Aleria waited for Kyle to finish giving a warning to his Donphan before she started to walk. She had slid off of the rock once he gave her the okay to keep going, but once he started to talk to his Pokemon, she thought it would be best to wait a moment for him to finish speaking. Once he was done, she started to lead the way along the trail.

"Nothing should attack us unless you attack it first. All of the Pokemon we'd be encountering today are in their most basic forms. If anything, they'll probably be a little intimidated by your Donphan," she told Kyle. Then she shrugged. "Then again, I suppose you never know when a Pokemon might decide to try and fight something bigger than it."

Their walk along the trail led them further up the mountain. While the ground level was a bit warmer than upper levels, as they traveled up the mountain, the temperature started to drop. At first, it wasn't so bad. As they kept walking up towards the summit, Aleria wished that she'd brought her jacket along with her. She kept one in the office in case she ever had to come to Oktori. This mountain was the only home to Ice types in the Park, so it made sense that temperatures would be frigid.

Then again, just before this run had started, she had told another Ranger to "fuck off" so that she could eat lunch. Perhaps this was karma biting her in the ass for that.

It was easy to see when they were entering the territory of the Ice types because a thin line of snow divided the mountain. It wasn't really a straight line, but it was a line nevertheless. They continued up the mountain.

Their path to the peak was blocked by a small Pokemon that looked very similar to an ice cream cone. It floated in the air before them, blocking their path. "We've got a Vanillite here," Aleria said, resisting the urge to rub her arms. "Are you interested in it?"

“I see what you mean, that certainly is an appetiz… I mean that’s a very little Pokémon,” replied Kyle, starting to feel more at home in the falling temperatures. He pulled up his often redundant Pokédex to see if it had anything significant to contribute for once.

VANILLITE, the Fresh Snow Pokémon. It feels pleasantly cool when embraced. This Pokémon is treasured by households in warm regions.

“So like a reverse space-heater you want to cuddle, interesting. Well I’m always trying to find some powerful Ice-Type Pokémon. This little one may look more playful than powerful, but still I think we should see what it’s got, eh Frannie?” asked the Trainer, playfully prodding his partner with his knee.

Frannie again gave him a confident wave of her trunk, “That’s a yes, so let’s take it on.”

Aleria nodded when Kyle confirmed he wanted to fight the Vanillite. The Donphan fighting an Ice type was a bit odd to her, but this wasn't her fight; it was Kyle's, and her duty was to take a step back and watch everything unfold.

The Vanillite seemed to hear Kyle's comment about being playful, so she floated over to the ground elephant and hovered in front of it. She examined the much larger Ground type, as if she were sizing him up for a fight. Then she blew some frigid air in the Donphan's face, putting a light frost over the elephant's feet. Vanillite giggled and floated back to her original position.

"Looks like you've got playful right," Aleria commented, shivering a bit. Her body had gotten used to the frigid temperatures of the area, but Vanillite's Icy Wind made it worse. "Your Donphan's gonna react a bit slower than it normally would now though, thanks to that Icy Wind."

Donphan was bigger and theoretically stronger though, so hopefully speed wouldn't be a determining factor in who won this fight.

“That’s going a bit beyond playful in my book. It’s okay Frannie, you can shake it off right! We’re from Snowpoint, it’ll take a lot more than that to stop us in our tracks,” Kyle said, letting Frannie know he was still behind her. “Let’s show this little scoop that we have tricks too.”

Frannie flapped her ears and stomped her feet, unhappy about the blast Vanillite had greeted her with.

“Stop this Vanillite in her tracks with your most frightening Scary Face! When she’s petrified, spin up and bowl over her with your Rollout. That should do some damage and knock a little moxie out of her,” instructed Kyle.

Kyle made it clear early on that what Vanillite had done was beyond playful. Aleria smiled. Even in this icy climate, a fire had been lit in Kyle and his Donphan. The Ground type stomped her feet in frustration. Donphan also made it clear that she was not happy about the blast of frigid air that had been blown in her face.

Still, the Vanillite wasn't intimidated by the fires that had been lit in the trainer and his Pokemon. The Pokemon that resembled an ice cream cone raised her stubby arms into the air and brought them down quickly, releasing a gust of frigid air that conjured up a hail storm. Aleria frowned. She was grossly underprepared for this climate, and she was even more grossly underprepared for the hail storm that Vanillite had conjured.

"Guess we'll find out what ability she has soon," Aleria commented. "If it's Hailing now, we'll be able to see if she has Ice Body or Snow Cloak."

But that little bit of knowledge would have to come later in the battle. Donphan had rushed up to the Vanillite and jumped in front of the the little Ice type, starling the wild Pokemon. The sudden fear she experienced made her release a stronger than usual beam of ice towards the Ground type. It was enough to knock Donphan back, but she used the newfound momentum to roll up and forced her body to redirect that strength into striking Vanillite. The ice cream cone-like Pokemon was still dazed from the earlier Scary Face, so Rollout knocked her down and out of the air.

The hail fell on the bodies of both Donphan and Vanillite. The difference was that the hail harmed Donphan's body, and some of Vanillite's wounds disappeared or cleared up completely as the hail touched her body. She was able to float back up into the air slowly.

"Looks like she's got Ice Body," Aleria said.

“Oh man, who expected so much trouble from a snow cone?” Kyle uttered with a little disbelief. He pulled his coat up tighter and braced a little bit from the hail. He still knew that Frannie could take it down though, the little sprite had yet to throw out anything she couldn’t handle. And, even if Frannie was at a type disadvantage, her physical power coupled with a few trump cards were surely enough to overwhelm this tiny Ice Pokémon. Harry wouldn’t have any advantage over this Vanillite that would justify switching out anyway. But, perhaps it was time to pull out one of those trump cards and try to bring this fight to a swift end.

“Alright Frannie, keep that roll going and don’t give in. Use all that speed, bring it back around, and after you smash that little cone to the ground again pounce on it with Fire Fang!” Kyle yelled. Frannie, hearing her Trainer’s encouragement, zoomed back around the battlefield. Pulling a tight loop around her trainer, Frannie again directed her curled body towards Vanillite in preparation for the combo to try and shut it down before it added more tricks to the battle.

Aleria rubbed her arms to try and give her body a bit of warmth. If there was one thing she wanted more than ever, it was for this battle (and ultimately, this run) to be over. She couldn't force the trainer through though, so the little bit of warmth rubbing her arms gave would have to do for now.

Kyle was shocked at the damage the Vanillite was doing to his Donphan. Aleria shrugged. It did have the type advantage, after all. That didn't deter Kyle and his Donphan though. Together, they were preparing for the next round.

Kyle's words of encouragement were not just heard by his Donphan, but they were heard by the Vanillite as well. Donphan sped around her trainer, pulling a tight loop around Kyle and speeding past Aleria.

"Whoa!" she cried out, stepping back to avoid the speeding Donphan. Being freezing cold was one thing she could deal with, taking an injury from a Donphan using Rollout was not. Aleria would probably finish the run, but she would definitely be nursing an injury for the rest of it had she been knocked over by that Ground type.

Vanillite used an Ice Beam to try and create a slippery path and a wall for Donphan to crash into, but the slippery path merely increased the Ground type's momentum. The two crashed into each other and tumbled away. With flaming fangs, Donphan sank her teeth into the Vanilite's body, causing the little Ice type to cry out in pain. Still, the Vanillite was able to conjure up enough strength to wave her arms around and conjure up a strong enough Blizzard to knock Donphan away from her.

The hail continued to fall, and what harmed Donphan healed Vanillite.
