    Ranger Makina Auran

    *~~~~~~~~~*

Siless gave a nod in reply, confirming the Trainer's hunch about Espurr having an evolution. “Let's go find who it is. I have a good feeling about what this could be...”

Good to see he's in a good mood about this, Makina mused, seeing Siless's positive reaction. Blindly going after a new Pokemon could make more than a few Trainers apprehensive, especially if they had now idea just what said Pokemon could do. While all Rangers and staff were doing their best to document everything they saw on these new Kalos creatures and what their normal behavior appeared to be, there was still a lot left in the dark on most of them. Espurr was one of such, due to avoiding most of the locals.

Taking care to keep an eye out for any Pokemon that could ambush them, the two humans and Gardevoir made their way to the cave. In the past, they likely would have run into a Ghost Pokemon skulking about near the entrance. With the discovery of the Ruined Manor though, most of the specters had migrated to the abandoned house as their home. Yet another strange occurrence in the Park.

Out of habit, Aria summoned a couple motes of fire to light their way. The violet-colored motes slowly circled about, illuminating the cave just enough for them to look about. The cave was not much bigger on the inside, being roughly fifty feet in length and eight feet high. The interior looked eerily empty, as if its occupants had left recently or nothing wished to live in here.

What was even stranger was the Pokemon that had greeted them. A short feline creature was staring straight at them. Not a hint of emotion could be seen in its large green eyes, and not a single strand of its cobalt blue fur was out of place. All in all, it could almost be mistaken as a statue if it wasn't for the fact that its chest was slightly moving as the Pokemon breathed and both Gardevoir had their full attention on the Psychic-type.

<It's almost like talking to a drone,> Aria remarked, sounding a little unsettled. <He's telling us to leave, just like the old residents here.>

This was the home of another Family of Pokemon other than Ghosts? Makina replied. She couldn't see something like a Sableye or Gengar shirking away from a Psychic, no matter how disturbing it was.

<A family of Abra, apparently. Either way, he just does not want anyone else around for some reason.>

Makina looked over at Siless, knowing that Sela was likely repeating the same to him. “It's your call. Should we leave it be, or want to try convincing it to think otherwise?”

Did... did Meowstic scare away the old inhabitants? Or is something else going on...?”

The blue cat standing before us honestly was kinda creeping me out. It just... didn't seem likely that a single Meowstic could scare away a family of Abra, especially if there were any evolved forms amongst the group. Meowstic, while a tricky combatant, wasn't very powerful compared to more offensive-oriented Pokémon (even Abra outclassed it in Special Attack, though that evolutionary family is nearly iconic for the stat).

Just seemed to me that something was off. Either this Meowstic is extraordinary, or something else is happening. If the first, he's probably going to be causing more problems if he's ejecting families, and if the latter? Maybe we could find something to go off of if we can find something out about Meowstic.

I focused my thoughts towards Sela. Can you question Meowstic and see what's going on? It seems weird that... well, anything would work to displace a bunch of Abra... The Meowstic's gaze seemed to pierce my very soul, bringing another thought up. See if you can find out if anything is manipulating Meowstic, but be subtle about it.

Sela began communicating to the cat standing before us, both with her voice and with the telepathy that seemed to be in nearly every Psychic-type Pokémon in various forms. Bits and pieces of Sela's thoughts entered my mind, though since she wasn't actively sending them to me I couldn't understand the full message. Something about friends and illusions and... I was pretty sure she was trying to get Meowstic to warm up to us. With his 'greeting', I wasn't exactly sure how well that would work, but she'd certainly be better at it than I would.

“I guess it's a good thing we were nearby,” I said, mostly to myself. A bird-like Pokemon lazily flapped its strange multihued, flying near my head as we trekked to a nearby cave. The bird was rainbow-colored and its head was a bizarre shape, with its neck and head stiffly pointing straight up. A large eye dominated most of its head, while its beak took up the rest of the space. It had eyemarks on what could be considered its belly, making it somewhat disorienting for people to look at for long periods of time.

=Perhaps,= came a liquid, soothing voice. The Pokemon was a Sigilyph, an ancient breed of Pokemon and one who wasn't exactly mine. Like Urokei the Salamence, Regalia (as he was named) was one of Trainer's Pokemon that I had ended up borrowing before life had suddenly set us on different paths. It was a bit awkward, not having the chance to return the other's Pokemon to her in so long. Luckily, her Pokemon were all relatively easy-going and knew me well enough to not go running off or ignore my wishes.

“Does your enthusiasm have anything to do with that odd spike in Psychic energy you picked up on earlier?” Perhaps an hour ago, Regalia had sensed a massive pulse of Psychic energy in the area. It had been brief and violent, but from what the Sigilyph could tell, it hadn't been directed at anything. It was actually why we'd been heading this way, though, but then a call had gone out to all on-duty Rangers about a run in the area that needed to be taken over. Since we were already heading out that direction, I'd called in to say I'd take over. It was the third Ranger I would be escorting since my return to activity in the Park, and it was getting a little weird to only be leading fellow Rangers and not regular Trainers.

=I simply want to make sure there were no unintended victims of such a release,= Regalia replied in that strange voice of his. It was like someone pouring pure gold over my brain every time he spoke. =It was over quickly, yes, but such power could injure any too near regardless of how fleeting.= I didn't argue; the Psychic knew his own Type better than I did, and understood the repercussions better as well. In the distance I spotted a small cave, which according to the GPS information I'd gotten from Siless' current Ranger was their location. It was also where the strange Psychic pulse had come from. I frowned a bit; lately, Rangers I'd been escorting had been having rather...interesting runs, to say the least. It felt like this was going to keep that streak going.

We reached the cave maybe fifteen minutes later, at which point I greeted Makina. She and her Gardevoir then departed; apparently it was something to do with an urgent issue involving her Gym or something. Regalia formed a few spheres of light, which were placed in a wide circle above our heads to cast suitable illumination for us. It was then that I saw what was currently taking place. Another Gardevoir, this one most likely Siless', was talking to a cobalt-furred bidpeal feline with pale green eyes. They weren't physically talking, but were having a telepathic conversation, something Regalia kindly shared with me. I felt a strange sensation over our mental link as he listened, though. It was...concern, bordering on aggression.

=Something is wrong with this one,= he said after a moment. =His mind is...not right. It is as though it were broken, and the pieces then put back together in the wrong order by a child using too much glue. There is no doubt he was caught in the release of power. But he is radiating a sort of energy that is making it impossible to sense anything but himself, so if the culprit is still around, I cannot sense them. He keeps repeating himself, as well, over and over. He is simply saying leave. It would appear there was a family of Abra that were living here, only to be chased off. Most likely by the one who left this poor creature in his current state.= Regalia paused for a few moments as the silent discussion between Meowstic and Gardevoir continued.

=This Gardevoir is trying to convince him that no harm is intended, that they wish only to find new friends and teammates. But his broken mind is unable to comprehend anything beyond the fact that we are possible threats. He is exuding an anger, softly bubbling but ready to froth over. He is mad that we are here and wants us to go, and is incapable of being reasoned with.=

Regalia had just finished speaking when Meowstic's eyes narrowed. Just a bit, barely noticeable in the gloom of the cave. That was all the warning that was given before an invisible force hit us all, not enough to hurt but strong enough to force us back several paces or risk being knocked over. I scowled as the cat continued to simply stand there, immobile, not even blinking.

“Seems like he really wants us to get going,” I said. “Looks like if you're interested in catching this one, you're going to have to fight for it. Hi, by the way. I'm Arunei. I don't think we've ever actually met formally.”

Makina disappeared, appearing to have to leave for something, though a replacement ranger that identified herself as Arunei showed up as she was leaving. I acknowledged her with a “Nice to meet you,” but with the strange circumstances before us there wasn't really time for much more. Proper introductions would have to wait for later. Meowstic had already lashed out, it seemed, and though it was just a push now, it appeared to have forced out a family of Pokémon already, and it wouldn't surprise me to see it become more of a threat to anything that intruded later.

Meowstic is broken, Sela told me. Its mind is all shattered and muddled. But, and at this, she couldn't help but smirk, I think we can fix him. But it will take time and psychic therapy, and on this run we have neither.

We also can't let it just sit here and be a threat to the natives like it's been so far.”

    Exactly.

With Meowstic established as an opponent and a threat, Sela began to probe for an ability to copy. This adaptability of hers was strong, and though she was forced to have the copied ability for the remainder of the battle, because it was Meowstic we were fighting we didn't have to worry about an ability like Defeatist or Rivalry that would hurt Sela more than it would help.

Sela, get behind Meowstic with Teleport.” I began to focus my thoughts towards her to hide the next part of my plan; I didn't know if Meowstic had telepathic abilities like many Psychic-types did, but I doubted this one could use them either way in its mental state. Try to disrupt his though processes with a Heal Pulse to the head.

Sela questioned me back. Do you think the Heal Pulse would help fix Meowstic?

I don't know. I think there's a chance that it will do something, and I think that chance is worth taking. Sela nodded at the comment. Try to hit the head as best as you can though. If anything improves the chances of it working at all, it would be that.

The telepathic conversation felt like it lasted only an instant, and it was only an instant later that Sela began to glow a psychic blue aura. It seems the start of the battle was underway.

    @Siless; Which gender?

    BP #1

A time portal opened up out of thin air, and out from it I appeared. Well, actually I just liked to believe it was a time portal, when in actuality it was just a very big cardboard box.

"Hello? Is this 1965? I need to purchase a cheap new car."

Upon looking at my surroundings, namely seeing what appeared to be a trainer, and two Pokemon, I gathered that this was not 1965, and most likely was the National Park.

"Well, uh...this is awkward. I suppose you need a ranger, seeing as how you're kind of all alone. Since I'm here I will help out," I said to the trainer that I think I recognized as Siless, while I threw my Gardevoir's Pokeball into the air.

"Now then, let's see what's going on based on these sheets that I just happen to randomly have about your run. Hmm, you had two rangers, both who vanished into thin air. Ha, sounds like the work of more time portals. And apparently you're facing a Meowstic who had an issue?"

I took a moment to pause, and gaze over at the Pokemon, realizing what must have of course happened.

"That Meowstic was no doubt hit with a powerful Mind Crush. This can only be the work of Yami Yugi. Yes I recognize his handy work from when he did one to Kaiba, and then to Panik later on killing him. It was so extreme for TV that he must have been forbidden from doing it again, as I don't recall any sort of a Mind Crush from him after that. Oh he was a tricky devil, but as far as I know," as I continued to ramble on a senile old man, my Gardevoir turned to Siless and sent him a telepathic message.

I'm sorry, you'll have to forgive him. Sometimes Eric just...yeah, he's nuts.

"I'll need to think of a strategy to combat Yami Yugi in the event he shows up again. Siless you do your battle while I think.

To the best of my knowledge, as I was busy looking at cards, Siless' Gardevoir Teleported behind the Meowstic, and hit it with a Heal Pulse, restoring it, and making it better than it currently was.

As the beginning of the battle was taking place, I continued sitting and planning.

"Hmm, maybe fusing three Blue-Eyes White Dragon's together would work. I feel like that would work."

At this point my own Gardevoir started feeding me the information of what was happening. Apparently after the Heal Pulse attack, Meowstic smiled, showing its sign of thanks, and seemed like it wanted to join Siless team, however it didn't want to just go quietly to return the favor. It used a Torment, not to get to Gardevoir, but so she wouldn't use another Heal Pulse or anything, because it seemed to want a fair fight now to give Siless his chance at catching it. Though after finding Meowstic in the state it was in, he probably wouldn't have to throw as many attacks as usual at it to weaken the creature enough.

@Ebail; yay first post in forever. and Male pls (also, yay copy-pasting this removed a ton of spaces between words whyyy)

Well... this was, to put it lightly, shenanigans. Another new ranger had shown up, this one going on about Yami Yugi and TV and card games. If it weren't for his Gardevoir confirming that he was nuts, it might've convinced me he thought these things were real. Which I guess would have confirmed he was nuts anyways, barring a massive platinum dragon coming from the cards he was debating to. If that happened? I don't know, though I'm sure both Sela and I would be going to therapy to find out.

Meowstic seemed to get some semblance of normalcy from Sela's Heal Pulse. This was fantastic in terms of his mental health, as all signs pointed to the damage not being permanent. Still, continued therapy was probably helpful, and having Meowstic join me would probably be the best way of administering it. On this point, Meowstic seemed more than willing, though not without the time-honored tradition of testing the Trainer's skill and strength in battle. I couldn't tell whether it was to test me, to learn more of me, or simply to remove excess energy from the Heal Pulse, though one thing was certain; Meowstic was ready to battle, having performed a first 'strike' to signify the start of the match with a Torment. It was a sign of wanting to battle, and I suppose also a sign of 'I'm alright, don't worry for now, don't use Heal Pulse again', so it was time to get down to business.

Sela accepted the Torment from Meowstic; it didn't particularly frustrate her, but we both knew it would make consecutive identical attacks near impossible, so it was best to not even try. At the moment, that simply cut off Heal Pulse, though it wouldn't be long before it cut off moves that were actually helpful in battle. Thankfully Sela held a wide movepool, and even if one attack was locked, chances were she held a similarly useful move to cycle in in its place.

Of the Meowstic species, males tended more towards status attacks, naturally learning more of them than their female counterparts, and at times being able to fling them faster than even the speediest of Pokémon. The most obvious counter I'm sure even Meowstic was aware of was a Taunt, restricting it to attack moves that the male of the species had comparatively little natural access to. This wasn't my plan, though, and it seemed better in my mind to 'reinforce' this Meowstic rather than 'restrict' him, even if it amounted to fairly similar effects in this battle.

"Sela, Encore that Torment!"All Torment could do now was be annoying, which in a battle is fairly ineffective.. until someone loses their cool. I can't say I expected Sela to do so. Meanwhile, Encore would make the Meowstic feel more positive, reinforce that Torment is a good move, ideally rendering him harmless for a short time while boosting his morale. Then Sela could put out some easy damage and we could go for a capture.

...It certainly was not going to be that easy, though it was worth a shot.

Sela clapped her hands once. Then twice. The clapping rose in intensity and speed. Each clap sent a surge of energy through the room, a positive burst that made me feel I could do anything, that made me feel I could do what I just did, even better than before. Thankfully, I was just commanding, and I wasn't about to attempt to spew fire from my mouth or, in Meowstic's position, harass my opponent in a way they're already dealing with. Whether Meowstic would actually try again would be up to him, though Sela's Encore wouldn't, or at least shouldn't, make it easy to say no. Still, I braced myself for the worst, and started preparing an offensive plan in case Encore didn't work out.

    @Siless;

    BP #2

"Man it is awfully dreary in here. Where is that light switch...ah here we go," I said as I felt around for the switch so I could turn on the lights. No sense battling in some relatively dark conditions. Also I couldn't see any of my children's card game planning.

Whilst I was back to sitting minding my own business, I could overhear some planning going on. Well, not really, as Siless and his Gardevoir weren't talking much, and I didn't understand Meowstic. Didn't matter that much though, because eventually attacks were bound to happen so I could just simply see what was going to unfold.

I sat here for a good five minutes, before I finally heard a command yelled out by Siless.

    "Sela, Encore that Torment!"

Encore was certainly a pesky move. It would force the opposing Pokemon to reuse the last move used by it, essentially making it a one sided battle if there was no one else to swap in, or giving a free set up turn in the process.

Meowstic wasn't going to allow free shots to happen so easily though, the way my own Gardevoir relayed its thoughts to me was making it seem like he was very grateful about being healed, but if he wanted to go down so easily he'd have just let himself be captured right after being healed.

Meowstic defended against the Encore by raising up a Protect to stop it from working, and then right after just jumped right at Gardevoir and used a simple Scratch attack, kinda seeming like a "get serious" message.

I turned my head towards the battle after getting the information Gardevoir was letting me in on.

"Hey I think this Meowstic wants a full fledged fight. It seems like he wants to show off what he can truly do here. But maybe that's just my understanding of it."

Pokemon sure were unusual creatures at times. Some enjoyed a good battle, while others preferred being on the sidelines and playing tricks. Others just wanted to have fun.

Maybe this Meowstic wasn't hit by a Mind Crush, maybe we just found it so weakened because it was just having a series of long battles to test its strength, who knows, I thought to myself, slowly showing Siless that wasn't quite crazy, and that I just told Gardevoir to play along because I'm fun that way. Regardless I was interested to see what Siless was going to do next.

Encore did a grand total of nothing, not even making Meowstic feel better. Apparently, the cat was just exhausted to the point of temporary insanity rather than actually damaged mentally, and not only that, he was a battler. He wanted a full-on fight, rather than an exchange of non-combat moves, and it seems it was time to oblige.

"Sela, use- ..what?" Suddenly, the lights burst into brightness... wait, lights? I thought we were in a cave? I supposed it could have had some light installations installed somehow, but before I was fairly certain it was an all-natural cave. It seemed I was less aware of the situation than I thought... Either way, we had a battle to do, and all the lights did was make it easier to see. It didn't seem that there was anything else such as a sprinkler system to take advantage of, so any electrical assistance I get would be minimal without taking out the lights.

The cave itself was still a cave, however, and there were plenty of loose rocks scattered across the ground and, of course, plenty of dust. The cave itself seemed sturdy enough, which I guess supported why the cave was outfitted with electricity. Thankfully, this opened up a few options; while I wouldn't be able to use, say, an Earthquake without massive risk (not that I even could with my team), powerful attacks that weren't as damaging to the ground would be viable without risking all of our lives.

Meowstic was a small target, and its ears were a large part of its body. While these aided his psychic abilities, storing and releasing the energy strategically, they also proved to be a target. A quick bit of thinking (now that I wasn't as confused and distracted about the light fixtures anymore) led me to think of taking advantage of his ears with a sound-based attack, either making his ears react and lowering his psychic abilities, or just outright dealing damage (which is the major goal in a battle, of course).

"Alright.. Sela, Hyper Voice!" What better to attack ears than ear-splitting yelling? The sound waves would be powerful enough to drag along rocks and dirt, making the attack even harder to resist. The attack was directional, thankfully, but it didn't mean it wasn't loud. I dug a pack of earplugs out of my pocket, grabbed a pair for myself, and tossed the rest of the pack to Eric. I figured he may want it for what was about to happen, I know I did.

I continued to stand around while waiting for the battle between Gardevoir and Meowstic to continue going. Although I did have to admit I was mildly distracted every here and there by other stuff, but it was nothing major.

I turned my focus back over to the Pokemon, and couldn't help but wonder just what the deal with Meowstic was. I gave my Gardevoir a nod, and she read his mind in order to let me know what was going on.

It seems that he loves to fight. The reason he had been found in such a weakened state like he was was due to all of the fighting, but mostly because of the last foe he faced. Apparently they were too strong for the Meowstic to handle, but instead of knocking him out, they decided to show mercy and leave. Seems he likes a battle to go until one side can't keep going, though not permanently of course.

Ahh, well that makes a lot of sense then. Has a warriors spirit. That would explain why it seemed to dislike Encore being used so much last time. Well either way it seems Siless has made up his mind about what to do, so lets focus on that once more.

    "Alright.. Sela, Hyper Voice!"

After telling his Gardevoir what to do, he reached around into his pocket for what appeared to be a pair of earplugs and then tossed the rest of the pack to myself.

"Thanks, but I won't need these. I have my own. You wear them though, Gardevoir," I said, passing the pair over to her. I figured she would probably need them, because things were going to get rough.

Hyper Voice was a very loud shouting or screech like attack. The user would let out a powerful sound that would really be painful on the ears. It was best used by a Mega Gardevoir, though a standard one could make good use of it themself.

Gardevoir let out the shout and I could see it was definitely brutal, especially on a Pokemon like Meowstic with the ears it had. Of course I couldn't hear anything as I had music blasting through the headphones I had in, and so as such I had my back to the battle while I danced around.

My own Gardevoir fed me battle stats again, and she let me know that this Meowstic did not want to be outdone, and so it retaliated with its own sound based attack, using a Disarming Voice in the process of Gardevoir's move. A very different sound move, that wasn't as painful on the ears, and well didn't even hit Gardevoir too hard.

Meowstic wanted to show what it could do, and not let itself be shown up here. Though the battle already wasn't looking too good for it, as it was trying to catch its breath, while Gardevoir didn't look that scratched, I wouldn't count it out just yet.

Things were heavily muffled through the ear plugs, though that was far preferable to permanent ear damage should the Hyper Voice had gone wrong. Thankfully, the only one hurt was the Meowstic that wanted to battle in the first place. Meowstic seemed to take Sela's Hyper Voice as a challenge to his own abilities and countered with his own sound-based attack, a Disarming Voice.

Disarming Voice wasn't very powerful, but that never was the purpose of the move; it was more for consistent damage that proved near impossible to avoid. The sound of the attack almost always proved to mentally stun its target before the energy of the attack hit, rendering evasion useless. Combined with an incredible ease of aiming the sound burst, Disarming Voice was considered as accurate as Swift, albeit with the possibility of countering with a Soundproof Pokémon.

Sela took Disarming Voice without much fuss, though she didn't have much of a choice in the matter. While Fairy-type Pokémon didn't resist Fairy-type attacks, the non-physical nature of the attack still hit Sela's strongest defenses and, as a result, the attack dealt minimal damage. She was still up and ready to battle.

It was curious, though not unexpected, that Meowstic sought to fight fire with fire. Gardevoir as a species were stronger both offensively and defensively than Meowstic in the Psychic type's primary form of battle, Special combat, so if I could keep my opponent on that end of the battle, Sela would have the advantage in the fight. At this point, I felt the need to keep it simple; an easy back and forth would slowly, but consistently, wear down not only Meowstic's health but his stamina as well, making a capture when that point came that much easier. All of us, even Meowstic, knew that was the end goal of the battle. I half wondered if he would comply with the idea, though the other half figured that we all could enjoy a bit of a deliberate battle.

I took one earplug out to better hear the battle; the most damaging sound attack was Sela's Hyper Voice, and I wasn't going to have her use it immediately again, though it was best to be prepared either way. For now, I had another plan, and I made sure to pick my words carefully to execute it.

"Nice one, Sela, now show off with Confusion!" Sela wasn't too flashy when it came to normal battles, but I figured Meowstic would catch the wording, and I guessed he would use a similar attack. While Psychic was stronger than Confusion (and both were resisted by Meowstic type-wise),Confusion let me take advantage of Meowstic's ear damage to disorientate it; I knew a number of species used their ears to aid in balance, and while cats like Meowstic also had their tail to help, having messed with his ears should have, in my eyes, removed enough of his balance to make spinning around suspended in the air rather disorientating.

After I knew the exchange of screaming or whatever you like to call it was done with I took out my headphones, and once more looked back at the battlefield where two Pokemon were both showing off their powers in a winner take all battle...although I don't really know what was on the line here besides a chance for Siless to capture something, but nonetheless.

I could see some planning and thinking going on, and I have to say while looking at that I did start to get hungry as it felt like I was here for days. As I pulled a sandwich out of my bag I could hear the next set of instructions being given.

"Nice one, Sela, now show off with Confusion!" Siless commanded.

It wasn't that strong of an attack, nor was it one that was well suited to be used against a Meowstic, who was a Psychic-type itself. However I'm sure Siless had his reasons for choosing this attack.

Confusion would, for a short time, allow the user to attack with a psychic energy where they could pick up the opposing foe, and toss them around, or maybe throw something at them, from say a box of tissues, to a tree given how much mental strength the Pokemon using it had.

Gardevoir picked up the Meowstic, and started to spin him around and around in midair, like a dog chasing their tail over and over. It was a little dizzying to watch, if I do say so myself.

"Whew look at him go around like that. I think I'm gonna be sick. I need to lay down," I said, laying down on the ground for a moment.

Whilst being swung around, Meowstic was unable to free itself in anyway, seeing as how its balance was pretty restricted, mainly because of Gardevoir's tremendous psychic abilities, and because of the prior damage done to its ears. Though it did find one way to fire back. It shot out a bizarre looking beam of purple energy towards Gardevoir, in order to get her to break the hold.

The attack must have been a Psybeam, but it wasn't much of anything for Gardevoir who just brushed off whatever minimal damage she took.

Meowstic must have done the only thing he felt possible in order to counteract what Gardevoir was doing. Granted neither Pokemon took much damage from this last little skirmish, however I could slowly start to see Meowstic enjoy this battle more and more, and seem thrilled that it was taking place, though he was trying to keep his cool about it as he didn't want Siless to go easy, or so I assumed based on what my own Gardevoir told me after reading his mind.

This battle was certainly interesting. I couldn't help but wonder if Meowstic would continue with its battle style of matching move for move, or if he would mix it up soon and try something else.

Meowstic was clearly disoriented being swung around in the air, though it didn't stop him from making a(rather impressive) shot while being suspended; Meowstic's Psybeam didn't deal much damage, but the surprise was enough to make Sela release Confusion just a tad bit earlier than she normally would, and I had to commend him for the aim. No doubt Meowstic would make an amazing addition to my team if he kept this up, even if combat in a Gym was massively different than the wild skirmishes he was used to.

Gym battles were far more 'orderly' than battles in the wild. In the wild, you could ambush, escape, and return to the 'battle' many times before it ends, while a Gym battle is a long test of attrition where a retreat is when you're covered by one of your allies and you barely had time to recover from wounds unless you were already removed from the battle entirely. It wasn't as if you could avoid your opponent's attacks, for the most part it was more if you could take them better than your opponent could take yours. You stopped more attacks than you avoided simply because, in general, it was considered poor form (and an unsafe strategy) to rely on your opponent missing you, rather than actively making sure the attack doesn't happen. Meowstic, with proper training, could no doubt get used to the idea; from immobilizing opponents with a Thunder Wave or stunning them with a Fake Out to completely turning enemy attacks over on themselves with Magic Coat, Meowstic had a lot of possible tricks up his sleeve that would be well suited to a place where wild 'guerrilla' combat wouldn't be as helpful.

It seemed like it was time to start pushing the battle a bit. Meowstic had plenty of energy we wanted to be burning off, and a great battle would keep him satisfied until we could properly train and reward him, not to mention start getting him into battles he'd find far more satisfying. Meowstic seemed to be the type that would want, or even need, the energy of high-tier battles that come from the League system, and I was in a position to start him on that path as a member of my own team. For that, though, I had to win this, and for that? Well, to be honest I was in a good position already, but in battle one can't rest on their laurels; you have to push the advantage, make yourself stronger, weaken your opponent, and push for the win.

"Sela, Shadow Sneak up to Meowstic and recover with Draining Kiss!" Shadow Sneak was quick, normally used as an attack that was faster than most, but more importantly it let its user travel along the ground as a shadow, granting it fantastic positioning power and great speed; in this case, Sela could use it in a fashion similar to a Teleport, though the ghost-type energies of Shadow Sneak would be harder to track for Meowstic than the Psychic Teleport (even though Shadow Sneak had a larger visual cue). Draining Kiss would simply make Sela stronger, sapping a bit of health from Meowstic to keep her stamina high. Even if the energy Sela recovered was minimal, the surge of it would revitalize her, keeping her spirits high for the rest of the fight.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

It had been a long morning. Ivy'd been swamped with paperwork, much to her chagrin. She was itching to get out in the field—it would be more relaxing than staying in here the rest of the afternoon. Too many nights she'd spent camped out at her desk, and with the backlog they had—the computer systems had gone down for a while, requiring only paper documents, and now that they were back up, they had to be input manually into the system again—she'd probably be spending many more nights burning the midnight oil, as they say.

Haji, the lucky guy, was contently laying on the couch in her office, napping away. Sort of—she could still feel his mental energy swirling, always aware. Ivy, on the other hand, spun idly in her rolling desk chair because she didn't want to pick up the pen again.

Sighing, she put her elbows on the desk and propped her head in her hands. This part of the job dragged.

Suddenly, she felt the energy in the room flicker. Haji lifted his head as an ear twitched. And then a figure appeared in her office with a whoosh of air, scattering some loose papers. Ivy only watched them float to the ground. She didn't even bat an eye as Vergil, her Gallade, made his grand entrance. He was scowling. That was pretty usual.

Ivy only watched him. Something about all the paperwork had sapped her energy. Vergil, she noted, had flecks of paint splattered on his shoulder and one arm blade. If she recalled, Chainy was supposed to be painting docs today. Heh.

“Get into it with Dual, did you?” Chainy's Gallade was a sore spot for Vergil.

Vergil huffed and looked to the side. He didn't bother to wipe the paint off.

“Yeah, that kinda day,” she said, idly twisting a piece of hair.

She felt Haji sigh through their mental connect—she wasn't sure which one of them it was aimed at exactly. That happened a lot.

Ivy was aware the two were having some sort of telepathic communication, too. That also happened often, but she wasn't privy to it. Vergil didn't talk to her mind-to-mind ever. Nor talk to her at all really. But he toed the line more often than not when Haji was around.

Then, her computer dinged. Her eyes moved without her body following. When she saw what was on the screen, she became more interested. It was a notice for needing a replacement Ranger on a run. She knew the Trainer—one of their Rangers, Siless.

Ivy furrowed her brow. Hadn't his run already had a replacement called in? Either way, a smile began to creep onto her face as she hit accept.

Energy returned to her as she gathered her things. She slipped her long, red canvas vest over her shoulders, shrugging happily into the comfortable weight. Haji arched his back and stretched like a cat. He joined her on the floor as she was ready to go.

Surprisingly, so did Vergil, although he looked pretty sullen about it. He didn't look at her, and the way he held his head made his hair sort of fall over his eyes like some emo manga character. Ivy shook her head. “So what did you threaten him with this time?” she asked Haij.

“He is is on... probation,” the Espeon told her silently. She didn't miss that he avoided answering her question.

Ivy shrugged. “Aight, let's go then. Siless was in the Valley.”

Haji flexed his mental prowess as she fell into the sensation of nothing—although she thought she felt a little of Vergil too. The Gallade couldn't stand being outdone by anyone. His competitiveness and sour attitude often got him—and her—in trouble. She'd probably hear it from Chainy later.

The teleporting didn't last long, which was good because she hated it. Her feet being on solid ground underneath her was a good thing. The fresh air was great, though.

Whispering dry grasses surrounded her. That was the giveaway of the Valley. They'd landed somewhere in the middle, she thought.

With Haji's direction, the three of them began to head toward the caves. He felt a massive draw of energy, which was probably Siless. He must be battling something. Ivy, happy to be out in the air, stepped eagerly. Vergil dragged his feet behind them as Haji led.

Soon, they got to the edge of the grass and passed through the stringy gnarled trees that lined the edge of the valley. Beyond were the caves. They weren't too far in before Ivy saw her target.

Siless' Gardevoir was holding a Meowstic mentally aloft, only to be shot with a beam of psychic energy. Her eyes tried to spin with the motion so she looked away.

She couldn't catch sight of the other Ranger, though. Must've had to head out. Being a Ranger himself, Siless was probably fine for a few minutes.

“Hey, Siless,” she greeted, once he was done giving commands to his Pokemon.

In a wobb of darkness, aided by the lower light in the cave, Sela, his Gardevoir, seemed to melt into the floor, becoming one with the shadows. Next to her, Vergil had his arms crossed, but he was watching. Battles always fascinated him—or was it the battler this time? She had no idea.

The psychic cat seemed confused for a moment—perhaps he couldn't feel the energy as well. Suddenly, the Gardevoir popped out in front of him. In a quick motion, she made a kissing gesture with her arm. Following her fingers, a thin, shining orb popped out. Even in the dim light, Ivy could see it shimmer.

Suddenly, it popped right in the Meowstic's face. He made a startled sound. Crackling energy followed, striking down before him; probably a gut reaction tactic. Since Sela was close, the bolt singed part of her dress, but it didn't look like it hit her too badly. That was all Ivy could really see—the light was too bright for such a small area.

She hissed as the place was illuminated, throwing up an arm to protect her eyes. When the light faded a little, the Meowstic was not within sight. The Ranger peered into the darkness, but she only barely caught the upturned dirt. The wild Pokemon had gone underground.

“Well, I guess that startled him pretty badly?” she questioned. She looked over at Vergil, but he was still watching Sela. Huh.

Yet another ranger showed up, but I couldn't complain; Ivy was widely considered one of the best. I nodded in her direction, muttered a quick “Hey there” before returning to the task at hand, handling a cat that had just buried himself inside the ground. Digging Pokémon had always proved to be difficult to deal with without certain countermeasures, but the Pokémon couldn't stay underground for too long without coming up to attack. Or escaping, I supposed, but Meowstic didn't seem as though he would leave at this point in the battle. At this point, the best thing seemed to be to prepare; digging took time, and though in a battle we couldn't take too long to set things up, we had a moment we wouldn't have otherwise.

Sela looked confident, ready to take a blow to get some hits in, to push Meowstic even closer to exhaustion and capture. Ideally, that wouldn't be necessary, but the option was there, even if I didn't want to use it. Other than that? We had a hole.. and a cat in it. Not knowing where exactly the cat went was the problem, where it would come up and strike. Sela could possibly notice where Meowstic was underground if his emotions were running high, but there was no way she would be able to focus her Psychic attacks on him through several feet of solid rock if she couldn't also see him.

“Sela, try scaring Meowstic out with an Icy Wind down the hole he dug!” Unless he came across a tunnel system, which most Pokémon avoid to not draw unwanted attention, the chilly gust would have a guided path straight towards the Psychic-type. As Sela knelt to breath the cold down the drilled-out path, I called out a second command. “Cover below yourself with a Reflect once you're done! We don't want to let Meowstic have an easy counterattack, right?”

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Cats didn't usually hang around underground—they were more fans of trees. But Ivy was well-versed in Park battling, where wild Pokemon often implemented non-standard tactics in order to either test Trainers, try to get away, or just accept a battle challenge. Using Dig was pretty common, actually, at least on Ivy's runs.

She didn't think it was going to run away—if a Pokemon didn't do that within the first few minutes, it was probably safe bet—but she couldn't tell where it was either. Underground, a Pokemon could dig extensive tunnels and even pop out at a different part than where it went in. Of course, that also depended on the ability of the Pokemon to dig as well. Ground-types like Dugtrio had a much easier time than say this psychic cat, although he could probably make use out of his psychic powers.

“He is still here,” Haji confirmed. Ivy had been pretty sure it wouldn't run, but it was always good to know for real. She trusted the Espeon's judgment completely.

Next to her, Vergil was looking around the cave actively, trying to sense the Meowstic. He seemed to be having a slightly rough time of it—his mental prowess was not as developed as Haji's, since the Gallade species as a whole was more physically-oriented.

Siless greeted her but was more focused on the battle. That was perfectly fine; they'd have time to catch up later. Now, Sela needed help finding her opponent.

She didn't seem deterred at all about her foe's sneaky battling. Maybe she encountered that a lot in the professional circuit or something. Ivy didn't know enough about it to be sure.

“Sela, try scaring Meowstic out with an Icy wind,” Siless told his Pokemon, with a Reflect to cover her tracks in case the cat popped out early.

The Gardevoir bent down gracefully, her skirts poofing around around her, as she readied to spray the icy blast into the hole Meowstic had disappeared down. A smoky, cold haze developed in one hand; her other was held out slightly behind her, and a shimmering energy was building on that. Then, she shoved that arctic wind into the dugout.

It did what Siless had intended. After a few moments, the ground rumbled slightly behind Sela. But she was ready. When the Meowstic burst from the hole, she had a reflect up. The nearly-invisible screen headed off some of the damage, making the psychic cat slide to the side a little so the blow just glanced off her.

But the cat didn't let that stop him either. With a murky purple glow of his eyes, a cloudy pink fog began to generate underneath him, spilling out like one of the movie making contraptions. Soon, it filled the entire cave since it wasn't that big of an area.

Sela made a surprised noise as the smoke filled the room suddenly. Vergil, next to her, stepped forward once—maybe a gut reaction. Ivy looked at him briefly. He really seemed like he wanted to join the fight.

“Slow down, tiger shark,” she told him, and that was enough to detract his attention.

He glared at her, crossing his arms, pointedly taking a step back so he could lean against the rock wall of the cave. Ivy fought not to roll her own eyes.

The cave was slightly brighter, so visibility was up—sort of. Unfortunately, the cloudy energy filled up the space so much that it was now hard to see much of anything. It was like walking through pink-tinted clouds—and probably about as safe. It was really easy to hide objects in something like this. Including the Meowstic, who now disappeared again. Sort of.

Every so often, Ivy caught the hint of a shadow, like the cat was moving around. But due to the environment, she never got a solid impression of where he was or what he was doing. If she squinted and turned her head just right, she thought she saw pearly reflections among the clouds, but she wasn't sure.

Sela was going to have to maneuver in this place carefully, unknowing what the cat had hiding in the mist. Luckily, she had her own Reflect screens to help her out if needed—if she only used one, she had four left, either generated on the spot or able to place them among the field.

That option might be a little tricky though, if Meowstic was doing the same. She could imagine Pokemon running into invisible walls just like in some clown performance. Except in this small space, if say, it startled an attack out of one of them, it was a lot more dangerous.

Sela's ambush straight into Meowstic's tunnel was extremely effective, and Meowstic's counterattack was weakened by Sela's protective barrier. She was hit, sure, but she didn't flinch from the blow. She barely had any time to react, however, as Meowstic wasted no time in conjuring up a pink mist that quickly covered up the entire cave. This mist formed into giant puffs, swirls, plumes of cotton-candy-like consistency.. almost as if it were a childlike wonderland, at least for a human. Fairy Pokémon tend towards this as a general thought, even when it's not all sunshine, rainbows, and candy. It did make me think, however, what it was like for non-Fairy Pokémon like Meowstic however.

Misty Terrain was known to prevent certain types of status ailments, namely the ones most people think of when that name is used; though there are a lot of different possible statuses, only the more permanent ones were stopped by the mist. Nobody yet knew why this happened, as research was ongoing, but I had a bit of a theory (perhaps colored by my experience with Gardevoir). I felt that Misty Terrain enhanced emotions to the point where the body rejects physical change that isn't outright damage. Sleeping and the reactions to being burned or poisoned were all from the body, but with confusion, which bypassed the mist's protection, the ailment was entirely mental. It was just a theory though, and there were very few possibilities where the mechanics of the mist actually mattered in battle, but I think I might have discovered one use if it was.

We had no clue where Meowstic could have gone inside the mist, other than it was clear that it hadn't outright left the battle. Sela didn't have much in the way of wide-spread offense, with most of her spread attacks being related to voice. Disarming Voice could have been fine, though it was weak and a non-attack would probably be more useful. Hyper Voice was the opposite; not only had we already used it once, but doing so in a cave was probably not the smartest decision, and one I wasn't going to repeat. Instead, I was inspired by Misty Terrain in a sense, the Fairy-type move bringing out a small bit of Fairy-type trickery.

“Sela, use Double Team so that Meowstic will see you wherever you are, and try to Attract him!” It may not work, but if Meowstic was too infatuated to fight as hard, it'd be that much easier to catch him. If not, at least the Psychic-type's attack would let us find him in the mist. It's not like there would be unintended consequences, right?

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Sela was using her senses to try to track the Meowstic, but since they were in such a small area, Ivy supposed that it might be hard to distinguish exactly—that and the pillow pink clouds were kind of obstructing things. She wasn't sure if it had any impact on the mental capabilities of the Pokemon. But it was starting to get to her. It was like walking into a stereotypical teenaged girl's bedroom.

Yuck. Ivy was glad she never went through that phase.

“Sela, use Double Team so that Meowstic will see you wherever you are, and try to Attract him!” Siless yelled.

The Gardevoir considered for a moment and then nodded. Her form began to blur along the edges, like rapid motion in cartoons. Then, after a second, there were multiple copies of the Gardevoir. At first, they all copied the same exact motions, like a mirror. It was a little creepy. But then, they spread out among the fog and acted independently. None of them hit any of Meowstic's hidden screens yet.

Next to Ivy, Vergil's interest was piqued again. He shifted minutely against the wall, but she could tell he was paying attention for all his feigned nonchalance.

Sela waited until her copies were in position, and then she twirled cutely and brought her hand up to her mouth, blowing a kiss into the murky cave. The Ranger had no idea if the wild Pokemon saw it, but as she understood the technique, there were some mental energies that went along with it, not just looks. It was almost like pheromones but not quite. Still had quite the effect, though.

It look hold immediately. Near one of the copies on the left, Ivy saw the light bend awkwardly and then Meowstic was there, coated in dark energy that radiated outward in a short burst because he was so close. It could've been a lot more powerful, but he'd likely been captured by Sela's technique. The clone seemed surprised for a second, but it disappeared in a poof of smoke.

But then another Meowstic appeared near another clone, and another one that seemed sort of lost appeared several feet in front of the Gardevoir. It must've used Double Team too. Ivy couldn't quite tell what type it was—clones could either be just phantoms with flashy attacks that did no real damage and disappeared when attacked or, if the user put a little more energy into their creation, they could do some minor damage with attacks and become a little more solid.

But before any of the other clones of anyone could move, suddenly there was an empty space next to her. Ivy was already facepalming.

Vergil had appeared between Sela and the wild Meowstic, in a semi-battle stance. She sighed. She caught the glint of his eye since he was turned slightly, and it was slightly discolored—he had been affected by the Attract. Naturally.

“Vergil,” she said sharply, but she was ignored. Ivy sighed again. “Welp, that happened,” she told the Trainer, somewhat apologetically.

“He might listen to you or... maybe not,” she added as she thought better. “This could be interesting or disastrous. I'm fairly sure he wants to protect Sela but... if he doesn't, knock him out.”

Ivy could just recall him—if his Pokeball wasn't somewhere in her office. Silly of her, to not have it. But, as he was usually far from her anyway, having the ball with her didn't often help. Haji generally kept him in line enough for her to not need it. He tended to resent her more if she recalled him unwillingly.

“Maybe it can work to your advantage? I suppose there's already a ton of battlers on the field. What's one more.”

Through their mental connection, she heard Haji sigh too. He told her that Vergil's mind was muddled. It would take him a little while to sort through it and try to contact the fighter. That meant they needed time.

Siless could probably use this scenario, if Vergil didn't ruin it. While teaming up on wild Pokemon wasn't allowed, this was a... unique case. Because of all the copies, it would likely even out. Unless something unfortunate happened. Considering that Vergil was under Sela's sway, she might have the best luck of all of them in trying to make him see reason.
