    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ivy just blinked as Jathan abruptly cut the psychic connection. She was left in a dark room as the vision of the Trainer's childhood home faded into black.

“Well,” she said to the presence she could feel behind her. “That was a little... unexpected.”

Her mind was still swirling as she processed what Jathan had told her. As strange as it was though, every little thing she remembered noticing sort of fit into place and made sense. It definitely explained Jathan's actions if Chainy promised retribution for misbehaving. Then she snorted. As if she would tattle on him to his older brother.

“On the contrary,” Haji said as he came up beside her. The purple cat sat and looked up at her. “I could have guessed as much. And you do tell much to James,” he added as he reached out with his front paws and stretched.

The world blurred back into color, and when it focused she found herself on that hill again with all the other Pokemon, watching the fight. A couple of Joltik had gotten closer to them. She could barely hear their encouraging squeaks over the cries of the others in the crowd.

“Okay, you might be right about that one, but I'm still not telling. Chainy'll have to work up the guts to tell me himself,” she said to her Psychic partner out loud.

As much fun as it would've been to tease her coworker, that was a little too cruel. She found the information a little odd, but now that she looked back on it, that did sort of explain some of his erratic behavior too. Most of the time she was too brash and tough, ending up intimidating potential dates. That was the Ranger part of her. She wasn't delicate. She had tried once and failed. It would be interesting to see how this played out. That was, if he ever manned up to ask her on a date.

“And look at Jathan out there,” she said as she pointed. There was a little bit of a laugh in her voice. “He's pretending like nothing else exists. I might not tease Chainy, but Jathan is fair game as far as I'm concerned.”

Beside her, she felt the amusement of Haji grin.

Jathan commanded Koma to do something, but Ivy didn't catch it over the crowd. However, she saw the Bisharp respond. He took his fist and slammed it to the ground, knocking the rocks in front of him out of the way. The remaining rocks sort of made a decorative isle around him. The Dark-type rose slowly, and then he began to move.

A soft glow that turned harsher formed around his fists and the horn on his head, and his limbs jerked in a controlled yet purposeful rhythm. The sun glinted off his armor as he seemed to dance around, and he certainly looked more dangerous and confident as he continued.

“Must be a Swords Dance,” she said absently. She knew a lot of Pokemon could use the technique, but all of them did it a little different.

Then, the Bisharp waited for his foe to make a move. She wasn't completely sure what he and Jathan had planned, but she could guess. They were both watching the Scizor carefully. She was still moving around slightly, like she was waiting for an opening to move. She looked a little ticked off still, so that Taunt must've been bothering her yet. That could help Jathan, but it could also make her more savage the longer it went on.

Ivy saw the red bug narrow her eyes, and then she shot off, slashing out with the claws on her arms as she did. Koma seemed to be waiting for this though, as before she could hit him, he disappeared from range. He flashed in behind her then and quickly lashed out with a strike of his own, clipping her across the wings that kept her mobile.

The Scizor tried to turn and get revenge, but she only was able to clip Koma before the momentum of his hit sent her spiraling to the dirt floor. Landing in a small cloud of smoke, Ivy heard some of the crowd collectively gasp. Then, they started a slow, deep chant. It started off quiet but then rose in volume, sounding off like a big base drum in a steady beat.

The red bug heard and shot a glare in Koma's direction. With narrowed eyes, she pushed herself up by her claws. Then, she blurred, lunging out at the Dark-type with flashing limbs. She struck once, twice, three times in rapid succession, the swipes becoming more powerful with each hit. She was fueled by her rage stemming from being embarrassed like that.

Ivy wasn't sure she was going to quit, but Koma started to move, and as he managed to dodge to the side, the Scizor went staggering as her cuts quit connecting with him. She stumbled across the arena before she could slow herself down, and by then she was breathing heavier. The Ranger saw some of that rage subside, and her movements stopped being so jerky. The after-effects of Koma's Taunt must've been wearing out.

The bug was getting worn down too. There were a few more scratches and dents in her armor then there had been at the start of the battle. If Jathan played his cards right, he may be able to wear her out more and attempt a capture swiftly.

Re: Individual RP (Moved): Chainy (Woods)

(OOC: This goes without saying, but reminders never hurt: remember that Guillotine isn't an OHKO in the Park.)

I could almost hear Ivy giggling and feel her staring at me. I still couldn't decide whether telling her had been the smartest thing to do, or even the right thing, but Dual promised to take responsibility and keep me safe from my probably-soon-to-be-irate older brother. That meant a lot - despite the fact that the Gallade was closer to James than he was to me, I knew we shared a special bond, and I was pretty sure that if I ever got into a spat with James Dual would come to my rescue. Of course, the specifics of the situation would be involved, but the Pokemon wouldn't blindly go to help my brother over me.

Still, I supposed that the way Ivy and Haji weren't contacting either myself or Dual meant that nothing more was going to be said about it right now, which was perfectly fine with me. I'd like nothing more than to flee back to the farm and hide under my bedsheets for a while.

No time for that now, though. Koma thrust his chest forwards as the Swords Dance finished. The white light around his cuirass, helmet, and gauntlets faded from sight but I knew the sharpening effects were still there. Hopefully the attack increase would help penetrate the Scizor's tough carapace. Normally, I would have commanded an attack increase by now, but the speed and ferocity of the Bug-type's fighting style had necessitated multiple speed boosts for the Bisharp. He wasn't fast normally, but under the effects of two stacked Rock Polishes he should be able to move like a blur.

Koma returned to a more balanced stance, holding his fists apart in what looked similar to a basic boxing stance. He eyed the Scizor off and the Bug-type returned the glare. Koma's Taunt was apparently still affecting the Wild Pokemon though because she started flying towards Koma. When the Sharp Sword Pokemon was in range, the Scizor swung one of her claws at his midsection, but Koma disappeared in a blurry flash, anime-style. Still, the Scizor was fast too. She turned around and swung the other claw to her right, where Koma had just appeared. He flashed away again though, preparing a down-hand smash, but the Scizor just managed to block it. Koma blurred away one last time, managing to get behind the Bug-type. He threw a straight jab that drilled into both of the Scizor's beating wings. The Scizor screeched and flailed at Koma, but she didn't land more than a glancing hit before she collapsed into the ground. A small cloud of dust poofed into the air, hiding the Scizor for a couple of seconds. The crowd of Wild Pokemon all gasped, and for a second I thought they were about to run in and rescue their queen.

What actually happened was pretty close to the opposite. They all started to chant, using whatever noises they could make. The insects squeaked, the mammals barked, and the larger Pokemon muttered and roared. It started off soft and repetitive, but the chant became primal, music to be heard when two warriors were battling with life and pride on the line. My long-term plan had been to send Dual in to finish the Scizor off, but I knew I couldn't do that now. The Gallade would probably be angry with me, but I couldn't disrespect these Pokemon and their customs. Besides, if I did pull Koma back, he'd be just as pissed-off as Dual.

    Ree-roo-ah, the crowd chanted. Ree-roo-ah.

The Scizor pinned Koma with a look of pure rage, and she got to her feet without breaking eye contact at all. She launched a sudden attack, and Koma was caught by surprise. I was too - the Bug-type's ferocity was growing. Perhaps that Taunt hadn't been the best idea. The Scizor's left claw scraped across Koma's cuirass, startling him. Her right claw crashed into his side, winding him. Her final strike was a straight jab, missing all of the blades on his armour and catching him just below the throat. This caused the Bisharp to slide backwards, but thankfully he remained on his feet.

Ree-roo-HAH! Ree-roo-HAH! The crowd's volume and intensity rose. I started to feel a bit jumpy; I was sure that the crowd wouldn't interfere, but if something went wrong I didn't think my team of three would be able to hold off all of the hundred-or-so Wild Pokemon that were watching this battle. Even with Ivy and her Pokemon I didn't think it would be possible.

Unfortunately for the Scizor, the knockback from her attack gave Koma the half a second he needed to regain control. He ducked and dodged from side to side, evading all of the Scizor's strikes and slashes. Finally, he spun around his opponent, allowing her to stumble tiredly past him. I could tell she wanted to stop, but the battle had gone on for a long time and the fatigue was catching up to her. Koma was faring better, but not by much - he only had a couple large attacks left in him. He wasn't showing it externally, which was a psychological advantage, but I knew better. It was a survival technique to appear stronger and in better condition than you actually were, and being a warrior Pokemon Koma would rather collapse than admit he was fatigued, but I could tell he was running low on energy. I couldn't say I blamed him, either.

When the Scizor managed to stop herself by digging her claws into the earth, she took a moment to collect herself. I noticed that her moves were a lot less jagged, and when she turned to regard Koma most of the rage had subsided. She appeared to be herself again, which was good. Her vicious attacks were starting to worry me. Still, if the Taunt had ended and she was an "honourable warrior" like I thought she was, there was no way she'd be able to deny a direct challenge, despite the banged-up condition she was in. Thankfully, Koma had one strong move left, one I'd been saving. Now was the time to use it.

Reeeooh-UH, reeeooh-HAH! the chanting got even stronger.

"Great job, Koma. I want you to charge up a Guillotine, full-strength, but hold back when you actually use it. I don't want this Scizor fainting, not after all the work we've put into battling her," I ordered.

Koma grunted and held his right arm diagonally out from his side. The gauntlet started to glow white, and streams of energy flowed up to the backwards-pointing blades above his wrists. A sharp lance made of pure energy began slowly extending in the opposite direction of the gauntlet-blade - it looked a little like the blade was the hilt of the sword, and the lance was the sword's blade. When the sword reached a little under a metre in length Koma moved his arm so that the Guillotine was right in front of his face and pointing up into the air. He braced his arm with his other hand and started growling.

ROAH-HII, ROAH-HII! the audience started yelling. The noise set me on edge, although I had to admit the beat and the noises matched the mood of the battle perfectly. It was almost like the song was predicting the battle or that it had been designed to match the fight, move by move.

On the crowd's chant, more white energy poured out of both of Koma's hands, streaming up into and along the blade much faster than before. The blade didn't seem to grow, though. For a split second, I was worried. Was the move too much for the Bisharp? Had I over-taxed him and commanded a move that required too much stamina?

Fortunately, my worries were ill-conceived. The Bisharp roared at the same time as the crowd, and the blade exploded in size, becoming a little wider but a whole lot longer. It was now a little over three metres in length. The only energy blade I'd ever seen longer than that was a Psycho Cut that Dual had summoned to fight off a Kyogre once (I hadn't actually seen it, but he'd shown me part of the memory). I couldn't hold back a grin - Koma truly was my proudest result as a Breeder.

Koma roared once again, directly challenging the Scizor. He waved the fully-formed Guillotine around, and the lance hummed as it moved through the air. Koma didn't appear to have any problems wielding the Guillotine; since it was made of energy, it had no appreciable mass and so had no (or at least very little) weight.

    "Now!" I yelled.

Koma kicked off the dirt, causing a huge chunk of earth to fly into the air. He blurred towards the Scizor, the huge shaft of light leading the way, pointed directly at the Steel-type. My hope was that the immensely powerful attack would be able to negate the Scizor's natural defenses, but that the Steel-type's Normal-resistance would keep the Guillotine from doing too much damage, in addition to my command that Koma not go all-out. I gritted my teeth and clenched my fists as the crowd's chants grew to fever pitch.

    RA-OH RAHI RAHIKI!

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The crowd continued its chanting, and Ivy found it hard to hear what Jathan is saying. Trying not to disturb any of the Pokemon concentrated on the battle, she lifted herself up from her spot and slid down the hill a bit, trying to get closer to the edge of the arena. She scooted around the birds that were all grouped together and avoided an agitated looking Zangoose.

She finally settled a few feet from the dirt, about as far as she would dare go. She ended up next to a large, purple Arbok. He turned to look at her with narrowed eyes for an instant, but seeing as she wasn't a threat, he turned his decorative hood back toward the field and settled his shifting coils. Haji came up next to her like he wasn't bothered at all.

From this close, she could hear what Jathan was telling his Pokemon. “Great job, Koma,” he said. “I want you to charge up a Guillotine, full-strength, but hold back when you actually use it. I don't want this Scizor fainting, not after all the work we've put into battling her.”

Guillotine was a dangerous move. If it wasn't performed correctly, and sometimes even when it was, the force could knock a Pokemon flat out, even if it had been well-rested. Jathan would have to be careful on this one. Of course, he probably knew his own Pokemon's limits, so he knew Koma would be careful. Still, it worried her. The Scizor could do something to affect the move too.

In fact, she was doing something, Ivy noticed. It didn't appear so, especially when most of the attention was now on the Dark-type, who was glowing. The Ranger could see the concentrated look in the red bug's eyes, though.

A thin line of dust was circling her. As she looked closer, she saw bits of dust and small rocks and other debris floating in that ring. It grew in size as she focused, and the grass nearest to the border on that side of the field was shaking, almost being sucked out of ground by the pull of the wind. That wasn't all either. One of Scizor's claws was starting to glow a faint silver color. She was charging up for something, but she was waiting, proof that she was thinking clearer now that the Taunt had worn off.

Koma stretched out one of his arms, and it began to glow brighter. A blade formed on the end, reaching out to almost touch the ground. It wasn't solid, meaning it was purely energy. Then, he brought it up in front of him, sort of like a cross guard. It flared again in size as he was urged on by the crowd.

He held the beam steady, but Ivy couldn't tell how much it was actually taxing him. Pokemon had a funny habit of not showing weakness like that, especially when in battle. Haji had done it on a few occasions.

Koma waited for Jathan to give the signal. Then, he blurred as he streaked forward, aimed right at the Scizor.

The red bug was waiting. The tight control she had on the wind was unleashed, and Ivy felt the flare of power as the wind responded. It whistled as it shot up in a cyclone just as Koma prepared to strike. Then, the flash on her claw burned brighter as she rose it in front of herself, using the other arm to brace it. There was a flash of light, and it consumed the whole field as the two warriors collided.

There was nothing but silence for a few seconds as the light died down. Ivy held her breath, knowing full well that when it faded there could be two unmoving Pokemon on that dirt floor. When color returned, she got a good look.

Scizor came into focus first due to her red armor. It wasn't completely red anymore, though. The dents and scratches had faded parts of it, and she was caked with dust and dirt. The red bug had collapsed to one knee. She was leaning on it heavily, and one of her arms was trying to hold her weight in the upright position. She was breathing hard, but she wasn't knocked out. That was a plus.

About six feet away, Koma looked much the same. He had fallen to the ground in a prone position, however, knocked away from his opponent from the blast. Despite the new dents his armor showed off, he looked satisfied, like he was proud of his work. He was starting to move, but he had yet to get up.

Hopefully Jathan could do something before the Scizor gathered enough energy to act. Right now it was a race to see who would recover first.

(OOC: If this caps, just end the run, although knowing my luck it won't xD)

As Koma blasted off, I looked over at the Scizor and noticed that it too had been charging an attack. A tubular shield of wind was spinning around the Bug-type. I didn't know that Scizor could manipulate air currents, although seeing as Scyther was Flying-type, it made sense. Small rocks and clumps of grass flew through the air, held aloft by nothing but the air pressure. More worryingly, the Scizor's right claw was glowing silver. I could tell that something big was coming - possibly even something that was big enough to match Koma's Guillotine.

Ro-haka, rorokaah, arough-rivar-rika, the crowd continued to chant, and the primal noises seemed to be getting quicker and more breathless. I couldn't help but draw my own breath in as well; it was entirely possible that the outcome of this battle would be decided in the next ten seconds.

Just before Koma made contact, the Scizor threw its left (non-glowing) claw forwards and the wind blasted towards the incoming Bisharp. The Air Cutter sliced at Koma's armour, scoring a few slices, but he ignored the attack and powered through it. The Scizor held its silvery claw up to catch Koma's strike. The world seemed to slow down as the Guillotine attack flashed down and the Scizor's claw moved up. The crowd continued to chant, further setting me on edge.

    Roko-ha, roko-hoo, ranou-ranki-riHA!

On the crowd's loud yell, Koma's attack made contact with the Scizor's, and a bright light completely blinded me. I had to look away - even looking in the general direction of the battlefield caused my eyes to sting. I took the opportunity to inspect the crowd a little bit closer. At least the crowd's chanting had calmed down to reflect the pause in the battle. There was a group of Eevee, all watching the battlefield enthusiastically. I remembered how the first time I had come to the Park I was looking for an Eevee. I was ultimately unsuccessful, but that was okay with me, because if I had been I would never have bred Cole, my Jolteon. Further along was a Kecleon - more memories of past mistakes - and I thought I even caught a glimpse of a Celebi, although I couldn't be sure.

Finally, the light faded, and I was surprised at what I saw. The Scizor was on one knee, and she was messed up. Her armour was dented and cut in places, and the parts that were intact were covered in mud, blood, or other equally foul liquids. And although her eyes were still burning with the same strength from before, she was breathing hard and she looked like she was on her last wind. I almost chuckled despite the situation - bad pun. Yuck.

Eruu-rahu-rahu-ro, reruu-rehu-rahu, the surrounding Pokemon started up again now that they could see their queen.

I ignored the sounds, though. I was too busy being shocked at Koma's condition. Granted, he looked a little better off than the Scizor, but he was laying on his stomach, looking towards the Scizor. He must have been blasted backwards by the retaliatory force of the Wild Pokemon's move. I was a little confused about what happened until I thought about it carefully. Guillotine was a purely brute-force offensive move, without worrying about subtleties like accuracy or responding to counter attacks. Normally the Guillotine would be a one-hit knockout move, so because retaliatory attacks were next to impossible, Koma poured all of his energy into the power blade. That would explain how he would have been so off-guard and the Scizor was able to launch him backwards.

Furthermore, I realised in retrospect that both of the Scizor's moves were Special moves, meaning that they would have bypassed his now-astronomical physical defenses. Normally Scizor's long-range attacks were regarded as useless because of its mammoth attack power, but under these circumstances long-range attacks were a viable option. I wish I had thought of that, but even if I had it's not like I could have done anything - Bisharp couldn't learn Calm Mind or Amnesia or any other of those reinforcement moves.

My mind started working even faster. I knew that whoever got off the next hit would be in a better position. If this was a straight battle, I'd just command a Sucker Punch and wait for victory, but the Scizor had the upper hand because I didn't want her to faint. Just the opposite - I wanted to keep her conscious. I wouldn't have minded taking that last sliver of health off of the Wild Pokemon, probably with Fury Cutter, but in the time it would take Koma to get to his feet and prepare the attack the Scizor would already be making her move. That meant I'd need a move that Koma could use while laying down. He didn't get access to any long-range moves. Except for one. Thankfully, it was just the move I needed.

"Koma, quick! Hit Scizor with a Thunder Wave!" I yelled.

The Bisharp laid his arms on the ground, pointing them towards the Scizor. He took a deep breath, and one by one small sparks began crawling around his gauntlets and up his arms. They slowly grew in size from sparks to long snakes of electricity. Koma groaned, and the series of snakes started whipping across the ground towards the Scizor. Hopefully they'd wrap around the Bug-type like vines and spread paralysis across its body. My heartbeat rose, and like magic the chanting started to do so as well. I pulled out a Super Ball from my backpack and nearly dropped it onto the ground because my hands were slippery with sweat. I dried them on my shirt and prepared to throw the ball. After the adventure that had been this Expedition, I was ready to go home.

    Ro-haka, ro-haku rehu rehu RAKA!

Jathan had to act fast if he was going to strike the Scizor before she recovered. She was at a slight advantage while being mostly on her feet; Koma was still laying on the ground. However, the Trainer managed to call his move just in time.

“Koma, quick! Hit Scizor with a Thunder Wave!” he called.

With a motion accompanied by what probably was a grunt, the Dark-type shifted so his other arm was pointing ahead of him, matching the other. Then he concentrated, and sparks clacked along his gauntlets. They grew in size, coiling and sizzling as they trailed along his arms. He gave another push of effort, and the streaks shot out toward the Scizor.

The jolts struck the red bug before she could recover from the other attack. The electricity wrapped around her limbs with flashes of yellowed light. She flinched, and the arm that was helping to prop her up gave out. Unbalanced, she toppled over her bent knee and landed on the ground with a solid thunk. The bolts threaded between her wings and all around her, stunning her for the moment.

Jathan chose that moment to pull out a Super Ball from his pack. He waited a few seconds and then tossed the device. The crowd went silent as the ball sailed through the air, waiting to see what the outcome of the battle would be.

The ball made a loud ding against the metal of the bug's armor. Then, she was engulfed in that red light and sucked up into the device. It shook weakly and then plopped onto the dirt floor, going still as it lit up in the center and pinged. The sound echoed in the arena, and then the crowd erupted into cheer.

Ivy was smiling as she got up, hearing the hoots and calls of all the Pokemon in the stands. She made it out onto the floor and over to where Koma and the Super Ball laid, smiling at the Dark-type as she pocketed the captured Scizor.

“Nice job out there,” she said. Koma made a shrugging motion as if to say 'no problem'. She could tell he was pleased though. It was radiating from him. Jathan came up to return his triumphant Pokemon so he could rest and nodded to her. “Ready to go?” she asked.

Jathan nodded in agreement but was awfully quiet. He was sort of looking away from her, and it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why.

“Hey,” she said. “Your secret is safe. I'm not gonna tell him. For that, he's gonna have to work up the guts himself.” She crossed her arms and nodded to herself matter-of-factly. She wasn't going to get Jathan in trouble over something like that, and if what he said was indeed true, she sort of wanted to hear it from the source.

He looked a bit more relieved, but also like he wasn't sure if she was joking or not. That was probably the best it was going to get for now, so she started to lead them along the path back to the outpost. The wild Pokemon had begun to clear, going back to their homes inside the trees. She waited until they were outside of the makeshift city before signaling to Haji.

With a whirl of energy, they were all teleported back to the Main Outpost. She handed Jathan the necessary end-of-run paperwork while she took his three captures and started registering them under his Trainer ID. She brought them back as Jathan finished up the papers, and then a wicked smile broke out onto her face at the sight of the man behind him.

With a slight lift to her voice she called out, “Hey, Chainy.” She had the pleasure of watching Jathan still as his brother looked up at her from whatever he was reading. “How about a drink after work? I can tell you all about Jathan's misdeeds.”

That smile didn't leave her face as Jathan went pale and his eyes widened. She wouldn't tell his secrets, but he couldn't know that for sure. It showed on his face. Ivy could feel Haji's amusement through their bond, and Chainy looked a little surprised too.

Life was good. It was her job to keep them on their toes.
