    Garth was silent for a moment, watching the Toxicroak goad his Tentacruel into a state of rage. This could be a problem - from what I knew of Tentacruel, they were support Pokemon, knowing moves like Toxic and Acupressure. If the Water-type had been goaded into direct attacks, its battle effectiveness would be severely limited.

    “’Cruel, strike back with your Hidden Power move," Garth finally said.

    Tentacruel responded with a guttural call. It stayed motionless for a couple seconds, and then a shimmering light-blue orb appeared in midair over its head. The orb slowly descended and some of the Water-type's tentacles wrapped around it. The tentacles subtly applied pressure to the orb, and I just managed to see a blast of air pressure head towards the Toxicroak when Tentacruel broke the orb open. The Hidden Power must have been Flying-typed - perfect for taking on the Toxicroak. The only way it could have been better was if the Hidden Power was Psychic-typed.

    The attack struck the Toxicroak, knocking it backwards. The frog croaked in pain, but managed to take the attack and avoid falling over. Dark energy gathered around its fists, and the frog darted forwards. It crossed the ground between them rather quickly, and punched Tentacruel with each fist, one right after the other. Tentacruel warbled unhappily, but the Toxicroak didn't stick around - it jumped backwards, getting some distance. Apparently it didn't want to stay close to the jellyfish Pokemon for any long periods of time.

    The blast of wind energy knocked Toxicroak back a few feet. Toxicroak croaked in pain but managed to withstand the damage and remain upright. Around each fist small patches of dark energy began to materialize as Toxicroak rushed forward to attack Tentacruel. He was upon Tentacruel in a flash, striking my Pokemon with each fist before leaping backwards to avoid any retaliate blow from Tentacruel.

    This showed that Toxicroak had gained a sort of respect for Tentacruel, honoring the space he occupied. Normally I could use this to my advantage, but because Tenta didn’t have that many effective moves against ‘Croak I was severely limited, not counting the Taunt.

    I withdrew two Pokeballs from my belt. “’Tentacruel, good job. Let somebody else handle this.” ‘Cruel made a welcome noise before being recalled into his temporary home. “Gyarados, it’s your turn.” I tossed the standard red and white Pokeball in the air and a moment the long serpent-like body of Gyarados took form. His long blue body was coiled too take up less room, but he still managed to crush a few trees with his weight. No matter, I didn’t intend to use him for that long, just a couple moves.

    Gyarados bared his long fangs at Toxicroak and roared a challenge. He had to be tired from that fight with Alomomola, but he wasn’t showing it now. “Gyarados, don’t get too attached, you will not out for long. You need your rest anyway. I want you to start this battle off with Taunt followed by your Thunder Wave move.”

    Gyarados always looked fiercesome, but somehow he made it seem less so. His face almost took on a comical expression, if that was possible. And I could have sworn that the sound he released was his equivalent of a laugh. If that didn’t make Toxicroak mad I didn’t know what more I could do.

    After trying the Taunt attack the tri-pronged bone structure on his forehead started to flicker with a soft yellow light as he built up a static charge from which to use the Thunder Wave. Because he wasn’t an electric type it would take him slightly longer to build up enough static to form the attack when the thunderstorm from earlier had aided. I would have Rain Dance if I thought it be of benefit, but Toxicroak would gain better benefits with it than I, so that was out of the question.

    When enough static had been collected and channeled, Gyarados released the attack. It appeared as a wave of electricity that spread from the body of the Water type.

    “Tentacruel, good job. Let somebody else handle this," my Trainer said as he pulled out a pair of PokeBalls. One of them emitted a red beam which struck Tentacruel in the centre of its body. The entirety of the Poison-type's mass turned into red plasma, which then flew back into the open capture device.

    “Gyarados, it’s your turn,” Garth ordered. The other ball opened up and Gyarados was released once more. It was tightly coiled up, but still managed to knock a couple of trees down. I winced - a couple of trees here and there was fine, but if the Flying-type knocked down too many there'd be trouble. The Atrocious Pokemon roared a challenge at the Toxicroak and bared its fangs. The frog looked a little taken back, but it was still very much determined.

    “Gyarados, don’t get too attached, you will not out for long. You need your rest anyway. I want you to start this battle off with Taunt followed by your Thunder Wave move," Garth commanded.

    The long, sinuous Pokemon relaxed a little bit and began laughing. The laughter still sounded horrible, almost as bad as its roaring, but the intended effect was different. Gyarados roared at things it considered a challenge, or at least amusing. Laughter was reserved for when something was not even worth fighting. It was an obvious taunt, but it appeared to work on the Toxicroak nonetheless. The frog's fists balled up in rage and it narrowed its eyes at the Gyarados.

    Seeing that the frog was sufficiently enraged, Gyarados started to charge the Thunder Wave. Electricity bounced around the crown on the top of his head, growing larger with every passing second. When the attack was ready, the sparks moved out towards the Fighting-type in a pulse, like an electromagnetic wave. The frog stared helplessly at the incoming electricity.

    And then it grinned. The Toxicroak curled up into a ball and white energy wrapped around its body, sheathing it completely. The Thunder Wave passed harmlessly around the white shield, and when the attack had faded away the Protect disappeared in a flash of light. The Toxicroak chuckled and laughed, jumping from one foot to another and pointing at Gyarados.

    "Wow, that Toxicroak is smart," I said, impressed. "It must have a Nature that resists Taunting moves, but it pretended to be Taunted so that it wouldn't be paralyzed."

    The Taunt attacked seemed to take effect on Toxicroak. The Pokemon narrowed his eyes in anger as his fists began to ball up. But by this time the Thunder Wave had been sufficiently charged that the wave of electricity was already moving towards the Poison type Pokemon. Toxicroak stared at Thunder Wave, a defeated look on his face. That was until he grinned.

    Just before the Thunder Wave reached him he curled up into a small ball as he was completely sheathed in a coat of white energy, it was a Protect move. The Thunder Wave moved around the Pokemon like he wasn’t there, gliding past harmlessly. When the attack passed by fully, Toxicroak jumped to his feet and began to laugh as he bounced from foot to foot, obviously pleased with himself.

    “Wow, that Toxicroak is smart, Carter said, I could tell the Pokemon had made a good impression on him with its quick thinking. “It must have a nature that resists Taunting moves, but it pretended to be Taunted so that it wouldn’t be paralyzed.”

    “So it seems,” I said dryly. I knew there was a possibility that it had a nature that resisted the effect of Taunt, but I couldn’t pass up a chance to inflict Thunder Wave on it. “That was totally wrong,” I yelled at the Toxicroak. Since that plan had gone up in flames I would have to move onto a different one entirely. But it was one that could backfire if I didn’t play it correctly. I recalled Gyarados and sent out someone I was hoping I didn’t have to use, Ludicolo.

    With a flash, the pineapple resembling Pokemon entered the foray, still cheerful as ever. He grinned wickedly and turned to face the Toxicroak, waving a broad flipper at him. “Your turn, I don’t want to send out anybody else so let’s get this over with. Start this battle off with your Fake Out and Leech Seed.”

    The idea was to slowly whittle away at his health until he was in the right range for me to capture him at. To start the Fake Out attack, Ludicolo clapped his flippers together, causing a quick sonicboom that moved at a high speed towards Toxicroak. Even if it missed or failed, Ludicolo should have a few extra seconds to use Leech Seed while the Frog Pokemon tried to dodge.

    After the Fake Out attack was sent at Toxicroak, Ludicolo had to use his Leech Seed attack. Unlike most Grass types who learned Leech Seed through level up moves, Ludicolo had to be taught by breeder. Not only did breeder based moves tend to be expensive, they also were a strain on both Trainer and Pokemon, who had to master the move. Depending on the BM, some moves took less time than others. This was usually based on the attack type or if the Pokemon learning it was naturally able to use moves like it. In Ludicolo’s case, I had taught him four different breeding moves. Three if which were Grass and the other was Electric. Because Ludicolo was part Grass type it had only taken him about a week to learn each Grass attack, while the Electric one had taken a good three weeks.

    The small tree-like structure atop Ludicolo’s head started to change colors from brown to white. In a few seconds a small had sprouted from the tree. My Pokemon took a quick second to aim the brown seed then fired it at Toxicroak.

    If the small seed connected, green, thorny vines would sprout all over the body of Toxicroak, possibly hindering his movement while sapping health at the same time.

    “So it seems,” Garth replied to me. He didn't sound happy about what had just gone down, and it turned out I was right. “That was totally wrong,” he yelled at the Toxicroak, which was still dancing from one foot to the other. The frog stopped dancing and poked its tongue out at Garth before chuckling loudly. Garth returned Gyarados and summoned out Ludicolo. The Grass-type was as jolly as ever - it even gave a happy greeting wave to its opponent. The Toxicroak looked a little miffed.

    “Your turn, I don’t want to send out anybody else so let’s get this over with. Start this battle off with your Fake Out and Leech Seed,” my Trainer commanded.

    Ludicolo suddenly and quickly clapped his hands together. A sonicboom or air pressure blast or something erupted from the Grass-type and blasted into the Toxic Mouth Pokemon, knocking it over. While the frog struggled to get up, the top of Ludicolo's hat started to glow bright white. Garth's Pokemon lowered its head, taking careful aim, and the brown Leech Seed shot through the air. The Toxicroak got to its feet, but the seed projectile wrapped around its right leg, securing it to the ground. The frog grunted and tried to pull its leg free, but the Leech Seed wasn't budging.

    The Toxicroak grumbled unhappily, but still had a backup plan. Its red throat-sac expanded, and it spat a glob of purple poison through the air towards Ludicolo. The Sludge Bomb hissed and left a small trail of smoke through the air. If Garth acted quickly, he could dodge the attack, although knowing the Toxicroak it had a backup plan already.

    The blast of wind from Fake Out collided with Toxicroak and sent the smaller Pokemon reeling from the force. By the time he had recovered from the blow the Leech Seed had already been fired. The seed hit his foot with a soft thunk and sprouted. vines. Some of the vines sank into the ground to snare Toxicroak while the others wrapped around his leg. The frog grunted as the thorns bit into his leg and began to sap energy from him.

    Toxicroak croaked something again before turning to face the cause of his current predicament, my Ludicolo. The red throat-sac bulged outward, and a moment later the Pokemon fired globs of thick purple poison at Ludicolo.

    This could hurt Ludicolo if it connected, especially since Ludicolo was a Grass type. Unfortunate for me, or Ludicolo in this case, I didn’t have Protect. I had on numerous occasions needed Protect or Detect, but whenever I went to the market to purchase TMs I always forgot. More than a few battles were influenced by more oversight, and it would seem this would be another.

    While Toxicroak had to deal with issues sprouting from his drop in speed, Ludicolo didn’t, but that didn’t make Sludge Bomb slow. And the chances of slow Ludicolo dodging were slim in my opinion, so I had to use something else fast. I could have used Substitute to block, like I had done previously, but the substitute would shatter instantly and wouldn’t serve that great a purpose. Another possible route would be to use Rain Dance to up the speed of Ludicolo dramatically. But that was a double edged sword; if Ludicolo could get the Rain Dance off in time, and that was a big if, I might be able to dodge, but even after that, Toxicroak would be able to heal and Leech Seed wouldn’t be able to drain enough of his energy. My final option were to use one of Ludicolo’s moves to counter act the Sludge Bomb.

    If I chose a Water typed attack I had to be careful otherwise the Toxicroak could heal itself using the water. But if I used a Grass type move there was a good chance the Sludge Bomb would pass right through it due to its type effectiveness. The way I saw it, I had only once chance to succeed.

    “Risk time, Ludicolo. Use your Waterfall to create a wall in front of you, then use Thunder Punch on Toxicroak.”

    Normally summoning water without a body of it nearby was be pretty difficult for even the best Water types to accomplish. Luckily, since we were near a lake and high up in the snowy mountains, water was everywhere. It might not have collected in visible bodies, but it permeated the air and covered the ground. All Ludicolo had to do was focus that water right in front of him then shoot it skyward to create the wall.

    It was risky, but probably my best chance.

    “Risk time, Ludicolo. Use your Waterfall to create a wall in front of you, then use Thunder Punch on Toxicroak," Garth said.

    I shot a side-long look at the man. I would have expected him to order a Protect or even a Substitute, but perhaps he hadn't taught Ludicolo those moves. It was either that or he didn't want to tire his Pokemon out, but I would have thought a stamina drain would have been preferable to a health-point hit.

    Ludicolo raised its arms, and water floated up and around from the ground and the trees. It took the form of a veil in front of the Grass-type, and Ludicolo started running towards the Toxicroak. The Sludge Bomb hit the Waterfall veil and hissed evilly, but most of the poison was deflected into the ground, away from Garth's Pokemon.

    When Ludicolo was close, it held its fist back and small electrical darts began playing around its arm. Ludicolo crashed into Toxicroak and then punched it hard in the Leech Seeded leg, dropping the Wild Pokemon to one knee. Toxicroak retaliated by Headbutting Ludicolo in the chest, knocking the Grass-type backwards a little bit.

    The frog was starting to look a bit tired. If Garth wasn't careful, the continual draining of the Leech Seed would cause the Toxic Mouth Pokemon to faint, and that'd render it uncatchable.

    The veil of water in front of Ludicolo worked for the most part as most of the poison was deflected into the ground and away from Ludicolo, although some did strike him. When the last of the poison disappeared, Ludicolo was running towards Toxicroak, his fists starting to shower sparks as he pooled electricity there for the Thunder Punch attack.

    Ludicolo slammed into the body of Toxicroak and punch the frog Pokemon right in the leg where the Leech Seed vines had sprouted. It was a smart move on my Pokemon’s part. That leg was already weak from the strain of the Grass attack, that blow just added to it.

    Toxicroak grunted and fell to one knee, but not before Headbutting Ludicolo in the gut to force him back. The Poison type was now panting pretty hard, it was clear he was running out of energy to battle, that meant I couldn’t attack it any longer. I had to end this quickly.

    “Ludicolo, heal yourself with Synthesis.” While Ludicolo lifted his face skyward as he began to draw in the sunlight that he would convert into energy I focused my attention on the Pokemon in front of me.

    At the most I had about two chances to catch it, this would be my fist. I reached into my bag and pulled out my Hyperball. I pressed the button to make it normal sized then I chucked it at Toxicroak.

    “Ludicolo, heal yourself with Synthesis,” Garth ordered.

    The Grass-type took a step back and held its arms up, palms out. The Ludicolo's hat began to glow bright yellow, and I could almost see the Pokemon become healthier. Unfortunately, the Toxicroak was on the ball too - it threw its hand forwards and the sheer air pressure blasted Ludicolo off its feet.

    Garth didn't notice, or at least it didn't look like he did. He was busy pulling out a Hyper Ball. It expanded in his hand and he tossed it towards the Fighting-type. The sphere tapped the frog on its trapped leg and the Toxic Mouth Pokemon was absorbed inside in a flash of red light. The Hyper Ball shook on the ground for a couple seconds before stilling and emitting a please tone.

    "Congratulations on the capture," I said, somewhat jealously. My big brother was a Fighting-type trainer, and I knew for a fact he didn't have a Toxicroak. This Pokemon would have made a fantastic gift.

    Ludicolo got to his feet and chuckled happily, dancing from foot to foot. I smiled at the Grass-type before turning back to Garth. "So, do you want to start making our way back to the gate, or keep going further up into these mountains?"

    I watched as Toxicroak was absorbed by the red light that signaled a Pokemon being called into a Pokeball. The ball fell to the ground and started to wiggle as Toxicroak struggled to free himself. A few seconds later the Pokeball dinged and lay still; Toxicroak had just been captured.

    "Congratulations on the capture; so, do you want to start making our way back to the gate, or keep going further up into these mountains?" Carter asked after smiling at Ludicolo.

    Ludicolo was was bouncing from foot to foot all excited about capturing the new guy. "Nice, Ludi', knew you could do it." I recalled him to the Pokeball and turned to Carter. "Nope, time to bounce. Let's head towards the gate."

    "Nice, Ludi, knew you could do it," Garth congratulated his Pokemon. He held out the Grass-type's Poke Ball and returned the Ludicolo while I walked over and picked up the Hyper Ball. When I walked back, Garth told me he was ready to start heading back. I nodded, and together we turned around and started heading back. I pulled out my PDA and opened up the GPS, and surprise surprise we were actually fairly close to the gate.

    We reached the lake and turned left, in the direction of the entrance. Kyogre was nowhere to be seen - it had probably gone off hunting or something. There was a different Pokemon waiting for us in its place on the beach, though - a blue-and-cream coloured crocodile with red spikes on its head and tail. The Croconaw snapped its jaw excitedly when it saw us, and it thumped its legs up and down. Croconaw had a reputation for being overly enthusiastic, especially in battle.

    "We might have to run fast from this one if you don't want it," I muttered to Garth.

    Carter nodded at my choice had pulled out his PDA, presumably to get our location. We traveled back down dirt path to the crystal clear waters of the lake. We turned left and made to follow a different path back to the gate, instead of traversing the lake like we had earlier. But a Pokemon was blocking our way, its was a Croconaw. Croconaw were blue with an egg shaped pattern across its abdomen. When the red-spiked Pokemon saw us he snapped his jaws excitedly and looked us over.

    "We might have to run fast from this one if you don't want it," Carter said.

    "Run," I said without hesistation. "I can buy a doll if needed."

    OOC: @AmericanTreeFrog yeah, I was intending to do that. There's still one more thing you may want to battle.

    ~~~~~
    "Run," Garth replied quickly. "I can buy a doll if needed."
    The Croconaw started snapping its jaws even more eagerly, and I knew those things possessed the force to bite through car doors. Definitely not something I wanted to be on the wrong end of. Something in the Water-type's eyes told me it wasn't going to let us go without a fight.
    "It's probably safest," I said nervously, and I passed a Hippopotas-shaped plush toy to my Trainer. He exchanged it for a wad of cash that I tucked away into my pocket, and he threw it towards the Wild Pokemon. The Croconaw immediately started ripping the poor toy apart.
    "That's not going to last for long," I continued. "Let's get going before it gets bored."
    I led Garth away at a quick walk, intending to get as far away from the Water-type as possible. The GPA said we were only half an hour's walk away from the gate, and the sun was beginning to dip, so hopefully we'd get back before nightfall. If we were lucky, we wouldn't run into any more dangerous Pokemon.
    Our next Encounter was promising in that regard. A white and blue bird circled over us a called a greeting. I whistled back to it, smiling. I loved birds, even seagulls.
    "How about a Wingull?" I asked Garth.
    The Croconaw was still watching us with eager eyes, his jaws snapping excitedly. “It’s probably safest,” Carter said nervously, passing me a small Hippopotas plush doll. I gave him five hundred in return and grabbed the doll. I threw it at the Pokemon, who rushed it and immediately started to tear at the doll. I could give that Water Pokemon something, it was a vigorous little guy. The trainer who captured it would have no easy feat training it. “That’s not going to last for long. Let’s get going before it gets bored.”
    “Agreed.” I didn’t want to stick around with the tyke.
    Carter set off at a fast pace as we moved away from the Croconaw and towards the gate. We hadn’t been walking more than a few minutes when we saw a circling Wingull. The Pokemon whistled at us and Carter returned the sound.
    “How about a Wingull?”
    “Nah, not in the market currently.”
    "Nah, not in the market currently," Garth replied.
    "Somehow, I didn't think you would be," I grunted. "Let's just move on - maybe it won't follow us."
    A path leading inland was just up ahead, and it led in the general direction of the entrance gates, so I decided to lead Garth down it. Hopefully as we left the lake behind, the Wingull would leave us alone too. Well, that wasn't the case. The bird continued to follow us, circling high above. Finally, I grunted exasperatedly.
    "It ain't going anywhere," I said disgusted to my Trainer. "Chuck me some money for a doll or it's going to escort us the entire way back."
    He did as I asked, passing me a wad of bills. I threw a doll backwards into the grass, and the Wingull swooped, following the plush toy. I nodded to my Trainer, and we broke into a jog, hoping to get away before the Wingull tired of the toy. This time, we were more successful. However, we stumbled across another Pokemon in our haste to get away - a Piplup was asleep in a nest of coiled grass, just off to the side of the path.
    "If you don't want this, I suggest we sneak past quietly," I muttered to Garth.
    So we snaked our way through a path that ended at the gates. But as we walked down the trail we could still here the cries from the Wingull high above. I glanced up and the Pokemon was still circling, watching us in curiosity.
    “It ain’t going anywhere. Chuck me some money for a doll or it’s going to escort us the entire way back,” Carter said, disgust in his tone.
    “Man, these Pokemon are going to make me broke.” I passed the ranger some more bills and tossed the Pokedoll behind and away from us. The Wingull dived the toy fearlessly. Carter nodded to me and broke into a jog.
    I followed and we escaped the Wingull, only to encounter a Piplup asleep next to the path.”
    “If you don’t want this, I suggest we sneak past quietly.”
    “Couldn’t agree more.” I pulled out a wad of cash just to make sure.
    "Couldn't agree more," Garth said to me. Together, we carefully tiptoed past the sleeping bird, and luckily no twigs snapped like I was expecting. We got past the bird safely, and five minutes later the gates were visible.
    "Well, we're almost back," I said offhandedly.
    Off to the left was a large blue mound, that I only took semi-interest in. I had no idea what it was, but after the Expedition I was tired and just wanted to relax. It was only when the lump began to move that it clicked in my mind that it was probably a Pokemon. I watched as it unfolded into a large frog with strange circular wart-like bubbles all over its body. The frog ribbet-ed, and the sound caused a localised earthquake.
    "Well, that's an interesting way to end a run," I said. "Feel like trying to take on a Seismitoad, Garth?"
    We safely creeped past the sleeping Piplup and continued down the path without being harassed. Five minutes later the gate was in sight, it had been a long trek but we had finally made it safely back.
    "We're almost back," Carter said aside to me.
    Off to the left of the path was a giant blue stone, which I thought was interesting but paid it no heed as it had been a long day. But to my surprise the stone moved and a moment later it had unfolded its body to reveal a large frog Pokemon. It pretty much towered over us, it put Toxicroak to shame in terms of size. The Frog ribbited at us in greeting and I could have sworn I felt the ground around us shake.
    "Well, that's an interesting way to end a run," Carter said. "Feel like trying to take on a Seismitoad, Garth?"
    "It's been a long day, Carter. Let's get out of here."
    OOC @AmericanTreeFrog Alright, run's done. Hope you had fun and will come back sometime.
    ~~~~~

    "It's been a long day, Carter. Let's get out of here," Garth said, making his answer pretty clear. I nodded and we walked past the Seismitoad, which made no attempt to chase us. It laid down on its side and promptly went to sleep.

    When we arrived at the gate, I pulled the three balls I had containing Garth's captured Pokemon and handed them to him one at a time - the Psyduck, the Alomomola, and the Toxicroak. I nodded one last time to him and clapped him on the shoulder.

    "Alright, I'll catch you around sometime man," I said, and as I did so the gate swung open. Garth walked out and down the path, heading towards the docks, where a ferry would take him back to the mainland.

    <Have you finished dicking around with that Legendary yet?> my Gallade's voice floated through my mind. Apparently, he wasn't happy that I'd met up with Kyogre - what a surprise.

    Yeah, I'm on my way home, I sent back. I stretched my arms up into the air and took one last look at the setting sun before walking into the Outpost to log the day's adventures.
