How do you think this should work (if at all)?

  1. This idea is stupid. Don't use it at all.

Alright so people have suggested, and I've been thinking about it for a while, Generation Clauses.

Let's use Gen4 Clause as an example.

    Options:
(1): All mechanics (none for gen4) and all older moves work as they did at the end of gen 4.
(2): All mechanics (none for gen4) and all older moves work as they did at the end of gen 4. All gen 5 Pokémon, moves, and abilities can't be used. (Possibly add all DW abilities)
(3): All mechanics (none for gen4) and all older moves work as they did at the end of gen 4. All gen 5 Pokémon, moves, abilities, and items can't be used. (Possibly add all DW abilities)
(4): All mechanics (none for gen4) and all older moves work as they did at the end of gen 4. All gen 5 Pokémon, moves, abilities, and items can't be used. All moves and abilities not learned in or before gen 4 can't be used (Such as Dragonite's BM Aqua Jet or Medicham's level up Acupressure).

These are my ideas for 4 possible uses of the generation clauses. If you have a different idea speak up.

Also, which generations should there be a clause for? I think 2/3/4, maybe 1 even, but I'm open to other suggestions (like if you don't want older generations).

    Post ideas here.

Interesting idea, but to me it seems like there isn't any choices. If you're going to run Gen IV clause, you shouldn't be able to use anything that's brought in during the lifespan of Gen V. No Chandelure, no Drought on Ninetails, no Rocky Helmet, no Flame Charge, no Extremespeed on Pikachu. Calling something a "Gen IV Clause" but then retaining Multiscale or Acupressure on Medicham (to use your example) isn't really a true Gen IV Clause.

I know, I'm stating that I don't believe that any of the other options are even valid. You can't seriously slap something called a "Gen IV Clause" onto a battle and then halfway-through command an Aqua Jet from a Multiscale Dragonite.

I think this is just overcomplicating things tbh. I think battles are pretty much figured out and we have everything we need. Just seems like more rules for people to learn.

It also seems a little bit cheap to me. I mean, giving a gym leader the option to limit stuff to Gen IV kinda sounds like they're refusing to follow the evolution of the games. For example, I'm pretty sure if this Gen IV Clause came into use, every Grass / Ice / Rock / Bug / etc Gym Leader ever will use it just to ban Speed Boost Blaziken. As much as I loathe Speed Boost Blaziken, I have to admit that it's part of the game that Game Freak designed and that we all play, and being able to pick and choose the parts of the game that you like to battle in is not a good thing.

Why don't we just implement some Digimon style rules?

Stop trying to give battling handicaps; we already have enough. If you aren't good enough to win with your own wits, then obviously you need to put on your big boy shorts and try again until you are.

I honestly don't see a need for the clause. I doubt it would be used enough to warrant such a thing. If you want to do a battle with this kind of stuff just ask the person before hand and have an unofficial agreement.

The standard GSC and RSE rules already do this to an extent - Abilities are not allowed in GSC, No Physical/Special split in both, etc...

The only thing I can see this doing is adding unnecessary fuss, because it means we don't have to just remember the most up-to-date mechanics, but 5 sets of them.

Also, everyone would just spam Gen I clause for broken CH rates and Wrap/Sleep whoring.

I wanted to run gen IV clause in a gen IV gym from the moment Gen 5 came out, if I had a gen 1 gym, gen 1 clause... why, because it's the rules and mechanics of the region

Not to mention the whole "Psychic Pokemon destroy everyone" approach >.> there's a reason Dark was introduced after all.

I'm sorry, Ash, but I just don't see the need for any of these clauses. Pretty much whatever Chainy said. I stopped reading after all the gifs.
