Beginner RP: WalabyX [Sandy Beach]

Non-Battle Post 1:

Most mornings, especially this late in the year, the beach wasn't normally what you'd call a "destination". Cold, clammy, and cloudy, the oncoming winter didn't officially close off the beach, but it certainly wasn't anywhere you'd want to be most of the time. Today, though? Today, the sun was shining, there was a cool breeze stirring over the waves, but most importantly it was warm. Warm enough that Oliver Haralson felt like he could get away with just a light jacket over what he insisted was his National Park Personnel uniform. Readjusting his wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun out of his eyes, he pulled out his clipboard and thumbed through his notes one last time.

Let's see here... Walaby, age 20, just recently got his first two Pokémon... Huh, that's interesting. According to the listing, it said that Oliver's charge for the day was interested in a fishing trip for Magikarp. This wasn't necessarily out of the ordinary- a lot of trainers specifically searched out the park so they could catch a wild-born 'mon of a specific species- but to come all this way out to the Park just for a Magikarp? Maybe there's more to it than that. I'll bet it's supposed to be a team-practice thing for his current squad. Probably. Maybe? I'll ask him when I see him. Speaking of which... Oliver quickly turned to meet the figure coming over the dune behind him.

As the figure approaches the Ranger, he calls out.
"Hello there! My name's Walaby. Pleasure to meet you sir."
Walaby reaches out his hand to shake the Ranger's.
In his other hand, Walaby carries a very new looking fishing pole and a small box of tackle. He seems to be holding it slightly off balance, as if he isn't used to carrying this type of equipment. He is wearing large boots, a brown leather jacket, and an olive green sports-cap.
As Walaby approaches the Ranger, an excited looking Axew pokes its head out from behind his leg. It's wearing. . . a scarf? How odd.
Spinning happily around in circles behind them is a bright pink thing that might be a Flaaffy, although it's hard to tell with all the movement.

 

Non-Battle Post 2:

Oliver accepted the handshake easily and gladly, smiling along with the diminutive dragon below them. "And it's good to meet you too, Walaby! Great day for a fishing trip, eh? I've got the ranger boat docked about ten minutes' walk from here, and then it's just us and the open ocean. Sound good for you?" The Ranger knelt down to put a hand out to the little Axew. Further behind is what looked like either a Blissey or a Flaafy... and those weren't odds Oliver wanted to wager on. They'd have enough of a day ahead of them without trying to recover from static shocks.

"Let's see, anything else to get out of the way... oh, yeah. It's just about winter now... well, technically," he continued, gesturing to the cloudless sky overhead, "and we're not allowed to take the boat out too long. First thing you capture, or if none of your guys are fit to stay out longer, or we reach the end of operating hours for the boat, we'll have to turn around. That's fine by you, right?"

"Absolutely..." Walaby squints at the Ranger's name-tag. "...Oliver! That sounds perfect."
Walaby turns around to check on the progress of the dawdling pokemon, and upon seeing the spinning blur, releases an exasperated sigh, followed quickly by a barely audible chuckle.
"Ampere, if you keep that up, you'll make yourself sick before we even get on the boat. Come on over here, fuzzball."
The pink thing stumbles as it stops its rapid rotation and jumps in the air with a jubilant cry
"FLAAFFY!"
It's a Flaaffy after all. It rushes past Walaby and runs to give the Ranger a hug.
"AAH, wait, Ampere no! What did I say about hugging people? Remember what happened last time? That poor hot dog salesman couldn't move for a full twenty minutes! We don't want that happening to our friendly park guide, now do we?"
Ampere's shoulders slump as he backs away, grumbling under his breath.
The Axew turns to the Flaaffy and scolds him for being so inconsiderate. Ampere sticks his tongue out.
"You too Axel, behave yourself."
With both pokemon ready to embark, Walaby turns back to Oliver.
"Looks like we're all set! Lead the way."

 

Non-battle post 3:

Uh-oh. It looked like Oliver had a hugger on his hands. Not that there was anything wrong with that... normally. With an animal capable of carrying enough static in its fur to knock out a Wailord, on the other hand... Well, it's better than the alternative. And hey, the guy seems to have 'em on a solid leash! I think they'll do fine as long as they get some steam off soon... and we'll certainly get a good chance for that soon enough. In fact...

Rummaging around in his fanny pack, the Ranger grabbed hold of a ball with a net pattern on it, releasing its occupant into the sunlight. The Galvantula stretched its many legs, blinking off sleepiness as she took in her surroundings. "Leah, would you mind keeping these guys company while we head out?" Shuffling noncommittally, Oliver took that as the best he'd get out of the reserved arachnid and waved the squadron on.

As the group walked, Oliver attempted to strike up a conversation. "Trust me, it pays to have on hand someone who doesn't mind the voltage. And hey, congrats on your first time in the park! Most people that come by for beginner runs aren't a quarter as prepared as you are. So, tell me, how'd you end up with these two to start off? Axew in particular, that's not something you see every day! Is there a story behind how the three of you met? Take Leah here, she's a gift from another of the rang- AAHH! NO! Not the boat!"

The boat, marked plainly as Park Property, was moored securely to the dock... but had already picked up a passenger. Sitting right atop the back of the captain's seat was none other than a Wingull, sunning itself stretched out across the boat as if it couldn't have any more distaste for its rightful owners. "Shoot, this isn't good. Trust me, you don't want to have to clean Wingull spit off the side of a pontoon. If I try and chase it away myself, it might back off, or maybe that just might make it mad... and I can't legally use Leah to fight while I'm carrying out a run. Ugh... Well, hey. You're the guest. Your call how to deal with it."

Walaby spins his cap so the brim is facing backwards. A look of determination crosses his face.
"I will not have my first trip ruined by a rattata with wings! Looks like we're up boys! Ampere, start charging up. We may need you to jolt him if Axel can't scare it off. Axel, give it your best Scary Face and see if you can get the wingull to hightail it out of here."
Ampere uses Charge and begins to glow and hum. You can hear the static slowly building up in his fur.
Axel on the other hand, charges right up to the boat and uses Scary Face, making the most menacing face it can muster. Unfortunately, it's adorable scarf isn't doing much to aid in the cause.

 

Battle Post 1:

"Whoa! Slow down there, champ in the making!" Leah quickly began to nudge the crackling sheep back away from the boat, swiftly scuttling a half-circle to interpose herself between Ampere and the bird. The Wingull, for its part, upon seeing a worryingly fashion-conscious dragon charging at it, rapidly reconsidered its options and decided there were other, less fought-over sunbathing spots to be found elsewhere. Cawing loudly at Axel, it flapped up into the sky and flew out over the ocean.

"Everyone alright? Sorry about that one, that's on me for panicking..." Oliver sheepishly tried to explain himself as he set up the boat. "So, way it used to be, people could bring however many Pokémon in here. (Can you pass me that rope?) Easiest way to exploit that was to bring, like, twenty dudes in and just dogpile everything you could find. They put the kibosh on that one because A. it was terrorizing the wildlife and B. it was tearing up the Park itself. (Try this size life jacket for Axel.) Way it is now, you only can engage one-on-one unless it's a genuinely serious threat to loss of life or limb. Sorry I didn't tell you earlier."

"Okay. Everything's set up and ready now, just give me a few minutes while we head out. While we wait, you still owe me the story about how you met these guys, you know."

Walaby looks a bit embarrassed at his outburst. He slowly rotates his hat back round.
"Hehe, sorry about that, sir. I got a bit excited."
He pulls on a lifejacket of his own, pulling the cords nice and tight before checking the straps on the pokemons' vests.
"As for how we three met, well it's pretty simple actually. I grew up in the country on a wool farm. My parents raised Mareep and sold the wool in the tiny town nearby. They have a gorgeous little country house nestled in a valley just outside of a huge forest. The views there never got old. I grew up there, and it'll always be my home, but I always felt that the outside world was calling to me. So once I finished High School, I told my parents I wanted to set out on my own as a Pokemon Trainer. My father was a bit sad that I wouldn't be continuing on at the farm, but I think he understood my reasons for leaving. Before I left, my parents gave me a tiny little ball of energy disguised as a Mareep that I called Ampere. He became my first Pokemon. Axel came along shortly after that when I went to visit my aunt and uncle who lived out in the forest nearby. My uncle was a lumberjack, and had a team of Haxorus and Conkeldurr working for him. I happened to visit just around the time one of the Haxorus had laid an egg, so as a parting gift, my uncle gave me the egg to take care of. After that, I set out, earning money doing odd jobs here and there until I could afford to really travel. That was a little over a year ago, now. And that's my story..."
By now, the boat has gotten underway, and is cruising along at a smooth 6 knots. Both Axel and Ampere have settled into the seats near the stern of the boat. Walaby retrieves his pole and begins prepping the hook and bait, referencing a little handbook with a symbol on the cover that matches that of the tackle-box.
"So what about you? How'd you become a Ranger for the park?"

 

Non-Battle Post 4:

"What, me? Sure! I was trying to make it big in the pro training circuit with an Aggron, an Espeon and a dream, but I learned really quickly that I was a pretty garbage battler, haha. Didn't have the guts for it. I figured out eventually that the only reason I kept at it was going new places and hanging out outside with Pokémon, so I decided it'd be better to figure out another career line. I've been working the Park for, what, eight months now? A year? It's been a whole lot better. And hey! Still get to meet other trainers on the daily, so I'm certainly happy with the way things shook out."

As the group skimmed out over the sea, chatting up a storm as their Pokémon looked out over the water, a small atoll eventually came into view. In and of itself it wasn't a whole lot to look at, little more than a semicircular sandbar poking out above the waves. Still, for a long stretch around it buoys marked out a wide zone to fish from. Indeed, underneath their very boat the water was clear and shallow enough that one could periodically see a Finneon or Wishiwashi rapidly paddling past.

"Aaaaand... We made it! All the way out to the Lagoon of Rage, and we made good time too! With any luck we ought to be able to fish up a storm by now. You've got your gear set up? Nice! Water here's only, what, two, three feet deep, so if you want we could fish from the sandbar. Either way, it's your moment!"

Walaby's eyes light up with excitement! He leaps from his chair, closely followed by Axel and Ampere, excited by their trainer's enthusiasm.
"Excellent! I believe I have everything set, but I guess the best way to test that is to actually get out and..."
Walaby stops just before hopping out of the boat.
"Wait... did you say Lagoon of Rage?"
Walaby seems part confused and part terrified at the seemingly odd choice of name for such a calm and peaceful environment.
"Wha- why's it called that, Oliver?"

 

Non-Battle Post 5:

Did I spook him? I just- oh, whoops, yeah, that one's on me. "Ahh, it's nothing too worrisome. It's just more of a tongue-in-cheek joke than anything else. You ever been to the Kanto-Johto regions? In the one of them, there's a place called the Lake of Rage, it's famous for having a zillion folk tales about Gyarados living there. Bringers of the storm, destroyers to punish hubris or guardians to protect the weak, you name it."

"So when the Park's founder, Mr. Farnsworth, bought up the place and started developing it, they named this spot after that because it's positively crawling with Magikarp. No sightings of anything worse, mind. I'm not about to run us afoul of anything dangerous, not for just a quick fishing trip. Speaking of which..."

It looked like they may not even have needed their fishing poles; a Magikarp had accidentally beached itself on the sandbar! Flopping about pathetically, Oliver could hear its loud gasping all the way from the boat. "Well, what'd I tell you. This is it, you're on, man! Show 'em what you've got!"

"I do remember hearing something about that. A red Gyarados, right? Wacky. Anyway, looks like you're right. I probably won't need this after all if this goes well. Ampere, Axel, shall we attend to our little friend on the beach?"
"AXEW!"
"Flaaaaaaffy!"
The three companions leap from the boat and approach the beached Magikarp.
"Alright, Ampere, you're up. We're going to lead with a nice, easy Thunder Shock, got it? Nothing too fancy, just enough to stun it so I can try to catch it."
"Flaaffy."
Ampere approaches the Magikarp and sends out a quick jolt of electricity at the flopping fish.

 

Battle Post 2:

The biggest fish in the little lagoon bounds impatiently, waiting for a foe to challenge its rightful position. It's only woken from its reverie by the bleating of a Flaafy behind it. So. It has come to this. It leaps from its perch to engage its enemy from its home turf... only to be grazed by a bolt of electricity.

Ampere's preemptive strike worked ideally, weakening but not devastating the king carp. Meanwhile, the fish had slipped back into the water, apparently retreating. Oliver tensed up for a moment, waiting for a return that never came. "Well, sorry about the bum luck. Sometimes a wild one just decides to dip out, and you just-" The ranger was sharply interrupted by the Magikarp leaping back out of the water with incredible speed! Having built up momentum from its high-speed swimming, it was able to throw its weight into an unexpectedly heavy blow. "Okay, never mind! Good luck!"

Using its surprisingly strong tail to shove back off of Ampere's body, the Magikarp had already returned to the water, circling around for another go. Ampere loosed another tentative shock, but his agile foe swerved around it, the electricity diffusing harmlessly in the salty water. Oliver, for his part, tried his best to offer shouted advice from the boat. "Magikarp's way faster than you'd expect in water! You're gonna need to slow that one down, else it'll take you apart a little bit at a time."

"Damn! Ampere, the next time the Magikarp jumps out, hit it with Cotton Spore! That ought to slow the thing down! Once it's sufficiently weighed down, use Take Down to pin it on the beach! Be careful of its tail, as it seems to be quite strong for a Magikarp."
Ampere nods, then shakes its wool in anticipation, getting ready to strike.
"We've faced worse though! Keep it up!"
"AXE! AXE! AXE!"
The little dragon dances behind Walaby, clearly enjoying the action.
Walaby scans the water, searching for the inevitable ripple of the charging Magikarp.
Suddenly, he spots it!
"Ampere! There! Get ready!"

 

Battle Post 3:

Ampere listens carefully to his Trainer's commands, already puffing up his fur with static cling, waiting for a signal... "Ampere! There! Get ready!" The sheep turns around to intercept the blow! Their opponent clearly wasn't expecting this tactic; it all but dives face-first into the fluffy fuzz, which absorbs the impact relatively harmlessly. Not only that, but multiple tufts of fur detach from Ampere, sticking to the Magikarp and weighing it down considerably. Caught by surprise, the fish isn't able to push off, and drops unceremoniously back onto the sandbar.

Ampere, meanwhile, continues the offensive, dropping down on his foe to pin it down. He presses down on his opponent carefully, just trying to stop it from moving. Unfortunately, it seems he was a little too gentle- the Magikarp flails its entire body, flopping vigorously in an effort to escape. Buffeted by the ferocious fillet, Ampere is forced to relinquish his grip on his opponent. The two fighters stare each other down, both having taken some decent lumps; Still, the Cotton Spore and being forced to fight on land were clearly slowing the Magikarp down significantly.

"Great job, Ampere! We've got it right where we want it. Just a bit more! Go ahead and hit it with Discharge. Once you land a hit, back off and I'll try to catch it. We're almost there!"
Ampere nods in approval, never looking away from the flailing fish. He wears a rather silly grin on his face. He's enjoying this quite a bit.
Axel continues his chants, clearly excited watching his friend battle such a formidable foe.
Walaby reaches into his bag and pulls out one of the park balls he received when he entered the park. He grips it in his right hand and slowly steps closer to the sand covered battlers. He has a fierce look of determination in his eyes. He points at the Magikarp.
"Alright, Ampere. GO! DISCHARGE!"

 

Battle Post 4:

It looked like Walaby was getting really into it! Ampere, meanwhile, was clearly just happy to be there. I totally called it! Guy just needed to blow off some steam. Good for them! The Magikarp, meanwhile, was trying furiously to shake off the Cotton Spore the only way it knew how: excessive flopping. Flailing around wildly, it leaps up, finally shaking off the last of the spores and launching into another assault. Unfortunately for it, by that point Ampere had finished charging up, and was audibly crackling with power! Grinning from ear to ear, Ampere unleashed his stored power with a deafening thunderclap!

Oliver slowly sat up. The startling noise of the Discharge was enough to knock him on his back even from the boat, so being up against it... The sand underneath Ampere's feet had been partially melted into glassy quartz from the blast. The Magikarp, thoroughly electrocuted, was lying a short distance away. "Hey, Walaby! You alright? One heck of a blast your guy put out there! What've you been feeding him?" Despite the joke, Oliver was clearly worried. Getting banged up on a trip to the park was one thing, but because of something easily preventable if his Ranger had been more careful? That would be more serious.

Speaking of serious, or rather, the exact opposite thereof, Ampere was already celebrating, jumping up and down and running in circles atop the small circle of fulgurite he'd created. When his gaze turned to his opponent, though, he stopped cold. Not noticing the murderous glare still looming in the Magikarp's eye, Ampere trotted over, still sporting his trademark smile, to make sure his new friend wasn't hurt.

"Ampere, be careful! Back off for now, I'm going to try to catch it. It should be fine once we've caught him. I don't want to take any chances here."
Ampere turns around, somewhat upset he couldn't check on the fish he just flash fried. He backs off nonetheless, trusting his trainer's judgement. Ampere backs away from the Magikarp as Walaby approaches, Park Ball in hand, ready to throw.
"Well, here goes nothing! Let's see how you did, Ampere."
Walaby winks at Ampere, who jumps up and lands in a silly looking flexing pose.
Walaby can't help but stifle a giggle at his partner's goofiness.
He approaches the Magikarp, staying just out of range of a potential jump, but close enough to get a good throw in.
"Here we go!"
He hurls the Park Ball at the ferocious Magikarp, and it sails through the air at its target.

 

Battle Post 5:

The Park Ball rebounds off of the Magikarp's body, hovering in midair for a moment as it opens to suck the fish inside. For a few tense moments, the ball shakes wildly as its unwilling occupant struggles against it. Just as it's about to complete the capture procedure, though, the ball is cracked open just a hair by the magikarp's struggles, forcing it to release its occupant back onto the sand. The ball, meanwhile, rolls to a stop a short ways away, no worse for the wear but probably not safe to retrieve while next to an ongoing fight.

Meanwhile, the wounded fish attempts to flee, fumbling towards the water's edge and slipping in. Though still slowed down by the residual effects of the Spore, and pursued by Ampere splashing into the shallow water after it, it tries its level best to make it to the opening of the crescent-shaped atoll. "You'd better stop that quick, once it reaches the edge of the lagoon we don't have a chance of diving deep enough to catch it!" Oliver chimes in, trying and failing to not add any more pressure to a tense situation.

"Aww, man! Ampere quick, try to stun it with as many Thunder Shocks as you can manage. If we can paralyze it, we should be able to catch it super easily."
Ampere nods in excitement, giving chase to the fleeing fish.
Axel comes up behind Walaby and tugs on his pants.
"What's up buddy?"
"AXEW!"
Axel flails his arms around and gestures towards the fish with a glint in his eye and an almost teasing look on his face.
Suddenly, Walaby's face lights up.
"Axel, you're a genius! Taunt! Of course. That's a great idea. I'll tell you what. You get ready and think of the best way to Taunt the Magikarp into staying and fighting, and if we can't paralyze him, I'll switch you two out and you hit it with the best Taunt ever, got it?"
Axel spins around and gives a cocky looking grin.
"Axe!"
"Alright, Ampere! Go for it! Thunder Shock!"
