I'm in the process of choosing people to be on this committee and working out a very basic plan of action. I want to put out a pre-emptive statement that if you're not chosen, it's nothing against you, it's just that these things work better with a more contained unit, and I need the best of the best.

I'll be waiting another day or two and then bringing in a few people who will help the shaping and moulding of our precious little TPW newbies.

Okay, so guys, let's get the discussion rolling. According to Harry's definition, we are supposed to:

Before I start throwing all my ideas at the wall, do you guys have any?

I've mentioned that I'd like to run the Mentor/Apprentice program again and I like the way that during my break WTP updated it so that each person teaches a specific thing. If you guys agree, I'd like to start that up again seeing as we'll have so many newbies, though I'd like to limit it to people who join after a certain date.

I generally do practice reffing scenarios with people who ask.

I'm not really sure that a Mentor/Apprentice program is a good idea. Like WTP said (at some point) that gives the newbies the impression that they should only go to one person to help, which isn't a good thing. The only way that would work is if we try to pair up people who are in the same timezone / share a schedule and even then I can see it failing.

We should look at maybe doing some kind of pooled Mentor Program, where you can go and see any of these X people for Judging help, any of these Y people for Grading help, etc. And I like Monbrey's idea of offering free, no-expectations job testing. We can easily figure them out for all the professions I would think.

That'd be cool I think. We definitely need more people with professions. Anyways yeah, those were my ideas pretty much.

The whole 'pooled Mentor program' is already there, although not really promoted -- I'm sure in most "so, you want to be a _? do x, y and z" threads in each forum, there's always something that says that you should ask one of the Senior Ref/Judges, Elite Rangers or Grader Testers if you need help with the quiz or test. I suppose that not many people will actually do that, as it is a little daunting -- especially for someone new or otherwise inexperienced. That option's still open, really, although I'm not sure that many people know about it. I guess that a small program like this wouldn't be amiss, even with that in mind -- people will find it less intimidating to go to a group who they know are there solely to help them, other than worrying themselves about bothering one of the senior people things.

UM. I have no real ideas of my own at this present moment in time, just vague things swimming around. I'll brainstorm and see what I can come up with. :>

What if we were to compile an Aptitude Test? Include a little bit of everything, nothing super complicated, to see what jobs people would initially be best for?

    That's a good idea Monbrey.

I'm also down for practice tests. I'd be happy to make some other Ranger questions, and I've helped a few people with reffing practice. I can also help with BW Judging, although that's not official.

Also we could take some stories of our own that have grades already and give them to those wanting to learn how to grade as a practice test. That way we can sort of have a plan of specific things to point out in that particular story, and the padawons might like comparing how they did to the official grade given. That Grader test is a little daunting, especially the third story XD

Sounds like a good plan. I'll the Ranger part. Monbrey, Alaska, Buoy, Gman: Reffing, Grading, Judging, B/W Judging, please. Make it short-ish and not too hard.

Here's what I meant with the pooled Mentor Program. I realise that you're right, Buoy, this technically already exists but if we actually announce it people might go to others for help. I know from many many different newbies that seniors can be intimidating, so if we go out of our way to be friendly and nice they'll be more comfortable when asking us for help.

Obviously it'd be a bit more fleshed out than just that, but that's the bare beginnings. Also, what does everyone think of making a Mentor Blast Chat? Something that people can broadcast their help requests in?

ADDENDUM: That's weird, I could have sworn I posted this from my phone a couple days ago. Oh well.

I own Newbie Chat. We can use that, if you'd like. Also, on a side note, I'm not sure if Art will be open by the time we go to TPW, but if it is should we also do a practice test for that?

EDIT: Winnibelle's already in that chat from whenever ago, I'll go ahead and promote her to an admin in case you guys want to use it.

If Art will be open by then, then yes. Otherwise leave it out. And the Newbie Chat sounds like a definite plan, we'll invite all of the TPWers into it and tell them they can ask for help in it. Ideally, I'd like at least one Mentor in the chat at all times, but that's a little unrealistic, so we'll have to go for the biggest spread we possibly can.

EDIT: We should also teach them some basic battling tricks, like not to send status moves on a faster mon if they're carrying Substitute, or how to use good low-level Pokemon like Speed Boost Blaziken / Salamence etc.

Is it okay if you share with us the Ranger part you're going to make, perhaps as a basic outline for us to see what you expect?

Lol, I was going to model mine off of yours, DAMMIT.

Seriously though, here's something basic that I cooked up. Let me know if you guys think it is bad / completely off in the wrong direction.

I can dig that. Also, hey look, we moved over here... But yeah, I talked to Monbrey and I believe his words were "why would we have a practice test for art, we barely have a real one". I can do the grader one though. Possibly the art one later once we have a better idea of what we're doing.

Yeah, I agree, let's not worry about Curator aptitude until they can actually become, you know, Curators.

Our Curator Test is still being written, though I hope to release it before the official opening of the Art Section so we have Curators ready to go. Art may still be a while though.
