    Eric saw his Togekiss' distress almost as quickly as I did. It took a lot to faze strong Pokemon, which meant that the Tauros' threats had definitely been worrying ones. Like people, Pokemon had trouble concentrating when they were seriously worried about something. I was glad to see Eric summon out his Gengar and call back Togekiss. Some Trainers didn't realise that there were more to Pokemon battles than physical health and stamina: there was a mental warfare aspect, just like in duels, or war. Usually the cleverest fighter would win, but sometimes one could just bulldoze through all the mental blocks and stab fear right into their opponent's heart through nothing but strength of will. It turned out that this Tauros was one of them.

    Togekiss landed next to Eric as Specter zipped off into the battlefield. The Flying-type already looked much better, although something about her ruffled feathers told me that she was still working the fear out of her system. Still, the Pokemon was safe now, and it was my job to keep an eye on the battle, so I turned my head to keep the Flying-type out of my sight.

    “Specter, use Nightmare. Make sure not to use it at full power. Don’t want to accidentally knock it out,” Eric cautioned his Pokemon.

    The Ghost-type nodded and clenched its fists. A hazy black aura started drifting off of the Pokemon and into the air. The smoke had evil pointed eyes and a jagged grin, both glowing as red as the coals of a fire. With a slow jump, the haze moved from above Specter over to the Tauros. It covered the Wild Pokemon entirely, and the Tauros immediately started shuddering in its sleep. I was once again impressed with Eric's ingenuity. The Tauros had demonstrated itself to have a formidable mind, so he was going to work undermining that mental strength with nightmares and forcibly inserted doubts. The Normal-type started to roll and groan as it tried desperately to wake up.

    Next, Eric commanded a Dream Eater attack. I had seen this attack used before, but rarely. Specter flew a bit closer and landed gingerly on the ground about ten metres in front of the Tauros. Then, Specter held out his hands and closed his eyes. Small pink bubbles began to seep out of the Normal-type's head, and they slowly levitated through the air towards Spectre. When they reached the Ghost-type, they were absorbed into his body. It was almost creepy, watching this technique: between the terrifying nightmares and the invasive Dream Eater, Tauros would no doubt be very upset right now.

    In a literal blink of an eye, the Tauros opened its own. It looked up and saw the Gengar standing nearby, waiting for the final few bubbles to finish travelling throughout the air. This was the main weakness of Dream Eater: the user was forced to remain completely still until the technique ended. Dual had found that out the hard way on his first ever visit to the National Park. The Tauros managed to get onto its feet, glaring angrily at Specter as it did so. Its many tails lashed at the air angrily, and I was quite sure that Specter wanted nothing more than to get away into the safety of the air. The Tauros let out a bellow and started running towards Specter. The jewel on its forehead started glowing bright pink as it did so. The final Dream Eater bubble osmosed into Specter's skin, and the Ghost-type made a quick jump into the air. Unfortunately, it wasn't fast enough. The Tauros plowed straight into the Gengar's stomach, and I winced. To the Ghost-type, that must have felt like being hit by a freight train. Specter was knocked flying through the air before landing in a patch of flowers. Delicate stems and petals were sent flying throughout the air and all I could see was Specter's two legs sticking straight up into the air. My Aura Reader told me that the Pokemon was okay, but he had definitely taken a very serious blow.

    With a nod, Specter prepared himself. Opportunities for him to use Nightmare were few and far between due to the technique having an effect only on sleeping pokemon. As such, he was fairly out of practice and mildly concerned that his execution and control over the resulting mist would be insufficient. Clenching his fists as his eyes took on a darker shade, that of dried blood, he opened his mouth and called forth a black mist, one that seemed to absorb the sunlight with its smoky tendrils.

    Reeking of decaying matter, the temperature of the air surrounding the haze dropped. Cold and clammy, the dark cloud formed features that somewhat resembled a face. Swirls of piercing, bright red coalesced to create what could only be described as a pair of eyes so sinister that it made one’s skin crawl. Underneath the eyes, consisting of the same crimson essence, the haze formed a jagged row of teeth – sharp, pointed, and most importantly, fearsome. The menacing canines were arranged in such a way that they formed a sinister grin, one that promised to bestow the most heinous of terrors to its victim. With a shudder, the evil-looking entity lurched forward, creeping through the air slowly. The cloud’s movements were deliberate. Leisurely and unhurriedly, the swirling mist surrounded the sleeping Tauros, engulfing the pokemon in its noxious vapors.

    The Tauros immediately shuddered, and Eric, composed and collected, watched as the effects of the Nightmare unfolded. The slumbering beast gave out a low moan, one of its hooves occasionally twitching ever so slightly. Under the effects of Yawn and Nightmare, the Tauros was open and vulnerable to attacks, but the thought that the Tauros, at any moment, could break free from the sleep that subdued it kept Eric on his toes, ready to give out orders should the Normal type awaken.

    As soon as the black cloud surrounded its target, Specter, levitating, approached the Tauros, cautiously landing not too far from its target. Closing his eyes as he concentrated, Specter prepared to extract bits and pieces from the Tauros’ mind. Invading the Tauros’ mind just as Togekiss had, Specter entered the fortress that was the wild pokemon’s thoughts only to find darkness. The air was dry, searing, and Specter quickly noted there was not much to observe. Suddenly parched, the Ghost type cringed as blistering waves of heat rolled about. To his dismay, as he looked around, the plane was barren and empty. There was nothing for him to siphon. He flew hither and thither, eventually coming upon a single plant. Immediately, he knew that that was what he had been searching for.

    The tree, a silver behemoth that reached to the (nonexistent) sky, grew from the ground and possessed a multitude of foliage. Its leaves emitted a faint, pulsing silvery glow, and on its branches grew multicolored berries. The fruit, plentiful and of various sizes, hung from the tree’s boughs. Levitating, Specter approached the branches in order to get a better look. Upon closer inspection, the fruits appeared to be still images, snapshots of the Tauros’ life frozen in time. One portrayed the Tauros’ birth, while another seemed to show an image of the National Park from the Tauros’ point of view. Reaching out with his hand, the Gengar plucked one, and the result was immediate. As if Specter’s touch was poison, the leaves that he brushed against lost their glow, turning to black just before they fell. The nearby fruit reacted similarly, dimming, rotting and falling to the ground in an instant. And it was done. The contamination spread like a virus, initially spreading from the branches to the trunk and spreading outwards soon after. With the tree’s death imminent, Specter made his retreat.

    The Tauros’ dream started trickling out, their manifestation being the miniscule pink bubbles that came from its head. Slowly, they drifted towards Specter, guided by an unnatural wind. As they reached his body, the spheres merged with his form, disappearing as they were absorbed.

    Hands outstretched, Specter waited for the completion of the technique. Unfortunately, it was at this moment that the Tauros regained consciousness. Eyes wide open, the Tauros raised its head and spotted its opponent. Nostrils flared, it started lashing out with its tails, and if it was at all possible, Eric would have sworn that the fire in its eyes burned brighter than the sun.

    Eric was about to call out, but it would have been of no use. The bubbles from Dream Eater still hung in the air, and until they disappeared, Specter would be rooted in place, unable to evade the Tauros’ attacks. Specter would’ve shot into the sky if he could. Instead, he desperately willed the spheres to move faster, hoping that they disappeared before the Tauros attacked. Togekiss, on the other hand, was not so calm. She had started chirping loudly, most likely calling out, warning Specter that the Tauros was now awake.

    The bumps, which seemed to be made of the same substance as the Tauros’ horns, became bright pink, and the beast raced forward. Specter, bound by the force which allowed him to sap his opponent’s strength, jumped into the air the moment the last bubble melted into his skin. The bubble, however, had not come quickly enough, and the Tauros rammed itself, head first, into his belly.

    Had Gengar not been a ghost, and had he possessed internal organs, he would’ve probably been in a critical condition from massive hemorrhages and the rupture of various organs. Luckily though, he wasn’t. Thrown into the air and crashing into some flowers, the Ghost type was now seething with anger. That was the second time a Normal type had made contact with him today, and neither had been the least bit pleasant. Legs sticking into the air, he took a moment to compose himself. The Tauros was breathing heavily and did not seem to be preparing an attack, but he quickly righted himself, not wanting to provide his opponent any more opportunities. As he grit his teeth, he locked eyes with the Tauros which, unsurprisingly, was glaring daggers at him.

    Seeing Specter slowly rise to his feet, Eric gave him a quick once over. He wanted to approach his pokemon and inspect any bruises up close, but with the rampaging Tauros around, that might have been dangerous. “Everything all right, Specter?” he called out. The Ghost type simply nodded its head, not even bothering to make eye contact. Right now, the Gengar just wanted to continue the battle.

    Eric crossed his arms, frowning. Specter had taken some hard hits from the last battle, and Eric wasn’t sure how much more his pokemon could take. He’d have to be more cautious. Assessing the situation once more, he planned his moves. The Tauros looked worse now than its state at the beginning of the battle. That much was clear, and although Dream Eater and Nightmare had been performed successfully, the Tauros still seemed able to put up a fight. The powerful blow it had just delivered was evidence of that, and at this point, Eric figured that any attempts he made at capture would most likely fail. That meant he would just have to wear it out even more. It was time for his next trick then.

    “Specter, first, I want you to use Telekinesis and lift your opponent into the air. Just a few centimeters off the ground would be all right; we just need it to be somewhat immobilized” It was clear that the bull was very adept at ramming, and that most of its strength was in the form of brute force. Once it was under the effects of Telekinesis, the Tauros’ attacking options would hopefully be quite limited as it would be held in place by psychic restraints. Also, Telekinesis had the added benefit of making the Tauros much easier to hit, holding it in place and making it very vulnerable to attacks. It also made attempting capture much easier. The problem with Telekinesis, however, was that it was very taxing. It required a great amount of concentration and was difficult to sustain for a long period. Psychic types were the most capable of performing the technique due to their inherent affinity, but a handful of other types of pokemon usually had moderate success.

    “After that, we’re going on the offensive,” Eric continued. Deciding to capitalize on his pokemon’s anger, he called out, “Use Dark Pulse.” Dark Pulse involved immersing the target in pure, unbridled, vindictive thoughts, thoughts that Eric knew Specter, after taking such a blow from the Tauros, would have a surplus of. As one song so eloquently put, the attack would need, “Loathing. Unadulterated loathing.” With any luck, the attack might even make the Tauros flinch. Dark Pulse, Eric felt, would be particularly apt as it would do both physical and mental damage. He intended to try his hand at capturing the Tauros soon, but if things didn’t go as planned, he had a contingency plan that would require the Tauros to be in a somewhat compromised mental state. “After that, call another Thunderbolt down.” The skies were progressively getting darker. It would certainly be easier to summon a Thunderbolt due to the high cloud density, or at least, Eric hoped that to be the case.

    Nodding, the Gengar hovered in place, using the limited Psychic abilities he possessed in an attempt to suspend his opponent midair. Arms outstretched, the Gengar closed its eyes and started concentrating. Most of the time, Telekinetic abilities were not inherent to Gengar, only becoming available through training and studying the technique. Such was the case with Specter; Thus, he usually had limited success with the attack.

    Meanwhile, Eric rummaged around in his bag, keeping an eye on the battle with his peripheral vision. He pushed aside the camera and various Park Balls, instead fishing out the Super Ball. If both Dark Pulse and Thunderbolt hit, he would throw the capture device.

    Eric was quick to check on his Pokemon, to see if the Gengar was okay. As it turned out, Specter was; he rose implacably out of the rose bush, which was rotting slowly from being in contact with his poison. It made for quite the intimidating sight. Specter's eyes told me that he was used to doling out the punishment instead of taking it, and that he was sick and tired of being pushed around by Pokemon that didn't normally do so. That was one of the things that made me so proud to be a Ranger, and a big reason that Trainers from all over the globe came to the National Park-our Pokemon were incredibly strong, almost literally a breed apart.

    "Specter, first, I want you to use Telekinesis and lift your opponent into the air. Just a few centimeters off the ground would be all right; we just need it to be somewhat immobilized. After that, we’re going on the offensive. Use Dark Pulse-loathing, unadulterated loathing. After that, call another Thunderbolt down," Eric said to his Ghost-type.

    The Pokemon seemed only too happy to oblige. He landed on the ground and held out his hands towards the Tauros, closing his eyes to concentrate as he did so. I noticed offhandedly that the stance was almost exactly the same as when he used Dream Eater. A light purple aura covered the Gengar as his telekinetic powers awoke, and that same colour surrounded the Tauros was well. The Wild Pokemon immediately started struggling against the impermeable force that held it, but there was no hope.

    Once Specter saw the bull thrashing against its sueprnatural bonds, he started preparing his next attack. The Ghost-type held his hands together and dark energy started to eddy and swirl in the form of a vortex. It didn't take long to form-no doubt Gengar had plenty of nasty thoughts to feed to the Dark Pulse. When the attack was nearly burst from between his stubby fingers, Specter pushed his hands forward. The tornado leaped forwards and moved across the battlefield in a flash. the Tauros was assaulted on all sides by the malevolent energy as the attack wound itself around the Normal-type's entire body, lashing out everywhere possible.

    Specter did not rest on his laurels to watch the attack, though. He immediately threw his hands up into the air. The dark clouds that had gathered above us grew a titch darker, and I heard the crackle of lightning far, far above us. There was a sudden flash of whiteness, and I looked up to see a jagged lance of pure electricity racing down from the sky. At the exact same time, I heard a loud bellow from the Tauros and I was shocked to see that the Thunderbolt ripped itself in two. One half blasted into the Tauros, sending sparks crawling all over its body. The bull Pokemon lowed in pain and feebly thrashed against the Telekinesis but could not free itself. The other half of the Thunderbolt smashed into Specter, sending him rolling head over feet. This broke his concentration and the Tauros landed on the ground with a heavy thud. With one last defiant scream, it started charging towards its opponent.

    Thinking quickly, Eric tossed a Super Ball straight at the Wild Pokemon. since the bull had started charging, it couldn't change direction, and it appeared to leap into the capture device. I exhaled a breath that I hadn't realised I had as the ball shook. Once, then twice, then thrice.

    Suddenly, it burst out of the ball in a flash of red light! What was even more surprising was that it left the ball at full speed, as if the capture attempt had never even happened. Specter was just getting to his feet, and when he turned to look the bull was only a few feet away. One of the Tauros' hooves pounded his head down onto the ground, and then a side-swipe with a horn sent the unfortunate Ghost-type rolling over the grass before coming to rest right in front of Eric.

    Both Pokemon were now very tired. I could see that the Tauros was struggling to stay on its feet, although there was apparently enough energy left for it to stamp at the ground. Specter was in better shape comparatively, although not very good overall: he'd taken a real beating, and although energy and willingness was evident in his eyes, I could see that his form was starting to go incorporeal, which was usually a sign of fatigue in Ghost-types.

    Specter quickly followed Eric’s commands, shutting his eyes closed as he started to concentrate. Stubby palms outstretched, the Gengar quickly cleared its mind of all distractions. Once he was ready, Specter’s entire form started glowing a light purple, the color of a freshly plucked plum, and with that, he extended his telekinesis towards the Tauros. Initially, the purple hue only covered the bovine’s hooves, but in a blink of an eye, the glow quickly spread, racing up the bull’s limbs and enveloping its torso. The shaggy mane was the next to be surrounded, and finally, the telekinesis secured its hold on the wild pokemon’s head and lifted it off the ground.

    The Tauros was infuriated. Struggling against the psychic bonds that held it, it tried tossing and turning its head to no avail. All it could manage were a few fidgety movements that resembled muscle spasms. Firmly held in Specter’s grasp, the Tauros narrowed its eyes in fury, huffing loudly. Eric assumed that it was promising pain once more, just as it had done before falling asleep. This time though, he wasn’t extremely concerned as he was just about ready to attempt capturing the wild pokemon. Feeling the smooth cold metal of the Super Ball firmly in his hand, he patiently waited, intent on throwing the device once the Tauros was further weakened.

    On to the next attack, thought Specter. Wearing a large grin on his face, Specter put his hands together, preparing for the Dark Pulse that he was about to unleash. Similar to the Tauros, Specter’s eyes were narrowed. However, unlike the Tauros’ eyes, which were filled with unbridled rage, Specter’s eyes conveyed with malice and mischief. Turbulent dark energy poured out of Specter’s palms as if he had opened a faucet that was just bursting to release its contents. Thick, black, inky wisps, the physical manifestation of Specter’s negative emotions, streamed out from the tips of his fingers, floating in the space that was outlined by his hands. The chaotic force ebbed back and forth between the Ghost type’s two palms, eventually swirling into a spiral. The vortex quickly grew, fueled by every vindictive thought Specter could muster at the moment. This proved to be an easy task, as every scathing remark he had previously cleared out of his head came rushing in with the force of a waterfall. As a result, the vortex, with its force and chaos, was explosive and difficult to control at best. Just as the attack was about to reach its critical point, Specter pushed his hands forward, releasing the attack. The black tornado zipped across the battlefield and had no trouble finding its immobilized target. The Tauros found itself helpless at it was surrounded by the vortex. Whiplike appendages then lashed out from all sides, not sparing any body part of the wild pokemon.

    Not sparing a moment, the Shadow Pokemon threw his hands up into the air right after pushing the Dark Pulse away. Electricity crackled in the distance as Specter called upon a force that would allow him to draw out thunder from the sky. A bright light suddenly filled the air, temporarily blinding both Eric and his pokemon. A bolt of lightning abruptly burst forth, streaking through the air. Suddenly, the Tauros cried out, and to Eric’s surprise, the bolt of lightning split into two, one heading for the Tauros and the other arcing towards the Gengar. Both bolts struck true, hitting both pokemon squarely and sending them crashing into the ground. A few sparks of residual electricity crackled over the Tauros’ fur as it attempted movement once more. Due to the sudden attack, Specter had been caught off guard and had released his mental grip.
    The Tauros was quick to recover. Eric noticed patches of singed fur here and there, but apart from that, the Tauros seemed to be fine. Surprisingly enough, it immediately got to its feet. Screaming defiantly, the Tauros went for one last attack, charging in Specter’s direction.

    Eric, surprised by this resilience, flung the Super Ball at the pokemon. The metal had been cool to the touch, but at this moment, his fingers were just as cold if not colder. Still charging, the Tauros disappeared into the metal sphere with nothing more than a brief flash of white light. The device dropped to the ground. The central button blinked on and off as the ball shook. All in all, the device wobbled three times before snapping open once more, this time, however, to release the Tauros. To everyone’s surprise, the Tauros was still running towards Specter as if he had not been temporarily absorbed into the tiny device. This time, the Tauros crashed into Specter’s side horn-first, causing the Ghost to roll over the grass and end up in front of Eric.

    Eric clenched his teeth in both surprise and irritation. This Tauros was surprisingly tough, perhaps even belonging to the top caliber. He hadn’t been expecting this trip to be a walk in the park, but he had no idea that park pokemon were this tough. Immediately, he assessed the situation in order to evaluate his options. Both pokemon still seemed capable of battle, but the Tauros seemed a little bit wobbly. It was stomping, proudly displaying its strength and resilience. The multiple wounds and bruises on its skin, however, told a different story. The Tauros had indeed taken a lot of damage. Specter, on the other hand, was also considerably beat up. While he had no wounds to tell of his injuries, Eric could see that his form was starting to flicker in and out, a sign that he would not be able to last long should the two pokemon keep exchanging blows. Eric concluded that he had to conclude the battle swiftly and soon. “One more attack should do it,” he said mostly to himself. Quickly inspecting Specter’s condition once again, Eric then ordered the use of Sucker Punch which would be followed up with a Hypnosis technique. Eric was relying on the fact that the Tauros had been aggressive so far, and if anything, he was going to use that aggravated state to his advantage by striking first with a Sucker Punch. Then, a well-timed Hypnosis would hopefully put the Tauros to sleep once more, which would allow Eric a greater chance for a successful capture. He still had three Park Balls in his possession. While they weren’t as effective as a Super Ball, they would (hopefully) be enough. He planned on throwing one whether or not the Hypnosis attack was performed successfully.

    Of course, there was also the matter of the Super Ball to attend to. It had cost quite a bit more than the regular Park Balls, and Eric only had the one. Later, when there wasn’t an imminent threat of grave injury resulting from being pierced by the Tauros’ horn, he would try to grab the Super Ball and check if it was still usable.

    OOC: @Sky Lark; Sorry for the delay ;-;

    ~~~~~
    Eric took some time to gauge Specter's condition. Unfortunately for him, both of his choices were sub-par: Togekiss had been seriously scared but the Tauros' raw power, and Specter was starting to flag. He decided to finish up with Specter, which I judged as the correct call to make. As horrible as it may possibly sound, running a willing Pokemon into the ground was always preferable to forcing an unwilling Pokemon to fight. Eric commanded a Sucker Punch and Hypnosis combo, one I had seen before. The Sucker Punch helped the Hypnosis-user to close the gap so that the enemy would have a much harder time avoiding the purple waves of energy that incited extreme drowsiness.
    Sure enough, the bull started to charge and Specter faded away into nothingness. The Tauros stopped, confused, and in that moment Specter barrelled out of the ground right in front of the Normal-type. His fist was cloaked in black energy and he smashed it into the Wild Pokemon's chin in a picture-perfect copy of an uppercut. The Tauros moaned and took a few faltering steps backwards, but Specter wasn't done. He hovered up to eye-level and stared right at his opponent. Purple waves of energy danced tantalisingly out of his irises and through the air. The Tauros tried to look away, but it was too late. The purple lines surrounded the bull and slowly, grudgingly, the Wild Pokemon fell to the earth for the second time.
    Eric quickly threw another capture device: this time a Park Ball instead of a Super Ball. Amusingly, where the Super Ball had failed the Park Ball succeeded. Very rarely had I been as happy to hear the success chime as I was right now. I walked over to pick up the sphere, and I snatched the empty Super Ball out of the mud on the way back. As I approached Eric, the sound of thunder boomed from the sky above, and a couple drops of rain started to strike my coat.
    "Definitely a battle-and-a-half there," I said to the Trainer as I tossed him the Super Ball. "What do you feel like now? Had enough of the flower gardens yet? This storm doesn't look too bad, so if you'd like we could stick around. Some of the rarer Pokemon might come out for the water."
    Seeing the Tauros successfully captured in the Park Ball, Specter drifted lazily to the ground. Shoulders slumped forward, the Gengar did not attempt to hide the fact that it was exhausted. The Tauros had been a tough opponent.
    Chainy, meanwhile, had picked up the Park Ball, pocketing it just as he had done for previous captures. He then walked to a patch of mud, the area where the Super Ball had landed, and picked the ball up. It was dirty and caked with mud but presumably still usable.
    As he walked towards Eric, a clap of thunder sounded, finally bringing the rain that had been at the edge of everyone’s minds for the duration of the run. "Definitely a battle-and-a-half there," he said, tossing Eric the Super Ball.
    Eric nodded in appreciation. The Tauros had unexpectedly held its ground against his Gengar. Clearly, there was something special about the pokemon found in the park.
    "What do you feel like now?” Chainy asked. “Had enough of the flower gardens yet? This storm doesn't look too bad, so if you'd like we could stick around. Some of the rarer Pokemon might come out for the water."
    Eric considered the idea for a moment, but he quickly dismissed sticking around. He didn’t fancy the idea of battling in the rain, and he was very satisfied with the pokemon he’d manage to catch. With a grin, he replied, “I think I’ll pass. Thanks for taking me on this run though. It was great.”
    Pressing the buttons on two pokeballs simultaneously, Eric recalled both the Gengar and the Togekiss as he prepared to turn back.
    "I think I’ll pass. Thanks for taking me on this run though. It was great," Eric replied.
    "Sure, any time." I was kind of disappointed, because Eric was a fantastic trainer and I'd been looking forwards to seeing him battle more. However, I couldn't deny that managed some amazing captures, and on the bright side it meant that we wouldn't have to traipse around in the rain. I watched as Eric recalled his Pokemon, and I summoned my Gallade out from his ball. It was rare for him to be there, but he'd been exhausted by a week-long training session and had decided to take a rest.
    "Hey there Dual, we need a lift back to the gate. Think you got it in you?" I asked the Psychic-type.
    He responded with a raised eyebrow. Blue light started to gather around us, slowly creating a blue sphere that separated our little group from the world. When it was complete, the orb shattered, and everything that made us who we are was flung across space and time.
