Akinai looked over at the Pokemon, trying her best to conceal a grin. While this one seemed less aggressive than the last Poochyena, she had encountered one during her last run here as well. While she was a fan of the evolution line, sadly she already had a Mightyena on her team. “Let's leave it be,” Akinai said to her Ranger, “wonder what's wrong with it though... they're usually way more energetic.”

Gaard, just as curious as Akinai, walked up to the Poochyena, trying to see what the problem was. Gaard was a close friend to Lunaris, the Mightyena on their team, so was interested to see if this Pokemon was anything like his teammate.

“Leave it be, Gaard,” Akinai muttered, pulling out a Pokedoll from her bag just in case the Poochyena decided to attack. While the Dark-type appeared to be somewhat out of it, the creature was still very much wild.

"Let's leave it be," Akinai said, "Wonder what's wrong with it though... they're usually way more energetic."

I shrugged. Poochyena as a population were typically energetic Pokemon, but more solemn ones had to exist within the species. That's the only logical reasoning to me, anyways - Poochyena didn't look that troubled to me, it only seemed lonely.

I tried walking past Poochyena, skirting to the side of the road to show the Pokemon we meant no harm. Akinai and Gaard followed me closely.

"Leave it be, Gaard," warned Akinai when the Absol made to get closer to the Poochyena.

Poochyena showed no hostility towards us, but it kept watchful eyes on us as we left it behind. The Pokemon did not attempt to chase us.

"Well then, it doesn't seem as though you'll have to use that," I said, nodding at the Pokedoll Akinai had taken out.

We continued walking along the path. I checked my map. The path ended just up ahead, and it would lead us to a more open area of the valley. Looking up, I found that to be true. I could see the path opening up ahead, with the dead trees ending as well. We made our way to the open area. The fog here was much thicker, but I could see that it was a very rocky area. Rocks, ranging from pebbles to the size of my fist, were strewn messily on the ground I stood upon. This was why this valley was called Meteor Valley - it actually looked as though a meteor had blown into it. There were myths that a meteor actually had blown into this place, resulting in all this debris, but I wasn't sure if I put too much stock into superstition like that.

I led Akinai forward, careful to avoid tripping on any rocks in the fog.

"Dragonite," my Pokemon murmured, looking up.

"What is it? Do you sense something?" I asked my Pokemon. Dragonite nodded.

"Natu!" A small green Pokemon pulled out a sharp dive, and landed right in front of us. This Pokemon must have had some impressive self-confidence to appear in front of us like that. It was clearly looking for a battle.

"Are you interested in battling this Pokemon, Akinai?" I asked Akinai.

As the path lead to a more open area of the Valley, Akinai scanned her surroundings. She could hardly see every detail thanks to all the fog lying about, but the area appeared just as rocky as the preceding areas. She followed John along, walking slowly and carefully- the last time she had tripped on a rock here, it had turned up to be a sleeping Spiritomb, and had no desire to repeat the experience.

As they walked along her Ranger's Dragonite appeared to stop, then looked upwards. Gaard stopped a moment as well, as if sensing something. He followed the Dragonite's gaze, but appeared to relax immediately. Whatever was up there, he was not too worried about it.

"What is it? Do you sense something?" John asked his Pokemon, receiving a nod in response.

Suddenly, a small green creature dove out of the fog, landing in front of a group. It let out a loud chirp, and focused on the two Pokemon.

"Are you interested in battling this Pokemon, Akinai?" John asked Akinai.

Akinai shook her head, now knowing why Gaard had relaxed. If this Pokemon was all that was waiting for them in the fog, they had little to worry about. “No thanks. We did pass a Xatu, after all. Let's try to find an easy way past it.” Akinai made ready to grab one of her Pokedolls, then hesitated. There were more powerful creatures ahead, and she had a limited amount of Dolls. Her Ranger possibly had more, but that would require paying for them in advance. If they ran out, Akinai would have to be very, very selective on what she would have to fight and which she would throw a Doll at.

“Gaard, be ready with a Night Slash if that Natu appears to follow us or tries to block our passage”, Akinai murmured to her Absol. She hated doing this, but she also couldn't afford just throwing Pokedolls at every wild Pokemon that passed by.

Gaard gave a small nod of acknowledgment and began to walk slower, keeping his eyes on the Natu. The scythe on his head began to take on an ebony-black sheen, but the Absol held his ground for now.

Akinai shook her head. It was hardly surprising - she had shown a lack of interest in the Xatu earlier as well.

"No thanks. We did pass a Xatu, after all," Akinai said, echoing my thoughts. "Let's try to find an easy way past it."

Akinai made to grab a Pokedoll from her bag just in case, but held back. She seemed to be debating whether Natu was worth a Pokedoll or not. Instead, she said, "Gaard, be ready with a Night Slash if that Natu appears to follow us or tries to block our passage."

The Absol nodded solemnly, and his horn started glowing with black energy.

We walked past the Natu. The Pokemon, realizing we had turned down its challenge, flew away quickly, no longer interested in us. Gaard's Night Slash faded away, no longer needed. We continued hiking across the rocky area.

Suddenly, the rocks in front of me exploded, scattering everywhere.

"What was that?" I half-yelled, stepping backwards carefully. A Drowzee stepped out of the fog. The Pokemon had an aggressive look on its face - it was almost definitely the cause of the exploding rocks.

Regaining my composure, I gave the Drowzee the evil eye as I asked, "Do you want to battle this Drowzee?"

Akinai gave a small sigh of relief as they managed to pass by the Natu with no confrontation. As the small Pokemon flew away, she watched Gaard's attack slowly fade as well. “Well, glad that's over,” Akinai said, and followed her Ranger forward.

As if to prove her wrong, something ahead appeared to explode, shooting rocks forward and everywhere else. Akinai stepped back while covering her face, hoping that none of the debris would strike them. Gaard stepped back as well, his fur bristling as he growled at whatever lay ahead.

"What was that?" John called out, taking a step back as well. As if to answer his question, a yellow, tapir-like creature stepped forward out of the wreckage. Judging from the challenging expression it was wearing, it was definitely looking for a fight.

"Do you want to battle this Drowzee?" John asked Akinai, giving the Drowzee a glare.

Akinai paled as she observed the Drowzee. “...Let's just try to get away from it.” She was never a huge fan of the Pokemon, due to their looks and especially their mannerisms. It was a popular fact that these creatures liked to eat the dreams of both Pokemon and human alike; the last thing she wanted was the chance of anything invading her thoughts. Akinai shook her head and readied a Doll just in case. While Drowzee were not much more powerful than a Natu, she wanted absolutely no chance to fight this Pokemon.

"...Let's just try to get away from it," Akinai muttered, clearly not a fan of the Pokemon.

I nodded, and led Akinai away from the Drowzee. I kept an eye on this Pokemon, but despite being a clearly more aggressive Pokemon, it made no move to attack us. I had to admit I was a little surprised, but I kept going regardless.

Our next encounter appeared quickly. As we walked into the fog, I noticed green, yellow, and red lights piercing through the fog.

"What are those?" I wondered aloud, walking closer. As a Ranger, it was my duty to make sure to inspect oddities in the Park to make sure nothing was going wrong.

As we walked closer to the lights, I realized the lights were approaching us. No, they were not lights - they were part of a Pokemon.

"Elgyem!" A small gray Pokemon appeared out of the fog. The lights were emitting from the Pokemon's hands. The Pokemon seemed to be in good spirits.

"Interested in battling this Pokemon?" I asked Akinai.

What in the world is that, Akinai wondered, seeing the Pokemon approach out of the fog. The creature was short, though not as short as the Natu they had seen earlier, and appeared to have three lights coming from it's hands. They blinked in a steady rhythm and, judging from the way they moved, they doubled as possibly fingers or suction cups for the Pokemon as well. This trait, along with the odd overall shape of the creature, made it a weird Pokemon indeed. There was no doubt about it- this must be one of the new species that had been discovered in the Park not long ago.

"Interested in battling this Pokemon?" John asked Akinai.

“I wonder...” Akinai trailed off, lost in thought a moment. While she couldn't tell exactly what type this Pokemon was just by looking at it, her gut instinct told her that it was another Psychic-type. While she was interested in capturing some of the more recently-found wildlife, she had just captured an Abra. For the moment, her team did not need any more Psychics. It seemed to be so carefree though, and something about it seemed to put a grin on her face. Let's see if this works.

Akinai retrieved Gaard's Pokeball, and silently recalled the Absol. Gaard appeared somewhat surprised by the action, but went back to his Ball with no complaints. She then lightly tossed another Pokeball into the air, releasing a green-and-white patterned Pokemon sporting impressive blades on his arms. The Gallade blinked once, then looked over at the wild Pokemon.

<I take it that it's time to fight?> the Gallade inquired to Akinai, asking mentally.

Not exactly, Zen, Akinai responded in kind. If it wants to fight, sure. Something tells me it just wanted to meet us. Maybe you could try talking to it? This was a long shot, Akinai knew that quite well. If it avoided a fight though, she was all up for it.

Zen appeared a little stunned by the command, then relaxed. <You're putting a lot of trust in this. Not all Pokemon are like Lia, you know that.> Still, he slowly walked towards the Pokemon.

“You don't have to remind me of that,” Akinai muttered out loud, watching the two Pokemon closely. If this didn't end well, she would have to order Zen to attack right away.

"I wonder..." Akinai trailed off. She pulled out Gaard's Pokeball, and called the Pokemon back. Instead, she threw out the Pokeball of her Gallade Zen. The Pokemon exploded into view.

The two stood still for a moment. I couldn't tell what was going on or what they were trying to do, but suddenly Zen began walking towards the Elgyem. Were they going to battle?

"You don't have to remind me of that," Akinai suddenly said. For a moment, I thought she was off her rocker, but then I put two and two together and realized why Akinai and Zen had been frozen a moment earlier. Being a Psychic-type, Zen could probably communicate with Akinai telepathically. It clicked perfectly with the details. But what were they going to do now?

Zen crouched down to Elgyem's height. He began talking to the Pokemon, establishing dialogue with it. I could see Elgyem responding to Zen. From what I could tell, the Pokemon was a naturally good-spirited one. Very quickly, Zen stood back up and walked towards Akinai. Elgyem followed closely, its eyes lit up happily.

I realized what Zen and Akinai must have been trying to accomplish. They must have been trying to befriend Elgyem, and from the looks of things, they had been successfully. Fortunately for them, Elgyem seemed to be a friendly Pokemon. I nodded at Akinai to show her I had figured out what had transpired, and then led her, Zen, and Elgyem onwards.

We had been hiking nonstop for a while now. I wasn't sure about Akinai, but my legs were getting tired, and I could certainly use a break. Odds were, my Trainer would benefit from a short rest as well.

Noticing a few rocks that looked like they wouldn't be too uncomfortable to sit on, I pointed at them to show Akinai and led our party over to the rocks. I took a drink from my water canteen, gracious for a break.

Suddenly, I heard a loud crowing. A black bird flew at us from out of the fog, and perched itself upon the highest rock around. With the fog around it, it made for a very eerie sight. However, there was no mistaking the puffed-up chest, the prominent crest of feathers, or the fedora hat-shaped head - this Pokemon was Honchkrow.

"Are you interested in battling this Honchkrow?" I asked Akinai.

After what seemed like an eternity, Zen walked back to Akinai. Closely following behind him was the wild Pokemon, clearly happy that it had found a new friend. <Looks like you were right, this little guy was just curious to see us,> he paused a moment as the small Pokemon made a sound as if correcting the Gallade, <correction, girl. She says they call themselves Elgyem.>

Fitting, a strange name for a strange Pokemon, Akinai responded. She noticed her Ranger was starting to stare now, and the realization dawned on her that she had never told John what exactly she had been planning to do. Oops. “I was having Zen introduce himself. It seemed to be more friendly than Abra, so was seeing if he could make a new friend,” Akinai explained, her Gallade nodding to confirm the plan.

Her Ranger nodded, understanding, and led the group further on.

The trail seemed to be going on forever. They marched forward silently, maybe an odd laugh or two from Elgyem as she and Zen conversed about topics known to only them. Akinai silently beamed as she saw this; the Gallade had become quite a loner after evolving, tending to stay away from the rest of her teammates. The only one he tolerated for a moderate amount of time was Lia, and that was only because they shared the same evolution. All in all, it would be good for Zen to have someone to bond with.

John pointed over to a group of rocks, indicating that they should head over there to rest a while. Akinai couldn't complain in the least, the current trail was rough and difficult to travel on for a long amount of time. She leaned back on one of the larger rocks, grateful for the break.

A loud caw appeared to erupt from the fog, the sound of wing-beats following it along. A large shape, covered in black feathers, glided above them a moment, as if examining the motley crew. It eventually landed on a nearby rock, peering down at the group. The assortment of feathers on it's head gave the bird Pokemon the appearance of a fedora; this, along with it's arrogant posture, gave the creature a perfect resemblance to a crime boss.

"Are you interested in battling this Honchkrow?" John asked Akinai.

“This could be a problem,” Akinai murmured, looking over to where Zen and Elgyem were lazing. Zen had stood up and was watching the newcomer closely, clearly on edge. She couldn't blame him in the least- Honchkrow was both a Dark and Flying-type, the exact opposite and the perfect counter to the Gallade's type. In addition, most of Zen's attacks were physical. By the time he could get a hit in, Honchkrow could get two more in and easily fly away. Cryrosant and Gaard were mainly physical attackers as well, and Jade had taken a few hits from the fight with Abra earlier. To say that this situation was less then ideal was an understatement.

“Let's try to get out of here,” Akinai replied, sidestepping to avoid looking away from the wild Pokemon. “If it tries to attack though, I'm fighting back.” Zen, make sure that Elgyem stays safe, she relayed to the Gallade, grabbing on to Jade's Pokeball. Murkrow were infamous for mobbing weaker Pokemon, especially Psychic types, and Akinai doubted that their evolution were any kinder.

Zen nodded, motioning to the Elgyem that it was time to move. He held a blade up, ready to counter should the Honchkrow decide to harass his friend.

"This could be a problem," Akinai muttered, "Let's try to get out of here. If it tries to attack though, I'm fighting back."

I nodded, and slowly tried walking away from Honchkrow to show it we meant no harm. The Pokemon narrowed its eyes, watching us carefully. I noticed out of the corner of my eye that Zen raised one of his blade-arms, and held it protectively in front of Elgyem.

Honchkrow immediately turned to face Zen, mistaking the gesture as a provocative one. Cawing loudly, Honchkrow flew at Zen. The Gallade immediately ducked, and Honchkrow flew past it. Realizing it had missed its target, Honchkrow turned in the air and faced its opponent. There was no doubt about it - Honchkrow was itching to battle.

"You'll have to battle Honchkrow, now that it's in such a riled up state," I informed Akinai.

<Not good!> Zen called out, seeing that Honchkrow had decided to head after them after all. He ducked down to cover Elgyem, barely dodging the creature's attack as Honchkrow's talons raked above his head. The Gallade glared at the wild Pokemon as it reoriented itself in the air, facing the two once more.

"You'll have to battle Honchkrow, now that it's in such a riled up state," John informed Akinai.

Akinai had assumed as such from hearing Zen's cry, but nodded in response. In a way this situation worked out; she had been thinking about capturing a Murkrow one day, so capturing it's evolution would spare her the trouble of hunting around for a Dusk Stone. Unfortunately, she had not expected to have another innocent wild Pokemon nearby while attempting a capture, and Zen was definitely the last option on her team to fight an aerial battle. “Zen, stay with Elgyem! Hate to say it, but this is a battle you won't be able to win at the moment,” Akinai called out, speaking out loud so her Ranger would know that she was not trying to be unfair when her next command was enacted.

<Understood...> Zen nodded, clearly not happy and still keeping an eye on the sky. Dark-types were not known for their fairness, so he would hold his post so Honchkrow would not try to get a cheap shot on Elgyem.

Here goes nothing! Akinai tossed Jade's Pokeball upwards, giving her Pokemon a slight headstart in the air. “Jade, you're up! Start out with a Screech, then follow up with a DragonBreath,” Akinai commanded, looking towards the Honchkrow. The Screech was more of a ploy to shake up the Pokemon more than anything else, helping to allow a clear shot with another attack.

Jade appeared in a white flash of light, flapping her wings lightly in the air and swiveling about to look for her opponent. Once her eyes locked onto the Honchkrow she released a loud scream in the Pokemon's direction, the waves appearing to ripple the air as they approached ahead, and Jade flew forward. As the waves from her screech faded, the Flygon blew forth another swirling stream of violet flames, aiming for the wild Pokemon.

Akinai nodded. From the looks of things, she wasn't too bothered by this.

"Zen, stay with Elgyem! Hate to say it, but this is a battle you won't be able to win at the moment," Akinai said. A very smart move in my opinion. She knew that Zen, as a Psychic/Fighting-type Pokemon, would be in a major disadvantage against Honchkrow, and acted accordingly. I nodded approvingly.

Akinai flung a Pokeball into the air. Jade launched herself out of it, and soared through the air. Her voice screeched loudly to announce her presence. She had Honchkrow's full attention now.

"Jade, you're up! Start out with a Screech, then follow up with a DragonBreath," Akinai instructed.

Jade wasted no time. She immediately belted out a vicious Screech at Honchkrow. The Pokemon cringed in pain as Jade's loud voice echoed through his ears. Even I was wincing a little bit. Jade had quite the voice.

Taking advantage of Honchkrow's cringing state, Jade transitioned into DragonBreath. She blew out a concentrated stream of violet flames. The flames slammed into Honchkrow, and the Pokemon crowed loudly in pain. However, I knew DragonBreath was a mediocre move at best. While Honchkrow wasn't a particularly bulky Pokemon, DragonBreath would only do solid damage to it.

Honchkrow shook the attack off, regaining its poise. Eyeing Jade maliciously, Honchkrow used its first move of the battle. A black energy surrounded Honchkrow's body, making it look almost devilish in the fog.

"Honchkrow!" the Pokemon screamed, launching the energy away from its body suddenly. The energy flew in all directions and slammed into Jade. The Flygon dropped a few feet as the attack knocked her off balance. This was Dark Pulse, one of the stronger Dark-type moves out there. Coming off of Honchkrow's respectable offensive prowess, it had to be considered as a threat if Jade took many more.

Jade's screech appeared to have done it's job perfectly; Honchkrow seemed to be properly shaken, cringing in place. It still managed to keep flying in place however, even after taking a DragonBreath full-on in addition to the Screech assault, even shrugging off the latent paralysis-inducing effects that DragonBreath could cause.

“Bulky creature, isn't it,” Akinai muttered, noticing that Honchkrow didn't appear fazed other then a small cry of pain. She wasn't too happy about having Jade fight this battle, especially since the Flygon had taken some impressive damage earlier from their encounter with Abra. In addition, most of Jade's moves were of the Ground variety, and therefore useless in the sky. If she could somehow ground the Flying-type, she could do more damage, or possibly send in Gaard to finish the job. Until then, his would largely be an evade-and-counter assault.

Honchkrow, it's full attention on Jade now, let out a loud screech of her own, though this was more for show than an actual attack. The birdlike creature began to be enveloped in a shadowy aura, giving it an even more sinister look. Letting out another loud cry, the aura rippled outward in a large pulse, both protecting the user and damaging all nearby opponents. The pulse, while thankfully fading out a few feet away from Zen and Elgyem, slammed full-force into Jade. The blow knocked her flying out of sync, causing the Flygon to drop downwards

“Jade, hang in there!” Akinai called out. She had of course known that Honchkrow was a Dark-type, but it hadn't dawned on her that the Pokemon would have such a powerful attack in it's arsenal. That meant that it was both bulky and could do some impressive damage... this could be a problem.

Jade managed to catch herself, stopping her fall after only descending a few feet. She snapped her wings out and moved them, regaining her balance in the air once more. She looked over at the waiting Honchkrow, letting out a low growl. She would not be taken unaware once more.

Akinai looked towards the two sparring Pokemon, lost in thought. She had only commanded a single aerial battle before, and it had been mediocre at best. Because of this, both her and her entire team were largely inexperienced in such tactics. Plus, Honchkrow had managed to evolve in the wild, an already impressive feat, and knew this environment better then they ever would. Jade, while she loved to flaunt her flying talents at every opportunity was, in a sense, a new flier. Her Basic form could not fly, and Vibrava could only hover at best. This would be an uphill battle for them both, unless she could make the environment more suited for Jade. Speaking of which...

Zen, would you be able to put a barrier up should any stray attacks come your way? Akinai relayed over to her Gallade. For her plan to go off, she had to make certain that the others would not be hurt in the attack as well. She sent a visual image over to Zen, showing what exactly she planned for Jade to do.

<I might be able to do so, in the small case that the field would be large enough to strike down here,> Zen replied carefully. <To be honest, Lia would be far better at this than me. Special attacks and barriers are not my forte.>

Let's try to make sure that it doesn't come to that then, Akinai responded, then directed her attention to her starter. “Jade, fly higher! Retaliate with a Flamethrower if Honchkrow gets in range, then try to whip up a Sandstorm!” The last command would be a little tricky; she had never commanded such a move while in the air. She trusted that Jade would find a way though, and such a move would knock their opponent off-guard in the very least.

Jade shot upwards, going as fast as her wings would take her. The Flygon shot a quick look over at the Honchkrow to make certain that the bird was following her. The sky was her domain, and she would teach this fat crow that lesson the hard way. She held her breath a moment, a small tongue of flame leaving her mouth as she readied to blow fire at her enemy. In addition her wings began to lightly buzz, trying to gather any possible sand in the winds.

    BP-2: Flygon VS Honchkrow

    Ranger John Shay

"Bulky creature, isn't it," muttered Akinai. I shrugged, having a different perspective myself. Still, it wasn't a big enough deal for me to care too much. "Jade, fly higher! Retaliate with a Flamethrower if Honchkrow gets in range, then try to whip up a Sandstorm!"

As Akinai explained her instructions, I noticed a psychic barrier appearing in front of Zen and the Elgyem. I supposed Akinai was communicating mentally with Zen again, and returned my focus to the battle going on.

Jade had flown straight up into the air, parting the fog with her speed. Honchkrow, solely focused on the Flygon, was following closely. I could tell from the Pokemon's unforgiving eyes that she was locked on to Jade.

Jade flipped her body, turning to face Honchkrow. Honchkrow's eyes grew wide, and she spread her wings to halt her momentum. However, there was nothing she could do when Jade blew a stream of flames straight into her. Honchkrow was engulfed by the powerful Flamethrower, and started tumbling back down towards the earth.

Jade wasted no time in continuing her combination. She flapped her wings, gathering sand with the thin and feathery appendages. She quickly accumulated a large ball of sand, and took a deep breath in before blowing it down towards Honchkrow. The sand swept towards the ground, and started raging violently. Honchkrow was trapped in the sandstorm. I pulled my Ranger coat's hood over my head. Though I wasn't in the thick of the sandstorm, it was still wild enough for me to feel it.

I heard Honchkrow cry in pain. She was taking some solid damage right now. Akinai had to be satisfied.

Suddenly, a wicked black beam zapped out of the cloud of sand. As overwhelmed as she must be, Honchkrow was firing off an attack! I recognized this as Night Shade. It wasn't as strong as Dark Pulse, but I knew better than to underestimate a Pokemon like Honchkrow.

“Great job, Jade!” Akinai called up to the Flygon, seeing the blaze from Jade's Flamethrower thoroughly singe the Honchkrow. This time the wild Pokemon definitely felt the blow; it's feathery form began to sink downwards a bit before catching itself. In addition, Jade's Sandstorm attempt had been successful. This one appeared to be even more improvised than she had expected, however; she had managed to form the sand into a makeshift sphere, gathering as much as possible before sending it down towards the Honchkrow. The sphere collided with the Pokemon before slamming down into the ground, creating a raging sandstorm.

Akinai backed away from the center of the storm, trying to avoid the worst of the assault. She took a look over and noticed that her Ranger was attempting to do the same, covering his face with a hood to weather the storm. “Sorry about that,” Akinai apologized to John. “I was hoping that the field would have been further up in the sky.” Judging from the shimmering golden field around Zen and Elgyem, the Gallade had been successful in placing a barrier up. It appeared to be slightly more translucent than the ones she had seen used by her Gardevoir, but seemed sturdy nonetheless. Zen, are you going to be alright holding that up?

<So long as the storm doesn't get any fiercer, we'll be fine,> Zen replied, sounding a little stressed. <Remind me to get back at Jade once we're out of here! I gave her the same image you sent me earlier on what she was supposed to do, and she still pulled that stunt without warning.>

Well, there was that incident at the Center a few days ago... Akinai pointed out. She had no idea what had happened that day, save for the fact that the nurse had hurriedly returned her Pokemon without a word along with Jade and Zen being very, very quiet for the rest of the day.

Zen turned away his head at this but stayed silent, opting to focus on the barrier for now. Judging from the barrier's color, the Gallade was utilizing Protect to guard both himself and Elgyem; he would need his full concentration on the task at hand.

Honchkrow may have been knocked down, but it definitely was far from out. A sudden beam of energy shot out from the storm's center, heading straight towards where Jade was, hovering above the cloud. Akinai was uncertain what type of attack it was but, judging from the hue, she assumed it was either of the Dark or Ghost-type variety. Either way, it did not bode well for Jade.

Let's see, what do I have on my side... sand, sand, and more sand, Akinai mused. It's only a slight chance, but... “Jade, try to dodge to the side!” she called out to the Flygon. “Once the coast is clear, blind it with a Sand-Attack before striking with a SonicBoom!” Though she knew that Jade could use much more powerful attacks, for now her plan was to keep their opponent as grounded as possible.

Jade quickly rolled to the left, trying to avoid the incoming Night Shade. Once the attack was over she darted down into the sand cloud, fearless of the battering winds raging around her. As soon as she had spotted the Honchkrow, she swung her wings forward, blowing a great deal of sand at the creature. To finish her combo, the Flygon belted out another loud screech, this one blowing sound-waves powerful enough to pierce the air.

    BP-3: Flygon VS Honchkrow

    Ranger John Shay

"Jade, try to dodge to the side! Once the coast is clear, blind it with a Sand-Attack before striking with a SonicBoom!" Akinai shouted.

Jade wasted no time, flipping to the side. The Night Shade missed her chest by inches. However, a miss was a miss, and Jade capitalized immediately. The Flygon whipped up another sphere of sand, and blew it at the Honchkrow. The one was smaller and more concentrated. It was aimed directly at Honchkrow.

"Honch!" the Pokemon cried, the sand smashing into her face. Honchkrow shook her head, clearly annoyed. However, Sand-Attack wasn't an attack that did damage, it only annoyed the target.

Jade continued with her combination. She screeched loudly at Honchkrow, and the Pokemon was overwhelmed by sound waves. While SonicBoom was not particularly powerful, it was an attack that really dominated the target Pokemon. A combination of Sand-Attack and SonicBoom would be very effective at irritating Honchkrow. Not only that, but I remembered that the sandstorm Jade had whipped up moments ago must help achieve that as well. I was sure Honchkrow was feeling very trapped right now.

"Honch!" Honchkrow cried again. Shaking her head in annoyance, Honchkrow eyed Jade. She knew she had to get an attack off. The Big Boss Pokemon opened her beak, and a purplish-black energy started to form. This was Shadow Ball - yet another Special Ghost-move. This one was much more powerful than Night Shade. Crowing loudly, Honchkrow fired the attack at Jade.

Jade had managed to dodge the incoming Night Shade, rolling to the side at the last moment. She then blew another sphere of sand forward, smaller then the last once but still managing to harass the Honchkrow. In addition, some of the sand had managed to blind the Dark-type somewhat; it let out a caw of both annoyance and slight pain as the grit stung it's eyes. This gave the Flygon plenty of time to execute her SonicBoom, and soon her opponent was struck by the powerful sound-waves.

As the Sandstorm winds swirled about, Akinai watched the Honchkrow carefully. All appeared to going just as planned so far, and Jade's attacks had once again been executed perfectly. All that was left was to ground the bird, though exactly how to keep it grounded she was not sure. Paralysis might work, but Gaard was the only one who possessed a move that could inflict it with no trouble. Unless the Absol could somehow sprout wings, this was hardly an option.

Akinai looked over at Zen, curious on what his opinion was on the matter. Instead of helping her out, it added yet another problem to the situation; the Gallade's Protect barrier was starting to shimmer, and Zen was utilizing his full attention on keeping it up. Elgyem could only watch, possibly fearfully wondering what exactly it had gotten itself into. “Well, there goes that option,” Akinai muttered. She could no longer use Zen as a bridge to link her to Jade, not while the Gallade was struggling at keeping himself and the fellow Psychic-type safe. This battle would either have to end quickly, or another method would have to be used. She could always recall Zen, but that would leave the Elgyem a sitting duck.

Honchkrow let out another caw, this one sounding much more challenging. Due to all the sand flying around her, she could hardly tell where to fly next. Add to the fact that had been roasted, battered with yet more sand, and hit with deafening sound twice, she was not a happy camper. The Honchkrow opened her large beak, focusing on a sphere of shadowy energy. Aiming where the SonicBoom waves had originated from, the wild Pokemon fired away.

As the sphere flew forward, Akinai took a quick look at it before commanding her next attack. It definitely appeared to be a Ghost-type move; next to useless against a Normal-type, but would do a moderate amount of damage towards Jade. She doubted the Flygon would be able to dodge this one though; that meant that Jade would have to weather the blow. There was possibly a way to lessen the damage a bit however... “Jade, slam that bird into the ground! Go with a Faint Attack, then release a DragonBreath at close quarters!” Even though Faint Attack was not of the Ghost Element, the Dark factor in it could possibly dissipate the Ball a bit. Plus, a DragonBreath at such close range had more of a chance of working at it's full potential.

Jade hesitated a moment, seeing the incoming attack heading towards her. Finally she dive-bombed towards the Honchkrow, glowing with a dark aura as she did so. She readied another Dragonbreath as she approached, holding her breath a moment before blowing out the shimmering flames at full force.

    BP-4: Flygon VS Honchkrow

    Ranger John Shay

Honchkrow's Shadow Ball rushed towards Jade, the contents flowing viciously.

"Jade, slam that bird into the ground! Go with a Faint Attack, then release a DragonBreath at close quarters!" Akinai commanded.

Jade, understanding what Akinai wanted to do, used her Faint Attack. She flew into the Shadow Ball, flying through it. I realized what Akinai's plan had been, and smiled at her cleverness. Faint Attack, being a Dark-type move, was naturally superior against Ghost-type moves such as Shadow Ball. The Dark-type energy associated with Faint Attack should, in theory, weaken Shadow Ball some. Indeed, it seemed as though Jade seemed a little less affected by the attack than what I would have expected. Regardless, the attack had done damage.

Jade continued flying towards Honchkrow. She came from Honchkrow's right, and Honchkrow laughed. She seemed to think that this attack was too plain and hopped to her left to avoid the move. Suddenly, Jade swooped to her left side. This was Faint Attack - an attack that utilized the element of surprise to its advantage. Jade tackled the startled Honchkrow, knocking her to the ground. However, Honchkrow quickly picked herself back up. Being a Dark-type move, Faint Attack had been superior against the Shadow Ball. However, against Honchkrow, also a Dark-type, Faint Attack would have a much more reduced effect. Even with Jade's Screech from earlier factored in, Honchkrow should take only decent damage from Faint Attack.

Jade didn't seem bothered in the slightest by Faint Attack's lack of effect. Now in close quarters with her target, Jade took a deep breath, and blew out a stream of purple flames.

"Honch!" Honchkrow cried, remembering this attack from earlier. She immediately flew up, avoiding the DragonBreath. I noticed that some of the embers had managed to singe her body, but she seemed relatively unharmed by the move - a stroke of luck. Still, Honchkrow was really starting to take damage now. The Sandstorm damage, I noticed, was really beginning to add up. Honchkrow would likely be only able to take so much more.

Snarling, Honchkrow gave Jade an evil eye. The proud bird was unhappy to be forced into such an unfavorable situation.

Suddenly, Honchkrow disappeared. I blinked. Where had the Pokemon gone? My eyes scoured the skies, looking for Honchkrow's silhouette. I found it, right above Jade. The Flygon had no clue where her opponent had gone. I realized Honchkrow had used Sucker Punch, and was now going to strike from above, where Jade would not suspect an attack. Not only that, but Honchkrow seemed to be glowing with some familiar dark energy. It was Dark Pulse - the same attack Honchkrow had begun the battle with. Honchkrow was going for a combination move!

I looked at Akinai. If the Sucker Punch/Dark Pulse combination landed, even if only a little bit, Jade could take an eyebrow-raising amount of damage. She had to do something.

Akinai's hopes rose a moment as Jade sent Honchkrow crashing towards the ground, doing some decent damage to the creature. Sadly, this did not last long; she silently cursed to herself as she watched the Honchkrow shake off the blow and take off once more In addition, the Dark-type seemed prepared for Jade's DragonBreath, managing to only take minimal damage as it dodged out of the way. “So much for that plan...”

Despite her excellent escape, Honchkrow was starting to truly feel her wounds. The Sandstorm still battered against her, and the Flygon's earlier attacks had definitely hurt. She glared at her opponent, clearly not happy about being put into a situation so far out of her element.

Jade gave an equal glare back at the Honchkrow, giving out a low growl that somehow managed to carry back down to the ground. The fact that her last attack had almost missed was annoying the Flygon to no end; she never missed. She intended for this smug feathery creature to pay for that, with double the pain to make up for her prior mistake.

“Looks like someone's annoyed,” Akinai remarked as she watched the two Pokemon, a grim smile on her face. Even though Jade tried to act serious most of the time, her starter had quite a temper once she was riled up. While this would mean that the Pokemon would be trying to inflict as much damage as possible or try to infuriate her foe, it also meant the Flygon would start to ignore orders if they didn't seem to suit her current plan. Things could get quite tricky now.

<We have a problem,> Zen called out to Akinai, his mental voice sounding somewhat strained.

Only if Jade decides to take matters into her own hands, Akinai responded, then caught herself. Right... the barrier. Are you still able to hold it? This battle is far from over.

<Tell the Green Wonder to hurry up then,> Zen snapped in reply. <I can hold this for maybe a minute or two more, but that's it!> It was unlike the Gallade to be so abrupt; Zen must be truly struggling now. The Elgyem appeared to be worried as well, it was tugging on one of Zen's legs, as if asking what to do.

Working on it! This was indeed a problem. The battle with Honchkrow demanded her full attention, but she couldn't let the Elgyem get hurt by the storm as well. She could attempt to capture the creature by rolling over a Ball to Zen and let him explain the situation to the Psychic-type, but she would have to take her eye off of Honchkrow to get the capture device out of her bag. Knowing her luck, the crow would decide to attack while she was distracted.

As if she had read the Trainer's mind, Honchkrow suddenly disappeared without warning. She reappeared directly above the Flygon, and readied herself into a dive. In addition, she began to glow with a dark energy, charging up another move. It was time to see just how the ambusher felt to be the ambushed!

Akinai frantically searched the skies, her eyes finally resting on the wild Pokemon as it appeared above Jade. She had no idea what the Honchkrow was planning, but it was almost guaranteed to be no good; Dark-types rarely played fair. She needed to get Jade out of there, and fast. The problem, once again, was the Sandstorm. While the winds were doing decent damage to the Honchkrow, it would also inflict pain on half of her team. Cryrosant, her Aggron, was the only other teammate that could weather the storm. Unfortunately, Honchkrow could just fly circles around the Pokemon; Aggron were far from mobile. Zen, not only would he take damage, was otherwise occupied. That left only one other option. Zen, tell Jade to dive down to me, and quickly!

Zen didn't respond, but Jade appeared to pause a moment, as if listening to something from afar. Suddenly she dove down towards Akinai, folding her wings in to increase her downfall. Hopefully, Honchkrow would be in hot pursuit.

Akinai held up Jade's Pokeball and silently recalled the Flygon, her form turning into a red beam of light. She then tossed her Absol's Ball forward, aiming for where she guessed the Honchkrow would descend. “Quick, use Detect! Once the coast is clear, go with a Thunder Wave!”

Gaard materialized once more in a white light, glancing about before looking up at the Honchkrow. His red eyes suddenly began to glow and dart about, as if watching for any incoming attacks. The Absol's white fur began to spark with electricity as well, trying to attempt building up enough of a static charge for an attack.

    BP-5: Absol VS Honchkrow

    Ranger John Shay

With a concerned look on her face, Akinai immediately looked to Zen. A moment later, Zen nodded. I wondered what they were saying to each other, but I found out quickly enough.

Akinai held up two Pokeballs. At the same time, Jade flew back towards Akinai. As familiar as Pokemon and Trainer were, it was simply impossible to believe that Jade knew that Akinai was going to recall her. Therefore, I deduced that Akinai had told Zen to tell Jade to return silently.

With Honchkrow chasing after her, Jade was zapped back into her Pokeball. At the same time, Gaard leapt out of the other Pokeball Akinai held.

"Quick, use Detect! Once the coast is clear, go with a Thunder Wave!" Akinai commanded.

Absol avoided dawdling, wasting no time in using Detect. His eyes gleamed as he used the move, and then he instantly sidestepped. Honchkrow's Sucker Punch narrowly missed him, and I smiled. Detect was, though it would not seem to be one at first, a very exciting move to watch. The user would sharpen their senses and show off both incredible agility as well as awareness to avoid incoming attacks.

However, Honchkrow wasn't finished yet. The dark energy surrounding Honchkrow pulsed - at the next pulse, Dark Pulse would be unleashed in all directions around Gaard. The Absol immediately retreated away from Honchkrow, realizing what was going to happen. A vicious Dark Pulse was launched in all directions, and Gaard, due to Detect, managed to get away in time.

"Absol," Gaard muttered with an air of confidence, waiting for the Dark Pulse's leftover waves to abide. The moment they did, Jade fired a small, light blue wave of electricity at Honchkrow from his horn. The Pokemon cawed and tried to take off when it saw the Thunder Wave heading for her, but by the time she realized, it was too late. Honchkrow was zapped by the Thunder Wave and paralyzed.

"Honchkrow," the Pokemon muttered angrily, struggling to get airborne and back into familiar territory. However, the paralysis seemed to be working - Honchkrow was unable to move. The sandstorm viciously ripped into her, and she cringed. I could see her eyes narrowing as she got weaker and weaker.

Beside Akinai, Gaard stuttered a little too. Unlike Jade, Gaard lacked a natural resistance to the Sandstorm. It was due to abide soon, but for the moment, Gaard would be taking damage along with Honchkrow.
