    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Jathan reacted immediately once he saw her, straightening up like she was a teacher that had just caught him slacking off. “I've missed the Park a lot so I thought I'd come back for another visit. Is James alright? I haven't heard from him in a few weeks.”

Ivy nodded, letting her eyes ghost over the field so she could keep an eye on what the Pokemon were up to. “We've been a little busy with this event, though not calling you is all on him. We haven 't been that busy,” she said.

Then, his Bisharp made a sound, politely asking them to hurry it up. It seemed he had no room for small talk when there was a battle going on. While they had exchanged words, the Zorua and its copies had jumbled together, hiding which one was real. There was a chance the Steel-type still knew which one was the correct target, but Ivy couldn't.

“Koma, I want you to use a Metal Burst,” Jathan said.

Ivy had only seen the wave-attack be preformed a couple times, and that was mostly due to the fact that it was a very selective skill. Not many Pokemon could learn it, and she heard that mastering it was pretty difficult. However, Koma seemed on top of it.

The Bisharp held his hands out and to the side, gathering energy as the wind shifted. Then, he threw the power forward with a rush of gray light. The Zorua copies all stilled as the attack came through. Power ruffled their fur as all three foxes stood there. The first two on the left weren't affected at all as the attack hit them, and they dissipated on the wind in a cloud of smoke, their time spent. The last one stumbled, bracing its feet against the ground.

Real one located, Jathan pulled out another Park Ball and threw it. It bounced off the fox and sucked it up in red light. This time, the capture device didn't break open.

Ivy wandered over to retrieve it, picking up the failed ball too and tossing it to the Trainer. The Zorua she pocketed for safe keeping.

Then, something caught her eye at the edge of the stairs, just below the bottom step. It was shiny. Checking it out, she reached down to find a glass sphere. It was a shade of purple with a lighter slash of magenta through the center. Her brow furrowed, but she knew what it was. Walking back over to Jathan, she held the orb out.

“Here, we've been finding these a lot lately. It's a megastone,” Ivy told him. None of them were really sure how they got there. Ivy was suspicious, but nothing bad had happened from it yet. Her first thought was that they were some poacher implant—and probably fake too. But they had started giving them to Trainers as sort of a perk.

Then, from behind the stairs where she just was, there was a muted growling. Ivy turned her head to see a small black and gray dog come out of the shadows, looking from the bottom step to the group. Maybe it had been using the stone as a ball.

“Any interest in a Poochyena?” she asked the Trainer.

Koma's Metal Burst wave was successful: the energy destroyed both of the remaining illusions and knocked the real Zorua to the ground. This was exactly what Jathan had been waiting for. He threw the second Park Ball at the Zorua. This time, it did not escape. The success sound echoed throughout the suddenly empty room, and Jathan couldn't remember the last time he had been so relieved to hear it. Coming back to the Park had probably been a good idea; the young Breeder felt like his battling skills were a bit rusty. They'd definitely get a work-out here.

Ivy walked over and picked up both of the balls. One of them she kept, the one containing the freshly-caught Zorua. The other she threw back to Jathan, who fumbled but managed not to drop it. As the young boy put the capture device back into his backpack, Ivy apparently noticed something on the stairs. She bent down and picked something up before returning to Jathan. In her hand was a small pink orb with a different shade running through the middle.

"Here, we've been finding these a lot lately. It's a megastone," Ivy said as she handed it to Jathan. The stone was cool to the touch, and very smooth. It looked kind of similar to evolution stones, like Thunderstones and Fire Stones, but at the same time different. This one was smooth where the others were rough and craggy. It also looked kind of familiar. It somehow reminded him of his newest Pokemon, Kohai.

A low growling interrupted Jathan's study of the peculiar stone. Jathan looked up to see a small black dog emerge from the shadows behind the staircase. It looked very unhappy with us, like we had stolen something from it. Jathan pocketed the strange sphere quickly; he suddenly felt like he had a connection with it, and he didn't want it taken away.

"Any interest in a Poochyena?" Ivy asked, looking back at the Breeder.

"No thanks," Jathan replied, reaching for a PokeDoll. Coincidentally, this one was in the shape of a Mightyena. "I don't think Saya would get along with another puppy in our group. I'd like to give this little one a toy though, especially if that means it will let us pass."

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Jathan shook his head as he reached for a Pokedoll. “No thanks,” he said, reaching out toward the dog with the doll. “I don't think Saya would get along with another puppy in our group. I'd like to give this little one a toy though, especially if that means it will let us pass.”

If Ivy remembered correctly, Saya was Jathan's Ninetales. She had battled a Joltik in the Woods last time Ivy had seen them. It was nice to see that some familiar faces were still around. Being a fox, which was a relation to the dog, it made sense that she might get territorial, especially if Jathan already had to split his time between taking care of so many Pokemon.

The young man tried to give the toy to the Poochyena, but the mini hyena backed up and hunkered down, snapping his jaws without making noise. It had talked a big game, but when it came time for interaction, it looked like the canine wanted no part of it.

With a glare in the group's direction, the dog backpedaled slowly until it was a good ten feet away. Then it abruptly turned and darted back into the darkness under the stairs. Ivy waited a few seconds, but no more sound came from under them. She half expected the Poochyena to ambush them while going up the stairs, but they passed through without issue.

The Ranger then took them up, heading down the nearest hallway to the right. They had to weave around holes in the floor and places where the carpet was suspiciously dipping in. She wasn't sure how long this place had been here, but it was in no shape for people habitation. They had only barely cleared it to take Trainers through.

Some things were still leftover from wheover lived here, including torn picture frames and other odds and ends on the walls. There were decorative candle holders, the remains of china-painted faces, and hooks where tapestries once hung.

Suddenly, motion flickered in the corner of her eye. Had one of those faces moved?

She stopped, peering at the wall with squinted eyes. The light wasn't the best in here. Then, the gold face on the wall moved again. Ivy stopped as her eyes made sense of what was happening. Then, a shadowy form peeled away from the wall, blinking its red eyes open.

“Oh, it's a Yamask,” she said. “That was really weird for a second. Any interest in this one?”

As soon as Jathan moved forwards to give the soft toy to the little dog, it immediately backed up, keeping its body low. The Breeder recognised this as a retreating posture-apparently the Dark-type had been all bark and no bite. It still flashed its teeth threateningly, but the Pokemon had no dangerous presence any more. It watched the pair of humans closely for a few seconds before darting away. Ivy didn't seem inclined to move immediately, so Jathan rocked back and forth on his feet. He was perfectly content to wait for the Ranger's okay to start moving again.

Ivy started moving, and Jathan followed suit. The woman had such a powerful and protective atmosphere that he twice almost reached for her hand before realising that she wasn't his mother or older sister. The Ranger decided to go up the stairs, which Jathan wasn't too happy about: while he wasn't afraid of heights, he certainly did not like them. The stairs appeared to hold up okay, although they certainly made some alarming creaks at times.

The hallway they arrived in seemed just as dangerous. There were holes in the floor and walls and cobwebs were everywhere. The ground floor was livable compared to the upper ones, apparently. Ivy moved into the hallway and Jathan followed, being sure to stay close to her. The walls were covered in paintings, and the occasional decorate candlestick, minus the candle. Most of the paintings were destroyed or faded. Ivy stopped to look at one, a black painting featuring a golden mask of some sort. Jathan was just admiring how well preserved the picture was when a Pokemon suddenly phased out of it. Jathan just barely managed to suppress a shriek. The golden mask was being held up by a small black Pokemon with large red eyes, which seemed somehow sad.

"Oh, it's a Yamask. That was really weird for a second," Ivy commented naturally, as if she dealt with this every day. Then again, she possibly did. "Any interest in this one?"

"No thanks," Jathan stammered. He was working on his fear issues, but he didn't think he was ready to try training such a scary Ghost-type just yet. He was still holding the Mightyena doll form before in his hand, and he got ready to hand it to the Pokemon. Hopefully the Ghost-type wouldn't mind if it was slightly sweat-stained.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“No, thanks,” Jathan said in response to her question. She picked up the slight wavering of his voice. Was he scared of ghosts? Chainy's younger brother was adorable.

The Yamask floated closer, calling out in a sad, eerie tone. It held its mask out, imprinted with what they said was the soul of who they'd been in life. The story behind them was kinda creepy, really. Ivy thought Jathan might've shivered, but she couldn't be sure. He did offer up the Pokedoll he had tightly gripped in his hand, though.

The small ghost reached out to grab that in one hand, and then it floated forward. Jathan stepped out of the way to prevent the Pokemon form going through him. When it came to the wall, the Yamask didn't stop. Instead, it phased through the ripped wallpaper, doll and all.

Ivy didn't dwell too much on it, instead waving Jathan forward as she continued down the hall. After a few minutes, she randomly picked one of the doors they were passing to head into. The one she picked as closed, and as she turned the knob, she realized that she couldn't push the door forward very far.

Frowning, the Ranger put her shoulder against it and heaved, widening the opening slightly. She heard a scraping of wood inside the room before the door gave and opened to an acceptable gap. Looking around the panel, she found that an overturned bookcase had been holding it shut.

“Hey, look at this, Jathan,” she said as she stepped inside the room.

It had once been a library. At the very far side of the room, a fireplace sat with a few couches—or what used to be couches, anyway—scattered around it. They were tipped over and torn into, if the pale whitish stuffing was anything to judge by.

Shelves were built into the walls, and there had been rows of them in the room itself, too. Now, most of those cases were knocked down and scattered across the room, making a jungle of rectangle wood. Books and scattered pages littered the floor, and Ivy shook her head.

“Some of the people back at the outpost would have a heart attack if they saw this,” she said. She wasn’t a big reader herself, preferring to be outdoors instead of tucked away inside, but she did lament the destruction of this place.

Then, a fluttering of feathers caught her attention. It was hard to see in the dim light, since the only source they had was a small hole in the ceiling in the far corner of the room and the miniscule hallway. Still, Ivy had been coming here a lot lately, and she thought that probably helped her night vision a little.

On top of one of the bookcases, angled slightly upward due to the other cases it was resting on, sat a bird with skinny orange legs and a hat. It cawed at them when the group caught sight of it.

“There's a Murkrow there,” she said. “Want to battle that one?”

Jathan raised his hand with a slight tremble, offering the doll to the sad-looking Ghost Pokemon. It started drifting forwards, and it slowly but carefully took the doll with its small black hands. It showed no sign of ceasing forward movement so Jathan immediately darted to one side, almost hiding behind Ivy. The Ghost-type continued moving forwards as if there had never been anyone in its way. When it reached the opposite wall, it began to phase through. Jathan noticed with interest that the doll he had given the Wild Pokemon phased through with it. The Yamask was holding it by the tail, and the doll's head was the last part to be hidden from sight. It was probably just some trick of the light, but Jathan could have sworn that the Mightyena head had a tortured expression on it. If any nonsentient objects deserved pity, this was definitely one of them. You couldn't pay any amount of money to have Jathan swap place with it.

Ivy had already moved on, and Jathan snapped out of his daydream when he saw her waving at him through his peripheral vision. The young boy trotted up to her and stayed at her heels dutifully. The pair passed many doors on both sides of the hallway, Some were open and others were shut. All of the open ones showed rooms in various states of disrepair. Jathan tried not to look into any of them because sometimes he could see things moving, and even though he felt safe with Ivy there was no point in pushing whatever supernatural forces were lurking about.

After what seemed like hours, Ivy finally stopped in front of a closed door. She went to open it, but seemed to have some trouble. The Ranger finally managed to force it open with her shoulder, eliciting a horrible wooden squeal as she did so, as if a table was being dragged along a floor. Jathan clapped his hands over his ears hurriedly. The door still wasn't completely open, but Ivy managed to slip inside. Even from here Jathan could see that the light inside wasn't great. He imagined Ivy being swallowed up by the darkness and never seen again. Thankfully, a couple seconds later Ivy's voice called out, inviting the young Breeder to come see something. Jathan knew that powerful ghosts could mimic others' voices, but he decided that it was worth the risk. He gingerly stepped through the door frame, being careful to avoid touching it. Once inside, he was greeted by the sight of a decrepit old library. At least, that's what it seemed to be: the only light provided in here aside from the door was a hole in the ceiling down at the opposite end of the room. Even in the darkness, Jathan could get a good idea of the size of the room; it was comparable with the entryway and the dining room they had been in earlier.

It looked like there had been some sort of book massacre in here. Like most libraries there were shelves built into the walls, and these were still in fairly good repair. The free-standing shelves, on the other hand, had been knocked over and smashed. Jumbles of wood littered the entire room. Under those were tattered books and scattered pieces of paper-Jathan couldn't move his feet without eliciting the rustling sound of paper.

"Some of the people back at the outpost would have a heart attack if they saw this," Ivy said quietly. Jathan supposed she was talking about the people in the Archives. Jathan liked the Archive workers: whenever he came to visit and James had an emergency call-away, the young Breeder would go to visit them. They always had interesting books for him to read or cool pictures to look at, and the lady in charge usually gave him chocolate-covered honeycomb to eat white he waited. It probably helped that he enjoyed reading, although he couldn't be described as voracious for text.

Jathan moved further into the room a bit, hoping that his eyes would adjust to the darkness a little better. As he did so, more of the paper rustling filled the room. Jathan stopped to inspect a dusty tome that was laying mostly intact on the ground. It was only when he had bent down that he realised the rustling was still present. There was something in here with them! Jathan whipped his head around wildly trying to catch sight of whatever it was, and he backed towards Ivy as he did so. Finally, he caught sight of Ivy pointing towards one of the more-upright bookcases.

"There's a Murkrow there. Want to battle that one?" she asked.

Jathan narrowed his eyes, looking in the direction the Ranger had indicated. He could just barely make out the shifting form of a bird. It didn't take long for the young Breeder to make his decision; he had seen a few Honchkrow in his travels, and he had always wanted to try breeding a Murkrow.

"Sure, and I know just the Pokemon to use," he said. "Come on out, Slip!"

The Breeder threw a ball into the centre of the room. There was a flash of white light and the form of a Gyarados exploded outwards. A couple of bookcases were smashed against the wall as Slip's gigantic sinuous form knocked them over. Jathan winced as he heard more of the scraping noises. Hopefully Ivy wouldn't mind a little bit more damage to this already-trashed library.

"Careful girl, we don't want to smash this room up any more," Jathan called out. Slip grumbled a little bit but then started making a strange hissing noise. It might have sounded intimidating to others, but Jathan knew that it was the Gyarados' equivalent of a cat's purr. Slip was very un-Gyarados-like: she was usually calm and enjoyed battling in a non-direct manner. Strangest of all, she didn't seem to have any anger or rage inside her. Any other Gyarados might have been too much for Jathan to handle, but Slip was just perfect for him.

"I'm happy to see you too, Slip." Jathan smiled. He knew that his Gyarados had been wanting to come to the Park ever since she had evolved, and while the Manor might not have been the best place to bring her, he hadn't been able to say no. He had just hoped that there were areas big enough for her to battle in, and as it turned out, there were. Thank Arceus.

"Your opponent is that Murkrow up there." Jathan pointed the bird out to his Water-type. "Start off with a nice simple Ice Fang. Remember, try not to damage the room too much."

Slip growled and bared her mouth wider than it normally was. Icicles gathered around her four biggest fangs as she coiled up the rest of her long form underneath her, like a snake. Slip and Jathan had spent lots of time training on dry land, because most Trainer battles didn't have easy access to the amount of water a Gyarados was used to swimming in. Using this Snake Stance gave Slip reach and speed, and hopefully the Murkrow wouldn't see the attack coming. After the long drawn-out battle with the Zorua, Jathan was hoping that this battle would be just a little more simple.

I don't know how to play easy. Murkrow gender?

    BP#2

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Jathan had to squint to see where Ivy was pointing. The bird didn't take off, though, which raised the Trainer's chances of catching it. Some Pokemon were skiddish like that, but the vast majority of them were curious. Ivy did know that Honchkrow and Murkrow were in fairly high demand on the mainland, especially in the battle curcuit, and as a breeder, Jathan could probably make use of one.

Once he got a good look, the Trainer said, “Sure, and I know just the Pokemon to use. Come on out, Slip!”

He threw a ball down, and the explosion of light sent loose papers scattering. Ivy moved away from the bookcases as another one was shoved thanks to the release of the Pokemon, slamming up against the wall. She was strong, but not enough to counteract the force of a giant Pokemon.

When the brightness cleared, a large, Chinese water monster was floating in the room. It sported blue scales and had a cream-colored stomach from its head all the way to its tail. White fins jutted out of its body, which was probably what let it float. Ivy had never thought Gyarados looked much like a Flying-type, but she supposed she didn't look like much either.

Compared to his reaction to the ghosts, Jathan didn't look scared of the massive Water-type at all. His own Pokemon aside, the Gyarados was plenty intimidating. It even let out a growl-like sound, but Jathan took it for the greeting it was.

“I'm happy to see you too, Slip,” he responded. Then he pointed to the bird. “Your opponent is that Murkrow up there. Start off with a nice, simple Ice Fang. Remember, try not to damage the room too much.”

Ivy didn't think the room could get much worse bar blowing a hole in the ceiling, and hopefully this match wouldn't get that violent. She was a little concerned about the size difference since the Gyarados loomed in the room, large as it was, and the Murkrow barely managed to add a bump to the bookshelf. Still, Slip didn't seem like the usual of her species. She was calmer and wasn't thrashing about the room. Maybe the battle would go smoother than she thought.

Instead of lashing out, the Gyarados did something Ivy had never seen before. The Water-type dropped her flight ability and coiled up like a snake instead, winding her long body into a much smaller space. That gave her some reach ability.

Slip's fangs then started becoming frosty, letting off a mist that looked similar to when someone breathed outside in the cold. Sometimes, Pokemon used Ice Fang as a long-distance attack, shooting off frozen spines. It looked, however, like Slip was going to reach out with her long body and bite the Murkrow.

Suddenly, she flashed out, baring her teeth at the bird. The Dark-type squawked in response, fluttering its wings as it tried to move out of the way. Due to another bookshelf being too close, it didn't quite manage it as the Gyarados came down on top of the Murkrow's head.

Then, the bird let out a piercing screech before the Water-type could clamp down fully, causing Slip to flinch a little. Then, the bird attacked, thrashing its wings as it tried to get out of the sea serpent's grip. The Gyarados grumbled as the Murkrow beat at it, managing to get flight as the Water-type pulled her head away. She was cringing a little bit, like that screech had been too loud for her. Since the bird was practically in her mouth cavity, that was probably true.

In a dark blur, the Murkrow took off. In its wake, a foggy mist swept out of her wings with every flap. After a few seconds, the room was coated with it, making it even more impossible to see. Even though the fog looked bright, it cloaked everything else in shadow. The bird made a sound then, but since the room was on the larger size, Ivy couldn't tell where it had really come from. The empty space and the mist was manipulating it.

Jathan would have to do something to find the bird. Slip could stay where she was, but that put her at risk from attacks. Still, flying around the room blindly was dangerous too. The Trainer was going to have to tread carefully.

OOC: No shit. Male I think please.

Slip did as Jathan instructed, curling herself up into a coil. Once the icicles around her fangs had resolved themselves into blocks of ice that emitted a gentle white frost (barely visible in the dark room) the Gyarados lunged forwards like a striking snake. Unfortunately for her, despite her speed, the Murkrow was slightly faster. It took flight and instead of grabbing the bird's body, like she intended to, her icy teeth latched onto the Dark-type's head. The Murkrow immediately started squawking and screeching as its wings battered frantically at her head. Slip muttered unhappily as a particularly loud screech reverberated throughout her head, and she reluctant released the Wild Pokemon. It dropped a few feet before catching the air and winging away into the darkness of the room. With every wingbeat, a puff of silvery smoke burst into the air, and the haze grew exponentially in size until it was obscuring the entire room.

A very appropriate swear word came to the front of Jathan's mind, but he'd never utter it, especially in Ivy's presence. The visibility had already been bad enough, and now he had to deal with this fog too. Slip's eyes should be better than his, but Jathan knew that even his Gyarados couldn't be expected to see through this impermeable mist. The question was now "how can I negate the fog?"

Jathan decided to use a mental trick that'd he'd found helpful on occasion: he tried to put himself into other people's shoes. Jakk would take one look at the mist and immediately set the bookcase on fire, providing easy visibility throughout the room. However that would probably cause some serious damage, and more than likely earn him an official warning. Jathan doubted he'd be able to stand a reprimanding stare from Ivy; he'd probably melt into the ground. Jakk had partially blown up a mountain and easily shrugged off the warning he'd gotten from Ivy, something that was no small source of amazement for the young Pokemon Breeder. Ivy herself would probably just glare at the mist and it'd acquiesce and fade away, so that was two people down. James would go for the compromise, most likely some form of wind attack that would blow away the mist. However, the room would still take some form of damage and there was a fairly serious risk of either Ivy or Jathan himself being hit by a flying book or struck by some wood or something.

In the end, Jathan decided to tackle this problem with the strengths that he had-his trust in his Pokemon and their own abilities. Slip was a Water-type Pokemon, so he would use water to solve this problem. All of a sudden, memories rose unbidden in Jathan's mind: countless winter mornings waking up to find the farm wreathed in fog, only for the rain to slice it down inside minutes.

"Slip, use a Rain Dance to clear up this haze!" Jathan called.

The Gyarados started to weave her head from side to side, reminiscent of the way a snake moved when it was being played to by a snake charmer. Her coiled up tail moved too, twisting and twitching in time to a beat that only she could hear. A wet drop fell onto Jathan's shoulder, and he looked up. Slowly but surely, beads of water were gathering on the ceiling, like there was been a pipe burst on the floor above and the water was just beginning to seep through. Hopefully there would be enough water to cut away at the fog, even if only enough for Slip to see. Jathan was worried about the potential water damage that this could cause, but there was nothing in this room of value, and if the manor couldn't stand up to a bit of water then the Rangers wouldn't have cleared Slip to enter in the first place.

"Good job, Slip; now if you see the Murkrow, I want you to use Whirlpool to control the water and keep it pinned where we can see it," the Breeder added. "Try to use the Whirlpool to keep the destruction to a minimum."

Originally, Jathan had been contemplating commanding Slip to use Hydro Pump, but if the rain might potentially have caused a shitstorm, Hydro Pump definitely would have. However, Whirlpool would not only have a chance of keeping the Murkrow exactly where Jathan wanted it, but every drop of water that was being used in the Whirlpool attack was a drop less leaking through the floor or soaking into the paper on the ground. Furthermore, Jathan knew that there would be no better time to attempt a capture than when the bird was being held still by a ton of water, so he reached for a Park Ball. If his plan went as he hoped it would, he'd try for a capture. It was perhaps a little too early, but Jathan's hope for a nice clean battle after the Zorua mess burned too brightly for him to play it safe.

Black Apricorn get. No other stuff tho.

    BP#3

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Jathan definitely had to be careful. The fog was making it hard to see, and his Pokemon wasn't exactly graceful due to her bulk. The bird was super small in comparison, too, so it was likely to escape if Slip tried another attack like Ice Fang. There was a lot of debris to get around too, even if the Gyarados could fly.

After a second, Jathan said, “Slip, use a Rain Dance to clear up this haze!”

The breeder thought fast, and that would probably work in his favor. Slip started to move right away, swinging her head back and forth. Ivy felt the temperature dip a little bit, and that made her flip up the hood on her canvas fest just before the first dribble of water came down. Haji moved closer as she lifted the edge of the vest, creating a canopy for him so he didn't get wet.

The purple cat leaned close, and then they watched the fog start to lift. Ivy wasn't sure it was going to dissipate at first, since the murky air tried to hold on. Sometimes, if the temperature was just right, rain and haze could coexist for a while. However, the rain was slowly winning out until the rest of the room became visible. She really hoped that the floors didn't start to rot or something due to water damage.

“Good job, Slip,” Jathan said. “Now, if you see the Murkrow, I want you to use Whirlpool to control the water and keep it pinned where we can see it.”

The Ranger peered across the field, and thanks to a minute fluttering of rain-soaked wings, Ivy caught sight of the Murkrow on one of the far bookcases. It didn't look too pleased with the change of weather, especially because its wings weren't made like a Ducklett's—too much water and it wouldn't be able to fly.

Still, it look off, trying anyway. That's when Slip made a rumbling sound deep in her throat. Her whole body trembled for a second before the rain on the field started to twist into a funnel, arcing down from the sky in swirls that became thicker as seconds ticked by.

The Murkrow seemed to realize what was happening, and it made a darting motion toward the edge of the water. However, it was too late to escape. The water turned into a wall, and the bird cawed out as it had to veer inward to avoid the moving water. Ivy could barely see its dark form moving behind the spinning liquid, but it seemed like it was starting to slow down. Its altitude dropped, maybe indicating that its wings were getting full of water.

Jathan pulled out a standard Park Ball from his pack, looking for an opening to capture the flier. Normally, that would've been a problem. The bird was trapped in a vortex of water that was trying to keep the bird in one spot. If it couldn't fly out of it, the whirling water would probably repel any sort of projectile too—at least something as light as a Park Ball.

Thankfully, Slip seemed to know what he was intending. With a look at her Trainer, she watched him throw the capture device. When it was just about half way to the whirlpool, the Gyarados powered it down. The water spun more slowly, and the bright whoosh of the water dulled down until they could see again.

That let the Park Ball sail through, hitting the Murkrow on the wing. The device sucked up the Pokemon, and after a second of hovering in midair, it dropped to the floor with a splat that spit droplets outward. The rain faded away eventually, and Ivy waited for it to stop before she threw back her hood and wove her way around the fallen bookcases.

She had to shake the Park Ball off a few times when she picked it up so it wouldn't soak her pockets. She then added it to the Zorua's resting place so it wouldn't get lost.

Ivy took a glance around the room. Water droplets were still rolling down the walls and the cases, and there were puddles on the floor. Nothing seemed too damaged beyond what it had started out with, but if it didn't get cleaned up, it would start to mold. Then they really would have problems.

She debated giving Jathan a warning about damage, but thought that maybe a reminder was more appropriate. He was a regular and knew the rules. He may have an idea about cleaning the place up too.

“While you didn't really damage anything too much, all this water's going to create mold if it doesn't get cleaned up. If you don't have any ideas, I'll have to make a call. I wouldn't want the floor falling out into the basement or anything,” she told him.

As she was pulling out her phone, a small, pink rodent darted out from underneath one of the holes where the bookcases had piled up. It was sopping wet, making its fur dart out at odd angles. When it saw the group, it gave a screechy growl and continued to chatter. It looked a little ticked off.

“Looks like the room isn't the only thing the water may have bothered. Any interest in this Ratatta?”

Jathan was glad to see that his Whirlpool plan had been successful, and he was even more pleased to see that Slip could anticipate his movements. When the young Breeder had seen the bird caught within the water vortex, he'd immediately thrown the Park Ball without thinking. The realisation that the water would most likely deflect the ball only came to him a second after the capture device had left his grasp. Thankfully, Slip decreased the power of her Whirlpool enough so that the Murkrow's form was revealed, and the Park Ball was able to hit the Dark-type's wing, resulting in a successful capture.

The room was silent for a couple seconds, bar the splashing of water as Slip ceased the Whirlpool entirely. The dripping water from the ceiling also ceased, and Ivy threw back her hood as she went over to pick up the ball. It was this motion that made Jathan realise that his hair was probably sopping wet-a quick check with the palm of his hand confirmed the theory. Furthermore, his shoes were wet completely through, ensuring an uncomfortable walk for at least the next half-hour.

Ivy walked back having picked up the Park Ball, and there was a look on her face that gave Jathan pause. "While you didn't really damage anything too much, all this water's going to create mold if it doesn't get cleaned up. If you don't have any ideas, I'll have to make a call. I wouldn't want the floor falling out into the basement or anything," she said.

Jathan knew that he wasn't being scolded, and even so normally he might have gone into a bit of a panic. However, he was riding high from the incredibly successful battle with Murkrow, and the perfect solution to his problem presented itself almost immediately. The young man turned to his Gyarados and rubbed her rather vigorously along her side.

"Great job, Slip! I'm very proud of you," Jathan said as the large blue Pokemon purred like a cat. "We've got a little bit of cleaning up to do, though. Do you think you can use your Whirlpool again to suck up the moisture and shoot it out through that hole in the ceiling? You don't have to get every single bit, just the pools that might cause decay."

Slip grunted and started to twirl her tail in a circle, and I heard the sound of water moving start up again. Before I could take a look to se if my idea would work, Ivy got my attention. A small purple rat was on the floor looking up at us, chittering angrily. Its fur was sticking out at od angles and I could tell the poor beast had received quite a shock when its nice little hidey-hole had suddenly half-filled with water.

"I'm sorry little one, I didn't mean to disturb you," Jathan said as he bent down to take a look at the rat. While he didn't consider himself to be a particularly spectacular Breeder, Jathan was pretty sure that raising a Ratatta would present little to no challenge for him. He straightened up and shook his head at Ivy, reaching for a doll as he did so. Hopefully they weren't all waterlogged.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“Great job, Slip!” Jathan praised. In response, the Gyarados did her grumbly purr. The Trainer also suggested having the large Water-type use Whirlpool to clean up the stray water. Even if it wouldn't get the liquid that already soaked into the floorboards and books, it would help clear up the puddles. There was even a hole in the ceiling for the water to be shot into.

Before Slip could act on this plan, however, the Ratatta interrupted. At its annoyed sound, Jathan bent down to be closer to the rodent. “I'm sorry little one. I didn't mean to disturb you,” he told it.

The rat's eyes narrowed but it didn't look very appeased. Ivy couldn't really say she blamed it since its fur was all wild and tiny drops were dripping off of its body. The Trainer stood up after his words, reaching for a Pokedoll in case the wild Pokemon got nasty. Ratatta were sometimes temperamental.

The rodent didn't look interested in the doll, however. It gave an annoyed roll of its eyes and then dashed toward Jathan, bonking its head into the boy's leg, as if saying “way to go, jerk.” Jathan stumbled a little bit, since the mice actually had more power than they appeared to have. Then, it ran toward the wall and disappeared into a hole that had been chipped away from the siding.

“Well at least it didn't want to fight about it,” Ivy offered, shrugging as she watched what Slip would do.

The large hovering sea monster floated as close to the hole in the ceiling as she could without bumping into the walls or dragging her belly on the bookcases. Then, she concentrated as the water started to creep toward her. This water twister was a lot thinner than the one she had used to trap the Murkrow, which was appropriate since the gap in the ceiling wasn't very large.

Then, the Gyarados concentrated on her attack, filtering the water out the hole. Chunks of ceiling fell off where the water clipped the tiles, although they weren't very big. When she was done, Ivy waited a second, but the ceiling didn't collapse on them. However, the water she had shot out suddenly came down in a torrent of pellets, beating against the roof like a heavy rain.

Satisfied that this partial clean up would do for now, Ivy nodded and headed out of the room. She would still report it so they could get someone to inspect it later. Maybe they could salvage some of the books or cases. She made a mark on her phone as she headed down the hall, looking at the unfinished map of the Manor she loaded up. With all the people coming here for the event, she figured they would have the entire place mapped out by the end of the month.

A creaking sound made her look up and put her phone away. A set of double doors lead off from the hallway—one of them wasn't shut all the way so the wood was swaying in the breeze. The glass had been knocked out of both of them, although there were shards sticking out of it. It had once been beautiful stained class.

Ivy inched the door open further so they could see where it lead, casting over her shoulder, “Be careful, there's some glass here.”

The now-broken doors led out onto a veranda of sorts, although since they were on the second floor, it made quite the sight. Pillars braced it from below, setting in a courtyard of sorts. A gazebo-type platform was at the end of a railed path, set with benches along the square walls and a canopy over it with once-brilliant red tiles. A decorative clay border was around a withered plant that had died thanks to lack of care.

Suddenly, motion came from behind the plant. At first it was hard to see, since the gnarled twigs of the dead plant made a net of gray. Then, she clearly saw a witch's hat sitting on top of a Pokemon with both parts hosting beady, yellow eyes.

She pointed out the Pokemon to Jathan. “Hey, there's a Pumpkaboo over there. Battling on this platform might be tricky, but do you want to give it a shot?”

The Rattata simply shot Jathan a look of disdain and headbutted his leg as if to say "you can't buy me off, arsehole". The strike actually hurt a little bit, although Jathan was sure it wouldn't raise a bruise. Still, the shock caused the Breeder to wince, and this apparently satisfied the Wild Pokemon. It ran back towards the wall and disappeared into the blackness of a small hole in the raised siding.

"Well at least it didn't want to fight about it," Ivy remarked. Jathan nodded in response, putting the doll away as he did so.

The roar of the water grew louder and Jathan turned to see the vast majority of the room's water in the form of a waterspout. Slip was hovering in the air near the ceiling hole and making a rumbling sound. She was swaying her head from side to side as the twister grew in size but not in height. Finally, the vortex began to grow towards her, becoming thin as it did so. In a sudden movement, the water leaped up out of the room. There was silence for a second, and then a thundering tat-tat-tat as the improvised rainstorm crashed down onto the outside room. Ivy nodded satisfactorily and noted something down on her phone as Jathan ran over to Slip and gave her a big hug. Well, technically he just stretched his small arms as widely as possible around her neck, but the sentiment was what counted. The Gyarados rumbled happily as Jathan patted her once more and returned her to her Poke Ball.

Ivy was already moving out of the room and back into the corridor, so Jathan jogged after her. The Ranger seemed interested in a set of half-broken double doors-she pushed her way through them, warning Jathan to be careful of the broken glass as he did so. Jathan followed her again, and the pair found themselves on a platform overlooking a small garden of sorts. Inside the garden was a raised gazebo that appeared to be built around a withered plant. Jathan was wondering what had drawn Ivy's attention when he saw motion behind the plant.

"Hey, there's a Pumpkaboo over there," Ivy said. "Battling on this platform might be tricky, but do you want to give it a shot?"

Jathan swayed a little as indecision wracked him. The Pokemon was certainly rare, but Ivy was right in that battling here would be a real challenge. Furthermore, Jathan wasn't very skilled in the raising of Ghosts, and while he'd come here to test out his battling skills something just didn't feel right here.

"Actually, I think I'm going to leave it here," the boy said slowly. As always, his hand crept towards his collection of PokeDolls, but they probably wouldn't be needed seeing as the Pumpkaboo was a fair distance from them.

If you had captured, you would've gotten another stone!

    NBP#5

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Jathan thought hard about the decision to pass the pumpkin Pokemon up or not. Ivy knew from many of her other runs that Pumpkaboo was a very sought-after Pokemon. At least three of her Trainers had stopped to catch one, and all of them had seemed pretty satisfied. Due to the range of sizes of this Pokemon, they could all do slightly different things in battle.

Finally, the breeder made his choice. “Actually, I think I'm going to leave it here,” he said. Ivy was pretty surprised. A new, rare Pokemon would've been right up his alley.

Ivy shrugged. It was his choice. “Okay, we'll keep going then.”

There was a chance the wild Pokemon would leave them alone, since they had yet to cross all the way across the walkway and into the gazebo where the pumpkin was hiding. It peeked out from behind the dead plant as it looked on curiously, and since it didn't seem like it was moving, the Ranger turned to head back into the manor.

Only to be stopped by another Pumpkaboo blocking their way. It bounced up and down slightly at their proximity, bobbing its head a little bit. Ivy saw Jathan's hand sneaking toward a doll as a flash of orange caught her attention over her shoulder. Another Pumpkaboo appeared behind them.

With Haji's mental confirmation, she determined these were only copies—phantoms meant to explore. They were very nearly solid, but the generous light from outside gave them the barest hint of translucence, which gave them away as doubles. That didn't mean they couldn't be dangerous, though. The one behind them scooted in a little closer.

“I think you better use that doll,” the Ranger advised.

The Trainer did so, and they backed away slowly as the ghost copy phased through the group to where Jathan set the doll. Ivy shivered as it made contact with her. Why were all apparitions cold?

The ghost now distracted, Ivy took the group back through the doors, being careful not to touch any of the broken glass. Then, a low growling sound stopped her. She felt Haji tense beside her as a small hyena stood braced in the middle of the hallway, blocking their way forward.

“Here's another Poochyena,” Ivy said. “Think this one is more bark than bite too?”

Ivy seemed a little bit surprised, but shrugged quickly. "Okay, we'll keep going then," she said. There was something in her tone of voice that made Jathan think he'd chosen incorrectly, but it was too late now.

When Ivy turned to lead him back into the Manor, Jathan saw a second Pumpkaboo blocking their exit. It looked a little strange though: partly translucent and almost like they had no physical presence. Ivy seemed a little on edge too, so Jathan decided to just go the safe route and throw a doll back towards the Pumpkaboo. After all, he had loads to spare and didn't want to get involved with anything that had the power to create illusions like this. Ivy reacted to Jathan's choice with favour, so he turned quickly and ditched a Jynx-shaped soft toy back towards the pergola. As he did so the young man noticed that there were lots of illusions now, some floating in midair and others half-poking out of the ground. They all converged on the doll eagerly and Jathan felt like he'd dodged a bullet.

Thankfully, the return to the hallway was not impeded. Once inside, however, a second Poochyena took offense to their presence. It was standing right in the middle of the hallway and growling threateningly at the two people. Not that Jathan was scared; Poochyena were much cuter than they were fearsome.

"Here's another Poochyena. Think this one is more bark than bite too?" the Ranger asked.

"I sure hope so," Jathan replied. He reached for another doll but made jerky actions as he did so, hoping to scare it off. Usually moving quickly in unexpected directions brought out a canine's instinct to move, and Jathan was hoping that in this particular case the Poochyena's flight reflex would beat its fighting instinct.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“I sure hope so,” Jathan replied, making sharp motions as he grabbed for another Pokedoll.

The little dog didn't look too intimidated, but it did tilt its head a little in annoyance. It took a look at Haji and then changed its mind about getting agitated. While many people didn't think that Psychic-types were a threat to Dark-types, wild Pokemon were smarter. Type advantage didn't mean everything.

The little dog snorted a little bit and pawed at its nose to clear it, and then it trotted down the hallway without giving them another glance. At least it hadn't gotten upset. Jathan put the Pokedoll away and then the group continued on.

Soon they came to an ajar door that caught Ivy's interest. There had been a flash of light in the darkness. She stopped and pulled the door open, finding that she couldn't see much beyond the hall. Even though the Manor had holes in it, there was little light unless they wandered under a patch that let the sun in.

This entryway seemed to lead down. Ivy couldn't remember if she had ever been in the basement before, though she knew some of the other Rangers had started a map of it. She always thought it was more fun to explore blindly, but after the incident in the Valley when the caves had collapsed while on a run, she was glad that they wouldn't ever be truly lost.

She waved the Trainer forward, wondering if Jathan was afraid of creepy, dark places too. He hadn't fared very well against the ghost, and there would probably be some more strange stuff down there. Still, there was the chance that a rare Pokemon was lurking too, since it was a less-explored region of the Manor. Pokemon that wanted to avoid Trainers probably migrated there.

The wooden steps creaked ominously as she carefully edged down them, Haji at her side. She could feel his psychic energy exploring the area, brushing a wave of tickling sensations across her skin that made her shiver. It wasn't cold, just strange.

Going down was a shorter trip than she expected, since the descent leveled off into a small room. In the very low light, she could make out that there were more stairs in the other corner of the room. It seemed pretty far, though, even though she knew that the room couldn't possibly be that big. Ivy stifled a yawn, pulling up the collar of her vest to cover it. That was strange. Why was she so tired?

Haji, next to her, nudged her side, and she stumbled more than she should've. It was a little hard to focus for some reason.

“Something is here,” Haji told her mind-to-mind.

The Ranger couldn't see it, so it must've been hiding in the dark. She flicked on her flashlight and slowly panned it around the room. Suddenly, a flash of bright caught the light for an instant, over by a dark mass. She moved the light back to it and saw that a stack of boxes was obscuring the form of a yellow bipedal Pokemon. The light had reflected off a small white disk that was swinging back and forth at a rhythmic pace.

As she looked at it, she felt her eyes start to droop. Haji bumped her again, and she shook her head rapidly to clear it, making sure to look away from the wild Pokemon.

“Any interest in this Hypno?” she asked.

She didn't know if Jathan was feeling the effects of the hypnotism or if it was just concentrated toward one of them. Usually techniques like that were stronger when focused and only light when over a broader area. Haji seemed unaffected. Either way, they had to deal with this Pokemon before they proceeded. It wouldn't due to be encountering something more dangerous and then be put to sleep or something.

OOC: @WinterVines; Damn, close to a year. Also, my main reason for attempting to cap this thing is so that I can have one without needing to own a *shudder* Drowzee.

The little dog didn't seem at all intimidated by Jathan's sharp movements, but a quick look at the no-nonsense look on Ivy's Espeon sent the little Dark-type on its way. Jathan smiled happily; puppies sure were cute when they were unreasonably scared. One Poochyena that he had raised didn't like being petted, but had come to the realisation that it was going to receive pats anyway. The look of resignation whenever Jathan came near had been priceless.

Jathan continued on, faithfully following Ivy down the maze of corridors. Eventually she took interest in one and pulled it open. Jathan instinctively recoiled from the sight of a rickety wooden staircase that descended quickly into darkness. It awoke memories from a time that Jathan was very young, and afraid of the family home's basement. It had a rickety staircase just like this one, and the scariest part had been the family's old water heater. Jakk used to tease Jathan by claiming that their father had trapped an angry old Magmortar down there, and that it would love to get revenge by gobbling him up. One day, Jathan had tripped over a small box in the corridor and smashed straight through the door. Really, it was a miracle that he wasn't killed falling down the staircase. The last thing Jathan saw before blacking out was the black metal slits of the heater as merry flames licked out between them. It had obviously been a trick of the light, but Jathan had thought that the flames resolved themselves into the face of a laughing Magmortar.

Ivy motioned for Jathan to enter, and he paused for a second. He didn't particularly want to go down there, but James might hear about him wimping out and that was a fate far worse than anything that could happen to him down here, especially with Ivy around. Jathan steeled himself and walked down the staircase slowly. He avoided touching the handrails, because experience had taught him that old wooden staircases were usually very splintery. The young man found himself fiddling with Koma's PokeBall for comfort.

Jathan made sure to watch the beam of light emanating from Ivy's torch as it swept across the room they had entered. It appeared quite small and filled with boxes, and more stairs on the opposite side led out. There was a sudden flash of light that Jathan instinctively flinched away from. When he opened his eyes again, Jathan saw a yellow human-shaped Pokemon standing on two legs, partially hiding behind some of the boxes he had just seen. It was leaning to one side, and it was holding a faintly glowing pendulum that was peacefully swaying from side to side. Jathan couldn't help but focus on the pendulum, and as he did so, his eyes started to flicker. The young man yawned, and found that he was getting irresistably sleepy. It was only Ivy's words that woke him up.

“Any interest in this Hypno?” the woman inquired.

The Pokemon was definitely strong to be able to so casually affect Jathan in such a manner. While it didn't exactly seem like the kind of Pokemon Jathan wanted to train, there was no doubt that it would make a fine sparring partner. And Jathan knew just who he was going to use.

"I think Saya would love to take this one on," Jathan replied. He gingerly stepped off of the stairs and pulled out Saya's PokeBall. The flash illuminated the room temporarily, but it was so quick that Jathan couldn't make out any of the salient features. That didn't matter, though; he had a plan to create some more light in here. Saya bounded out into the room and yipped a hello. She was already prepared for battle, though; Saya and Koma had always gotten on well together and the Bisharp had definitely rubbed off on the Fire-type a bit in regards to attitude towards battle.

"The first thing we need to do is get some light going in here," Jathan said to the fox, "so use your Will-o-Wisp. Don't fire it anywhere though, just keep it floating around you."

Jathan's idea was from the naming of the attack. Will-o-Wisp was normally used in battles as a super-hot orb of fire that danced its way towards the opponent, causing a very painful burn. Jathan was intending to use it much more like the will o wisps of ancient legend, the mischievous sprites that haunted swamps and tried to lure unsuspecting innocents to their doom. Saya could create the fire, but instead of sending it in the direction of the Hypno, she could have it dance in the air above her. This wasn't something that Jathan had ever attempted before, but logic said that it could be done. Besides, Jathan definitely needed a better look at the room before he could start battling in earnest. Saya had much more power than she appeared to. Her Drought ability supercharged her Fire typed attacks. Jathan was hoping that the lack of actual damage that Will-o-Wisp usually caused meant that the fire would be controllable. Until Jathan knew exactly what was present in the room, he couldn't instruct Saya to start flinging high-level fire techniques around.

@ChainReaction01; Most people think Hypno is way worse than Drowzee. Hypno is only an inch shorter than I am. Gender?

    BP#4

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The Hypno didn't move from its spot, absently swinging its pendulum back and forth. Ivy didn't know if the Pokemon was still actively trying to use it—she wouldn't look directly at it. It was hard to keep looking with her peripheral vision because her head kept trying to turn and look head-on.

Jathan, however, was less freaked out about the wild Pokemon. Ivy just didn't want to be left helpless. A run-in with poachers had taught her the dangers of that.

The young man came down the stairs and pulled out a Pokeball, calling out a Pokemon. The bright flash lit up the room for a moment, illuminating the corners of the room until it dimmed down. When it did, a nine-tailed fox was revealed. The room didn't go totally dark after, however. Seemingly emanating from the Ninetales' fur was a soft glow that kept a decent light up—probably due to her Drought ability.

“The first thing we need to do is get some light going in here,” Jathan said. “So use your Will-o-Wisp.”

The fox called up orbs of ghostly fire, shining silvery and red and moving like they were actually trickster spirits and not just flame manipulation. Instead of trying to attack the Hypno, though, they rose slightly higher than the fox's head and hovered around her, fanning out slightly. From each of them, like the Ninetales' body, the fire glowed, casting off light throughout the basement.

The area was really vast, more than she expected. It covered at least half the ground floor of the house—and that was just this room. Support pillars were strewn about at logical intersections, almost uniformly in squares. Cobwebs and spider silk draped from the ceiling, likely hosting Spinarak and Ariados. Heavy-looking crates were also scattered around. Evidence of them being dragged was etched into rivets in the dirt floor. Ivy stamped her foot; it was hard to tell it was dirt at first, since it was so solid.

Something caught her eye then, at the far left side of the basement. At first, her eyes didn't want to make sense of what she was seeing, either due to poor light or natural defense mechanisms. But it was hard to miss the mound of dirt, solidified by time, and the sharp-cut divot into the ground.

The hair on the back of the Ranger's neck stood up. “Those look an awful lot like graves,” she said.

Then, there was a flicker of light. For whatever reason, her attention was drawn back to the Hypno. She chanced a full look at it, standing still partially behind the box. Then, the light made something glimmer, and when she stepped a foot to the left, the Hypno disappeared. She realized then what she was seeing—a Light Screen.

“The Hypno isn't there,” Ivy said, peering around the room.

Without any of them noticing, more nearly-invisible screens had appeared around the basement. With the strange light from the Will-o-Wisp, they flickered and shimmered. Ivy couldn't tell where the Hypno was, even though its reflection could be seen in some of the panels. It was like a hall of mirrors.

Then, the pendulum in its hands began to sway back and forth with more purpose. The Ranger turned away only to face another screen. They were strategically placed. No matter where she looked, it was hard to not see that swinging disk move back and forth. Her eyes started to droop.

“Watch it,” she called, holding an arm up across her eyes. It severely limited her vision, which was bad in the long run, but until they did something, she didn't want to risk falling asleep. “It's using Hypnosis again.”

Something strange was going on here. She just didn't know what it was. What she did know is that she didn't want to be unconscious down here for even one second.
