    Ranger John Shay

    "John, you've got another run."

I quickly clicked the broadcast button on my radio. "Where, Jenny?"

The eye-catching receptionist back at the Registration Office responded quickly as well. "You're going to be going to Meteor Valley. You'll be taking a Trainer named Akinai. As usual, I'm streaming the Trainer's information to your PokeDex. It should finish download very quickly. I'll see you later."

I muttered a quick goodbye, pulling out my PokeDex. Just as Jenny had said, the stream had just completed. I opened up the document. It seemed my Trainer would be bringing in a team of four Pokemon to the Valley. This would be an interesting run.

"Alright, Dragonite, to Meteor Valley!" I yelled. My Dragonite grunted in acknowledgement, and quickly did a U-turn in the air. We were high above the National Park - high enough that there were a few clouds beneath us. Dragonite pulled into a sudden dive, and I whooped loudly as Dragonite rushed towards an area of the National Park enclosed in fog: the Meteor Valley.

We touched down at the Ranger Outpost at the base of the valley very quickly. I sat back and awaited my Trainer. She should be here soon.

OOC: No need to give me a mention, I tend to lurk the forum a lot :p want me to toss you one whenever I post though?

“Well, here we are again,” Akinai remarked. The Ranger Outpost lay a mere few hundred feet away from them and, beyond that, Meteor Valley. Even though it had been almost a year since that had last seen this place, she remembered that day as if it was yesterday. “I wonder if it has changed any?”

Beside her, a large green Pokemon simply gave a shrug in response, the motion seeming strange on the draconic creature. Jade remembered the Valley as well, though her memories were not quite as fond as her Trainer. The last thing the Flygon had done here was fight a very sinister Spiritomb, and the Ghost-type had been a member of their team since. For her, that day was simply the start of a very annoying rivalry.

Akinai, who had a very good assumption of what was bothering Jade, gave her starter an encouraging pat on the back. “That day wasn't too bad! Remember, you met Lia that day as well. Besides, Gaard has been wanting to revisit his home for a while now. Don't you think we owe him that much?”

Jade relaxed, conceding the point to her Trainer. While the Kirlia they had met that day had come off as somewhat childlike, the two had bonded rather quickly. As for Gaard... while he was somewhat leery of the Aggron on their team (and understandably so, since the two had fought fiercely before he was captured), the Absol had grown into quite a valued member.

“We will do just fine today, you'll see,” Akinai said, walking forward. “After all, we're not going into this blind this time.”

As the two approached the outpost, Akinai spotted two figures waiting on front of the building. One appeared to be a young man and was looking around as if he was expecting someone to arrive at any minute. Judging by his clothing and gear, the man was a Ranger. The second one was a little more surprising; a Dragonite patiently waited beside the human.

“Guess you're our Ranger for today,” Akinai walked forward, holding out her hand. “I'm Akinai, and the Green Wonder here is Jade,” she said, motioning her head towards the Flygon.

Jade slowly walked forward, stopping in front of the Dragonite. The Flyon's tail twitched as she realized that the fellow Dragon-type was taller than her by almost an entire foot, but said nothing.

"Guess you're our Ranger for today." A voice emanated from behind me, and I turned to face my Trainer Akinai.

Akinai walked forward, holding out her hand. "I'm Akinai, and the Green Wonder here is Jade."

I shook her hand, and introduced myself. "Nice to meet you. The name's John, John Shay, and this is my Dragonite." My Dragonite walked to Jade, and mewed a hello. "Well, let's get going."

I led Akinai down a path. It was very foggy, and vision was limited. I could only see a few feet in front of me. Beside the path, dead trees and rocks littered the ground. The Meteor Valley was a very desolate place.

    "Xatu."

I stopped. I had heard something... But where was it?

    "Xatu."

I turned to my right. There it was - a Xatu. It was standing on the side of the road, under the branches of a dead tree. It was almost eerie how the Pokemon did not move at all.

"Are you interested in battling this Xatu?" I asked my Trainer.

Akinai examined the Xatu, slightly unnerved that the Psychic-type appeared to be doing the exact same thing back. It could have easily passed for a statue considering how still it was, and didn't even seem to blink. The only sign that it was a living thing was how the Xatu's eyes moved about, appearing to gaze through everything.

"Are you interested in battling this Xatu?" John asked Akinai.

Akinai broke her eye contact with the creature, mulling it over. Xatu knew a decent set of moves, and were not that common. Plus, it was an evolved form, meaning it needed less training. Something about the way the creature just stood there and stared just seemed to creep her out, however. Coming to a decision, she shook her head in response.

“I'd rather see what's ahead first. We just entered, and I'm curious to see out how this place has changed.” Shortly after she had left the Valley last time, there had been a news story about plethora of new wildlife discovered in the Park. Needless to say, she was curious to see what lay in store. As an afterthought, she pulled out a plush doll that she had stored in her bag; though it seemed unorthodox, it appeared as if wild Pokemon were obsessed with these Pokedolls. “If it decides to follow I'll use this,” Akinai said, holding up the Doll.

Akinai looked at the Xatu. Shaking her head, she said, "I'd rather see what's ahead first. We just entered, and I'm curious to see out how this place has changed." Pulling out a Pokedoll from her bag, Akinai said, "If it decides to follow, I'll use this."

I nodded, and watched the Xatu as I began walking past. Its head turned slowly, its gaze following us in an spooky manner. However, the Pokemon made no move to follow. No emotion was shown on its stoic face, and it merely watched as we left it behind in the fog.

"That was creepy," I remarked. The Meteor Valley was a mysterious place, full of odd Pokemon like Xatu. However, at least Akinai didn't need to use her Pokedoll.

We continued walking along the path. I knew that soon enough, the path would lead us out of this dead forest. However, we weren't quite at that point yet.

"Dragonite!" my Pokemon bellowed, pointing at something in the distance. I looked at where it was pointing, and saw something yellow instantly disappear.

"What was that?" I wondered. However, there was nothing to do except continue walking.

About a minute later, I saw the yellow thing again. We walked past a dead tree, and I saw it sitting just behind it. However, before I could focus on it, it disappeared again in a burst of purple light.

"What the?" I wondered. This was really odd... What was going on?

"Dragonite!" Dragonite roared again, tackling a tree to my right. I was wondering what it had done, but an Abra crawled out from behind the tree. Clearly, it was annoyed. I realized this Abra was what I had been seeing. It had probably been Teleporting away from us to avoid confrontation. However, Dragonite had sensed it quickly and revealed it for us.

"Akinai, interested in trying to capture this Pokemon?" I asked my Trainer.

As they continued on, John's Dragonite appeared to have discovered something; it had let out a cry, and was pointing at something in the distance. As they approached, however, nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.

"What was that?" John wondered aloud. Apparently Akinai wasn't the only one who wondered what was going on. Still, they kept on walking. Not much later, there was a flash of yellow as something appeared in the distance, then dematerialized as the group got closer.

“Haven't even been here long, and already this is going into uncanny valley,” Akinai muttered to herself. Knowing her luck, a Ghost was the culprit behind this latest prank. While catching Magi had helped remove some of her dislike of the spirits, she was still somewhat uneasy around them.

Suddenly, Dragonite gave a roar and tackled a nearby tree, possibly to scare out whatever was hiding nearby. A small Pokemon appeared and slunk forward, clearly not happy with being discovered. It's face was pointed and appeared foxlike, and the creature's eyes seemed to be constantly closed; a stark contrast to the Xatu they had just passed. While the Pokemon had a small tail, the rest of it's body was almost humanlike.

Akinai couldn't help but laugh a little as she realized that the Psychic-type was the reason behind Dragonite acting oddly. She knew that Abra tended to teleport away at the first sign on danger, but it appeared as if this one was merely playing with them.

"Akinai, interested in trying to capture this Pokemon?" my Ranger asked.

Akinai nodded in confirmation. “I've always wanted to try raising an Abra, so this is perfect.” She gave a grin and added, “Plus, this one seems to have a sense of humor. How many can you say have that?”

Jade, hearing her Trainer, stepped forward and eyed her opponent with a dismissive gaze. The Abra didn't seem that powerful in the least; it's form was scrawny and not muscular at all, and appeared to be half asleep. What's more, it seemed rather disinterested in battling. Jade gave a small sigh and looked over at Akinai, waiting for orders.

Let's see... Akinai was aware that most wild Abra were only able to Teleport until reaching Kadabra form, but this was the Park. Pokemon here tended to know an extremely varied amount of moves; a fact that she had learned the hard way when an Absol had blew an icy gale of wind at Jade. By following that example, it was safe to assume that this Abra would know well more than one move. Still, it was always better to play it safe then to just run in and make a fatal mistake.

“Jade, use Sand Tomb to make sure that Abra can't get away,” Akinai commanded. “When that is set up, go with a Supersonic.” With any luck, the Pokemon would be trapped and unable to react quickly.

Jade lifted off the ground about a foot and began to beat her wings back and forth, gathering up sand and gathering the motes into a small dust devil thanks to the wind caused by the Flygon's wings. Once the tornado was of a decent enough size, she pushed the tornado forward with a wingbeat. As the Sand Tomb made it's way to the Abra, Jade whipped her head back and spat out several sound waves from her mouth, aiming them at the Psychic Pokemon.

    BP-1: Flygon VS Abra

    Ranger John Shay

    OOC: Gender?

Akinai grinned. "I've always wanted to try raising an Abra, so this is perfect. Plus, this one seems to have a sense of humor. How many can you say have that?"

I simply nodded, and stepped out of the way. Akinai motioned for Jade to step forward.

"Jade, use Sand Tomb to make sure that Abra can't get away," Akinai instructed. "When that is set up, go with a Supersonic."

This was an intelligent way to start off the battle. By using Sand Tomb, Akinai prevented Abra from Teleporting away. Supersonic would then confuse Abra, making things even tougher for the Pokemon. With any luck, Akinai would set herself up for a quick and easy battle.

Jade launched into action immediately. She leaped into the air, and began flapping her leathery wings at the Abra. A tornado of sand began to form around Abra. It solidified into a coffin-like structure, leaving only Abra's head exposed.

"Abra!" Abra cried in disdain. It struggled in the Sand Tomb, but was clearly unable to move. I expected no less - Sand Tomb was a move that prevented the trapped Pokemon from escaping, even if it used moves such as Teleport.

Next, Jade used Supersonic. She screamed loudly in a terrible voice, and energy in the form of sound waves enveloped Abra. The Psychic-type shook its head in pain, but couldn't do anything else due to the Sand Tomb. I could only imagine the torment the Pokemon was experiencing - it was trapped and unable to move, not even able to hold its head as Supersonic affected it.

Jade closed her mouth, ending the move. Abra abruptly hung its head, clearly overwhelmed. I watched Abra closely. There was no way it was fainted. Sand Tomb could only have done minimal damage, being the weak attack it was, and as overwhelming as Supersonic was, it shouldn't have done any direct damage to Abra. The confusion hadn't even lasted long enough to result in any confusion damage yet. That meant it was only regaining its senses right now. However, something was wrong. Abra wasn't moving at all. What was going on?

Suddenly, Jade crumpled, free-falling to the ground. I fleetingly spotted a look of mixed surprise and pain on the Flygon's face. But what had possibly happened?

"Dragonite!" my Pokemon gasped quietly, only barely audible. And then, I remembered. Back when I had challenged the Psychic-type Saffron Gym in Kanto, something similar had happened to my Dragonite. It was because of an attack... I racked my brain, trying to remember what the attack was named.

I remembered! "Akinai, that Abra just used Psyshock on your Flygon!"

If memory served me correctly, Psyshock was a move that inflicted damage mentally. No physical movement was required - it was simply an attack that attacked the target Pokemon's mind directly. In that sense, it was the perfect move for Abra, even better than more powerful Psychic-type moves such as Psychic.

Jade quickly returned to her feet. I wasn't surprised. Though the Psyshock may have initially appeared to do a lot of damage, I suspected that was only because Jade had been flying when it happened, resulting in a dramatic fall. Abra couldn't have shaken off such an overwhelming Supersonic so quickly, and I'm sure that that must have played into a slightly weaker Psyshock.

Still, Abra had established that it was fully capable of fighting even without being able to move, and judging from the look on Jade's face, she understood that. Fortunately, Abra was confused, and that had to factor into Akinai's game plan moving forward.

    OOC: Male, please.

Akinai grinned triumphantly as she saw that both of Jade's attacks landed perfectly. The Abra was securely encased by the Sand Tomb and, judging from the way the Psychic-type had winced when the sound waves had reached it, there was a pretty good chance that it was confused as well. “Nice one, Jade! Keep it up,” she called out to the Flygon. If all of their battles were this simple, they would be out in no time!

Jade gave a small wing flap in Akinai's direction, as if to say, it was nothing. She shot a smug look over at the Abra, as if daring the Pokemon to attempt breaking free. Jade had fought far tougher opponents in the past, what was a single, inexperienced Abra to her?

The Abra gave no response, it's eyes still closed. If Akinai didn't know any better, she would guess that the Pokemon had simply gone back to sleep. There was no way that was possible though; even a Snorlax would have trouble getting some shuteye after dealing with a Supersonic scream so soon. Suddenly, as if the Abra had read her mind, Jade gave a startled shriek and fell flat to the ground, as if some unseen object had struck her.

“What in the world...” Akinai wondered out loud. What had struck Jade? As fas as she could tell, no projectile had been launched forward. Plus, judging by the way the Flygon had simply collapsed, she doubted that the wild Pokemon had retaliated with Psychic as well; Jade probably would have been sent flying a few feet away if so.

"Akinai, that Abra just used Psyshock on your Flygon!" her Ranger called out. Judging from the realization in his tone, John must have been wondering what the attack was as well until now.

Akinai nodded in response. That seemed like what had happened, all right. While Psyshock was not that powerful compared to most moves, it was good at doing what was intended: to shock the opponent. Basically a single psionic wave strikes a key part of the opposing enemies brain, then gives it a small jolt. This knocks the opponent off-balance, causing more physical damage then most Psychic-type attacks. Granted, this was all information that her Gardevoir had tried explaining once day- Akinai had yet to see it in action until now.

Jade got back on her feet rather quickly, this time keeping a close eye on the Abra. Just when she thought she had this Pokemon cornered, it had to humiliate her by causing her to fall flat on her face. The Flygon's tail began to twitch slightly, a subtle trait that showed that she was growing annoyed.

Akinai hid her mouth a moment, fighting back the urge to say something to her starter. Jade had been far too confident in her abilities, and had paid the price for it. Still, it proved that their opponent was not as helpless that they had first thought. She could send out Gaard instead, that would negate most if not all Psychic attacks. Having a Dark-type on the field would help whittle down the wild Pokemon's health faster as well, allowing a quick capture. Unfortunately, recalling the Flygon would also cause the Sand Tomb to dissipate, allowing the Abra an opening to escape. For now, Jade would have to stay in.

“Give that Abra no openings! Jade, strike it with a Faint Attack, then get away with a SonicBoom,” Akinai commanded the Flygon. Hopefully the waves caused by the second attack would disorient the Psychic Pokemon further.

Jade lifted off with a single beat of her wings and shot upwards, aiming to land behind the Abra. From within the Pokemon's blind spot, one of her claws began to glow with a dark aura and she struck forward. As she moved forward, her wings began to gather energy, ready to push back with a single massive soundwave.

    BP-2: Flygon VS Abra

    Ranger John Shay

Akinai seemed to think for a moment before ordering her next move. "Give that Abra no openings! Jade, strike it with a Faint Attack, then get away with a SonicBoom."

This seemed like a wise strategy to me. Abra had made a statement when he landed a solid hit on Jade even after suffering a hellish Sand Tomb and Supersonic combination. Coming right back with a two-attack combination was a good way to answer, I thought.

Jade screeched loudly, and swooped in towards Abra viciously. The Flygon feinted right, then did a barrel roll and slammed into Abra's side fly-by style. As she returned to Akinai, she swung her tail in a crescent pattern at Abra. A shock wave rushed towards the immobile Abra, and the move slammed into him as well.

"Abra!" he cried. However, trapped in the Sand Tomb, he could not move. It impressed me how calm the Pokemon was despite being trapped. However, this couldn't last forever - Abra would have to break free eventually. I watched as a look of concentration grew on the Pokemon's face. Was it trying to do something?

After a few moments, Abra's head suddenly snapped back and his face contorted in pain. I quickly realized what had happened - in his confused state, the Pokemon had smacked himself! This was the confusion from earlier working its magic. Akinai had an opportunity here. What would she do with it?

As Jade glided back to her starting position, Akinai watched the Abra carefully, looking for any sign of movement or a possible ranged attack. It had clearly felt the Flygon's prior attacks, and was obviously not happy with it's current predicament despite it keeping a perfectly calm face; after all, Abra were used to being able to go wherever they please, and the Sand Tomb prevented it from doing so.

As the SonicBoom wave dissipated, the Psychic Pokemon began to grow still once more and began to furrow it's brow in deep concentration. Before it could finish the move, however, it's head suddenly snapped back, as if struck with an unseen attack. It's expression grew quizzical, as if the wild Pokemon was absolutely confused on what had struck it.

“What,” Akinai stated flatly, before finally letting out a laugh. You have got to be kidding me! “Don't tell me that it accidentally struck itself.” If this kept up, this fight would be easier then fishing Magikarp out of a barrel.

Jade looked at her Trainer, tossing a baffled look over at Abra, then stared at Akinai once more, wondering what to do. At this rate, her opponent would be battling itself rather then the Flygon. She lazily hovered, her wings giving off a slight buzz as they flapped idly.

Akinai gave the Abra a cursory look, trying to decide on the best possible plan to proceed forward. The Pokemon appeared to have taken a decent amount of damage, but still looked rather healthy. If the Sand Tomb broke early, it was still possible for the Abra to escape; she would need a way to hinder it's movement more.

“Let's see if luck is still on our side. Try to land a DragonBreath, then distract it with a Sand-Attack,” Akinai called out to Jade. Despite the fact that Abra tended to keep their eyes closed, there was still a chance that the sand could still harass it somewhat.

Jade flew closer to the Abra, taking a deep breath as she did so. As she got into range. The Flygon blew out a thin stream of fire, the flames a shimmering violet. As the flames reached closer to the Abra, Jade lowered her tail to the ground, gathering up some excess grit and sand. She swung the sand forward, aiming at the wild Pokemon's face.

"What," Akinai said, clearly dumbfounded. Then, she laughed. "Don't tell me that it accidentally struck itself."

I smiled as well. Akinai was certainly off to an easy start. Luck was smiling on her.

"Let's see if luck is still on our side. Try to land a DragonBreath, then distract it with a Sand-Attack," Akinai instructed.

Jade nodded, and immediately blew blue flames on Abra. The Pokemon struggled as he was enveloped by the raging flames. Jade continued, slapping sand at Abra with her tail.

Suddenly, Abra smashed his way out of the Sand Tomb. The sand flew in all directions, knocking away the flames and the incoming Sand-Attack. There was renewed poise in his stance, and it seemed to me that Abra had snapped out of confusion as well. Akinai had had it easy earlier, but it seemed that was over now. Abra was no longer contained within the Sand Tomb, nor was it confused. Abra was much weaker now than it had been before Jade had trapped him with the Sand Tomb, but I suspected this Pokemon was going to give his all and fight back.

Abra immediately went on the offensive, clearly interested in making up for lost time. He formed a black ball of energy in his hands, and fired it at Jade. The Shadow Ball slammed into her side, and the Pokemon dropped a bit from the hit.

    "Flygon!" Jade cried.

Abra continued his onslaught. Ice grew around his fist, and Abra bent his feet, clearly preparing to jump. Abra was planning to use Ice Punch. While Abra's Attack stat was horrible, an Ice-type move would do a lot of damage to Flygon if it connected. I knew Akinai had to do something.

Things seemed to be going quite well for Jade to say the least. While the sand barrage appeared to be doing little good, the flames from her DragonBreath had struck dead-on, causing the Abra to squirm about. While the Pokemon had not been struck by paralysis, being seared by the flames was bound to at least damage it somewhat.

Without warning, the sand encasing the Abra exploded, flying in all directions. The fragments managed to effectively block the remaining flames along with the sand Jade was still lobbing forward. Whether it had been dumb luck or Abra manipulating the fragments with telekinesis, Akinai was uncertain. Only one thing was sure for now: Abra was free and, judging from the determined look on the Pokemon's face, it would be looking for payback. It began to form a sphere of concentrated dark energy in it's hand and shot it forward, aiming directly at Jade.

Jade, having just finished her combo, was caught completely flatfooted by the sudden attack. It struck her hard, and the Flygon staggered a moment, losing altitude. She gave a startled cry, and tried to regain her position in the air.

“So it does have some fight to it,” Akinai muttered, keeping an eye on the Abra. Jade would be fine for now, the Flygon had suffered far worse injuries before and had still been able to fight. For now, she needed to see what the Abra's next move would be. Would it retreat now that it could move once more, or would it exact revenge for being humiliated? It appeared to no longer be confused as well; judging from it's confident posture, it was definitely thinking clearly now.

Abra, seeing his opponent falter, readied another attack. It ran forward, surprisingly fast for a creature that slept most of the day, and began to ball up one of his fists. An icy rime began to form around the hand; a perfect telltale sign of what element the next move would be.

Akinai reacted quickly, pulling off two Pokeballs from her belt. Even if Abra were terrible at physical attacks, an Ice attack could seriously hurt Jade. She aimed the first sphere directly at Jade, and held on to the second one for now. “Jade, get out of there,” she commanded, and the Flygon was called back to her Ball in a ruby-red light. She would deal with her starter's complaining about being recalled at another time.

As soon as the Flygon's form had dematerialized, Akinai lightly tossed the second Pokeball in an underhanded toss. “Gaard, you're up! Hinder that Abra's movement with a Thunder Wave, then go with a Taunt so it won't escape!” She had been hoping on using the Absol later, letting him look around his old home a while first before battling, but it couldn't be helped; Gaard had a move that she needed right this moment.

In a flash of white light, Gaard materialized almost directly below where Jade had been flying. He took a quick glimpse around, and locked his gaze on the approaching Abra. The Absol's white fur appeared to puff out a moment as he gathered up enough static for his next move, then shot waves of electricity at his opponent once the move was ready. As the waves shot forth, Gaard began to shout out at the Abra, the words indistinguishable but clearly insulting judging by the derisive tone they were uttered with.

"Jade, get out of there," Akinai said automatically. She held up two Pokeballs, and one of them sucked in her Flygon. The other one opened up, and a white-and-grey Pokemon leaped out.

    "Absol," the Pokemon said coolly.

"Gaard, you're up! Hinder that Abra's movement with a Thunder Wave, then go with a Taunt so it won't escape!" Akinai commanded.

Gaard nodded. He launched a wave of electricity at Abra, and the Pokemon was ensnared within the blast. The Pokemon was instantly paralyzed. Gaard continued, and began growling at Abra. This was the move Taunt - basically one Pokemon showing off to another and ticking it off. In its blind rage, that Pokemon would be lured into only using aggressive attacking moves rather than less damaging moves for a while. That was certainly a good idea here, as it prevented Abra from Teleporting away. Gaard had nothing to fear from a Pokemon he held many advantages over in Abra.

Abra, despite his paralysis, fell for the Taunt and madly ran towards Gaard. His Ice Punch was still intact, and Abra swung his fist at the Absol, knocking him away a few feet. While Abra's Attack stat was really quite pathetic, anger was a strong motivator and I wouldn't be surprised if Abra had gotten an extra kick out of his rage.

The element on Abra's fist changed. The ice around it disappeared, and was replaced by burning flames. Abra was planning to use Fire Punch.

"Abra," the Pokemon growled. He took a step towards Gaard, then suddenly locked up. The fire on his fist immediately faded away. The Pokemon was fully paralyzed. Akinai and Gaard had caught a break here - how would they take advantage of it?

Just as planned, Akinai thought grimly as the electrical waves from Gaard's attack struck the Abra full-on, causing the Pokemon's limbs to stiffen. With his opponent unable to act quickly, Gaard could easily dance around and strike at the best moment possible. She watched on, seeing if the paralysis was strong enough to completely disarm the Pokemon.

Instead of stopping in it's tracks, however, the Abra pressed on, possibly spurred on by the Taunt. The Psychic-type swung forward, managing to strike the Absol with a freezing punch. Gaard was knocked back a bit and shuddered a moment at the contact, but otherwise appeared to be fine. Abra let out a snarl, quite disturbing to hear from such a normally calm Pokemon, and held up it's fist once more, this time burning with a brilliant crimson flame. It stepped forward, then began to falter as if frozen in place. The flame dissipated as quickly as it had appeared, leaving the Abra clearly frustrated.

“Excellent job, Gaard,” Akinai called out to the Absol, who had noticed the canceled attack. Maybe this sudden paralysis would dishearten the wild Pokemon.

Gaard gave a single swish of his tail in acknowledgment, still watching the Abra with a baleful glare. Psychic Pokemon, due to using special attacks over more physical methods, were still quite formidable when immobilized. Until either fainted or captured, this battle was far from over.

“Suppose it would be better safe then sorry,” Akinai muttered, seeing that Gaard still appeared to be rather uncertain. “Very well, then! Go with a Double Team, then strike quickly with Night Slash.” This would ensure that attacks would be less likely to hit the Absol, and give him more confidence in pressing forward.

Gaard nodded, and began to swiftly run around the Abra in a circle. Soon there appeared to be multiple forms of the Absol moving about, going swift enough to leave afterimages in his wake. The images appeared to press in closer before all leaped forward at once, the scythe on their head glowing a sinister dark shade.

    BP-5: Absol VS Abra

    Ranger John Shay

"Excellent job, Gaard," Akinai said. Gaard nodded in acknowledgement. Clearly, both Trainer and Pokemon alike were satisfied to see that the paralysis was working.

Akinai bit her lip and mulled things over for a bit. She muttered, "Suppose it would be better safe then sorry. Very well, then! Go with a Double Team, then strike quickly with Night Slash."

Gaard nodded. Dopplegangers rippled out of her body, and they all ran towards Abra. The horn on their head began shimmering black, and all three Pokemon crisscrossed into each other's paths as they dashed towards Abra.

"Absol!" they cried, and the three Pokemon tackled the Abra. The two fakes should have passed right through, but it was impossible to tell which was ones were the fakes as the real one connected with Abra at the same time the fakes seemed to, making it appear as though the fakes had tackled Abra as well.

Abra was knocked back by the move. His arms were gingerly pressed against his side. The Pokemon was clearly getting close to his limit.

"Abra!" the Pokemon called angrily. I remembered the Taunt was still in effect. However, with Absol's Double Team in play, Abra should have a much more difficult time discerning which Pokemon to target.

Abra seemed to realize this as well, and sniffed in annoyance. He opened his mouth, and started singing in a painful, screeching voice. I covered my ears with my hands - this sound was horrible. I saw Dragonite do the same beside me.

Absol's copies vanished instantly. This move must be Round - a sound-based attacking move. Absol's copies would take the damaging effects of the move as well as the original, as Round hit multiple targets due to its sound-based nature. It was a weak move, but an intelligent one on behalf of Abra as it made things much easier for it.

However, Abra was getting very weak. I suspected this battle was close to being over. How much longer could it last?

“Nicely done,” Akinai remarked. Even she was unable to tell which Absol was the real one as Gaard created the afterimages, swooping in for a quick strike on the Abra. The wild Pokemon was knocked back by the blow, and had definitely felt the attack.

The Abra looked over at the clones, holding his side and still seeing red thanks to Gaard's earlier Taunt. It could try to discern which Absol was real one by using telepathy, but Dark-types had an impressive resistance to such techniques, even negating most entirely. He could also try to take them down one at a time, but that would leave him open for yet more attacks. The only option left was to try hitting them all at once. Sniffing in disdain, the Pokemon did something unexpected to both the Absol and his Trainer; he began to sing.

At first the tune seemed somewhat harmonic, then it twisted into a loud, screeching cacophony. The sound seemed to pierce the air with it's noise, and Akinai covered her ears to attempt dulling the attack. She took a look over, and noticed that her Ranger and Dragonite were doing the same thing.

Gaard, however, had no way to block the sound. He let out a howl of pain, and the images began to fade away, the attack hitting them as well. The Absol stood hunched over and shot Akinai a look, asking for what to do next.

We need to find a way to kill that sound, Akinai thought, looking over at the Abra. Another Night Slash would do the trick, but the damage was highly likely to knock out the Pokemon as well. A long-ranged attack would be perfect as well, but Gaard currently did not know any... at least, none that could help in this situation. That left only one option: attack quickly, and hope that they were able to capture it before the Abra got it's bearings once more.

“Kill that noise with a Pursuit!” Akinai commanded, “Strike him down, then get ready to move.” She set her pack down, searching for a Superball to use once Gaard hit the Abra. Her hands closed upon the sphere, and Akinai watched closely, looking for the perfect time to throw.

Gaard bounded forward as quickly as possible, still wincing from the ongoing Round noise. His front claws began to glow the same dark aura as earlier and, once he was in range of the Abra, swiped towards the Pokemon.

Once the action was done, Akinai stepped forward, taking careful aim. She targeted the Abra ahead, and threw the Superball forward.

"Kill that noise with a Pursuit!" Akinai barked instantly, knowing she had to stop Abra's Round. Gaard obliged. His claws gleamed black, and despite Abra's loud screaming, managed to get within striking distance. The Pokemon vengefully took a swipe, and Abra stopped singing immediately.

    "Abra!" he cried, falling backwards.

Akinai wasted no time and took a step forward. I noticed a Super Ball in her hands - she was planning to capture Abra. She tossed the Super Ball at Abra, and the Pokemon was sucked into the capsule.

The Super Ball rolled around on the ground. I held my breath, watching it anxiously.

Ding! The Super Ball stopped shaking. Abra was captured!

I smiled at Akinai, and tossed Abra's Super Ball into my bag. "Great job, Akinai! I'll be keeping Abra for now. At the end of your run, I'll give you the three Pokemon you choose to take out with you as well as a note that you need to give to the people at the Registration Office to take out those Pokemon. Well, shall we continue?"

As the Abra was sucked into the Superball, Akinai watched the sphere carefully. Perhaps if they acted quickly, Gaard would be able to strike the Pokemon once more before trying another capture. Thankfully, this was unneeded; the Ball shook feebly a couple times, then let off a ping, confirming the capture.

"Great job, Akinai! I'll be keeping Abra for now.” John said, scooping up the Ball. “At the end of your run, I'll give you the three Pokemon you choose to take out with you as well as a note that you need to give to the people at the Registration Office to take out those Pokemon. Akinai nodded in return, remembering how the process went from her last run here. Granted, the last time had been rather hectic, since she had arrived back at the docks right as the ferry was getting ready to leave. This time around, things should go much smoother. “Let's go on. I'm a little surprised that an Abra could put up such a fight, so it will be interesting to see how the others fare as well!” She kept Gaard out for now, letting the Absol walk around in his old home.

"Let's go on," Akinai said. "I'm a little surprised that an Abra could put up such a fight, so it will be interesting to see how the others fare as well!"

I nodded, and we continued walking down the path. I noticed Akinai left Gaard out of his Pokemon. The Absol was walking around with an air of comfort. I thought that was odd - not even my Dragonite was able to find an atmosphere like this truly comfortable. I recalled that Absol could be found in Meteor Valley, and put two and two together. While I couldn't be 100% sure, I strongly suspected Gaard was originally from the Meteor Valley. It would seem logical, as according to Akinai's records, she had visited the Meteor Valley before.

We continued walking down the path, eyes peeled for our next Pokemon encounter. It appeared relatively quickly in the form of a dark hound, leaning against a dead tree by the side of the path. We stopped to look at it. It wasn't looking back, instead it was staring straight into the distance with a blank look on its face. This Pokemon was a Poochyena.

Poochyena's eyes shifted to look at us. It had noticed us.

"Interested in battling this Pokemon, Akinai?" I asked my Trainer.
