“Alex, can you take this run?” I asked my brother. I had been assigned this run, but I wasn’t too excited about going to Oktori this time of the year. I preferred to go somewhere like the Lakes, or the Gardens, but there weren’t that many requests to go into that area around this time.

“No, I can’t. They already assigned me to go to Deckbi.” He shrugged.

“Ugh, damnit!” I grumbled. “Why couldn’t they give that one to me?” Colossus, my Golett then tugged me on my shoulder. “What is it?”

“I’ll go for you.” Colossus said. “Vortex and I can go. I can lead, he can translate.” Vortex was my Alakazam that I had just recently received in a trade from a friend.

“Hmm. Alright. That works then.” I said. I pulled out a Pokeball from my pocket and tossed it besides me. A large brown, humanoid shaped Pokémon stood beside me. He had an enormous brown mustache. “You up for it?”

“Yes. I will go along on this run with Colossus.” He said. I just shrugged and sat back down on my desk.

“Okay then. All the stuff you guys will need is in that bag.” I said, pointing towards a dark grey backpack that was lying behind my door. Colossus walked over towards it and picked it up. Vortex then teleported them both to Oktori.

    -

“We’ll just wait here then for the Trainer to arrive then.” Colossus said to Vortex, and sat by the outpost sign.

Hazy fog clouded over Mount Oktori in the distance. The mountain jutted into the sky, with an almost savage appearance to it. The mountain was my destination, and despite its eerie appearance, I couldn't wait to step foot into the place.

My faithful Dragonite flew above as I made my way towards the Ranger Outpost, where I would find my Ranger waiting for me. She was not as excited as I was to be heading to Oktori. The mountain was home to many vicious Ice-type Pokemon. Dragonite hated Ice-types, even though I had assured her that she would not be doing battle with those Ice-types. I had brought Infernape, a Fire/Fighting-type Pokemon which was very effective against Ice-types, to take care of those Pokemon.

I continued along the road. The Ranger Outpost should be just up ahead, according to my map. Indeed, I could see a structure hidden in the fog up ahead. My Ranger should be waiting there for me.

Arriving at the Ranger Outpost, I found two Pokemon there - but no Ranger. There was a Golett and an Alakazam sitting on the bench. It didn't seem as though they had noticed me quite yet. I wasn't sure what the Pokemon were doing there, but it really wasn't any of my business. My Ranger, meanwhile, didn't seem to be here yet. Taking a seat on the opposite bench, I waited for my Ranger.

“You think he’ll show soon?” Colossus said to Vortex.

“Yes. He should be here in less than ten minutes.” Vortex anwsered. “He’s the one that wanted to come, he’ll show up.” Colossus just nodded. Like Vortex had said, less than ten minutes later, a kid came up to the outpost and sat on the opposite side of them. He wasn't informed that they would be taking him, so he wasn't expectng two Pokemon to be waiting for him.

“Guess you were right.” Colossus said, and with that, they vanished into thin air. Less than five seconds later, they reappeared in front of the boy. Vortex had teleported them in front of him.

“John Webster Shay?” Vortex asked telepathically, though he already knew it was. “I’m Vortex, and this is Colossus. We’ll be your Rangers on this run.” He said with a quick bow. Colossus gave a smile and a nod. “When you are ready, we shall take off.”

Suddenly, I heard a poof behind me. I turned. The Golett and Alakazam had disappeared!

"What the..." I muttered under my breath.

    "John Webster Shay?"

I turned again. The Golett and Alakazam were standing in front of me. Though they towered over me as I sat and cast intimidating shadows, it did not seem as though they bore any ill intent. Their eyes were friendly, and their body language was inviting. I nodded - I was John Webster Shay.

"I’m Vortex, and this is Colossus. We’ll be your Rangers on this run." Alakazam bowed. Was he the one that had spoken? I realized the words had been telepathically voiced into my mind - it must have been him. "When you are ready, we shall take off."

I nodded again - my voice wasn't functioning. This was a huge surprise. I had definitely not expected to be going through the Park while led by Pokemon. The logic in my mind tried to figure things out. Based on what I knew of Alakazams (I did own one), the Alakazam, Vortex, had probably been the one that had spoken. Golett, then, was the one named Colossus. Based on how at easy they looked, they probably were indeed how they said were - my Rangers.

"Alright," I said. I was definitely surprised, but as a Ranger myself, I figured that there would be no problems. If Vortex and Colossus turned out to be hostile, I could certainly deal with them. If they were unable to perform as Rangers, I could handle myself. If they were as good Rangers as the human Rangers I knew, then there should be no concerns at all. No matter what, there wouldn't be any problems. I smiled at them invitingly, and nodded. "Let's go, then."

"Alright," He said, sounding surprised, which was normal since usually Pokemon didn't act as Rangers. Only a seldom few ever actually got to be Rangers, mainly because it wasn't needed unless Rangers were busy. Since it was December, it was the second busiest time of the year, the first being summer. "Let's go, then." He said once he had grasped it all.

"Very well then." Vortex said, motioning for Colossus to take the lead. Colossus nodded and began walking into Oktori. Colossus and Cortex decided to stay on the first path they came across and stay on it until another one came their way.

They weren't very far in when strange grunting sounds could be heard in the distance. Colossus raised one arm in front of John, signaling him to stop. The small Ghost type Pokemon listened carefully to where the sound was coming from, then gave to ok for them to move on. He led them to a small area with many sharp jagged rocks.

Suddenly, one of the rocks shattered to many pieces. The group looked around to see what could have caused it, but nothing could be seen. Not until they turned around and saw a small round, yellow Pokemon standing there. The Pokemon had raised one of its arms, which had a small boxing glove on the hand area.

"Looks like this Makuhita wants to battle. Are you interested?" Vortex asked John.

"Very well then," Vortex said, leading me into Mt. Oktori. Colossus walked alongside his partner, and I made sure to stay close behind with Dragonite.

"Dragonite?" Dragonite murmured to me quietly.

I nodded reassuringly. "I feel pretty sure we can trust them to be who they say they are. They seem at peace in this environment, and show no signs of hostility at all. Don't worry, Dragonite - if an issue comes up, we can definitely take them."

Small, jagged rocks lined the path. A dense fog covered the area. From what I knew about Mt. Oktori, some very intriguing Pokemon lived in the area - primarily Fighting and Ice-types. There were quite a numerous amount of Pokemon I was interested in that were of those types, and it was highly likely that I would find at least a couple of them here.

Very quickly, my first encounter appeared before me. Within the first few minutes of our hike, one of the small rocks by the road exploded into bits. A fat, yellow Pokemon wearing boxing gloves stepped out from behind him, grinning crazily. I recognized the Pokemon - this was Makuhita!

"Looks like this Makuhita wants to battle. Are you interested?" Vortex asked me.

I gave serious thought to it. Hariyama was a Pokemon with incredible bulk, and some offensive talent as well. They definitely had potential as a member of my team. However, there were multiple things working against it. First of all, it was slow as hell. In the URPG world, Speed was perhaps even more important than in competitive battling. Next, there were simply many better Fighting-types that could be used in lieu of Hariyama. I hoped to capture some of those better Fighting-types on this trip, so I declined.

"Let's leave it be," I said to Vortex.

"Let's leave it be," John said to Vortex after some serious thought. Makuhita was about to come at them anyways, but Vortex stepped forward, ready to take it on. Makuhita knew it couldn't win, so backed off and went away. At least John didn't have to battle something he didn't want now. It was a waste of time to do so. At least now they could move on.

"Let's leave this area." Vortex said, as Colossus gave the signal to move on. However, they didn't even get to move or go anywhere because a new challenger had appeared. A small light blue Pokemon with two disk looking things coming out of his head stepped up. The Pokemon flexed his muscles towards the group. He had a smug look of confidence on his face, which was a tad bit interesting.

"This Pokemon appears to be interested in a battle." Vortex said. "Care to spar with it? If you want to run though, you may need a Pokedoll."

Vortex nodded, and led me away from the Makuhita. Though the Pokemon did seem a little disappointed to see us leave, it did not follow. I wonder if the fact that the presence of Vortex, an evidently very powerful Psychic-type Pokemon, or my Dragonite, an equally powerful Flying-type, affected that decision.

However, we only took a few paces before our next encounter showed up. A Machop stepped out of the mist, eyeing me with a cocky look on its face.

"This Pokemon appears to be interested in a battle." Vortex said, "Care to spar with it? If you want to run though, you may need a Pokedoll."

I shook my head. As good as Machamp were, I already had one and had no need for another. Though Machop would likely have some trade value, it was too early in the run to capture Pokemon for their trade value, particularly when Machop's value wasn't even spectacular.

"Let's leave him too. However, if he tries to follow, I don't mind battling him. It should be easy for Dragonite," I said.

"Alright, let's depart from this area." Vortex said. As he did, he released a bright blue light that hit Colossus, John, and his Dragonite. The group was instantly teleported away from the Machop. Had they stayed, the little guy would definitely want to battle him. Machop were known to not back down from any challenge, even if they had no chance of winning.

"Anything in particular that you are looking for?" Vortex asked John. "If it is Fighting type Pokemon that you wish to seek, we should try heading up the mountain. In fact, we'll just head up there now." With that, the group began to head towards the trail that lead to the top of the mountain. The bottom was a bit rocky, but it appeared to be more and more covered in snow the higher the mountain went.

They had finally reached the beginning of the trail. The group was about to begin climbing the mountain, when a larger than normal snowflake fell in front of them. Two baby blue eyes shot open and started back at Vortex, then moved over towards John. Vortex wasn't sure what it wanted.

"Want to do battle with this one?" Vortex asked. "Be careful though, I can't read its thoughts so I don't know what its up to."

OOC: I heard it's genderless but a male please

"Anything in particular that you are looking for?" Vortex inquired. "If it is Fighting type Pokemon that you wish to seek, we should try heading up the mountain. In fact, we might as well just head up there now."

I nodded. Fighting Pokemon were my number one priority on this run, though there were a few Ice-type Pokemon I would be interested in adding to my team as well.

We began heading towards the mountain. It was visible in the distance, towering high into the sky. The mountain had an ominous look to it. The tip was capped in snow, but for the most part, the mountain looked more rocky than snowy. That was where the Fighting-type Pokemon would reside - the more brutal areas of the ecosystem. Fighting-types loved living in such tough environments, so we would definitely find some good ones there.

Vortex and Colossus led the way. We made our way to the beginning of our trail, and did not waste any time dawdling. Immediately, we took our first step on the trail. Our boots crunched into the snow, leaving footprints behind.

    "Cryogonal!"

I heard a cry from above, and looked up. A large snowflake had leaped out of a tree from alongside the path. The snowflake touched down in front of us, and its electric blue eyes glared at us. No, it wasn't a snowflake - it was a Cryogonal! I recognized this Pokemon, it was a very rare Ice-type Pokemon. I must be quite lucky to happen upon it.

"Want to do battle with this one?" Vortex asked. "Be careful though, I can't read its thoughts so I don't know what it's up to."

I bit my lip, thinking hard. Generally, my rule of thumb was to avoid capturing a Pokemon for its trade value alone - it was usually a waste of time and energy. I had no interest in Cryogonal myself outside of entering it in my PokeDex, and while this was a golden opportunity to do so, it may end up being a waste of a slot in the three Pokemon I took out. However, Cryogonal was a Pokemon with certain market value - I would definitely be able to dangle it for something good, probably something better than some of the Pokemon that I would take home with me. I licked my lips, and made up my mind.

"I think I will battle it," I responded. I looked at Dragonite. There was no way I was going to send her into a battle against an Ice-type like Cryogonal. "Stand back for this one, Dragonite. I can handle this with Infernape."

I grabbed the other Pokeball off of my belt, and hurled it in between Cryogonal and myself. Infernape leaped out of it, screeching boisterously.

"Infernape! Infernape!" he yelled, prancing around energetically. Realizing the temperature was cold, Infernape made the flame on his head larger. I smiled at this amusingly cocky act.

"Alright, Infernape, let's not waste any time here. Start with Fake Out, and then transition into a Flame Charge!" I commanded.

The Fake Out-filler move combination was a favorite of ours - it had worked very well for us during the Halloween Event that had taken us to the Caves to rescue a missing scout team. However, we had usually Faked Out into an elemental punch because of the added power and variety in type coverage. Here, Flame Charge would be a more ideal selection, as this battle looked as though it would be a slightly more drawn-out affair. Flame Charge would provide Infernape with a handy Speed boost that could give it a bit of an advantage over the course of this battle.

Infernape bent down a little, then leaped forward, using the added momentum to zip over to Cryogonal. He drew back a fist, ready to deliver a startling slap to Cryogonal. This was Fake Out. Though it was a weak move, it was an ideal move to lead off a battle with. The target would be caught off guard by Infernape's Speed and flinch, giving an easy opportunity for Infernape to follow up with a stronger move up close (in this case Flame Charge). Already, I could see flames beginning to form around Infernape's body. Infernape would tackle Cryogonal's body with the flames surrounding him at a high speed - that would be Flame Charge. It wasn't particularly powerful either, but it boosted Infernape's Speed, and the type advantage should also help to offset the move's lack of power.

    @NitroOOC: Going from Colossus POV

"I think I will battle it," John finally said. It appeared that he had a hard time deciding whether or not he wanted to do battle with Cryogonal. He finally decided that he wanted it."Stand back for this one, Dragonite. I can handle this with Infernape."

I knew that would be his choice. No one would send a Dragon type Pokemon in to battle an Ice type. Not unless they had something to prove or had no other choice. Infernape though, he was the obvious choice for this battle. However, he was going to have to take things slow. Weaken it down in a timely manner so that he doesn't knock it out.

I wasn't too informed on this Pokemon, and clearly, neither was Vortex since he couldn't get through the ice barrier and read Cryogonal's mind. That was a bit rare for him to be unable to do something like that, he usually managed with little effort. He could easily ready into John's mind right now if he wanted too, but his ethics didn't allow him too without permission.

John tossed out a Pokeball in front of him and a large, long-tailed, fire monkey was released. Infernape cried out its name twice and took a ready stance. "Alright, Infernape, let's not waste any time here. Start with Fake Out, and then transition into a Flame Charge!" He commanded. That was a good way to start in my opionion. Fake Out would do little damage, but also prevent Cryogonal from using a move rigt off the back. Flame Charge was a Fire type move that would be super effective on an Ice type like this one, but because it was a weak move, it wouldn't do much.

Infernape took off an incredible speed. The fire monkey raised his left and right arms above his head as he headed towards Cryogonal. He brought both hands together, making a small wave of energy that hit the Snowflake Pokemon. I saw Cryogonal flinch a little at the attack, but before it could even recover from the attack, Infernape hit it again. This time though, he was covered in flames. He slammed his body into the Ice types, who cried out in pain.

Infernape sped back to his original position at an ever greater speed than before. That was Flame Charge's after effect. It caused the speed of the user to rise one stage, this would come in useful later on.

Cryogonal laid in the ground. I wasn't sure what it was doing, probably catching its breath. That is what I thought, until I saw a small, light blue glimmer coming from its direction and a small force field like plate covered Cryogonal. The Pokemon was using either Light Screen or Reflect. However, judging by the attacks Infernape was using, it had to be Reflect.

This battle was just barely starting, so the interesting stuff was yet to come. John was taking this nice and slow, which was a good thing, because Cryogonal was going to be a tough opponent. He'd better not let his gaurd down.

Infernape slapped Cryogonal, and the Pokemon flinched. Infernape immediately transitioned into Flame Charge. The flames around his body suddenly grew bigger, and Infernape tackled Cryogonal.

"Cryogonal!" the Pokemon cried, falling down. Infernape leaped away from Cryogonal, regrouping closer to me. The way he stood, with his knees bent a little and his back slightly hunched, indicated that Flame Charge had indeed boosted his speed.

"Great job, Infernape!" I called, and Infernape smiled at me.

Cryogonal remained supine on the ground. I wasn't sure what it was doing. It seemed to be only lying there. I stared at it hard, but Cryogonal was truly not moving a fraction of an inch. Had it fainted already? I was aware that its Defense stat was quite poor, but I had never imagined that it would even be close to fainting already. Sure, Flame Charge had been a super-effective hit, but both Fake Out and Flame Charge were incredibly weak moves. Cryogonal should still have loads of health remaining.

I raised myself up on my toes to get a slightly higher point of view. What was Cryogonal doing? As I shifted my position, I saw a faint blue wall of energy glimmer. That was Reflect, I realized! Cryogonal must have been playing dead. I should have known immediately that there was no way Cryogonal would've taken so much damage from Fake Out and Flame Charge. It must have taken only a little bit of damage as I had expected, but had pretended to take more so I wouldn't notice the Reflect. Indeed, the Reflect did camouflage with the snowy backdrop.

Cryogonal floated back up. It locked eyes with my Pokemon from within its protective barrier. Fortunately, protective barriers were not a problem against Infernape. He had a move to deal with them.

"Infernape, use Brick-" I began. However, I stopped. Infernape glanced at me out of the corner of his eye. It must have been wondering what the matter was. I smiled.

"Let's play a bit of a game instead of taking the conventional route," I said, my grin spreading across my face. "Use Encore, and then use Substitute!"

Infernape nodded, understanding what I wanted to do. Generally, using moves like Encore and Substitute was something I preferred to do in actual battles against Trainers rather than battles against wild Pokemon. However, against a Cryogonal that was clearly as crafty as any Trainer was, I knew I had to keep my head up and my eyes active.

Infernape immediately began clapping. He kept his eyes transfixed on to Cryogonal - a vital part of the move. Cryogonal would find itself receiving a full load of attention from Infernape, and that would trick it into thinking that Infernape was impressed by its Reflect. Therefore, it would continue using Reflect until it realized it was being tricked. Indeed, my Infernape was just as crafty as Cryogonal, if not even more.

The next move Infernape would use, when it was done with Encore, was Substitute. That move replaced Infernape with an identical clone. However, while that clone looked exactly the same as Infernape and could even attack, it was much weaker than Infernape. The Substitute clone would die very quickly the moment Cryogonal's Encore ended. However, it should give Infernape some extra time to play with. I knew that Cryogonal were notorious stallers, and from the looks of things, this one was hardly any different.

"Infernape, use Brick-" John finally said after catching on to what Cryogonal was doing. That Pokemon was indeed sneaky. With Reflect set up though, Brick Break appeared to be a wise and obvious choice, but for some reason, he stopped.

"Let's play a bit of a game instead of taking the conventional route," He said. "Use Encore, and then use Substitute!" If I had an eyebrow, it would be raised right now. I was a bit surprised that he wanted to 'play' with Cryogonal like this. In that way, he reminded me of Rex. Rex loved playing around and messing with wild Pokemon before capturing them. I just didn't take this guy to be one of those guys, he seemed more of a straight shooter.

Infernape began clapping and pretending to be interested in the move Cryogonal performed last. I wasn't totally sure how that hypnotized the opponent into thinking that he was impressed with whatever move they use, and without their knowledge, forcing them to use the same move repeatedly. It just seemed odd. Then again, it has never happened to me before. Anyways, Cryogonal took the bait and was now using Reflect again. It appeared to be adding a second barrier on top of the first barrier. However, Infernape shouldn't have a problem breaking through both of them at the same time.

Now that Cryogonal was busy thinking people were impressed with his move, Infernape began creating a clone of himself, just as John had ordered. The clone took away a quarter of Infernape's health. That clone would take all and any damage dished out by this Cryogonal, once it had come to its sense that is. With the clone now completed, Infernape just stood by grinning at the Cryongal and waiting for his next orders.

Cryogonal fell for Infernape's Encore, a look of pride . I had hardly expected anything else, of course. My Infernape was very adept at using Encore, since it was a move I was very fond of. Now, Cryogonal would be locked in to Reflect for a little while until it realized it was being tricked.

Under the belief that Infernape was genuinely impressed, Cryogonal continued to use Reflect. It created a second barrier over the first one, both looking exactly the same. No matter - Infernape's Brick Break should have no problem with the Reflects regardless of how many there were.

Realizing his Encore had been successful, Infernape moved on to Substitute. A cloud of smoke poofed beside Infernape, and another Infernape emerged from within the smoke. This Infernape was an identical clone to mine that had been created by the Substitute move. This clone would take any and all damage that Cryogonal would dish out (after Encore ended, of course). The clone only had a quarter of the HP the original had, but with Encore in play as well, Substitute should last for a while and sponge up a nice amount of damage once Cryogonal started attacking again.

"Alright, Infernape, good job!" I shouted. "Let's use Slack Off to regenerate some of that health you just lost!"

Infernape nodded, and closed his eyes. A relaxed look crossed his face. If Slack Off was working perfectly, Infernape should be regenerating some health right now, making up for whatever Substitute had cost him. With Cryogonal locked into Reflect for a little bit longer, I had some time to play with.

Unfortunately, my Infernape didn't have any reliable status-afflicting moves - the best he had were moves with a 10% chance side effect, such as Flamethrower and ThunderPunch. Having a reliable status move would be helpful right now, as getting a status ailment on to the target Pokemon helped with capturing it. However, since that wasn't the case and Infernape lacked a reliable status move, it was an easy decision which move I would be using after Slack Off.

"Infernape, transition into Flamethrower after you're done with Slack Off," I said. For what it's worth, I added, "If possible, try to focus more on inflicting a burn on Cryogonal rather than damage."

Though the effectiveness of asking a Pokemon to try and increase the chances of a status ailment being afflicted as a side effect may be quite dubious, I figured it was worth a shot. On a stall-based Pokemon like Cryogonal, a damaging status ailment like Burn would help neutralize some of what Cryogonal may try to do defensively. I wasn't too worried with the chances of Cryogonal being overexposed to the burn and fainting, as I knew that Cryogonal had a reliable health recovery move in Recover.

"Alright, Infernape, good job!" Nitro cried out. It was alway a good idea to praise and encourage the Pokemon battling for you. Made them feel a lot better about their performence, and only making them want to do better. I knew that, because that was how I felt, and I was positive a majority of Pokemon did as well. "Let's use Slack Off to regenerate some of that health you just lost!"

I thought it was a bit too early to be regenerating lost health. I mean, yeah, Substiute made him lose about a quarter of his health, but didn't seem necessary at the moment. Anyways, it wasn't my call, so I just kept my opinion to myself. Infernape had a relaxed face on now, and it was clear to all that he was recovering the lost health. His lazy expression and attitude at this stage in Slack Off would have left him vulnerable to attack from Cryogonal. However, since the overgrown snowflake was still enchanted by Encore, he didn't have to worry about anything momentarily.

"Infernape, transition into Flamethrower after you're done with Slack Off," John ordered. "If possible, try to focus more on inflicting a burn on Cryogonal rather than damage."

I knew some Pokemon could inflict a burn easily with Flamethrower, but the method in doing so was extremely difficult. It was already hard enough to inflict a burn because there was like less than a ten percent chance that it would leave that status effect. Infernape took in a deep breath and brought up the flames from within him.

Out came a large stream of flames and engulfed the large snowflake. I could see its light baby blue eyes widen. I couldn't imagine the pain it had to endure from that attck, but this Pokemon appeared to be pretty strong, because it hadn't fainted when the attack stopped. I saw a small sly smile on the Cryogonal, but it hadn't moved yet, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Infernape's eyes immediately snapped back open. Slack Off was completed, and his health was now fully replenished. Now, Infernape had the benefit of maximum health as well as a Substitute. Despite Infernape's lacking defensive stats, his movepool and Speed made it possible for him to last a long while in battles.

Infernape moved on to Flamethrower. He took a deep breath in, and launched a large stream of flames at Cryogonal. Maybe I was only imagining it, but it seemed to me as though Infernape had made the Flamethrower a little bit smaller and a little hotter. If Infernape was doing that intentionally, it was probably to increase the chances of a burn. Hopefully I would get it, but I wasn't feeling particularly faithful in the odds.

The Flamethrower surged through Cryogonal's two Reflects. I smiled. Reflect was a barrier that weakened Physical moves. Special moves like Flamethrower would find no problem with the Reflects, regardless of how many there were. Not only that, but Cryogonal had a natural weakness to Flamethrower. Despite the impressive Special Defense stat I knew Cryogonal had, the Pokemon would not be particularly happy with taking a strong hit like my Infernape's Flamethrower.

The flames overwhelmed Cryogonal. I looked at it closely to see if it was burned. However, while Flamethrower seemed to have done a lot of damage, Cryogonal only seemed hurt. There was no evident burn mark on its body. I sighed. It was a shame, but the odds of a burn was simply too low for a good chance. It seemed as though trying for a status ailment would be nothing more than wishful thinking with Infernape.

Cryogonal smiled at me craftily. I wasn't sure what it was thinking, or why it had smiled. It had just taken a direct hit from Flamethrower, so from my perspective it had no reason to be smiling. It was a little worrying that Cryogonal had something to smile about, but there was nothing for me to do about it other than continue pressing forward.

"Infernape, Cryogonal may have something in mind! Don't give it any opportunity to do whatever it may be planning!" I shouted to my Pokemon. "Use Mach Punch, and then Fury Swipes!"

Neither of these moves were particularly powerful moves, especially with multiple Reflects in play. However, I figured that with the speedy nature of Mach Punch combined with the multiple hits of Fury Swipes, Cryogonal should be kept busy for a while and be backed into a corner. I didn't know what its plan was (or if it even had one for that matter), but being backed into a corner was never good and tended to limit one's options. Hopefully, this would work nicely.

Infernape pulled back a fist, and zoomed towards Cryogonal. I saw his fist reach through the Reflects to try and connect with Cryogonal. Though two Reflects would definitely take away a lot of its damage, I figured that at least Mach Punch was being backed by Iron Fist and a type advantage. Neither of those helped much for the Fury Swipes later on, but at least Fury Swipes would accomplish a task in keeping Cryogonal busy.

"Infernape, Cryogonal may have something in mind! Don't give it any opportunity to do whatever it may be planning!" John shouted to Infernape. "Use Mach Punch, and then Fury Swipes!" I looked over towards Cryogonal. The last of the flames were now leaving its body. It still had that same sneaky smile on, it was a bit creepy. I looked a little closer and then my jaw dropped, metaphorically speaking. I saw Cryogonal melting away into the snow. I wasn't totally sure what was happening. It took all but five seconds for it to melt into the ground.

I looked around the area, trying to find the Cryogonal, I knew John was doing the same. I then saw a clump of snow appear behind Infernape. It was so obvious, just like in the scary movies I had seen with Rex. The bad guy is always behind you, or in this case, the wild Pokemon. Cryogonal quickly materialized behind the fire monkey. Cryogonal began spinning rapidly. With the pointed edges of the snowflake, Cryogonal looked just like a saw blade. It slashed hard into the back of the Infernape.

What the Cryogonal forgot though, was that that was the substitute, not the real Infernape. Infernape came out of no where and punched Cryogonal square in the face with a fast and powerful blow. He then went into a fury rage and began swiping at the Ice type Pokemon. It went on for a while as he clawed his way at the snowflake, almost as if he were ice sculpting.

Cryogonal finally broke free, and immediatly let out a small breath of ice that froze Infernape's body. The attack seemed to do more than I had though it would. Then I remembered that this particular attack was one that always did a critical hit. I knew Infernape could get unfrozen in a heartbeat, but this was Cryogonals small chance to catch its breath.

As Infernape zipped closer and closer to Cryogonal, Cryogonal's grin grew wider and wider. This worried me - despite being in a supposedly problematic situation, Cryogonal had something to grin about. Still, there was nothing to do about it since I didn't know what it had in mind. My only option was to keep pressing forward and hope that Infernape could keep Cryogonal's hands full.

Infernape tossed his Mach Punch at Cryogonal. The Pokemon's grin broadened even more. Mach Punch missed, going right over Cryogonal. I gasped. This was odd. I could tell Infernape had thrown his punch straight and into Cryogonal, and yet somehow, Cryogonal was underneath Infernape's fist.

Then, I realized what was going on. Somehow, Cryogonal was melting into the snow! Its snowflake form faded away and mixed into the snow, and I frowned. I recognized this attack as the concealing Acid Armor. Cryogonal could reappear anywhere.

"Infernape, Cryogonal is using Acid Armor!" I called. "Keep your eyes open for it!"

Infernape nodded, and began turning slowly on the spot. His eyes were darting - he was looking for Cryogonal. I followed suit. It was impertinent that I did not allow Cryogonal to claim the momentum. It was always frustrating to deal with a stalling Pokemon that had the upper hand.

"Infernape, it's behind you!" I hollered, my eyes catching Cryogonal emerging from the snow behind Infernape. Infernape immediately turned, but it was too late. Cryogonal begun spinning rapidly, the sharp edges of its form cutting into the air. Cryogonal ripped into Infernape with the Slash, but I smiled. Fortunately, that was only Infernape's Substitute. The pseudo-Infernape disappeared in a poof of smoke. My Infernape, using this distraction to its advantage, leaped out of the smoke and landed its Mach Punch on Cryogonal.

"Infernape!" my Pokemon screeched. He continued his onslaught with Fury Swipes, and begun clawing at Cryogonal wildly. Cryogonal growled in annoyance, and threw off Infernape after a few swipes. Infernape landed hard in the snow, at Cryogonal eyed him maliciously.

Cryogonal opened its mouth and took a deep breath in, clearly preparing an attack. It blew out a misty breath. This was the Frost Breath attack, I recalled. Infernape cringed in pain as the Frost Breath enveloped it. I frowned. That was odd. From what I recalled, Frost Breath was a generally weak Ice-type attack. Infernape, despite his frailty, should only take minimal damage due to having a natural type resistance to Ice-type attacks. Then, I remembered Frost Breath's side effect. Frost Breath was an attack that always landed a critical hit. I frowned. Despite Cryogonal's sub-par offensive stats, having a move that was always going to be a surefire critical hit would help to even things out some.

"Alright, Infernape, we're going to have to bounce back quickly!" I called. I noticed Infernape's body was frozen from the Frost Breath. This wasn't the same as being truly frozen, as would be the case if Infernape had been frozen by an attack like Ice Beam or Blizzard. This was only a temporary situation that Infernape should be able to work his way out of very quickly. Cryogonal only had a little bit of spare time, and in all honesty, Infernape could get off attacks even with his body frozen.

I made up my mind, and shouted, "Infernape, let's use Fire Spin! After that, use Brick Break!"

My strategy here was a simple one. Fire Spin was an attack that Infernape should have no problems getting off even with half of his body frozen. Furthermore, Fire Spin should be able to trap Cryogonal temporarily and keep it busy. That would allow Infernape enough time to work his way out of the ice and land a Brick Break on Cryogonal. Brick Break would also smash the two Reflects, which would give me a few more options to run with should I need them.

However, I knew that both moves combined would not do a whole lot of damage, even with type advantages working in their favor. Fire Spin was, in general, a weak move, and with its high Special Defense stat, Cryogonal should be able to take it without a hitch. Brick Break, despite being a stronger move, would also have its damage reduced a little bit. Brick Break would take down Cryogonal's Reflects, but with Cryogonal's Defense stat being raised by Acid Armor, Cryogonal should still able to take a hit like Brick Break just fine. Still, I thought it would be helpful to remove Cryogonal's Reflects for later.

Infernape reared his head back, and opened his jaw. A small tornado of flames formed above his open mouth. With some momentum, Infernape tossed the Fire Spin at Cryogonal. As Fire Spin flew towards its target, it began to grow in size. Very quickly, it was big enough for Cryogonal to fit inside of it. Indeed, that was how the attack worked. Cryogonal would be trapped within the Fire Spin, and be unable to move as the sweltering flames heated his body up. I smiled. Things should work out just fine.

"Alright, Infernape, we're going to have to bounce back quickly!" John called out to his fire monkey. "Infernape, let's use Fire Spin! After that, use Brick Break!" The combo itself was quite impressive, yet expected. Everyone knew that Fire type Pokemon could easily get out from being frozen in a heartbeat. However, by using Fire Spin, he could temporarily trap it. Then after, he'd break the Reflect barrier Cryogonal had set up and do damage with Brick Break. I didn't see any downside to this plan.

Infernape had already begun to use Fire Spin. I could tell because of how fast the ice that he was encased in was melting. It was going to be but a matter of seconds before he was free from that entrapment.

Cryongonal wasn't going to stay still though. While it was catching its breath, the Crystallizing Pokémon began glowing different shades of blue. It started with a sky blue, and ended in a Navy color. I wasn't sure what had happened until I saw the sky darken and small pieces of hail began to fall. It had just summoned Hail from the above. Vortex moved in between John and his Dragonite and I and created a psychic barrier above us to protect us from the hail.

My eyes were fixated on Cryogonal, I was interested in seeing what it was going to do next. I was torn away from the Pokemon though when a large spiral of flames engulfed the Ice type Pokemon. I looked over towards Infernape, who was now free from being frozen.

He wasn't done yet though, Infernape drew his arm back as he charged at Cryogoanl. The Fire types fist was glowing a bright white. He brought it down towards the Crystallizing Pokémon, and as he did, the sound of glass cracking could be heard. At first I thought it was the Cryogonal, but then I remembered Reflect. Those were gone now. The force from Brick Break sent Cryogonal flying back into a nearby rock. The Ice type was hurt badly, but it had great endurance because it got back up and began its next attack.

Cryogonal opened its mouth and created a small blue ball of energy. It was the start of Blizzard, and while it was hailing meant that it would not miss.

Infernape's Fire Spin slammed into Cryogonal and ensnared the Pokemon. I smiled approvingly, and watched Infernape fidget his way out of the ice trap. He quickly freed himself, and glared at Cryogonal.

The Cryogonal seemed to be glowing blue. I frowned. This could be a problem, depending on what was going on.

The sky above us got darker. This move seemed to be a weather move. My suspicions were confirmed when hail began falling from the sky. Vortex immediately stepped closer to me and Dragonite, and created a psychic barrier above us which sheltered us from the falling hail.

Infernape, however, wasn't safe from the hail. I could see the hail doing visible damage to it. I frowned. Infernape couldn't last a long time out there. I had to make sure to do what I could to end this quickly.

Meanwhile, Infernape was flying at Cryogonal, his fist outstretched. He was using Brick Break. His fist smashed through the Reflects, shattering them. That was a side effect of Brick Break - moves like Reflect and Light Screen were demolished by the attack. Infernape kept going, punching Cryogonal.

    "Great job, Infernape!" I called.

Cryogonal wasn't quick to concede momentum to us, however. It quickly returned to a vertical base, and gathered itself for an attack. A ball of ball energy from in its mouth. I recognized this as Blizzard. The powerful move had perfect accuracy in hail. I had to do something quickly.

"Infernape, use Protect!" I commanded. I didn't have any reliable options to counter a powerful like Blizzard, so I would have to parry it. Protect was a handy little desperation move that would do the trick.

A blue wall of energy suddenly rose around Infernape with a fwoosh sound. That should protect it from Blizzard.

"After Blizzard subsides, use Torment!" I called. The odds of Cryogonal using Blizzard again was admittedly poor, but I didn't want to risk it. Protect was a perfectly fine option right now, but if it was used consecutively, its success rate would dip to 50%. With Torment, Cryogonal would be unable to use Blizzard twice in a row, which would give me time to operate with.
