I always loved Dewford Town. It reminded me of home, and sometimes, I missed home. I missed being able to go to the beach that was only twenty minutes away and breathing in the salt water from the ocean.

Unfortunately, I wasn't here to breath in the salt water and stick my feet in the warm sand. I was here to be the referee for a Dewford gym battle, so I had to make the trip from my home in Fortree City to here. It wasn't a long trip. My Charizard got me here within an hour, so it wasn't too bad. I walked into the dimly lit gym, promising myself that as soon as this battle was over, I would be sticking my feet in the sand and breathing in that salt water.

The challenger and the gym leader were waiting for me when I arrived. I took my position in the center of the battlefield. The rules had been sent to me on my phone, and I was able to review those while flying here. "Alright, you two! This is a Dewford gym challenge! You can each send up to four non-legendary Pokemon, and they cannot be holding any items!" A fog started to settle over the battlefield as I spoke. "There will be foggy weather, and your terrain is the standard building terrain. The clauses are the usual: Accuracy, Evasion, OHKO, Sleep, and Freeze, and note that Species clause is on too."

I held up one hand towards the challenger. "Our challenger today is The Artist...!" I lowered that hand and raised the other towards the leader. "He will be challenging Dewford Town's gym leader, VoltChen Magneton! Best of luck to both battlers!" I turned to the challenger. "Challenger sends first."

The Artist... sent a large purple ghost out, with bright red eyes that shone in the fog, not that I needed the Gengar's eyes to see him; the fog wasn't thick enough to where I couldn't see anything. It would hinder the Pokemon battling more than anything else. My attention went to the leader. He sent out a Gallade.

The first moves were sent out right after, and Gallade disappeared into the shadows. Gengar was confused, looking around for the Gallade who suddenly popped up out of nowhere. Gengar was quick to react though and dodged the incoming Shadow Sneak. He then retaliated by coughing up a ball of purple sludge that hit the Gallade and drenched his body in it. The sludge bubbled up and while much of it ended up on the floor of the gym, it stuck to the Gallade's body too. Gallade winced in pain as the sludge bubbled up.

No sooner had the previous moves been done, the next ones were flying out. These battlers seemed like they had a plan in mind.

Still, the fog continued to cover the battlefield. Gengar struck first, releasing a powerful pulse of light purple energy that struck the Gallade. It hurt him a lot more than it normally would have because of the sludge that stuck to his body. While Gallade was visibly injured and didn't have a whole lot of fight left in him, he still moved forward. As he moved, one of his blade arms took on a dark aura. He slashed at the Gengar and hit the Ghost type. That too did a fair chunk of damage to Gengar, but he had more fight in him.

And he certainly had a lot more fight in him than the Gallade. The sludge on his body bubbled up again and made Gallade wince in pain. That pain was too much for Gallade though as he collapsed onto the ground, no longer able to battle. I turned to the leader. "Your next Pokemon?"

At least the fog didn't hurt anything this round.

"Go, Hawlucha!" the leader called out. The colorful, fighting bird appeared on the battlefield, covered by the fog.

I frowned a little. Right when the poor guy had sent out his next Pokemon too... "Mistake made on my behalf, apologies!" I called out, still frowning. Of course I would make a mistake. Nothing new here. "Gengar's Hex was what KO'd Gallade, not the toxic poison it was affected with." I turned to the leader. "You can change your send if you'd like."

"Same send," the leader told me. "Hawlucha, use Acrobatics!"

"Gengar, Icy Wind!" The Artist... told his Pokemon.

Dewford's leader had an advantage this time around: his Hawlucha was just a bit faster than The Artist...'s Gengar. The Fighting and Flying type flew up into the air and did a fair few flips, twists, and turns before slamming his body into Gengar. The Ghost type retaliated by breathing out a cool burst of air that even made me shiver. Icicles hung off of Hawlucha's body as he flew back to his trainer. While the temperature had noticeably dropped in the arena, it wasn't nearly enough to keep the icicles on Hawlucha's body, as they had mostly melted off by the time he was back to his trainer.

"Thunderbolt!" The Artist... called out to his Gengar. The Ghost type began to gather electrical energy between his hands. I could feel my hair starting to stand up as the Gengar charged the energy; I reached a hand back to flatten it out. I really did not feel like having a bad hair day today.

"Hawlucha, come back!" the leader called out, holding out a red and white capsule that would hold his Pokemon. Just as soon as the colorful Fighting type had been released, it was being returned back into his Poke Ball. "Go, Lucario!"

The human-like Pokemon materialized on the field just in time to take a Thunderbolt to the face. Lucario flinched at the move, probably because he hadn't expected to take a hit so soon after entering battle, but other than that, he was okay. No electrical sparks flew from his body, so there were no signs of Paralysis, which would likely please Dewford's leader, VoltChen. The switch game was strong with the leader though. Perhaps he was playing some mind games with his opponent. I could only wait and see what would happen next.

"Lucario, go for a Psychic!" VoltChen told his Pokemon.

"Focus Blast!" The Artist... commanded. I could sense two hopeful trainers here. VoltChen with the hope that Focus Blast would become Focus Miss and not hit his precious Lucario. The Artist... held onto the hope that Focus Blast would not become Focus Miss and actually hit the intended target. Speaking of The Artist..., he had come over to me and whispered something to me. "If you roll a sixty-three or less, I will bake you a cake."

He went back to his position after that, just in time to see his Pokemon charge up the move. Luckily for him, I carried around a hundred sided dice with me. They were standard issue for new refs. I owned mine for just over two years now. They were a little worn because of all the reffing I've done over the years, but they were still good. They still worked. I rolled the dice, just for fun, just as Gengar launched his Focus Blast at the Lucario, who was preparing his own attack with the hopes that Focus Blast would miss. While the temptation of cake was a good one, I wasn't influenced by it. I was an unbiased ref. That said, I also wasn't one to pass up on free cake if it was offered to me.

The dice landed on a forty-seven.

Focus Blast hit Lucario. Lucario fell to the ground, knocked out.

I picked my dice back up and pocketed it. I nodded to The Artist.... He owed me cake now. I then turned to VoltChen. "Your next Pokemon?"
