I'm having some trouble deciding on which I should choose. Alakazam has better sp. atk, but Gardevoir has better sp. defense and can take more hits... what do you guys think?

Alakazam. If you can take out your opponent before they hit you, you don't need defense.

Alakazam. Psychics are not defensive. They are offensive. And Alakazam is one of the best.

Alakazam. Might not have the best defenses, but it's not needed.

Alakazam. High Special Attack and high Speed? Good combination. Kill your opponent or weaken them severely before they can attack. :B

Gardevoir, Trace Ability can be far more useful than Synchronise (Tracing Water/Volt Absorb for example)

Alakazam is classic, and has killer stats. Gardevoir is an inferior incarnation. Gallade, on the other hand...

    Gardevoir

    - Trace
    - Larger supporting movepool
    - Excellent stats all around
    - Low speed

    Alakazam

    - Ties with Porygon-Z for highest non-Uber Special Attack
    - Fastest Encore user
    - 120 base speed
    - Low defenses

Overall, I like Alakazam better, both of them are great though.

Alakazam=better sweeper(tied with P-Z for having the highest SpAtk of any non-legendary Pokemon)
    Gardevoir=better wall/staller

So whichever one fits your style of play from that.

If you like to sweep and hit things really hard, go for Alakazam. If you like to support your team, go with Gardevoir. Personally, I'd go for Alakazam, since I'm more offensively inclined.

I really prefer Espeon over either, but I'll say Alakazam.

They have extremely similar movepools, with a few differences and exclusivities dotted about here and there. Alakazam has a base stat total of 490, and Gardevoir's total is 518, but obviously it's also about their distribution as well. While Gardevoir packs a huge 125 base Special Attack, its mediocre Speed stat (base 80) does let it down on the offensive front. Base 80's not bad, but then it's not amazing either. However, Gardevoir does boast a massive 115 base Special Defense stat, and its base HP is higher than Alakazam (68, higher than 55), meaning it can sponge special attacks much better than Alakazam, sometimes even Super-Effective ones.

An example would be a Shadow Ball from a Life Orb, or even Choice Specs, Gengar. Gardevoir survives both (Life Orb leaves it at around 20%, Choice Specs around 9%), whereas Alakazam is OHKO'd by both. Of course, Alakazam is faster than Gengar, and can OHKO it with Psychic as long as it's got an item boost of some descript.

It all comes down to what you prefer I guess. I personally like Alakazam because Gardevoir's a bit too slow for me.

Alakazam's speed allows it to almost completely outclass Gardevoir, especially with the threat of Encore allowing you to get a free turn.

Gardevoir gets Encore in HGSS now too. Although I agree, a faster Encore is a better Encore. You always have to be careful what move you use against an Alakazam because it's so fast. @[email protected]

I'd have to say Alakazam. Been using it for a while now, and I just love the damn thing. It really makes you think, it has a great movepool, good speed and sp atk. With just giving it a set of Wise glasses you can take out a Gengar or Infernape in 1 hit, and for bulkier opponents you can encore and set-up. Reflect, Light Screen, and even barrier are always handy. Magic Coat is probably my favorite move ever, which it gets from breeding...

    I could go on really...

Alakazam may be fast, but there is one thing it lacks that Gardevoir possesses, albeit not an effective one.

Priority moves. Coupled with Zam's poor physical bulk, a decent STABed priority move will be doing heavy damage to the moustached one, moreso than Gardevoir, and while you may argue that Alakazam has Recover, this isn't saving him from the likes of a Dusknoir Shadow Sneak or a Hitmontop Fake Out-Mach Punch combo. Hell, even Gardevoir gets Shadow Sneak, which off their poor attack isn't too strong, but is still quite effective.

Gardevoir can also burn or sleep their foes, which Zam can't do.
