Still rolling his neck to shake off the sleep, Oliver nodded a few times. "Let me just radio back... Hello? Yep, run's going fine. I've got a 6-3-B... no, that's the one with an artifact and an unexplored hostile area...it'd be a faster system if people remembered it, you know. Er, sorry. Yeah, nerves. Okay. ...Nope, don't know what it is... Sure, just have 'em in by tomorrow. Thanks so much." Clapping his radio back onto his belt, he turned and grinned to Opal and her serpent.

"Sorry to keep you waiting! But now that we're past that... worryingly long detour, we can get back to the run! You mentioned wanting to see Minior, right? If we're gonna spot those on a night like tonight, only real option is down on the flats, by the riverbed! You ready? Oh, right, you're good to take a breather, Jareth. Good work as usual on extraction duty," he concluded, scratching his companion behind the ears one last time before recalling him. With another nod to Opal, the Ranger strode back down the hill, pressing through the tall grass under the cloud-muffled light of the stars. The undulating river slid into view below them, though still a good ways off. Oliver, meanwhile, was running through a mental checklist of other landmarks in the valley, trying to remember what else he could add to the run. Wait, you're forgetting conversation, man, you can't count on wild 'Mons to carry the tour for you!

"Er, anyhow! Why're you in the market for Minior and, uh, Ralts, right? Planning to take them into the pro training circuit with you? Or just for companionship? I have heard good things about keeping a psychic-type around the house!" Yeah, that'll work. He turned back to await an answer, even as they drew closer to the riverbank and the breeze began to carry a sound almost like singing. Past Oliver, in the distance beside the dark surface of the water, a handful of pink dots could be seen, apparently the source of the sound.

Jargon was familiar to a league Trainer like Opal, but Oliver’s Ranger talk might as well have been an entirely different language. She tuned out for a moment, one arm around Darius’s slender body while she stared up at the sky. Still no stars, but there was something peaceful about gazing into the open atmosphere. She’d been up among the clouds multiple times. Many dragon Pokemon were some manner of flier - or floater, in Eliza’s case - and she took them flying as a recreation, trust, and just plain exercise exercise whenever she got the chance.

It didn’t take long before Oliver was finished, though, luckily enough. Opal turned back to acknowledge his apology with a murmured, “‘S fine,” but she perked up considerably when Oliver mentioned the riverbed. The clouds seemed impenetrably thick to her; flat terrain didn’t exactly seem helpful.

Not that she was the expert here; she wasn’t going to gainsay the Ranger in a subject about which she knew so little. The night was beautiful, and she was perfectly content to follow behind Oliver. She would never get tired of hiking through nature, and this new forest was extremely exciting, especially considering the mysterious Pokemon that lived here. Quiet for once, she just watched the world go by, eyes roaming eagerly over the terrain. Old, gnarled trees surrounded them; long grass tickled her legs; in the distance, she spied a river twisting through the valley. Was it her imagination, or was there something else out there…?

Oliver’s question drew her attention back quickly, though. “Oh, there’s a couple reasons,” she said. “I mean, I’m mostly a dragon tamer, right? And I love dragons - especially my dragons,” she added with a playful glance at Darius, “but I want to try to expand my training horizons, learn a bit about different Pokemon. Minior are really beautiful and powerful, and I’ve heard the Ralts line is a good, er… beginner psychic Pokemon.” She paused. She considered asking Oliver about his experiences with psychics, since he did have an Espeon, but she stopped as they came out onto the bank. Darius was looking intently at something and when Opal followed his gaze, sure enough, there was something weird. She wasn’t sure whether they were right above the river or on the other bank, but some sort of… orbs were floating in the distance.

“Hey, uh.” She pointed to the anomaly. “You seeing this?”

Through the warm night air, Oliver could already hear the tell-tale sounds, like the sound of a deflating balloon when you pinch its sides. Immediately, his hands went to his pockets, fumbling through his supplies. Come on, did I remember some... Yes! The ranger grinned as he pulled out two sets of wax-mold earplugs. One unwanted nap is more than enough for the night, thank you very much! Turning to offer a pair to his charge, he quickly explained the situation.

"There's a concert of Jigglypuff meets up pretty often in the Valley, and it looks like a couple of them picked this spot for tonight. In and of itself that's pretty great, but because Rangers are always generally nice to 'em, they've gotten way too friendly for their own good. That's where these earplugs come in because they're warming up and if they spot us we're gonna want to-" The squeaking stopped for a moment, replaced with quiet chittering as the puffballs quickly convened before finally edging toward the humans (and snake) intruding. "-Aaaaaand they spotted us. No worries! Act cool and they ought to leave us alone after a few minutes. Talk to you on the other side," he concluded, fixing his own earplugs in place.

Just in time, as well, since the bunch was already closing in. Having already deafened himself, Oliver gave one last thumbs-up to check whether Opal was ready to handle the swarm. Six or seven Jigglypuff and Igglybuff bobbed lightly in the wind, their dam Wigglytuff heading up the rear carrying a determined expression and a rather uncomfortable-looking Igglybuff, the juvenile still warming up diligently despite its apparent shyness. Oliver, for his part, crouched down and smiled warmly, though very pointedly not extending his hands or making any sudden movements.
