutes when the ranger turned to study a small wooden shack. It was far enough away that it made me wonder why caught his interest as I wasn’t surprised by the structure. There had to be a few such posts around each section of the park in case of emergency or bad weather. Next to all this water a storm could easily brew up and become powerful in a short amount of time, and without the proper equipment it wouldn’t be wise to be in that sort of weather.

Alex altered our path to stop by the building and we continued forward. We were almost to the hut when a Pokemon broke the surface of one of the nearby lakes. It was a light brown Pokemon with a blood-red gem in its center. With the telltale red gem and the star shaped body I knew we had wandered onto the path of a Staryu, one of the Pokemon I was looking for. I could barely contain my excitement, already I had run into a Staryu and Frillish and I still had two-thirds of me run left. It was looking to be a very profitable run.

“Would you like the battle this Staryu?” Alex questioned, as the Staryu turned to face us.

    “You have no idea.”

I plugged the Pokemon’s data into my Pokedex and started to formulate my plan of attack. I had four Pokemon in my party that I could use to battle this Staryu. I could immediately discount the use of Toxicroak because of its weakness to Psychic attacks. Once Staryu evolved to Starmie it would gain the additional type of Psychic, but for now it was only Water, and despite that it could still know a Psychic attack. One Psychic attack from Stayu upon Toxicroak would lower its health to a dangerous level and I couldn’t have that.

Because the Pokemon was also a basic type I couldn’t use Snorlax. Snorlax was simply a powerhouse and I had to respect his strength or he could potentially KO the Staryu with only an attack or two.

This meant that I could use either Slowking or Ludicolo in battle. But the problem with using Slowking was that it had a weakness to Ghost and Electric attacks, which Staryu were known to have used in battle. I didn’t want my Pokemon to suffer more damage than was needed so I decided that he wouldn’t work out, which left only Ludicolo for battle.

This process of though only took a few seconds and I felt myself reaching for his Pokedoll before I could complete the train of thought. I depressed the button in the center and a yellow and green Pokemon materialized from the red light that sprang from the Pokeball. Ludicolo flexed his green flipper-like hands and shouted a greeting a Staryu.

“Ludi, Ludi, Ludi,” the Pokemon chanted while hopping from one stubby leg to the next. He was clearly excited about the battle, his could never be stymied it seemed, but that was due in part to his Jolly nature.

“Alright, Ludicolo, that Staryu is our target. We want to catch it.” I pointed at the Staryu. “Let’s begin this battle with your Fake out and follow that up with a Thunder Punch move.”

I wanted to use Fake out because it would cause Pokemon to flinch if hit by the move, with the exception when a Pokemon used certain moves or had the proper ability. If the Pokemon flinched it would not only save my Pokemon from being attacked during the exchange and it had the added benefit of doing damage to the starfish Pokemon.

Thunder Punch was the only attack I would use to reduce the fighting attack of Staryu. It was a reasonably strong electric attack, but without a STAB boost and Ludicolo’s low attack it wouldn’t lower the health of Staryu too much that it would be dangerously close to being KO’ed. The attack also had the added bonus of a chance of paralyzing the Pokemon, which would be great, but was not factored into my plan because of the low rate of success.

“You have no idea,” Garth said.

Alex was pleased that they had encountered something worth while for Garth; the past couple of encounters had not tickled Garth fancies. Alex watched as Garth started to think, and he guessed that Garth was thinking about which Pokemon to use. Staryu was a pure Water Pokemon; however had a varied move pool, so choosing the right Pokemon was essential. From a quick glance over his Pokemon, Alex would have chosen Ludicolo mainly because its only weakness was Flying or Poison, types which Staryu didn’t learn. After minutes of thinking, Garth removed a Pokeball and threw it into the air.

The ball landed on the ground and a large Pokemon appeared from the white flash. It started to hop from each leg saying “Ludi, Ludi, Ludi.” Garth had gone for Ludicolo, which had to be the best bet in this battle. Garth called out to Ludicolo, “Alright, Ludicolo, that Staryu is our target. We want to catch it.” Garth pointed at the Staryu. “Let’s begin this battle with your Fake out and follow that up with a Thunder Punch move.”

Fake Out was a strong attack to start a battle off, it allowed the user to basically get a free hit in because of the flinching effect Fake Out had. Ludicolo chanted the same three words over again and then sped off towards Staryu. It leaped into the water and dived underneath the water. Staryu looked confused and didn’t know where the attack was coming from. Suddenly Ludicolo dived up behind Staryu and compressed Staryu with his hands. Staryu didn’t have much time to react and before it knew what had happened, Ludicolo had positioned himself in front of it.

Now Ludicolo was preparing his next attack. He raised his arm above the water and started to generate energy from his body. The energy circulated around the fist of Ludicolo, like a glove. Then small sparks started escape from the fist and within seconds, the fist was now covered in electricity. Ludicolo raced towards Staryu, with its hand held above the water, and slammed it down on the Starfish Pokemon. Staryu was sent plummeting underneath the water. Ludicolo was now a sitting duck; it couldn’t tell where the next attack was coming from.

All of a sudden, a strange force started to disrupt the waters. Seconds later, the water started to swirl around in a clockwise motion. Then the motion got faster and soon Ludicolo was trapped inside a large whirlpool. The whirlpool sent Ludicolo one way then the other, tossing the Mexican-like Pokemon about. Alex glanced over to Garth and wondered what he would do.

Ludicolo’s Fake Out worked exactly as it was supposed to. Ludicolo wasted no time leaping into the water and disappearing beneath the dark waters. The Staryu whirled about scanning the water to try and find its foe. But Ludicolo timed his attack perfectly and came up behind the starfish-Pokemon.

My Pokemon wasted no time in bringing his flipper together with strong force. The attack connected with the Water Pokemon, squeezing in for a brief second. Ludicolo dived back underneath the water to escape any retaliation and came up in front of me, still in the water and facing the Staryu.

Because of the quickness in which Ludicolo had move, Staryu was stunned by the development and was still getting its bearing. This confusion allowed Ludicolo to begin his next attack without being molested by the other Water type.

His raised his left arm and began to send energy to his fist, charging it while it pooled. It only took a few seconds before electricity began to spark around his fist. The energy pulsed a bright yellow, signaling it was ready to be used. Ludicolo then moved towards Staryu, narrowing the distance in only a few seconds, he slammed his fist into the center of the Pokemon. The electricity convulsed through the body of Staryu and pushed the Pokemon into the water, where it dived and remained hidden from view.

Ludicolo was an open target for the other Pokemon to hit with a powerful attack. Ludicolo was in a precarious position, and we both knew it. I was about to call my next command when I spotted Staryu’s next move. The waters around Ludicolo started to move with increasing speed each second until it formed a Whirlpool attack that bounced my Pokemon around like a rag doll.

Whirlpool wasn’t a strong attack by any means, and especially being used against Ludicolo, but it did have the advantage of trapping my Pokemon and limiting his movements. My plan of attack had to involve getting him out of the current mess.

“Ludicolo, you need to escape the Whirlpool. Use your Waterfall to disrupt the Whirlpool and fire off a Seedbomb around you.”

In my mind Waterfall was one of the few moves that could disrupt the rotation of Staryu’s attack enough to allow Ludicolo to escape and maneuver freely. Whirlpool operated by spinning the enemy Pokemon in a funnel of water, not only doing damage but disorienting the Pokemon at the same time. But the key was that the water was rotating, and without that rotation the attack would fall apart. By using Waterfall Ludicolo would summon up a curtain of rushing water. Waterfall was a vertical attack so in the best case it would knife through Staryu’s attack either disrupting it or slowing it down enough that Ludicolo could at least get away an attack without being tossed about. But just in case in the Waterfall didn’t work as planned, Ludicolo would have the Waterfall form up underneath him so that the force of the water would propel him into the air, escaping the rushing water at least temporary. Once free of the attack he would form up the emerald and yellow energy that formed the Seedbomb. He would structure the energy so that when it came into contact with a mass it would explode. Ludicolo and I didn’t know where the Staryu was so by using the Seedbomb Ludicolo could scatter elements of the attack so that it would strike the water in multiple places, hopefully at least dealing partial damage to the hidden Pokemon.

If this plan didn’t work at all then I wouldn’t lose much in terms of my strategy of battlng the Staryu. The Pokemon still couldn’t hit Ludicolo that hard and I could easily heal Ludicolo after or during the battle. But that didn’t mean Staryu was weaponless in its attacks on Ludicolo. It possessed both Pain Split and Signal Beam, both could do a good chunk of damage if used properly, Pain Split being the most harmful if Staryu had low health. An obvious Counter for the Pain Split would have been a Taunt move, but Ludicolo couldn’t learn that move. With that in mind, I had to try and end the battle before Staryu was able to use such a move on Ludicolo.

“Ludicolo, you need to escape the Whirlpool. Use your Waterfall to disrupt the Whirlpool and fire off a Seedbomb around you.” Garth said to his trapped Ludicolo.

Alex realized that by using a Whirlpool of his own, Ludicolo would create an opposite current which hopefully in the end would neutralize the whirlpool. If that failed, then Ludicolo would be sent flying out of Staryu's own Whirlpool by his own. Alex was certainly impressed by Garth's thinking.

Ludicolo started to spin around on a fixed point, in the middle of the whirlpool. He raised his hands in the air, summoning a barrier of water; swirling around him. Then the swirling water crashed down onto the whirlpool, counteracting the whirlpool. Slowly, the whirlpool started to slow down, it seemed that Whirlpool had worked. Ludicolo was now alone in the gentle water, looking underneath for the hidden Staryu.

Then Ludicolo raised his hands out in front of him and started to channel some energy. A small coconut-like orb slowly appeared in front of Ludicolo’s hands. The Grass Pokemon suddenly launched the coconut-like orb into the sky. Alex had assumed that Garth wanted to fish out the Staryu by using a move that can cover a huge area; for example Seed Bomb. The coconut-like orb splintered in the air, splitting up into small seeds; which plummeted towards the lake. The seed fell towards the lake surface, trying to find the hidden Staryu. Alex scanned the lake surface, hoping to see the Staryu. Maybe it had run away, or maybe it was still hiding.

Then suddenly, a light orange star appeared on the surface. It looked like it had taken some damage from the falling seeds, by the bruises across its body. Then Staryu looked directly at Ludicolo and suddenly fired a bolt of Thunder from its chest. The thunderbolt skidded across the waters face and was absorbed by Ludicolo’s body. Ludicolo cried out in pain as a current flowed through his body. The pain was over in seconds and luckily for Ludicolo, that Thunderbolt attack didn’t leave a mark of paralysis.

The Waterfall worked according to plan. I wasn’t entirely sure if the Waterfall would fully disrupt the swirling Whirlpool but it managed to slow the current enough that Staryu’s Whirlpool collapsed under the force exerted by Ludicolo.

“Awesome work,” I called to my Ludicolo.

With the water quieted, Ludicolo was able to focus his attention on the next move I had commanded, Seed Bomb. With the Staryu underwater it was one of the few moves that could achieve spread damage and hopefully hit the hidden Pokemon.

Ludicolo lifted his flipper in front of him and began to chant in the Pokemon language. In a short second a round orb of green and yellow energy started to form between his outstretched flipper. When it had grown to the size of a watermelon Ludicolo shot it into the air, where it exploded into a dozen smaller orbs that rained down upon the water, exploding upon contact with the liquid. At least one of the bombs must have hit because the Staryu surfaced a moment later, its brown skin showing signs of strain from the battle.

Staryu turned towards Ludicolo as it;s red gem began to glow white as the Pokemon built up a charge. Once enough energy had been channeled the Pokemon fired off a bolt of thunder that rippled across the water and entered the body of Ludicolo.

The pain from the Thunderbolt attack caused Ludicolo to cry out in pain as the electric current passed through his body, made all the worse because of the water.

A smart attack by the Staryu, which only cemented my desire to catch this powerful Water type. Ludicolo had took a fair amount of damage from the Electric attack, but he still had enough health to function and I had ways to heal him if the need arose. I only had to wear the Staryu down without knocking it out, Park rules forbade that method for some unknown reason.

“You’re doing good Ludicolo.” I consulted my Pokedex to review Ludicolo’s and Staryu’s moves before deciding on my next plan of attack. I discard a few options and ultimately decided on a Grass attack. “Start things off with your Substitute and follow that up with your Mega Drain.” Mega Drain was weak enough that it should do a nice amount of damage without placing the Staryu in undue risk.

I wanted Substitute up to reduce any damage that Ludicolo could take and it would further benefit Ludicolo by not allowing Staryu to hit it with any status moves. It would also protect him from any after effects, like a paralyzing chance from the Thunderbolt Staryu had just fired off. Mega Drain was to heal my Pokemon and stack more damage on Staryu.

If all went well then Staryu would be left with only a small amount of health and I could probably attempt to capture it next turn. If not, then I would still have a few options in capturing the Staryu.

And if I did capture this Staryu then it would be a good step to my dominance of Water type Pokemon. Staryu was but one Pokemon, but it was a signature Pokemon among Water masters and gym leaders. Despite my long career as a trainer, I hadn’t ever owned one of the elusive Pokemon. But once I added both the Jellicent and Starmie to my team I would teach the Pokemon a variety of moves and immediately place them into my gym. I didn’t know who I would remove to place the two into the lineup, but it would be done. The only other guy I was looking to add was a Kingdra, anybody else was a bonus.

“Start things off with your Substitute and follow that up with your Mega Drain.” Garth commanded.

Substitute was a very common move, being learnt by almost every Pokemon. Despite its commonness, Substitute was still a very useful move. It created a decoy of the Pokemon and used it as a shield against incoming attacks. Even thou it takes a quarter of your Pokemon’s health, Substitute did have a major advantage. If the Pokemon was behind a substitute, any status inflicting moves would not work, ideal to keep your team status free.

Ludicolo, on the command of Garth, started to close its eyes and focus. His eyes were squinted and his body was trembling. Then Ludicolo flew his arms into the arm and suddenly created a real life clone of him. However there was one difference between the clone and Ludicolo, the clone had no emotion, no movement. It was like a body without a soul. Once the move had been completed, Ludicolo felt a burning sensation around his stomach. In order to create the clone, Ludicolo had to use a lot of energy from within.

Staryu looked towards the newly created clone and then started to spin around on the spot. Alex was intrigued, was Staryu going to attack the clone in close combat, or destroy it in some other way. Then suddenly Staryu disappeared from sight. The water where Staryu was previously had no disturbance; Staryu had not disappeared under water. Alex started too looked around the lake, hoping Staryu had not given up and wondered away. Then all of sudden, Staryu reappeared; however this time right behind Ludicolo and the Clone. Before the clone was facing Staryu, however this time Staryu was facing the back of the original Ludicolo. It was a smart move, manoeuvring itself to be behind Ludicolo and almost ignore the Substitute was there.

Staryu’s red orb, implanted in the middle, started to glow. Staryu was preparing an attack, ready to catch Ludicolo off guard. However as Staryu was powering up the attack, Ludicolo glanced behind him and caught sight of the Starfish Pokemon. Staryu quickly fired off the beam, swirling around through the air. Rainbow colour strands split off and were directed towards Staryu. This attack was Signal Beam, a powerful special Bug move. Ludicolo quickly grabbed the substitute and tried to place it in front of the attack. The beam collided with the substitute, which was half way in front of Ludicolo. However some of the small strands evaded the substitute and collided into Ludicolo.

Ludicolo watched as its own clone sank into the water. Then the Mexican looking Pokemon held out his hands, with his palms facing Staryu. His palms started to glow in a bright green colour. Two small laser-like beams shot out of his palms and connected with Staryu’s body and formed a link between each Pokemon. Ludicolo started to sap some of the energy from Staryu, replenishing itself in the process. Mega Drain was a move that sapped health from your opponent and reused it for your own Pokemon. There were many varieties of the move, for example: Absorb, Giga Drain and Leech Seed.

Staryu span away from the two chords and retreated a couple of paces backwards. Ludicolo had managed to absorb a lot of energy and it showed on Staryu. However Alex was wondering whether Staryu had any more tricks up for show.

    OOC: @gmandiddy - Park Ball

    ----
No sooner had Ludicolo managed to deliver the Substitute had Staryu already come up with a deft counter attack. I winced in pain for my Pokemon as the starfish Pokemon disappeared underneath the clear waves to pop up directly behind Ludicolo, putting Ludicolo between it and the clone, allowing for the wild Water type to deliver a powerful move of his own. I saw the eyes of Ludicolo widened when he turned around and spotted the Pokemon behind him. He started to try a move the Substitute in front of his body, but the Staryu was quicker. Its red orb shimmered with energy before a bright, multicolored beam of energy shot from the gem.

Ludicolo grabbed the Substitute and tried to impose the clone between it and the Signal Beam, but only succeed partially. Most of the Bug attack clipped the Substitute, but some of the energy strands went by the decoy to strike Ludicolo on the cry. Ludicolo’s beaked faced distorted in a mask of pain as the toll from Substitute and Signal Beam built up. Even though the Substitute took only a portion of the damage it was enough the substitute started to fade, remnants sinking into the water where the energy would eventually dissipate.

Ludicolo pushed past the pain and started on the Mega Drain attack. He pointed his flippers in the direction of the sienna colored Staryu and began to chant intently, the flippers glowing a lighter green as he channeled the energy into his limbs. Two beams of energy shot from his flippers to strike the Staryu on two of its limbs. The Water Pokemon tried to pull away, but the energy strands kept it in place as Ludicolo absorbed some of Staryu’s life energy, some of which faded away and some merging with Ludicolo’s own life force, healing him.

The Staryu broke away from the Mega Drain as the attack faded, swimming a few feet backwards away from Ludicolo, its once glossy coat now showing the strain of the battle. It’s body heaved as its energy reservoir faded, the red gem growing duller. Ludicolo was in better shape than Staryu, but he too was showing fatigue from the battle. I had to wrap this battle up before something bad happened.

“Time to finish this battle off, Ludicolo.” I encouraged my Pokemon, trying to keep his hopes up. “I want you to go ahead with another Thunder Punch!”

Thunder Punch should do just enough damage that once I threw a Park Ball I would have a good enough chance of capturing the Pokemon. As Ludicolo’s green fist changed to yellow as he gathered the electricity, I reached into my bag and pulled out on of my empty Park Balls. Once the Thunder Punch hit Staryu I would toss the capture device at the first possible opportunity.

“Time to finish this battle off, Ludicolo.” Garth encouraged his Pokemon. Alex knew that a Pokemon would only work as hard as they can if they are give support by their own Trainer. “I want you to go ahead with another Thunder Punch!”

Ludicolo, spurred on by this praise, nodded and looked towards the floating starfish. He started to swim through the water, gradually generating speed. Then the Grass and Water Pokemon raised his right arm above the water. The energy gathered as he was swimming was being focused into his raised fist. As before, the fist started to glow and some excess pieces of energy spat out in the form of electricity. Ludicolo’s fist looked like an electric bulb with a high voltage surging through it. Staryu looked up at the oncoming attack and suddenly started to spin around in the water. The motion of the water started to speed up, water spinning around in a clockwise motion. Then Staryu’s red orb started to glow. The glow had an effect on the water around it and the water suddenly rose into the air. Ludicolo, who was charging towards Staryu, was baffled by the events taken place a couple of seconds ago. However remembering what his trainer said, Ludicolo carried on towards Staryu.

Staryu’s red orb suddenly stopped glowing and the water stopped. Right in front of Staryu was now a wall made of water, hoping to decrease the power of the oncoming attack from Ludicolo. Ludicolo slammed his fist through the newly generated water wall. The water slowed down the movements from Ludicolo, however did not stop him. Eventually the charged up fist collided into Staryu, causing the Starfish Pokemon some problems. The water wall suddenly faded after the attack. If the water wall had not absorbed some power from that attack, Staryu probably would have been seriously hurt. Alex glanced towards his left and noticed Garth holding a small ball with the initials P.B engraved on the front. Garth threw the ball towards Staryu. The ball glided through the air, however was falling short from the target. Ludicolo, who had been keeping an eye on the floating ball, dived through the air and tapped the ball towards Staryu. The ball landed on the starfish Pokemon and absorbed it inside. The ball floated on the lake bed, just sitting there. It was hard to tell if it was rolling around, however seconds later a satisfying click was heard. Ludicolo swam towards the ball and picked it up, swimming back to its trainer. Like a dog, Ludicolo rolled the ball towards Garth. Alex looked at the Park Ball and picked it up placing it in his bag. He turned to Garth and said, “Ready when you are.”

Staryu tried to counter Ludicolo’s Thunder Punch with a modified Waterfall, but Ludicolo simply crashed through and connected his flipper with the body of Staryu. The Staryu spasmed as the electricity coursed through its body. After a second or two the Pokemon fell back in the water, momentarily stunned. I tossed the ball right then, hoping to capture it.

After a few tense seconds the ball clicked, the Staryu would be mind. Ludicolo grabbed the Park Ball and brought it over to us one shore. Alex picked up the Park Ball and placed it into his bag. “Ready when you are?” he asked.

“Sure, let’s get going. I am anxious to find out what else I can get.”

“Sure, let’s get going. I am anxious to find out what else I can get.” Garth said.

Alex nodded in agreement and walked ahead, towards the small wooden shack. Of course Alex wasn’t going to rest in the shack; however inside the shack was one of the maps of the Great Lakes. The map showed every single piece of information a visitors would like to know, including rarity and Pokemon hotspots. Once they had reached the shack, Alex walked in and looked at the small map on the wall. Alex started to analyse the map, hoping to find a place in which his trainer could catch some more interesting Pokemon.

Meanwhile, whilst both trainers where examining the map, a fish Pokemon slowly surfaced the lake. It looked directly at the two trainers and started to splash water, hoping to grab their attention. Alex took a quick short break from looking at the map and noticed the Pokemon splashing water. He turned to Garth and said, “Wow look a Finneon, it looks like it wants to battle. Want to battle it?”

Alex led us to one of the many ranger shacks that dotted the park range. Once we got there Alex entered and brought out a map. He was in the process of studying it when some splashing caught our attention. A small Finneon was playing in the water.

“Wow, look a Finneon, it looks like it wants to battle. Want to battle it?”

“No thanks.” It wasn’t a Pokemon many trainers had, so that made it somewhat intriguing to me, but the problem was that a battle Pokemon it was limited in its potential. It couldn’t readily raise any of stats and it lacked the necessary power to dish out steady damage.

    “No thanks," Garth replied.

Alex looked down at the small fish Pokemon and waved his hand, saying good bye before turning his back with Garth and started to walk away. However as they took another couple of paces forward, Finneon fired a beam of water towards them, soaking both of their shoes and trouser legs. Alex faced Garth and said that if they were going to escape this Finneon, he would have to purchase a PokeDoll. Garth exchanged some money for a doll and threw the doll into the water. The doll bobbed on the lakes surface and suddenly was whisked away by the Finneon.

They continued to walk down the path, which circled the entire lake. Alex looked up and noticed a sign reading: "More Lakes -->"
After discussing it with Garth, they agreed to go to another lake; hoping that there were more rare Pokemon there. As the set off, a small Pokemon escaped from the bushes and ran up towards them.

It was a Bidoof however different from the previous one we saw. Alex turned his head to Garth and asked, "Would you want to battle this Bidoof?"

Alex chose a path and we walked down it for a few minutes, both of us keeping an eye out for any Pokemon that I could possibly catch. After we decided to head to another lake we were on a path that led there when a small brown Pokemon came running out of a bush. It scampered over to use and looked up us.

“Would you want to battle this Bidoof?”

“Nope, let’s see if it leaves us alone. If not, here’s some cash.”

I didn’t want to part with five hundred in cash, but I also didn’t want to catch a Bidoof. I did eventually want one to join the ranks of my other Pokemon, but as of right now I didn’t need it.

“Nope, let’s see if it leaves us alone. If not, here’s some cash.” Garth said.

Alex nodded and watched the Bidoof run towards them. Then at the last minute, before Bidoof collided into Alex and Gary, it took a right turn and bounded into a patch of flowers. Bidoof bounced up and down chasing after some of the butterflies that lived amongst the flowers. Alex smiled and lead Garth towards the lakes.

They walked down a path, which parted the small wooded area. Trees hung over the path and blocked some of the sun's rays. As they walked, Alex looked into the forest and wondered what strange Pokemon lived in there. If he was on his own, he would go off track and venture into the forest, hoping to find one of the small rare lakes where rare Pokemon live. However Alex had a trainer and it was his job to look after him and stay on the roads and paths.

They exited the wood and found them selves in front of another large lake. Alex looked ahead and noticed a large light-blue bipedal, amphibious Pokémon. It was a Quagsire.

Alex turned to Garth and asked, "Would you like to battle this Quagsire?"

The Bidoof must have heard my words because it charged a moment later. But at the last second before a collision it veered off and disappeared into some brush, where it promptly proceeded to chase some butterflies, sending the small bugs into the air as they tried to escape.

Alex directed my attention to the path he wanted to take and we set of once more. Unlike the previous routes this one snaked its way through a heavily wooded area. Alex looked longingly into the woods, but kept to the path.

We eventually exited to the sight of another large lake. There was a Quagsire on the shore rooting among the ground searching for food. Alex turned to me and pointed at the Pokemon.

“Would you like to battle this Quagsire?”

“Nah, it would only be a situational Pokemon, and I don’t need another one of those. Let’s move on.”
