    Turn 5 Begins

The dice spirit clapped her hands together as she watched the Pokemon and Trainers struggle. Things were starting to get interesting.

This time, only one Pokemon was dragged off into the abyss—an Omastar and its Trainer that weren't paying attention. Against their will, the Venusaur and Nidoking opened the chasm for the phantom hands to drag the unwilling battlers off. People in the crowd were still cringing.

The dragon lady noted that an elegant Fairy-type, the Gardevoir who had been targeted by the crippling electric shock wave right away, was still struggling with it. In the first motions, the effect had been faint enough that it could work through it and still move. That wasn't the case now. Three separate times it had tried to wrestle with the electricity holding it immobile, but to no avail.

It was making itself pretty invisible for the most part—until the Ambipom took off toward it, hand-tails flapping. That was likely because the remaining Gengar fired a Thunderbolt at Charizard, striking the dragon down as it was attempting to recover. The dice spirit narrowed her eyes. She knew this game.

The nearly-invisible screens protected the Gardevoir to an extent, but the substitute couldn't hold. It flew apart into scraps at the monkey's slapping.

Then, a harsh light engulfed the field and even seemed to chase away the fog for a moment. The Altaria was glowing. It suddenly concentrated that energy, and with a whoosh of its massive cotton body, charged one of the Togekiss. The Fairy reeled back, stunned for just a minute.

Just long enough to not see the land shark appearing out of the fog.

The Garchomp jabbed a purple-tinted claw in the bird's direction, and with a call, it fell into the sand, fainted. It crowed in triumph—that was two down but its own hand. The dragon lady found herself cheering alongside it from the sidelines, with both of her arms up in the air and her wings fluttering.

There was a massive cluster on one side, where the Medicham, Dragonite, Mew, and others were all in close proximity. So much was happening that she couldn't tell for sure what had transpired—only that the Dragonite looked somewhat disappointed, the Mew seemed surprised, and the Medicham oddly confident. If she had to guess, the fog had played a part.

Now starting to enjoy the show, she leaned back casually on the stones, her elbows reaching the step behind her to prop her body up. She crossed her ankles and lounged as the bracelets on them jangled—the infernal mark that noted her imprisonment here.

At least she could still have some fun.

    Turn 6 Begins

The dragon could feel it—the energy that was coursing through the arena. It was building. Slowly at first, as these things usually did, but it wasn't dragging on like they tended to. Only a few weren't really involved, keeping to themselves and wasting time, thinking they could bolster themselves enough to survive any hit. She hoped those ones were next.

But the energy was growing exponentially now, almost into a frenzy. Already half the battlers had been knocked out, either carted off to the dugouts when they collapsed or dragged off into the abyss when they weren't paying attention to all the action going on.

It flooded her own veins too, making her hungry for the destruction to come. She felt that trance, that drunken haze try to cloud her senses and color her eyes red. Being trapped here, it was her only real source of entertainment. Once in a while, she'd get to influence a battle down below, through the foggy mirror—a miss here, a crippling force there.

But it wasn't like being free enough to cause her own chaos. She was bound by the dice and only evoked through them. Except here, in this place. Here, she existed.

A couple Pokemon, seeing themselves being targeted, quickly reacted. One, the Medicham, got into a focused stance that she'd seen before: one that sharpened the user's senses enough for them to swiftly dodge attacks coming toward them, for a limited time. As the Medicham acted, the Dragonite swooped in again, determined to take it out. This time, it tried to fire a wrapping coil of paralytic energy around the fighter, but Medicham swiftly sidestepped.

The Garchomp, going for its fourth kill, ducked into the fog once again, trying to be stealthy. Unfortunately, someone beat it to the punch. The remaining Togekiss lit up the area with a pastel pink mist, swirling with energy. It fired at the fluffy Altaria, who this time was too busy doing a ritual dance to notice. The Dazzling Gleam blasted it, sending it crashing to the sand.

The Garchomp, not seeing this til the last minute when it popped out of the fog, couldn't stop its trajectory and instead crashed into the Gengar—or the Gengar's substitute, rather. It shredded to pieces thanks to the dragon's sharp claws.

The ghost took little notice, being too occupied with the Gardevoir that had captured its attention. It saw the Fairy suffering, and with a sinister grin, charged up a ghastly stream of energy and fired. The shadows wrapped around the Gardevoir, intensifying the status condition it was under—so much so that it collapsed to the dirt in exhaustion. The Pokemon and Trainer were escorted off the field as well.

Some Pokemon still hadn't done anything aggressive, but the dice spirit knew their time would come. Eventually. If they didn't join the fray, the fray would join them, and that wouldn't be as pleasant.

At least, not for them. She grinned.

    Turn 7 Begins

The dice spirit couldn't sit still—not as the battle was rising to peak crescendo.

Quite a few Pokemon were bracing themselves for something, but she couldn't quite tell what. The fog was growing thicker, curling around each participant like a devious cat. The dragon lady wiggled her bare toes against the stone as she grinned.

The Donphan looked particularly focused as it dug its feet into the sands, preparing itself for a hit. Across the field, a protective barrier also flew up in front of the Dragonite. It looked relieved. Unfortunately—at least for the dragon—it wouldn't remain that way.

The Medicham had been watching the dragon closely, especially after it had attacked. Now it was waiting. As soon as the shield went up, it lashed out with a Feint. It surprised the Dragonite—so much that the protective barrier dissipated. Nearby, the Ambipom darted off.

Then several things happened at once. The Gengar cackled and with a twist of its body, made the fog even thicker than it was. A heavy haze fell over the field, obscuring things further. The dragon lady, since this was her arena, could still mostly tell what was going on if she focused. She was connected to this coliseum, and its energies fed through her. Her mind could see; she didn't need her eyes necessarily.

Several Pokemon were startled at this new development, as the silvery mist made it almost impossible to see. Most of them lost what power they had been gathering, like it was wiped away entirely.

Coated in the haze, the Ambipom used it to its advantage and popped out behind the Dragonite. Too late, it turned, only to receive a solid icy punch to its stomach. The monkey crowed as the dragon went down, crashing to the sands.

The Garchomp, then, suddenly appeared out of the fog like the shark it was. This time, it was behind the Gengar. The small destruction of the substitute minutes before must not have been enough, and it was back to finish the job. However, due to the added thickness of the murk, it wasn't as powerful.

Then, the dice spirit felt more than saw the focused glint in the dragon's soul as it lashed out. The Gengar shrieked painfully, caught unaware as it had just finished its attack—a critical strike. The ghost tumbled to the ground for a moment, but it managed to get airborne again, just barely floating off the ground. It's eye was closed shut and the other one was squinting.

The dragon lady snapped her fingers in an “aww, snap” gesture that the ghost didn't go down. But that was okay. It might not last long now, damaged as it was.

The Serperior tried to unleash a hailstorm of whipping leaves at the Donphan, but the ground elephant was holding fast. She admired its tenacity. It refused to give in, enduring the attack for another turn again despite how the grass snake's Trainer called out for it to attack.

A few others tried to boost their defenses once again, already working on it before the haze increased. But then another silvery mist began coming from the Vaporeon, who had been sitting unnoticed in the corner up until that point. It added its own murk to the field, wiping away the boosts the latecomers tried to recover.

Slowly, the mist began to fade a bit, leaving the arena coated in the original fog that was still present.

Now she wondered—would the remaining few try to waste time bolstering their defenses again or would they be taken out first?

    Turn 8 Begins

It was amazing to her, sometimes, how very similar these events were. Despite the hundreds and thousands of battles she had overseen, they all played out the same.

It was tiring, sometimes. Maybe most of the time.

The dice spirit was getting more and more tired all the time.

As if responding to her thoughts, the arena trembled slightly. And maybe it was. This was her domain, after all. While she could not leave, this area was subject to her whims. There were some rules of course, while these official things happened—proper protocols and other regulations her unwilling sponsor reminded her enough about—but, she thought as she grinned, she could have a little fun too.

Then there was a shift in the atmosphere, toward a Pokemon that had gone undisturbed until now. The Pokemon seemed aware of it too, as the Mew's head flicked up. Its Trainer had a grim set to his jaw, but it wasn't of surprise, only grim acceptance of things that always eventually came.

All at once, the Fairy bird gathered shadowy energy to itself, firing it toward the legend. At the same time, the Gengar tried to swoop in. The substitute shattered with the force of the Togekiss' attack. Then, the ghost was there, in front of the Mew, reaching out an invisible tether of energy—something that would have been blocked by the protective sub had it still been there.

The dragon lady narrowed her eyes, glancing toward the Trainers of the two offenders. She felt the stones roll under her toes as the arena took in the events. She tilted her head, making the white strands of her hair fall across her shoulders. The dice spirit didn't know what the place was doing—that happened sometimes too. It made her grin. She couldn't wait.

The legend was jostled again by the earth rumbling—not her arena this time but the Donphan. The Mew's eyes narrowed being surrounded, so its feet kicked up in fire and it sprung off of the Gengar, using the flame-boosted charge to fly to another corner of the place. It looked hurt, however, and the spirit knew that the arena would probably claim it, and the others, soon.

The landshark came through the fog, eyes on the ghost to finish the job it had started. However, the Ambipom was also on the move, fists still coated with icy glaze from the dragon before. It didn't take much to conjure the energy again and strike out. The last dragon went down this time.

Slowly but surely, there were more battlers in the dugouts to the sides than still left in the sands. There was much more room to maneuver now, so conflict wasn't going to occur due to cramped space. Each move was going to be more calculated—in theory.

Until the arena started to move on its own.

    Turn 10 Begins

The dragon lady's toes slowed in their tapping on the stone in front of her, timed to the lull the battle seemed to be taking. While it had been gearing up before, it seemed to hit the doldrums, and the hype was falling off.

Suddenly, the shackles on her limbs seemed a lot heavier. It occurred to her that she was tired; more tired than she'd been in a long time.

These battles, they were all the same. And that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but the spirit was just over it. So repetitive, like history, weaving the same strands again and again like clockwork.

And ultimately, that would be how the rest of her existence played out, being stuck here in this arena. No matter the sunny fields and vast waters she observed through the viewing fog, when influencing moves in official matches, she couldn't leave here. She could never get out.

The dragon lady sighed. Sometimes even torturing the battlers ceased to be fun.

She watched with only mild interest as the Pokemon in the arena stirred again, propping her chin her her palm as she watched them move. The legendary Pokemon was attempting to recover its strength, but the two-tailed Ambipom got there first, slashing its way unhindered through the fog.

The Mew tried to hold on, but its Trainer gave it the signal, and it let itself collapse to the dirt. The Whimsicott from the dugouts appeared to take the two off the field. While some reactions of the Trainers to being knocked out were extreme, this one just seemed resigned. Just like she was, sometimes.

At the same time, the Serperior was also eying up the legend, but it was too late. Quickly, although weakened by some of the trickery going on, the Medicham struck out with an ice-covered fist. The grass snake let out a surprised yelp and then stopped for a minute. Soon after, it fell over, energy spent.

The Togekiss attempted another attack, this time aiming for Vaporeon, a Pokemon that had gone unnoticed this entire time. The dragon lady's ears perked up a little. Not once had it done something aggressive so far, unlike the other participants remaining on the field. At the sound of the incoming Air Slash, the Vaporeon ducked down behind its substitute, cowering out of sight. The attack sailed over both, causing a couple of shopkeepers in the stands to duck for cover as the gusts crashed into the wall.

Gengar got close to the Donphan this time, like it had a turn before, and tapped it on the shoulder. However, it wasn't an attacking gesture. Instead, the Donphan, despite being badly injured, seemed invigorated. It trumped its call before stomping the ground hard, sending large tremors into the earth. Instead of the whole building coming down, she felt the arena's magic modify the attack, making it targeted.

It lashed out toward the Vaporeon, and although the Water-type's skin had a sheen that meant it was tougher than normal—matched on the substitute—the protective beanie was still torn apart by the attack, leaving the Eeveelution bared to the rest of the battlers. For how long would it get away with being passive?

On the sidelines, the shops were beginning to close up. They weren't completely shut down yet, but soon there would be too few of participants left for business to be profitable—although here, in this place, that seemed like a non-issue anyway. More practically, there wouldn't be time for battlers to get things in between actions from other Pokemon. So isolated, they made too easy of a target.

At least it seemed to be winding down. It fit the mood that had fallen over the place. Hopefully it wouldn't be dragged out too much.

She had other battles to hax.

Apparently BMG lied to me when I checked PMs and it said I didn't have any.

Togekiss increases Speed. Stats have been updated.

Because of the late notice, you guys have roughly 24 hours to change moves if this affects your send.

    Turn 11 Begins

The fog swirled, but the dragon lady could see through it for the most part. Even with so few participants scattered across the field, they were still visible. They weren't even that far apart really, relatively. Some were still within striking distance.

Under her feet, she felt the arena shift slightly, as if it was getting impatient for this conflict to end. Strange. Maybe it had something to do with how close the battlers were standing. None of them were near the outer ring—which the shopkeepers probably were glad of, after the last fiasco of a Pokemon crashing into one of the stands.

Then, all at once, Pokemon began moving. The Donphan charged up and was preparing another strike against the Vaporeon, but this time the Eeveelution was aware of it. It wasn't going to be attacked twice. With a burst of speed its bulky state didn't seem capable of, it dashed over to the ground elephant and rushed it.

The attack, although fairly weak, was too much for the Donphan who was already on its last legs. It collapsed to the ground, spent after hanging on to its strength for so long. Its Trainer patted its side in praise. It had lasted almost to the end without doing much hiding behind energy boosts or substitutes, and that was quite a feat.

With the Donphan down, the Ambipom could finally unleash its attack. With one hand-tail poised in the air, it had been following the Vaporeon's movements, tracking its path while cackling with electricity. As soon as the Eeveeultion stopped, it called forth a thunderbolt from the murk, crashing down on the Water-type.

At the same time, the Gengar was attempting to gather the shadows into an orb, its vision looking ahead to Medicham. However, the Togekiss remaining swooped in before the ghost could move, blasting the fighter with a misty, pink blast. The Medicham, attempting to prepare a protective screen, was unprepared and couldn't dodge, even with the aid of the fog. It was blasted backward a few feet, knocked out cold.

The Gengar, seeing its target collapsed, was going to let the energy die. But the dice spirit had had enough of that. She was out for blood. She wanted action.

With a snap of her fingers, the attack became imbued with life once again, shooting off slightly against the ghost's will. It let out a sound of surprise as the Shadow Ball rushed forward, suddenly veering sharply in an arc.

It slammed into the Vaporeon, already hurt from the last attack. This one sent the fox mermaid down onto its belly, cringing. The dragon lady saw that the Pokemon was a little slower to recover from this one—Shadow Ball's crippling effect must've taken hold. That meant that attacks with a similar energy were going to hurt the target more than normal. The formerly inconspicuous Pokemon was now being assaulted.

With so many participants now out of action, the shopkeepers on the sidelines were starting to pack up. One by one, the dragon lady watched their stands fold and disappear into the void, the imps and creatures running them evaporating in a cloud of colored smoke, laughing as they went.

They must've seen that there would be no more profit to be had. Suited the dragon lady just fine.

As would the end of this.

    Turn 15 Begins

With only four battlers remaining, the conflict seemed to slow down drastically. What should have been a mad dash to end the skirmish became a cautious dance of being on guard and trying to boost strength unnoticed.

But nobody went unnoticed now. Not in the nearly empty arena.

The fairy bird had its eye on the ghost next. Still bursting with excess energy, it gathered shadows to itself and launched them at the Gengar. Panicking, the ghost threw up a protective shield, but it turned out not to be necessary. Hastily attacking meant the Togekiss' aim was a little off, and so the Shadow Ball flew past the ghost and into the side of the arena, crashing with the massive force, kicking up dirt and dust and rumbling the place.

The Ambipom, taking advantage of the distraction, began to plot deviously, cooking up a game plan for which targets it would hit next. The Vaporeon thought the same and made a wish, asking for the restoration of its energy—the power of the arena may or may not grant it.

The Gengar could do no such thing. Its attacker was relentless. Already it was charging up another shot. Gengar looked back at its Trainer for some guideance, knowing it couldn't do much. Its Trainer tried to call out to the controller of the Togekiss, pleading for him to halt the bird's attack. But his calls went unanswered.

With a shrill call, another Shadow Ball was launched in the ghost's direction, and this time, there was no protective shield nor obstruction from the fog. The attack connected with the ghost, sending it flying into the wall. When the dust cleared, the Gengar slumped down to the floor, no longer having enough strength to even levitate. Its Trainer motioned a “dang it” and helped his Pokemon off the field and into the dugouts with the others.

The Ambipom continued to plan despite the motions going on around it, seemingly safe behind its cotton plus barrier. The Vaporeon took advantage of this though, rushing close and letting out a bellow that the dragon lady rose her eyebrows at.

The sound waves bypassed the substitute completely and bowled into the monkey, sending it toppling. It seemed to barely notice, so caught up in its plotting.

The dice spirit shifted almost impatiently. The battlers weren't the only ones getting tired. And although theoretically she never quit, it occurred to her that she wouldn't mind a little quiet. It was mostly quiet here normally, unless a battle from the other world was being broadcast through her cloudy mirrors. Very rarely did much ruckus happen in the arena, except for times like these.

And although she loved tormenting them, she wasn't quite sure she wanted them in her territory any longer. Under her feet, the arena shifted, as if responding to her thoughts. Looked like the terrain thought much the same.

It surprised her when the kidnapped Venusaur and Nidoking reappeared in the center of the arena—she knew what it meant, but it hadn't been necessary for a while. She thought everyone had got with the program by this point.

However, the Ambipom was too caught up in thinking and not doing. As the two chained Pokemon used their strength to open the chasm, the ghastly tethers came up to wrap around the monkey and its Trainer, dragging them off into the abyss. That only left two on the field.

The Togekiss came soaring up to the Water-type, letting out a call as vines emerged from the ground, snapping upward as they attacked. The Vaporeon didn't sit idly by however, even though many probably predicted it to go on the defensive. Instead, it let out another bellow that pushed the Togekiss back.

That didn't stop the bird, though. It shot forward again, calling up more vines to ensnare the Vaproeon. They wrapped around the Pokemon and sapped its strength. It was about to attack again but couldn't find the strength. It collapsed in the dirt, leaving the Togekiss as the only Pokemon left standing. It was over.

The dragon lady got up and slowly clapped her hands as everything else went quiet. Those in the dugout watched her. But she didn't even feel like torturing them more.

She remembered the last time, when she considered keeping them all here forever, making them her slaves. But her other counterpart, the one anchored to the real world, had told her no. And so she must obey. At least in that. But she didn't even want to anymore.

“This time you are free to go,” she told them. “Now begone.”

With a snap of her fingers, eerie smoke enveloped all the battlers and their Pokemon—even those who had been carted off into the darkness. It swallowed them up, shining bright blue before the smoke dissipated among the fog. When it cleared, the battlers were gone, sent back to their own world.

With a sigh, she sat down on her stone throne, her own chains rattling around her ankles. The Espeon, still present, looked at her curiously.

She glared at him, and with a wave of her hand, sent him away too.

She was the only one who remained. For better or worse. Here she was destined to stay.
