Easter Capture Contest: Sky Lark

Togekiss quickly commences with her Air Slash as Munchlax opens her mouth in preparation to Snore again. A blade-like funnel of wind whips up when she snaps her wings together, slicing through the air and striking Munchlax. The blue Pokemon recoils from the attack, instinctively curling into a tighter ball against the attack. Having Flinched, the Munchlax is unable to retaliate as Togekiss readies a third Aura Sphere. The attack strikes Munchlax, who lets out a loud snort and flails around a bit, eventually smacking herself in the head with a paw. She soon settled down, falling still in the grass.

The Jubilee pokemon ascended into the sky and hastily performed a U-turn. It knew that it needed to launch its Air Slash before the Munchlax made its move for Eric's plan to work. An azure aura started to surround the Togekiss' wings as it gathered energy for its attack. Rapidly, the Togekiss flapped its wings to release several thin, sharp beams of wind. The concentrated bursts of wind sped viciously through the air and swiped across the sleeping pokemon's body. To Eric's delight, the Munchlax instinctively assumed a fetal position in response.

"What a stroke of luck!" Eric excitedly exclaimed. He smiled as his plans fell into place. The Air Slash had stopped the Munchlax from attacking, and he looked on as another sphere of aura flew straight towards the Munchlax's curled form. The Munchlax was about to retaliate, but to Eric's relief, instead of using Snore, the Munchlax smacked itself using one of its fists.

"Huzzah!" Eric cheered. He knew that the time was right. This time, he didn't need to rummage in his backpack for the right ball. He had already fished out his Hyper Ball previously. Throwing the ball with all his might, Eric planned to give his pokemon an Energy Powder after the Munchlax was successfully captured.

The Hyper Ball strikes Munchlax and draws her inside, shaking only once before falling still. Munchlax has been captured, and Trainer takes a moment to approach the battlefield to collect the Ball before smiling and nodding at you as a congratulations of sorts. Her Serperior disdainfully eyes Togekiss, clearly not happy to be so close to the Flyer, but within a few moments the Ranger and her Pokemon have once again placed about ten feet of space between you and Togekiss.

You eventually continue on, at one point giving Togekiss the second Energy Powder, coming to a large patch of flowers about five minutes later. The air is heavy with the scent of honey and roses, and several yards away you see Butterfree and Beautifly hovering over the colorful flora as they feed upon the nectar. Closer to you is a small yellow Pokemon that appears to be a strange honeycomb-shaped bee with three heads. The Combee doesn’t seem to notice you at first, since its back is to you, but there’s no way to get around it without attracting its attention.

The sleeping pokemon was effortlessly absorbed by the Hyper Ball, which shook only once before signaling that the capture was complete. Eric waited for Trainer to pick up the Hyper Ball, knowing that he’d be able to claim his newly captured pokemon only after the run was over. As she nodded and smiled at him, he couldn’t help feeling hollow inside. Conflicted thoughts swirled around in his head. He had managed to capture a Munchlax, and that would be enough to save his sister from the people who had abducted her. However, he remembered the image of his sister’s limp body and wondered what horrors they had already unleashed upon her. He knew he wanted to strike back somehow, but how would he, an ordinary trainer, be able to do anything against such a powerful organization?

Contemplating, he absentmindedly took out his last packet of Energy Powder and gave it to the Togekiss who had been looking a little under the weather. Eventually, after trudging through some tall grass, the two made their way to a field of flowers. A gentle wind started blowing through the flowers, causing the scent of roses to fill the air. Eric spotted a couple of Butterfree and Beautifly pollinating the flowers a little ways off, and he would later swear that he saw a Roserade blending in with the flowers. Not really looking where he was going, Eric almost bumped into a Combee. Not wanting to bother the pokemon, he slowly turned around and looked at his Togekiss. Silently, he pointed towards a structure in the distance. He wasn’t sure, but he figured that it might be a greenhouse. Slowly, he raised his right hand and started counting off from three. When he reached one, he and his Togekiss would head straight for the building and hopefully not attract the Combee’s attention.

 

As you get ready to try and get past Combee, it abruptly buzzes off, obviously finished with collecting pollen. With no better destination in mind, you continue off in the direction of the greenhouse you’d spotted. You head inside when you arrive and are instantly struck by how balmy it is. However, your attention is drawn down and to the left by movement noticed out of the corner of your eye. It’s a Budew, standing near a Berry bush. As you watch, the little Grass Pokemon stretches up and grabs a Berry with its mouth, which it promptly swallows. Right now it seems more concerned with eating than anything else and doesn’t seem to have noticed you yet.

By some stroke of good fortune, the Combee flew off, completely ignoring Eric and his pokemon. It clearly had better things to do than battle some eager trainer and his freakishly large bird pokemon. Eric sighed. Hopefully, the last two pokemon he would encounter would have the same sentiments. He started walking towards the building, which was not really too far off. The trainer and his pokemon managed to reach the structure in around five minutes, and lo and behold, it was a greenhouse after all. Eric pushed open one of the sliding glass doors open, allowing his Togekiss to enter before he stepped in. He immediately closed the door. “I don’t want any unwanted Bug pokemon to enter and wreak havoc here.” Normally, Eric would’ve held the door open and waited for Trainer as well, but he was rushing to complete his run. It wasn’t that he didn’t believe in gender equality, though. It was just how he was raised, and after all, there was no harm in opening doors for other people.

The first thing Eric noticed upon entering was how large the greenhouse was. It hadn’t seemed that way from the outside. Thinking there would likely be some Grass type pokemon hanging around, Eric started walking along the aisles of potted plants. Suddenly, a tiny Budew grabbed an Oran berry from a nearby bush and swallowed it whole, catching Eric’s attention. He didn’t want to disturb the pokemon’s afternoon snack, so he continued walking along the aisles.

 

You try to move on without attracting Budew’s attention, but your foot hits a small pot lying on the floor, which was hidden by the shadow of a counter. Budew glances over at you and makes a surprised sound when it sees you. It then frowns, appearing uncertain of something. It doesn’t attack, though, at least not yet.

The pot went crashing into the ground and broke as soon as Eric hit it with his foot, causing him to stop dead in his tracks. “Darn it!” he muttered. He slowly turned back to the Budew, which now sported an uncertain look on its face. Eric knew that the Budew was considering whether or not he and his Togekiss were threats. Slowly, he motioned for his Togekiss to come close. “Togekiss, we’re going to try walking away slowly.” He paused to check on the Budew’s movements. Currently, it was just staring at them. Hurriedly, he continued whispering into the Togekiss’ ear. “Hopefully, the Budew won’t want to battle, but if it starts attacking, give it a Sweet Kiss. Ok?” Slowly, the trainer and his pokemon backed away, watching for any indications that the Budew would attack.

 

Budew, for whatever reason, sees your attempt to move on as a threat. It lets out a squeal and starts to sway back and forth, and as it does cottony fluffs start to float away from the bud on its head. Togekiss flies over and tries to placate the upset Baby using her Sweet Kiss. Unfortunately, she ends up flying through the cotton spores in the air, which cling to her body and drastically decrease her wind resistance, slowing her down. Still, she manages to reach Budew before the Pokemon can try to evade and plants a gentle kiss on the Grass Pokemon’s cheek. Budew blinks several times and totters backwards, a scowl crossing its face as it tries to figure out exactly what’s going on.

OOC: If I don't manage to escape, I'd like the Budew to be male

Eric stopped backing away as soon as he observed the Budew tottering back and forth. Without any hesitation, the Grass type uncurled the vines on its head and started shaking them vigorously. Out of the tip of the vines came forth a large quantity of cotton spores that floated gently into the air. It was a strange sight to behold. The balls of fluff simply hung in the air as the Togekiss flew closer to the Budew, gently planting a kiss on its cheeck. However, as the Togekiss performed a U-Turn and returned to Eric's side, a couple of the spores managed to get lodged in the Togekiss' feathers. Eric knew that the spores would tenaciously cling to whatever they touched, but he was too busy formulating a strategy to warn his pokemon. As the balls of fluff stuck to the target, the Togekiss, clearly hindered by the increased air resistance, started flying more slowly. Although the attack greatly reduced the hapless pokémon's speed, it did manage to make the Togekiss very fluffy, which certainly wasn't your average sight. Eric knew that if he stroked his pokemon's feathers, the spores of cotton would fall off, but now was not the time. It seemed as if the Budew felt threatened, and he feared that it might try to attack if he and his pokemon didn't make their escape soon. Eric put his arm around his pokemon's neck and quickly gave his orders. "We're going to try to escape one more time. If it tries to attack, I wan't you to use Captivate. Maybe it'll be less aggressive after you give it some of your charm." With that, he started backing away once more.

 

Budew finally seems to realize that you're not really interested in battling it. It scurries off deeper into the greenhouse, letting you and Togekiss continue on for the final encounter of the run. After searching the greenhouse, you find no other Pokemon and eventually exit back out into the area proper. Almost immediately after leaving you see a small dog-like Pokemon sitting on the path not far away. It doesn't seem to be doing much, just sitting there as if waiting. The Lilipup clearly hasn't seen you yet, but it might if you don't get moving.

The Budew quickly scurried away, knocking a few flower pots over in the process. Eric ran his hands through his pokemon's feathers a couple of times before managing to remove most of the cotton spores. It took him around ten minutes before finishing his task. By that time, however, all the pokemon in the immediate vicinity had learned of the trainer's presence. They had hidden in various places, not wanting to be captured. Try as they might, neither Eric nor his Togekiss found any more pokemon in the greenhouse.

Deciding it was time to move on, Eric gave his Togekiss an affectionate pat on the head. He was a little nervous. He knew that he had only one encounter left before his run ended, so he started mentally preparing himself to see his sister again. The psychic encounter with the Gallade had taken a toll on him. Though he tried assuming the fake smile he carried as he entered the park, he simply couldn't muster the clarity of thought necessary to maintain a fake smile without beaming like an idiot.

As Eric stepped out of the greenhouse, he noticed a puppy sitting off in the distance. It was just waiting, but Eric couldn't help feeling sorry for the pokemon. "What if it's waiting for a pokemon that's never to return?" he asked himself. His mind slowly drifted to the thought of two Snorlax desperately looking for their child. Guilt was starting to blossom in Eric's chest, but he couldn't change the past. He had already selfishly captured the Munchlax, and he had things that he needed to do. Beckoning the Lillipup to come over, he took out the pokedoll from his backpack and looked at it. It was in the form of a Blissey. "The happiness pokemon," Eric muttered. "May you bring happiness to this little one," he whispered to the doll before gently handling it over to the brown puppy in front of him.

He slowly turned away and stoically made his way towards his ranger. One last unfinished task remained.

Lillipup comes over when you beckon, head cocking a little at you. It barks happily when you offer it the PokeDoll, taking the doll in its mouth before bounding off to destinations unknown. Trainer walks over to meet you, her Serperior remaining behind as if bored with the whole thing. You see the serpent slither away in another direction, her interest grabbed by something else, and Trainer glances back to smile at her Pokemon.

“That's Imperious, acting like everything is too lowly to deserve her attention for very long. Anyways, it seems you caught yourself a few Pokemon; you know you can only claim one of them to be judged, right?” You inform Trainer that you'd like Munchlax to be judged and the Ranger nods. “Righty, let's get back to the Outpost and we'll get everything settled, including releasing Deerling back into the Gardens once she's been restored to full health. Hopefully you enjoyed taking part in the contest, and good luck with your results!”

With that, she turns and motions for you to follow her as she begins walking back towards the Outpost for the Gardens.
