Suddenly, the office was like a whirlwind. Trainers were coming out of the woodwork to go on expeditions to the park. Aleria had literally told another ranger to "fuck off" when said ranger was literally begging her to take on another run.

Head Ranger would probably hear about that. Aleria didn't care. She was hungry. She had to eat too. Just because the park was short staffed didn't mean she wasn't going to not eat.

She was just finishing her lunch when there was a knock at the door. "Come in," Aleria called. The person came in long enough to drop a file on her desk, and once that was done, the person walked right back out the door. She looked in the file, and she wasn't surprised when she saw it was another run.

At least she was able to get lunch.

With a sigh, she got up and made her way out of the office and to the gate for Mt. Oktori. With all the new trainers coming into the park, the runs were relatively quick. There were still some that took a few hours, but for the most part, they were done relatively quickly. If they wanted to go again, they were sent to the back of the line to wait for the next available ranger.

When she arrived at Mt. Oktori, she took a seat on a rock and waited.

Humming on his way up the path leading to Mt. Oktori, Kyle strolled alongside his Donphan, Frannie. Hailing from a cold region he had come prepared with warm clothing, boots, and a big backpack full of supplies for himself and his pokémon. The brisk chill in the air was something he hadn’t felt for some time, and its familiarity put him in a very cheerful state. He was also excited for an opportunity to see some powerful ice type pokémon! Frannie on the other hand just looked happy to be out and traveling with her trainer. Spying a stranger on the path ahead, the two restrained their excitement and approached the rock she was perched upon. Getting close enough to see she was a ranger, and hoping she was the ranger that would be accompanying him, Kyle introduced himself.

“Hello, I’m Kyle and this is Frannie. We’re here for a trip to the mountain,” he said, politely bowing, “would you happen to be our guide?”

Jeez. Trainers these days were polite. Aleria could remember the one time where someone had actually called her ma'am. She had been shocked at that. Now this guy was bowing to her. Whatever had gotten into these trainers that made them polite was a good thing though. Aleria certainly wasn't objecting. She doubted anyone else would either.

"I am your guide, yes," Aleria replied. "I'm Aleria, pleasure to meet you and your Donphan." She nodded to the Ground type that walked alongside Kyle before getting up and unlocking the gate to the mountain. "After you," she said to the trainer and his Pokemon.

Once the three of them were inside, she locked the gate behind them. "Alright, I'll give you a choice. We can either head up to the top of the mountain and see what we can find up there, or we can go explore the caverns. Where would you like to go?"

"Hmmm," Kyle thought about the choices for a moment. "Harry, come on out," he said, tossing a Pokéball. Harry, Kyle's Mime Jr., popped out of the ball. "Harry, we can either go up to the top of this mountain," Kyle said pointing, "or we can venture into the caverns around the area. Which should we do?"

Sitting down for a moment and crossing his little arms, Harry soon decided. Hopping back up, he gave Kyle a determined look and pointed towards the summit. "Mime!"

"That's what I was thinking too." Turning back to Ranger Aleria, Kyle said, "We want to go to the summit. We're looking for powerful Psychic and Ice type Pokémon, and Harry's willing to bet they're hiding up there. Anyway, exploring in the caverns would probably cut down on the space Frannie has to maneuver, and she likes big open spaces."

When presented with the option of entering the cave or making their way up to the top of the mountain, Kyle let out his Mime Jr., nicknamed Harry. That was a different nickname for a Pokemon. Aleria had heard some interesting nicknames for Pokemon, and a lot of them were better than the ones she could come up for her own Pokemon. Her Chandelure's nickname was Chandelier, for Arceus' sake. Her Charizard's nickname was Riza. Chandelier was probably jealous of Riza deep down. Aleria made a mental note to give her Pokemon better nicknames.

She nodded when Kyle decided on heading up to the summit. "Alright, sounds good." She led them up to the summit. The path was wide enough for the Donphan to move around as she pleased, and since apparently she liked wide open spaces, that probably pleased the Ground type.

They weren't far up the path when they encountered a Machop that was punching and kicking the air. The grey Pokemon seemed to have taken no notice to Aleria, Kyle, and his Pokemon. In fact, the Fighting type just continued to attack the air. Aleria turned to Kyle. "Would you be interested in a Machop?"

Kicking and punching nonstop, the Machop certainly seemed to give off an air of strength. Living on the mountain must have forced it to develop some great conditioning, and it must’ve been strong, or at least confident to flaunt its training out in the open. Machop were hardly the biggest or most intimidating Fighting types to be found in the area. Or perhaps it was just ambitious, trying to push itself far enough to progress to the next stage and become a stalwart Machoke. Either way, it seemed worthy of a moment of examination at the very least, if nothing else.

“It certainly does seem to be the focused type doesn’t it,” Kyle thought, “let’s see what we can find out.” Kyle reached into his back pocket and pulled up his Pokédex. Flipping open the cover, he pointed it towards the preoccupied Machop.

MACHOP, the Superpower Pokémon. Loves to build its muscles. It trains in all styles of martial arts to become even stronger,” buzzed the Dex.

“Well state the obvious there, Dexter,” muttered Kyle, closing the cover and tucking the underwhelming encyclopedia back into his pocket. “With Harry here, we definitely have an advantage on it. By the looks of it that Machop is definitely a little powerhouse, but a Mime Jr.’s power is measured in more than just muscle. And I definitely wouldn’t mind adding a martial artist to the team, so let’s go for it.” Kyle quietly returned Frannie to her Pokéball, and looked to Aleria for the final O.K.

If there was one thing the Machop heard from the trainers talking, it was fight. It had perked up at the sound, but when Kyle had agreed to fight the Fighting type, it stopped fighting the air and brought its attention to the group. It walked towards them and punched the air. "Machop, mach!"

"Looks like it's ready for a fight," Aleria said. The Machop bowed to them and nodded to the Mime Jr., the presumed opponent. "I guess he's giving you the first move."

She stepped off to the side a bit, not wanting to get caught in the impending fight. "When you're ready then."

    (let's make it a male)
    --------------------------------------

Kyle was impressed by the intelligence the Machop showed. He wondered if all Fighting types were really like this. He had lived so long with a Psychic type Pokémon by his side that he had expected to be going up against a meathead when he met a Fighting type. Turns out they might be more similar than he’d guessed. This Machop definitely knew everything that was going on around it, and had some faith in his own strength if he was willing to accept random challengers in a fair fight. Kyle’s blood really started pumping; he put his pack down and got ready for a battle. This is why he’d come to the park with Harry and Frannie, to challenge them with strong wild Pokémon.

“We’ll do our best not to let him down,” Kyle said confidently, “right Harry? He’s going to regret giving us the first move!”

“Mime!” replied the Mime Jr., taking up a stance in-between its trainer and its opponent.

“Harry, shake it up with Fake Out!” commanded Kyle.

Machop crouched down a bit as Kyle gave his Pokemon the first command. Energy surrounded his grey body, and he remained focused on the little Psychic type before him.

The Mime Jr. bounced on his feet and watched the Machop for a moment. Fake Out was a move that would theoretically make the Machop jump. If it was timed right, he'd lose his focus. The energy increased in intensity as time passed. Machop's muscles seemed more defined as he focused his energy.

But just as that energy was about to come to a breaking point, Mime Jr. moved, and he moved fast. Machop remained focused as Mime Jr. quickly moved towards the Fighting type. Mime Jr. jumped in front of Machop and clapped in front of the Pokemon's face. Machop jumped at the motion. His focus was broken as he staggered backwards and tripped. He fell on his butt and let out a quiet cry when he landed.

"So much for those critical hits," Aleria commented.

"Great job Harry!" shouted Kyle. The Mime Jr. hopped back towards his trainer, resuming a ready battle position as he anticipated Kyle's next command. "Don't give that Machop a chance to recover, hit it with Psychic. Spin him around as fast as you can then drive him into the ground with all your might."

Excited to hit his opponent hard with one powerful move, Harry exuded his aura and raised up his arms towards the staggered Fighting type. With faith in Harry's power to finish the fight, Kyle reached into his bag to ready one of the three Park Balls for the weakened wild Pokémon.

Encouraging trainer. Aleria liked that. And he was acting fast too, which was a bonus.

Still, Machop was a little annoyed that he'd been knocked over by Mime Jr. He readied a fist and rushed towards the little Psychic type. Electrical energy surrounded Machop's hand, but the punch the little Fighting type hoped to land would never hit. Mime Jr. raised Machop into the air with psychic energy just in time to avoid being hit by the Thunder Punch Machop had been readying up. Machop spun around in the air, spinning faster and faster with each passing second. Mime Jr. was certainly having fun with this guy. It wasn't long before Mime Jr. lowered his arms and Machop was released from the psychic energy. He came crashing into the ground with a cry.

Machop was eager for a fight though, and he wasn't going to go down without landing at least one hit on the Mime Jr. He had landed relatively close to Mime Jr., so he managed to muster up some strength to sweep the little Psychic type off of his feet with an outstretched leg. Mime Jr. fell on his own butt, and Machop gave a proud smile as he slowly made his way back to his feet.

"Payback for knocking him on his butt earlier," Aleria commented with a smile. Those two would probably be good friends after all of this was said and done.

Mime Jr. quickly stood up and hopped away from the smug Machop to avoid a follow-up strike. He quickly dusted himself off and stared down his opponent with a little bit of an attitude after having a hand laid on him. Harry was the one who plays the jokes, not the one who suffers them. Now it wasn't just about beating the Machop but embarrassing him and letting him know that he'd found one of the Mime Jr.'s buttons and pushed it, which he shouldn't have.

"It's okay Harry, this one doesn't know what he's in for. See how he likes his own medicine. Use Copycat, combo it with Barrier and school him with some hard knocks!" called Kyle.

It didn't take Mime Jr. long to hop back up onto his feet. The baby Pokemon wasn't very happy about being knocked down either. No surprise there.

The first move Mime Jr. used was Copycat, and it rushed towards Machop to sweep the Fighting type off his own feet. It used a Low Kick of its own successfully, much to Machop's surprise. Machop was knocked back onto his butt as the Barrier Mime Jr. had been commanded to do went up around the baby Pokemon.

Machop tumbled backwards though when he was knocked down and used the momentum to get back on his feet and leap in the air towards Mime Jr. The Fighting type slammed the side of his hand on Mime Jr., though the barrier helped reduce some of the damage the little Psychic type would take.

Kyle could tell Harry was starting to get irritated with the Machop’s resilience. The wild Pokémon’s candor was leaving an impression on the trainer though, and Kyle looked forward to finding an opportunity to catch the little fighter. However, between Harry’s impending impatience to finish the fight and the moves the Machop had shown off already, he knew he had to wrap it up quickly or risk would continue to climb in a drawn out fight. If the Machop managed to build up momentum after a successful blow Harry would be in big trouble.

“Alright Harry, put everything you’ve got into a Psybeam. Take your aim and blast this guy, end it!” he shouted.

Both Pokemon were starting to show signs of being worn out from this battle. While it hadn't lasted very long, that didn't stop the Pokemon involved in the fight from showing the beginning signs of fatigue. Still though, Mime Jr. had a lot more energy in him than Machop did. The battle was definitely getting to Machop, but then again, Mime Jr. had the upper hand from the beginning thanks to his type advantage.

As Mime Jr. gathered energy for what would likely be one of the final blows in this battle, Machop decided to take on a different strategy in this fight. His physical attacks weren't doing much to Mime Jr., but perhaps special attacks would be a completely different issue. Machop took a deep breath and let out a burst of fire just as Mime Jr. released his Psywave. The baby Psychic type used his hands to channel the wave and maneuver it past the incoming Fire Blast so that it would hit Machop. Mime Jr. was forced to let go of the channel, however, when the Fire Blast got closer and he had to try to side step to avoid the incoming attack. While he avoided a direct hit from the attack, he couldn't avoid it completely. The flames scorched the right side of his body, and Mime Jr. winced in pain as the effects of the burn took hold of the little Psychic type's body.

"Looks like Mime Jr.'s been burned," Aleria commented. "I don't think it'll be too much to worry about though. He mostly uses specially based attacks, and this battle is almost over anyways."

At this point if Kyle would have been taking a drink, the area would have been drenched by a massive spit-take.

“Fire Blast, you just have to be kidding me right? This little dude has unexpected trump cards left. Gotta wonder where he picked up a technique like that though,” the trainer mumbled to himself. “Good job Harry, just hang in there and I think we’ve got him now.” Kyle didn’t want to wait for another nasty surprise, and wanted to start tending Harry’s wounds and healing that burn as soon as possible. He reached back into his bag and nabbed one of the three Park Balls.

“Alright Machop, you put up a fight but now it’s over. You’re mine!” Kyle shouted, slugging the Park Ball straight at the weakened Machop.

Aleria couldn't help but let out a little chuckle at Kyle's surprise. It was always nice to see new trainers be surprised by what the Pokemon of the park had in store for those that decided to fight them. They always had little tricks up their sleeves that could throw off new trainers to the park if they weren't expecting them. "Yeah, the Pokemon here are a lot brighter than you might've expected," Aleria replied with a chuckle.

But it was time for the capture. Machop was preparing for another attack, but the Park Ball that Kyle had taken out soared through the air. It hit the Fighting type, and he was absorbed into the ball.

It shook once... it shook a second time... and it shook a third time...

    Click!

Aleria approached the ball and bent down to pick it up. She dropped it into her bag and turned to Kyle. "I'll have to hold onto the Machop for now, but when all's said and done, you can have him back." She paused for a moment, taking a look around. There were some rocks nearby that they could rest on, but that was all up to Kyle. "Did you want to take a break or keep going?"

“Let’s take a break so I can tend to that burn,” Kyle replied. Picking up the winded Mime Pokémon, he headed towards the rocks. Sitting Harry down on a boulder, the trainer dug through his pack to find a Lava Cookie.

“Eat this and you’ll feel better,” he told Harry, handing him the cookie. “Great job capturing that feisty Machop for us.” Harry chewed his way through the cookie, looking noticeably perkier after finishing it. “Don’t you think it’s a little ironic that something they call a ‘Lava Cookie’ can heal a burn?” he asked Aleria.

“You get to sit the next round out Harry,“ Kyle returned his partner to its Pokéball and produced another. “You have the next one Frannie.” Throwing the ball away from the rocks, it popped open on the ground and Kyle’s Donphan appeared in a flash of light.

Kyle said resting was fine, so she went and took a seat on one of the rocks. It wasn't the most comfortable surface in the world, but it was better than standing around while Kyle tended to his Pokemon's wounds. After he sat his Pokemon down on one of the other rocks, he went through his bag to take out a Lava Cookie. Good thing they gave new trainers that, otherwise the poor Mime Jr. would have to suffer with that burn until Kyle got out of the park and into a Pokemon Center.

The Mime Jr.'s condition improved greatly after eating the Lava Cookie. "That is ironic," Aleria replied. "Kinda makes you wonder what went through the inventor's head when they named the cookie, y'know?"

She shrugged. Probably wasn't that big of a deal. Whoever invented the Lava Cookie probably didn't think about how the name Lava Cookie would be an ironic name for something that could cure burns in addition to other status conditions.

Mime Jr. was returned to his Poke Ball to take a rest break, and then a large elephant-like Pokemon appeared, a Donphan. "Ready to go then?" she asked.

“Yeah I’m ready, let’s try to make some headway up this trail before anything finds us down here lollygagging at the bottom,” Kyle replied, stretching his legs for the hike.

“Alright Frannie, that Machop that Harry just took on obviously wasn’t the kind big on ambushes but stay on guard while we make our way on this path up the mountain. Surely some of the Ice-Types hanging around aren’t keen on being disturbed. The last thing I want this trip is an Ice Beam to the back or getting blindsided with a Headbutt.”

Frannie waved her trunk back and forth knowingly, and as the group set off happily plodded along on her powerful but stumpy legs closely beside her trainer.
