"Infernape, use Protect!" John called out. I would have countered with Flamethrower, assuming I knew that move. Blizzard was a move that was pretty risky to use because it had a good chance of missing. However, it is said that Blizzard was a move that didn't miss in hail, and could sometimes even go through a Protect. I wasn't sure how true that was, but we were sure about to find out.

Cryogonal finally released the Blizzard attack, sending small white sharp pelts of freezing cold snow towards the fire monkey who immediately protected itself with a small forcefield. I watched carefully to see if Blizzard was going to penetrate the shield. I let out a sigh of relief as the attack was halted by Protect and Infernape remained unharmed. I knew Cryogonal had learned from this though and would probably make it or go through next time.

John, however, was prepared for that. He had Infernape use Torment, a move that made the opponet unable to use the same move twice in a roll. The Fire type Pokemon stomped his foot hard into the snow and began yelling angrily at Cryogonal. I saw a dark glow come from the Snowflake Pokemon, which meant that the torment worked.

Cryogonal opened its mouth, and a thick, black fog of smoke came out. The smoke quickly covered the area, making it really hard to see what was going on. This move was known as Haze. The effects of Haze were quite useful... well at least they would be had Cryogonal had no rise in stats. I wasn't sure why the Ice type used that, leaving it more vulnerable to physical attacks, but it did. Perhaps to make it harder for Infernape to see.

Next thing I saw, were several small brown orbs hitting Infernape. At least four of the nine orbs hit him. I knew this move was Hidden Power, and by the looks of it, it was a Ground type. Cryogonal didn't have much health or energy left, so I knew it was going to get back some health really soon.

Cryogonal released its Blizzard. It blew out dozens of darts of snow at Infernape, but they were all stopped cold by Infernape's Protect. Instead of hitting their target, the snow harmlessly crashed into the protective barrier and shattered like a snowball would.

Infernape began yelling at Cryogonal. This was Torment. A dark aura surrounded Cryogonal - this meant that Torment was working. Cryogonal was now prevented from using the same move twice in a row, preventing it from spamming Blizzard. Torment should keep Blizzard's usage to a minimum until Hail subsided (which would then make it much less of a threat).

Cryogonal sniffed, and blew out a dark gas. I knew this move. It was the typically dreaded Haze attack. In Free For Alls, Haze was usually a hell of a move to deal with, particularly when one had accumulated a lot of stat boosts already. In this situation, however, it was a head scratching decision by Cryogonal.

Haze would eliminate Infernape's Speed boost from Flame Charge, which was hardly a problem since Infernape would still possess a clear Speed advantage even without the boost, and Cryogonal's Defense boosts from Acid Armor. In some ways, I could see it being a genius move as with Cryogonal's health this low, I knew better than to exploit its weak Defense. However, I didn't expect Cryogonal to think that way. By eliminating its own Defense boosts, it was only putting itself in a situation where it would be closer to fainting.

I couldn't see anything in the dark haze. I waited nervously for it to subside. Now that Cryogonal had used Haze, it could use Blizzard again. If it did use Blizzard, the attack would definitely be able to hit Infernape - Blizzard never missed in hail. I considered having Infernape Protect again, just in case.

I heard Infernape cry out, and started panicking. Was I too late? Had Infernape already been struck by Cryogonal's Blizzard?

I saw faint traces of brown energy through the haze. They faded away quickly, but I knew what they were - my Infernape had the same attack. It was a Ground-typed Hidden Power. It was unfortunate for me that this Cryogonal had a Ground-type Hidden Power, as Ground-type attacks were super-effective on Pokemon like my Infernape. Still, Infernape didn't look particularly hurt.

I debated over which move to use next. Cryogonal was close to fainting, but capture wasn't an option quite yet. I suspected Cryogonal was going to use a healing move at some point, so I wanted to deal some damage. Not too much so that I won't knock out Cryogonal, but just enough to minimize the impact its recovery would have. I made up my mind.

"Infernape, let's use Shadow Claw!" I called. Shadow Claw was an attack with a moderate Base Power and was unaffected by STAB or type advantages. It was a very friendly attack to use in this case.

Infernape's claw began glowing with a dark energy. I saw a fierce look develop in his eyes, and he began rushing towards Cryogonal with his arm outstretched.

    "Infernape!" he cried.

"Infernape, let's use Shadow Claw!" He called. It wasn't a move that would be normally used, but since he was going for an attack that did regular, if not minimal damage, this was a pretty good choice.

However, before he got to make a move, a silver beam shot out of Cryogonal's mouth. It was a Steel type move known as Flash Cannon. This particular move wasn't very effective towards Fighting or Fire types. Infernape could easily resist this attack.

Infernape brushed passed the attack, which was pretty weak, given the state of the Ice type Pokemon, and slashed it hard with a shadowy claw. I could hear a faint cry come from the Crystallizing Pokémon. For a second there, I thought Infernape landed a critical hit and knocked out the Pokemon. I let out a sigh of relief when I saw Cryogonal still standing. There was no way this Pokemon was taking another hit without passing out. Anyone could tell that by just looking at this Pokemon. It was about to pass out.

With what little energy it had left, Cryogonal managed to seperate its body into five clones. He was using Double Team to try and by time for something. As soon as the clones were made, Cryogonal began glowing a bright bluish white color, all the clones were. He was beginning to heal himself.

As Infernape charged towards Cryogonal, Cryogonal launched a silver beam at my Pokemon. Judging from the brightness of the move, it must've been Flash Cannon - a Steel-type move. Infernape should have no problem fighting through it due to being part Fire-type.

Indeed, my Infernape ran straight through Flash Cannon, showing only the slightest indication that he had taken any damage whatsoever. He proceeded to hit home a Shadow Claw on Cryogonal.

"Cryogonal!" the Pokemon wailed, immediately recoiling in pain. It dipped a little in altitude, and I feared it was going to fall over, fainted. Thankfully, Cryogonal quickly picked itself back up. Cryogonal was clearly in a weakened state, however. I suspected one more hit would be enough to knock it out. Was it time for me to try at a capture? I still expected it to try and recover its health, but if I could snag the opportunity before it faded away...

Nope, I was too late. Cryogonal set up with a quick Double Team, with dopplegangers leaping out of the original's body. I lost track of the real Cryogonal, but now I was facing about five Cryogonals. Only one was the real one, but it was irrelevant. I remembered that when I went through Meteor Valley with Akinai as her Ranger, her Absol, Gaard, had used Double Team. If Cryogonal knew how to use Double Team to its advantage as well as Gaard had, it should know to keep the original concealed even when using moves or taking hits by having the copies pretend to use the moves or take the hits as well.

A bright blue glow was emitted from all five Cryogonals - my suspicions were correct. Though only the real Cryogonal was actually doing something, the others were mimicking it so as to keep that one hidden.

I shrugged. This was hardly a problem for me. Though Cryogonal had boosted its Evasion with Double Team and recovered some health with Recover, I could still deal with it just fine.

"Infernape, let's use a combination of Flame Wheel and Fire Spin!" I commanded.

Infernape nodded, and a cloak of fire surrounded his body. This was Flame Wheel. Flames would surround the user, and it would proceed to charge at the target with the flames rolling around him. It looked similar to a flaming Rollout, though the user itself wasn't actually rolling around within Flame Wheel.

The idea here was that with Infernape using Flame Wheel, he would be able to get close to the Cryogonals. Due to their slow Speed and the fact that they were all bunched together right now, Infernape should be able to get into the midst of them easily. As he did so, he would slam into all of the Cryogonals. If the original wasn't able to avoid it, it should take damage.

Fully independent of how Flame Wheel turned out, Fire Spin should be able to work to my advantage. Even if the Cryogonals dodged Infernape's attack, they should be within Fire Spin's range due to Infernape needing to get close to connect with Flame Wheel. Infernape had already used Fire Spin earlier in this battle, but he had launched it at Cryogonal to trap it.

This time, it would be different. Fire Spin would use the flames around Infernape's body from Flame Wheel, and those flames would transition from a rolling ball around Infernape to a tornado of flames that would expand in all directions. I expected this combination to do quite well and help reduce Recover's impact some.

"Infernape, let's use a combination of Flame Wheel and Fire Spin!" He called out after seeing Cryogonal's Double Team attack. The real Cryogonal was recovering among the three clones, but since they were all doing the same thing, it was really hard to know which was the real one and which were the fakes. With a Fire type like Infernape, it wasn't going to be hard to figure out which was which.

Flame Wheel was a move that engulfed the user in flames as they charged at their opponent. While they were moving towards their opponent, they looked ike on giant wheel of flames. Infernape took of at incredibly fast speed towards the Cryogonal groups.

Infernape slammed into tree of the Cryogonal, stopping the Ice type rom finishing its Recover. It managed to gain some health, but not enough like it should have. Infernape didn't stop there though, he quickly created a swarm of flames from his Flame Wheel attack and turn it into a small tornado. That attack would have been pretty dangerous to use on something like Crygonal at this point in battle.

When the attack had faded off, I saw that Cryogonal was still standing, surprisingly. The Ice type took off with some speed, but not as fast as Infernape. Cryogonal dove in hard at Infernape. The attack itself wasn't particularly strong, but it did do some damage. I knew this battle was just about over, John just needed to play it right.

With flames rolling furiously around his body, Infernape barrelled into the midst of the group of Cryogonals. He must have connected with the real one because the faint yellow light over the Cryogonals from Recover faded away instantly, indicating that Infernape had interrupted Recover.

"Well done!" I called to my Infernape encouragingly. Cryogonal had not managed to recover a lot of its health, and I was sure that Flame Wheel had been able to take away most of what it had recovered if not all of it.

Infernape moved on to Fire Spin. The flames around his body expanded into a large tornado of fire, and it swirled viciously, growing in size until it was big enough to all of the Cryogonals were trapped within the sweltering flames. All of them screamed in pain - that meant the real Cryogonal was hurting.

The Fire Spin died down, and Infernape returned to my side to regroup. The Cryogonals were still standing, impressively. I found it impossible to believe that Cryogonal had much more HP left, but I figured that it should be able to a little bit more damage before I tried for a capture.

I was about to command my next attack when Cryogonal used an attack of its own. The Cryogonals all began spinning towards Infernape, showing a combination of speed and grace. I couldn't help but notice that they seemed to resemble shruiken spinning towards Infernape. This attack must've been the elegant but powerful Acrobatics I had heard of. Acrobatics was a Flying-type attack that would be super-effective against Infernape. I hollered at Infernape to try and dodge, but he couldn't get away in time and the Cryogonals swooped in on him.

"Infernape!" he screeched. From the looks of things, he was sore all over. The Cryogonals spun back to their own side of the battlefield, grinning maliciously.

I frowned. "Alright Infernape, let's not let them think they have a chance at mounting a comeback. Use an Acrobatics of your own!"

Infernape nodded, and once again leapt into the midst of the Cryogonals. With Infernape, Acrobatics would look a little different than it had with Cryogonal. Infernape's Acrobatics revolved around his fluid hand-to-hand combat style, and Infernape would be leaping all over the place and tossing punches and kicks in a very dexterous motion.

Acrobatics was an intelligent move to use in this situation, or at least it was in my mind. Since it still wasn't clear which Cryogonal was the real one, Infernape would use his Acrobatics to swoop in and attack all of the Cryogonals until one of his strikes landed and he knew which Cryogonal to focus the rest of his strikes on. Acrobatics was a pretty powerful Physical move, but I figured that with many of the strikes likely to be wasted on clones, it should not do too much damage to Cryogonal. Ideally, Cryogonal would be right on the brink of or close to fainting. I had faith in my Infernape to understand not to faint the Cryogonal.

"Alright Infernape, let's not let them think they have a chance at mounting a comeback. Use an Acrobatics of your own!" John said, not looking too happy. I wouldn't blame him. Cryogonal was a handful. It was hard to battle this Pokemon without knocking it out, especially one that was weak to both Fire and Fighting. You had to weigh your moves carefully so that it could get weak enough and not by knocked unconscious. The park had a rule that stated that any Pokemon that was knocked out, could no longer be caught. I wasn't particularly sure why that was, but those were the rules.

Infernape launched off in a similar manner to how Cryogonal did moments ago. Luckily for him though, the Cryogonal on the left was the right one. The Ice type could no longer hold the other clone, which immediately disappeared. Cryogonal was sent flying back into one of the rocks on the field. The way it smacked into the rock sounded quite painful.

Infernape was looking quite exhausted now, but no where near as exhausted as Cryogonal looked. Now, or in the next passing minutes, looked like a perfect oppertunity to capture this Pokemon. Whether he was going to attack or attempt to capture it, this Pokemon wasn't out of energy yet though. It began creating another Blizzard attack. This one though, was forming slower than the last one.

OOC: I'm going to be going to Portland for a few days (leaving on Christmas morning). If I have time, I'll post while I'm there, but either way, I'll be coming back around the 28th. Just a heads up and Merry Christmas :)

Infernape took off, flying towards the Cryogonals with limbs ready to swing in all directions. Luck must've been on my side - as Infernape was flying towards the Cryogonals, the clone faded away. It seemed Cryogonal was too tired to keep its clone in play. That left Infernape with just one target. He would feast on Cryogonal.

Infernape swung an arm at Cryogonal. As that landed, he began twisting and launched into a wild yet graceful combination of various strikes and kicks. I could tell that as frenetic as the attack seemed, Infernape was holding back so he wouldn't knock out Cryogonal. He was dancing around Cryogonal and landing hits everywhere, but leaving Cryogonal dazed and overwhelmed wasn't necessarily the same as doing too much damage to it. I smiled - my Infernape, a master of close combat, knew that well.

Cryogonal tumbled away from Infernape, slamming into a rock. From the look of things, the Pokemon was almost done for. Finally, I had whittled the bulky Pokemon's health down enough for me to try my hand at a capture.

I debated for a moment, then I picked a Park Ball from my belt. Cryogonal wasn't a Stage 1 Pokemon, meaning a Park Ball would suffice, but I still felt a little reluctant about picking the Park Ball. The higher capture rate of a Super Ball opposed to a Park Ball would be helpful here. Cryogonal was a Pokemon that, even when weakened, would resist capture with all of its might. It was only due to the fact that Cryogonal seemed to be on the brink of fainting that I had settled on the Park Ball. Hopefully, it would be enough.

However, as I prepared to throw the Park Ball, I noticed that Cryogonal was trying to do something. It had its mouth open, and there was an orb of aqua-blue energy gathering in its jaw. Cryogonal had already tried using this attack earlier - it was Blizzard. However, its fatigue was evident in how slow the attack was being formed. Still, there would be no doubting its power regardless of how long it was taking to charge it.

I hesitated. What would be the smartest path to take here? If I threw the Park Ball, there was a chance it would get caught in Cryogonal's Blizzard and subsequently destroyed. Not only that, but Infernape would also be caught in the blast as the target. It was still hailing, and Infernape would not be able to dodge Blizzard. Even if I used Protect again, Blizzard could still pierce through - that was a testiment to its power in hail. I wasn't sure if I wanted to rely on Blizzard not breaking through Protect twice.

An idea popped into my mind. It was odd, but it had some merit to it. There were no guarantees that it would work, but given Infernape's proficiency at using the move, it could work.

"Infernape, I'm going to let Cryogonal launch its Blizzard at you. I want you to use Fire Spin and spin on the spot, okay?" I called to my Infernape. He hesitated for a moment, then he nodded as he realized what I wanted to do.

My plan here was to have Infernape take Cryogonal's Blizzard. Hopefully, by using Fire Spin as a defensive move, it would be able to deflect Cryogonal's Blizzard. It was true that Blizzard was a move to be feared in hail, but the fact remained that Fire had a natural type advantage over Ice. Not only that, but my Infernape was one of the strongest Fire-types around. Infernape's base Special Attack stat of 104 was very nice, and he had 18 battles of experience with me in addition to three Free-for-Alls and two Contests.

Infernape began to spin on the spot, gathering a cloak of flames around himself. The flames formed into a tornado once again. This was the third time I had used Fire Spin in this battle. I smiled - each time I had used Fire Spin, I had used it in a different way. The first time, it had been an attack thrown at Cryogonal. The second time, it was used as an attack launched in all directions from the midst of the enemy.

This time, it would be utilized in a completely different capacity as a defensive move. Cryogonal would not take any damage from Fire Spin this time - Infernape was simply using Fire Spin to create a powerful tornado of flames to block Blizzard. I wondered if Vortex and Colossus, both powerful Pokemon in their own right, would appreciate my creativity with Fire Spin, which was generally a weak move.

I held my arm, ready to throw the Park Ball. The moment Blizzard abided, I planned to throw it and capture Cryogonal.

"Infernape, I'm going to let Cryogonal launch its Blizzard at you. I want you to use Fire Spin and spin on the spot, okay?" John called out to his Infernape. He seemed a bit hesitant, but then appeared to be certain that was what he wanted to do.

Cryogonal, with what energy it had left, launched the Blizzard attack. Many pelts of ice and snow shot out of its mouth and headed straight for Infernape. The Fire Monkey acted fast and created another vortex of fire around his body. I could see the snow and ice from Blizzard, and the one surrounding the area melt away.

As soon as Cryogonal halted its attack to catch its breath, John heaved his Parkball towards the Ice type. A Parkball was the weakest Pokeball in this park area and wasn't normally used. However, given the current state of the Cryogonal, I had a good feeling this would work.

The ball soared through the air and hit the tip of the top of the snowflake. A red light shot out and sucked in the Pokemon. The sphere fell into the snow and shook lightly twice before remaining motionless in the ground.

"Well, that was a good battle." Vortex said. "Congrats. Colossus says whenever you're ready we can head on. Take your time."

As Infernape began spinning, Cryogonal launched its Blizzard at the ape. The powerful Ice-type attack slammed into my Pokemon, but just as I expected, was melted by the powerful flames of Fire Spin. I smiled, satisfied with the end result.

Cryogonal paused to catch its breath. This was my opportunity - I wasted no time in throwing the Park Ball in my fist at the Pokemon. It was quickly sucked into the ball, and the capsule began shaking.

After three shakes, it dinged. I smiled, relieved to see that even with just the standard Park Ball, things worked out just fine.

"Well, that was a good battle," Vortex said to me approvingly. "Congrats. Colossus says whenever you're ready we can head on. Take your time."

I nodded. Meanwhile, my Infernape picked up Cryogonal's Park Ball and handed it to me. I claimed the Park Ball containing Cryogonal from my Pokemon, then patted my Pokemon's back affectionately before returning him to his own Pokeball for a well deserved rest.

"I'm ready, let's move on," I said to Vortex.

"I'm ready, let's move on," John said to us. I nodded. He was still looking for Fighting type Pokemon, so we were going to have to keep heading up this mountain. The higher we go the better chance of finding a rare Pokemon he had. We went up at least a quarter of the way before I motioned for the group to stop. I stopped and listened.

I could hear a faint humming sound over the cold winds. Then I heard a loud shriek. I could tell it was a Pokemon in distress, so I quickly waved to group to follow me. We made our way towards where the sounds were originating from. I quickly scanned the area. My eyes stopped when I saw a small tree that was knocked over by a large rock. A small white headed, blue-bodied Pokemon was levitating over the rock, trying to push it off with its Psychic powers.

As I looked closer I saw that the tree was actually a Snover. As park Rangers, we weren't allowed to mess with nature, and that invovled helping them. I personally thought that rule was incredibly stupid and if John wasn't going to help them then I sure was going to. I looked over towards Vortex and nodded.

"The Snover needs help, can you lend it a hand?" Vortex asked. "If you want to battle it you will need to help it first."

Vortex and Colossus continued to lead me up the mountain. They were taking me up higher up, knowing that I was seeking out Fighting-types. With that said, I was a little doubtful as to why the Fighting-types would be farther up. Then again, maybe they preferred the colder weather. It was probably more isolated and tougher higher up the mountain, so I could see the Fighting-types preferring it there. I shrugged - I was not much of an environmentalist, despite being a Ranger. Not that it was particularly relevant in this case, however.

I followed my Pokemon Rangers as they led me up the mountain. We made good progress before our next encounter - or encounters, I should say.

After traversing the isolated mountain for quite some time, our party happened upon a pair of distressed Pokemon. One was a Meditate. The baby-like Fighting Pokemon was exerting its Psychic powers, trying to lift a fallen tree. Said tree was collapsed over the second Pokemon, a Snover.

"The Snover needs help, can you lend it a hand?" Vortex asked me. "If you want to battle it, you will need to help it first."

I nodded. While I had no interest in Meditite whatsoever, Snover was an interesting Pokemon to go for. I wasn't much of an Ice-type user (and by extension, not much of a Hail user), but it was true that I had acquired a few Ice-types recently and I had looked into the idea of trying my hand at using some Hail-based teams. Adding an auto-Hail inducer would be beneficial if I did decide to expand my horizons, and if nothing else, it would fill out my collection and give me the full set of weather-inducing abilities. I already had Sandstream from my Tyranitar, Drizzle from Politoed, and Drought from Ninetales - all I needed was Snow Warning.

I made up my mind - I would capture Snover. If I ended up capturing over three Pokemon in this run, it wasn't a big deal to me to drop Snover. First, however, I would have to free it.

"Infernape, you're up!" I called, tossing Infernape's Pokeball. "Use Strength to free Snover!"

Infernape wasted no time, leaping out of his Pokeball. He jumped over to the tree and put his hands underneath the trunk.

"Infernape!" he shrieked, lifting the trunk off of Snover.

I knew this would be a double battle, so I threw Dragonite's Pokeball as well. "You're also going to be needed, Dragonite!"

My Dragonite exploded out of her Pokeball in similar fashion to Infernape. "Okay, let's not waste any time! Infernape, use Fake Out on Snover! Dragonite, use Wing Attack on Meditite!"

The idea here was to get myself off the best start possible. Fake Out was a given here, and it would prevent Snover from getting off an Ice-type attack that would be ultra-effective on Dragonite. Meanwhile, Dragonite would use the opening to attack Meditite with a super-effective Flying-type attack. I would have preferred to do more damage and speed up the process of eliminating Meditite from the battle, but Hurricane (which was two times as powerful as Wing Attack) had only 50% accuracy in any weather outside of rain. Given that the area was hailing right now, I knew better than to use Hurricane.

Infernape reached over, making to strike Snover with a preemptive blow. Meanwhile, Dragonite jetted towards Meditite, her right wing outstretched and aimed straight towards Meditite's chest.

I was sitting in the Ranger front office doing nothing when my phone rang. I picked it up and found that Ranger Vortex was on the other end of the line.

“Hey, you feel like taking over my run? I have pressing business I need to get to.”

I checked my calendar on my phone to make sure I had no other appointments before responding. “Sure, I’ll teleport there.”

When he hung up, I walked the short distance to my sparsely decorated office and retrieved my rangering equipment plus my Pokemon. I knew Vortex had taken his trainer to Oktori, a place known for its Fighting and Ice types. I chose to take Alakazam and Infernape along, both could handle each of those types easily enough without too much hassle.

I called Alakazam and hid him teleport us to the frigid mountain of Oktori. In the twinkle of an eye, the warm conditions of the Ranger office vanished to be replaced by the snow and hail of the unforgiving mountain.

I arrived just in time to John’s Infernape heave a rock off a Snover. I looked around for Vortex and acknowledged him when I caught sight of him. He returned a nod and vanished to wherever he had to go.

Since this was a double battle John threw out a second Pokeball. "You're also going to be needed, Dragonite!" Dragonite appeared right next to its partner Infernape. "Okay, let's not waste any time! Infernape, use Fake Out on Snover! Dragonite, use Wing Attack on Meditite!"

Smart move by John. Based on the move choices it was obvious he wanted to catch the Snover, but get rid of Meditate.

Infernape reacted first, moving faster than normal, the Pokemon raced towards the still dizzy form of Snover and smacked it upside its head. Dragonite also moved forward, his wings glowing white as he prepared to use Wing Attack on Meditate. But Just before Dragonite could hit the Pokemon, Meditate leaped out of the way, inches coming between it and Dragonite.

All the Pokemon returned to their previous postitions and tried to stare down one another as the hail beat down upon the mountain. This was going to be a tough fight, I could tell.

@AmericanTreeFrog Starting this up again, if that's fine by you.

Infernape smacked Snover, staggering the Pokemon backwards a little. I smiled - Fake Out had worked perfectly. This put Snover out of the equation temporarily, allowing me to shift my focus to Meditite for a quick moment.

Dragonite flew towards Meditite, her wing outstretched and ready to slam into its target.

    "Dragonite!" my Pokemon bellowed.

However, just as Dragonite was about to collide with Meditite, the Pokemon nimbly sprung itself away from Dragonite's wing. I noticed a faint glimmer in its eyes, and identified this maneuver as Detect. It was a move that heightened the user's agility, allowing it to slip away from essentially every incoming attack.

I frowned at this turn of events. Flinching Snover with Fake Out was supposed to have, in theory, allowed me to concentrate my efforts on Meditite so that I could get a head start of eliminating it from the battle. However, as Snover regained its form and the Pokemon returned to their respective sides of the battlefield, it was clear to me that that hadn't worked out as planned.

I sighed. Oh well. I studied my Pokemon, trying to get an idea of how much HP they had left. Dragonite seemed fine, having just made her debut in this run. However, Infernape seemed much more exhausted. The hail damage was really starting to add up, and he had also taken plenty of damage from the past battle with Cryogonal. I frowned.

Looking at Snover, I decided that this wasn't worth it. My interest in the Pokemon was diminishing quickly. I had initially wanted to capture it to add an auto-Hail inducer to my lineup, but I figured at this point it was no longer worth the hassle. Now, if only it would let us escape without a hitch...

I looked over to my new Ranger. "Can we try escaping from these Pokemon? I think my own Pokemon could use a breather and some time to recollect themselves..." Mulling things over a bit, I figured it would benefit to have a backup plan in case the Snover and Meditite didn't allow us an easy escape. "Dragonite, if the Pokemon try and follow us, use a Hurricane attack! Infernape, you use Protect to avoid being struck by Dragonite's attack, alright?"

My Pokemon nodded their heads in acknowledgement. I bit my lip, hoping things worked out alright. If it didn't, we'd be in a pretty bad situation with our opponents pursuing us. My plan was that if the Pokemon followed us, Dragonite's Hurricane attack would add an element of chaos to things. Hurricane had only a 50% chance of hitting in any non-Rain weather, but regardless of whether or not it struck Meditite and Snover head-on, it would make things a bit more chaotic, which could work in my favor if I stayed diligent.

John looked at me, his face troubled by the way the battle was going. “Can we try escaping from these Pokemon? I think my own Pokemon could use a breather and some to recollect themselves.”

“No problem. Let’s try and use this weather to our advantage and run. Just follow me.” With the wild Pokemon freed and John wanting to get away, I had no problem steering us away from the two wild Pokemon.

The snow crunched under our boots as we fled from the battle scene. We hadn’t gone far when I wagered a look back. Both Pokemon were no longer in sight, they must have decided to leave us along and go their separate ways.

I stopped running and looked at the client. “We can take the rest now...” my voice trailed off as I looked past John. A shadow had materialized from the hail. He was a purple and cream colored Pokemon that resembled a distant cousin of a mink or weasal. It looked at us and snarled a challenge.

"No problem. Let’s try and use this weather to our advantage and run. Just follow me," Gaius said.

I nodded, and followed my Ranger as he led the way. We began to flee from the battlefield, running through the snow and the hail. I glanced behind me. Infernape and Dragonite were both following me, though they were backtracking so they could they keep an eye on the enemy. To my relief, it seemed neither Meditite nor Snover was interested in pursuing us.

A few moments later, Gaius stopped. I halted behind him, and my Pokemon quickly caught up to us. The Meditite and Snover were no longer in view, hidden by the blizzard.

"We can take the rest now..." Gaius trailed off just as I returned my Pokemon to their Pokeballs. I looked up at him, but he was looking behind me. I immediately turned to see what he was looking at.

"Mienshao!" the Pokemon cried. He resembled a stoat, albeit one colored a very elegant light purple. The Mienshao had a very slender build, with long arm fur delicately hanging from his arms. I knew that those were used by the Pokemon in combat in similar fashion to battle whips.

I smiled. I had been hoping to encounter one of these. Mienshao were very useful Pokemon in battle. One of the main reasons was because they had access to the Regenerator ability - an ability that allowed the user to regenerate a third of its health every time it was switched out of battle. I would definitely battle it.

"Let's battle this Pokemon," I said to Gaius. I looked at the two Pokeballs in my hand. Dragonite seemed like the obvious choice here, as Infernape was still a little low on health and Dragonite had a type advantage on Mienshao. However, I had something in mind that should make Infernape the better Pokemon to lead off with here.

"Let's go, Infernape!" I yelled, tossing Infernape's Pokeball. The ape exploded into view and screeched loudly. It seemed that even though he was low on health, he was still as boisterous as ever. He looked at me for instructions, and I could tell from the look in his eyes that he knew what my plan was. Given the situation and my tendencies, it was probably obvious to him.

    "Do it," I called.

Infernape nodded and suddenly disappeared, kicking up some of the snow as he raced towards Mienshao. I smiled. As always, we would be leading off with a Fake Out. When it was one of the available options at the beginning of a battle, Fake Out was almost always the move I went with. In the National Park, there was no reason whatsoever not to use Fake Out. I watched as Infernape raced towards his target, ready to strike.

Next up should be the Slack Off move. With Mienshao flinched, Infernape would know that I would call for this opportunity to regain some health. The hail would chip away at the recovered health and Mienshao would have an opportunity to land an attack after I used Slack Off, but I was fully expecting Infernape to regain a nice amount of HP nonetheless.

“Let’s battle this Pokemon,” John said, excitement creeping into his voice.

This must have been one of the Pokemon he was hoping to find. Mienshao wasn’t a bad Fighting Pokemon to have for a couple of reasons. One of the first being the rare Regenerator ability, one that healed a third of a Pokemon’s health once it switched out, a move that could surprise an opponent. It also had high attack and speed, with a decent special attack stat. The only problem with this Pokemon was that its defense and special defense were woefully low, something that could be easily exploited by another powerful Pokemon. However, it’s benefits easily outweighed the cons of the Pokemon.

John reached to his belt and groped for a Pokeball. He gave it a quick once over before tossing it out onto the battlefield. “Let’s go Infernape!” The Infernape looked back at its master and gave a slight tilt to its head, an unspoken question. John must’ve understood because he said, “Do it.”

Infernape nodded and shot off at top speed towards the Mienfoo, in what I figured to be a Fake Out attack, a common first move by Pokemon who knew it. But in this case it was a risky move. John must have forgotten that Mienshao might have the ability Inner Focus, an ability that prevented flinching. If he did, Infernape would be in a world of hurt.

Luckily for John’s Pokemon, the Mienfoo didn’t know the move because it allowed the other Pokemon to hit it with Fake Out, and follow that up with Slack Off, a move that healed health. Mienshao shook of the effects of the Fake Out and glanced up at the sky, the hail still coming down hard.

The Mienshao immediately started a slow dance, one that resembled the Tai-Chi form. It finished approximately the same time Infernape finished healing; and when the Fighting Pokemon did stop, the hail clouds had disappeared to be replaced by a bright sunny sky. Mienshao didn’t like the hail it seemed.

Infernape zoomed towards Mienshao, and reappeared at his side ready to strike. A fist was drawn, and Infernape snarled at Mienshao.

"Infernape," he growled, and snap-jabbed Mienshao.

Mienshao stumbled backwards, clearly staggered. I recalled that Mienshao was a species that had access to the Inner Focus ability, but it seemed that that was not the case - fortunate for me since Infernape would be a sitting duck right now if Mienshao were not flinched.

Infernape leapt backwards to create some space, and then closed his eyes. He took on a tranquil expression - he now using Slack Off to regenerate health, just as I had known he would. I smiled. The chemistry I had with my Pokemon always put a smile to my face.

Mienshao shook his head - it looked like he was returning to his senses. I leaned forward, a little anxious to see what his first attack would be. To my surprise, Mienshao gazed upwards and began dancing. The hail faltered, and the clouds parted to allow the blazing rays of the sun through. Mienshao had used Sunny Day, then.

I smiled. This was wonderful. Infernape was avoiding a lot of damage this turn - I had been expecting Mienshao to attack Infernape and whittle away at his recovered health. Instead, he did me a huge favor in using a non-damaging attack as well as lifting the hail simultaneously. The sunny weather that Mienshao had brought in to replace the hail was also a benefit to my Fire-type Infernape. His Fire-type attacks would be much stronger under this weather.

However, this made me pause. The sunny weather made Infernape a much more threatening opponent for Mienshao. My original plan was to swap Infernape out and bring out Dragonite with U-turn, who had a type advantage and was also bulkier than Infernape, meaning he would take the hail damage better. However, with the hail replaced by the sun, Infernape looked like a much better option than Dragonite for the moment. I didn't completely eliminate the idea of switching in Dragonite later, however.

Suddenly, I got an idea. It seemed borderline unfair, but that didn't stop me from wanting to cash it in.

"Infernape, use Encore!" I commanded. We had employed the same strategy with Cryogonal in our battle earlier, though that felt like it had occured an year ago. Cryogonal had used Reflect, and I locked him into that move for a short while with Encore. It had worked well last time, and it should work even better this time with Mienshao locked into Sunny Day. At the very least, it would extend the length of the battle a bit. That would work in my favor, as I had two Pokemon, both capable of regenerating their own health with moves.

Infernape put on a look of awe, aiming to feed Mienshao's ego. Mienshao struck me as a pretty mentally strong Pokemon, but never had a Pokemon been able to overcome my Infernape's Encore.

"Follow up with Fire Spin after Encore, Infernape!" I called. Fire Spin was one of my favorite attacks to use early in Park battles. Not only was it aesthetically pleasing (I mean, who doesn't find a tornado of flames appealing?), but it was an attack that wasn't too strong but also did residual damage while restricting the opponent's movement. That meant it wouldn't knock out its target, but it would weaken it over time while also keeping it in place and making it an easy target. It was a spectacular set-up move. With the sunny weather in play, the damage would be amplified, meaning it would whittle down Mienshao's health at a quicker rate.

As the Mienshao used the Sunny Day a sly smile crossed John’s face. I recognized that look as one a predator flashes a pray before it attacks.

“Infernape, use Encore! Follow up with Fire Spin after Encore, Infernape,” John commanded his Pokemon.

That poor Mienshao. While it disliked the hail intently, it had opened itself up to a double hit. Not only would the sun boost the Fire attacks of Infernape, it provide Infernape with a move it could Encore. Encore was a subtle move that was often overlooked. It allowed the user Pokemon to make the opposing Pokemon repeat a move for three turns. It essentially allowed the user Pokemon at least one free move to do whatever a lot. One Encore could change the course of a battle fairly easily.

Infernape looked over a Mienshao and began to clap enthusiastically, infusing his will into the move, making it more potent. Some Pokemon could resist the move, but most couldn’t. Mienshao couldn’t resist and started to initiate another Sunny Day move, his dance starting up again.

Infernape watched as Mienfoo began to Sunny Day once more before using his next move. He inhaled a large amount of hail, puffing his skinny chest up, and breathed out a large stream of flame. The flame quickly grew until it formed into a small tornado of fire. The fire immediately engulfed the helpless Mienshao, dealing damage and trapping the Fighting Pokemon.

Mienshao almost purred, clearly satisfied by Infernape's Encore. He immediately resumed dancing, probably under the belief that Infernape was impressed by his technique. Infernape smiled impishly and stopped clapping, pleased to see his move had worked yet again.

"Great job!" I called, watching Mienshao as he used Sunny Day. This time, however, the move seemed to have no noticeable effect - the sun was already out. The sun might've gotten a little brighter, but nothing else really happened. I had bought myself some time with Encore - Mienshao would be stuck using Sunny Day for a few turns.

I nodded at Infernape for him to continue. My Pokemon took a deep breath in - he was preparing for Fire Spin now. His fiery breath lit up small embers in the air, and he inhaled them in all in one deep breath. Then, he spewed them out in the form of a stream of fire directed towards Mienshao. The flames snaked around Mienshao and spun into a spinning vortex around Mienshao.

"Mienshao!" he cried as the flames and the heat began to suffocate him. However, he was still dancing, locked in to the Sunny Day attack. Being trapped in Fire Spin while being unable to move around should only enhance Fire Spin's effect, however. Because Mienshao couldn't walk around while doing the Sunny Day dance, the heat and the flames would be even more overwhelming and suffocating.

"Alright, we have a bit of time to play with..." I muttered underneath my breath. I had a lot of different options right now and no clue which one to go with. Locking Mienshao into Sunny Day hadn't been a premeditated decision - I had simply decided to pull the trigger when the opportunity appeared. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do in this situation yet.

The smartest thing to do right now was probably to simply deal some damage. The sun wouldn't last forever, so while it was in play, I should probably capitalize and use it to my advantage by using a Fire-type attack. However, I didn't want to afflict Mienshao with a burn. I had already planned to inflict a different status condition, and I didn't want to deviate from that plan.

If I wasn't going to risk burning Mienshao, then that reduced my options quite a bit. My best remaining options were Flare Blitz, Flame Charge, and Flame Wheel. I instantly decided against using Flare Blitz - the recoil damage associated with that attack turned me off. That left me with Flame Charge and Flame Wheel. Flame Wheel was slightly stronger, although Flame Charge had the added bonus of increasing Infernape's Speed temporarily. Since I was planning to switch out Infernape later on, it became a pretty easy decision.

Infernape was still looking at me for an order, annoyance evident on his face as I made him wait longer and longer. I nodded at him and yelled, "Infernape, let's go with Flame Wheel!"

My Pokemon growled in acknowledgement, and jumped into the air. Flames erupted around his body, turning Infernape into a pseudo-fireball. Infernape hit the ground with a loud thud and began to roll forward towards Mienshao, accumulating velocity rapidly. Flame Wheel was basically a Fire-type Rollout, and while its Base Power wasn't too impressive under normal circumstances, it became a very reliable go-to move in the sun.

As Infernape neared Mienshao, the spinning flames around Mienshao began to part so that they wouldn't harm Infernape. I shuffled to the left and shifted my head so that I could watch Infernape attack Mienshao without the flames in the way of my view.
