Okay, court is now in session. All rise for the judge.

Formality aside, after having a review of the situation, I'd wish to petition forward a trial towards a potential ASBO to URPG society, a creature so dangerous it has the potential to completely destroy the hopes and dreams of many.

    I bring you, Scyther.

So, why take him to court, you ask? I feel that, as a starter, he falls into the category of Uber, and shouldn't be allowed as a starter, on battling reasons.

First, a look at his stats. While his 344 HP isn't the highest, for starters it's a substantial chunk, which when backed by his comfy defenses of 259 apiece, means you'll be hard-pressed into killing it in a couple of attacks. While his special attack of 209 isn't the greatest, it has potential with his natural movepool and access to Vacuum Wave to break apart his rock type enemies who would otherwise sponge him.

However, his final stats are the major worry here.

Whichever way you look at it, 319 Attack is brutal. Scyther, in fact, has the highest attack stat of any first stage pokemon. The next highest is Krabby, who is let down by his vulnerability to special moves, which Scyther can gladly tank off with his impressive bulk. This is only magnified by the natural ability of Swords Dance, and after a single dance, Scyther effectively runs the same sort of attack as a Choice Band Salamence, which is a terrifying prospect, even in the competitive OU metagame.

This is of course supplemented by his Speed, also the highest at 309 of any stage one pokemon, with the next fastest being Voltorb, who isn't taking much from Scyther's enormous attack. While it may be argued that this speed and power can be nullified by burning or paralyzing, the problem is that Scyther will likely have you nearly dead before then, due to his other traits.

His movepool, for example. Following DPPt rules, Scyther has access to Agility, doubling Speed, and the aforementioned Swords Dance, doubling Attack, as well as Double Team, which is a moot point. His offensive movepool is backed with the power to destroy ghosts with Night Slash, accompanied with Focus Energy for that crit hax fun, as well as STABed X-Scissor which has the base strength akin to Lucario's Iron Head. Then there's the matter of Wing Attack.

As a base 60 attack, boosted to 90 by STAB, Scyther also gets the Technician ability, increasing that to a monstrous base 135 attack coming off of 319 attack, or 638 if it dances first turn. Even things that resist it will be hurting, and if anything is even neutral, Wing Attack will likely OHKO, a nasty detail. Using Steels or rock types? It gets Brick Break for those too via TM.

So, is anything capable of killing Scyther? If it has set up a dance, you'll likely need Onix to defeat it, or something capable of using priority. But then that's why Scyther can use tech-boosted Vacuum Wave for your Ice Sharders, and Quick Attack for anything else. And if you're using something to try and outlast, a critical from Slash or Night Slash will end your game.

In short, Scyther is incredibly overpowered, and if he isn't banned, it may lead to a world where everyone starts with him, resulting in speed ties between battling bugs to see who WA's first, something dreadful.

Which is why I wish to put forward this court case for the public to decide, giving my evidence. Ban, or don't ban?

I love Scyther, but my vote is to ban him. There's a definite reason why I love him so much, and he's too good to be a Starter.

Unless someone else provides proof that Scyther SHOULD NOT be banned, I agree that Scyther should be banned as a starter. But in the end, the mods have the power, so it's their choice

Scyther will be banned when URPG makes tiers and bans Salamence. For real though, if you're so afraid of Scyther, go buy a Larvitar or Geodude. Both counter him 100% for the most part.

Scyther is indeed a pretty good starter. However, once you get to the point to where everyone has a few or more Pokemon, what starter you chose gets less and less relevant. I think the real issue is asking why Pokemon like Dratini and Larvitar are not available as starters, when you can just buy them at the Pokemart.

I think it's worthy to ask how many other Pokemon are banned as starters for their outright power. If no others are - Why start here? (No, that's not rhetorical.) If others are, I'd have less of a problem including him. Other than starting with him, he's only available by stories, right?

Scyther is a pretty strong starter, but it also has many weaknesses. There are many Fire types others can and have start with. Add the fact that there are many Water types with Ice moves, and Ground types with Rock moves...

In conclusion, I vote no because his stats are balanced out with quite a few weaknesses.

I'm not sure if this is such a good idea. Ubers are ubers because they have very little checks and/or counters. Scyther has plenty of checks and enough counters. When it evolves and competes with the other fully evolved Pokemon, Scizor is nowhere near Uber. An uber is a Pokemon so powerful that its very appearance in a match gives its user a distinct advantage. A combination of high base stats and a good movepool combine to make some Pokemon far too powerful. Sounds like Scyther? Nope.

Another thing is that URPG isn't tiered. If it were then that would limit the Pokemon available and the overall smoothness of the battling scene. If Scyther were to be banned the URPG should just go tiered.

i have scyther as a starter and yes sword dance wing attack combo destroys everything but its defenses are not all its cracked up 2 be granted if wing attack connects it will OHKO u but it would be unfair 2 take it off starter list if i can start with scyther my friend should to and if u put it on the buy list for say 6000 to fully evolve it will cost more then a garchomp and a sicssor does not come near the brokenness of a garchomp and if u never made this the word about the combo would get out much slower if not never but w/e don't fix something if its not broken

Granted I'm a newbie here, however I know full well what pokemon are too strong and what aren't. The way I see it, the starter sections states that any pokemon that aren't fully evolved, and can still evolve, are eligable to become starters, so long as they are not legendary or psuedo-legendary. And I know full well that a wing attack from a scyther would totally anhiliate my Tyrogue, but that's all part of the game. Players have the choice of who they want to fight with, and its their own decision to get into a hopeless battle.

My vote? No, keep it in

Maybe you should actually battle for a little bit and see that Scyther's not that great in the long run, and Scizor gets raped by fire attacks which are plentiful. Experience in URPG is key, it's a whole new battlefield!

Seriously, having a small advantage with Scyther at the beginning of your adventure means absolutely nothing in the long run. Sure you may some of your first battles, but that really doesn't mean much.

Just try to gain a little more experience with these pokemon and figure out there counters and such things or just ask somebody about it, no need to put to much effort into your post. Love you. :)

Scyther's not going anywhere, tbh, if it was a problem, it would've been fixed by now. :x

I fought a Scyther head on with my Murkrow. Did I stand much of a chance? No. Did that stop me from fighting him in hopes of my Super Luck kicking in and giving me a last second hit in? No. It is all about chance and fighting the odds that are out against you. In the real world people can have an edge over you, your only answer is working harder than them and ultimately beating them later on down the line. In URPG, this is the real world.

I am not worried about Scyther in the least. Magmar, Ampharos, any flying type like Scarmory.

If it isn't legendary or pseudo-legendary (like Dratini and Larvitar) I see no reason to ban it as a starter. From an RPing standpoint, just because it is strong doesn't mean you wouldn't be able to have it be your first pokemon. There are plenty of good, believable back stories to having a Scyther as a starter.

Actually, Cranidos is the highest of first stage Pokemon - 349 ATK. Iirc, that's only banned because it's a fossil Pokemon.

But really, all that I could've said has been said by people. Scyther's not going to be banned, and it doesn't need to be.

Put it this way. Should Onix be banned? Hardly, and I should know - he was my starter. Onix evolves by trade with Metal coat. So does Scyther. Scyther's evolution has higher defense, but is slower. Same goes for Steelix in relation to Onix. Is Onix good enough to be considered Uber? No way. If you ban Scyther, you have to ban Onix. You can't ban Onix, therefore you can't ban Scyther. Case closed.

That's like saying we don't ban Dratini, so we cant ban Latios. They are both Dragon typed Pokemon that can learn Surf and Dragon Dance, and they are Blue, with Grey on it. That's great, but the glaring diference is that they are very diferent Pokemon. Obviously we can ban Latios and not Dratini, because Latios is broken, and Dratini is not.

Dratini is banned as a starter, though, so that was a bad example :3
