The special event the National Park was hosting had already attracted over ten different trainers, three of which I had already taken through the Ruins. So far the people who I had taken had been satisfied with the Pokemon they had captured, so hopefully this would be a good one too.

The person I was taking through was a new trainer, a telltale mark being that she was taking a Chimchar and Haunter into the park. I usually recommended that trainers take fully evolved and really well trained Pokemon into the park, but for new trainers that wasn’t just possible so they had to make do. However, Twyla was in a pretty good position because taking some pretty tough customers in Haunter and Chimchar.

I looked at her name last name and hoped it was a given name and not something she earned through... brain smashing...

My own name was a spin off the old latin word Turannos, or Tyrant. I was pretty sure that if I delved deeper into my family history that the name would have been warranted. I filed this information as something to ask her about later. I put on all my equipment and stepped into the teleport. A moment later I was at the Enigma Ruins, so called because we rangers knew very little about them.

Twyla hadn’t yet arrived so I settled into wait for her to appear.

Oh boy, I thought. This is gonna be fun. It was my first time in the Park and I was excited. I decided to take two of my four Pokemon, one of which was a gift. I smiled. I loved getting gifts. The littlest things made me happy. I learned to live with having very little all my life. Not very often did I get something that was a treasure to me, but junk to others.

I looked behind me at my Pokemon. My Chimchar and Haunter were messing with each as they walked and floated. Unlike me, I made sure that they have things that I didn’t. Spoiled is the first word that pops in my head when I look at them. But then again, I’m the one to blame.

I focused my attention on where we’re going and continued to walk down the path that led to the portal that would lead me to the Enigma Ruins.

When I got there, the Portal wasn’t what I had expected. It was a flat circle on the ground in a outside shack. It looked like it belonged in the eighties, but how am I to complain?

I called my Pokemon back to their balls and stepped into the Portal. When I was able to gather myself, I was standing in front of a lab type looking building. I laughed. Man, could this trip get any worse?

A few minutes after I got there a young woman teleported next to me. She was almost half a foot shorter than I and she was dressed in a white tank top and blue shorts. She looked about excitedly at her new surroundings. I introduced myself. “Hi, you must be Twyla. I’m Gaius Tyrannius, and I’ll be your ranger for this expedition. Let me log us in and we can get this started.”

I turned away from the girl and swiped my ID through the scanner next to the iron gates protecting the Enigma Ruins. The scanner beeped and the gates swung open. Before us was a collection of stone that was once a bustling temple or metropolis, but was now a massive ruin.

I walked forward and led us past the first archway, that was once the gate to the ruins. Soon as we passed under it the ruins faded away and were replaced by a massive lake before us. The Enigma Ruins had magical properties imbued in it so that it cast illusions of other areas of the park.

Floating in the water was a jellyfish-like Pokemon with two tentacles and red poison sacks on the side of its head. “You want a Tentacool?” I asked Twyla.

I stared at my Ranger as he turned away and opened the gate to the Enigma Ruins. Well, don’t shake then. I won’t lose one wink of sleep. I thought as the gates swung open and the man escorted me in. As we stepped inside the scene shifted and became a giant lake. In the water was a Tentacool. It stared at us with beady little eyes.

My Ranger turned toward me as I stared at the water Pokemon.

    “You want a Tentacool?”

I snorted and unclipped a Poke Ball from my belt. “Sure, Wynaut.”

I called out my Haunter and watched as the water Pokemon’s eyes narrowed into slits. I smiled at it. My Ranger just stood there waiting to see what happened next. I shook my head and looked at Haunter.

“Use Shadow Punch, Haunter!” Before I was finished, the Ghost Pokemon sprang into action.

Twyla snorted and unclipped one of the Pokeballs from her belt. “Sure, why not?” She responded archly. The Pokemon she summoned forth was her basic Pokemon Haunter, a Poison and Ghost type. The Tentacool took notice of the new Pokemon and watched it closely, knowing that a battle between the two Poison types was about to happen, one in which it didn’t hold the advantage.

“Use Shadow Punch, Haunter!” the young trainer called to her Pokemon.

The purple head and arms of Haunter lurched forward to attack. His three-fingered right hand curled up and turned a dark purple. The Ghost floated over to Tentacool quite fast and raked his shadowy claws through the body of Tentacool.

The Water Pokemon flashed its two tentacle about from the pain, but it stood its ground. As the Haunter retreated back to its owner, the Tentacool raised both gray tentacles skyward. It started to wave its appendages about as it erected a barrier to raise its defenses.

Barrier was a move that would raise the defense of Tentacool by two stages, meaning that any physical attacks would do less damage than normal, somewhere around half. While the move did help Tentacool, it wasn’t necessary a bad thing for Haunter. Haunter had low attack and mostly relied on their special attack, which was much higher, and since Haunter mostly knew special attacks it wouldn’t inhibit its battle moves that much.

After Haunter had returned to me the Tnetacool raised both tentacles and waved them
skyward, forming a barrier that up its defence. I shook my head. That won’t do it much good since my Pokemon mostly had special attack moves.

I took a few minutes to think before I attacked. Turning to face my Pokemon, I told her what to do.

    “Haunter, Shadow Ball!”

Haunter cocked her head in question. I nodded. She smiled evilly and jumped at the Tentacool. The Water Pokemon didn’t have enough time to move out of the way before Haunter launched the attack.

Twyla looked at the battle and decided to take a few moments to thing her plan through, never a bad idea. She must have thought of something because she turned to her POkemon and said, “Haunter, use Shadow Ball!”

Shadow Ball was Haunter’s go to Ghost move. The attack was boosted by STAB and had a base power of eighty, making it a popular Ghost move for many Pokemon. The Haunter smiled evilly at Tentacool and held its hands forward. An orb of black and purple energy started to grow immediately, a sure sign of a Dark or Ghost attack. It took only a second or two before the attack reached the size of a football, and Haunter fired it at Tentacool a moment later.

The Tentacool’s eyes widened in surprise at the incoming attack, but it wasn’t able to dodge from the attack. The attack sent it spinning back a couple of inches, but the Pokemon recovered almost instantly and splashed both tentacles against the surface of the water. The water rippled and moved forward at a high speed towards the Haunter.

Just as the ripple reached the shore it formed into a small ball of water that hit Haunter, drenching the Pokemon thoroughly. Despite both Pokemon taking attacks the Haunter was still in a much better position than its counter part. I was confident that Twyla would be able to make a capture attempt soon.

Haunter sent the water Pokemon reeling. But it recivered almost instantly. The Tentacool sent wave of water at haunter. Just as it reach the shore, It formed a ball and drenched the Ghost Pokemon.

I shook my head and contemplated on what to do next. Barrier use still up so Physical Attacks were out. I’m just gonna have to use another Special Attack. I smiled and turned toward my Pokemon.

I loved my Pokemon. I may have only been a Trainer for a short while, but I know that my Pokemon love me back. I had the strongest urge to stop the battle so Haunter wouldn’t get hurt, but I wanted a Tentacool. I love Poison and Ice Pokemon. But I might as well get this over with. I sighed. As if sensing my discomfort, Haunter turned and gave me a reassuring smile.

“Alright, Haunter, I want you to use Hypnosis. But don’t make it look too obvious. Okay?”

She nodded and focused on the Tentacool. Once again, she prepared to attack.

Twyla saw how the battle was going and seemed dismayed that her Pokemon was taking damage. Haunter had only sustained a Water Pulse so far, but the Tentacool did have the ability to hit it hard. Plus she might have to use it on other Pokemon in the area.

“Alright, Haunter, I want you to use Hypnosis, but don’t make it look too obvious. Okay?”

The Haunter turned to its owner and gave her a nod that she understood. This was a good thing to see, despite being a new trainer, Twyla had clearly formed a good bond with her Pokemon. This would certainly help her in the long run as a trainer. It was also a smart move for her to use Hypnosis. Not only would the Tentacool not be able to attack, but it would help her capture the Pokemon.

Haunter looked intensely at the Tentacool until the other Pokemon raised its eyes to meet the gaze of Haunter. It was a trap of course, soon as the Tentacool looked into Haunter’s eyes the Ghost Pokemon fired the ray of light that signaled Hypnosis.

Soon as the rays hit Tentacool the Pokemon fell asleep. It’s soft snoring, which sounded like gurgling filled the air. It started to drift lazily in the water, making it an easier target for Haunter to target with one of its attacks.

I smiled and looked around me. The pool took up most of the open space. The water use a striking blue color. It shimmered like a sapphire. Trees surrounded the pond and the sun casted a light upon the clearing. The trees stood about 20 feet tall and had lush green leaves. Some fluttered to the ground. A couple rocks sat at the border of the water. The water lighly lapped at them, turning them dark grey.

I shook my head and focused on the Pokemon. Haunter stared at the Tentacool until it looked up. The Hypnosis rays hit the Pokemon and pit it to sleep. The Tentacool fell asleep, floating in the water.

Haunter smiled at me with a look of triumphant on her face. I smiled back and saluted her.

“Alright, Haunter, lets try to finish this off. Use Dream Eater.”

Haunter smile turned into a grin and she nodded before turning back toward the pond.

Twyla smiled at the sleeping Tentacool, it was the smile of a predator looking at its next meal. “Alright, Haunter, let’s try to finish this off. Use Dream Easter.”

The Haunter grinned wildly and turned to the Tentacool. Dream Eater was one of its signature moves, only a few Pokemon were known to use the move, and Haunter was one such Pokemon.

The Haunter floated over to the sleeping Pokemon and placed his clawed hand by the head of the wild Pokemon. Haunter slowly inserted her ghost hands into the head of Tentacool and closed her eyes, which started to glow a deep and dark purple in color. A few seconds passed before the dark aura around Haunter’s eyes spread to the body of Tentacool.

Immediate the body of Tentacool thrashed about as Haunter delved deeper into the Pokemon’s subconscious. As Haunter started to devour the dreams of Tentacool the Pokemon’s movements become sluggish and less coordinated.

By contrast the wounds that Haunter had sustained started to heal until the were fully gone. Was the dream was complete ate Haunter’s eyes snapped open and she retreated. Tentacool was still sleeping, but it was struggling to stay afloat, the waves almost complete overlapping it.

“It’s on very low health,” I cautioned Twyla. “You’ll have to catch the Pokemon now.”

Haunter floated over to the Pokemon placed her hands on its head. After a few seconds, the Tentacool started to squirm and thrash about as Haunter ate its dream. The more she ate, the fater her wounds closed. The Pokemon continued to thrash about before it went slack.

A few minutes later, she pulled back and floated over to me. The Tentacool was stuggling to stay above the water.

“It’s very low on health,” My Ranger said. “You’ll have to catch the Pokemon now.”

I smiled and jumped in the air. “Yippee. You did a great job Haunter.”

She smiled at me as I pulled out her Poke Ball. I called her back and piulled Out a regular ball.

    “Alright, lets do this.”

I threw the Poke Ball and watched as at popped open witha bright light.

Twyla was ecstatic at the way the battle was developing. “Yippee! You did a great job, Haunter.” She pulled out a Pokeball and recalled her Ghost Pokemon. Soon as the Pokemon was safely inside the device she pulled out a Parkball and chucked it at the Water Pokemon.

The Parkball hit Tentacool and popped open, the red plasma sucking up the Tentacool. The ball rocked gently in the waters for a few seconds before settling down with a soft noise. I retrieved the caught Pokemon, dropped it in my bag, and returned to Twyla.

“Nice job there, easy capture,” I congratulated her. “Do you want to move on now or take a break?”

The ParkBall rocked back and forth in the water before settling down. I squealed and clapped my hands. Gaius retrieved the ParkBall and dropped it in his bag before turning to face me.

“Nice job there, easy capture,” he said. “Do you want to move on now or take a break?”

I stopped clapping my hands and cocked my head at him. “You don’t smile much do you?”
I didn’t wait for an answer. “Lets keep going. Lead the way.”

I clapped my hands again and laughed. “I caught the Pokemon!!!”

“You don’t smile much, do?” Twyla said out of nowhere at me. This took me by surprise but simply shrugged in response. Taking people through the National Park wasn’t exactly the most exciting thing to do. It was for the most part boring, outside of a good battle or a funny Pokemon that just wanted to stick around.

Twyla didn’t really pay attention to my response as she continued her celebration. “Let’s keep going. Lead the way. I caught the Pokemon.”

With her cries of joy ringing in my ears I continued to lead us along the shore path. When the Enigma Ruins didn’t change to a new area I knew that another Pokemon had to be near here somewhere. I started to look about and saw the next Pokemon facedown in the sand. I knew it was a Pokemon because of its orange shell, which only a few people had. Another clue was the blue showing through the sand.

“There is a Squirtle over there,” I said to Twyla, “you can try and catch it if you want.”

Gaius shrugged and continued to lead us down the sandy path. The scenery didn’t change so I could only assume that it would be another water Pokemon. I shook my head and looked around me. Sand was everywhere. The pond was behind us and sand lay before us. Trees towered shot into the sky and the sun beet down on us.

I almost jumped out of my skin when Gaius spoke.

“There is a Squirtle over.” He pointed out where an orange shell stuck out of the sand. “You can try to catch it if you want.”

I thought about it for a moment before shaking my head no. “Nah. I’m not that big on water Pokemon. Lets keep moving. Besides, I can always buy a doll if it decides to be a P.A.B.”

“Nah,” Arctic said, after a moment of thought. “I’m not that big on Water Pokemon. Let’s keep moving. Besides, I can always buy a doll if it decides to be a P.A.B.”

I raised my eyebrows at her last comment. Only a few people knew exactly what that term meant, so I was wondering where she had learned it from. I was going to ask her just that when the Squirtle looked up at us. As it studied us with an intense look I thought for sure it would charge us, but instead it buried its head back in the sand and let us go.

“Come on, let’s continue along this river for a little but until the place changes or we run into another Pokemon.”

I lead us past the Pokemon and to the small river. The river was fairly small in size if compared to most, but still deep enough that one would have to swim to cross it. Just as we reached its edge a small white and furry Pokemon popped out of the water. It had a tongue hanging out of its mouth and a small horn, it was a Seel.

“You want adorable on your team?” I asked Twyla.

Gaius raised his eyebrows at my last comment. But didn’t say anything about it.

The Squirtle poked its head out of the sand and stared at us. Finally deciding that we weren’t worth it, it buried its head back in the sand.

“Come on, let’s continue along this river for a little but until the place changes or we run into another Pokemon.”

He turned and lead us past the Pokemon and to a small river. The water lapped a little at the bank and looked cool. It was just deep enough to swim across. The light reflected off it and made it look beautiful. The path wound around the river and along the tree line. A couple boulders sat on the bank for Pokemon to lounge on. The scenery was gorgeous.

Just as we reached its edge, a small white and furry Pokemon popped out of the water. Its tongue was sticking out of its head like a dog. It was a Seel.

“You want adorable on your team? Gaius asked.

Turned and looked at him with a stunned look on my face. “Are you out of your mind? That thing is not adorable. I would roast and eat that if I could. It would look great on a bed of salad. And no I don’t want the Seel.”

I turned to the Pokemon and stuck out my tongue. “You better get lost before I make you into a three course meal.”

Twyla looked at me with an incredulous expression. “Are you out of your mind? That thing is not adorable. I would roast and eat that if I could. It would look great on a bed of salad, and no, I don’t want the Seel.” She turned to the Seel and stuck her tongue at out it. “You better get lost before I make you into a three course meal.”

The Seel barked in alarm at Twyla’s bloodthirsty comments and dived underwater in a hurry. It had took her at her word and decided it would not be in its best interest to stick around. I shrugged at her comment and turned to walk along the shore as we were doing before running into the Seel.

We continued along the banks for a few minutes before I heard a soft snoring, hard to hear over the rushing water. I looked for and found the source of the sound, a Barboach sleeping behind a rock.

    “What about a Barboach?”

The Seel barked in alarm at my bloodthirsty comments nd dived back into the water. Gaius shrugged and we continued along the banks for a few minutes before a soft snoring sounded through the air. It was hard to hear over the roar of the water.

Gaius looked around for the Pokemon before pointed it out to me.

    “What about a Barboach?”

I sighed and to myself and tried to hold back a scream. These Water Pokemon were pissing me off. I like them, but Poison and Ice were more my type. I breathed deep before walking over to where the Barboach was sleeping.

It was behind a rock. Its chest rose and fell with each breath. I would have smiled but I was too pissed off at the continuos line of Water Pokemon. I cocked my head at it and willed it to wake up. ‘Cause if it did I was going to stomp on it.

I turned away from the Pokemon and faced Gaius. “Would I get fined for stomping on the Barboach?” I waved my hand in the air. “Never mind. Lets keep moving.”
