    Welcome to the Jungle.

You aren't where you fell asleep.

The lights are out, and the darkness stretches out in front of you like a thick fog you can dip your fingers through. Somehow, you're standing, not knowing how you got here.

Hands reaching out, you touch cool stone. It's been smoothed by age or contact, you guess, but more importantly, you use it as a guide to progress down the inky chamber.

Eventually, light can be seen, and you unconsciously increase your pace until you're sprinting, aching to be out of the darkness. You breathe a sigh of relief as the dark stone hall emerges into a sandy arena.

But it's too early for celebration.

Across the grains, you see others, Trainers like you, coming out of their own tunnels. Some have eager, wide eyes, filled with excitement at the prospect of something cool happening. Others sport a grimace and inch forward reluctantly. What do they know that you don't?

Behind you, there is an echo. It's not a sharp sound, not like a boot against stone, but at the same time it is as it creeps ever closer. It's like skin hitting the ground rhythmically. Casually. Playfully.

A shiver inches down your spine, and you realize that maybe this won't be a good time after all. Laughter sounds in your hear, whispering right to you, and you jump, swatting at the air.

    But nobody's there.

Suddenly, a gust of wind pushes you out of the tunnel and onto the sands. Your hands automatically come up to catch you as your body tips to the ground. The grains shift to cradle you.

Torches along the stone walls suddenly go out, leaving everyone in perpetual darkness. A thin fog seems to waft through the air, but it just makes you shiver. A chorus of other people flare up, and you know you're not the only one unhappy with the turn of events.

Then, the laughter returns, and an eerie blue-green light shines at the top of the far end of the place, high up on rows of stone seats. You realize this is a coliseum-shaped place, and your stomach drops out. You know what kinds of things have happened in these.

On a stone throne, a woman is perched—or at least, what looks like a woman at first. That's where the laughter is coming from.

She's draped across the seat, legs swinging over one arm and her head propped up on a hand on the other. Nearly-white hair falls long, almost touching the bottom of the throne. She's vaguely human-shaped, but the skin color isn't quite right—that's a pale blue. When she sits up, the leathers on her bodice and skirt panels reflect the light and make her almost glow. That's when you notice the wings attached to her back. Instantly, your shoulders tighten.

    It's the dragon lady.

A sound emanates from the ground—the recognize her too. Now you're certain this is a bad idea. Nothing good ever comes from this. Even those who haven't experienced this creature first hand know how dangerous it is.

Her voice fills the amphitheater, magnified by forces unseen. “Welcome to my arena,” she coos, and the torches lining the sand slowly ignite one by one until there's an orange glow that feels anything but warm.

Suddenly, she's at the bottom of the stairs, standing in the sand much closer than she was before. You take a step backward. “I see some familiar faces! Wonderful.” The way she rolls the letters gives you the creeps. “As some of you know, here, we play by my rules.”

She grins. “And the rule today is that none of you get to leave until the last man—or woman—stands. Maybe then I'll think about it.” She puts a finger to her lips and tries to smile cutely. A sense of doom hovers over you.

“Today we will be battling Pokemon!” she shouts. “And I'll be overseeing this, doing the “reffing” as you call it.”

The dragon lady snaps her fingers, and a series of shops appear against the walls, alongside the bunkers. Gleaming instructional disks and wizened... attendants face you.

“By all means, feel free to purchase things you need during the course of this match.”

She begins to ascend the stairs, her hips swishing along with her long hair. With a sharp turn, she glares at you all from over her shoulder, her wings twitching ominously. The temperature drops ten degrees. “But be warned... If I am not entertained, there will be consequences.”

In a cloud of billowing black smoke, she disappears. Laughter chimes from atop the throne again, and suddenly she's just there. “Have a few minutes to orient yourself and choose your battler. And then the fun really begins.”

You pinch your arm, but nothing will wake you from this nightmare. You're trapped until the fight is over.

Welcome to the arena. Hell and Winter's dice await.

Welcome to my Forum Free-For-All! If you've never participated in one before, fear not, they're pretty simple. Each Pokemon is against every other Pokemon for this battle.

All moves are sent privately to me, the referee. In general, there will be about 48 hours in between turns. For now, you have until Thursday, March 31st to send your Pokemon, Gender, and Ability to me. You can send to me on any of the three forums, but please do it in a PM so we have a record for it. I won't accept VMs or IMs over Discord. I'll post starting stats on April 1st some time. I'll accept late sends if you get it to me before I post.

This also fulfills an achievement on our Challenges list, so keep that in mind if you're wondering whether to participate or not!

This FFA also has some special rules, so see those below. If you have any questions, please send me a message.

    FFA Rules

    XY Private Format
    No Helds
    Fog Weather
    Normal Terrain
    No Sleep Moves (Barring Rest)
    Evasion Clause
    Perish Song Fails
    Hit All - Hit One
    Intimidate Fails
    Imprison Fails
    Encore Fails
    Redirects On
Illusion Pokémon disguises as a random Pokémon from the dex
Not sending or forfeiting results in KO at the beginning of the turn
Those who don't send for the first turn don't count for the FFA earnings

Special Rule: Spirit of the Dice. Fog is permanently in place and cannot be removed. One additional weather type may happen simultaneously (like Fog+Rain). Every time a move misses, the user Pokemon gets +1 in a stat of their choice (barring evasion). This does not apply to OHKO moves. The stat boost applies at the end of the turn.

Special Rule: Smart Shopper. For this FFA, buying EMs between turns after the FFA has started is allowed. This rule will be disabled when there are only five Pokemon remaining—after that, you may not use any EMs obtained after that point in the FFA. This will be announced when it comes into effect.

    Turn 1 Start

Perched on her throne, the dragon lady chuckled to herself. All twenty-eight participants had no idea. Not idea at all.

She laughed again, and the sound echoed down into the arena, causing several Trainers and their Pokemon to stiffen and turn their attention toward her. Languidly, like a cat, she rose from her sprawl, rising from the seat and lazily hopping down the stairs.

Slowly, the victims of her game congregated onto the sands of the coliseum, all awaiting what she would say next. She could feel the magic of her arena curl underneath her skin, beating in tandem with her own heart in anticipation. While being stuck here might suck, it did have a couple perks.

She waved her arm, and suddenly the earth below their feet began to tremble. Many staggered, and some of the winged Pokemon took flight to avoid the tremors. The dragon lady grinned.

Evoking the magic, she disappeared into a burst of mist as the lights died down in the arena, leaving them in almost total blackness. Then, she put forth the will and magnified her voice, yet quieted it at the same time, so it would be in each player's ear.

“Tis but a dream,” she whispered. Several shivered.

Then, she disappeared completely, but something worse appeared in her wake.

Rocks of different sizes came tumbling down from the nothingness above. They crashed onto the sands. Trainers and their Pokemon screeched, diving toward the exits.

But those were barred. There was no escape.

Boulders fell, and one by one, people and Pokemon were squished.

    .

    .

You wake in a cold sweat, your heart pounding as you jerk upright, the sheets pooling at your waist.

It was all a dream. Just a dream.

There is no battle, no coliseum. You were not dragged anywhere.

    Now you can relax.

With a sigh, you lay back down.

    .

    .

    That's right kids, no FFA.

    Happy April Fool's Day :)

    .

    .

Just kidding. April Fool's again. There's totally an FFA.

    .

    .

The dragon lady surveyed the field from her throne. There was a good mix of battlers she supposed—some who were familiar and had been here before, but also a surprising amount of new faces. She ginned. All the better.

She drummed her jagged nails against the stone arm of her seat. She was expecting more from this group than the last. If she was not entertained... there would be consequences. A dark look came over her shadowed face. Someone watching her would probably be freaked out. Good.

Slowly, a murky fog began to roll in, returning a crack of a smile to her face. So it began.

She rose and hopped down the steps, her bare feet slapping loudly against the stone as the leather of her skirt and her long hair flew out behind her. She caught the attention of a couple Pokemon, who in turn alerted their Trainers, and soon everyone had their eyes on her as she jumped into the sand. It was grainy in between her toes, yet she dug the digits in like a big cat. The fog made some of them squint.

She smiled her sharp teeth and then. “It begins,” she announced, letting her voice carry across the arena, floating on the fog trails. Some people flinched. “Be warned that I will be entertained by this. Or else.”

Then, she disappeared from the sands, appearing back in her chair for a good vantage point. Down below, Trainers and Pokemon were scrambling to take positions and obtain last minute moves for their Pokemon.

Beside her, a chain rattled slightly. An Espeon, fixed to her throne, was suddenly their. His eyes were flat, but otherwise he didn't show his annoyance. He knew better by now.

The dragon lady grinned at him and reached over to scratch under his chin. “Come now, Haji, this will be fun!”

He said nothing, even though his mental capabilities would make him more than able. That was fine. If he was too grumpy, there were other Pokemon she could play with.

Like the ones on the field.

    Turn 1 Begins

Tension was thick in the arena as the players waited to start. Some shifted nervously from side to side; others were already getting into protective stances. Slowly, the Trainers began to retreat toward the walls, giving their Pokemon a wide breadth.

The fun part was that even if the humans tried to get out of the way, there were still over twenty-five players and their Pokemon in the sands. There were going to be some space issues.

The spirit of the dice couldn't wait.

Suddenly, the arena itself seemed to take a deep breath, exhausting all the orange fires and enveloping the place in inky darkness. Then, it released, and the torches flared back to life in an eerie blue-green. One of the demon attendants up near the top ring of the coliseum started ringing a bell. It was time for the game to start.

Before anyone made a move, the ground shook. Two Pokemon appeared in the sands—not ones of the battlers. These creatures had thick, dark chains draping across their body. They were attached to a ring in the middle of the ground. One, a dinosaur-like Nidoking, and the other, a squatter Venusaur. Both borrowed with love, of course.

The dragon lady grinned. She was always amused when this happened.

“See what happens when you refuse my commands!” she shouted, enjoying the wince from some of the inhabitants in the arena.

Then, the two Pokemon began to strain against their bonds, slowly edging toward the walls. As they pulled, the ground opened up. A jagged chasm appeared, bottomless and set with a poisonous green glow along the walls. Before anyone could move, three shadowy tendrils reached up through the hole and shot across the sands.

Each one wrapped around one of the pink doll-like Pokemon, a volcano imitation, and a dark-colored bird—the ones who hadn't yet prepared for battle. Despite their Trainers' protests, the Pokemon were dragged off into the abyss. Then, the shadow ropes returned and dragged their humans off too, screaming.

The chasm abruptly snapped shut and her phantom helper Pokemon vanished. The dice enjoyed the change in tone. “If you refuse to participate, this will happen to you too,” she warned.

With a snap of her fingers, she was back in her chair. Like a jolt of electricity, it sent the rest of the players into motion.

She yawned as several set up protective barriers. Boooring.

One of the poison ghosts suddenly shot out, charging up a shadowy shot very hastily—for a second, she couldn't tell which Pokemon it was and then identified it as a Gengar. In its poor form, it fired at a nearby Gardevoir who was gathering her energy. It should've probably focused a little more, because in the murk of the fog, the attack missed entirely. The dice chuckled.

The other Gengar instead opted to spit up an oozing pile of venom onto a nearby bug. It looked pretty startled—the dragon lady knew it was probably over for that one.

One of the dragons lashed out with a fist toward the Ice-type Eeveelution and one of the fairy birds sent cackling electricity toward the same Gardevoir—meant to annoy and not to kill. But other than that, most Pokemon spent time creating a replica of themselves to hide behind, like cowards.

The dragon lady was not amused. She remembered this time-waster well. There would likely be a lot more of it too. She sighed. They would learn.

Please check back for the updated stat increase if you foresee this affecting your next send.

Tentatively, the next turn's sends are needed by 11:59 on Tuesday, April 5th EST. I'll be reffing the turn on Wednesday, so get it to me before then.

Wait, so, I'm confused by the Nidoking and Venusaur, were they just there to open the pit for those who don't send?

    Turn 2 Begins

After the first phase of motion, several other Pokemon decided to take action as well. This pleased the dragon lady from up on her stone throne, gazing over the sandy arena as Trainers and their Pokemon scrambled. The real excitement hadn't started yet, but it would... soon, hopefully. It better.

Once again, the borrowed Nidoking and Venusaur materialized onto the field, chains wrapped around them. They heaved open the chasm inch by inch to reveal the glowing green murk below. Two Pokemon and their Trainers, a Clefable and an Ambipom, were dragged down into the abyss this time. The spirit of the dice shook her head. Those who refused to participate would be punished.

The other remaining monkey snuck over to the serpent-like Serperior and stole the clone it was trying to make, taking it for itself. One of the hulking rock dinosaurs, at the same time, lashed out with its powerful jaws and bit down on the Grass-type snake, causing it to cry out. Because it was too weak to defend itself, it couldn't stop the Ambipom and was left weak and defenseless in the dirt. The dragon lady grinned. More soon would join them.

The mix was about to to one this time time—the majority two-thirds were cowards and tried to heal or boost their physical or mental prowess. But the remaining third were more exciting. They lashed out.

An elephant-like Pokemon caused craters in the sands that made the rock dinosaur stumble badly, bringing it to a knee. One of the dripping dragons tried to call water to disrupt the same Donphan's sight and weaken it. The bug-like dragon lashed out with a flaming fist to its first target—the Glaceon. The fire glared across the Eeveelution's frozen plates.

In response, it sent up a call to the sky and it started to snow. The dragon lady laughed and reached out with a palm to catch the wandering flakes. However, there was an oppressive force surrounding the arena itself, so the snow and hail mix never reached the battlers, just stayed hovering above them, causing white flickers against the murky sky.

The fog curled between the battlers. It hadn't caused too much trouble this time. But it would.

    Turn 3 Begins

The dragon lady cackled as another wave of motion came over the crowd. She saw several tense as if to start an attack, and something giddy bubbled up inside her as she put her elbows on her knees, her chin in her hands, and leaned forward eagerly to watch. The fog coiled, hovering around the battlefield like it was alive, telling of the turn to come.

This time, only one Pokemon refused to participate. The icy Eeveelution, the one that the bug dragon had targeted several times, disappeared down the sickly green chasm without a trace, the Trainer following.

Then, action flared up all at once. The bug dragon streaked toward the disappearing Glaceon, but other movement obscured it for a moment. The Charizard let out a dragonic bellow at the Tyrantrum, a trumpeting call that challenged ownership of the territory. In response, the fire dragon gathered an orb of maroon energy to him, holding it like a fireball in his claws, and then threw it at the T-rex.

It blasted the dinosaur in the side and caused it to pitch over into the sand, knocked out. Her Trainer looked dismayed, but there was nothing he could do. Charizard crowed in triumph, and the dragon lady joined him, throwing her white head back and baying at the inky sky alongside him. She saw a couple Trainers shiver. The spirit of the dice could only grin—this was getting fun.

A Whimsicott came to help the Tyrantrum's Trainer off the field and into the bunkers dug out around the edges of the arena, just under the steps but where the shops weren't occupying. It was... marginally safe for them there. He joined the Shedinja's Trainer as they watched the rest of the battle.

An ancient cephalopod-type Pokemon shook until a torrent of water blasted out from its mouth, aimed at the Donphan. However, likely because of the swirling fog and all the activity around, the water veered off track and totally missed its mark. The dragon lady cackled as the fog did its work.

The Flygon, now less obstructed, swooped forward, only to see that its target had disappeared. One of the Gengar took advantage of that, sneaking up behind and laughing menacingly before spraying an icy blast of wind right at the bug dragon. However, the Flygon had the barest of warning and shot to the side, out of reach.

Unfortunately, it was looking back at the Gengar and didn't see the Garchomp pop out of the fog, like a shark on land. It slammed its claw into Flygon, sending it reeling through the air. It bounced three times off the sand and smacked into the arena wall, its eyes spinning in their unconscious state. He and his Trainer were escorted to the dugouts.

Then, one of the Togekiss saw the fluffy Altaria and immediately felt threatened. A very light, pale blast was sent in the cotton dragon's direction, but the Altaria gracefully floated upward out of reach, masked by the fog. It was entirely too focused on poisoning the Goodra—which worked. Now there was a sickly color to the normally-dripping dragon's skin. It was only a matter of time.

Only a matter of time for all indeed, the dice spirit thought. Her toes curled against the stone in anticipation.

The Sigilyph took a moment to really study the Omastar, taking in the way it was moving, the way it was storing power. And it didn't see the crippled Gengar, cackling with paralytic energy, fire a shadowy blast in its direction. Its Trainer tried to call out, but it was too late. Even the nearly-invisible screen couldn't protect it. Energy spent, it dropped out of the sky to the sands.

Four more down. Seventeen to go.

    Turn 4 Begins

The dragon lady stalked the stone stairs of the arena, watching the battle commence below. The Pokemon were beginning to become more active. This pleased her.

Once again, the chasm opened up from below and sucked down two players who weren't playing her game. The first, the Umbreon and his Trainer, were surprised, like they had been paying attention to other things. They disappeared quickly. The other's Trainer tried to protest, but he and the aggressive Gengar were yanked into the earth, only for it to seal up behind them.

The fire dragon and the old crustacean set up a protective shield. The dice spirit yawned, but it was good for the Pokemon, she guessed. Others lashed out. The double-tailed monkey aimed for the Charizard again, but he shrugged the attack off with a grin from behind his shield. The Omastar guarded against two attacks—one from the grass snake who was dangerously weak, and another from the Donphan.

The Dragonite, safely behind a plush shield, swooped in to attack the Medicham who was closely studying the Omastar. The protective sub in front of the Fighting-type exploded, sending cotton everywhere. The Garchomp, in turn, slipped into the darkness again, like the fog was water. It popped out next to the dripping dragon, lashing out at the Goodra with a claw. The soggy dragon fell to the sand instantly, kicking up dust as the Garchomp crowed in victory.

As the Whimsicott from the sidelines came to escort the fallen to the dugouts, one of the Togekiss readied an attack. It had been charging for a while, and initially, meant to target the Gengar—the one that had disappeared. Once the fairy bird realized that, it started to let the attack die. That is when the dice struck.

“I don't think so!” she suddenly yelled, jumping down several stairs to point at the offender. With her other hand, she snapped her fingers, and then the attack moved against the Togekiss' will.

The Shadow Ball veered to the side, hurtling right for the celebrating Garchomp. Unfortunately, it also had a protective substitute up. It was satisfying to watch it be blown up. The leftover scraps floated down like confetti. Goody.

The other Togekiss tried once again to hit the fluffy Altaria as it took in a harsh light. But like the other time, the pastel-colored energy totally missed, flying over the dragon's head harmlessly. For all the Altaria's huge cotton puffs, it was basically invisible. Must be a ninja.

The rest focused on fortifying their defenses, which made the dragon lady yawn. She plopped down to a step and put her head in her palm, drumming the sharp fingernails of her other hand on the stone.
