[Dewford Gym] VoltChen Magneton vs. The Artist

"Hawlucha, come on back out!" VoltChen announced. The colorful luchador returned to the field, injured, but ready to fight.

"Shadow Sneak!" The Artist... told his Pokemon.

VoltChen pondered his options for a moment as the Gengar disappeared into the shadows. Shadow Sneak would allow Gengar to strike first, and even though that gave the leader more of a chance to determine his course of action, Hawlucha still had to do something. The leader had almost called out Encore to his Pokemon, but his final choice was "Acrobatics!"

Gengar came out of the shadows and struck Hawlucha just as the command escaped VoltChen's mouth. Hawlucha was hurt by the attack, but he took it well. Flying up in the air and flipping in the air to land on the Ghost type, Hawlucha knocked the Gengar to the ground. Gengar made no motion of getting up.

"Gengar is knocked out," I declared, turning to The Artist.... "Your next Pokemon?"

The beach sounded so wonderful right now. Being able to swim with the Water type Pokemon would be such a joy. It had been some time since I last went swimming, but it was one of those skills you didn't really forget, even if you didn't practice it regularly.

"Jolteon, come out and use Thunderbolt!" The Artist... called out as he tossed a Poke Ball into the air; his voice broke me out of my daydreaming. The spiky electric dog materialized on the field, already charging electrical energy around its body.

"Hawlucha, U-turn!" VoltChen cried out. I could hear the desperation in his voice. Unfortunately, Hawlucha was too slow to react this time around as it took a Thunderbolt to the face and was struck down by the attack.

"Hawlucha is knocked out," I declared, my eyes on the unconscious Pokemon. My eyes moved to Dewford's leader as I spoke to him. "Your final Pokemon?"

Dewford's leader took a moment to think, his hands running over the Poke Balls on his belt. This was his final send, so it was understandable. If he wanted to make a comeback, he would have to pick his final Pokemon a good one. Something that could handle the Jolteon that The Artist... had sent out not long ago, plus the two other unsent Pokemon he had going for him. VoltChen took a Poke Ball off of his belt and tossed it up into the air.

"Go, Chesnaught!" he announced as the white light from the Poke Ball formed into a bipedal turtle Pokemon.

The Artist... seemed undeterred by the new arrival to the playing field, but he had no reason to be afraid. Only his Gengar had fallen, and Jolteon was still healthy. Even if Jolteon fell, he had two more Pokemon to fall back on. The challenger announced his move. "Yawn."

His opponent, the gym leader, hesitated for a moment. He had to take a moment to think about what to do here. It took him a moment, but he called out a move. "Mud Shot!"

Jolteon yawned, shifting slightly in his position. A large white cloud escaped his mouth as he closed it. That very same cloud collided with Chesnaught, making him let out a yawn of his own. This yawn didn't produce a white cloud like Jolteon's had just a moment ago, but it was enough to make Chesnaught sleepy. Chesnaught opened his mouth again, not to yawn but to release a blob of mud from its mouth. Because of his drowsiness, however, he was a little slow in releasing the Mud Shot he had been commanded to do and Jolteon was able to move before it came into contact with him.

Chesnaught yawned again, apparently not bothered by the fact that his attack had just missed. Fog continued to cover the battlefield.

As the minutes passed in between rounds, Chesnaught continued to yawn.

"Jolteon, come back!" The Artist... called out, returning his electric dog to his Poke Ball. He took out a second Poke Ball and tossed it into the air. "Go, Crobat!"

The electric dog was replaced by a purple bat whose legs and wings were bigger than its small, pill-like body. Chesnaught seemed undeterred by the new arrival to the battlefield, but he did yawn again.

"Mud Shot!" VoltChen commanded.

Unfortunately for him, however, the attack wouldn't do anything if it hit. Chesnaught coughed out another ball of mud that was shot towards the Crobat. It landed just below the bat. It seemed as if it would have hit had it not been for Crobat's immunity to Ground type moves.

The effects of Yawn took over once the failed attack landed on the ground. Chesnaught laid down on the ground, pulling his arms and legs into his shell as best as he could. His head remained out, but it drooped down as his eyes closed. Chesnaught fell asleep.

Chesnaught showed no signs of moving, even as The Artist... called out what he believed to be his final move. "Finish it up with Acrobatics!"

VoltChen frowned. He was going to lose this battle if that Acrobatics hit. Still, as Crobat flipped in the air towards the sleeping Chesnaught, the leader hoped for the best. "Mud Shot!"

It was unlikely his Chesnaught would wake up, and even as the trainers shouted their commands, the Grass and Fighting type still showed no signs of moving. Crobat's body slammed into the sleeping Chesnaught's. The sleeping Pokemon cried out in pain, but instead of being woken up by the attack, he was knocked out.

"VoltChen Magneton has no more usable Pokemon!" I called out. "The Artist... wins!"

I took a small red book out of my pocket and flipped through it until I found Dewford's gym. A recent change in battle payments left me memorizing a new set of payments that I had yet to actually memorize. I nodded once I got the winnings stuck in my head for a moment, closed the book, and put it back in my pocket once more. "The winner of this battle, The Artist..., will receive $3000, TM Drain Punch, and the Knuckle Badge! The loser, VoltChen Magneton, will receive $1000!"

I nodded to both battlers. "Good game, both of you!" I told them. "It was a pleasure to be your ref today!"

And now I could go relax on the beaches of Dewford Town, just as I'd wanted to do from the moment I arrived.
