And so the dice decided...

Turn 24 Start​

For a time, nothing had happened. The dragon lady yawned and examined the jagged points of her fingernails, sighing dramatically when all the Pokemon would only boost their attacking prowess or bolster their defenses.

Eventually, though, Pokemon were picked off one by one. Curiously, there seemed to be some coordination among the masses. A truce? That was interesting. It made the demon grin. When only seven battlers were remaining, the shops on the sidelines closed, offering no new techniques for the participants.

All three banners stayed flying until only four remained. The lone Gallade from the Petalburg kingdom faced three foes alone. Knowing there was nothing left to do, the warrior let time expire. The chained Venusaur dragged the fighter off into the nether.

The demon grinned. As the rest tried to pile the Gallade, their attacks turned on each other, exploding each others protective substitutes.

With only three remaining, the Infernape didn't stand a chance as the other two attacked it. Then, only Mr. Mime and another Gallade were left standing, waving the Crossroads and Bulbagarden banners.

Both were quite evenly matched, gathering energy as they prepared for one final assault.

“Wait a moment!” the demon cried, vanishing in a cloud of icy smoke and reappearing on the battle field. “In true fighting spirit, let's let luck decide this, hmm?”

She held out a clawed hand and in her palm appeared a coin. On one side, an image of her represented heads, engraved with long hair and her looking mostly human. She flipped it over to show them the other side. The tails version sported horns and sharp fangs.

“As you two are evenly matched, I think a flip is in order. Heads will be you,” she said as she pointed a long nail at the Mr. Mime. “And tails will be you,” she added, pointing to the Gallade.

“May luck determine the victor.”

Then, she threw the coin up, and all the battlers watched it spin. It took its time, twirling through the air as it flew upward, slowed, then began its descent. It hit the ground with a puff of dirt on the sandy arena floor. As the demon lady looked over, she grinned. She didn't care who the victor was—this was all just a game.

“Tails!” she cried.

Mr. Mime, not willing to just give up, swept its hands to the side and flashed them forward as a pinkish energy blasted toward the Gallade. He was quick to act, throwing up his arms in an X to defend himself. Mr. Mime could not amass enough energy to break through it.

Then, with a flourish, the Gallade drew both of his arms back. A flurry of leaves rushed around them, crackling and whistling with the wind. With a grunt of effort, the fighter ran forward and slashed with both.

For a second, everything was quiet as the warrior stayed in his lunge. Then, Mr. Mime fell to the sand. The Gallade had won.

The dragon lady suddenly started cackling, closing her eyes and whipping her head back. The arena cowered at the tone. That didn't sound good.

“Let them go.”

The spirit of the dice abruptly halted her laughing and turned to glare at Winter, who had come down from the stands. The Espeon stood beside her, free from his chains.

“And why, my dear, would I do that?” She gave them all a wicked smile.

“Because they won. They played your game and came out of it. Even if this is your game, there are still rules, and they followed them,” Winter said flatly, giving her own glare back to the dice.

“So what,” the demon said as she scoffed, flicking her white hair behind her shoulder. “I make the rules here! I can change them if I want!”

“I don't think so.”

Suddenly, a loose wind began to circle the referee. A pair of dice appeared in her hands. She held them up and the demon suddenly paled.

“No! I won't go back. I won't! This is my arena. Mine!”

Winter shook her head. “That's too bad. I think you've caused enough trouble.”

The demon abruptly tried to disappear, but thick, icy chains sprouted from the ground like plants, wrapping around the dragon lady as she thrashed. Soon after, she stilled, knowing it was no use. She couldn't escape the dice prison from which she was born.

As the referee walked up to her, the demon sighed deeply. She offered the other woman a smile. “I guess I'll see you on the next one then. I bet they'll be happy to see me.”

Winter shook her head but couldn't repress a smile. Yeah, they'd definitely be happy to see her. Then, she touched the dice to the demon's forehead, and the spirit faded into the objects. The dots glowed for a second with icy light and then faded away.

In ref mode, Winter turned to the Gallade. “The victor!”

Now everyone could go home safely.

Turn 24:
